WikiCup 2012 October newsletter

The 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

• The featured article award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for four featured articles in the final round.
• The good article award also goes to Grapple X (submissions), for 19 good articles in the second round.
• The list award goes to Muboshgu (submissions), for three featured lists in the final round.
• The topic award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for three good topics (with around 40 articles) in round 4.
• The did you know award goes to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), for well over 100 DYKs in the final round.
• The news award goes to ThaddeusB (submissions), for 10 in the news items in round 3.
• The picture award goes to Grandiose (submissions), for two featured pictures in round 2.
• The reviewer award goes to both Ruby2010 (submissions) (14 reviews in round 1) and Grandiose (submissions) (14 reviews in round 3).
• Finally, for achieving an incredible bonus point total in the final round, and for bringing the top-importance article frog to featured status, a biostar has been awarded to Cwmhiraeth (submissions).

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. How dare you spot my incredibly sloppy mistakes in Gilligan! No-one was supposed to notice them! On a serious note, thanks for the review and I think I've got everything. On another matter, is it my imagination, or is WP:CRIC slowly dying a death? People seem to have either left completely or moved on to other stuff, and I think you could count active cricket writers on the fingers of one hand. A lot of the effort now seems to come via IPL stuff, and a few editors writing about Indian cricket, but they don't seem to have much to do with the main project, which is a shame as some of them are rather good. I think probably the process, and the letter of the law, have been applied correctly and that any appeal would be bound to fail, however irritating that may be. I think it might also put WP:CRIC's friendly admins – of which I see that you are now one: congrats – in a difficult position. So I wouldn't advocate that. Palairet

Rooting through my (scarily large collection of) books on 1902, I found a few fragments. (To be honest, he strikes me as one of the odder selections that series. My impression is that he was very much a hard wicket specialist, yet that was one of the wetter summers ever. Why pick a stylist for a brute of a pitch? There were plenty of gritty openers that may have prospered; surely even those selectors must have seen he needed a dry wicket to do well?)

• I've got a rather strange book about Trumper in 1902 which mentions LCHP. It has a bit about his stylishness (which I imagine you have plenty about) and about his innings of 90-odd against the 1902 team for Somerset. There's also an odd little bit which mentions that dropped Tate catch. In this version, Braund asked MacLaren to move Palairet to square leg, but MacLaren refused to send him and sent Tate instead.
• There's also "Test Eleven", a frankly rubbish book about the "Greatest Ashes Battles" which includes Manchester 1902. It has a little on his selection ("The selectors' apparent preference for an amateur like Palairet over the professionalism of Surrey's Tom Hayward, roughly his equal in age but far more experienced and in better form, would have gone unquestioned by most at this time") and on that catch again. It summarises a couple of versions: Altham said that Braund requested LCHP at short leg. MacLaren brought him in specially from the deep and dropped Tate out in his place. Brodribb's version is that Palairet usually fielded deep for Braund, but was stopped from crossing over (Darling was left-handed and had come on strike for the last ball of the over) when Darling was on strike by MacLaren, who used Tate instead. It also gives one book which imagines a hypothetical conversation in which Mac says to Braund that an Old Harrovian does not ask an old Reptonian to cross the field for one ball at a professional's request.
• There's quite a bit in "Life worth Living" by CB Fry, which mentions there time together at school. That looks the best bet for extra details, and I can send you a scan of that if it helps. For the others, there are only fragments so I can give you the details and page numbers if you want them. I don't know what you have on "the catch", or how much you want to include.

PS: I'm not sure how you are progressing with that overseas cricketers article, but I found something good in the Guardian archive (library access subscription thingy) which summarises the overseas players to have played in the Championship by 1931. On the catch, it might be worth adding a little, if for no other reason than the possibility that Palairet's Repton "lineage" may have lost England a famous match because Mac did not want to ask him to cross the pitch! It's pretty shaky to be honest. And I'm not entirely sure that it is in MacLaren's character either. But there seems to be unanimity that Braund asked for LCHP and was refused for whatever reason. And then came poor old Fred. And on Braund, I seem to remember that he played a big part in those matches in 1901 and 1902 which we must never talk about. Ever. And so did Palairet. First, see the reply I have made to User:Jhall1 who is at least worth replying to.

Your comments are beneath contempt. I can think of nothing pettier than someone who insists on his right to sole management of a talk page despite the fact that it contains offensive material that, as verified by User:Black Kite, constitutes a serious breach of site directives (WP:BAN, WP:PA and others). Where is the good faith from Johnlp towards Jim Hardie and myself, not to mention all the other people like AA, TRM, Andrew Nixon, Nev1, Dweller, etc. who have been harrassed by the banned editor? Okay, like Jhall1, you don't know about the e-mails which Johnlp has not mentioned.

As for respectability, how can anyone respect a wannabe admin who, on the one hand, insists on "proper channels", and then, when it suits you, encourages Johnlp to defy the site's guidelines because of his "right" to maintain malicious, vindictive content on his precious talk page? What "right" is that? A moral one, perhaps?

Now perhaps you'd like to ask Johnlp about those e-mails and do some serious study of the site's directives (as against mere policies and guidelines) so that you can be of some use to editors who actually need help rather than those who are standing by their "rights". ----Jack | ^{talk page} 14:05, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Opinion required

As I'm rather stuck inside for New Year, I was pottering with Andy Ganteaume's article which I found while following your example and looking at cricket articles needing some TLC. I've added quite a bit, but was wondering if you thought it was worth a shot at GA? The only thing stopping me is that he wrote an autobiography a few years ago which I can't help thinking should be used for this article to be a GA, and there is no way I am forking out for that one!
