So far as I'm concerned, I'd really like to see this editor convince the community that they can edit collaboratively with others on the important topics that they've been working on. That will entail of course not only being civil to other editors but following our policies and guidelines in their editing, but if they (or I should be saying you, LumaNatic) can do it they could be a real asset. After the block I'd suggest finding some other areas to edit in and working in those areas with others. That's the way to lay a foundation for an appeal. - Doug Weller, As a Wikipedian in Residence and a Wikipedia Fellow, LumaNatic has been given plenty of advice and mentoring about editing Wikipedia. His failure to follow Wikipedia policies and guidelines is entirely due to his desire not to, and has nothing to do with any gap in his understanding of the PNG. - This block should have never happened - I didn't violate the topic ban - I was actually asked to edit the AfroCROWD event, because as their former intern I'm co-hosting the event, which is about a former town in Houston, Texas, as part of my thesis. I was out off the country presenting said thesis and had slow internet so it was moot, but I'm requesting a retroactive unblock, and repeal of the ban in the first place because it was punitive and unwarranted - I in no way disrupted Wikipedia, and as many editors said in the discussion, it was punitive, vindictive and totally unnecessary. --LumaNatic (talk) 20:32, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

- LumaNatic the issue is that you are topic banned from race and racial history all very broadly construed (in addition to other things). An institute for African American Studes is going to have overlap in those two areas without even very broadly construing the topics. I think you have expertise and passion, not to mention paid time, to positively contribute to Wikipedia. I would like to be able to support some scaling back of your ban in the future. But you need to first show you understand the concerns expressed and can hear feedback and otherwise understand community norms. You had smaller edits on March 6 and 16 which were in a more positive direction. I would hope that there could be other such work fromyou when your ban is up. - The bigger problem here is that you are a WIR at Columbia University, which means that your activities for that should be "to facilitate Wikipedia entries related to that institution's mission, encourage and assist it to release material under open licences, and to develop the relationship between the institution and the Wikimedia community." As far as I can see, apart from advertising meetups on your user page, you're not doing that; there are 164 articles in Category:Columbia_University, many of them in frankly terrible condition, which need to be improved. This is what you, and your editathons, should be doing. Instead, you only appear to have been editing in your own sphere of interest, which you're currently banned from doing. In fact, I can't see a mainspace edit by you on a Columbia University page until going back to 22 December (Columbia Center for Oral History Research, and even that is related to you). - @Black Kite: I can see that it ain't easy. Among the difficulties of a WIR is the need to steer between the neutrality of an editor and the loyalty of an institutional agent. Scylla and Charybdis. Your suggestion, based on the definition, pushes a WIR in the direction of being a publicity agent for the institution, so it calls for delicate steering. I mostly know WIRs who serve the GLAM sector, for example a university library. This kind of sailor follows an easier path, since the collections of such institutions are usually not very much about the institution itself.  Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City. New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events. | |

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October![edit]
Greetings!
After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.
The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.
On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

You seem like you may be wanting to create a project or user page, as opposed to an article. Such as, User:LumaNatic/Disrupt Wikipedia.   The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday November 16, 2019 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.

A Wikimedian in Residence, but you haven't yet learned how to format section headings for an article, or to avoid linking to disambiguation pages like NSF? Please take the time to pick up the basics of editing. For the links-to-dab pages problem there's a splendid gadget available: go to Preferences, Gadgets, and it's near the end of the list under "Appearance" - but in any case it's good practice to check every link you make in case it leads to the wrong page, so you should have spotted the problem. - This should come as no surprise, but be aware that your comment (as all are) is noted, documented and will be used in an university report on the experiences of Wikimedians, particularly why retention numbers are so low outside of its current status quo demographics. As a Wikimedian in Residence the expectation for competence is higher. The expectations for competence from Pam as someone with numerous permissions is higher, and for me as a sysop, even higher. It feels different to fix someone's problems who shouldn't be expected to know better (as I regularly do when I patrol New Pages) than from someone who is literally paid to edit Wikipedia versus most of us who do this for free as a hobby. Of course none of us can know everything and, personally, I am more than willing to help good faith editors such as yourself. - I see I was a bit cryptic in my helpful advice above about the links-to-dab pages gadget in that I didn't say what it does: it highlights such links in orange, so you can spot them immediately. Very useful, and recommended. But I also stand by my advice to check all outgoing links in every edit unless you've used them before and know them to be right (time and again the "Primary topic" for a name or other title is not the topic which I expect to find there, or is a disambiguation page: better to get it right than leave the reader having to search for it). I'm sorry you found my comments to be "hostile". Like Barkeep, I spend lots of time clearing up muddles made by new and inexperienced editors, but I do not expect to tidy up after a Wikipedian in Residence. PamD 17:40, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

- LumaNatic, I made a few edits to Herbert S. Terrace. You might want to have a look at WP:OVERCITE, as you have seven sources on the lede in one spot. The lede does not actually need any sources, unless it is all that there is to the article. The lede should summarize the contents. Overciting is less than desirable; what would be desirable there is to have those sources inline in the article at the places where I have put a "CN" tag. The other thing I noticed was the use of bold in the articles published section (bold now removed). Bold is typically only used in the first instance of the article name, and automatically in some section headings. Have a look at the extensive WP:MOS for questions of formatting. In the case of the articles published area of Herbert S. Terrace, I will usually examine an article by a scholar in a similar area to see how it is handled there. - @ThatMontrealIP: About the overciting, it might just be that the editor is using a technique I sometimes use: gather several sources, add them all, properly formatted, as refs for the lead section to demonstrate undoubted notability, before saving first version of article - to avoid drive-by CSDs, or the bother of doing the thing in draft or sandbox. The refs can then be re-used or moved as the article developes. I tend then to create infrastructure like incoming redirects, llinks from other Wikipedias, etc, before returning to continue with the article. If I'm not going to be able to get the article more filled out immediately I'll add an {{under construction}} template too. This article sems to be notably lacking any main body of content: the lead summarises his academic work but it's not described elsewhere except through the list of publications, so there's clearly more to be done. I know that your work on Vincent Brown (historian) is similar to a lot of other work you've done where it's just doing wikignome sort of work - adding a short description, a wikilink, and an infobox. Arguably given the topic this could be interpreted as a topic ban violation. It feels a bit counterproductive to me to block for that kind of violation. Adding wikilinks, as Luma has done in the two places I've noted a technical tban violation, doesn't strike me as really repeating the problems that lead to the ban. And I've noticed productive content creation in ways that don't violate the TBAN. So yes I think seeing if the community would support modifying the TBAN is appropriate. If the community is not well that tells me something. I can either do nothing (the joy of being a volunteer sysop) and let someone else (if anyone) note the violations or I can know what the community expects and follow through. Hi there, I noticed that your profile is listed in Category:Wikipedians by alma mater: Harvard University. By any chance do you have borrowing privileges at Harvard's libraries? I've been trying to get access to this obscure pamphlet by John Richard Clark Hall, and Widener Library appears to have the only copy in the US. I've also been unable to ILL it (even just a scan), and I won't be able to take a look in person for the foreseeable future. If you have borrowing privileges and would be willing to put in a "Scan & Deliver" request (ideally for a cover-to-cover scan, which should be easy enough since it is only 28 pages, and out of copyright), I would much appreciate it. No experience of anything at all is required. All are welcome! This special WikiWednesday will feature a welcome session and beginning of a listening tour by the newly appointed executive director of Wikimedia NYC, the first staff member leading our local non-profit.
