Hilite template 2.0 (for learning purposes)

Hi mono, so I went through your template school to help me understand what's going on. I read the sections for the parser functions that Gary King used. I wanted to make it so the text color can be changed (not for the {{hilite}} template, just to see if I can actually do it).

  1. My main namespace User:Keraunoscopia holds the template (modified), and I put the template tests there as well
  2. the core is at User:Keraunoscopia/core; I modified this so the text color is black (I tested it with red, and it worked fine)

I got the text to change color, which was a small victory. But I can't get the text to revert to normal (no highlighting, black text) after the date expires. To get any sign of life, I had to switch {{{3}}} and {{{4}}} around, so now parameter 4 is the date and parameter 3 is the text color. Any ideas where I need to tweak any of the code? Thanks so much! – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 07:37, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take a look. mono 17:33, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, actually; I'm making slow progress with some very beginner contributions and this was probably too large of a step at the mo'. I will figure it out, but not right now :D – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 01:17, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if i'm being picky...

...but would you please remove the floating WikiProject advertisement thingy? I find it really annoying. ~NerdyScienceDude () 16:15, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Add .qxz-ads {display: none;} to your skin.css. Thanks, mono 17:30, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That blocks all of them. Could you upload a separate version of File:WikiProject Mac Logo.png? Sometimes, the extra text is undesirable--for instance on a template or the WP banner templates, where a plain logo is easiest to see. fetch·comms 19:23, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Old School League of Copyeditors Barnstar
For your copyediting efforts during the May 2010 Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive, editing 11 articles with a combined total of 28,596 words, I hereby award you this Old School League of Copyeditors Barnstar. A bit more advice...

If you are replying to a response on the Help desk such as Updating an article on a person of historical importance, it is sometimes useful to look into it a bit more deeply than just give a 'standard' answer.

There is an article about Eugene Curnow (and that appears to be the only one about a person with that name), and a quick search of Google News/Archive didn't find anything, but a search of Google Web Search did! This one is a copy of this one, which is the reference I added to the article.

Even if that had not been available, look at my reply: if the questioner had been referring to the Curnow we have an article about, then they could respond in more detail - if it was about another Curnow, then I would have added your advice (had you not already done so).

The point I'm trying to make is that on the Help desk (and the New contributors' help page), before replying it is necessary to look into the issue a bit - if you can't find the information, or the article doesn't exist, etc, then perhaps use a template or a 'standard' reply might be suitable, but often more is required!

Regards, -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 08:46, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Incidently, your advice should have included the fact that the date can be added to the article if there is some reliable source for the information. A BLP subject probably wouldn't be too happy to find that they have been declared to be dead on Wikipedia when they are alive and kicking! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 08:48, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

BigTop

Hey Mono, I saw you moved BigTop to Big Top (application), giving the reason "correct name". As I understand WP:AT and WP:DAB, this was unnecessary. The application is not named Big Top (application). It is named BigTop (according to the article). Therefore, if there is no other article with the name BigTop, no disambiguator is needed. If you don't mind, could you move it back? Thanks, Airplaneman 02:20, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Grab some glory, and a barnstar

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 14:48, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The above three notices were posted to User talk:iBen. ~NerdyScienceDude () 15:41, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it'd be less of a hassle to have User:iBen and User talk:iBen as plain old redirects. Then people can infer that you have changed your name. I doubt people have bookmarked your pages... Airplaneman 16:06, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for signing up for the July Backlog Elimination Drive! The copyedit backlog stretches back two and a half years, all the way back to the beginning of 2008! We're really going to need all the help we can to get it down to a manageable number. We've ambitiously set a goal of clearing all of 2008 from the backlog this month. In order to do that, we're going to need more participants. Is there anyone that you can invite or ask to participate with you? If so, we're offering an award to the person who brings in the most referrals. Just notify ɳorɑfʈ Talk! or Diannaa TALK of who your referrals are. Once again, thanks for your support! Diannaa TALK 02:22, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

BLP PRODs

Hi there, I've noticed you've been adding a lot of BLP PRODs to newly created articles today, particularly some footballers. This is all well and good, but I think the idea is that you actually look for sources before placing these tags willy-nilly, or else it creates a lot of work for other editors. Respectfully, BigDom 20:55, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll remove any remaining, as both articles you tagged had references (your tagged version of Craig Strachan, Stephen Hill). Just because there are no inline citations (which are preferable but not required) does not mean they do not have references. Airplaneman 02:26, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As I said on IRC, it's only detrimental to BLP prod articles which are perfectly notable. If you can't take the time to look for existing sources yourself, don't make others do it on a deadline. fetch·comms 18:43, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NICE interview (update)

A few weeks ago, you expressed interest in being interviewed about your experiences with the NICE user script. Somehow, that interview didn't get scheduled. It's getting a bit old and annoying

So can you please learn some html and stop copying my userpage ideas? AKA the displaytitle trick. You've copied basically every design I've crafted for a few months now; then you get tired and move onto something else. I'll let this one slide, but in the future, please try to be a bit more creative. fetch·comms 17:37, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fetchcomms, note that many other users employ that technique. I'll attempt to be "more creative" in the future. Also, I used the displaytitle thing before you used it... monopending changes begin june 15 19:34, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I don't see any link to fetchcomm's page or Ale jrb's page on your userpage. To properly attribute, you must provide the link. For example, I have a link to user:Muzemike on my userpage (bottom right) because I copied the frame of my userpage from his. Airplaneman 19:40, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Misuse of WP:IGLOO

You restored the vandalism on the article Haiti after Elockid (talk · contribs) reverted it, using aWP:IGLOO. The diff is here. Please be more careful reverting in the future. Immunize (talk) 17:55, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Elockid was quick to revert, while I was in the process of reverting, so it got screwed up. I immediately reverted my edit to his/her page; Haiti was reverted too quickly for me to self-revert. Cheers, monopending changes begin june 15 18:03, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wait a minute—I thought you were against using semi-automated tools such as this? Anyway, this wasn't really misuse, Immunize. I thought igloo warned you when reverting a trusted user, though. I thought igloo warned also when you were reverting and the diff displayed was not the most recent. That is what it does for me, anyway. Airplaneman 20:04, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't say that for me; probably got mangled in "edit conflict-space". Where did I say that I was against automation? I'm against disruptive automated editing, like a pattern of incorrect reverts. This was one edit; not 10. monosock 20:12, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Works fine for me. There's always something wrong with topicons. They've never been fully reliable, because when they look great for some, the look messed up for others. For example, in Chrome, the "Mono is Offline" appears right below the line, while in Firefox, it appears further below the line. For whatever configuration you're using, it overlaps it. There's really no way to get them perfect AFAIK. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:14, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The name you put, however, has both a space and a period. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:40, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
All righty, I think I've got how the rules work. The thing is, it's up to you to put in all the rules, as it requires you to enter keywords that would make the article fall under WikiProject Apple Inc. As a result, I've edited the rules page (Edit: Moved to here) as an example for you to follow. I'll try to explain how the rules work in a more simplistic and less confusing fashion than that of the official instruction page, if that's all right.
First, I'll tell you how it works in a nutshell. On the rules page, you specify certain words and associate a point value to them. Whenever a new article is created, the bot searches the article to see whether or not any of those specified words are present. If and when it detects one of the words, it adds the point value for the word in a running total. If the total point value meets or surpasses a certain point value, known as the threshold, the bot lists that article for the WikiProject once the search if completed.
Now here's the technical stuff. The stuff in red is the actual code; the stuff in black are the labels I've put it.
@@15@@ <--The number in between the at-signs is the threshold point value
10/\WMac/ <--This is a rule; the bot looks for the word "Mac", and if found, it adds ten points.
15/\WApple/ <--This is another rule; the bot looks for the word "Apple", and if found, it adds fifteen points.
The threshold value is pretty self-explanatory. Moving on to the rules: as you can see, the point value goes first, followed by a foward slash and "\W". The reason why "\W" is placed there is that it makes it so that "Mac" is the only keyword recognized in the article; otherwise, any part of the keyword would work, such as "Ma". After the "\W", you place the keyword. You then finish it off with another forward slash.
One other thing to note: if the keyword appears in the lead of the article, double the points are added to the total. So for example, if the word "Mac" appears in the lead of an article, twenty points would be added instead of the normal ten points. As a result, the article would be automatically added to the new pages list of the WikiProject (unless a negative value is specified for another keyword, taking it back down to below 15).
There are some other things you can mess with to make the rules even more specific, but I don't think those are necessary at this point (and, I also don't feel like learning how they work). Hope this helps; if it still doesn't make sense, you can ask about whatever you're confused about, or perhaps EdoDodo can help you out better. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 23:44, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for such a in-depth reply. I played with it in my sandbox, and I'll work more on it later. Cheers! mono 19:35, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Going on with the Apple Inc.-theme...I was quite shocked to learn that I never received my apple with a bite taken out of it for assessing more than 0 articles for the Backlog Elimination Drive for May 2010. Archiving

Hello, Mono, I have a question for you, if you happen to know some Wikicode. What parameters do you have to set for this:

{{archives | auto = {{{auto|no}}} | root = {{{root|}}} | links = {{{links|}}} | 1 = {{{1|}}} | image = {{{image|Replacement filing cabinet.svg}}} | style = {{#if:{{{box-width|}}}|width:{{{box-width}}};}} {{{style|}}} | collapsible = {{{collapsible|}}} | collapsed = {{{collapsed|}}} | search = {{{search|no}}} | search-break = {{{search-break|}}} | search-width = {{{search-width|}}} | search-button-label = {{{button-label|}}} | index = {{{index|}}} | title = {{{title|[[Help:Archiving a talk page|Archives]]}}} | editbox = {{{editbox|no}}} | bot = {{{bot|}}} | age = {{{age|}}} | units = {{{units|days}}} | botnotesmall = {{{botnotesmall|}}} }}

so that I can manually archive without a bot watching over me, and the title that it displays is changed from "Archives" to "Previous", as well as having different titles in Archive sections like "Piggy Bank". (P.S. I'm supposed to be asleep but I've got some case of insomnia.)—Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.108.1.199 (talkcontribs)

Tel, is that you? As far as I can tell, it is all detailed at Template:Archives#Parameters. For the custom titles, you can create this page, similar to this page and use {{archives|archivelist= /archivelist}}, which makes it read from User talk:Mono/archivelist (or whatever your username is). Finally, you can use |title=YOUR TITLE to set the title. See example above. The help desk might be able to help even more if you need it, or you could keep asking me. PS, Wikipedia cannot offer medical advice (for your insomnia) mono 19:33, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey mono. Would you be interested in doing a Report on WikiProject Universities for either August 2 or 9? I can't do it myself since I'm pretty active over there. Featuring WP Univ in early August would be nice since college students typically go back to school in mid to late August. I have filed a RfC. monosock 22:56, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This has been discussed before with no consensus as the outcome. Don't feel like looking for the link. There are better things to do than argue over secret pages, IMHO. Airplaneman 01:29, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just want to point out: Secret pages ≠ Vandal pages ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:50, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) You're talking about secret pages, which are in the comment section above. Vandalism pages are said to be way more disruptive. And in regards to the comments above, like I said, the secret page is useless as the user has abandoned it. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 01:51, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage issues

A recent editor (which I won't mention due to privacy purposes) has expressed concern about the neutrality of my userpage. Now I'm not sure if a userpage has to be neutral, as there are plenty of userboxes out there that are not meant to be neutral and still allowed on a userpage. Do you think you could give me some feedback about my userpage? P.S. Being a minor seems tough. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 01:57, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WP Apple in the Signpost

WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Apple Inc. for a Signpost article to be published in July. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Also, if you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 02:39, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WP report on The Signpost

It's good! I hope you don't mind that I've made a few edits. BTW, I prefer to have a low profile, and it was rather kind of Nilotpal to put my name on the Sister projects article this week—definitely not expected. Tony (talk) 09:57, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mono, you are too kind as well! One thing I notice is that the photos are mostly US-related. Are you sold on use of the horizontal gallery at the top? The very first pic I've always thought was magnificent, and it needs to be a little larger.
May I pester one or two of the members for some morsels of extra info? Whom do you suggest? Tony (talk) 17:24, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead and pester them. I try to use featured content (there's none on enWP, so I went to commons), which is a little US-heavy. I'm still playing with the images, so you can change them if you like. It looks different on every computer... monosock 17:31, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RFC: Vandalspaces

Hi Mono; just want to say that it's probably a better idea to make a separate proposal at Wikipedia_talk:User_pages#Just_a_note_.28and_a_page_break.29 below the old one along with all of its comments, rather than to just cross out your old one and replace it with a new one. It'll get confusing, since there's already a bunch of comments and opposes for the old one. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 23:42, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mono, got a very helpful email response from one editor at Ships. RL work is suddenly highly pressured, but despite this, I'll be back to the page Sunday/Monday. Is it OK if I rationalise the pics? Tony (talk) 08:48, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Do whatever you like, I'll finish up any loose ends. mono 17:13, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Mono, the new horizontal arrangements of the pics were allowing bits of text to leak upward, between the Iowa and the box, and between each pair of pics further down, depending on how wide one's window is. That's why I experimented with making them larger (larger than is appropriate, I think, and so does The ed on my talk page). Haus now suggests "putting <div style="width:700px;"> on the first line and </div> on the last line. This will prevent pictures from squishing together." I guess I'll try it. Read the code for that. It's a subpage. /header is User talk:Mono/header (uses the page name as the base page), so the code is at User talk:Mono/header. All that does is show the image if the page size is small. fetch·comms 14:25, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, if you need assistance, I wonder whether it might help if a list of possible discussions were created and the reportage of them then allocated to share the burden. Thanks for the link, Mono. Do you already have a list of possible discussions to choose from at the draft page? Home invasion in Britain

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Hi Mono. You objected to the speedy deletion tag I'd put on Home invasion in Britain. So what is the procedure after merging pages to delete the superfluous page? There isn't much activity, but people have had ample time to respond and the consensus was (I thought - you may disagree) that 'Home invasion in Britain' should be merged into Munir Hussain and victims' rights. You asked me to review the criteria, but I had already done so and this section is why I tagged it "Before nominating a page for speedy deletion, consider whether it could be improved, reduced to a stub, merged or redirected elsewhere, reverted to a better previous revision ..." Aarghdvaark (talk) 09:36, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd just redirect it to the other page, or if the redirect falls under any speedy deletion criteria here, tag it as that. mono(how's my driving?) 17:22, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.

Your new layout

Just a note: The black apple covers a part of the first section's header. Brambleclawx 18:06, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, how awful! mono(how's my driving?) 18:09, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I've also just fixed a link in your header. Rock drum Ba-dumCrash 18:10, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Other than the apple, I quite like the pretty blue banner. It's nice. Brambleclawx 18:13, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Same; the apple covers the first header. And it displays as gray for me. Airplaneman Review? 01:45, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Tried a fix using <br />. Feel free to revert if you don't like it. Airplaneman Review? 01:49, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed there are no links to your archives anymore. Airplaneman Review? 01:52, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hm, the new layout is nice but it doesn't properly attribute the images which are not in the public domain. You will need to find some way to attribute the authors of these images since you've replaced the link to their description pages with links to your user pages. For an example where this is done properly, see User:Jack Merridew (on a day he is not displaying a public domain image; like today). –xenotalk 01:51, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. (Someone should probably drop User:AxG a note, too). Another way to do this would be something like the following. –xenotalk 16:24, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
