Rock music Wikiproject invitation

Hello WikiProject Metal member.
WikiProject Metal music is important in expanding encyclopedic coverage of the metal. It brings attention to the lesser-known bands, and significantly improves the quality of the famous ones. Five Featured articles and two formers is proof of that.
This is the stuff I wish to achieve with the somewhat recently resurrected WikiProject Rock music. I hope to also attract attention to rock music articles of all sorts, and hopefully change some to GA or FA status. I invite you to come join us, and embrace the links between metal and rock music in general.
Rock on.

Experimenting template

Hi there, thanks for your helpful note on my talk page, I'm not sure what to make of it though... I noticed vandalism on the War of 1812 page, and thought I would revert it... so I went to the history page, clicked undo on the current revision... The whole process was sort of confusing and I'm not sure I was successful. Any specific insight would be appreciated. btw, doesn't that template sound a tad condescending towards a newbie with good intentions? cheers, 24.68.135.133 19:35, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Advice requested

Hi Mushroom. I've been attempting to overview and tidy up the geography cats which involve the places where people live. There appear to be two useful ways of doing it - by region, and by size. Organising by size is difficult because User:Hmains uses the term settlements to cover all sizes of communities, and has altered dictionary definitions [1] to fit his own understanding of the term - [2]. However, community appears to be the term used most often to describe the places where people live, regardless of size. This is the definition of community - [3]. Hmains has reverted much of my work, and insists on settlements being the term we should use - basing it on this decision, which was a declined proposal to rename Settlements by region to Populated places by region. What do you think? Is settlement the appropriate term for covering human communities ranging from well established cities down to refuge camps? Is Human community a viable alternative? Are there other choices? I have started a discussion here and here, with the above wording, but no response as yet. I have left this message on the talk pages of active Geography Project members. And then on this page. I am a bit lost as the best place to discuss this issue. I don't want to delete or rename any category. And I don't want to get into a revert war. I'd like an open debate to reach sensible consensus. I'm now leaving this message on the pages of WikiProject Category members. Can you advise? SilkTork 19:56, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Notability tags, Chris Nudds

When you leave a {{Notability}} tag such as the one you left at Chris Nudds, please consider including the type of notability as an argument in the tag, such as {{notability|biographies|date=March 2007}}. In the case of Chris Nudds, I think that notability is supported by the multiple independent references, including the one from the Guardian, a national newspaper in the United Kingdom. --Eastmain 21:39, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Can you cite other sources? Only cite on the page is from their website, which inder notability isn't acceptable. Thanks --194.125.103.165 17:16, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

See the IFPI site here: nine of their albums went gold and one went platinum. Their records entered the Finnish charts multiple times (examples: [4], [5]), and they also made multiple international tours (they were at Wacken 2006, Dynamo 2002 and 2004). I have changed the {{importance}} template with an {{unreferenced}} one, because the article definitely needs more sources. Mushroom (Talk) 18:35, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Cordoba.jpg

Hello, you deleted an image I had uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons, called Cordoba.jpg. I tagged it as in the public domain, as the image was of a paitning that is approximately 500 years old, which to the best of my knowledge complies with the concept of public domain cited in wikimedia.

I don't recall having received a request for attribution of the image, but now it is gone. Can you tell me what happened? Thanks. Larry Dunn 13:28, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I did not delete your image: I deleted a different image with the same name, uploaded by User:Garmian. The image on Commons was deleted by User:FrancoGG, so you should ask him (actually, I cannot delete images from the Commons since I am not an administrator there). Camino Chronicle

I just logged on earlier today, and saw that there were deletes pending for all my entries: Susan Alcorn (Author), and three of her books (Camino Chronicle is one). I read the comments on Susan Alcorn, and there were some things I needed to do, and there were some misunderstandings amoung the wikipedia commenters. I went back to each of the books, and I think addressed the issues, and removed the pending delete. I then went to fix the Susan Alcorn entry and it had been deleted. I can't even find the discussion about the delete. I also couldn't find who had posted the deletes on the books, since it just had an ip address.

I realize I need to rebuild the Susan Alcorn entry from scratch, but is there a way I can post to the original delete discussion? (Backpack45scb 01:54, 13 April 2007 (UTC))

The discussion is here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Susan Alcorn (author). If you think the deletion was wrong, you can request an "undeletion" at Wikipedia:Deletion review. Mushroom (Talk) 14:27, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Advice on vandal

Hi there, I'm having trouble editing the wiki page Sun Ho. Everytime I try to include something controversial about this lady, User Jing13 keeps deleting mine and other people's edits as well. This lady is publically known celebrity in Singapore, and many editors are trying to highlight the controversial nature of her actions (She was a pop star and a pastor at the same time for a few years, and recently denied ever being a pastor, causing an uproar in Singapore. She has since moved to the USA.).

In addition, User Jing13 has removed the edits of other users from the wiki pages City Harvest Church and Kong Hee. Kong Hee is the founder of City Harvest Church and Sun Ho's husband. In effect, these wiki pages have become public relations advertising for them, which I feel is against the spirit of free speech.

I'm finding this user's actions very frustrating and comparable to censorship. I have previously issued warnings but that has not worked. Any advice on how to deal with this issue would be extremely helpful.

Thank you for your time. Mark Choo

Hena

Hi, could you please add the hanzi for hena? A lot of people haven't heard that term before. Is this an Aboriginal word or from the Hokkien language? If the latter, is the term also used in Fujian, China? Finally, does "hena" refer to a specific type of two-string fiddle (there are many, even in Taiwan), or only to the erhu? Thank you, Badagnani 17:09, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I made that edit because the Taiwanese metal band Chthonic has an erhu player and they call it hena:
  • "Hena, which is an Oriental two-string violin, is a common traditional instrument in many Eastern Asian countries." [6]
  • "Chthonic uses the traditional Oriental stringed instrument Hena, which can be compared to an eastern violin." [7]
  • "The album sees Chthonic use a Hena, a traditional Asian instrument comparable to a violin." [8]
  • "But nobody had a Hena, the oriental violin, for me to borrow." [9]
What I didn't know, though, is that hena is apparently just a different romanization of erhu, because the hanzi are the same (二胡). It's certainly not Tongyong Pinyin, so what could it be? I don't know. Anyway, I have now removed it from the erhu article. Mushroom (Talk) 18:39, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
I still don't know where hena comes from. It may not be a Mandarin word at all: maybe the band thinks that hena is the correct English word for the instrument. The problem is, no one else uses it. I guess the only way to know is to ask the band itself. Mushroom (Talk) 12:41, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

RE: Welcome!

Thank you very much for this kind welcome - Really appreciated! I'm still a wiki newbie so I strive to do my best, and I'm still quite cautious with the wiki-formatting, hoping not to make mistakes. I'm an Italian mother tongue too (being on the English Wikipedia I'm writing you in English, would it be considered somehow unpolite by others if we talk in Italian here?), and my contributions are still few, but as far as I can (ie, now that I'm on vacancy!) I try to be here.

Could I take advantage of you kindness and ask you two questions, please?

1) Would you mind taking a rapid look at the contributions I made on the articles about Italian intelligence agencies (they are very short :-) )? I mean, just to see if I'm on the right way (respecting policies and guidelines etc.), just to have a first rough idea.

2) Just before I discovered your message in my user talk page, I was in the process of expanding some stubs/articles, and I decided to move a very small stub (the voice Italian Parliamentary Committee on Secret services control) to a new-name voice I created for this purpose (the voice COPACO), but then I discovered this was a mistake, because one can't redirect an old voice to a new one if it already exist: the correct process would've been first to move the stub to a new name voice (COPACO), and then expand that voice. Now both the voices are present: the first ("Italian Parliamentary Committee" etc..) is the original one, the other (COPACO) is the one I tried to ameliorate and expand from the first one. So the first is a "duplicate", and I would like to remove it. Do you think I should ask for the deletion of the page, or perhaps it is considered more polite to ask the user who created the first stub if he/she agrees to the name change?

Please forgive both my ignorance and this boring request, and especially in case this is considered somehow overbold or unconventional. Hope sooner or later (sooner!) I can help others too, thanks a lot again for you kindness and caring :-) Elastix DePilus 05:56, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

words

My endormorhine article was a hoax. I've been wanting to learn how to use wikipedia for awhile now so I can make major contributions to nutrition and health( there's soooo!!!!! much misinformation about nutrition its utter sickening), however, I didn't want to mess up with a real article and I'm learning with a fake one(or so I thought). So granted, I might not be within the scope of the spirit of wikipedia I believe I am within the scope of user policies. I haven't read anything so far to say what I'm doing is 100% wrong and not to do it. Granted you have good intentions however, in your haste to enforce wikipedia's policies you've inadvertendly broken the policies by acting too quickly on the matter of endomorphin and endomorphine. With a little digging it looks like endomorphine is a real word and should not be redirected to endomorphin. Granted I don't have the right definiation, thats not an excuse to redirect it. If you'd like to edit the real definition go ahead, its your right as a Wikipedian. So I hope you learn from your mistakes as I will mine.

Removed copyrighted dictionary definitions.

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Javacaliente (talkcontribs) 19:10, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Endomorphine is the French and German word for endomorphin and also a common English misspelling for it. It is not an adjective. Mushroom (Talk) 19:34, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

You obviously didn't read the dictionary I pasted in this dialog. I pasted endomorph. You're stuck on endomorphin and endomorphine( French and German spellings). There's no reason why you can't add an ine to endomorph to get an English endomorphine unrelated to the French and German spellings. Why is it "not" an adjective? I'm in the United States of America and I'm allowed to use copyrighted material for educational purposes regardless of Wikipedia's user policies. Not to mention I'm a licensed user of that dictionary, which also gives me rights to use it(since I paid for it) I'm not sure what laws are in Italy. So whats with the "Removed copyrighted dictionary definitions", was that you being high and mighty or is that a wiki bot automatical removing it? Sorry I didn't search the French and German wikipedia's for those words. I'm just stuck in English(I was in the English portion of Wikipedia). Even with what you said being true, its no excuse to use a redirect link( or am I totally wrong?). Alas, you should have said that in the page and posted a link for people to follow and deleted my obviously absurd descriptions that nobody in their right might would buy or believe and would look for a real source. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Javacaliente (talkcontribs) 01:53, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Quick answers:
  1. The adjective is endomorphic, not endomorphine. You can't take any random word and just add -ine to make an adjective: game -> gamine?
  2. You can use that dictionary at home, but you can't post copyrighted text on Wikipedia: see Wikipedia:Copyrights.
  3. Please read what do we use redirects for: misspellings, alternate spellings, other languages, etc.

RE: COPACO

Hi Mushroom,

about your last post ("COPACO") on my user page discussion page:

1) Perfect! - Just liked to be reassured for the first time that I'm not messing up with the wiki interface and policies ;-)

>if you have any doubts about Wikipedia policies please feel free to ask.

>I should add that I am being somewhat inactive these days, so I might be unresponsive.

>If that happens, you can use the help desk, or contact another administrator, if needed.

Ok, in case of doubt I will ask someone using one of these ways.

2) Perfect, now everything is alright.

>I don't think there will be any objections, considering the parallel with SISMI, SISDE and CESIS

>and the fact that COPACO is the most widely used name for the committee.

That was exactly the same rationale I adopted when I thought about merging the old page to a new one called "COPACO". ;-)

Please let me finally ask you only a couple of questions about the "correct" way to reply to a message:

1) How can I reply directly to the original message (instead of creating a new one), so that messages pertaining to the same "thread" or argument are grouped together, separated by spaces? To understand what I mean, please refer, for example, to [[10]].

2) When I wrote you my first message (and the same applies for this one too), I clicked on the small plus (+) sign next to your "Discussion" page, so that in your "History" page this comment appeared: "←Added section: RE: Welcome!" (Cfr. (07:56, 6 September 2007 (←Added section: RE: Welcome!)). Is this the right way to post a new message in the userpage's discussion? I'm asking because, at a superficial look, it seems to me I'm the only one using this "method". To understand what I mean, please refer, for example, to the message "Re: Welcome" left to you by User:Cube lurker, whose comment was marked as "Reply", and not "Added section" in the "History" page (Cfr. (04:27, 6 September 2007 Cube lurker (Talk | contribs) (134 bytes) (reply) (undo))).

3) To reply to specific points, is it acceptable/is it deprecated to use the ">" signs (as I did at the beginning of this message), like in the e-mail practice, or is there another way made available by the wiki interface?

Thanks again for your time and kindess, Elastix DePilus 17:12, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Elastix,
Sorry for not answering sooner.
There is no standard way to reply to a message: you can choose to do so on your talk page, on the other user's talk page, or both. I prefer to keep discussions together, so if a user leaves a message here I usually reply here (except with newbies, because I'm not sure they will check this page). You just click on the edit button at the top right of the section and then indent the reply using colons (:), like this:
Hi there. [[Jack]]
:Hi. [[Lisa]]
::How are you? [[Jack]]
:::I'm fine. [[Lisa]]
The result is this:
Hi there. Jack
Hi. Lisa
How are you? Jack
I'm fine. Lisa
(">" signs are not generally used).
Of course, this way the other user will not get notified of the reply. But he/she will probably check your talk page anyway, or you can leave him/her a short message. A good alternative is to copy-paste the entire discussion on the other user's talk page and reply there (still using colons for the indentation).
The plus (+) button is used to create a new section, so you can click on it when you want to start a new discussion, or if you are moving the discussion to the other user's page. However, you are not required to do so, and many Wikipedians ignore it altogether: you can always edit a talk page like you would edit an article. For more information, you can read Wikipedia:Talk page and Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. Mushroom (Talk) 17:09, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

hold your horses

would you care to elucidate how "Afrocentric Egyptology" is an "implausible typo"? A typo for what? It is, much rather, a valid move target for the awkwardly titled troll magnet Race and ancient Egypt (controversies). You may observe the term in use by an Egyptologist here. --dab (𒁳) 17:45, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Oops, sorry about that. It was a mistake. Mushroom (Talk) 17:49, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
could you undelete it, then? [personal attack removed]. Mushroom (Talk) 18:42, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
I have restored all revisions of both Afrocentric Egyptology and Afrocentrist Egyptology. Mushroom (Talk) 18:12, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

The reason that it was deleted was not due to typo. Mushroom, what are you doing? Please don't be fooled into thinking that the pages are relevant, it violates neutral POV first of all since it labels an irrelevant article as being "afrocentrst Egyptology", a phrase that makes no sense as an Afrocentrist is a person. Secondly, there is no such cited discipline named "Afrocentric Egyptology" and no one in academia connects it with "race and ancient egypt controversies".. The user participated in another pov-fork that had to do with that page in which an entire copy and paste article was created, and it was created on the exact same day that he first created that nonsense redirect page. People can't just go around making up names and linking them to whatever article they want. During discussion he accused to article of being "afrocentric" with out citing how, so he took his pv pushing further by directing it to a page named "afrocentric egyptology, since the page is protected and discussions are going nowhere. This was to impose pov, blatantly and the pages are useless, not notable, misnomers, original research, and everything in betweens and warrants permanent deletion. Can I do the same thing then and redirect an article that says "unbiased Egyptology"? It entails the same thing.Taharqa 18:27, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

And now you're allowing personal attacks to where he can just label people as trolls also? Bias? Is he really an admin?Taharqa 18:29, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm not saying that those redirects are relevant or NPOV, I'm just saying that there is no criterion under which they could possibly be speedy deleted: POV and "original research" are not criteria for speedy and "no context" is not applicable to redirects. So I made a mistake when I deleted them. Since you still think they should be deleted, I suggest that you nominate them for deletion. I have also removed the personal attack. Mushroom (Talk) 18:42, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
  1. 3Recently created redirects from implausible typos or misnomers. However, redirects from common misspellings or misnomers are generally useful, as are redirects in other languages.

^This applies to "Afrocentrist" Egyptology.. What need is there for Afrocentrist and Afrocentric Egyptology, when they both supposedly mean the same made-up thing, except one is a typo? "Afrocentrist" is a person.Taharqa 19:23, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

As I see it, asserting that someone is a Professor at a Research university --at Temple I suppose qualifies, though admittedly it isn't Harvard--is at least a minimal assertion of importance, however sketchy the article. Doesn't mean someone is necessarily important, but its an assertion--and almost all such articles have been successfully defended at AfD. Could you please therefore undelete Joseph P. Folger. Deletion problem

Something odd seems to have happened with the deletion for <nowiki;WollstonecraftVRM.jpg</nowiki>. It was only supposed to be deleted at wikipedia, but it is now also missing at the commons. The reason I asked for it to be deleted was because a better, free version was available at the commons. I'm a bit mystified. today you deleted Rob Mungle, and the reason for which is still one I am trying to understand. I don't even have the ability to use what you call Twinkle or what it may be called. Whatever scripting knowledge I use is strictly acquired from source observation from here. If only you'd tell me directly what needed to be done, I wouldv'r made the necessary changes. And besides, all voice actors pages are important regardless of the lack of extended information, dont you think?

so this ends my formal request to review the deletion of the Rob Mungle page.

I didn't delete it because of TW or the lack of information. I deleted it because it was a blatant copyright infringement on this website, whose copyright notice says:
All content included on this site, such as text, graphics, logos, button icons, images, audio clips, video clips, digital downloads, data compilations, and software, is the property of IMDb or its content suppliers and protected by United States and international copyright laws.
So it can't be copied. Feel free to recreate the article without using that text. Mushroom (Talk) 03:57, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
i would like to have to have it undeleted so I can do so immediately, that way i wont have to scramble the sites for his important roles, i apologise for this whole heartedly. (actual comment replying method unknown). Murakumo-Elite 04:16, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
I have restored a non-infringing revision of the article. Mushroom (Talk) 10:24, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
