Cataract Falls Covered Bridge

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I've created an article requested at Wikipedia:Requested articles#Images needing articles from a photograph you took of the Cataract Falls Covered Bridge (in case you wish to add/edit/remove something). Cheers ~ ~ benzband (talk) 23:39, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Frantz's Bridge again

Sorry to be so confusing and sorry that I made a mistake - I could not access CRGIS yesterday and I somehow got mixed up and thought this was not part of the PennDOT multiple bridges on the NRHP TR listing. I have uploaded the photo to Commons and placed it in the Frantz's Bridge article. I only have limited internet access this week, so sorry this took me until now. I do like the pictures of the cabins at Kooser State Park you added today. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:09, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

You are very welcome. I am not sure what the new Laurel Hill State Park picture is from you though, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:07, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation of the Laurel Hill photo (and sorry not to reply before). I checked with User:KLOTZ (on Commons) and he did not have a picture of Frantz's Bridge. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:59, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

N.R. art colony

FYI, I deleted New Rochelle art colony, the speedy deletion of which you had earlier declined.

Your rationale "seems to be a decent article" is an apt description of the vast majority of this banned user's work -- with emphasis on the word "seems". Investigation generally reveals a variety of issues: that the cited sources don't actually support the content, that the content is a copyvio of some other source that was (conveniently) not cited, and/or that the "sources" are online content created and disseminated by the banned user. I suspect, but I have not bothered to try to prove, that he personally invented the notion of a "New Rochelle art colony".

A lot of Wikipedia content is kept merely because it "seems to be decent", but that kind of AGF-based rationale should not apply when dealing with a user with a long-term record of trying to foist off misrepresentations. --Orlady (talk) 14:35, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

COPNI

Hi Nyttend,

There are probably half a dozen governmental offices that create accounts that promote what they do. The name is an abbreviation of the commission WP:ORGNAME and they are promoting what they do (I think what they are doing is good, but we don't promote what governments or businesses do). The user account name also suggest shared use, which is against policy. Almost all accounts that violate promotional user names also violate WP:ISU, but I always tag them with for promotional accounts. For me personally, I just hate to see Wikipedia uses promotionally and to maintain neutrality, I tag all users who use promotional names--I am One of Many (talk) 17:12, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Categories and the Hub

Thanks for the note re. renaming Commons categories. That'll undoubtedly be a real help at some point in the future. Luckily, the category whose misspelling Doncram caught didn't have all that many files in it; but one of these days I'll discover that I've just uploaded fifty or sixty files and put them in [[Category:Smith-Jones Historic Distirct]].

I read the Hub when I'm in Kearney, and occasionally send them a letter-to-the-editor. Their state, national international coverage is fairly minimal, and I rely on the Omaha World-Herald for that sort of thing. Mostly, I read the Hub to keep up with local news. I'm not much of a sports enthusiast, so I can't really comment on that section. Hope your friend enjoys it; I like Kearney myself, but it might be a bit of a shock for someone who's lived in major urban areas all his life. Ammodramus (talk) 10:27, 13 July 2013 (UTC)

Goodland and WebM

I'd seen the "Thou shalt not park here" sign somewhere before, maybe it was in Goodland (not so far from Lafayette). Or maybe it just has something to do with midwestern church humor vs. the east coast version. I won't even start in on meetinghouse humor.

AS far as WebM, I'd thought that the WMF techies had it all set up (silly me). Ruhrfisch said that it didn't work on one of his computers but did work on another. I'll suggest this page http://www.webmproject.org/users/#supported_web_browsers which shows that most newer browsers support it automatically, but with Windows IE 9 and later requires some downloads of components.

I'd first check it out on another computer to see if it works for you there. More later but keep me informed. BTW what do you see where the video is in the article before you click the start arrow? Smallbones(smalltalk) 22:29, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Well I've certainly been on US 41/52 not so far away, as well as on I-65. Yes, even in Watseka, Il and I got lost in Rensselaer, Indiana, though I remember thinking that this shouldn't be possible in such a small town. You are seeing what you're supposed before hitting the go triangle. I'll ask Fabrice Florin at WMF if there is a magic solution, other than buying a new computer. BTW, go with a Mac, you'll never regret the switch. All the best. Smallbones(smalltalk) 01:08, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Template:Australian mobile phone companies/doc

Hi Nyttend, I wanted to ask why you declined a G6 on Template:Australian mobile phone companies/doc. It may be old, but if it's redirecting to another template's main page, that seems just plain wrong. Another editor at RfD agreed. It looked like a no-brainer G6 to me. Shouldn't this be deleted to make room for proper documentation? --BDD (talk) 15:19, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Mars Case

I don't understand the reference to off-wiki conduct that you included in your statement about my arbitration request having to do with Mars. That case is entirely about tendentious editing and personal attacks on talk pages. (It is true that one editor was attacking another editor based partly on his off-wiki posts, but the attacks were on article talk pages.) Was your comment intended for another case? Robert McClenon (talk) 01:19, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

I thought that was what happened. My case may be declined, because the arbitrators appear to be thinking that there are other dispute resolution vehicles to be considered first, but, as you can see, it has to do with disruptive editing of Wikipedia. No offense taken. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:57, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Sergiu Cristian Popovici

I'd like you to reconsider your evaluation of this article. You say that there were substantive contributions by Ostasul (talk · contribs) and Cocorescu (talk · contribs). Cocorscu's edit was formatting, and Ostasul's added one sentence. I don't really see how that constitutes a substantial contribution to the article. On top of that, I suspect that Ostasul is also a sockpuppet. His first few edits were all to articles created by HIDECCHI2013 (talk · contribs), who created Sergiu Cristian Popovici, and it wouldn't be the first time Cyperuspapyrus (talk · contribs) used sleeper accounts. Move Duckworth RfC to BLPN

Hello. You are one of 6 or 7 Admins who has supported including DOB info in the Duckworth article: Talk:Tammy Duckworth#RfC on providing full date of birth. Yesterday I proposed moving the discussion to the BLPN so that we could get a policy determination on this and thereby avoid such prolonged and repeated discussions on article talk pages. In the last few comments I haven't seen a positive to my proposal. Would you care to opine on moving the discussion? (I am posting this message to each of the admins.) Thanks. – S. I seem to have a shadow

As you can figure, me and The Rambling Man don't get along. Anyway, yesterday he began tagging all these town and city articles as you are well aware of. TRM began tagging articles notable people sections yesterday afternoon beginning with Two Rivers, Wisconsin. He did this for I think is a total of 28 articles over a half hour, the last of which was Yreka, California. He then began doing town articles again about 10 hours. If you stop at Bear Creek, Outagamie County, Wisconsin, and check their page histories you'll notice one thing in common. I was the last editor to work the articles(before TRM) or the next to last in about 5 or 6 of all the articles from Two Rivers to Outagamie. Why was he only doing articles I worked on? Is it coincidence or possibly a form of wikihounding? Just asking for your opinion. I'm sure TRM will chime in. FYI I mentioned this last night in an off wiki email to another editor here. My concerns about having a shadow aren't based on today's accusations by TRM but predate them. Will provide you the email if requested....William 23:23, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

Actually, I count 46 specious tags inserted by The Rambling Man (See Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Tagfest for complete list). Of those, 34 were the next edit after an edit by WilliamJE; 3 were edits of articles that WJE had edited, but not the next edit after WJE; and 9 were of articles that WilliamJE never edited. You might want to check my math. 70.235.85.119 (talk) 00:14, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Not going to double check your math. A cursory glance makes me believe your figures are close if not right on target. I know he did others but after over 25-30 in a row of being connected to my own edit history. How did I know TRM is working on these articles or TFD for Famous? I saw a bunch of my edits without a current next to them and I do participate in TFDs and regularly check if there are any to chime in on.
Cleaning up notable people sections or starting new ones all together, creating 'People from' categories and then filling them up are some of my most common edits here at Wikipedia.(Besides work on golf and aviation articles, cleaning up See also sections, and making sure articles are in WP:ORDER. Nyttend is from Ohio and he may have noticed my making 'People from ______, Ohio categories'. I've done 20 to 25(Celina, Ashland, Washington Court House, East Liverpool, Circleville, Salem, Damascus, Fostoria to name a few) of those. Rule of thumb for me making those categories- Eight or more are from the town, village, or city or the location is in more than one county.
This is my last edit of the night. Its past 9 pm in the part of Florida I reside in and I have to be awake in eight hours....William 01:19, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

What part of "I no longer desire it to be on Wikipedia" don't you understand? I made it, I uploaded it and now I don't want it on Wikipedia any longer. Besides, there is nothing official about the image I made it under info I got about the process and I can't guarantee it's 100% correct. There is no reference. Randolph Mitchell House

Hi there, I see you added a wikilink back to New Lexington, Ohio, on a reference to a book used on the Randolph Mitchell House article. I removed this wikilink because by having it within the Randolph Mitchell House article (not in the body of the article, but on a book used to create the article), it forces "Randolph Mitchell House" to show up in a "what links here" search on the New Lexington article (and it has nothing to do with New Lexington). If you see WP:REF/ES, there are no wiki links around cities listed in the examples. Thanks. Richard Apple (talk) 04:37, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Where are you getting your direction to do this? I've already given a good reason not to, and a Wiki template with an example of it not being done. And in the example, it links "Uckfield, UK". It would be helpful if you could revert your edit. Thanks again. Richard Apple (talk) 04:53, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Christmas tree recycling sounds better than anything I could think of. My best guess was that there might be a nursery nearby and after they dug up the big trees they'd park a truck with the trees on it in the lot. The only problem is that that is completely implausible, why not just contact the nursery? Christmas trees being prohibited from a fire station parking lot has a ring of truth to it. Re your question at WP:ANI#Death threats by SPA

I saw your question on ANI after the section had been closed. Rather than editing at the end of the section or into a closed discussion I thought I'd drop a note on your TP. I took some artistic license on the translation. It's very difficult to translate Chinese insults into something remotely sensible since they tend to lean heavily on ancestry, particularly about one's mother. I can't say I'm able to exactly do the words justice, particularly as I've not come across that particular insult before. Google Translate also has an odd habit of grouping words together to create nonsensical translations. Blackmane (talk) 08:52, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Blanking an article which is at AFD

You effectively blanked Rise of Rome by replacing it with a redirect while it is up for deletion at AFD, contrary to the AFD directions in the template at the top of the page. It wasn't much of an article, and sounded like a high school or college freshman term paper, and was full of unreferenced opinions, which were either borrowed from uncited sourced or were the editor's original research. I would have been for deletion or a Smerge to a history of Rome article, since it did have some references and made some interesting points. But wouldn't it be a good idea to close the AFD before making the article difficult for AFD viewers to read? My apologies if you are in the process of closing the AFD. The article needs to be restored if the AFD is left to run. Regards, Edison (talk) 19:45, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

You stated at my talk page that AFD editors can still view it without difficulty. I suggest that it is more trouble to click on the edit history and go to the pre-redirect version than to just go to the article. By your standard, it would be fine to blank articles at AFD since the AFD participants could find the blanked text in the history. Do you really want to leave the AFD open for the full period with the article replaces by your redirect? Is it doing harm to the project to be readable and editable while the AFD runs? Yes, they can view it with a couple of extra clicks, but editing it is a different story. Sometimes crappy articles get improved during an AFD, which is one reason for non-blanking (except for BLP violations and other policy-driven blanking), though I don't hold out much hope for this one, since we already have a better article on the topic. Challenge #12

Thanks for your interest in the challenge. One note, though it doesn't really matter to me, your photos are not being entered into Wiki Loves Monuments (the ones I checked). My guess is that you are not using their map upload or the text link in our tables to upload, so that some (2?) WLM categories are being left off. As I said it's no big thing (I won't disqualify you). All the best. Smallbones(smalltalk) 22:29, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

I can't think of any really compelling reasons to enter the photos in WLM, but here are 2 possibilities 1) You want to win a prize, or 2) You want to show support for WLM by increasing the number of photos entered. I, of course, just like having the photos on WP! If you want to enter, I think just having {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2013|us}}[[Category:WLM 2013 United States unreviewed]] and the NRHP template with the ref number in the file will do it. BTW, I am entering my (few so far) September photos, having some great illusion that I might win something. But I should say that last year's 3rd place winner - who is really a good photographer - has entered at least 100 pix so far, so my illusions are fading rapidly. Disambiguation link notification for September 11

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Trying to create a legit article for Blue Waffle

Just letting you know I'm attempting to actually make a legit article for Blue Waffle. I know it's a meme/hoax, but I think an article pointing that out, with references, would be a great help to the world. I saw you have once marked this article written by someone else as vandalism. I took a serious approach to it, describing that it is a HOAX, and not a real disease, I also include multiple about templates to ensure that if someone was duped, they would have access to legitimate STD's, Internet hoax's, and false information. I have ref's and found multimedia and quotes. I'm ducking...I feel like I'm gonna have something thrown at me....  :) GlenberryPlace (talk) 18:50, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

I don't know. I thought I saw you on had. Oh well. Sorry to bother you, thanks for the tips. I'll see if I can find more. I'm sure there are, I was pretty focused on the one source from Trenton. I've contacted a user who;s the 1st person to reference the term, that I could find, back in 2010, to get more history on it's origins, but aside from that, I def. need to find more instances where it's been notable. Just want the world to stop falling for the silly joke, cause I'm tired of seeing reaction videos on youtube! That might be one way to help. Perhaps an article on "Reaction Videos", and that containing a list of notable videos and images that "Reaction Videos" are recorded. Ugg. May open a can of worms, but... 2 Girls 1 Cup, MyLazySundays.com, <-- don't visit, (Shows 3 chubby men in a shower...going at it, with the theme song from The Andy Griffith show playing. When you try to close the window, a javascript pop up ask's "Are you sure", and when you go to click OK, the popup moves.) ctrl+alt+del fixes that! Well back on my point, article about reaction videos, then list BW. I've seen other terms like this on Wiki, and they have been around a while. So there's a route to making a legit article. I'm noob, so... Explains a lot. I figured, let's do something hard, then everything else will be easy. If I can't do the hard stuff, then I'll abandon this time waster, brain exerciser, educational tool. Leave it to better equipped people.GlenberryPlace (talk) 12:08, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

IP vandal

This IP editor has been vandalizing several articles by adding unsourced finale airdates of telenovelas in the International Release table. I've warned the editor by telling him that he is not to remove "present" until the last episode is broadcast in a specific country, yet he chose to ignore that rule many times this month. I'm getting sick of his attitude, as he keeps removing "present" and adds unconfirmed finale airdates even though said novelas are STILL airing. His edit history really says everything. Platinum Star (talk) 02:45, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Same deal. Both are the same person, as the edits in the "International release" sections for some of Televisa's novelas are exactly the same. He has been removing "present" and placing an unsourced finale airdate and I've warned him to not do that until the finale episode is broadcast, and he chooses to ignore that policy. In addition to that, novelas that have yet to be broadcast by Univision magically have a premiere date (Libre para amarte and Quiero amarte). Platinum Star (talk) 22:22, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Hey, just a note to let you know I undid your redirect at Robert Goddard Montessori. I don't think redirecting a private school to a public school is reasonable. I agree that this appears to be a completely non-notable school. Let me know if you take it to AFD. Toddst1 (talk) 21:55, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nyttend:

The image you added is a de-listed FP from Commons due to "Very low resolution, unsharp and lighting problems". JKadavoor Jee 13:22, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

I know that, having read the delist discussion, but why do you find it relevant? At a thumbnail resolution, none of those issues matter (you can't possibly see the problems that led to the delist), and the presence of the frog at the waterline makes the reflection stand out better. Meanwhile, the reflection of the cyclist in the other image is interrupted by the bits of pavement between him and the main part of the puddle: it's a Commons FP, but that doesn't mean that its educational value for this specific article is higher. Remember the different standards between Commons FPs and en:wp FPs — Commons looks for visually appealing pictures, while en:wp looks for educational value. You can see the result of these differing standards at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Olive ridley turtles: I nominated a Commons FP for FP here, but it was opposed in large part because it doesn't do a good job of helping viewers understand the turtles. Nyttend (talk) 13:30, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Yes; it is OK in thumbnail; but we usually add images to article for reuse too. I'm not questioning the more EV argument though. We need high resolution and high EV images in articles. You can keep it if you are confident on it than the cyclist image and no better resolution image available now. I too don't think the cyclist image is that much good. (I'm active on both FPC pages and know the difference.) Thank for clearing your stand. JKadavoor Jee 13:50, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Sorry for telling you what you already knew; I've never met you before and didn't realise that you knew the procedures. As I see it, someone looking for reuse images can go to Commons (after all, we have the link at the end of the page), while the primary purpose for putting images in articles is to increase readers' understanding of the article's topic, so we should put EV over reuse when the two conflict. Of course, if someone could find something that's better quality than the frog and better EV than the cyclist, I would agree that it's time to get rid of the frog. Nyttend (talk) 13:54, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
The most reused images are those used in articles. They get much hits than other images too. In fact an EN:FP is much harder than a COM:FP. I have 30 COM:FPs but only 2 or 3 EN:FPs; because my works are technically not so good (due to my cheap camera) even though they have high EVs. :) JKadavoor Jee 14:24, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
What about this, this or this? JKadavoor Jee 06:35, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
The beetle's nice, but (1) it's on glass not water, and I'd guess it better to use something like water; and (2) as noted in the description, it has a weird secondary reflection. Both of the other two are amazing images, and either one would be much better than the frog, but I'm not sure which one to prefer. Mount Hood's flat water does a better job of demonstrating the mirror image itself, but the duck demonstrates how the mirror image can be messed up by ripples. Nyttend (talk) 17:53, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
I too have a difficulty to choose one. Both are good; and I would like to leave the decision to you. :) JKadavoor Jee 03:29, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
Use the mountain. The duck one has ripples in the water. Campoftheamericas (talk) 03:55, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
Done. Thanks for the outside input :-) Nyttend (talk) 04:24, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I am not so familiar with CSD process. I did revert you on File:Twink.jpg. I am not the uploader, nevertheless have taken an interest, since I am acquainted with the subject, who is also the author of the pic. I had in mind the notice on the previous version of the page that said: "If this file does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion, or you intend to fix it, please remove this notice". It seemed to me that your summary "Why does this need immediate deletion?" - asked a question, rather than giving a reason, and thus didn't meet either criteria. Further I had ascertained the likelihood of an imminent alternative free image. I had no idea you were an admin, rather than a random editor just making an enquiry. On the CSD notice, it does say Note to administrators: this file has content on its talk page which should be checked before deletion. With no response there I had no idea else how to respond other than revert and direct you to talk. How am I supposed to know that you are an admin doing CSD housework? And how is requesting dialog on the article's talk page "forum shopping"? I am not trying to get at you, but would like to understand procedure better. Wwwhatsup (talk) 07:59, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. Easy response first: nobody really pays attention to the talk page when the speedy tag is about to be declined, since the provision you quote is basically a way for uploaders/page creators to ask for the deletion to be delayed; we all have more time if you're trying to get me to delete it than if you're trying to keep me from deleting it. Meanwhile, when you find a nonfree image that could be replaced with a free image (or even one that already has been replaced), the standard course of action is to mark it as replaceable: type {{subst:rfu}} on the page to produce a tag that will result in the page being deleted in a couple of days. Tagging for immediate F7 deletion, as you did, is basically for the most egregious cases, so unless it's obviously such a case (e.g. someone gratuitously using a Reuters image), you'd need to specify on the image page (imagine a hidden comment under the speedy tag, or a non-hidden comment) why it's different from the normal replaceable image. Meanwhile, when someone restores a speedy tag I've just removed, they're normally trying to get another admin to come in and delete it, hoping that the other admin won't check the page history and see that it was just declined. Generally, when people are repeatedly F7-tagging images, they're in I-don't-like-it situations, and repeat taggers surprisingly often seem to know that I'm an admin going through the CSD logs — I can't remember the last time that someone repeatedly tagged in good faith, as you've done! I apologise for my misunderstanding and the way this turned out; if such a situation come up in the future, I'd suggest that you talk to the person in question (or at least check the userpage or contributions-and-logs to see if it's an admin going through CAT:CSD), or that you instead take the page to WP:FFD, where it can be discussed and where the criteria aren't so firm. Nyttend (talk) 13:25, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. Just to be clear on my side, it wasn't me who tagged the file in the first place, or uploaded it originally. I saw that it was, and contacted the author to suggest he give it a free license. Eventually he demurred but suggested he would make available another free image shortly. So it's a kind of limbo situation. No free image available at present, but soon will be. I saw no good reason to hang on to this one - a passport photograph - when at least an official publicity photo might be better fair used. So I concurred with the deletion. I didn't disagree with your removal of the CSD on those grounds, I just imagined it uninformed - I should have checked you out. So there are misunderstandings on both sides :) Generally I am an inclusionist but, since this was property of somebody I knew, I decided to intervene. Hopefully the result of the CSD will be that a free image does indeed become available. Wwwhatsup (talk) 19:41, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi.

Similar to the situation with Hamirpur District and Hamirpur district, which you took care of, a couple days ago, I tagged Bilaspur district for CSD G6 deletion and requested move of Bilaspur District to Bilaspur district, with a redirect from Bilaspur district to Bilaspur District. However, nobody has responded. Can you have a look when you get a chance? (Note that, in both cases, I originally tagged the wrong article of the pair, which I fixed about an hour later. It's possible that someone reviewed the nonsensical original tagging and ignored it.) Thanks. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:51, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

On the one hand I'm glad he's recognizing what we wanted him to do; on the other, he had beaucoup opportunities to do so before and he passed them up. Besides, I don't like the qualifier he seems to be putting on this. I can't rule out at this point the same thing happening again if he's unblocked.

However, I don't see the need yet to cut off his talk page, inasmuch as I've done it before, because he's only made this one request. Daniel Case (talk) 22:40, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Yeah ... as I said in response to his other comment above the unblock request, I'm getting less and less likely to support it. Dpmuk put his finger on what I was trying to say. Daniel Case (talk) 01:56, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Given this edit I feel we definitely shouldn't be unblocking at this stage. They seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the problem is. They also don't seem to get that what they consider an obvious correction may be problematic to other people. Taken together I think there's just to high a probability of disruption if we unblock at this stage. Dpmuk (talk) 20:47, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
