January 2020

Information icon Hi PCN02WPS.  I wanted to let you know that political endorsements must meet all three of these criteria:

  1. The endorser must have an article or be unquestionably entitled to one
  2. This endorsement must be covered by reliable and independent sources
  3. Coverage of the endorsement needs to use the word endorse, or other closely related synonym.

This is covered by the consensus at WP:ERFC.

For that reason, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, poker websites, and blogs are not acceptable sources. Also, donating to a campaign or showing up to a campaign rally are not endorsements. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you - MrX 🖋 16:47, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello PCN02WPS,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

IMO, TMZ is not a reliable source and shouldn't be cited at ITN/C. – Sca (talk) 22:41, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Cheez-It Bowl

FYI that Cheez-It is now sponsoring the bowl game played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. Thus what was "Camping World Bowl" is the new "Cheez-It Bowl". The former Cheez-It Bowl game played in Arizona has reverted to being known (at least for now) as the Cactus Bowl. In the news and reported on Twitter. I've submitted a technical move request to have the Cheez-It Bowl page renamed as Cactus Bowl, and then the Camping World Bowl page renamed to Cheez-It Bowl. A bit clunky but I believe it will get things to where they need to be. Dmoore5556 (talk) 14:42, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello PCN02WPS,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

2020 Ivy League football standings

@PCN02WPS: You stated that the standings had to be reverted, yet they announced that there is no college football for the league teams and as a conference.
Sources
With no college football in "2020", then the article is redundant.--Jpp858 (talk) 22:26, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jpp858: Both articles you linked above state that college football will not be played by those conferences in the fall. Both articles state that CFB could still be played in the spring, and do not explicitly state that the season has been cancelled outright and will not be played.
ESPN: No decision has been made about winter or spring Ivy sports or whether fall sports could be played in the spring of 2021.
CNN: A decision on the future of winter or spring sports and whether fall sports could be played in the spring of 2021 will be "determined at a later date," the Ivy League said in a news release.
I think it is unwise to redirect the team season pages and the standings templates before a decision has been made as to whether the season has been permanently cancelled or merely postponed to spring. Should either or both conferences announce that no football will be played at all, I agree that the season pages and standings templates should be redirected. Follow up on AfDs

Hi there PCN02WPS.

Thanks much for driving the edits on the upcoming races. In parallel, please can you let me know of the procedure to withdraw the AfDs for the articles as you continue to fix them? Thanks in Advance. Kaisertalk (talk) 05:37, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

@Kaisertalk: instructions for withdrawing an AfD and closing a discussion as a speedy keep can be found at Wikipedia:Articles for Deletion#Procedure for non-administrator close (nominator withdrawal). There is a step-by-step procedure to doing so, and I am more than happy to help should you need it; just leave me a message here. Just keep in mind that the list at the linked page must be repeated for every nominated article. PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 05:46, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
@PCN02WPS:, Just did this at 2020 Foxwoods Resort Casino 301. Please can you have a look and let me know if that looks good? Will repeat at the other articles. Thanks.Kaisertalk (talk) 05:50, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
@Kaisertalk: the first section of the instructions ("On the deletion discussion page") looks like they were followed pretty well, but the second and third sections ("On the article page" and "On the talk page of the article itself") still need to be done. @PCN02WPS:. I thought I did that on the article page. Let me go read again. Thanks. Kaisertalk (talk) 06:00, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
@Kaisertalk: In addition, I don't think you need to strikethrough your deletion rationale and I think the withdrawal notice can go above the deletion rationale. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2009 Sacred Heart Pioneers football team and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2019 Southern Utah Thunderbirds football team. @Kaisertalk: I think that the concern is mainly regarding the name of the article, rather than the existence of the article itself. In that case, a move can be performed on the article (or, if that would be controversial in any way, the editor can take it to RM. PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 15:26, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

KKmg152 I'm glad that helped! You are correct - TFM refers specifically to merging. Kkmg152, this time I see what you're talking about. The TfD notice appears because Template:Korean name is used (you can see at the top of the page when it says "This is a Korean name; the family name is Han.") This notice has nothing to do with the Han Terra article itself, merely with the template that that page uses. The TfD is a requested merge of many of the "Template: COUNTRY/ETHNICITY name" hatnotes (besides Korean, the Catalan, Chinese, Eastern Slavic, Manchu, Mongolian, Ni-Vanuatu, Ottoman Turkish, and Spanish, as well as the general toponymic are all included in the proposed merge). You can !vote in the discussion and offer your opinion if you wish at this link. That notice will disappear when the TfM is resolved. (Also, just a quick note: please sign your posts on discussion and talk pages by adding ~~~~ to the end of your comment! Thanks.) PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 23:03, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

The article Baldwin Ford, Kentucky has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Rennick calls it a locale (geography), which by definition is not a populated place, so WP:GEOLAND is not met whatsoever. Topographic maps mark this place as a ford. I can only find coverage for a Baldwin Ford Road, which also seems to fail WP:GEOROAD. Not a notable ford in any way, shape, or means.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

January/December bowl games

Hi – looking at bowl schedules for the New Year's Six, in 2021 there will a January and December edition of the Orange Bowl and also the Peach Bowl. Scheduling has an Orange Bowl on January 2, 2021, and on December 31, 2021; and a Peach Bowl on January 1, 2021, and on December 30, 2021. Thoughts on structuring the existing 2021 Orange Bowl and 2021 Peach Bowl pages to use "(January)" distinctions... or wait until we're closer to next year's bowl season? I'm leaning towards making the change now, but wanted to check. Thanks. Dmoore5556 (talk) 17:15, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

From a newbie:-

Thank you, to everyone who helped towards 'upping' the prominence of Bobby Ball death reporting on this wiki.

If we have ***not even*** included an RD inclusion, for such a significant person's death? While doing that, for the deaths of *far* less famous others with 'better curated' articles (due to cultural or intellectual snobbery, perhaps??!!)

Then, we will look as though our heads are "up our own bums". A gig, that we surely must all want to avoid.

The deciding factor, when deciding about RD inclusion, surely ought to be **the event**.

Not, how many points are scored, if the biog article goes through a 'beauty contest' for either presentation or wiki rules compliance.

I think that the main thing that prevents many notable people's articles from being posted on RD is the quality of the article; being featured on the Main Page draws a lot of attention to articles, and we, as a project, would not want to feature any sub-par articles so prominently. All people that have a Wikipedia biography are presumed notable, so how famous a person is doesn't really matter. Of course, there is subconscious bias present in all facets of the project, and it is important that we recognize and fix that when we can. These sorts of improvements that often allow previously un-postable articles to be posted are not just "beauty contests," but genuine improvements in content and sourcing, thereby making the article more reliable. I agree with you when you say that the event itself is important in criteria for posting articles to RD, but it has to be kept in mind that we should only be posting articles that satisfy the criteria and that represent our project's best work. Hello PCN02WPS! I just finished some major edits to the page VEX Robotics, And I would appreciate any feedback you could give me about those edits. Thanks for your help! (Oh, and congrats on receiving the Precious award!) Mpprogram6771 (talk | contribs) 19:00, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

@PCN02WPS: Hey! I was wondering how I would go about recommending VEX Robotics for reclassification as a C-class article, and what I would need to improve beforehand. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks! ~ Mpprogram6771 (talk | contribs) 18:44, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
Mpprogram6771, I'd be happy to help - I'll take a look at it tomorrow and make some recommendations to you. Thanks for your work in improving the article! PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 03:51, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
Mpprogram6771, with the election still ongoing and most of my attention on that, "tomorrow" quickly turned into four days, but I just went through and made a decent amount of copyedits (mostly formatting and MOS stuff) to the page; the page is definitely looking better but could still look even better with some more improvements. @PCN02WPS: Thank you so much for putting in time and effort to help clean up the page! I appreciate everything! Also, I was able to learn a lot from reviewing your edits. Keep up the great work! Mpprogram6771 (talk | work) 16:11, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
Mpprogram6771, just one more quick note - as WikiProject Robotics does not have a "C"-class for its articles (see quality assessment scale here), but the VEX Robotics page is definitely better than start class, I have reassessed it as "B"-class. CFB 12pm changed to Noon (AAC pages)

last month I changed all the AAC from 12pm to Noon times, every time they're changed back to 12pm. Thats why I reverted the Temple schedule but understand. I'll go ahead and change the rest back from 12pm to Noon, but there's a big chance someone would revert, if Noon is the preferred time, wish there was someone on the schedule template or somewhere else saying that. cause people change them back on the time when they're changed to Noon from 12pm. Bearcats_fan (talk) 18:56 UTC, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Bearcats fan, I have no personal preference, but I think it's smart to stick to the manual of style when we can. I didn't realize these changes were getting reverted; do you have any ideas as to how we can keep people from reverting, apart from putting editor notes on every schedule template and hope they're being read? Hi – the 2020 Sun Bowl was officially cancelled today. Could you possible db-author that page? As I believe we should delete it, since you are the original author, that's the quickest path. Thanks. Dmoore5556 (talk) 00:21, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello PCN02WPS,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.
