Reliability of old sources for historical events

Hi regentspark, and I hope all is well! I'm somewhat curious why you removed two sources at Battle of Trichinopoly (1682) here with the comments not a valid source (more than 100 years old). Please use modern academic sources for historical events and not a valid source (the person lived in the 16th/17th century). Please use modern academic sources for historical events. I'm a little confused about this; I've never seen old academic sources rejected as unreliable; in fact my experience has been that they are considered better than nothing. Modern sources are, obviously, preferable, but is there a policy that says old ones are unacceptable? The only policy I'm aware of is WP:RS AGE, which would seem to contradict your statements: "With regard to historical events, older reports (closer to the event, but not too close such that they are prone to the errors of breaking news) tend to have the most detail, and are less likely to have errors introduced by repeated copying and summarizing. However, newer secondary and tertiary sources may have done a better job of collecting more reports from primary sources and resolving conflicts, applying modern knowledge to correctly explain things that older sources could not have, or remaining free of bias that might affect sources written while any conflicts described were still active or strongly felt." My understanding is that older sources are fine as long as there's no reason to doubt their reliability and if there aren't newer ones that supersede those. I don't feel particularly strongly about this, just wondering if I'm missing something. Best, Eddie891 Talk Work 20:21, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Eddie891. While you are correct that we don't need to use only modern sources, any article that only uses old sources is suspect. This is specially the case for subcontinental sources because most older "histories" were written by lay people not historians. In this particular case, there are other issues as well. The first source (Joseph Bertrand) is a travel account (written in 1854) by a missionary and not a history. The second one, and I honestly have no idea if it actually exists, is apparently written by one of the kings involved in this battle which makes its objectivity highly dubious. It is unfortunate that the other sources in that article are all in a language other than English and that makes the material impossible to verify. --regentspark (comment) 23:41, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
Makes sense and thanks for getting back to me. Best wishes, Eddie891 Talk Work 11:56, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Why you delete my edit (adding Hanuman Chalisa in odia language). I just add a new local odia language Hanuman Chalisa in the page. Subhrajit Mohanty (talk) 05:08, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

@GTAVCV20022013: This is the English Wikipedia and there is no point in adding large pieces of text in any other language. You will need to explain why the odia language text is essential inclusion in the article. --regentspark (comment) 12:05, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

I add the chalisa in odia, because the people who knows odia language, can read it in their language for better understanding of the chalisa in odia and also they can chant it in odia without any problem. Subhrajit Mohanty (talk) 14:12, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

That's not a good reason. With that logic, we would have to add it in every language which would not make sense. Perhaps you should be doing this on the odia wiki? See odia language wikipedia. --regentspark (comment) 14:34, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
Also, note that there is a link to the odia language wiki page on the topic in the left bar. Odia speakers (readers?) can click on it and get information in Odia there. --regentspark (comment) 15:29, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Hanuman Chalisa

Hello RegentsPark, May I know why you have deleted my Citation for Hanuman Chalisa? And why you also issued a "Warning" for this?

I just wanted to help community... Let me tell you, I've added Full Hanuman Chalisa Lyrics (English & Hindi both languages) reference, which is composed by Late Gulshan Kumar & Hariharan. And I've added Citation of Lyrics website for that.

So, can you please tell me why it is considered as spammy? And if it is, please let me know the correct way for that.

And yes, in my last contribution, I've added a New single song by Artist & linked it's Official YouTube Video link, and I've received warning & my edit was deleted by some wiki Robot (i think)!

I just want to tell you, my intensions are pure.

Thanks. Ajendra25 (talk) 22:38, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

@Ajendra25: Youtube video links are not considered kosher. Also the other link that you gave is not an acceptable external link. You should check WP:EL for what is acceptable. You may, of course, add references to songs but don't link to youtube or some other site. And do provide a reference (see WP:RS to get an idea of what constitutes a reference). Sorry, but that's the wikipedia way! --regentspark (comment) 00:57, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Let me tell you, there was already a YouTube official link above my edit for the Akhil Sachdeva Singles song. And I've seen many YouTube links and other web citations used for reference. So why just only me? Not allowed to do so? I've checked some policies. Ajendra25 (talk) 14:33, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

It's my humble request, please remove a warning generated by you, as I think it's not a spam. Ajendra25 (talk) 14:36, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

I removed the other youtube link as well. I'm sure you're editing in good faith but please be careful with external links. Generally, you should only add links to outside sources that are either serving as reliable sources or are elaborating on material in the article. And, never inline an external link in the body of the article. --regentspark (comment) 14:43, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I cant spell so excuse Ghandi. Anyway, I just wanted to say I'm sorry for our disagreement lol, I posted evidence on the talk page of the Mhatma Gandi article. Have a nice afternoon (in Britain)

No worries. Thanks for posting on the talk page. Ghandi, as a spelling, is considered derogatory for Gandhi, that's why I pointed it out. --regentspark (comment) 14:37, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

‎Removal of sourced content

Dear RegentsPark, being a neutral editor, I invite you to kindly check out the recent contributions by Kami2018, who was already given "last warning" on his talk page twice for removing sourced content from various articles. He is currently removing refs and reliably sourced content from articles related to the Khalji dynasty. For example, see these edits: [1], [2], [3], [4]. In his edit summary, he claimed that the source was "not credible" (?), although historian Vladimir Minorsky, who is cited, is in fact one of the most trusted academics on the subject. Thanks, Khestwol (talk) 10:41, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

This reminds me of someone. @Arjayay: might have ideas. --regentspark (comment) 13:55, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

June, 2020

Hello! You say Mahabharata is not reliable for Mahabharata's character. I wonder why? All secondary modern adaptions will tell you different stories. Most adaptions write rewrite the epic in their own way and also they created several fictional characters. For example Kavita Kane's Karna's wife is a fictional story. There are several books are like that. Aren't original sources most reliable? Ratan375 (talk) 05:26, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

@Ratan375: Unfortunately, there is no original source. What you're dealing with is multiple, differing, translations (multiple, differing) of multiple, differeing versions of a text that was written (told, retold) eons ago. All we can go with is scholarly interpretations of what the texts say. --regentspark (comment) 11:58, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello

Glad you noticed, please take a look at this article – Zhao Yunlei, it's subsections really are not same like other badminton Articles in which they can be closed or opened as for ease in reading the whole Article. Maybe it is difficult only for us Mobile viewers, but can it be solved? I failed to figure out if there is a template or something which is preventing to close subsections in that Article. Thankyou. Regents for example this page, Gao Ling. We can easily close/open Subsections for ease in reading the article. But in Zhao Yunlei, it is different. Zoglophie (talk) 13:56, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Okay. I have a busy morning but will take a look this afternoon. --regentspark (comment) 13:58, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
I don't see any differences between the two articles. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by close/open subsections. This sounds like a technical issue of some sort and, perhaps, you should seek help at WP:VPT. Sorry I can't be of help! --regentspark (comment) 20:43, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Patrisse Cullors reverted

Why was this reverted? In a 2015 interview, Patrisse Cullors said her and BLM co-founder Alicia Garza "have an "ideological frame"..."we are trained Marxist".[1]

I would rephrase it if I were you. What, for example, does "ideological frame" mean? You need to write material that is clear and understandable. --regentspark (comment) 23:18, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Re: 'Minor' Edit article

Hi regentspark! Appreciate your talk page notification about the specific criteria for 'minor' edit. I was mistaken in my initial assumption. Regarding the sourcing for the sentence I added on the Kamma article, it is already given in the content that follows after when the caste affiliation of the Nayak groups is mentioned explicitly in the sources. Added this sentence to act as a 'connector' to the rest of the content on the Vijayanagara part. By LovSLif (talk) 00:12, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Yadav-related PhD thesis - Michelutti

Hi, you queried recently the massive use of a Lucia Michelutti PhD thesis in Yadav-related articles. The thesis is easily accessible, which probably goes some way to explaining its use, but I said that I thought there was a subsequent book. I've found it now but there is no way I can afford a copy and I doubt I'll be able to get it anywhere locally (we have virtually no libraries near me nowadays, so even interlibrary loan is a pain). See Michelutti, Lucia (2008). The Vernacularisation of Democracy: Politics, Caste, and Religion in India. Routledge. ISBN 978-0-41546-732-2. - Sitush (talk) 10:09, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

I see that it is available in a covid closed library that I have access to. Hopefully, later this summer. Google provides limited access but very limited (3 Yadav pages out of 76). --regentspark (comment) 11:47, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
I think it has a lot more relevant pages if you search for articles where the thesis has been used, eg: Hindu Ghosi. - Sitush (talk) 11:49, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I have access to a digital version, but it's one of those horrid online access things that I can't download or share. Not keen on taking screenshots of 76 pages, but I'm happy to look up specific things, if you would like. Vanamonde (Talk) 15:02, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
I think it is one that needs to be read through. It is used for a lot of statements at quite a few articles & I am concerned about people missing the nuances in what is said - these are Yadav POV pushers we're dealing with, so they tend to be selective. - Sitush (talk) 16:53, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

The flag with the sun and the lion was used by the Mughals. I verified it from following sources

The flag of the Mughal empire is a rectangular green triangular banner with a lion in front of a sun, both motifs being gold. It is surrounded by red.

The first two carry the lion with the sun behind it. Lion (or "Babur" in Persian, the lingua franca of the empire) was also the name of the founder of the Empire, Zaheer-ud Deen Muhammad Babur.

The Lion and Sun is an old Persian emblem that was re-used by the Mughals that identify strongly with Persian culture.

The Mughal Empire had a number of imperial flags and standards. The principal imperial standard of the Mughals displayed a lion and sun. The Mughals traced their use of this flag back to Timur [19]. About the historical Persian flags, it can help us the Encyclopaedia Iranica website [20]. Both the Sun and Golden Lion are symbols of kingship and royalty

The principal imperial standard of the Mughals was known as the alam (Alam علم). It was primarily moss green.[1] It displayed a lion and sun (Shir-u-khurshid شیر و خورشید‎) facing the hoist of the flag. The Mughals traced their use of the alam back to Timur.[2]

Fictional Flag

What could have I done if somebody uploaded the flag image with that name. 500px

@Nemo 838: Wikipedia is a reliably sourced encyclopedia. If something is labeled "fictional flag", unless you can find reliable sources for that flag, you shouldn't add it to articles. Mughal flags are uniformly unreliable so please don't add any to articles. Note also that flag icons are discouraged by the WP:MOS. --regentspark (comment) 21:02, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

Got it I will restore it with the old flag

@Nemo 838: Don't restore or add any flags. They will be removed because none of them are reliably sourced.--regentspark (comment) 21:12, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

Ah'm strugglin'

Hi, I am struggling to understand someone at Talk:Kapu_(caste)#Shudra_status and they've also posted quite a bit on at User_talk:Sitush#Help. My heart is starting to sink: they are so patient and polite but I'm just not getting it and I feel bad that I might be letting them down. It is now quite a lot of reading but is there any chance of you taking a look, please. - Sitush (talk) 17:34, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

This caste stuff makes no sense to me at all but this source appears to clearly say that the kapu's are a "heterogeneous Shudra peasant caste". The discussion you point to is very confusing and it is hard to figure out what the ed is trying to say, but this particular source does seem reliable. The writer appears to be a well established social scientist who specializes in Indian social communities (publication list). Can't ask for more than that.--regentspark (comment) 18:49, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
To be clear, I'm saying "Shudra caste" is reliably sourced and should be included (ceteris paribus!) --regentspark (comment) 18:51, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
Yes, thanks. I agree that the shudra thing has to be mentioned because reliable sources do so. It's just that I think I am missing something that they are trying to explain. No worries, I will have a think to see if I can drag another name out of the hat - the pool of people with some experience of this caste malarkey and Wikipedia is pretty small. I appreciate you taking a look - it's so rare to have someone like Rimeg engaging with politeness and patience that I feel I am failing them. See, I am human, after all :) - Sitush (talk) 19:29, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
I read the discussion again (a cup of tea helps!) and I think Kautilya is right. The editor is trying to differentiate between a Kapu caste and a Kapu tribe, and wants this differentiation to be included in the article. There is probably no such thing as a Kapu tribe and I don't think you're missing anything. --regentspark (comment) 19:42, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Your prejudice behavior to scientific evidence (Vandalism)

Hi,

Since you and some people (possibly) working in your team are removing the scientific evidence and heavily referenced sections of Surya Siddhanta. I came to your page and see how everyone has been blaming you to be prejudice and unscientific.

I will give you a chance regardless to explain yourself.

Wikipedia is a neutral source of Information. Do you disagree?

Wikipedia is supposed to contain all point of views by several scholars. Do you disagree?

My edits are heavily referenced. Scientific experimental work done by several researchers such as Nilesh Oak, Sudarshan Bhardwaj, Rupa Bhaty, ANila Narayanan have presented their experimental works and published them.

You cannot remove a scholarly consensus on the dating of Surya Siddhanta which is purely experimental analysis and Empirical evidence published by several researchsers.

@RahulChawla1990: You really should take this to the article talk page. I have no idea if what you are including is good stuff or bad stuff but, if you don't learn to build consensus, you're not going to survive on Wikipedia. --regentspark (comment) 02:06, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
Actually, I see you have posted on the article talk page so that's good. Though, briefer, more pointed posts may have been a better idea. Good luck. --regentspark (comment) 02:08, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

@RegentsPark - You removal of my edits are based on no references not refutals. You page is filled with wikipedians blaming you for prejudice and hate against ancient Indian Antiquity. Which you just showed by removing my edits based on NO scientific references. I had provided several references and consensus among several modern day researchers about the BC era dating of Surya Siddhanta. none your other editors who had been removing dating of Surya Siddhanta for a decade now have provided a response to my messages. Rather they were contacting each other to group up and delete the BC era dating sections and references.--RahulChawla1990 (talk) 02:22, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

@RahulChawla1990:I reverted you because you were not discussing anything on the talk page and this has nothing to do with the content of your edits (which, for all I know, may be perfect). I'm giving you some good advice, which it is up to you to take or ignore. Work collaboratively - otherwise you're not going to survive here. --regentspark (comment) 12:22, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

LovSLif

Any thoughts on User_talk:LovSLif#Kamma? I don't understand this stuff. If the sources (Choudhary, Harrison) are reasonable, you could just include both views? --regentspark (comment) 12:31, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
That's what I would have thought. No worries, I will sort it out one way or another (or both!) - just got a real life deadline approaching fast because some idiot has left things to the last minute and now needs a full company health & safety policy by Monday. Regarding removing my information

Why my information is removed. Stating poor sources??? That were the official letters written by tipoo to zaman shah. Should we ignore that. I have given the reference of official documents and the letters of tipoo sultan. Sorry this is not at all clarified. The records of sringeri dharmasthan by ak shashtry is also not a valid reference. Only the reference given by Mohibul Hasan is valid?? Mohibul Hasan is not only the valid historian about tipu. The records of sringeri dharmasthan is the contemporary evidence about peshwas. Why you removed it?? Why it is needed to show this much secular to religious fanatic like tipu. I have given contemporary evidences you should not remove that. Gajanan Bhaskar Mehendale is a great historian you should read his book. He has done a good research about Tipu's tyrant policies. Mahusha (talk) 14:20, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

@Mahusha:Quoting Tipu's letters is meaningless because that would be WP:OR. You should read up on WP:RS to see what constitutes a reliable source. Esamskriti is not reliable. --regentspark (comment) 14:51, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

What's the problem with records of sringeri math by ak shashtry

What is the problem with records of sringeri dharmasthan by ak shashtry. It is contemporary evidence. I have seen that who ever write against tipu in his article with contemporary evidences, it is removed. Is there any political mindset behind it to show tipu a hero. Mahusha (talk) 14:22, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Could you please take all this to the article talk page? That's where you need to discuss this. --regentspark (comment) 14:52, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Prejudiced against Indian history and trying to undermine age of ancient Indian cities

Reagents Prak, you have contributed to erroneous dating of Varanasi and omission of Dwarka from the list continuously inhabited cities (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oldest_continuously_inhabited_cities). I tried to cite reliable references but you seem prejudiced and are hell-bent on undermining Indian history.

Based on references that are as reliable as the references that were previously cited, the age of Varanasi is at least 1500-2000 BC https://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/bhu-team-unearths-4000-yr-old-crafts-village-in-varanasi-120022300355_1.

Also, the citations for Dwarka are not new original research. They have been published in peer-review journals over a decade ago. Here are the refs - Structure (rubble Wall) from 1500 BC (published in Marine Archaeology) - http://drs.nio.org/drs/bitstream/handle/2264/3085/J_Mar?sequence=2 Proof of active Indo-ROman trade in 400-500 AD (published in International journal of Nautical Archaeology - https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1095-9270.2005.00080.x

If you were specifically saying that Dwarka and Dwarka port (Bet Dwarka) are different places then you should have listed Bet Dwarka (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bet_Dwarka) in the list. But unfortunately you did not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spratap123 (talkcontribs) 21:00, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

@Spratap123: You need to find a source that explicitly confirms that Dwarka is a city that has been continuously inhabited for a couple of millenia. Merely including sources that say "a wall was found" is not enough. Regardless of all this, take this to the article talk page, that's the appropriate place for discussing this. --regentspark (comment) 21:14, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

White washing of Islam and Scapegoating of Hindus

I've noticed a lot of wikipedia entries that denigrate Hindu culture and practices at the expense of whitewashing Islam. Whenever people talk about the caste system among south asian muslims, they act as if the phenomenon is a south asian problem rather than an islamic problem. This is totally nonsensical since even outside of South Asia, there exists an atrocious system of social stratification where Arabs discriminate against non-Arabs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krao212 (talkcontribs) 16:43, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

Need a help regarding article Allahabad

Hello Administrator! Hi. I would like to bring to your kind notice that a certain user named Kashmiri, has made edits to page Prayagraj that appears to be affecting the whole neutrality of the article. I do not intend to name any user in particular, I just need to bring to light some particular edits, done consequently one after one, that has changed some of the long standing status of the page. Firstly, the user removed the metropolis status off the page stating that it isn’t really a metropolis, without providing any reference to the edit made, while the Census commission states those cities which are in prominence, centred, administrative headquarters which have a population more than one million, are referred as Metropolis, and the population is already referenced. I have no intention to get involved in any conflicts with any user. I know and understand that he might have done that in good faith, I just would like you to only revert back the metropolis status of the page since the population of the city is exceeding one million, and it is a city of importance, I do not ask you or intend to add anything, I just want neutral data to be restored back. I even provided Government link for the city given on the Government Urban and Environmental Studies website about the stats of the city. Under Chapter 2, City profile, section 2.3.1 it clearly says ” Allahabad city comes under Allahabad metropolitan area along with Cantonment board and urban outgrowths. Population of metropolitan area is 12,16,719. Male constitutes 655,734 and female constitutes 560,985 of the total population.” http://mohua.gov.in/upload/uploadfiles/files/19UP_Allahabad_sfcp-min.pdf The user Kashmiri hasn’t participated in any talks on talk page, nor has provided any significant reference on why the edit that was long stable was suddenly removed from the page. Alongside, I also provided a media article link back in 2006 when Allahabad was mentioned along with 5 other cities in the states and given metropolitan status. https://m.timesofindia.com/city/lucknow/Six-cities-to-get-metropolitan-status/articleshow/2210886.cms We editors look up to you for everything. Kindly help. Harshv7777 (talk) 06:56, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

@Harshv7777: I see it is being discussed at Talk:Allahabad. Hopefully, you'll get some resolution.--RegentsPark (comment) 15:29, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

As I see it there are two issues:
  1. Is the IP editor a sockpuppet - that was dealt with at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Khadim ahlesunnah waljamaah.
  2. Whether the GA review should go ahead. The IP editor thinks it should. Four other editors have reverted: a clear consensus not to review.

Blatant hoax

Raghu Pati Raghav says that the hymn is an excerpt from Nama Ramayanam, which is surely inaccurate because the Nama Ramayanam does not contain that text. Cited sources appear to be WP:SELFPUB. This appears to be blatant hoax. Can you help correct the article and remove the "Original Version" section under the WP:INACCURATE criteria? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thewicketkeeper (talkcontribs) 22:41, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

I'm sorry but I know nothing about this and can't help. I suggest you open a discussion on the talk page and see if someone responds. You can always remove content from an article - if no one reverts you, then you'll be fine. If you're reverted, then use the talk page to explain why your content removal was warranted. --RegentsPark (comment) 01:01, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

Talpade

My edits have been removed although they are from a valid source. Can you elaborate why the book reference I have provided is not a reliable source? ga11 (talk) 00:31, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

@Gauri a11: Booksfact is not a reliable source. Please try to find a scholarly historical source instead. --RegentsPark (comment) 15:59, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
@RegentsPark: I think there is some confusion. I have already removed booksfact a few days back. That was not the only source I had mentioned in the first place. The source I am referring to is a book. Kindly refer to my edit again for book details. ga11 (talk) 17:15, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
@RegentsPark: The heading of that section makes no sense in an English article since the heading is a Sanskrit proper noun. That's why I edited it.
@Gauri a11: Try discussing it on the article talk page. It seems to me that this is unverified, perhaps unverifiable, so you should try to find sources from aviation history. --RegentsPark (comment) 18:56, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
I see that the sources you're using are self-published and that you've been warned before. Please be careful. --RegentsPark (comment) 19:13, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Is there a rule on Wikipedia that if an author also runs a publishing house, then any books written by him are considered unreliable sources? If so, can you point me to such a rule? ga11 (talk) 19:41, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

WP:SELFPUB--RegentsPark (comment) 19:44, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
Can you tell me why you have changed the heading to Marutsakha again? I already explained several times that this is a proper Sanskrit noun and makes no sense as a standalone heading. It needs to have some English explanation with it like Aircraft or airplane or something. The fact that Talpade built an aircraft is not under dispute. What is under dispute is did it fly and for how long, etc. ga11 (talk) 20:04, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
Take it to the article talk page please. This is better discussed there. --RegentsPark (comment) 20:07, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

Deletion of Details on Narendra Modi

RegentsPark I first let you know that I have wrote article on him with full information and reliable citations describing his role in 2019 Indian General Elections. Please don't delete any article like this and it has been done to remove the template.Rajanrao Shankar (talk) 15:21, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

@Rajanrao Shankar: Not a comment on your sources or content. But, the article is about Modi and the level of detail you provide is better suited to the article on the elections. --RegentsPark (comment) 15:27, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

I didn't delete the whole article. Anyway, feel free to try inserting your content again. I doubt if it will last. --RegentsPark (comment) 15:43, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
I've removed it again. It really is far too much detail for a biography about Modi; if it's appropriate anywhere it would be in the respective election campaign articles, but I suspect it's included there already. Vanamonde (Talk) 17:23, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

What is wrong with the Koppen map I added? Most country articles have them. I don't see why you removed it. I-82-I | TALK 00:13, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

It sticks out oddly on the page and there is no explanation as to why it is there. --RegentsPark (comment) 00:15, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
But why did you need to warn me over it? Such a minor quibble doesn't seem to elicit one. I-82-I | TALK 00:22, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
I didn't warn you. Just pointed out that you should be careful when marking edits as minor. The minor edit checkbox should not be used when you're adding content but only for innocuous edits such as "typographical corrections, corrections of minor formatting errors, and reversion of obvious vandalism". Though formatted as a warning it is really, more of an FYI. (See WP:ME) --RegentsPark (comment) 00:26, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Unfair activities going on

The article https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_West_Bengal. There was a new section, "Tamang selo". it’s not a part of music of Bengal. So I haved deleted it after an information. Please have a look.... Wikifulness (talk) 15:22, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

But I could not erase the name tamang selo from the infobox. Take steps. Wikifulness (talk) 15:23, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

@Wikifulness: I see you've left a note on the article talk page. Hopefully, that will get some eyes on the article and clear up whether or not that music belongs on that page. --RegentsPark (comment) 15:40, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Sir, do one thing, it is clear that it is not from Bengal, it’s from Nepal. So, erase it from infobox. I am not able to do it. Please.... Wikifulness (talk) 17:09, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

It looks like the genre is in a template of Indian Music that is at the top of the page. I.e., the template refers to all genres of Indian music, not just the ones associated with West Bengal. Notice that it includes other Indian music not associated with Bengal (Bhangra, for example). --RegentsPark (comment) 17:50, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

It’s completely new. Somehow I have erased it. Thanks...Wikifulness (talk) 18:09, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

As long as you understand that you've removed it from all articles that talk about the music of India! Anyway, someone else will figure out whether this was appropriate or not. --RegentsPark (comment) 18:11, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

The short summary is that Wikipedia is a "reliably sourced" encyclopedia. It is not enough that you know something to be true, you need to provide a reliable source for anything you add. For history related material, that usually means an academic peer reviewed source. So, when you want to add content, look for a source first. Also, you should sign your posts on talk pages. Add four tildes (~~~~) or click the signature button at the top of the edit box (see WP:SIGNATURE). Best wishes. --RegentsPark (comment) 16:42, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

Shivaji

Hi, saw that you reverted my edit on Shivaji. I would request you to see the source again as it says the same on VERY first page. Can you tell me how is it not a reliable source? I have followed everything on WP:HISTRW. Jenos450 (talk) 19:47, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Jenos450:. Couple of points. First, the book does not say that this is a popular name of the person. All it does is use the title in a paragraph, which is only to be expected since, apparently, both Chhatrapati as well as Maharaj signify a king. Second, the source is a book apparently published by a political party. You need to show that the author is a historian of repute. Regardless, even if you did, the book merely uses the term and does not say that this is how he is popularly known. (P.S., as a general rule, you should post these sort of questions on the article talk page). Best. --RegentsPark (comment) 20:14, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
