I noted your comment while reading Jimbo's talk page. Requiring crediting in captions is not new; the Associated Press granted permission to use iconic images like Image:TrangBang.jpg on the stipulation that the photographer was credited where ever it was used. I believe that CC-BY gives the creator the right to specify how the image should be attributed, and if he wants to make sure that it is in each caption, I don't see a problem. But don't trust me. Get a second opinion on someone who knows the Creative Commons language better than me. Hbdragon88 23:54, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Both the GFDL and the CC-By-SA require attribution which is consistent and appropriate for the medium (go look up the exact text yourself, it's easy enough to find). A practice of inline crediting some of our images would potentially make use arguably out of conformance on all the rest. I'm sure some people will be delighted to see their chosen name over hundreds of pages, but I'm not looking forward to all the images we'll need to throw out because they were authored by folks with 'names' like "throbbing monster cock". :( --Gmaxwell 07:41, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Who would do that, anyway? On Wikipedia, that would get an indefinite block due to inappropriate username, and Flickr looks pretty closeknit - that is, people take their stuff seriously and wouldn't register a joke name like that. They share their own real pictures, and pick beign usernames or real names. I personally dislike such attribution because the image description page IMO tells me enough (if there wasn't a description page, I would certainly ask for in-line citations). Of course, when the AP is talking, we bow down. I guess if yielding to in-line citing will give us loads of great pictures, I'm all in. Hbdragon88 10:29, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Map Question

I was wondering, there is a map that seems to be used for all Illinois cities, example:

I am guessing this is a fair use map that can be altered for other cities? Moving the dot from one part of the map to another. If so, I have already done that, but would I be able to upload them and use them? So what type of Licensing would I then have to choose? Got another question along these same lines, I want to create this Category:Townships in Illinois, similar to how other states have it like this Category:Townships in Michigan. I was told that a rambot created all those townships. So I was wondering, how do we get a rambot to do this for Illinois? I asked on the Illinois Project, but that person doesn't seem to know. Marvel Ultimate Alliance Wiki

Hi Rey, I'm one of the site admins at Marvelmods.com. I went through your profile and admire all your hard work towards the Wiki project. I see you deleted the marvelmods.com link from the MUA wiki. I could understand the deletion of the URL beneath it which was just a popularity contest/voting questionnaire but Marvel Mods provides fans of the game modifications to be used for the PC version. The fan base for the Marvel Universe is huge and these modifications to the game cater to this crowd. This site was built by several modders in the community and is purely for the people, and does not generate revenue in any way.

What are your views on this? I can understand your concern about site promotion but this URL just leads to more information regarding the game, as well as getting more enjoyment out of it. Regarding marvelmods.com, it is a very new site. It has a very low Alexa ranking (currently 6,151,261), has a very small forum userbase (69 right now, note that you say the fan base is huge, so this 69 forum members make it look like it is not important for those fans), it has 2 pieces of news, and was registered, according to whois, on December 3, 2006. Give it 6-8 months, grow the site, get members and push it forwards, and then maybe it could be accepted as external link. Right now, unless it is an official site, one month old sites are just not appropriate external links. -- ReyBrujo 18:14, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Officiousness

I don't have time to go through each image tagging it. I listed them where someone who spends time on copyvios would see them. Most of them are actually listed as being copyrighted by the artist but with no licence. They are fairly blatant copyvios. IP block

Link deletions

Why are some review links deleted, while others are allowed to stay? For instance, on the Dead of Alive Xtreme 2 page, you deleted the review link to gatewalker.com, but you left the review links to Metacritic.com and GameBrink. gatewalker.com is not notable enough compared with metacritic.com or gamebrink.com. Alexa ranking for gatewalker is over 5m, while gamebrink has a ranking of around 25,000, and metacritic, 4,000. -- ReyBrujo 15:07, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

So in this case, the content of the linked page is not relevant. The major corporate sites may be allowed to have their opinions linked to, but smaller independent sites must fall by the wayside until they to manage securing funding to increase their search rankings to compete. You make it sound like it is a mere popularity contest. Sounds fair enough, especially considering what is generally advertised as the Spirit of Wikipedia, the desire to let everyone contribute. Thank you for that clearing that up. Too bad I can't cancel my donation. I guess I'll just have that postcard they mail out returned to sender.
Ok, in the case of a game article where there isn't any reviews by the big boys listed, can links a smaller site be listed? That DOAX2 link was up for a long time before you axed it.
By the way, this user has contributed to many gaming articles. Mainly fixing stuff on on 8-bit and 16-bit game entries (no user name yet, desired name was taken - might address that soon though). Obviously since this an encyclopedia, opinionated review type material should never be posted in the body of the article. I see no problem in providing a link to such an article though. Especially an obscured link at the very end of the page.

Feel free to request Wikimedia a refund of your donation because you were not able to "buy" yourself a link to your site. For the matter on topic, unluckily it has been accepted that determined sites, usually those that have articles in Wikipedia like IGN, GameSpot, GameSpy, Gamasutra, and even Joystiq and Kotaku, are considered good sites to link at. As you can imagine, there are millions of "smaller independant sites", and while Wikipedia offers "free information", we do not have the obligation of offering free advertising. Ideally, external links should be added to a link repository like the Open Directory, not here. Or, if that is not possible, linking to a meta site (a site that holds links to others, like GameRankings, RottenTomatoes or Metacritic). However, we do accept a small amount for reader's convenience. In the case of DAX2, I have removed the review to GameBrink as it can be found through the meta site. I have a few suggestions:
  • If the article already has external links, discuss in its talk page to see if your link can be accepted
  • If you want to add a link to many articles, discuss first in the WikiProject Computer and video games, otherwise it will be treated as spam.
  • New and very small sites, unfortunately, are not accepted. As I said, there are well over millions of these small sites, and allowing one would enforce all of them to try to be put here.
  • Try adding your link to an Open Directory category. In example, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 at Curlie is a good place. I am adding this Dmoz link to the article, new external links should be put there instead of Wikipedia to prevent spamming.

I realize that a such donation doesn't "buy" anyone anything. Skeletor editing He-Man instances and Wiki Nazis aside, I find that Wikipedia is a helpful independent institution and deserves what support it gets, I'd hate to see it become another node in a C-Net type organization (poor TV Tome), the blatant preferential treatment that some get is somewhat discouraging though. Daniel Terdiman

In order to reduce the clutter of footnotes in the first paragraph, we created a section which displays links and references regarding the subject's works. We have one note from the text to a comment referring readers to that section. This was a compromise reached during an AfD process, where the inclusion of too many links to his work made the other references to article about the subject more difficult to recognize and evaluate, and it was distracting from the content of the first paragraph. Clearly this is a compromise between standard style and practicality, but I think that it works in this case.

Cumberland, Maryland

I have revisied the changes you made to the Cumberland, Maryland page as all those pictures and links were painstakingly found and added. The links are not abuse, but are many of the websites that serve the Cumberland/Frostburg area. If you would like to change the headers of the sections, that is fine, but the links and the many pictures were added by many people, along with the many sections on Cumberland Industries and the history of the area have been discussed in the talk page and it was found that they are best left alone.

The relevant part of the author's answer is "It's ok with me" which I wouldn't necessarily translate in "I accept to permit the use of images according to CC-by-sa bla bla bla"...
The italian text in the ticket doesn't add anything except explaining who the person is and that the first email in the attachment is the last one the person sent authorizing the "Free Commons Licence" (?) on his work, probably meaning the "It's ok with me" part... As far as I'm concerned I would not accept a generic answer like that as an authorization. Cumberland, MD Radio/Utilities/Links

I am adding the website links back to the radio stations. It is up to par with other town lists and I don't think it violates any rules as the links are related to the information on the media chart itself. I would add them as links under the call letters, but that would block links to some of the Wiki articles. I made the links small (as you will see) so it just takes up small space and still available and not as visible. The media section itself, I copied the setup of the media section from the Minot, ND Wiki page as it was divided by form of media and it didn't have everything bunched together as it was before.

As for the utilities, ask Metros232, he wanted references there, so I added them, even though I think it was completely stupid. There were no links there previously, there are now.

I have let the large list of links go, I don't agree with it, but I have accepted it, but Metros232 made it very difficult to do anything to that page without getting in trouble. I will meet you on middle ground with any corrections....please, just let me know. I did take the "recreation" links down and left the "local heritage" links...there are only three of those. I added a section of the Maryland Department of Natural Resourses (DNR) links under "Area State Parks" since they are official state links...not sure if that is allowed, if not let me know and I will take that down as well.

Again, let me know how to help, I want to keep the page as close to as is, without violating any rules, and again am willing to work with you and meet you on middle ground so everyone is happy. Just to make sure we are on the same page....the radio ones have to go along with any others with I guess the exception of the town's main website and the county's main website? If so, I will work on making Wiki pages for the radio stations so the respective radio station links may be reside there instead of on the main Cumberland page. As for the links on the bottom of the page, I will leave that up to you, as I don't know what is OK and what is not.

Hey Rey, radio pages have been made, they are a little bare, but people can add to them. Links have been taken down from the radio section on the main Cumberland, Maryland page and added to the respective radio pages. Hopefully this works :o)

Actually, I'm attempting to get some help to find a suitable source to prove they are X-Ray, which is true. This is necessary for the article, as it is a very important plot point.

Finally, the game itself is considered a primary source, while Wikipedia prefers using secondary or tertiary sources to demonstrate points." The text itself did not appear in the game, it was in morse code. Actually, it is a major plot point, so I'm not sure what to do. It would probably just be easier to just delete it, but for the sake of wholeness there should be something in there... Secret (Ayumi Hamasaki album)

I'm sorry I converted the song titles to uppercase, I just did it because I have been looking Ayumi Hamasaki's album articles today and the titles that are originally uppercase on the album are uppercase in the articles as well. I just thought that if all the other albums have uppercase titles, someone did a mistake in Secret. Again, I'm sorry.

Image review request

I have another favor to ask. I would like to submit Civilian Public Service to FAC soon and first want to make sure the images are all in order. One graphic I created myself and should be no problem. Another is pre-1923 and should be no problem. The rest are all early 1940s, scanned from private collections, and were released under a free license by the owners. Julie McCullough

Hi again, Roberto. I'm having some trouble with the Julie McCullough article. I expanded it, but everything below the Growing Pains scandal section doesn't show up in the article, even though it shows up in the Edit window when you hit "Edit". In addition, all the text after the mention of 1st & Ten on the bottom is italicized, and that show is not, even though the formatting tags seen in the Edit window when I double-check appear to be in order? Album infobox error

Since you have been the only editor on this infobox for a little while, maybe you can fix this error I found. I found the error on the article April in Paris (album). See this version. While there was an absense of an Image for the cover art, the space was taken up by the text:

Could you investigate into why it would show that instead of the Nocover.png Image not displaying by default (as it did before)? I'm now concerned about the use of this image. I think we can keep it only if it's under the "Secret era" section of the Ayumi Hamasaki article, with the free use images (as a consideration) might be possibly used on the top area of the article. Hi, ReyBrujo - curious about this list? It's titled as "External links", but both Tourette syndrome and Sociological and cultural aspects of Tourette syndrome show up on the list, so the dump is actually pulling up well-referenced articles, rather than articles with excessive External links. Wondering what the purpose of the list is, and if you can delete the TS articles, as I've carefully controlled external links at FA Tourette syndrome ?? ReyBrujo, because of my involvement at both WP:FAC and WP:FAR, I recognize a lot of the articles in all 3 external links dump files. I have a good sense of a number of them that were just extensively referenced and have no external link farm (e.g.; Tuberculosis, DNA, Influenza, AC/DC, Superman) and I'll also know some that failed FAR or FAC because of external link farms. If you tell me what criteria you're using, and if you set up the column and indicate what you want, I can check the ones I'm familiar with before you send them on to the spam groups.
