Brittas[edit]

Please note that disambiguation pages like Brittas are meant to help readers find a specific existing article quickly and easily. For that reason, they have guidelines that are different from articles. From the Wikipedia:Disambiguation dos and don'ts you should:

  • Only list articles that readers might reasonably be looking for
  • Use short sentence fragment descriptions, with no punctuation at the end
  • Use exactly one navigable link ("blue link") in each entry that mentions the title being disambiguated
  • Only add a "red link" if used in existing articles, and include a "blue link" to an appropriate article
  • Do not pipe links (unless style requires it) – keep the full title of the article visible
  • Do not insert external links or references - Wikipedia is not a business directory

The basic idea is that disambiguation pages should provide one link per entry that (hopefully) takes the reader to the relevant Wikipedia article. Extra blue links and references just make the page hard to scan, so it's better to put them in the article (if it exists).

For each of your entries, I removed the extra blue links (which mostly didn't mention Brittas) and added a link that does (mostly a "List of townlands"). I commented out the references instead of deleting them; future editors may want to create a "List of" article. Articles have different guidelines and the references could be useful. If you wanted, you could add the references to the various list articles.

Thank you. Leschnei (talk) 14:06, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Leschnei, thanks for bringing that to my attention and explaining so clearly. The "List of townlands" is a better link choice, you're right. Ridiculopathy (talk) 15:33, 27 March 2022 (UTC).[reply]

Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Ridiculopathy! Your additions to Saggart have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. MoneytreesTalk🏝️CCI guide 17:47, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Moneytrees, and thanks for the thorough explanation.
So if I were to only copy/translate a small amount of the same newspaper sources I originally added, and paraphrase the text into my own words and structure (without following the source's words too closely) it would be ok? And I would not be able to take text from an engineering website such as 'https://www.byrnelooby.com/projects/saggart-reservoir-project' because the source material is not in the public domain? Would it be ok then? Were they the main problems? Regards, Ridiculopathy (talk) 17:57, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
1. You could do that, although I don't recommend it, as it could create problems with regards to close paraphrasing. My recommendation is to state what the source is saying in your own words in the most basic, straightforward way as a starting point for what you are writing.
2. Yes, you cannot take text from that website as it is not in public domain. There aren't many websites that are in the public domain, most of the ones that are are hosting very old books that have become public domain or are government affiliated websites. Most websites have something like "All Rights Reserved" at the bottom of every page (that means it's not ok to copy from), others have pages explaining their copyright. And a lot have no pages saying what their copyright is- in that case, assume the text there is copyrighted and cannot be used.
The main problem can just be boiled down to this: Just don't copy from sources. It's ok to quote them a bit, but otherwise don't copy from them. Unfortunately, copyright is an annoying and complex concept, so that can get lost in it all. I hope this answer is helpful. MoneytreesTalk🏝️CCI guide 18:17, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for explaining. I didn't know a lot of that and I'll keep it in mind when i'm adding things. Regards, Ridiculopathy (talk) 18:48, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for April 1[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Watt (novel), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Confinement. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:08, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

County Wicklow articles[edit]

I notice you are making several edits to County Wicklow articles but several of the people you added are unsourced, such as Justin Keating in Ballymore Eustace and Brian Fallon and Cora Venus Lunny in Ballymore Eustace. They should either be removed or properly sourced. The other thing I notice is that you use offline journal/books sources but do not always use a citation template. It's now favoured to use them instead of plain inline references. Try using some of those you will find here: WP:CIT#Examples. There also no need to add a "See also" link to articles that are already linked within the prose; generally they should only be linked once and that is normally the first instance per WP:OVERLINK. Cheers and thanks for improving these articles. ww2censor (talk) 15:01, 13 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ww2censor, and thanks for messaging. I'll remove the unsourced people now. I generally search for Wikipedia pages containing a town name and then include any people that come up from that search in the ==People== list for that town. I usually just copy the sources from the pages I find.
By the way, would you be able to put a disambiguation message at the top of the Kilbride, County Wicklow page, as there are at least 3 other Kilbrides in the county (2 townlands and 1 civil parish). See: Kilbride. I'd add one myself but I don't know how. The one that looks like this: "For other places named Kilbride, County Wicklow, see Kilbride (disambiguation)". Regards, Ridiculopathy (talk) 15:11, 13 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are better off to check the sources before adding as some may be out of date or have moved. I've added the hatnote you asked for but not Kilbride (disambiguation) which is a redirect to Kilbride. Keep on truckin' ww2censor (talk) 17:14, 13 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Overlinking[edit]

Please see WP:OVERLINK which explains that we do not link names of countries and common words. I have reverted your edit to Dervla Murphy where linking every country mentioned, and words like "author", drowned her in a sea of blue links. PamD 22:50, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note to say hopefully no hard feelings re Co. Kerry; your username is great and amusing, and you obviously have sound taste in musicdiff :). Ceoil (talk) 18:11, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ceoil, no hard feelings at all, I see more and more where you're coming from with it and thanks for the explanations given. P.s. I added a bit to the County Cavan page about the stereotype of Cavan people being frugal. I guess that's also in the same realm as the Kerry one but nobody has reverted it yet. Feel free to do so if you think it doesn't belong there. Tnx, Ridiculopathy (talk) 23:34, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good to hear. As a new editor you've probably figured out Wiki is a fairly punishing environment -epically for newbs- but if its any comfort all longer tooth editors have been there and learned via miss-steps. That said, I don't think the addition to the Cavan article is encyclopedic either, so if you could self revert that would be great. In better news, do hope you enjoy working here, and hope to see you around; feel free to hit me up on my talk if any queries, advice etc needed, and best. September 2022[edit]

Information icon Hello. Your recent edit to List of hoax commemorative plaques appears to have added the name of a non-notable entity to a list that normally includes only notable entries. In general, a person, organization or product added to a list should have a pre-existing article before being added to most lists. If you wish to create such an article, please first confirm that the subject qualifies for a separate, stand-alone article according to Wikipedia's notability guideline. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Elgin Park (album) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a musical recording which does not indicate why its subject is important or significant, and where the artist's article does not exist or is eligible for deletion itself. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for music.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. BusConnects[edit]

Hey. I've gone ahead and created that draft at: Draft:BusConnects. Feel free to add/update things. We can then move to the main article space, categorise and backlink. Following WP:SS it may be worth moving some of the detail in the Cork (city)#Bus section to the new article. Guliolopez (talk) 19:20, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, that is excellent work. Fair play! I think you've covered all the boxes there. I would imagine BusConnects is only something which is going to get bigger so it's great to have a dedicated page at this early(-ish) stage. As I find new things I'll add them in but i'd say the article is good to go. Thanks, Ridiculopathy (talk) 20:25, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Grand job. If you have no proposed changes to Draft:BusConnects, I'll likely shortly move it to the main article space. And start adding the backlinks/etc as needed. Guliolopez (talk) 16:03, 16 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Brittas Ponds[edit]

Hi! I see you made a link at Brittas for the pond(s), so I assume you have a plan for an article, and will not create a stub for now. One small thing - there are still the forms of two ponds, with slightly different characteristics, so perhaps Brittas Ponds rather than Brittas Pond? Have you access to "The Rivers of Dublin" (Sweeney, nice maps) and The Rivers and Streams of the Dublin Region" (Doyle, lists all the little streams) and Paddy Healy's works, as released by SDCC? I think all have something to add on this topic. SeoR (talk) 19:30, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @SeoR, thanks for messaging. Yeah, i'm writing up a page for it now. Logainm refers to it as Brittas Pond (singular), so I was going to go off that, but i'd like to get it right of course. Article names are impossible to change after the fact, aren't they? When you mention two ponds, do you mean the mostly dry swampy ground to the north of the main pond? I guess it was used as some sort of safety valve storage for flood water from the main pond? I don't have access to the sources you mentioned. Ridiculopathy (talk) 19:39, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @SeoR, I put the article in the draft section. Please feel free to add to it.
User:Ridiculopathy/Brittas Pond - Wikipedia
Ridiculopathy (talk) 21:20, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Names can be changed afterwards, but it is better to get them right from the start. There were two ponds for most of their history, and many authorities consider that both still exist in some form, albeit the northern one has turned into swamp rather than a true pond. I have some sources for this topic, incl. at least one of the books, so I will have a go at adding. SeoR (talk) 01:07, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great photos, and an update to the facts too, albeit we can't use it yet, due to WP:OR, in that the river channel has dried up. However did you gain access? I thought the Mansfield people, and the fishing club, kept it all locked up. SeoR (talk) 23:32, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, no it's been open since always. I wasn't aware of any signs saying no entry at least. Ridiculopathy (talk) 10:15, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, in these days of over-fencing. I like this sort of post-industrial site, must take a walk some day. You just walk in from Brittas crossroads? SeoR (talk) 13:56, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dublin pubs, Roy Bulson[edit]

Hi. I see you added citations to articles in January from Roy Bulson's book about bars in Dublin. I replaced your citation in the Mulligan's article with a standard Wikipedia book citation template. If you want to go back to the other articles (Dublin Airport and The Brazen Head) you can copy the template below and just insert the appropriate page number from Bulson to suit the article.

Thank you @Netherzone, however, with all due respect, when a Wikipedian puts direct quotes from a source "in brackets", it means they acknowledge that they are quoting from the original source directly and it is therefore not a problem what they post from it. Hi, and thank you for your note, and I do understand that it takes a while to learn how things work around here. I mean you no offense, but it should not be up to other editors to clean up your copyright violations. COPYVIOs are serious because it can cause legal issues for the encyclopedia. The text surrounding some of the quotes were also copied directly from the source, and rather than waste time picking through this I removed the copyright violations surrounding the short quotes that did not seem critically important. This content should have been drafted in your own words. Please read WP:COPYVIO and WP:CLOP for more information. Thanks again for your contributions, and hope to see you around! The Italian Quarter[edit]

I honestly don't think a 60-metre laneway can be described as a "quarter" in any real sense of the word, except tongue-in-cheek "marketerese", but you can't knock a fella for trying, I suppose. I think DCC gave up on the 'Grafton Quarter' thing after 2021, not sure though. Should we include info on the disputed ownership/"I'm only an advisor" of the restaurant & winebar from Mick Wallace, or is that too off-topic? BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 11:27, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Bastun no, please add all you can. I'm surprised it ever even gained traction as a place called "The Italian Quarter" at all, and if DCC did indeed give up on Grafton Quarter that is good news. As you can see though it seems this 'Quarter' thing seems to be only growing... Guinness Quarter etc. I would've thought a city could only have four quarters but there you go. Hello[edit]

Just took a quick look at the Last Supper page and didn't read a mention of MASH, although I may have missed it. There are sections for art, music, etc. but none for 'Film', so a new section seems appropriate. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 23:30, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Check out The Last Supper (disambiguation) as well, which has a large film section. I don't know how many of the films actually depict the last supper or how many just use it as a metaphor. A good topic for addition to the Last Supper page in any case. Randy Kryn (talk) 23:32, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Randy Kryn i personally think a link to M*A*S*H would be a lot more useful in that navbox than squirreled away in some article, but if you think it doesn't belong there I accept your judgement. What's the point in having a Template:Last Supper in art if it doesn't factor in all the references of the 'Last Supper'... in art? If it's just for 'visual art' then why is it not called Template:Last Supper in visual art Ridiculopathy (talk) 23:36, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Several reasons. 'Art' in Wikipedia language usually means visual art. The scene in the film is brief, so adding the entire film link on a navbox would not be defining the film but one scene. There are many categories, so say Category:Moon in art, if opened to film, would have untold entries which may only focus on one aspect of each film which are then covered in other areas. Your interest in bringing the MASH scene more coverage would be well covered on the Last Supper page, much more than on a navbox (navboxes are not viewed on mobile, for example). Personally, I knew a man who collected Last Supper artwork, and he had a room full of paintings, sculptures, etc. Randy Kryn (talk) 23:46, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean. I'm slowly learning this coded Wikipedia-speak (e.g. where "art" means purely "visual art". Wish they made it more explicit to people). In any case, thanks for explaining. Ridiculopathy (talk) 23:50, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Italian Quarter, Dublin[edit]

On 28 September 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Italian Quarter, Dublin, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that 13 contemporary Dubliners reenacted The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci for a mural installed in their city's "Italian Quarter"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Italian Quarter, Dublin. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Italian Quarter, Dublin), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed.
