Replaceable fair use File:Alan Clark 1984.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Alan Clark 1984.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Animalparty! (talk) 23:10, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Incremental service award ribbons

[edit]

Hi Robin,
This discussion decided back in 2015 that there was no need for incremental service ribbons for higher levels, and consensus was to remove them.
Please start a new discussion on Wikipedia talk:Service awards if you would like to include further incremental levels. - Vanstrat ((🗼)) 08:07, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Image without license

[edit]

Unspecified source/license for File:Lord Foster of Bishop Auckland.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Lord Foster of Bishop Auckland.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time after the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by MifterBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: Once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. --MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 23:47, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Template:Experienced lv2 Ribbon, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here.

Unspecified source/license for File:Frank Bewsick 1959.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Frank Bewsick 1959.jpg.

--MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 20:45, 1 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

An article you recently created, Armorial of Speakers of the British House of Commons, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Armorial of Speakers of the British House of Commons

[edit]

I share your frustration at the problem with sourcing heraldry. Unfortunately, this is compounded significantly by what seems to be a high level of administrative incompetence in the College of Arms, that is only slightly mitigated in the Lord Lyon. I can only assume the reason for that is due to the heralds being set for life, insofar as jobs go, and feeling no real need to run the place as anything other than their personal hobby. Since both the Canadian Heraldic Authority and the Chief Herald of Ireland don't have that problem, this seems to be an issue unique with English and Scottish heraldry rather than something inherent in the modern practice of heraldry. To the point you alluded to on the page, I'm pretty sure I could randomly choose any heraldic article on Wikipedia and successfully nominate it for deletion as they are all quite horribly sourced, absent just a small handful. I've tried to compose several articles on heraldry but never managed to find sufficiently quality sourcing to do anything more than these three stubs (the last of which is, itself, probably in danger of AfD): assumed arms, arms of assumption, Civic heraldry in the Czech Republic. Coat of arms mix-up?

[edit]

Hello.

The other day, you added coat of arms to the Baron Denman article. When I took a closer look, I discovered that there were two occurrences of DENHAM – as opposed to DENMAN – one of which was my own addition, which I now have corrected. The other one was the file name for the coat of arms image you added.

Now, as I see it, either the file was added to the wrong article, or the file has the wrong name.

Can you see another possibility?

Best regards,

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Sir George Wyatt Truscott, 1st Baronet, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Vanity Fair (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hello, Robin S. Taylor. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Government of Richard III of England".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. CptViraj (📧) 08:34, 26 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Lord Ahmed

[edit]

This peer is not a privy councillor. You can confirm that he is not entitled to the prefix "Right Honourable" by checking his correct title on the House of Lords website and comparing his title with the title of someone who is a privy councillor, such as Lord Kinnock, Lord Hague or 1001 others. Please don't revert this until you can point to a source giving his title as "Right Honourable". Ironman1104 16:54, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

Arms

[edit]

Assuming it is even correct (I think arms sometimes change from one generation to the next), please would you consider an alternative format for this edit. There is no need for a separate section, the terminology is gibberish to most people, and encompassing it inside a table is poor form. Just sticking an image in there with a caption seems better (again, assuming you are using the correct armourial). - Sitush (talk) 10:49, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, thinking more about this, are we even allowed to use the image? What is the situation regarding copyright and derivative works? Furthermore, what is the situation regarding original research, about which there is current a discussion here? I am going to remove your addition pending some clarification and will copy these comments over to the article talk page. - Sitush (talk) 11:03, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi could you help me please with this article as the Viscounts and Barons are the hardest to find there arms. Mr Hall of England (talk) 16:12, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The obvious sources are Burke's and Debrett's. At the bottom of their respective articles you can find links to many editions from the eighteenth century to the twentieth, which will show the arms associated with all of Britain's peerages and baronetcies. Not all of them have been illustrated for Wikimedia Commons, but I and others are steadily getting through them. Robin S. Taylor (talk) 21:46, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Barge of the Dead" Screenshot

[edit]

Hello. I hope you are having a great weekend so far. I just wanted to explain why I have twice removed the "Barge of the Dead" screenshot (File:VOY Barge of the Dead.jpg) from the article. On Wikipedia, it is strongly encouraged to only use non-free content to illustrate a point that cannot be fully understood through prose alone. A screenshot would be acceptable if it added to some sort of critical analysis or information about the episode's production, but the above screenshot does not show anything that is not already represented in the prose. Again, I just wanted to explain why I have twice removed the image. I do not think it adds anything to the article beyond aesthetics. Aoba47 (talk) 21:12, 13 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Harriet Harman | Mother of the House

[edit]

Hello,

I am the person who made the edit on Harriet Harman for it to say 'Mother of the House'. I don't understand why we should wait until she has served longer then ALL of the MPs. I thought a CHILD had a father AND mother, so why can't we say she is the Mother of the House if she has been officially dubbed it? Are you saying that Theresa May didn't dub her it even though it says on the news or are you just sexist? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amanofpolitics (talkcontribs) 15:58, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Mother/Father of the House is not a title in the gift of the prime minister. It is a designation for the member of the house with the longest continuous service. Harriet Harman is currently seventh in line. The House of Commons research paper on the subject [[1]] says "There has not, so far, been a 'Mother of the House'." and our general article on "Father of the House" shows that institutions with such a designation will have either a Father or a Mother depending on the sex of the longest serving member. They don't have both at the same time. In any case the choice of 13 June 2017 as the start date is nonsensical as Harman has been the senior woman in the Commons for a lot longer, and if you would apply such a title to her you would logically have to apply it retroactively to a great many other female MPs all the way back to the Viscountess Astor. William Russell (Lord Mayor)

[edit]

Robin

I saw the coat of arms you drew for Baron Russell of Killowen, whose descendant recently became Lord Mayor of London (for 2019–20).

Lord Mayor Russell's personal arms for his year of office are:

City (dexter) impaling Russell (sinister)

Please advise if you could use your evident heraldic artist skills to draw these arms?

Many thanks, Minotaur432

@Robin S. Taylor: resolved.
