Hey

I'm very sorry to see this. I hope you're okay. All the best, SarahSV (talk) 03:55, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

I can only echo what SlimV says. Hope you have a change of heart after taking some time out. Wikipedia will be a poorer place without you! Betty Logan (talk) 21:28, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
Don't want to be too much of a me-too, but sorry to see you go. Right back from our first encounters arguing over Bond films, it's been good to know you - albeit in digital form. Chaheel Riens (talk) 13:52, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

It's good to see you back. Everything alright? Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.5% of all FPs 16:53, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

Although there is no way to confirm this, SchroCat claims to have scrambled their Wikipedia password and thus cannot log in or reply to you. Presumably they also stopped reading their talk page. The reason they are "back" is because they requested WP:VANISH in the middle of an Arbcom discussion, said they scrambled their password and would never be back, and then edited as an IP. Some editors objected to this, so the account was unvanished. I suspect that this account will be re-vanished after the arbcom discussion closes. SchroCat is free to create a new account but would most likely be required to disclose who they are, unless they want to request WP:CLEANSTART and see if that gets approved. --Guy Macon (talk) 18:33, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
A clean start would be somewhat difficult, considering they attempted that twice before with User:The Bounder and User:UtterBuffoon and ended up getting checkuser-blocked.-- P-K3 (talk) 20:02, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
I wasn't aware of that. I personally have never really interacted with SchroCat, but some people seem to like them and are sad to see them go, which isn't a bad way to end things. Editing Wikipedia can be rewarding, but it can also be frustrating. I can't say I blame somebody for walking away. --Guy Macon (talk) 04:30, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
SchroCat, if you ever read this, then know I also will miss you and your contributions. Take care with whatever the future holds for you. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 02:50, 22 September 2020 (UTC)

Contrary to what Joe Roe seems to think, SchroCat and Cassianto are in as good a standing as Tim riley and Brian Boulton are when it comes to producing featured quality work on here. Two of the best editors on the site, sorry Joe. They've been an invaluable part of the FA process too and have put in a great deal of time reviewing the work of others, very well. In a Wikipedia where civility is more important than content, then they're not the best examples of ultra politeness but considering how many idiots/trolls they have encountered over the years, having little patience with them is understandable.† Encyclopædius 10:01, 22 September 2020 (UTC)

  • Schrocat the 'pedia is a lesser place without you. As I mentioned to Cass there are people all over the world who will benefit and learn from the many articles that you worked on over the years. Thank you for your efforts and best wishes to you and yours. MarnetteD|Talk 11:45, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

Query

I know you are not around but sort of a bit around ... I wish you were more around but hey, I'm not here to groan about stuff.

If I wanted to ask you about something that you wrote, will you see it here? Would you like it somewhere else? Or what? I feel a bit like I am trying very inexpertly to use some kind of a Wiki-Ouija Board, or something!

Disappointingly enough my enquiry is a simple usage question and very very far from exciting, so if you are not interested please feel free to say so and I shall simply stfu. Similarly if you don't respond I will take it as a No! Cheers DBaK (talk) 17:08, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Happy holidays!

Happy New Year!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, SchroCat!

The other day, I was having a conversation with someone about holiday cards and social media. It occurred to me that, in the years since I left Facebook, the site I use most to communicate with people I like isn't actually a social media site at all. If you're receiving this, it's pretty likely I've talked with you more recently than I have my distant relatives and college friends on FB, at very least, and we may have even collaborated on something useful. So here's a holiday "card", Wikipedia friend. :) Hope the next couple weeks bring some fun and/or rest. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:35, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

Hey SchroCat--happy new year! Listen, you know this kind of topic better than me: please pitch in if you can. It's a fascinating little subject--I wish I had more pictures, maps, etc. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 01:26, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi Drmies, - happy new year to you too! Good to hear from you. Sure, I'll have a look over it and a little dig round too. KJP1 and Dudley Miles, do you have anything in your libraries that could help expand the article? Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 11:37, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
Crazy name, crazy place! But not in Pevsner, I'm afraid. Though, as there's not a building in sight, that's unsurprising. I'll have a look to see if it's mentioned elsewhere. KJP1 (talk) 12:17, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
p.s. "The best known of the numerous mountain tarns are, Overwater, near Uldale; Tarn Wadling near High Hesket; Talkin Tarn, in Hayton parish; Martin Tarn, in Wigton parish; Burnmoor Tarn, between Sea and Screes fells; and Styhead Tarn, near Borrowdale. These all abound in trout and eels, some containing also perch and pike. Tarn Wadling affords plenty of fine carp. The larger lakes are visited in the winter by numerous flocks of wild ducks, geese, swans, and other fowl." From this, found here. KJP1 (talk) 12:35, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
Hi SchroCat. Good to hear from you. I am afraid it is outside my period, which finishes with the Norman Conquest. There are sources which look interesting on Google Scholar at [1]. Dudley Miles (talk) 12:52, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
KJP1 and Dudley Miles, Thank you both very much! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 12:57, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

Thank you both, KJP1 and SchroCat. (SchroCat, I gave you credit in the DYK nom: thanks for your help in writing the article.) Next question, for both of you, since I think this is even more up y'all's alley: Castle Hewen. And Hewin/Hewins. I find it constantly in the literature for this topic (for instance), and in one of my sources I found a mention that only Romano-British stuff was found, I guess as opposed to a real medieval castle. But I have little experience writing up castles, and your help is appreciated. I may start a stub, but I think finding the right sources is harder for me. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 21:18, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Thanks Drmies, that's very kind (even if I did very little!) There looks like there's a decent amount of stuff on Hewen - a good number of sources here suggest there's been some decent archaeological study there, which is always great for background/history sections. I'll have a dig round ('scuse the pun) to see what else is around. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 21:27, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
There's some good sources here, showing alternate spellings of Castle Hewen; Castle Luen; Castellewyn; Castlehewings; Castle Lewen. Scroll to the Sources of information, references and further reading and there's a decent list there. There's certainly enough reliable sources to justify an article on the topic - at first glance at least. - SchroCat (talk) 21:40, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
Again, its too early for Pevsner but, Gatehouse Gazetteer gives you something. KJP1 (talk) 21:44, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, Shro, you hit GG already. KJP1 (talk) 21:45, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
  • Drmies, there's some good stuff at this book on Tarn Wadling (or "Tarn Wadalyne") you may want to look over. - SchroCat (talk) 22:26, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
    • Thanks! In the meantime I got sidetracked by Crane Moss, reference to which I found in a geological article that showed up in that Google Scholar search. Look at this--can you maybe upload this, with all the proper paperwork? How old is that map? Thanks so much! Drmies (talk) 22:47, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
      • The map is from 1832 and Cobbett (who commissioned it) died in 1835, so we're entirely in the clear for a Commons upload. It's late here now, so I'll do that in the morning. There are several aerial shots I wish we could use, but all they really show is the vague outline - even if that is interesting to some of us! They are all copyrighted, unfortunately and there aren't any photos of the area I can find at the moment - but I'll keep looking. - SchroCat (talk) 23:06, 10 January 2023 (UTC) Add: Scratch that: it was nonsense. Map was published in c. 1910; there's no authorship included, so it's out of copyright. - SchroCat (talk) 09:18, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
        • In an article, I found a wonderful map of the area from the Ordnance Survey, 1895, but I can't seem to find it online; have you ever waded through this page? Maybe it's too late (here, now!) and my brain is tired. But if you know how to get that, that would be awesome. Thanks so much--this is really cool. It's so much more fun to work with someone, and you got skills that I seriously lack. Drmies (talk) 03:51, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
          • Hi Drmies, so you have anything more for the Folklore and literature section? SchroCat (talk) 09:08, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
            • Hey, I don't think so: I think I reached the bottom of the well. There's more on the Arthurian literature but the ones I already included are the most insightful for our purpose--other articles basically have it as a location and rely on the ones we have. Folklore is a slightly different matter and I plan to make one more run through JSTOR, but there can't be that much more. I had hoped Google Books would have delivered me a bit more from the antiquarians and I'll try that again (with the various spellings), but I think we're kind of done. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 16:12, 13 January 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Tarn Wadling

On 27 January 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tarn Wadling, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the now-drained lake Tarn Wadling was famous as a liminal place where the spectre of Guinevere's dead mother appeared to her and Gawain in The Awntyrs off Arthure? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tarn Wadling. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Tarn Wadling), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Congratulations, SchroCat! The article you nominated, Great Gold Robbery, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) via FACBot (talk) 00:05, 29 January 2023 (UTC)

Hey there. First off, welcome back - almost seems like the old days, though I do miss Cass, with whom I also had some very pleasant pints with in London back in the day. Second off re Joyce - that was a tactical defeat, but am happy with the end; those there seem to be debating additions (eg with the sig) in the manner hoped for, and the main person that wrote the article User:Wtfiv, a great researcher whom I highly respect, voted early for addition. Anyways, thirdly - I do have a favour to ask: if I was to put up Tomb of Philippe Pot for PR, could you please tear it to shreds. You seem rather skilled at this writing thing. Ceoil (talk) 12:10, 29 January 2023 (UTC)::;

(talk page stalker) Re. the Tomb article, I might not get to PR but a comment on the images for now: I'd suggest making the Phillipe Pot shot and the pleurant image beneath it the same size; also the last four images in the article sandwich the text pretty badly on my laptop, although I can't say how they appear to everybody of course. Perhaps put one or two of them in the gallery you have earlier in the article? Lastly do we know if the mourners inspired the masochistic monks in Monty Python & the Holy Grail? I'm afraid I can't look at them without thinking of that scene... ;-) Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 13:03, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Ian, good points and have cut for now one of the images at the end of the article. The remaining sources to incorporate are in French - hoping my mother and wife (both fluent) will verify the translation I'm working through (my French is ok-ish only since I left school...always more of a maths and balance sheet person), but the additional text, once verified will at least better balance the img to text ratio) Ceoil (talk) 13:17, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
Ceoil, Cheeers. I saw Cass just before Christmas - he's doing well, but snowed under with work. I keep trying to tempt him back, so who knows! No probs - happy to look in at the tomb - I'll be along shortly. If you've got some spare time, I've got Ken "Snakehips" Johnson at PR. Interesting story of someone who could have changed the music scene in Britain, except for the German bomb that killed him. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 13:28, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
Am absorbed by the Johnson article; its a pity Martinevans cant edit these days - this is totally up his street. Funny how you can have your ups and downs with people over the years but still be drawn to and miss them. Say hi to Cass, and thanks so much for the review, very much appreciated :) Ceoil (talk) 20:49, 29 January 2023 (UTC)

CCI

Thanks for pitching in! Just to be sure, on edits like this, that the {{y}} is what you intend. At CCI, the "yes" means you found copyvio. You would enter a {{n}} if you found no copyvio (they aren't really concerned with the OR, POV, etc, although I also note that so we have a complete record). And once you've processed a diff, you remove the diff (the idea being that we don't link to copyvios). Thanks for helping! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:34, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

And then, on ones like this, a question mark can be entered. If he gave no source, chances are he lifted the content from somewhere, so we have to presume it has copyvio even if we can't locate it, and treat it as such. Bst, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:36, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
See the instructions section at the main CCI page for how to use the various y/n/? templates ... I find the copyvio folks tend to use very dense language and it took me a long time to catch on. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:40, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Excellent - thanks very much for the guidance. I was trying to see what others did, and thought I'd cracked the code, but obviously not! - SchroCat (talk) 14:45, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
They are overworked, but ... I find none of the copyright page instructions make it easy to help ... yes, dumber than the average bear, but it's pretty dense ... SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:02, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

On ones like this, you can go ahead and apply WP:PDEL. It is only on GAs that we are asked to hold off (per the AN) until we know if someone intends to save the GA. The other difficulty in examining DC's edits is that he sometimes came back to add sources (sigh). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:24, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

  • Thanks for that. God, what a tiresome task: why do people bother doing something like that? It takes only a fraction more time and effort to reword something differently enough... - SchroCat (talk) 15:38, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Oh, the psychology there is very very interesting ... when you want to examine that, go back and read through all the older ANIs for Not A Good Time. The mess is huge, and it went undetected for 549 DYKs and 240 GAs (a few now delisted). The CCI situation is made much more complex by the sheer number of GAs, and combined with the GAR merge, it's a mess. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:02, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Oh, and for even more discouragement, while examining DC (which I only happened across because of a blooming Facebook post about Sybil Ludington-- since I don't participate at GA, I had never crossed paths with him in 16 years), I came across two more serial copyvio violators. Demoralizing, and not fun to work with content that is so bad, when we are so used to working with top-notch content and contributors. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:05, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

You can install user:Enterprisey/cv-revdel for those occasions where revdel is needed. Eg, here because someone caught and reverted right away, so we can easily revdel those two diffs. If the diffs are way too far back, or endured too long in the article, CCI admins say not to revdel as it will wipe out too much of the article, but one like this is revdelable. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:07, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

Thanks Sandy, that's useful. The only real copyvios I've caught were small scale from 2007/8 which have been mostly rewritten, but that's a good tool to know about. Thanks - SchroCat (talk) 08:29, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
Shall we offer a free subscription to Wikipedia for the best find? Something to make the work less dreary ... SandyGeorgia (Talk) 11:24, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
I’m thinking of DCGAR bingo: a full card needs to comprise coyvio, close paraphrase, OR, POV, source not containing the subject, etc. 5% pay rise to all winners? SchroCat (talk) 11:43, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
BINGO (Willis Fletcher Johnson); I can retire on these earnings. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 12:20, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

Icons and words

In response to your comment at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Rollback of Vector 2022/Discussion#c-SchroCat-20230222113100-77.179.86.51-20230221013200:

Having those top-right links as words, rather than icons would also be a huge benefit: icons mean different things to different people, while the words Talk, Sandbox, Watchlist and Contributions are much easier to identify. Making key navigation points more difficult to understand is mind-blowingly bad and I can't understand why you have got rid of some basic (and universally used) words for something that isn't intuitive.

While I also dislike icons in principle, I don't think this is a good argument for this specific case, because these words are not intuitive. "Sandbox" is a metaphor, "Watchlist" is a a metaphor too, "Talk" is at least somewhat unclear (no one else on the internet calls their discussion venues "talk pages"), and only "Contributions" actually means what it says (but it's an uncommon big word that could be unknown to non-native speakers).

I don't want to comment on that page, but I thought you might appreciate the thought. Cheers. Matma Rex talk 00:44, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

”Watchlist” is widely and commonly used (do a Google search and you’ll see multiple sites use the term); “Sandbox” is a common term for developers that also has a wider reach; and “Talk” really is common, with or without “page” (again, run a Google search for “talk page” and you’ll see the claim that ‘no one else on the internet calls their discussion venues "talk pages"’ evaporates rather quickly). As to ‘non-native speakers’, this is English WP, and if they struggle with a common word like “contribution”, they are likely to struggle with most articles and shouldn’t be making (m)any contributions in an English-language encyclopaedia. Thanks for your message, but the words are still infinitely better than the non-intuitive icons. - SchroCat (talk) 07:42, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Belated welcome back!

Twice in one day!

Grateful for your edits at Bennerley Viaduct and Operation Flavius (which is getting its day in the sun, deep joy!). I know bridges in the Midlands aren't your usual fare but I don't suppose I could tempt you to review Bennerley? Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:04, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

No problems. Of course - not only would I be happy to review, but I'm part way through already (just at the Restoration stage). I should be finished in the next 30 mins or so. Nothing major so far. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 20:15, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
HJ Mitchell, ps. Once Flavius is off the MP and it quietens down, I don't suppose you could have a quick look at this PR - it's an interesting story if nothing else! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 20:17, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
Happy to. I'm between projects so I'm just whacking vandals at the minute. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:26, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Edward Dando

The article Edward Dando you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Edward Dando for comments about the article, and Talk:Edward Dando/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. TFL notification

Hi, SchroCat. I'm just posting to let you know that List of works by John Buchan – a list that you have been heavily involved with – has been chosen to appear on the Main Page as Today's featured list for April 3. The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 21:33, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Edward Dando

On 16 March 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Edward Dando, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Edward Dando once ate 300 oysters with a loaf and a half of bread and butter in one sitting? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Edward Dando. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Edward Dando), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

A favour

Hi! If you get a minute, could you skim over Shooting of Stephen Waldorf for me please? It's obviously not quite ready obviously but it'll probably be my next FAC. It's close to bits of history you've written about so I thought you might like it! Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:48, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Harry, Of course - I'd be delighted! I'll pop along a little later today. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 08:40, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi Harry, I've emailed you. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 22:04, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
I think I'm just about finished. I've ordered a hard copy of the book you mentioned in your email and I'll add that when it gets here (I couldn't access all pages on the archive and it was £3 on Amazon). I can't nominate it at FAC until Bennerley wraps up anyway, so I've nominated it for peer review: Wikipedia:Peer review/Shooting of Stephen Waldorf/archive1. I'd really appreciate any comments you had. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:43, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Seeking review of David Bentley Hart article

Your recent brief notes on the David Bentley Hart article while it was a featured article candidate were very helpful. Yesterday (April 6), while this article was featured with a photo in the main page DYK feature, several more very helpful edits were made by a variety of visors. I'm hoping to find some other editors who can continue to improve the article so that it might be considered again eventually as a featured article candidate. Might you have time to add such a review and help to your list in the future, or might you recommend anyone else? Thank you for considering. Meanwhile, I'll be reading some of your articles and seeking to figure out what I can continue to improve on my own. -- Jjhake (talk) 16:46, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi Jjhake, Thanks for your note. I’m tied up for the next week or so, but I’ll get there after that. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 04:40, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! I'll look forward following and learning. -- Jjhake (talk) 12:43, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

FAC

Hi there - you were kind enough to review my last Gillingham FAC back in January. Don't suppose you might have a bit of time to look at my latest one, which is struggling a bit? Not to worry if not..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 20:28, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi Chris, I’m tied up in RL for the week, but free to review next weekend. Hopefully Gog will hold his hand until then, but it would make the nomination more secure if you’re able to get someone else to review in the interim. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 20:35, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond, hopefully the FAC is still alive in a week's time -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 20:37, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
