Help .. for Taiwan's townships classification category

Hi Vycl1994,

Can you help me in my Wikimedia Commons talk page with User:Kai3952?
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Chongkian#Township_office
Basically it is just about the official naming for township offices in Taiwan, in which by subdivision, there are 'urban', 'rural' and 'mountain indigenous' townships, thus I made Commons category based on those 3 naming for their respective township offices. I'm not sure if such 3 names are official and to be used in official context, or they are just used for classification purpose by the government. Thanks :)

Google Scholar links

Please stop removing {{Google Scholar id}} from external links sections of academic biographies. The citation counts listed at these links are crucial for determining academic notability per WP:PROF#C1. I believe that in many of these case "the additional links provide the reader with significant unique content and are not prominently linked from other official websites", so your claim that this is justified under WP:ELMINOFFICIAL does not hold water. If these links were included in the authority control line I wouldn't mind their removal but they aren't. —David Eppstein (talk) 06:05, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Alright, I can respect your point of view, but my own personal practice is to only use Google Scholar or similar, such as Academia.edu or Academic Tree, only as references where absolutely necessary. See Chen Chao-long, where his citation count is mentioned and cited to Google Scholar. As another example, it is established consensus to include IMDB external links even if an actor has an official website. I couldn't locate to similar consensus for academics, which is why I fell back on WP:ELMINOFFICIAL. If you are willing to engage in a consensus-building exercise, David Eppstein, I'd like to ask your opinion on {{ResearchGate}} in particular. Does it merit inclusion as an external link for academics when Google Scholar can or cannot be found? Vycl1994 (talk) 06:22, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
I don't have a strong opinion on ResearchGate one way or another but it's not a resource I seek out when writing biographies. It lacks the citation data that makes Google Scholar so much more useful — I think it's purely a list of publications. If that's all you want to accomplish, some subject-specific listings (DBLP for computer science, MathSciNet for math) would be a better choice, and in the case of DBLP can be included directly in the authority control line. Microsoft Academic would be a closer comparison to Google Scholar but (maybe just for historical reasons) I tend not to use them either. —David Eppstein (talk) 15:06, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi

@Vycl1994: needed help.182.54.155.4 (talk) 19:17, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

Hello, 182.54.155.4, how can I help with regard to Mashrafe (book) or any other article you are working on? Vycl1994 (talk) 19:31, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

@Vycl1994: Thanks, I will work soon some notable an interesting topic but for now can you create following redirects for this page to easily found when search and add some more categories. Create redirect:

  • Mashrafe Biography
  • Mashrafe biography
  • Mashrafe Book
  • Mashrafe book

And add Authority control and default sort which haven’t enough knowledge but I saw lots of article Where use this.182.54.155.4 (talk) 19:38, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

For guidance on the use of redirects, see Wikipedia:Redirect. For how to make them, read Help:Redirect. Information about authority control can be found at Wikipedia:Authority control and Help:Authority control. Defaultsort helps alphabetize articles within categories. For more information: Wikipedia:DEFAULTSORT, Wikipedia:NAMESORT, and Wikipedia:SORTKEY. Vycl1994 (talk) 20:06, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

@Vycl1994: Thanks for the link but it shows need to create an account to redirect. Can you create above redirects and add some more categories to this article and authority control. 182.54.155.4 (talk) 20:13, 8 September 2019 (UTC) @Vycl1994: will you help me??

Apologies, IP, if it seemed like I was ignoring your requests. I was working on Wikidata during the times I've been recently online. Remember that everyone is a volunteer and that there is no deadline. Here is what I have found, regarding Mashrafe (book). I have added as many categories, with proper subcategorization, for Mashrafe (book). There are no applicable authority control datasets for the book itself, only for the biography's subject Mashrafe Mortaza, and the proper dataset has been included in English Wikipedia's biographical article about him. Although redirects are cheap and guidelines regarding their use are comparatively lax, I am hesitant to create the ones you proposed, as the current title Mashrafe (book) aptly follows policy on article titles by being WP:CONCISE and WP:PRECISE, and also takes into account the guideline on disambiguation. Sucharit Sarkar

I appreciate the thoughtful edits you made to Michael Stillman. You look like an expert on categorization. I also did a fair bit of work on Sucharit Sarkar. That article had a fair number of problems and I hope it has fewer now. The categorization there also looks strange to me, but I don't want to make it worse. Perhaps you could take a look? Guidance on Academic page

I need some guidance from you with respect to a comment you made on the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athel_Cornish-Bowden page where under the section list of secondary sources you mention: “academics' influence should be discussed in articles about them, not listed as cruft here”.

Do you mean I should cite and describe more fully articles that specifically discusses the academic’s work? I’m new to writing biographies of notable academics, so I’m not entirely sure what to do. I think what would be very useful is if you know of a Wikipedia page of an academic that you think is an excellent example for me to look at. Most of the ones I’ve seen done appear to be of high quality. Thanks Rhodydog (talk) 05:45, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

A short edit summary occasionally does not include every nuance and detail. If this statement confused you, I apologize. I hope to offer adequate and understandable clarification here.
On Athel Cornish-Bowden, I removed the h-index and citation numbers of scientists who had a Wikipedia article written about them. Here is my reasoning for making that edit. The article "Athel Cornish-Bowden" is a biography of Athel Cornish-Bowden, and it should describe his work and collaboration with others, without expressly arguing for the notability of other scientists. Put simply, listing the citation counts of other scientists in an article about Cornish-Bowden is too much information. A researcher with highly cited work is eligible for a Wikipedia article, and the impact of that research should be discussed as appropriate.
Here's is what I mean. Stephen Hawking and George F. R. Ellis are notable because both have won prestigious awards. If I wanted to say something about their work together, I could say "Stepehen Hawking and George F. R. Ellis co-authored the 1974 book The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time." The sentence "Future Templeton Prize-winner George F. R. Ellis and Stephen Hawking, who later received the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, co-authored a book titled The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time, published in 1974," is not concise and contains too many examples of notability for other people.
It's true that Douglas Kell has cited Athel Cornish-Bowden, but not everything Kell has written has cited Cornish-Bowden, so listing Kell's h-index on a page about Cornish-Bowden is unnecessary. This statement is true of any two academics. If the academic partnership is notable, an article such as Masters and Johnson can be written, but even on that page "H-index" is not mentioned once. Rather that article covers in prose the impact of the research undertaken by William Masters and Virginia E. Johnson. Vycl1994 (talk) 18:18, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, this is very useful. Personally I didn’t want to put in the h-index numbers so I’m glad you took them out. I’ll do some more research. Rhodydog (talk) 15:59, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

Michael Woodroofe

Thanks for connecting Michael Woodroofe with wikidata and authority control! Only I notice an error in a category you added -- he was faculty at Carnegie Mellon for a short period, but was never a student there. He's alumni of UOregon (PhD) and Stanford (undergraduate). What is the right practice for categorization for someone who was a faculty at one institution for a short time, but is strongly associated with a different institution?

Since I'm not sure what the right thing is, and am COIed anyway, perhaps you could remove Category:Carnegie Mellon University alumni or else change it to Category:Carnegie Mellon University faculty? (Whichever you think is more appropriate.) Thanks! Russ Woodroofe (talk) 20:19, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

Sorry, Russ Woodroofe. The Carnegie alumni category was my mistake. If Michael Woodroofe was on the tenure track at Carnegie, then the article about him should be placed in the Carnegie faculty category, and now it has been. As an aside, if an academic held a postdoctoral research position or adjunct professorship at [Some University], then, I believe they would not be placed in the [Some University faculty] category. Vycl1994 (talk) 20:45, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
I guess that's a bright line that's easy to check. I'll keep in mind, and try to follow. I appreciate all that you do! Russ Woodroofe (talk) 21:04, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

Wei Biao Wu

Vycl1994, I just wanted to drop a polite note off of the talk page (as I probably should've before). I was impressed with the sources that you dug up on Wei Biao Wu, and thought that some of the links should be collected somewhere easy-to-find. Since I was also looking at removing the Koopmans award from the article (I think including it may actually make Wu look less notable), I posted everything to the talk page. I hope I didn't sound dismissive or anything.

I was particularly impressed with the Chinese source, although it looks to be unofficial (and so unreliable in the technical sense of Wikipedia). Am I wrong in my reading of a Google-translated version that it is a list of Fudan alumni? So that the graduation date is a date of graduation from Fudan? Too bad that it's not on the official page of an alumni association or something! Russ Woodroofe (talk) 04:02, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

I replied to you to maintain the flow of conversation, but I do not take issue with your tone and did not read negativity into your statements. In general I wanted some statement from me to be there for the AfC regulars to take into consideration whenever the review of that draft commences. Regarding the source itself: Yes, it claims to be a list of Fudan alumni, but is not hosted on an a website that appears to be affiliated with the university, as you noticed. To be specific, it appears to be a blog, and if I wished to do so, I could open my own blog on any blogging platform and claim to compile a comprehensive list related to any subject of my choosing, which illustrates why that blog is an unreliable source. Reading over what I wrote on the draft's talk page, I conflated my main point and supporting details with a secondary observation, and should probably take the time to articulate it better. So, here is that clarification: I lean toward disregarding everything that particular source states, as it is does not appear reliable, official, or affiliated in any way with Fudan University, even if the dates given for Wei Bao Wu matched up with self-published primary sources. Vycl1994 (talk) 04:24, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
I agree on reliability. It does still seem worthwhile to me to leave the link on the talk page, and I think what you said there about it is ok (but it doesn't hurt to also link here). I'm glad you didn't hear me as being negative, which was the main thing I was worried about. Russ Woodroofe (talk) 05:34, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

Categories

Sorry, but this edit does not make sense to me. See Category:American women writers which is stated to include pages also to be found in sub- and parent-cats. Like racing drivers; E.g. Lewis Hamilton and Max Chilton who are in both 'English racing drivers' and 'English Formula One drivers' even though one is technically a subcat of the other.

Also, changing 'American women writers' to '21st-century American writers' does not seem correct. If it were to be changed it would be to '21st-century American women writers'. However, the page is already in that category and as I understand it should not be in the parent cat ('21st-century American writers') as that is not a non-diffusing category. Cheers. Eagleash (talk) 06:13, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

@Eagleash: WP:DUPCAT reads: Not all subcategories serve the "diffusion" function described above; some are simply subsets which have some special characteristic of interest, such as Best Actor Academy Award winners as a subcategory of Film actors or Musical films as a subcategory of Musicals. These are called non-diffusing subcategories. They provide an exception to the general rule that pages are not placed in both a category and its subcategory: there is no need to take pages out of the parent category purely because of their membership of a non-diffusing subcategory. (Of course, if the pages also belong to other subcategories that do cause diffusion, then they will not appear in the parent category directly.)
Since learning about that section I have noticed that many gender-related categories are tagged with {{Non-diffusing subcategory}}. As such I have since placed Category:Century-by nationality-by gender writers into the non-diffusing Category:Century by nationality writers. If those articles can be placed in Category:nationality by gender and writing type, I consider that fully diffused, and do not place Category:Century by nationality writers on the page. Arlene Alda's career spans two centuries and multiple fields. As a result the article about her is in Category:21st-century American writers, Category:21st-century American women writers, Category:20th-century American writers, Category:20th-century American women writers and also categorized by writing type and nationality Category:American children's writers, and the non-diffusing writing type by gender and nationality Category:American women children's writers. Julianna Tymoczko

Information icon Hello, I'm David Eppstein. I noticed that you made an edit concerning content related to a living (or recently deceased) person on Julianna Tymoczko, but you didn't support your changes with a citation to a reliable source, so I removed it. Wikipedia has a very strict policy concerning how we write about living people, so please help us keep such articles accurate and clear. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you!

In addition, please see WP:BLPPRIVACY for cautions against including the birthdates of living people in some cases even when they can be sourced. —David Eppstein (talk) 23:36, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

David, how I use {{authority control}} and the Library of Congress Control Number for biographical details has been discussed at length on my talk page and elsewhere. Maria Tymoczko's origin is cited to a book she wrote, and J. Tymoczko's relationship to her is also already cites the same book, validly WP:ABOUTSELF. Previously I had done something similar for Aaron Hawkins (engineer). Discussions I have participated in (see my talk archives) establish the United States Library of Congress as a reliable source. If you have further advice and guidance, I am willing to consider it. Vycl1994 (talk) 00:03, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
You added a birthdate and an ethnic descent category to an article without adding a source for the birthdate, adding any textual mention of the ethnic descent, adding a source for the ethnic descent, or adding any justification for how the ethnic descent (which in this case amounts to only 1/8 of her ancestry, through her great-grandmother) is relevant for her notability. That violates WP:BLP, WP:EGRS, and probably also WP:NONDEF. I don't care whether this is your standard practice, it's not Wikipedia's. Don't do it. You can be blocked for continuing to edit in this manner.
Incidentally, I have no problems with your related addition of Category:American people of Slovak descent to Maria Tymoczko. The difference is that it is mentioned and sourced in the article text and, because she grew up speaking Slovak among other languages, it is very relevant to her work in translation studies. Also, I note that you added to Wikidata a claim that JT is a US citizen, without a valid source. It is extremely likely that she is indeed a US citizen but we have no proof of this. If this were Wikipedia rather than Wikidata it would be a bad edit. As it is, it is part of a pattern of poor sourcing on Wikidata that explains why the import of Wikidata information into Wikipedia articles cannot be tolerated. —David Eppstein (talk) 01:31, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

Re: Regeneracion (Colombia)

Hello Vycl1994,

Thank you for your attention and work on the article Regeneración (Colombia). Although there were some edits that I find questionable:

1. The heading and title have to be in English since all cited text in English refer to the period as Regeneration. Also, because querries for the topic as Regeneration won't yield any result and would not lead to disambiguation.

Moreover, in articles like Solidarity (Polish Trade Union) it is not always translated into the polish Solidarinosc, but as "Solidarity" throughout the article. In the same manner all instances of "Regeneration" don't have to be translated into "La Generación".

2. Regeneration is not just a political movement but also it became a historical era. Therefore it has to be part of the Political History of Colombia as well as Political Movements.

3. In Spanish the use of the "definite" article before the noun denotes a particular instance of the noun. That is La Prohibición refers to a widely know instance or the historical period. Whereas, prohibición is just the act and effect of prohibiting or to forbid something. Therefore "La Regeneración" has to be listed as such even in the heading. On the other hand, in English the use of a capital letter would denote a noun so prohibition and Prohibition indicate the same difference.

I would greatly appreciate if the changes were reversed considering these facts. It would greatly impact that the article is found when sought. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lordtree2 (talkcontribs) 02:32, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Lordtree2: I could not access the English-language journal articles, and will assume good faith on your assertions that the English sources follow WP:NCUE and WP:UE. I originally moved the article to the Spanish name Regeneración (Colombia) because it appears that way, without definite articles, on Spanish Wikipedia. If English is to be used throughout the article, the Spanish name will only be listed once in the lede, per WP:FORLANG and WP:LEADALT. For categorization guidance, I followed WP:TOPICCAT WP:SETCAT and WP:SUBCAT. Specifically in this case Category:Political movements in Colombia is a diffusing subcategory of Category:Political history of Colombia, so articles should not be in a container category as well as a subcategory. Page moves commencing soon. Vycl1994 (talk) 03:05, 18 February 2020 (UTC) (edited 03:18, 18 February 2020 (UTC))

Lai Ching-te

Hi,

I think the article as it currently stands doesn't make sense because in Taiwan this nomenclature is not used.

It is either Lai Ching-te or William Lai. William Lai Ching-te is perhaps only used in Singapore or Malaysia? Therefore can we add William Lai in the infobox (not necessarily where I out the transcription but somewhere else? Or just remove it completely as William lai will redirect to Lai Ching-te.

Asoksevil (talk) 14:50, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

WP:COMMONNAME is judged primarily by what English-language sources call him. Out of the English-language sources listed on WikiProject Taiwan's talk page, the Taipei Times and Taiwan News use William Lai, while only the Central News Agency romanize his name Lai Ching-te. This is WP:COMMONNAME in action further supported by MOS:IDENTITY, because Taiwan News has mentioned that Lai himself has stated that his English name is William. As such, per WP:BLPLEAD it should appear in the WP:LEDE, as concisely as possible within the WP:FIRSTSENTENCE. If an English name frequently used within English language sources it should be mentioned. Formatting is inconsistent throughout English Wikipedia, so if you wish to make it consistent, WP:BEBOLD.
For instance Han Kuo-yu's article combines his English and romanized names in the lede, as does Eric Chu, but Roger Hsieh's English name and romanized Chinese name are separated, as is Tseng Ming-chung's. Chang San-cheng, Chiang Hsiao-yen, Wang Li-ling, and Wang Ju-hsuan are titled per the guidance at WP:NATURAL, and their common English names are split up too, while Paul Chiu, Woody Duh, and Johnny Chiang don't include romanized names at all. Hsu Yu-jen is another WP:NATURAL name, because Jason Hsu requires disambiguation from the actor, but the Hsu Yu-jen article only includes his English name, for which sources were provided here, in the infobox, and not the lede. English variety

Information icon Hello. In a recent edit, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, or Pakistan use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author of the article used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. Ythlev (talk) 13:26, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

Hou Yu-ih

Hi,

I just wanted to leave a note here saying that Taipei Times is quoting the name wrong (we shouldn't just go with one source) and other official sources (even his own personal page) are in the correct spelling:

Proof of source: https://www.newtaipei.solutions/hou-yu-ih https://foreigner.ntpc.gov.tw/home.jsp?id=0c69de209c17e5c4 https://www.instagram.com/hou.yuih/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/houyuih/

Therefore, to me it doesn't make sense that Hou Yu-ih redirects to Hou You-yi it should be the other way around as Hou Yu-ih is the main profile.

Asoksevil (talk) 14:55, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Asoksevil, as I have stated several times in myriad discussions, WP:COMMONNAME takes precedence over WP:OFFICIALNAME. The first sentence of WP:OFFICIALNAME cannot be worded more clearly: People often assume that, where an official name exists for the subject of a Wikipedia article, that name is ipso facto the correct title for the article, and that if the article is under another title then it should be moved. In many cases this is contrary to Wikipedia practice and policy.. Even MOS:IDENTITY is applied after WP:COMMONNAME. Hou Yu-ih is used, and that is why that romanization is also included in the lede, but Hou You-yi remains more common in English-language sources, and that is why the article was moved. Discussions that neither of us participated in, but reached the same conclusion include Talk:Shinzo Abe#Requested move 2 March 2020 and Talk:Helena Paparizou#Requested move 21 May 2019. Returning to Taiwanese subjects, Terry Gou's surname appears Gou because a majority of sources do not use the correct or official pinyin or Wade–Giles romanization, Guo and Kuo, respectively. Ma Ying-jeou and Tsai Ing-wen both have the character "英" in their Chinese names, but English-language sources romanize it differently for each person, and the titles of their respective articles reflect that. If you wish to give more weight to WP:OFFICIALNAME every mononymous entertainer would be moved to their birth name (Madonna, Beyoncé), as would every performer with a stage name (Lady Gaga, Eminem). Titles of nations, states, and territories would be moved to their formal names (Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Republic of China, State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations). I repeat, as it stands, the consensus to follow WP:COMMONNAME is strong. If you wish to discuss this, and replace it with WP:OFFICIALNAME or another guideline, the appropriate discussion venue is Wikipedia talk:Article titles. Vycl1994 (talk) 15:59, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Vycl1994, while we have discussed the issue when there are both English and Chinese names (Joseph Wu and Jaushieh Wu), in this particular case I don't think the argument of his WRONG name spelling by media leading it to become more "common" should take precedent over his CORRECT spelling. This isn't an issue of WP:COMMONNAME vs WP:OFFICIALNAME. As an example, if someone's name is actually is Chrystal but it gets misspelled as Krystal, Qristal, Crystal or any other variation and somehow it gets "common" because nobody has bothered conducting proper due diligence, should we let it continue or should we inform these media that they have made a mistake?

This exact source you quoted here: https://focustaiwan.tw/society/202003250016 (Focus Taiwan which is the official English media of the Taiwan's government) has acknowledged the error and made a correction in subsequent corections in newer articles: https://focustaiwan.tw/society/202006030006, https://focustaiwan.tw/politics/202005310009, https://focustaiwan.tw/society/202005030017

On Terry Gou. Your assumption is that his family name is wrongly spelled, but what if it were right and that's how it is spelled and the media didn't get it wrong this time? In that case, I support using it, however if this was indeed wrong and Terry Gou can confirm his last name being romanized as Kuo/Guo then we should inform media accordingly so they can amend that. To me, it does not make sense that we are misspelling people's name knowingly and shrugging this off as WP:COMMONNAME to suck it up. No, it is a mistake and it has to be corrected, especially if that person has shown willingness to do so.

on Tsai Ing-wen or Ma Ying-jeou. They have different spellings because their official romanized version is different and that's how they want them to be called. If they didn't get Tsai's name right and even if other media repeated the error, we should not give them a free pass under your WP:COMMONNAME but reach out to them that they should use the correct version. Nobody wants to have their name misspelled and ignored.

Lastly on Madonna, Eminem, etc and countries. I do not get your point, like I said, this was a spelling issue not whether we should use the artist name or his birth name for Madonna or Eminem. Clearly, we should be using what they are more comfortable with and whether we are referring to their personal persona or artist persona.

And to finish this up, I am not arguing WP:COMMONNAME vs WP:OFFICIALNAME but that spelling issues cannot be taken as WP:OFFICIALNAME, especially when these people themselves have shown preference to have their name right. I am happy to bring this to discussion to the Taiwan Project for further opinions but I believe I am making a fair assessment. Asoksevil (talk) 13:47, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Asoksevil People's preferences fall under MOS:IDENTITY, which is to be used only if a common name cannot be established in English-language sources (sources that follow WP:UE, and inform WP:NCUE, a naming convention of the English Wikipedia.) See Talk:Soong Mei-ling#Requested move 8 November 2015 for a related discussion that still has opposition, but has yet to be overturned. Vycl1994 (talk) 14:56, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
Vycl1994 I don't think you have replied to all my points, again my argument being that we are using the the wrong spelling because at this point "some" has deemed it to be more "common" (which is debatable as I have shown you sources who had it wrong and corrected it) and I had given you another example of the name "Chrystal". As more media and people start to use the correct form, the previous wrong common will fade away so why waiting for a thing that it is pretty certain that it will happen? To be fair, I don't think we will reach a conclusion ourselves so can we have a vote like with that article Soong Mei-ling, Shinzo Abe and let other peoples vote with arguments in favor or against? Asoksevil (talk) 16:50, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
You state that only some sources above support the common name, but the fact that I could find non-Taiwan based WP:UE sources to make the comparison shows that Hou's post is high profile enough to locate global coverage. Therefore, a wider range of sources must be considered when determining common name. The fact that some Taiwan-based UE media have changed spellings, does not (yet) make it common enough for a change to occur, as the consensus at Soong Mei-ling and Shinzo Abe found. The English Wikipedia must react and rely on sources. Its articles cannot and should not be trendsetters, supposing or suggesting that something is certain or not. Vycl1994 (talk) 17:57, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

Vycl1994, there are still pending points/arguments you haven't replied so far. You said you could't find any sources non Taiwan based sources, so let me put a couple of them from all sorts of countries and languages below:

According to the above, it is not setting a trend, IT ALREADY IS A TREND so your argument is not applicable. Again, this is not a English vs Chinese name, but an spelling of a Chinese name so why are you quoting things unrelated to this? And even if you take WP:COMMONNAME angle, I have shown you multiple sources where the name quoted is Hou Yu-ih. So there are now two very strong arguments for the change:

1. It is clearly common around for both Taiwan and not Taiwan based foreign media. 2. His name is being misspelled due to ignorance and lack of journalism professionalism and according to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(Chinese)#Romanization_of_names "Chinese names should be written in Hanyu Pinyin unless there is a more common romanization used in English (for example, Chiang Kai-shek, Sun Yat-sen) or when the subject of the article is likely to prefer a non-pinyin romanization as is often the case with people from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and older overseas Chinese communities (for example, Lee Kuan Yew, Lee Teng-hui, Tung Chee-hwa)." I have provided you the official romanization and his own preference which you are disregarding based on WP:COMMONNAME. 3. I believe my arguments are sound and make a strong case to have this changed back to Hou Yu-ih so if you are not refuting the points I made, I think it is fair we revert the changes back to what it was. Happy to have another third party/group jump into this and have a final say on this. Asoksevil (talk) 18:55, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
