changes for client, Eric Alper's biography

Regarding the Eric Alper page, I was asked to make a few changes for the client Eric. The first paragraph includes specific, past info and Eric wants it more open and generic. Also in the second edit the current info seems incorrect where Eric says his grand father not great grandfather. (I believe that's Hannah Alper's great grandfather)

@SomeWhatLife: The non-free content guidelines apply to all editors, both new and experienced. Use of non-free content must meet all of the non-free content guidelines. If you "did not say these files were irreplaceable", then you basically are acknowledging that the files do not meet WP:NFCC#1. Use of non-free content on Wikipedia can be confusing because of the criteria that must be met. Diane Anderson-Minshall

Hi about Diane Anderson-Minshall- I work with transgender people and I came across her video with Larry King. It was then when I noticed that her photo was not up or corrected. I also am transgender and I respect her husband's journey. Out of a whim, I asked for photos to put up and they gave me loads of photos but the three I used were the best looking. @Aspieaboutit: You uploaded these images as non-free content. The use of non-free content on Wikipedia must comply with all of the non-free content criteria. As theses are images of living people, for use in the infobox, these images do not meet WP:NFCC#1. These images are replaceable with freely licensed images. Even if no freely images currently exist, ones could be made. You state that you have permission to use them. It's unclear what that permission is. Aside from the aforementioned non-free content exceptions, any photos uploaded will need to be provided under a free license. You state that you got permission but there are several problems with that. There is no proof of permission. There is no statement of a free license. The infobox photos look like they are posed professional photos. For the US, the copyright holder of a photograph is normally the photographer, and not the subject of the photo. Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission provides information about requesting permission for a photo. Copyright, and Wikipedia rules on what is allowable images to upload can be very confusing. It's simple Diane Anderson-Minshall gave me the photos to use when I reached out to her for an updated one. I have an email stating that I can use them. As for them not being free- she hasn't uploaded them anywhere. Do you want me to have her upload them? @Aspieaboutit:It may seem simple, but it isn't. As stated above, the images must be freely licensed, and the permission must come from the copyright holder. These photos aren't selfies so unless the photographer has assigned the copyrights to Diane Anderson-Minshal, her permission isn't sufficient. As well, there is no statement of any free license. In terms of help, the above original response to you already provides the links. Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission is the key one. So, let me get this, Diane- paid to get photos taken for her. He gives them to her and she gave them to me. That makes them not hers? Really? The last time I checked if I pay a photographer for photos, they are mine. See, simple.

You may have physical copies of the photo, and the right to use the photos, but unless the contract with the photographer included transferring the copyrights to you, the copyright is held by the photographer. Curious about revert

Hi there. I'm curious about this revert. You say it's because of WP:ELYES, but that doesn't entirely explain it. The WP:CCSG, the Canadian Communities Wikiproject structure guidelines are for only a link to the official town link. However you removed the link to the official town link which to be honest seems a bit odd. As for the link being included because of WP:ELYES, that doesn't apply here. Remember ELYES is only that it is allowed under regular circumstances, not that it must be included. The image could easily be integrated into the article if one wished, it's clearly far out of copyright so a copy could be uploaded and incorporated quite easily. I can understand wanting to keep the image in the article in some manner, but to remove the official site of the down doesn't seem right. I think it would be best that the town link is included, as per the wikiproject guidelines, and the image uploaded into Wikipedia and incorporated into the article. @Canterbury Tail: With respect to the Town of Oakville site, I understand that it is technically the official site, but removed it as it does not really provide much in the way of information about Palermo. You'll find some planning documents from the Town of Oakville about this area and that's it. It really feels like the external link is there just for the sake of a guideline versus being a useful adjunct to the article. Having said that, I don't have a strong objection to it and if you feel it really should be there, then feel free to add it.

With respect to the image, if it can be determined that it is PD, then I am all for integrating it into the article. It surely would be better that way. I used an external link because the data page provided no guidance on copyright. I can certainly try digging a bit more into the copyright status. @Peter39c: Translating copyrighted works is considered a derivative work, and so your translation is a copyright infringement on the various news sites which you used to do the translation. See WP:DERIVATIVE where it provides the example: "The French translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a derivative of the English novel. Translator Jean-François Ménard required the permission of J. K. Rowling's agent, Christopher Little Literary Agency, to prepare, publish and distribute it."

Please don't take my edit summary at Relative Justice the wrong way. It was an honest suggestion. Not saying my sources were great, but there are numerous sources on Google (non-primary) basically stating to the same thing, so maybe you could find one that you are satisfied with since you are dissatisfied with mine. I provided a third one in the article in response your criticism that it's not a satisfactory source. Hopefully, the third one does the job. Hello Whpq,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Hi Mr Whpq, I hope you're doing fine today. Please I want to ask, if I should download a file I posted on another space e.g Google map and post that same file here on commons, am I still the copy right owner of that image? Remember I was the one that posted that same image in that space and maybe for some reasons, I no longer have that same image on my phone, and I decided to download from maps or the website I posted it so as to post the same image here for a purpose, hope I'm not doing anything wrong by posting that image and by putting my name as the original author? And if I can post that image will I post it as my personal stuff or post it as fair use? @Faster than Thunder: I assume you are referring to the Tuttle Twins images you uploaded. Those images (and most other images you find on the internet) are copyrighted. Wikipedia uses only freely licensed images with very narrow exceptions. non-free content is allowed if it meets all of the non-free content criteria. Note that one of the criteria is that the images may only be used in article. That means they cannot be used in drafts or user sandboxes as you were doing. Media Copyright Questions is a good place to ask for help with image licensing. Also, as a new editor, help is also available at the Teahouse. -- Whpq (talk) 01:13, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

1) I am not upset. You felt I made a mistake and told me so. In retrospect I agree. 2) You are far from the only person to misuse revert, which is primarily intended for vandalism. 3) I feel you are contributing to the general demoralization of Wikipedia editors by doing so however 4) therefore I am explaining this to you.

As mentioned, I don't normally deal with the fair use policy and therefore punted. An excess of caution on my part perhaps, sure. But although I'm far from a newbie, WP:DNB still pretty much applies. I damn sure am not going to list the next question I have. This is not the only problem at Wikipedia, but it's a big one and one I bring up when it arises. I don't know how that board works, but closing or archiving the post would have been fine. I guess I should give you credit for the explanation, which *was* a step beyond the disdainful dismissal that usually goes with a revert, so there is that. I agree with your conclusion; I just would like you to reconsider your methods. And btw, "I'm sorry you're upset" isn't really an apology, if that is what you were trying for. "I'm sorry, I did not mean to upset you" would have been better. Although still wrong ;) I am annoyed but not upset. What upsets me is when somebody deletes a 5,000 word translation on the history of the Visigoths or something because they don't feel I am translating it fast enough, lol, since we are sharing. OK? @Elinruby: I can't see anything that Whpq has done wrong. In fact they took the time to explain what they did on your talk page. Revert with edit summary happens all the time, not just for vandalism. Maybe you are confusing with WP:ROLLBACK? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:54, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

sigh. I give him credit for the explanation and yes, my initial post was a bit short. However, he did do something wrong. I am explaining because I assume good faith. OK? Revert is for vandalism. A question that answered itself with a redlink is not vandalism. I can post some additional editing policies if there is confusion about this. As I mentioned, this is a frequent error and I don't particularly blame him for making it since no doubt he was taught to do so. I am not even actually annoyed anymore now that I see he is a compatriot. But yeah. Don't use revert on people who are trying to improve the wiki. For real, if you look it up you will see that it says so. It counts against that editor for all time ;) I have been asked to explain each of the times I have been reverted in fourteen years, more than once. Now, it happens to me little enough that this is not really my issue with it, but if he does this as SOP he is driving away editors, and I need some of those editors for the stuff I am trying to get done :) If it is not vandalism just make the change or ask the editor what the heck they are thinking. @Elinruby: I agree that my "apology" could have been worded better, but I disagree with your assertion that reverting is for vandalism. It is often used for vandalism, but that doesn't mean that it cannot be used in other circumstances. I'll explain further how I arrived at my actions. I actually did consider just closing the discussion but, opted to remove it. The reason was that this was looked to me like an error in understanding from somebody unfamiliar with FFD and reading deletion logs. There is no discussion to be had about a file that was already deleted in 2017. Do I permanently leave this error out there in view, or just remove it and provide an explanation? Considering WP:NOTBURO, there is no reason that I must use the close procedure so I opted for what I considered the nicer approach of removing, and providing an explanation. If you think that's the wrong way to handle things, then we will just have to agree to disagree because if the same circumstances come up again, this is the choice of action I would take again. -- Whpq (talk) 15:18, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

Iam sorry to re-engage but on re-reading you I see that in your mind the choice was between closing and removing. To be absolutely, utterly clear, deleting, in my world, would have been fine. Reverting is not. I will close by urging you again to read the links above. I realize that what you did is commonly done, but the fact that you *can* do something does not mean that you *should*. Even if other people do it too. A lot of people refuse the covid vaccine, for example, but that doesn't make it a good idea. Look at it this way. I could call you a vandal who hurts Wikipedia by conflating procedural error and vandalism, but since I am trying for improvement it is more productive to note that you apparently don't realize that we constantly lose editors whose native language isn't English, because of exactly what you are doing. That is information that you do not appear to have. I don't intend to berate you about this but since this might maybe be an actual misapprehension, again, please read the policies. File:Paigcsoldiers.jpeg was already deleted way back in July of 2017. There is nothing to delete. You also state "please read the policies". I'll point out that Wikipedia:Revert only when necessary is an essay and not policy as stated right at the top of the essay. In fact, it states it "is an essay on the edit warring policy", so unless you are claiming I'm edit-warring, then even as an essay, it's not applicable. I am trying to convey that if the goal is removal it is not necessary to revert. I also submit that the essay, which I selected because I thought it explained the policy better, amounts to what we in information technology call best practices. In any event, here is what I see. I spend a lot of time over in Pages needing translation into English (WP: PNT) encouraging editors who don’t write English well to contribute, because they understand the source and with a little goodwill we can fix the English. Similarly, a lot of translated articles lack references so somebody deletes them in the first seconds of their existence, while someone is trying to reference them. The fact that you *can* do this does not mean it helps Wikipedia. Yes, translator can indeed do their translating using quill pens, then type them in, but frankly that’s inconvenient enough to discourage *me*, a native English speaker, and the Portuguese and Spanish speakers just go back to a wiki that doesn’t slap their hand for trying to contribute. I am making the changes to the page for Jamie Costa as a fan. I had a chance to take a few headshots of this person when we crossed paths a few years back. The other images on that I have tried to use were listed on IMDb as I sent these to Jamie, however, I didn't send all of them to him from our session. The image that is on the page currently is from a super old fan film that he was a part of and I thought it would look nice to have a more up-to-date image on the page. Is this something that is still a conflict of interest? The time I took his headshot there was no money exchanged, just had my camera and asked him if I could grab a few shots to send him.

@Natureisablessing images of a living person MUST be freely licensed. You cannot use images from Facebook or Twitter, those site have licenses that are not considered free. Do you see ANYTHING on those pages that supports a compatible license? Remember that basically every site is protected by copyright. The page must explicitly state that it as a compatible license (please read the WP:IUPC page). Generally, assume that an image you find online does not have a compatible license for Wikipedia. Yes, it's a strict policy that a lot of other websites don't have / ignore, but the goal of Wikipedia is to provide a freely available encyclopedia. None of those images are acceptable. Non free image from Youtube

Could you please take a look at File:TommyInnit On Tom Simons Vlog Channel Video "A Month In The Life Of Tom Simons".png? My long term understanding is that this type of usage is not allowed unless the person is deceased and there's no longer any opportunity to create an original. There has been a lot of promotion towards this article. The rationale used itself seems 'wrong' in that it should be used in context of a commentary on a video, not as a means of identifying an individual in a BLP. @Rocknrollmancer: Your understanding is correct. The use of this image to "quickly see what Tom looks like" does not meet WP:NFCC#1. As a living person, even if there is currently no free image of the person, one could be made by somebody snapping a photo of the person and releasing under a free license. As such the image is replaceable. As it does not meet the criteria for use of non-free content, it should be deleted. You can tag replaceable non-free images for deletion by adding {{subst:rnfu}}(that four letter acronym template stands for Replaceable Non-Free Use) to the file description. -- Whpq (talk) 03:30, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Copyright questions

I don't fully understand why, but it seems you've marked, like, half of my images up for deletion for copyright violations. I appreciate that you are looking out for Wikipedia and don't take it personally at all, but I'm pretty sure most are fine. For example, File:Eisenhower and egan.png, is from the Associated Press, and it seems that Associated Press images from before 1st Jan 1964 are allowed. I've seen it on other images, and these images were explicitly approved. These have source and author info too, so, I am generally just really confused. I'd like a little word on what's going on. @Mycranthebigman:That particular file has been deleted, but working from memory, what I was was that there waas an assertion that the file was from Associated Press, and an assertion at the image was from 1964. What was missing was any evidence that the image was from AP and published in 1964. In other words, there was no proof that the conditions of the license were met. Taking another example, you have uploaded File:Old waino hendrickson.PNG indicating a license of cc-by-4.0 and giving this as the source. I can find no statement of any sprt of Creative Commons licensing on that page. How did you determine this was licensed as cc-by-4.0? File request for deletion

Hello, I want to make it first known that I am not here to complain or argue, and I understand why you nominated the files from The Walt Disney Company for deletion. I want to know if there is any alternatives and how I could keep any of the images. If not could, could I possibly upload different file or something (I'm assuming not). As a free content encyclopedia, Wikipedia's usage of non-free images is deliberately very strict. The only way to keep those images would be for them to meet all of the non-free content criteria. I don't see how they could be kept. If I felt the images could be kept, I would not have nominated them for deletion. Note that Steamboat Willie is going to be entering the public domain in 2024 barring any more shenanigans from Disney. At that point, the use of the image would no linger be subject to the non-free content criteria as it would be freely licensed. Whpq (talk) 19:18, 18 May 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Whpq,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 818 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 859 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

You uploaded File:Al-Arba'een Mosque after destruction.webp as a non-free image. Non-free content must meet all of the non-free content criteria. There was a Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2022 June 7#File:Al-Arba'een Mosque after destruction.webp opened that explained why it was nominated for deletion. You were notified of the deletion discussion, but chose not to participate. user:Explicit was the admin who reviewed the deletion nomination and made a determination that deletion was warranted, and made the deletion. You can query the deletion, on the deleting admin's talk page. You state you have permission. If the copyright holder has released the image under a free license, you can have the copyright holder send in verification of the permission.
