Source request

Hi X201, if you get a free minute, could you help me get hold of the Rez interview in the 100th issue of Edge (August 2001) that you listed here? No need to rush, but I've recently started updating the article and I'd like to see what they had to say. Thanks in advance! -Thibbs (talk) 15:27, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

Copyvio removed

I remove this question along with your good faith response [1], hope you don't midn as the only thing you said is it was offtopic anyway. The "question" is almost definitely a copyvio from here [2]. It's quite doubtful the IP who posted here is the original author as they've been posting questions from different people on the forums, something that's been done before. X201 -- I finally did it and uploaded the linked to my map showing the path of the D&H Canal. I even made clearer how to link to the KML in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_U.S._Roads/Maps_task_force/Tutorial.

Merging infobox song & single

As you noted, Type= needs some work and should handle Primfac's suggestion about retaining existing colors. The Chronology= field is used in both infoboxes: in single it overrides "Artist" for a "<Different artist> singles chronology" header; in song it replaces "Album" with a "<Different album> track listing" header. The rest seems relatively straight forward – most are used the same for both. For album tracks, it may be clarified with "prev_track", "prev_track_no", "this_track_no", "next_track", "next_track_no" to distinguish from "Last single" and "Next single". Do you see other problems? —Ojorojo (talk) 19:19, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Removal of |type=

Noticed a few of your edits are removing "[[Album]]" from |type= (see this tracking category). I think it's better to change values like that to "studio", which is usually what's meant I think. Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

I explained what was happening when I created a specific tracking category for the type field in Infobox Album. You commented in the discussion when I explained what I was doing. I'm cleaning out all of the bad values as I empty Category:Pages using infobox album with unknown parameters, then I'll go back and fix them. - X201 (talk) 08:00, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Recent album edits

Not sure what you did, but you seem to have caused a lot of formatting errors by leaving the italics inside the new chronology parameters. Usually substitution itself should be enough to format them. Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

Looks like the template isn't ignoring them when they're there. It's picking up the first apostrophe and using it itself for some reason, then rendering the rest as text. I've set up a routine to remove them now. - X201 (talk) 14:55, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

File:Wipeout logo.png trademark vs. copyright

With respect, the trademark status of anything does not affect its copyright status. The two are irrespective of each other. Therefore, simply because something is trademarked does not automatically mean it is copyrighted. Therefore, we must look to the content of the logo in this case to determine if copyright can sustain. One of the tests is the threshold of originality. See Threshold of originality, which explains this test. In this case, we have the name of the product laid out in a font. There's nothing in the logo besides the letters in the name of the product. Therefore, this logo lies below the threshold of originality and does not attract copyright. For another example of this, please see File:Coca-Cola logo.svg. More information on this topic is available at Wikipedia:Logos#Copyright-free_logos and at Wikipedia:Public_domain#Fonts_and_typefaces. I am reverting your restoration of the non-free logo licensing template to this image. Please do not restore it, as it is very clearly pd-text. If you dispute this, I recommend you place a request at Wikipedia:Files for discussion to discuss its status. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 18:57, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

@Hammersoft: Just to explain my reason for doing it. I've seen other Logo's that are covered by UK copyright tagged as PD text and then moved to Commons. Commons then apply their threshold standards to it ("Red XN for most logos. The level of originality required for copyright protection in the United Kingdom is very low.") and the logo gets deleted.
Do you have any objection to adding {{Do not move to Commons|reason=USonly}} to the logo? - X201 (talk) 19:37, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
  • None at all. I thought about mentioning that before, but didn't, alas. --Hammersoft (talk) 19:38, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Sorry for the edit war

AWB Infobox album massive change problems

I have a large watchlist and have been seeing your edits for the past half hour. Overall, thanks, but I'll use this edit to explain the problem. You'll notice that this is not a live album. The lede indicates that it's the "debut studio album" of the band. So far so good. The problem is that the type parameter is ep. An EP could be either a live recording or a studio recording, so that makes this a bit more difficult. The problem is you're adding both studio and venue. Only one or the other has to be supplied. It's not causing problems with the way that the template is being parsed because neither parameter is populated. At least it's not now. And that's the underlying problem. As editors, we have elected to not display specific parameters, usually genre but this applies to others as well, because they have encouraged unconstructive editing and edit warring. (See WP:GWAR for a generally accepted essay outlining problems around genre warring).

So what I'm requesting is make the application of parameters conditional on whether the parameter already existed or not. You seem to have done that already with the prev_title and prev_year parameters, and I assume you've done it with the same values with next_* as well. Thanks for your work on this.

BTW: You did warn Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums about this or make a general comment at a town pump somewhere, right? While I like the changes, other editors may not take kindly to mass changes like this without prior discussion. Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:21, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

I've fixed the venue/studio thing, I was putting them there because the template instructions list them as the base fields. Although it looks like a unilateral action on my part, what I'm actually doing is cleaning up the 4500 articles with template errors that exist, before the consensus to change all the field names to lowercase is actioned en masse.
As I've been editing I've noticed a number of things lurking behind the scenes in articles, one of them being the number of genres (and notes) in the genre section. I'm going to extract the data see if there is a consistent problem with that field. Another one is the lack of use of studio, if present, it's usually bundled into the recorded field, so a job to separate the date and the studio looks on the cards.
Do we need a live_ep type to distinguish them from live albums? - X201 (talk) 20:57, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
No, that seems unnecessary: we could have compilation EPs or video remix albums or all kinds of arcane intersections of album types. Unfortunately, this one field attempts to describe both content and form at the same time. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 08:30, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

You've also made at least one formatting error on Set Me Free (Jennifer Knapp album). Note that before you edited, the last album section displayed correctly but afterward it is rendered in bold with a trailing apostrophe. It's an easy fix but I am about to go to sleep and don't have time at the moment to help with any others that may be malformed. Please look over your edits and {{ping}} me if you need help. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 08:24, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

Album infobox

You added "other" to "Type" at Twogether (John Hicks and Frank Morgan album), with the edit summary "it can't be left blank, it causes errors - use the 'other' category for things that don't fit anywhere else", but that has caused an error. The infobox now displays "Category:Album types by John Hicks, Frank Morgan". EddieHugh (talk) 17:51, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Fixed. Sorry about that. It was a error in a template that was nested a couple of layers down. - X201 (talk) 18:21, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
Not quite, unfortunately. It reads "Recoding", which should be (typo) "Recording" I imagine. EddieHugh (talk) 22:33, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Edge

Hi there. I'm trying to track down the reviews for the original Resident Evil game plus Resident evil: Director's Cut that appear in Edge magazine issues 33 and 52 respectively. I note the reference library says you have a complete collection of the magazine. Specifically I'm looking for any kind of coverage of the character Jill Valentine, so if you do have the articles and they don't mention her at all save yourself the trouble and don't bother scanning or photographing them, just let me know. I'd be really grateful if you could help me out, and would happily review something in return for you if you'd like. Have a nice day. Freikorp (talk) 00:49, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi X201. Just following this up. If you don't have the issues just let me know and I'll start looking for them elsewhere. I've been asked to find all the Edge reviews of the original Resident Evil game at the Jill Valentine FAC (See 'Comment from bridies' section) so it would be a really big help if I could get a hold of them. I won't bother you about this a third time if I don't hear back from you. Let me know if I can help you with any project you are working on in return. Cheers. Freikorp (talk) 10:17, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
Sorry about the delay, dragging the magazines out of their normal home requires a bit of effort. I'll email the first one in a bit. - X201 (talk) 13:55, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
I can imagine digging them up is a pain. Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. Freikorp (talk) 23:37, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

Deletion discussion about The Occupation

Hello, X201,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether The Occupation should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Occupation .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

At Template:Use dmy dates it states:

However, it is common practice for archive and access dates to use the alternative ymd format. This usage is valid and is specifically mentioned at MOSDATE. In those cases, the archive and access date formats should not be altered when fixing dates.

I have not corrected your edits as I did not wish to deny you the opportunity of fixing up the mess you have created. 74.205.219.218 (talk) 16:59, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

There's no mess, the dates are correct and none are corrupt. You've quoted a paragraph from a template instruction document, that portion was added in 2014 by an anonymous user that only made four edits. It is an outdated piece of text, if you read the Wikipedia Manual of Style, specifically MOS:DATEUNIFY you'll see that it is now preferable to for all dates to use the same format " it is permissible to normalize publication dates to the article body text date format, and/or access/archive dates to either, with date consistency being preferred.". I'll raise the point about the incorrect template text. - X201 (talk) 18:52, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

If you are interested in helping with this project, please see Wikipedia:Linter. There are also some basic instructions (and links to even more information) at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2018-April/001836.html You can also leave a note at WT:Linter if you have questions.

Thank you for all the good things you do for the English Wikipedia. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

OK. It was the 'Wall-O-Ref' in the lead that tipped me over the edge. - X201 (talk) 14:33, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
Moving refs out of lede to body is 100% acceptable per WP:LEDECITE, though they'd still be inline citations and not list-define. It's just the change between inline and list-define that is generally frowned upon. --Masem (t) 15:19, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

I have undone one edit. @Cognissonance: undid your first edit, I undid the second and @Ferret: undid the third. Why? Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Hi X201, in S08E01, JP introduces himself as "I'm JP Hooper, Jean-Pierre" to Florence's boy-friend (later fiancé). So, there actually is a source for the edit the anonymous user made. But: this is the only line in the hole show where JP's full name is mentioned. So I think we should leave it "JP". Maybe we could mention the full name in a footnote. How do you think about this? --Gwadainfo (talk) 13:31, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Infobox song subtemplate types

Hello: Just a quick reminder – {{Infobox song}} subtemplates, such as {{Extra track listing}}, {{Extra chronology}}, {{Extra album cover}}, {{Audio sample}}, {{External music video}}, etc., should use the same |type= as that in the infobox song type= (see the documentation for those subtemplates). This way, the entire infobox will be one color, rather than a mix of colors. Also, if a song or single is taken from an EP, the name of the EP should be entered in the |EP= field, rather than |album=, e.g., EP = NAME, rather than album = NAME (EP). —Ojorojo (talk) 13:54, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

@Ojorojo: I know about that rule and what I'm doing is part of fixing it in the long term. Currently I'm using AWB to remove the defunct fields and also correct the entry in the type field. The type fields in the infoboxes are totally inconsistent. e.g. The type field in Infobox Song should contain one of nine valid entries, there are actually well over 50 variations in use at the moment and Infobox Album is even worse. AWB is currently programmed to do an 'as is' replacement on the type field e.g When it finds Song change it to song or when it finds [[Promotional Single]] change it to promo. When that lot is cleaned up it will make finding the mismatching sub-templates easier and I can generate a list and automate the clean-up if it would help. - X201 (talk) 14:35, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation, I thought it might be an auto-type function. How about removing the empty {{Extra track listing}} when there is no entry in the subtemplate |tracks= field? —Ojorojo (talk) 14:48, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
Shhhh! That's the top secret stage 2. :) I prefer to keep AWB doing a handful of tasks that I can keep track of, rather than doing everything all at once and missing or causing other errors. - X201 (talk) 15:11, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
@Ojorojo:  Done Category:Pages using extra track listing with no tracks - X201 (talk) 07:21, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for all your infobox cleanup work. I saw this and wondered how to find other improper uses of extra track listing (not a majority of the album's songs are linked to WP articles, mismatched types, etc.) are out there? —Ojorojo (talk) 15:52, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

@Ojorojo:The only way is to extract the template values and compare them. So I did. I put the results in your userspace at User:Ojorojo/Type mismatch. Hope that's OK. - X201 (talk) 07:18, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks. Wow, more than I imagined. I'll work on them as I go along. Hope that this will not conflict with/duplicate something you're doing/planning. —Ojorojo (talk) 13:47, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
Don't forget, there are the other "Extra" templates too. That list is only the Extra Track Listing. Editing articles on that list won't interfere with anything I'm doing, it helped me find some of the missing promo types. - X201 (talk) 14:14, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
When I see one problem, I usually update the whole infobox, which is why it takes me so freakin' long to get through a list! —Ojorojo (talk) 14:48, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
Surgical strike :) - X201 (talk) 08:51, 22 May 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I think I'll focus on removing those that don't have a majority linked and those that already have a navbox at the bottom of the page. Couldn't the rest be done by a bot? (change the type in any subtemplates to that in the main Template:Infobox song). —Ojorojo (talk) 18:13, 22 May 2019 (UTC)
Looks like it could. Would only work for articles where infobox song has a type value, i.e. It won't work where infobox song type is empty. - X201 (talk) 11:51, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
I can add a request at WP:BOTREQ. It would be even better if the bot could make all subtemplates |type= (not just Extra track listing) conform to the main infobox song type. At the end, a list of infobox songs with blank or missing |type= that also have subtemplates with something other than type=song could be generated for manual cleanup. Since you have more experience in this area and can speak the lingo, maybe you can take the lead. —Ojorojo (talk) 14:32, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
I'll do them with AWB. I wrote that test code this morning to see if an idea I'd had would work. - X201 (talk) 14:41, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

That's great. In going through the mismatch list, I spotted a few problems: The subtemplates use Template:Infobox album/color#Quick reference table (IA) for |type=, while Template:Infobox song#type (IS) has its own:

  • IA has no promo, composition, instrumental, hymn, nursery (using these will produce a peach color, while IS produces light blue; however, IA type blank produces a darker blue)
  • IA demo produces a darker shade of blue than IS demo
  • IA remix produces a dark green, but IS uses light blue
  • IA other produces peach, but IS uses light blue

This could be fixed with an instruction on the documentation pages for the subtemplates advising to always use |type=song for all IS types, except single. But this would mean that the types wouldn't always match, although the colors would. —Ojorojo (talk) 19:30, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

I went through the subtemple pages again and mostly only two choices are given for Infobox song |type=: single and song (both are recognized in Infobox album/color). I'll clarify the language where needed, so nothing else needs to be changed. So when you run your bot, there should be only two choices: 1) match single to single and 2) song to everything else (including blank & missing). —Ojorojo (talk) 15:27, 25 May 2019 (UTC)
I don't know if you're still working on this, but I've finished with those listed on User:Ojorojo/Type mismatch which don't have a majority linked or already have a navbox at the bottom (indicated with a strike out). The rest just need to have the {{Extra track listing}} |type=single added to match the |type=single in the {{Infobox song}}. For all other infobox types (and missing types), the Extra track listings should be set to |type=song for a light blue color. —Ojorojo (talk) 19:06, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

PetScan

Thanks for showing me this tool. Could it be used to find links to pages in subcategory of Category:Wikipedia essays from ns:0 ? –xenotalk 23:45, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

Yes.
  1. Open a fresh PetScan page. Put Wikipedia essays (without the Category: bit) in the Categories box,
  2. Then increase the 'Depth counter for the level of category checking you want e.g. 0 = No sub categories (i.e. only look in the parent Category) 1 = include sub-categories, 2 = include sub-sub-categories, 3 = sub-sub-sub-categories etc
  3. Then Click the Page properties tab and select the namespace (0/Arictle/Main is selected as default)
  4. Press the "Do it" button.
Watch out for sub-cats looping through one another and bringing back incorrect results. Hope that helps.- X201 (talk) 07:48, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
@Xeno:Forgot to ping the above. - X201 (talk) 07:49, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
Hmm, so I think that would find articles in the category. The desired query would find cross-namespace links from article space into Wikipedia space (filtered to pages identified by a category). –xenotalk 12:27, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
Petscan isn't that smart. You want a SQL query. --Izno (talk) 18:49, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Flatmates.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Flatmates.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 12:04, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Courtesy notice: I nominated Mike Verdu for G5 deletion from an ongoing RfC at WP:AN. Your addition of an infobox [3] could be considered substantial, so if you object to my nomination, I understand. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:20, 11 July 2020 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:Articles using Video game reviews template in single platform mode requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Hi. I wanted to let you know that this edit did not clean up a duplicate template argument, as the edit summary suggests. I put that argument in place because it repairs a link to a disambiguation page (you can check for yourself that without that argument it links to the disambiguation page Alabama State Route 11 instead of the intended target U.S. Route 11 in Alabama). I'm not sure why the script you're using thought it was duplicate, but be careful with that. Thanks! Lennart97 (talk) 23:00, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

@Lennart97:Your revert has actually reintroduced the error (click Edit and use the Preview button and look at the warning text in the yellow box). There are hundreds of errors like this that are added to Wikipedia on a minute-by-minute basis. Obviously the small team of volunteers who fix this never ending wave can't be experts on every subject, I checked the article before your entry and it was error free. So I removed your edit because it was the one introducing the error.
You have added a second previous_type field to the Al browse sub template. While you get to see what you want to see on the page, this is only because the first occurrence of previous_type is being overwritten by the second, causing an error in the process.
The error is nothing to do with the script. The error is Wikipedia itself telling you that you have added duplicate parameters, the script merely helps locate potential causes of the error in what can sometimes be a wall of source code. Please help lighten the load and use the Preview button when editing templates. Thanks. - X201 (talk) 08:46, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
