WMF Labs crop tool[edit]

Is the WMF Labs "crop tool" currently down?

I've enabled the "Crop Tool" gadget in my Commons preferences, so I get a link to it in my Commons toolbox, but that's not working, so I went to the basic link for the tool, https://tools.wmflabs.org/croptool, but that's not working either. The result is similar to what I get if I view this page with &uselang=qqx — I see all the MediaWiki message names instead of seeing the transcluded messages themselves, and the page itself continues attempting to load indefinitely without ever getting anywhere. Daylen, would you mind cropping the Flanary image so that it excludes the reflective post in the right foreground and the telephone pole to the left? Please do a lossless cropping with the same ratio. Using IE, I'm still getting nothing beyond the message names and an indefinitely loading page. Using Firefox, I was able to crop the Huddleston House image, but then when I tried to do Flanary, it gave me everything the same as in IE. Nyttend (talk) 23:05, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I use Microsoft Edge; however, I have also used the tool on the latest versions of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Today, the tool did not work on Edge. The tool is maintained by an independent developer, not the Wikimedia Foundation, so occasional outages sometimes happen. Daylen (talk)

Can't Upload Photo[edit]

Hi!

I am trying to upload a new photo for a page I'm working on (Peter John Webster) and it keeps rejecting it citing copyright questions. I received the photo of him from his company and it is just a simple snapshot and they granted permission for me to use. How can I upload this? I believe they sent a screenshot of the actual image - is this the problem? Do I need the original file?

Jilldiamond1234, do you have permission from his company in writing, and does that permission specifically say that anyone may use the photo, for any purpose, including commercial use? Our copyright standards don't accept photos if there's permission only for use on Wikipedia or permission only for non-commercial use, and based on your description, I'm guessing that one or the other of those is what's tripping you up. But please conform closely to the permission you were given — since you didn't take the photo yourself, you'll need to prove the permission. Please forward the permissions email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (if it wasn't sent by email, please figure out how to send it, or come back here and someone will help you figure it out) and specify the filename of the image. You'll have to upload the image first; go to Special:Upload and fill out the description page manually; since it's your first time, you can be simple. Just write a quick description of the image, specify where you got it, mention the license that the company granted (again, come here for help with that if the licenses page isn't completely clear to you), and finally copy/paste the code {{OTRS pending}} onto the page. But again, if they didn't mention a specific license, or if they didn't grant it under some really basic terms (the most common ones are "this file may be used for any purpose, as long as our company is attributed as the author", or "this file is released into the public domain"), please don't upload it at all. My edits appear when logged in but not when logged out[edit]

Hello,

I am a registered user. When I made 2 changes to a Wikipedia article page today they appeared in my browser (Firefox 52) when logged in, but when I loaded the article page when not logged in the older version only appeared. I cleared the browser cache but that made no difference.

Hi Nobosses, have you tried purging the server cache? Purging your browser won't fix the problem if it's the server that needs a purge. I remember reading somewhere that logged in users are sometimes served from "fresher" caches than IPs. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 07:31, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sudarshan Venu - Noindex tag to be removed[edit]

Dear Wikipedia Team,

As we want TVS Motor JMD's (Sudarshan Venu) Wiki Profile Page to be shown up in Search Results, I request you to remove the noindex tag (<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow"/>) from this page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudarshan_Venu?oldformat=true) at the earliest.

@Hemalatha1010: noindex will automatically be removed 24 July, 90 days after the article was created 25 April. It may be removed earlier if an editor with the right permission reviews the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:17, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the quick answer! But I just wanted to clarify that it was live (I mean without noindex tag) for few days before a couple of weeks before. And you have mentioned, "an editor with the right permission's review can make the page live soon". What does this mean? whom we are supposed to contact to review this.

@Hemalatha1010: The general waiting period before automatically removing noindex was increased from 30 days to 90 days in June. Before that there was a period where it was indexed because it was more than 30 days old. There is no request process and you are not supposed to do anything. It happens when it happens. It has been indexed by our own search engine since it was created. Quick indexing by external search engines is not a priority to us. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:21, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hemalatha, as it stands, the article (not profile!) Sudarshan Venu is unsatisfactory, and should not be indexed, because it has no independent references whatever. Please understand that Wikipedia has essentially no interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say. It is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject have published about it. Unless that article is improved with some reliable independent references, and trimmed to contain only information from those references, it is liable to be deleted.
I am also concerned by your use of "we". Who are "we"? If multiple people are using the same account, this is contrary to Wikipedia's policies. If "we" means TVS, and you are connected with Venu, then you must read about why your conflict of interest will make it very difficult for you to write an acceptable article about him. --ColinFine (talk) 22:02, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@ ColineFine I am part of the extended team of TVS marketing but not the author of the article, and my interest was to know if the article will show up in Google Search Results and hence made the request.

Draft version with Categories[edit]

The creator of Draft:Sivan Rahav-Meir/Beni92 added the page to four categories. What's the editing syntax to keep the content from displaying on the page and appearing in those categories, but still to appear in edit version? -- Deborahjay (talk) 08:29, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I did that - but the text still appears on the draft page. Is that negligible? I was thinking of that syntax with the exclamation point and hyphens (?) so the text only shows in editing but not in page preview mode. -- Deborahjay (talk) 09:31, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the cats will still appear on the draft page but in a line towards the bottom of the text, not in the normal category positions. To 'copy out' use <!--XXXXXXXXXX-->. For drafts in the AFC system the colon method is preferred because the when the review tool is used to accept the draft into mainspace it automatically removes the colons thus "activating" the categories. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:04, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

US National Security Council Special Assistant to The President and Senior Director for Counterterrorism[edit]

The Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Counterterrorism is Christopher P. Costa. He has held this position since inauguration day. For some reason this is not listed on the updated National Security Council Page. article about Kate Moore Composer[edit]

Dear Wikipedia, It has come to my attention that there is an article published about Kate Moore composer which is a stub. It is incomplete and presents a wrong slant on her work. Please can this either be a more developed and accurate article or can it be removed. The subject of contention is this long list of composers who she has supposedly studied with which is inaccurate. It is true that she studied with Larry Sitsky, Jim Cotter and The Australian National University (Canberra School of Music) Louis Andriessen, Martijn Padding, Gilius van Bergeijk, Diderik Waagenaar at the Koninklijk Conservatorium of Music and Michael Smetanin at the University of Sydney, Sydney Conservatorium of Music and some other people. It is not true that she studied with Julia Wolfe, David Lang and Michael Gordon. She only attended The Bang on a Can Summer School in 2007 as many of her colleagues have done. Every composer has studied with many people and it's weird that this article lists all these people without including any of her real work or work relevant to her. Her works are published by Donemus and archived by The Australian Music Centre for more accurate information. Recently she was the recipient of the most prestigious Dutch prize for composition The Matthijs Vermeulen award and she is the first woman to have done so. Please update this article. The article is a stub and definitely should be expanded. The info on Wolfe, Lang and Gordon is referenced to the information about her at the bottom of https://www.icareifyoulisten.com/2011/12/5-questions-to-kate-moore-composer/ . Creating an article with a lower-case title[edit]

Might someone be so kind as to advise on how to create a page with no capitalization in the title? I've got both an author and a book title I'd like to write about which are entirely stylized as lower case (à la bell hooks), but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to title especially the first letter of the page creation in lower case. I see that for instance the eBay page uses the "Lowercase title" template to make the page name appear formatted correctly, but the bell hooks page seems not to require it/is just properly formatted from the start, and I'm wondering how that was accomplished. Typically I start pages by typing the name I want into the search bar and then following red link that produces, but that keeps generating a page with the first letter capitalized (or at least so it appears on the draft; I haven't clicked save yet, lest it come out wrong). Innisfree987, as far as I'm aware, there is no other way than emulating eBay. For bell hooks, just edit the whole page and Ctrl+F for {{display — this appears to work in a way similar to {{lowercase title}} on EBay. Someone just put the display template near the bottom of the page, rather than near the top as on eBay. See WP:NCLOWERCASEFIRST for more information. Nyttend (talk) 23:15, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, WP:DISPLAYTITLE is the only way and it only affects the display at top of the page itself, not categories, search results and so on. {{Lowercase title}} and all similar templates work by using DISPLAYTITLE. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:17, 7 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
