Global change of "ARM" to "Arm"

In light of anonymous editor 217.140.96.140's change of "ARM" to "Arm" in the middle of December 2017 (also breaking some links in the process), must every instance of "ARM" now be replaced with "Arm" on all of Wikipedia (only in appropriate places, of course), or not?

The history of Arm Holdings says:

On 1 August 2017 the styling and logo were changed. The logo is now all lowercase and other uses of 'ARM' are in sentence case except where the whole sentence is upper case, so, for instance, it is now 'Arm Holdings'.

It would be easier if it was just the company that changed name.

Highlighted edits?

Special:NewPages

Special:NewPages contains the text: "A preference option that hides patrolled new pages by default is available at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rc.". I can't seem to find it though. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 01:39, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

• Hi The Quixotic Potato, it's there under "Advanced options" as below:

1. Group changes by page in recent changes and watchlist
2. Hide minor edits from recent changes
3. Hide categorization of pages
4. Hide patrolled pages from new page list
5. Show Wikidata edits by default in recent changes

Alternatively, you could consider using the PageCuration script or the Special New Pages script, which provide the same filters, and more. Thanks, Lourdes 04:04, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

I see it in my admin account but not my alternative non-admin account so I guess the option is only present for users with the patrol user right. Lourdes has it as a New Page Reviewer. I also noticed the yellow highlight mentioned at top of Special:NewPages is only seen in my admin account. It seems MediaWiki:Newpages-summary should be modified to account for these differences. Yes, The Quixotic Potato, it's quite deliberate that the yellow highlighting is only visible to admins and accredited Reviewers. The description of the highlighting should also be made invisible in order to avoid people thinking it's a bug. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:46, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

Blacklisted URL

Resolved

I had been using a link to a pdf article as citation in my a articles on Tamil films.

This has been used in numerous articles for the past one year or so. Now I find that this link URL is blacklisted and a web has placed a notification to that effect in many articles. It will be a tiring job to replace the link in individual articles.

Is it possible to do "replace ..... with ...."

Editing in Ur

I would regretfully like to inform you that one of your moderators, Shellwood, is threatening to ban editing for me when I made a minor edit on the page 'Ur' to correct wrong information. The first time he did this I reached out to him to show him my source of information which corrected his mistake but this cycle continued and now I am at the stage where if I 'vandalize' Wikipedia one more time, I will be banned from editing. I am sad because I love Wikipedia and this is the first time I have witnessed something like this. Please fix this issue as I just wanted to help the creator with the page.

I don't want to get caught up in this but I thought I'd point out that neither of your sources seem to be reliable in the way that Wikipedia needs. See WP:BLOGSOURCE.

Additionally, both sides of this argument seem to leave a bit to be desired as far as communication goes.

Firstly, for you Crazypig129. You did not cite your sources when you first made your edit to the Ur article. What you did is similar to walking into a room. Making a statement that goes against what everyone in the room accepts to be true. And then walking out. You left no evidence initially of what sources you were using to make such a claim. It wasn't until you had the edit reverted a couple times before you started leaving your sources in the edit summary which is also non-standard.

Secondly, for Shellwood. I don't see where you explained to Crazypig what they were doing except to give them warning after warning. Even when they showed their sources in the edit summaries, you didn't explain with something along the lines of "...those are blogs and are unacceptable sources per WP:BLOGSOURCE...".

The way I see it now, you both have caught up no less than 5 editors in this issue, not including yourselves. The two editors who reverted edits on Crazypigs' talk page, his/her Quixotic Potatoness, whoever else had to read this question here, and myself. So. Stop it! Just talk. Teach. My tuppenceworth: having recently finished reading a comprehensive history of Mesopotamia (by Gwendolyn Leick – deserves her own article, I would say – published by Allan Lane in 2001), I find the suggestion that "Ur was in Iran" somewhat bizarre. I have carefully read both of the sources linked by Crazypig129, and I am confident that neither of them makes any suggestion that this was so: there has evidently been a misreading of them.

Of course, parts or all of the Mesopotamian region were, for some shorter or longer periods in its 8,000-plus year history, conquered and ruled over by the Elamites, Medes, Persians or Parthians from what are now regions of Iran, as it was by various other geographically-originated ethnicities from time to time. For equal or longer periods it was ruled by various more local (to Mesopotamia) ethnicities, or by others from neither area, such as the Macedonians and/or Greeks. The second source does suggest that Abraham lived in the period when Ur (and of course other parts of Mesopotamia) had been conquered and occupied by the Elamites, who indeed came from a region now within modern Iran, but this doesn't mean "Ur was in Iran" any more than, say, Paris was in Germany in 1943.

... was a message I received today (for whatever reason)! As I didn't see any pertinent request This must have been done by one of the CUs that can perform checks at discretion, right? But why can't I see that message in my notifications anymore? I can look at anything else but not at that one! I haven't heard of such a message or found anything by searching. I examined all messages at Special:AllMessages. I'm not aware of CheckUser actions causing a message to the user. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:01, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, that's not from a local CU check. If you can't see the notification anymore then you might want to check your messages on German Wikipedia or Metawiki, or perhaps some other wiki. AFAIK "message from another wiki" notifications are not retained. -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 16:12, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

How to cite a book

Hello,

I would like to know how to cite a hard-copy book as a reference in a Wikipedia article I am writing. I would like the citation to follow the Wikipedia footnote format such that the book appears in the references section along with all the websites I used in writing the article.

How to act in regard of copyright violation on bad maintained wiki pages (certain languages)?

Is there any way to act in a way that violating text might be removed, if a certain language page is bad maintained and no responsible editors or admins react? It's a over 50 books of text on many pages issue, so not just a small issue. Thanks in advanced for support on that issue.--203.144.92.81 (talk) 16:36, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

If the problem is on a page on English Wikipedia, then please follow this guidance, or if you prefer just reply here and tell us which page it is and the exact problem you see. Bold face for block elements / Misalignment of poem columns

Hello, Bypass Filter. Since you have successfully uploaded the new image to Commons as File:Eliza McCartney London 2017.jpg, all you need to do is replace the line

| image = Eliza McCartney.jpg

by

| image = Eliza McCartney London 2017.jpg

Italics in hatnote

I just added the following hatnote to Mrs. Claus:

This page is about the fictional character. For the film, see Mrs. Santa Claus.

It works fine, and there are no real problems. However, since "Mrs. Santa Claus" is the name of a movie, it should be italicized. I know I've seen this done, but I can't remember how to do it. Putting the italics in the final parameter doesn't work:

This page is about the fictional character. For the film, see ''Mrs. Santa Claus''.

I can put italics around the whole hatnote,

This page is about the fictional character. For the film, see Mrs. Santa Claus.

but of course this makes the whole thing unitalicized, which isn't right. I can also put italics after "film" and then at the end of the hatnote
