Problematic category

The question has come up whether Bobby Fischer should be in Category:Jewish chess players. There has been some discussion of this at Talk:Bobby Fischer#Category:Jewish_chess_players, and I venture to say that we have not come to a conclusion. The circumstances are that he was born to a Jewish mother, but he explicitly rejected Judaism in adulthood. I wonder if there are general rules that can be followed with categories that are potentially problematic in this way. (I also wonder if the Help Desk is the most appropriate place for me to ask about this. If there is a better place, I'd be happy to go there.) Bruce leverett (talk) 02:24, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi @Bruce leverett: Where it was being discussed (on the talk page of the article) is the best place, since each individual subject will have different rationale for the categories. Since you brought it up, though, I'll weigh in there. Orville1974^talk 03:53, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

@Arnabsaha2212: you have still not provided a link to whatever "BS-map" is, and I am confused (my usual state, I admit). Apparently, you have a map somewhere named "BS-map", and you wish to convert it into a something named "Routemap" that is similar to Template:VIP Road, presumably to add to some article named ????. @Arnabsaha2212:OK. You created {{VIP Road}}, and it uses {{BS-map}}, but you now wish to use {{Routemap}} instead. That is a fairly specialized area of expertise. I recommend you ask on the talk page of Template:Routemap, which is at Template talk:Routemap. If no answer after a day or so, ping some of the original creators of Template:Routemap, but remember that some editors take a break in the summer. -Arch dude (talk) 17:04, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Can I download this?

@Webseon: this requires multiple answers. First: it follows the legal and technical rules for Commons, as it was uploaded by its creator under an appropriate license. This means that you may download, modify, and upload it under that license, and you may use it for any Wikipedia or non-Wikipedia purpose whatsoever if you attribute it. Second: it appears that you may be working on creating an article to use this image in. If so, that article is likely to be deleted. There is really only one requirement for an article: the subject must be notable by our definition. If the subject is notable, we can help you raise its quality. If the subject is not notable, we will delete it, even if it is the most beautiful article that has ever existed on Wikipedia in all other respects. @Webseon: As a separate issue, If you are creating a new logo for any Wikipedia or non-Wikipedia reason, you should use a scalable format such as SVG instead of a bitmap format like PNG, because SVG remains pretty at all scales while PNG gets ugly if you expand or shrink it. Furthermore, The Pillintrip logo has essentially no "creative elements", so if you change the words and colors, You are free to claim that your new logo is your own work and you will not need to attribute it to the Pillintrip logo, unless you feel that the result really is visually similar to that logo. Note that trademark is separate from copyright and that laws and interpretations vary by jurisdiction.-Arch dude (talk) 16:46, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

@Captain Yoshi: A title change is accomplished with a page move, but before you get that far, I think you need to read Your First Article and use the new user tutorial, as I'm not sure that you understand what subjects merit articles on Wikipedia; Wikipedia is not a game guide. 331dot (talk) 15:06, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

@Captain Yoshi:As I said, changing the title of a page is accomplished with a page move, regardless of how you are editing or on what device. You can request a page move at Requested Moves, but as I said, your draft is not suitable as a Wikipedia article. 331dot (talk) 15:37, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Website parameter in citations

So, I was previously citing websites like this in the website paremeter part of the cite template; if the URL was billboard.com, I put Billboard. I was looking at someone else's edits and realized that they were just repeating the website URL (and assumed that this was the correct way to do things). I went to fix a whole bunch of my references that way in this diff. Now I'm just confused about whether or not I was fixing anything, as I've seen both ways used and I'm not sure which method (or something else I haven't being doing) is correct. Hello, Clovermoss. The place to look for things like this is the Template itself: in this case Template:Cite web. If you look there, you will find:

• website: Title of website; may be wikilinked. Displays in italics. Aliases: work

@Clovermoss: I see both types used a lot (ie. bbc.co.uk and BBC). I wouldn’t say it is very important which is used however, as said by ColinFine its probably more user-friendly to use the website name (BBC as opposed to bbc.co.uk). I hope that helps, Willbb234 (talk) 16:56, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Many of those 'things' are periodicals. When en.wiki has an article about the 'thing' it is relatively easy to decide what cs1|2 template and parameter to use for that 'thing':

I don't know about these:

NYS Music – claims it is 'New York's music news source' so {{cite news}} and |work=

Pitchfork – yeah, article title says 'website'; article prose says magazine; sigh, editors there need to straighten that up

The Daily Memphian – online newspaper so {{cite news}} and |newspaper=

I think that it is better to use the periodical's name when that is known. Periodical names are, I think, more easily read and understood than domain names (ajc.com → The Atlanta Journal-Constitution).

Patrick Beurard-Valdoye

While moving a stub page about a living French poet from the sandbox, auto spelling changed the first part of the surname to an incorrect spelling before I was able to stop it. Can someone please help restore the correct spelling of Patrick Beurard-Valdoye from the current incorrect Patrick Beard-Valdoye, before it can be linked to the original French entry? Note: There was an earlier version of this thread where the OP (stating they were Kilgour) raised issues with height / weight at Alfie Kilgour. That request was subsequently removed by them. As the height appears to be 'sourced' to Soccerway here, albeit as an external link. It will need independent reliable sourcing to change it. @Captain Yoshi: In order to have an article about an individual Pokemon, (like Pikachu), there must be significant coverage of it in independent reliable sources like the news which show how the Pokemon is notable. Pikachu merits an article because it is extensively used in films, promotional materials, and other outlets. That isn't the case with all Pokemon. 331dot (talk) 21:03, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Then you should gather at least three independent reliable sources that have coverage of Groudon itself, not just as part of a game. Is Groudon extensively written about as a character? Is it the the featured aspect of a film? Does it get lots of news coverage for being used in advertising? Things like that. 331dot (talk) 21:21, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi @Captain Yoshi: Before you start, please take a look at this draft article on Porygon and its related talk page. Reviewing those will give you a better understanding of how difficult it can be to write an article about an individual Pokemon species. Even with all of the work and effort put into it, the article has still not met the requirements to be published in the mainspace (and most likely never will, because the subject of the article, Porygons, do not meet the the notability guidelines). It wont be that difficult, since Groudon is pretty popular and is seen way more in commercials since it is a legendary. The advice at the Porygon Talk page will help focus your efforts on reliable sources, verifiability, and demonstrating Groudon's notability. If you can find enough significant coverage to meet Wikipedia's standards, you can start drafting your article by following Articles for Creation and Your First Article. Submitting a photo

If anyone can help me, I am just trying to find out if I can add a photo of a wonderful Baculite specimen to the Baculite entry.

The piece, attributed to the Pierre Shale--by a field expert at U.C.'s Museum of Paleontology, seems rare and special because: of it's comparatively colorful, intact mother-of-pearl surface, as well as because it shows signs of having been "worked" and been a spirit/prestige item of a Coastanoan clan. It looks much different than those photos already displayed.

Hello, HBD Bear Area. If you took the picture yourself, so you hold the copyright, then you may upload it to Wikimedia Commons yourself, releasing it under an appropriate licence as you go. IIRC, when you have uploaded it to Commons, it will tell you what you need to do to add it to a Wikipedia article. See Help:Upload.

If it is not your image, then there are copyright questions: unless the copyright holder has already released it under a licence such as CC-BY-SA, you will need to get them to donate it in order to use it in Wikipedia: see donating copyright materials. --ColinFine (talk) 07:55, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Merci, for the help. I'm not blissful about my ignorance. I found the thing in my own back yard and took my own photos. It's nice thing for people to see and I'll share the photo.
