Vandalism help request from Faaafv[edit]

I have noticed some vandalism at [[1]]. Someone is harassing one of the person (boba/bobawitch) in that article by doxxing her — Preceding unsigned comment added by Faaafv (talkcontribs) 01:31, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Faaafv. I am having a little trouble understanding your concern, specifically at where and to whom the doxing is occurring. If the doxxing is directed toward an editor, then you may find information about the matter at wp:out. You might also read about such matters at wp:own or the larger article wp:HA. If there is off wiki doxing that does not regard an editor--but rather regards one who is mentioned in an article--then I am not certain that Wikipedia can address the matter. I appreciate your concern over what is such an unpleasant practice. Most kind regards,Hu Nhu (talk) 06:31, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Userspace page in category[edit]

I have a to-do page, User:Postleft/pages, which for some reason is in Category:Anarchism stubs. I really don’t know why, and am about to go to bed, so if someone could enlighten me when I wake up it would be much appreciated. I hope this is the right venue for this question. :-) Thank you, and cheers, postleft on mobile! 03:30, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Postleftmobile: If you want to make a regular wikilink to a category, you need to add a colon in the beginning of the link like this: [[:Category:Anarchism stubs]]. Without the colon, it adds the page to the category instead. bibliomaniac15 03:34, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ahaha! Thank you very much! postleft on mobile! 14:58, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Attributions in image captions[edit]

Two image captions in Gordon Parks include a credit of the copyright holder, with an external link. I deleted these credits following the guideline at MOS:CREDITS. NOLA Bee has reverted my deletions, with the edit summary "We are working closely with the DC Wiki rep and we have received permission to include the credit line for our images. We have also filed permissions paperwork with Wiki for David Finn images." User:NOLA Bee indicates that they are an employee of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. It is unclear what permission has been given, and whether this should override editorial judgement and the manual of style. What is the best venue to clarify or discuss this? Verbcatcher (talk) 04:01, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be very interested to know who gave them "permission to include the credit line for our images" as that isn't a thing. I'd suggest WP:COIN might be a place to pursue this further. Beeblebrox (talk) 04:04, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently they've been at this for quite some time, across a number of articles. I agree that it's entirely inappropriate; I'm doing some clean up. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 04:28, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@NOLA Bee: I haven't heard of a "DC Wiki rep". Who is it and could they have been referring to the "Captions" field at the file page like commons:File:Gordon Parks next to piano by David Finn.jpg? Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Captions#Credits says: "Unless relevant to the subject, do not credit the image author or copyright holder in the article." PrimeHunter (talk) 05:01, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
My guess is that it's a Wikipedian-in-Residence or another editor serving primarily as an intermediary between GLAMs and the community. This doesn't sound like anything overly sinister, considering a museum is involved here; we as a community do outreach to them regularly. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 05:18, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, it appears to be Ariel Cetrone (WMDC). Pinging them in case they're unaware of this discussion. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 17:56, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Chiming in here to clear some of this up. The external links in the captions were the result of a misunderstanding. In short, the confusion came from conversations about what should be included when uploading images to Commons. Ultimately, a GLAM partner was just trying to be more transparent. I think this is important to remember, especially when dealing with an institution that has the potential to add so much to the encyclopedia. While external linking in captions was not appropriate, it's important to remember that GLAM editors with disclosed affiliations are able to link to their material in some cases (See: COI:GLAM). This, of course, was not one of them.-Ariel Cetrone (WMDC) (talk) 19:19, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Beeblebrox: thank you for the advice, but I feel that the Conflict of interest noticeboard would be too heavy-handed at this stage. I will assume good faith, and that this was the result of a misunderstanding. I am grateful to the NGA for releasing images with free licenses and I do not want to unnecessarily antagonize its staff. Verbcatcher (talk) 05:32, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The images are very nice, but an editor with a declared conflict of interest going around adding in-line hyperlinks to their institution everywhere is... concerning. Anyway, I've cleaned up the most egregious examples; I didn't bother with the ones actually enclosed in ref tags, though they probably aren't legit either. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 05:43, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at one, Gordon Parks next to piano by David Finn. The legitimacy of its upload to or availability from Commons doesn't seem to have been questioned since 3 December. Under "Licensing", we read "Attribution: ©David Finn Archive, Department of Image Collections, National Gallery of Art Library, Washington, DC". This surprises me too; but if you bring the matter up, I think you shouldn't do so here but should instead do so at Village pump/Copyright. -- Hoary (talk) 05:37, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please see c:Commons:Deletion requests/Photographs from the David Finn Archive, where I nominated several images from the same source for deletion. This resulted in two OTRS tickets that confirmed the licenses. I don't know whether the file you have linked comes within the scope of these tickets, but it is reasonable to assume that its license is valid. Verbcatcher (talk) 06:07, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Verbcatcher, I'd (inexpertly) tend to make the same inference. As an example of the files you listed, commons:File:Admiral David Glasgow Farragut by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.jpg also announces "Attribution: ©David Finn Archive, Department of Image Collections, National Gallery of Art Library, Washington, DC". But it says nothing about any requirement for such a textual attribution when the file is used, or about the inadequacy of the normal provision for tracing an image back to its file on Commons (or elsewhere within the Wikimedia galaxy), where the attribution can be read. c:Commons:Deletion requests/Photographs from the David Finn Archive ended with "Kept", not something like "Kept, but with the requirement that [blah blah]". -- Hoary (talk) 08:02, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hoary, in case you're confused by the ©: c:COM:NOTCOPYVIO. Regarding attribution, we must provide that "in any reasonable manner based on the medium" for Creative Commons 4.0 licensed works. As far as I know, seeing the author when clicking the image (which either opens it in the Media Viewer or goes to the file page) has always been considered reasonable. Legal never kicked up a fuss about that either afaik. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 18:35, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to add that my personal statement clearly states that I, NOLA Bee, am part of the GLAM community and my contributions are for educational purposes. The intention was to properly credit the photographs. Sincerely, User:NOLA Bee

asking for donations[edit]

I HAVE donated to Wiki in the past, and I may do so again in future, but I do not appreciate the big begging spiel every time I open another page of it lately! Especially when it starts with something like 'Hi reader, this is only the second time we've interrupted you...' - as if I've forgotten all the other times. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.12.208.1 (talk) 06:09, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome and thank you for your question about donations! To hide the fundraising banners, you can create an account and uncheck Preferences → Banners → uncheck Fundraising. The Wikimedia Foundation does not track the identity of IP addresses, so it doesn't know your age, income level or whether you donated in the past.
None of the Wikipedia volunteer editors here who add and improve content in articles receive any financial benefit. We all simply contribute our time because we care about building a great encyclopedia for you and innumerable others around the world to use.
If you cannot afford it, no one wants you to donate. Wikipedia is not at risk of shutting down, and the Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts the Wikipedia platform and is asking for these donations, is richer than ever.
We are led to believe that users who allow cookies are less likely to see these banners on repeat visits (further information is available here), and you are welcome to communicate directly with the donor-relations team by emailing donate@wikimedia.org. Html table question[edit]

Hi all—how do I keep ! scope=col width="18%" for a row and add colspan="2"? (What would the literal format be of all three things in one line, I mean). Please ping me! Best and thanks in advance to any who can offer assistance. – Aza24 (talk) 07:19, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Content Deleted From the page Sound Symbolism[edit]

Hello, My Content " Pramod Kumar Agrawal (2020)[9] suggests a natural correlation between phonemes and psychological feelings. He presents a model in detail that explains this correlation. With several examples, he suggests that these psychological feelings have added a purposeful impact while words of different languages were getting created."

above was previously mentioned in the Modern phonosemantics topic of sound symbolism

On the 17th of Aug, it was edited and no longer found on the page. What will be the reason for this??Pramod1952 (talk) 07:36, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It was not removed on 17 Aug, as the only edit made that day was by a bot that cleans up/fixes citations. It was actually removed 21 Nov, with no reason given (though given all the content removed I can assume it was because the reverter missed that the content was cited, as almost all the other content removed in that edit lacked citations). —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 07:49, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How do I delete saved searches from Wikipedia?[edit]

I have a saved search term that always pops up below the search bar when I'm about to type something into the site's engine. It's... something rather private, and I don't want people to see it if they ever use Wikipedia on one of my devices. I've cleared my Google account's cookies, browsing history, and cached data, yet the problem persists. How can I delete this search term? Kurtis (talk) 08:01, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Clear it from your browser preferences - not your Google account. (Even in Chrome the browser settings and Google account settings are separate.) —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 11:10, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jéské Couriano: You mean go into settings (via the three dots to the top-right), "Privacy and security", and then "Clear browsing data"? Because that is what I did, and it still shows up. Kurtis (talk) 14:02, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kurtis: If it's just the one search result, you can bring up the autocomplete result in a text field, use the key to navigate to it, and press ⇧ Shift+Delete to get rid of it (as described here). I'm assuming you're using Chrome. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:01, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Tenryuu: I used the Chromebook equivalent of the delete command: ctrl+alt+backspace. Worked like a charm. Thanks a bunch! Kurtis (talk) 17:08, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Matthew Colthup guitarist (Tami Lynn) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tami_Lynn[edit]

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I note that there is no link for myself with regard to my work with Tami Lynn.

Is it possible to make one ? I am a professional guitarist -blues/rock based now in France. I wonder if it may be possible to do this?

Kind regards

Matthew Colthup

Tami Lynn

Lynn lived in New York City for many years,[6] before moving to Florida. In 2014, she performed in concert at New Port Richey, Florida, with guitarist Matthew Colthup.[10][11]213.205.241.62 (talk) 13:30, 16 December 2021 (UTC)Matthew Colthup[reply]

1. Does the source material say that she appeared with you in Port Richey?
2. Do we have an article about you here?
3. Is there any significance to her having appeared with you, to the extent that it is mentioned or discussed in any reliable sources? Because otherwise there's no particular reason for that information to appear in an article about her. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:10, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A couple of points. When I expanded the article about Ms Lynn back in 2019, information about her life was quite patchy and I needed to use what sources I could find, including the mention of the 2014 concert with Matthew Colthup. (The article has since been expanded again, since her death, with more details.) At the time, I did look into who Matthew Colthup was, and concluded that he should not be redlinked as he probably didn't pass the WP:NOTABILITY threshold. I don't know whether that has changed since then - I suspect not. If he is not notable in Wikipedia's terms, there should not be an article about him (simply being a professional musician does not mean that an article should exist here) and given that both the sources listed for the information seem now to be dead, his name could perhaps be removed from her article - though that is not something on which I have a strong view. How to read the original article of what is redirected to another article now?[edit]

How to read the original article of what is redirected to another article now? I want to copy some sentences of the, Sexual slavery in Islam article which is now being redirected to another article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2409:4071:2319:BCAE:6119:AEE7:5FC2:DEF4 (talk) 15:33, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello IP! YOu can do this by simply clicking the "View history" button and then looking for a revision from before the article became a redirect (if it was ever a non-redirect). ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 15:36, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
First click "Redirected from Sexual slavery in Islam" at the top of Sexual slavery in Islam. The page history of the redirect [2] shows the page was moved (renamed) so the page history of the article is at the new title. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:41, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oop yep forgot about that. I was thinking about what you can do if an article is merged and the original is turned into a redirect. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 15:49, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Company logo is incorrect[edit]

I am on the marketing team and I'd like to update the logo being used on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_Computer_Society as it's out of date. I have direct access to the logo files, but when I upload them it asks about the copyright. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ieee-cs-marketing (talkcontribs) 18:37, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You will need to change your username and make a formal declaration first, please review the information I have placed on your user talk page. 331dot (talk) 18:41, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ieee-cs-marketing, please read our policy about paid editing and conflict of interest guideline. Also, link the correct logo and I'll handle it. User has been blocked for a promotional username with promotional edits. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:59, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Blaze The Wolf, Orangemike, I wouldn't call this request here "promotional". (but the username is unacceptable anyway so the block remains valid) — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 19:02, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A username including the word "marketing" is a pretty explicit confession of promotional intent. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:04, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Orangemike, mmmyeah I suppose you could say that, but the request itself (which was their only edit) wasn't what I'd consider "promotional" as they only asked to fix an outdated fact, not add promotional language or anything like that. So I don't think the block reason should state "promotional edits" when none had been made at the time of the block. The username is enough to validate the block, no issues there, they just shouldn't have to apologize for or explain the "promotional edits" claim in case they request a rename/unblock. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 19:23, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
He actually is clumsily requesting an unblock: https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Ieee-cs-marketing&action=history. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 19:32, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Visual editor won't load[edit]

When I go to edit a page, my visual editor loads 75% and then stops. This has been happening on every page and in the Sandbox for a few weeks. I have tried clicking the "edit" tab as well as typing ?veaction=edit in the URL all with the same result. I have also gone to my editing preferences to add both types of editing tabs, so I have "Edit" and "Edit Source." Editing source works with no problem, but Visual Editor still freezes on the load bar. Please assist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KittyHawkFlyer (talkcontribs) 21:03, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

KittyHawkFlyer, while this is definitely not the kind of response you were hoping for, nobody has yet provided a better one, so: I suggest that you take this as Nature's Way to nudge you away from the "visual editor" for good. The "visual editor" is a praiseworthy idea whose implementation is generally agreed to be inadequate. Editing source is the way to go. The process may irritate you from time to time, but you'll soon get used to it, the irritations will evaporate, and you will no longer miss the "visual editor". -- Hoary (talk) 23:17, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The VE is a great tool for 90% of the editing I do - and I spent my first 5 years of editing doing everything in wikitext, so I know what I'm missing (and what I don't miss). Hope you find a fix, Kitty. Popcornfud (talk) 23:47, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@KittyHawkFlyer: Perhaps WP:VPT can give you a better answer, but have you tried clearing your browser's cache and seeing if that resolves the issue? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:50, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Try a method at Wikipedia:Bypass your cache like Ctrl+F5, not F5 or a browser click alone. Does it work if you log out? Does this link work? What is your browser? What is your skin at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? PrimeHunter (talk) 23:53, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
