Adding communities from FIC directory to Wikipedia

I'd like to propose adding a new project goal of systematically adding the communities listed in the Fellowship of Intentional Community's directory to wikipedia. The directory already includes vital stats from each community and some may also have their own web pages.

This proposal seems to fall within the scope of the community project. I think it would also us a concrete goal to sink our teeth into. Most of the project goals right now are fairly abstract and its hard to know where to start. When adding communities from the directory it would simply be a matter of starting our way at the top of the list of communities and working down.

Finally, I think this would be a good way of raising the visibility of the Community project. We could promote this specific sub-project on like minded projects and forums. And if everyone referenced the community project in comments when editing pages we'd start showing up on the recent changes list as well. Activity usually attracts more activity. Just as no visible activity in a project reinforces that inactivity.

I'm open to feedback on this idea. The next step in moving forward would be to add it to the community project list of goals and then to see about automatically generating a list like those used in Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles. Indeed, but the FIC directory is HUGE! I noticed we now have an article on the Fellowship for Intentional Community and have included a link to their site on Portal:Community/Web resources. A list of ecovillages exists, but if there is a list of other intentional communities, I'm not aware of it. Building Community

m:The Wikipedia Community is in my opinion among the cream of the crop in online communities. The fact that it functions as a Community of practice with a focused task - building an encyclopedia - remains an organizing force that few web-enabled groups have. While Jimbo Wales and the Wikimedia Foundation have set up a strong central authority to assure the continuation of the project through some formal structures, there is still much room and freedom for organizing within the ranks of the community. This WikiProject is one of many grassroots efforts to tighten the fabric in a somwhat scientific and intentional way.

I'm proposing to develop a very comprehensive portal and categorization scheme to implement this from a taskforce perspective - seperate from, but completely aware of and complient with - the official channels and vehicles provided by our hosts through the Community Portal.

It is very important to differentiate Portal:Community, which is to become a reference for community builders everywhere, from the Wikipedia:Community Portal which is expressly for Wikipedians. This little project space is here to help us focus on what Wikipedia - the encyclopedia has to say about community and to study and improve how Wikipedia - the community performs.

Talkpage templates

On the project page for this WikiProject, there's a link to {{Template:WikiProjectNotice|Community}} which causes it to show up on Category:Main pages with misplaced talk page templates. Would it bother anyone if I put a subst'd version of the talk page version of the template on the main page, so it no longer shows up in that category? Thanks. :)

Comments

I'm finding that I'm quite busy with other things, and am only slowly getting my head around what the Community Builders TaskForce is doing... though I do like the user categorization mentioned above, and the whole idea of strengthening the community, including helping people collaborate with others of similar interest.

I'm wondering if we should separate the project focusing on community-related articles in sociology (e.g. co-housing) from the project aiming to strengthen community & cooperation in Wikipedia.

So I'll leave my name here, but just consider me a peripheral member - I'll check in and contribute from time to time. Feel free to ask for my input if there's a specific issue. --Singkong2005 talk 06:12, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

What kind of help do you need? I'm not an official member of the 1.0 Ed team but I've helped other projects set up categories and templates to do rating. I take it you want to rate your articles? Take a look at Beatles, Firefly, Indigenous Peoples of North America or any of the other projects to see how to set things up, it's not hard. But with only 4 articles you can just create the categories and add the articles by hand if you want. ++Lar: t/c 23:12, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

OK, I added in the parameters for your "top-level" article, Community with this edit. Since it is the lead article for the project, it is also automatically top level in importance. After that you need simply to create the relevant categories for the bot to read, as follows:
  1. Create a category called Category:Community articles by quality, and place this in Category:Wikipedia_1.0_assessments (You've done that already)
  2. Tag a few article talk pages with the template, ideally using articles at every level of the assessment scale - FA, A, GA, B, Start and Stub, and also an NA (not assessed). Click on the categories created by the template, and place all of these into the category you made before, Category:Community articles by quality. (If you don't have any FAs etc, just create the empty categories ready for when you do).
  3. If you want to do importance too (it seems you do), then do the same as you did with quality, only place these in the category Category:Community articles by importance. (you've already created this)
  4. Wait for the bot to pick it all up!

I removed the lower-level categories (such as Start-Class community articles) from the top category Category:Wikipedia_1.0_assessments, they might confuse the bot and get counted twice! There is a hierarchy Category:Wikipedia_1.0_assessments > Category:Community articles by quality > Category:XXX-Class community articles. It looks as if the bot couldn't find the articles - I hope I fixed the problem. We'll have to see tomorrow night. Walkerma 05:17, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
Ah, OK. I got a bit confused on the Category scheme, and probably messed up something. I think they are OK now. I tried to get everything relevant into Category:WikiProject Community. Hi. If you still have work to do tagging talk pages and assessing articles, my AWB plugin might be of interest to you.

The plugin has two main modes of operation:

  • Tagging talk pages, great for high-speed tagging
  • Assessments mode, for reviewing articles (pictured)

As of the current version, WikiProjects with simple "generic" templates are supported by the plugin without the need for any special programatic support by me. I've had a look at your project's template and you seem to qualify.

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Community GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Community and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. I have left this message at this WikiProject's talk page so that any interested members can assist in helping the article keep its GA status. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left messages on the talk pages of the main contributors of the article and several other related WikiProjects. Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix if multiple editors assist in the workload. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Wikipedia Online Ambassadors program now accepting applications

I want to invite members of this WikiProject to apply for the Wikipedia Online Ambassadors program. Does this project do assessment of pages for individual communities

I'm seeking clarification on this project's goals. Because the project's front page says "This project's primary purpose is to build and manage Portal:Community (Wikipedia Community Reference) - a guide to articles that deal with the definitions of community and community development in general." my first impression was that this project's editors only do assessment of articles on sociological topics related to community (i.e. the work of defining), not articles for particular communities (e.g. the various intentional communities). If that is true, then the applicable projects for individual communities would instead be either the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Cooperatives project (for cooperatives only) or the catch-all Wikipedia:WikiProject_Organizations project. However, I do see a few intentional communities among articles that have been assessed by this project (all rated as stub or start), and the Communities portal itself includes a link to a list of intentional communities.

Should the primary purpose of this project instead read something like "articles that deal with the definitions of community and with community development in general"? I'm developing the article for the Abode of the Message (it still needs work, I know), and trying to figure out where to look for assessment. -- MouseRancher (talk) 19:41, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Is there an Infobox for individual communities that aren't cooperatives

I am not finding anything under the Community project regarding an Infobox for articles about individual communities (e.g. individual intentional communities). Does anyone know if something like that already exists? There is one for cooperatives (Template:Infobox_cooperative), but not one I can find for intentional communities that are not cooperatives. There is a Template:Infobox_community, but it's for demographic information, and not really appropriate. For the Abode of the Message article I have ended up using one created for non-profit organizations (Template:Infobox_non-profit), which is somewhat unsatisfying. If it seems worthwhile, I can create a new infobox, perhaps Template:Infobox_intentional_community. I can't seem to think of a broader template name that would encompass virtual communities, for instance. Thoughts? -- MouseRancher (talk) 20:45, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Community articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Community articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. The later detection of Fukushima radiation at US airports, which is not yet mentioned in this article, is also being discussed as a subtopic to be added into a general article. Separately from the 'criiticms' subsection on the US Transportation Security Administration alone.

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Don't touch my junk is a second related AfD regarding another article which also presents a US airport bodily search protest.

A potential general article not only on protest but on efficacy, social context, and events which are of national and international note in these regards would also include breaking 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and Fukushima I nuclear accidents news such as Japan radiation sets off O'Hare airport alarms -- CBS News Chicago station reports trace amounts of radiation clinging to flights from country ravaged by earthquake, tsunami:

"Trace amounts of radiation from Japan have been detected in Chicago, CBS News station WBBM-TV reports.

Travelers coming in from Japan on Wednesday triggered radiation detectors at O'Hare International Airport as they passed through customs. Only very small amounts of radiation were detected.

Expansion of Population mobility article

Hello! I am a student at Rice university and am working to revise the current population mobility article. I'm updating the article to show how the ability to travel and relocate effects families and women in particular. Wikipedia currently lacks information on geographic mobility outside the US, and does not look at how the ability to travel can change the dynamic of a community. The current Population mobility article focuses only on demographic measures of population mobility and the technical definition of mobility in the US Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey. I'll have to study how the term is applied. The English language versions of many articles tend toward US-centricity which isn't cool at all. I agree that "the ability to travel can change the dynamic of a community" and needs coverage somewhere. If you and your colleagues at Rice can expand the Population mobility article with sourced information that fits world-wide, please do so. If not, we should probably merge what little is there into Human migration. You may also have a look at Internally displaced person for some context and ideas. Thank you, Matt! Charley, thank you for your feedback! I'm sorry I am responding to this so late- I didn't have my watchlist setup the way I thought I did and completely missed it. I was able to find a fair amount of information and expand the article substantially. There are a lot of good reports and journal articles on the subject (as well as two full books I am waiting on from the library). The source information out there comes from both economic researchers and more sociological ones, so the article has grown to have two distinct flavors between its main sections (about technical measurement and then social impacts). I have gotten a lot of feedback from my classmates, and will be making a fair number of changes to the article over the next week to incorporate their suggestions. Thank you for your help and for giving me links to those related articles! I'll link them into the See also section of population mobility as well. CfD discussion for societies and cultures

There is a discussion going on right now at WP:Categories for discussion that involves changing the category names for all cultures, from, for example, "Afghan society" to "Society of Afghanistan". I can see that next will be changing "German culture" to "Culture of Germany" and the like. This would be for all ethnicities, nationalities and cultures.

Leaflet for Wikiproject Community at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

Today, STEM careers offer a wide range of jobs in diverse segments. Some of the most unique as well as powerful jobs in the world require a background in science, technology, engineering and math. Interest in STEM studies and careers has swelled more than 20 percent from the interest expressed by the graduating class of 2004. In 2012 there were more than 7.4 million workers in the fields of science and technology, and by 2018 there could be more than 8.6 million STEM workers, not counting self-employed people.

Why STEM Centric Career Development?

Unemployment has skyrocketed, job security has evaporated, and compensation has declined for most all workers. Retail jobs make up for most of the new low wage jobs, and better jobs across all industries demand the application of creativity, innovativeness and complex thought. Routine and easily defined job face competition from automation and outsourcing. Middle class job loss is America’s most pressing economic problem. Yet foreign competition, cheaper labor and free trade are easily blamed for the decline of career opportunities. Beliefs about protecting jobs by keeping them at home or not hiring immigrant talent will not affect the realities of labor or globalization.

The U.S. faces fundamental challenges about its role in the global workplace and economic order. Unlike cyclical unemployment where layoffs come from temporary pauses in activity, the present structural changes have relocated jobs permanently. Creating new jobs is taking longer, workers are experiencing more stress and less satisfaction, and employers seeking to grow companies face greater credit risks. To achieve this, students and adults must face tough choices about how to invest in their future. Few workers can avoid the consequences of competing in a super-integrated world where all aspects of production have become commodities. All raw materials, design, manufacturing, distribution, and financing are accessible at anytime from anywhere, by anyone. As a result, assumptions about career development strategies for Main Street workers, college graduates, and outer space explorers need review. Embracing a STEM-Centric career development orientation is necessary if career development is to build bridges across the community and beyond.

  • Community Liaison - this position will initially focus on working with the Flow team and also with the Editing (VisualEditor) team, mostly at non-English wikis; however, a lot of smaller or short-term tasks continually come up, so the WMF is particularly looking for someone who is adaptable, and with several diverse interests.
  • Community Liaison (Part time contract) - this part-time position will primarily focus on working with the Mobile teams, as the link explains.

WP:ONEWAY questions and case study

Hello: I'm curious to know if there's a precedent for dealing with the following issue:

Suppose some online community exists that is focused on some given theme. If both the community and the theme have wiki pages, and the community page links to the theme page, what sort of standard of notability (or otherwise) should be used to decide whether the theme page should link to the community page?

The practical version of this question is links from Masturbation to NoFap. This is discussed on the relevant talk page: Talk:Masturbation#MEDRS. Critics have suggested that NoFap is not notable and that it represents a "fringe" view. However, it has 200000 members at present and has been around since 2011, so to me it seems stable and significant enough to mention. There are plenty of articles in the popular press linking the topics, and some research articles as well. However, there is some disagreement on the issue, given that NoFap is not "mainstream". WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Utopian & intentional communities

Hi, I have been working my way through Category:Intentional communities in reverse alphabetic order & moving the ones in the US to Category:Intentional communities in the United States. Along the way, I have been trying to standardize the citations with citation templates, parenthetical referencing when appropriate, using Citation Style 1 templates to add OCLC & ISBN numbers & online links to publications, infoboxes, & other WikiGnome activities.

One thing that I have noticed is that Utopian community, List of American Utopian communities, & Category:Utopian communities all seem to have evolved with no connection to WikiProject Community. I am interested in working with others to rectify that & will probably contact other editors to discuss that here.
