Hi, just wanted to tell you that there is a mistake on Mohammed El moustaoui : the link leads to a runner... actually he is a proeminent writter in Tamazight whom I know personnaly. He wrote many songs interpreted by Ammour M'barek who was the forst to modernize the Amazigh music. Also, there are serious reasons to think that Cicero was of Amazigh descent : his name is still now pronounced by Russians & others as "Kikeron" & in Tamazight it is 'Ikikern, which means chickpeas. Other than that his parents used to rise horses as many Amazigh living in Rome where horse breeders.... I think one should at least mention this hypothesis. US accademic researchers have emitted such hypothesis as highly probable. All the best Stan Idelsen

Wikiproject Country Studies
I've been working on Wikipedia:WikiProject Library of Congress Country Studies, a Wikiproject designed to incorporate the Library of Congress Country Studies into Wikipedia. The Country Studies are in the public domain, so the text may be freely used here. The Country Studies program has just released a profile on Morocco with information on Morocco's history, society, economy, and other topics. See the profile here. I have been using the profile's text and information. If you would like to use text from the profile, please update the Morocco subpage for the Wikiproject. This allows other editors to see what still needs to be done. Thanks, I would appreciate any help with importing the Morocco profile into Wikipedia.--Bkwillwm 07:50, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

The whole information relating to Morocco represents a rewriting of history
Essentially by not including that what you dont want to remember. It is superficial at best, and criminaly dishonest at worst.
In relation to the article on Morocco:
It can be argued that the last 50 years in Morocco’s history have been the most relevant as it has become an independent country and has had a belligerent foreign policy with its neighbours, Algeria and western Sahara.
How come the only link to the green march is in the Geography section and is not mentioned in the history??? How come there is no link AT ALL in the article to the sand war
How come that the hundreds of victims of 30 years of repression are written of with a couple of lines: " Hassan II became King of Morocco on March 3, 1961. His rule would be marked by political unrest, and the ruthless government response earned the period the name "the years of lead"."
If you visit the article on Hassan II you get a little bit more of information, but why is this information not included in the main article about Morocco??? Is it only of interest to the personality of Hassan II??
Why is there no mention of the reasons for this political unrest, and the civil and student protest marches that were brutally dissolved by police? Why is there no mention of the extensive use of torture against dissidents? Why isn't there a reference to Tazmarat and other concentration camps to which these where sent?
One aspect of Moroccan torture is that the King is "the giver of light" so many of those imprisoned are submitted to entire years at a time without any light...
Even important aspects of its pre-independence history are ignored. From the ethnological map you can see that Morocco is mainly divided by Arabs in the Plains and Berebers in the mountains. For hundreds of years tribal relations prevailed and when there was disagreement conflict would arise, with a deadlock, as the mountains proved superb defence positions. It was only until the French arrived and set up an effective road system to move troops around, that the country could finally be ruled under one unified leadership.
Why is there no mention about this??
All the questions I pose are discussed at length in Gilles Perrault Notre ami le roi ISBN 2070326950.
Other books are: Stolen Lives: Twenty Years in a Desert Jail (Talk Miramax Books, April 2001)
And Oufkir, un destin marocain (Calmann-Lévy) published by Stephen Smith, formerly African correspondent for the French newspaper Libération and now working for the prestigious daily Le Monde. http://www.nd.edu/~romlang/news/oufkir.html
Conclusion
The rule under Hassan II was oppressive and repressive, he killed thousands for various reasons, and several attempts where made on his life, mainly from his own military. He started wars with Algeria when they where weak, just after their independence. He took over Western Sahara when Spain was weak, creating a conflict that is raging today.
That this dark history of modern Morocco is dispatched in the article with a couple of passing comments is shameful. We may have an excellent encyclopaedic article, but it is useless if it says nothing.
There are thousands of words to be written, but it seems that Hassan II has done a good job and the truth is buried and forgotten to the majority of its people and the international community. What will happen if I add this information to the page?? Will the Moroccan press (censorship) office come in and delete it?? I wouldn’t be surprised if this comment disappears on Monday.
- Your saying is too onesided. All countries/Chief of states have their dark sides.
- Make (constructive) suggestions for change / compeltion in this page and lets see
- Wikipedia is common work. The remark on Moroccan *censorichip* is just absurd.
Natural Wonders of Morocco
I tested Wikipedia's coverage of Natural Wonders of the World, and Morocco had the most missing articles besides Spain:

Project directory
Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 15:01, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Marrakech sections
Hello,
I've noticed that the page on Marrakech could use some work. The biggest problem is the Sites section, which provides several lists, but no descriptions/explanations at all. Most of the things listed can be removed, and the ones that remain should be described and explained in detail.
I am not a member of this WikiProject, and don't know much about Morocco. If someone has the time and knows the correct information, please fix it up.

Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:00, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Bilateral relations discussion
I would like to invite you all to participate in a discussion at this thread regarding bilateral relations between two countries. All articles related to foreign relations between countries are now under the scope of WikiProject Foreign relations, a newly created project. We hope that the discussion will result in a more clean and organized way of explaining such relationships. Thank you. Ed ¿Cómo estás? 18:02, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

I believe this very unique culture, with a one-of-a-kind alphabet Tifinagh and history dating back as far as ancient Egypt, merits it's own WikiProject. There is a beautiful portal at Portal:Berbers, and I think Wikipedia would benefit greatly from this. Chris 02:24, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello everyone! There is a discussion at List of countries by formation dates that concernes this wikiproject. It relates to the fact that some users include former colonies (such as Algeria or Western Sahara/Ifni) in the columm for the last territorial changes of their respective colonial power, and this because "formely" such colonies were considered "provinces". I believe this discussion and its result may interest you. Thank you! The Ogre (talk) 20:36, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Project banner
It is my sincerest hope that this statement is not taken as being an attempt to subvert this project, take control over it, or any similar thing. However, the Template:AfricaProject has recently had parameters put into it to allow it to provide separate assessments for all the "Africa" projects, including this one. If in the interests of reducing banner clutter the members of this project were to choose to use that banner, please let me know and I can adjust any categories accordingly to permit it. Thank you. Proposal to consolidate African country WikiProject banners
Template:AfricaProject was recently modified, and now contains individual parameters for all countries in Africa (see usage notes). Since project-specific assessment for all African countries can now be accomplished through the template, a proposal has been made at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Africa to consolidate all individual African country WikiProject banners.
Comments or suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you, Black Falcon (Talk) 23:28, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
Draft Guidelines for Lists of companies by country - Feedback Requested
Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. The ultimate goal is the improvement of these articles to Featured List status. As a WikiProject that currently has one of these lists within your scope, I would really appreciate your feedback! You can find the draft guidelines here. Thanks for your help as we look to build consensus and improve Wikipedia! - Richc80 (talk) 13:35, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme
As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.
- The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
- The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
- A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.
Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.
Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 21:06, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Articles flagged for cleanup
Currently, 676 articles are assigned to this project, of which 130, or 19.2%, are flagged for cleanup of some sort. (Data as of 14 July 2008.) Are you interested in finding out more? I am offering to generate cleanup to-do lists on a project or work group level. See User:B. Wolterding/Cleanup listings for details. More than 150 projects and work groups have already subscribed, and adding a subscription for yours is easy - just place the following template on your project page:

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Morocco
Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.
We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.
A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.
We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:26, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group
Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.
All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:03, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.
If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none
parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.
Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Marinid dynasty
Walrasiad (talk) 18:06, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
Hi. Over the last few days I have been adding the entries on Marinid dynasty emirs.
- Abu Yusuf Yaqub (1259 - 1286)
- Abu Yaqub Yusuf (1286 - 1306)
- Abu Thabit Amir (1307 - 1308)
- Abu al-Rabi Sulayman (1308 - 1310)
- Abu Said Uthman II (1310 - 1331)
- Abu al-Hasan 'Ali (1331 - 1348)
I have relied primarily on only one source (Ch.Andre Julien, Histoire de l'Afrique du Nord, 1931 (1961 ed.)) to compose the entries, which is probably unsatisfactory. I would welcome review & corrections and additional sources.
I am also not an Arabic speaker, and have transliterated the Arabic spellings from the entries in the French wikipedia. I am not certain they are correct, and would welcome someone to double-check them.

Morocco articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Morocco articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

WikiProject cleanup listing
I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). 1995 referendum
I've just created articles on all the national elections and referendums in Morocco (see {{Moroccan elections}}). However, I am slightly dubious about one of them. This page of the Parliament's website lists nine referendums, but none in 1995. However, lower down the page, it states that there was one held in 1995 to change the date of the Finance Act vote, thereby contradicting itself. Can anyone confirm which part of the page is correct? The article is here. Cheers, Number 57 14:26, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
The article La Mañana (Morocco) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- A search for references could not find published (gBook) mention of this newspaper, fails WP:N and WP:V
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Jeepday (talk) 12:33, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Experienced editors with specialist regional knowledge urgently wanted
The Arbitration Committee is seeking to appoint additional people to the CheckUser and Oversight teams, in particular people with specialist knowledge.
- Because of increasing activity in the South Asian, Southeast Asian, or Middle Eastern regions, CheckUser applications are particularly sought from people who not only meet our general requirements but also are familiar with the ISPs and typical editing patterns of any of these regions.
Successful candidates are likely to be regularly available and already familiar with local and global processes, policies, and guidelines especially those concerning CheckUser and Oversight. CheckUser candidates are expected to be technically proficient, and previous experience with OTRS is beneficial for Oversight candidates. All candidates must at least 18 years of age; have attained legal majority in their jurisdiction of residence; and be willing to identify to the Wikimedia Foundation prior to receiving permissions. If you think you may be suitably qualified, please see the appointments page for further information. The application period is scheduled to close 18 September 2011. Sorry if this isn't the right place to mention this, but while going to random articles to work on grammar, I came across this page. Marrakesh Template
Hi. I've noticed that the Marrakesh template largely consists of red links. Some of these are due to little errors in the title used on the template, meaning they aren't being linked to existing articles (Badi Palace, instead of El Badi Palace). However, most of the red links are for landmarks or hotels that don't have articles and don't seem to be of any note. Are they really necessary? After a recent request, I added WikiProject Morocco to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Reassess Casablanca tramway
Hi,
Could someone perhaps reassess Casablanca tramway. I don't know the procedure for requesting that here at this project. (It's also at Wikiproject Streetcars and Wikiproject Trams.) It's currently stub class but I've translated practically all of the French article, as requested by the {{Expand French}}
tag – my guess is it should now be Start class. Thanks, Si Trew (talk) 17:03, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

How do you properly spell Fes, in English?
Is this a question that keeps coming up? I'm a native English speaker (some french and Arabic) and I find Fez to be incorrect. The OED says otherwise, and recently, an editor has gone and made mass changes of Fes to Fez, in many articles. Comments? -Roxy the non edible dog™ (resonate) 09:43, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- Both are correct but it seems that Fez is the most common. Xerxes1337 (talk) 19:53, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

We need an article Cannabis in Morocco
Hello, I'm working at WP:WikiProject Cannabis, and we're trying to expand our coverage of "Cannabis in (country)" articles, and I saw that we don't have one for Morocco. Morocco has had an interesting role in cannabis history, commercially, culturally, and legally (especially how they gradually illegalized the product, and how it moved from national to international prominence). Morocco is famous for hashish production, and allegedly it makes up 10% of the country's exports, though illegally. Having a strong and well-referenced article would help cut through rumors and myths about hashish in Morocco, and give readers more clear facts and context. We have some suggestions at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Cannabis#.22Cannabis_in_.28Country.29.22_articles_for_creation_and_expansion for how to help add more countries to our coverage; anyone here want to help out by covering Morocco? You can use some of our recent articles as a template to see what kinds of facts and details would help! Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 12:10, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Help request: 100 Morocco-related articles needing geographical coordinates
Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Morocco, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Morocco, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.
The articles in question are listed in Category:Morocco articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:
- Bou Regreg
- El Jadida (province)
- Iles Purpuraires
- Moulay Yacoub Prefecture
- Rabat-Fes expressway
- Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaer
- Salle 11th November
...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 100 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.
Why add coordinates?
By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.
How can I do it?
The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members.
Please let me know if this is useful, or if I can help in any way. -- The Anome (talk) 22:52, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Mohammed VI of Morocco has no cites
I see that Mohammed VI of Morocco is tagged as "This biography of a living person does not cite any references or sources." That's pretty bad, folks.
Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons for any living person, but IMHO especially for a high public figure. "Be very firm about the use of high quality references. Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion." (bold in original).
IMHO members of WikiProject Morocco should make it a priority to source this article. Please note that I am not a member of WikiProject Morocco and will not be doing this myself. -- 201.37.230.43 (talk) 18:47, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Unreferenced living people articles bot
User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.
The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Morocco/Archive 1/Unreferenced BLPs<<<
If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.
Thank you.
- Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Morocco/Archive 1/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
- There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.

2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages
Greetings WikiProject Morocco/Archive 1 Members!
This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:
If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.
Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.
Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.
Best regards, Stevietheman — Delivered: 18:04, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
Popular pages report
We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Morocco/Archive 1/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Morocco.
We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:
- The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
- The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
- The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).
We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Morocco, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

One of your project's articles has been selected for improvement!
Hello, |
WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:48, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like

Request for comment on Si Kaddour Benghabrit
Hello, I'm in a longstanding editing conflict with a single editor @M.Bitton: over how the role of Si Kaddour Benghabrit in the Treaty of Fes should be covered in the article about him. Most recently, I made this edit and M.Bitton reverted it. Input from other editors would be appreciated. إيان (talk) 19:55, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
- Note: The edit in question is not only based on an unreliable source by an engineer, it is also giving UNDUE weight to their opinion about something that is of little importance to the primary topic. Unfortunately, rather than address the raised issue, "إيان" decided to resort to personal attacks. Please see the talk page for more info. M.Bitton (talk) 21:23, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
- Note: To address some of the misrepresentations in the above comment: the "engineer" (and award-winning writer, economist, and senior public administrator) in question is Hamza Ben Driss Ottmani, author of the source Kaddour Benghabrit : un maghrébin hors du commun. ISBN 978-9954-21-216-5. OCLC 742235168. That my edit gives "undue" weight is the personal opinion of M.Bitton and nobody else. As for this baseless allegation that I resorted to "personal attacks"—see for yourselves what was said in the discussion, which began here, and see the invective, condescending language this user has used toward me. إيان (talk) 19:51, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
Seeking to check Tifinagh (Amazigh) names of cities
I suppose this could be an informal request for comment, but I've posted a request at the Marrakesh article for editors who are literate enough in Tifinagh (Amazigh) writing to be able to verify the Tifinagh renditions of names in Moroccan city articles, or for sources that we can consult for the official names. See my comment at Talk:Marrakesh#Amazigh names need double-checking. Amazigh names are often the subject of POV-motivated and/or disruptive edits (both for or against) and it would help to have more certainty about this content, so these issues can be dealt with more easily and also to ensure accuracy in general. Project-independent quality assessments
Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:52, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
If anyone is able to look at Women in Morocco, that would be good. The current version has a fragmentary sentence in the first paragraph: "Others adhere to an Arabized and Islamic . Independence from France in 1956.". I can see there were significant changes to the first paragraph in this edit in 2022. I can also see that that that paragraph is sourced to a blog which does not look like a reliable source, and which does not reflect the current content in that paragraph. Erasure of name of Moroccan cities in Tifinagh script
Hello everyone, I'm not sure if someone will read this or an admin or anything but an user keeps on deleting the names of Moroccan cities when they're written in Tifinagh script. This cannot continue. Amazigh is as much an official langage of Morocco as Arabic. If you have some time and you notice the Tifinagh script is lacking, then please undo the modifications that erased them. If for some obscure reason Amazigh is unauthorized on this platform, then can someone please tell me why.Zeblade12 (talk) 10:33, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- I recommend perhaps starting a "Request for Comments" about this if no consensus is forthcoming. I'm pinging Skitash here as well, instead of continuing the discussion at User talk:Zeblade12.
- Two initial comments: 1) there should be no problem including Tifinagh in relevant articles per MOS:FORLANG (but possibly in a footnote alongside Arabic), but 2) Tifinagh names present certain difficulties for verifiability.
- Verifiability concerns include: it's easy to look up Arabic names in many sources, whereas I'm not sure if any Tifinagh dictionary exists or where to access one if it does, and it's unclear whether the editors adding their own Tifinagh transcriptions are following a standard convention or making up their own transliterations/translations. Naturally, the existence of multiple regional Amazigh languages also complicates the matter. The fact that I've seen various editors and IPs arbitrarily change Tifinagh names over the years without explanation (other than a terse "corrected") illustrates this problem. On at least one occasion I found that a Tifinagh name added by an editor this way looked nothing like the one seen on official signage.
- This puts Wikipedia in the awkward position of acting like a pseudo-dictionary for Tifinagh without being able to cross-check it for reliability. Ideally, we could use whatever Tifinagh names are used by official sources, but the latter often omit Tifinagh. I imagine similar problems must exist for other local languages around the world that unfortunately have very limited institutional support (constitution notwithstanding). R Prazeres (talk) 19:14, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. This was exactly my point. The names being used are not backed by verifiable sources and are very likely to be inaccurate. For instance, the English and French Wikipedia articles for Zagora, Inezgane and Midelt present contrasting Berber spellings, making it unclear which is the correct one. Additionally, most of these articles use native names that are not written in the official Standard Moroccan Amazigh, but instead in unofficial local Berber languages such as Tachelhit or even "Berber languages" (as seen in Casablanca and Rabat), without specifying the specific Berber language used. I have also considered MOS:FORLANG as a potential solution to this issue, but I am uncertain about the objections raised against this rule. The guideline states that "a single foreign language equivalent name may be included in the lead sentence" and advises against the use of alternative lengthy names to avoid cluttering the lead sentence. The rule's example of a Ukrainian province is applicable to Moroccan cities in this context. Skitash (talk) 20:24, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- For your first point: indeed I noticed the inconsistent names across French and English wikis previously, that's another good example of the problem. For the last point (lead sentence clutter), the policy recommends using a footnote, so in cases where we do have accurate version in both languages, I think that's an easy enough solution. R Prazeres (talk) 20:34, 22 March 2024 (UTC)

@NAADAAN, you may wish to participate in this discussion. @Skitash, respectfully, you should probably refrain from reverting editors on this issue while discussion is still ongoing, as Drmies also requested earlier. As I said above, Tifinagh is at least reasonably relevant and I don't think it can be dismissed on MOS:FORLANG grounds alone. NAADAAN is making an effort to show sources, though I think this needs to take the form of proper citations (I haven't been able to access most of the URLs copy-pasted in edit summaries like this).
As I mentioned above, an RfC might be the best way to obtain a wider and more constructive consensus. The question would need to be worded more neutrally than what's above, but I'm happy to help craft one. Let me know if any of you want to proceed this way. R Prazeres (talk) 21:29, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, yes I'm fine with a RfC. I had posted a message onto @Skitash's user page, but it'd be way more appropriate to hold such a discussion here. I honestly don't think that the argument of the use of the Amazigh language being irrelevant should even be entertained, if it's notable enough for many municipalities to include it alongside Arabic in their logos and official documentation, it's good enough for Wikipedia.
- Regarding inconsistent names in Tifinagh, and fears of unavailability regarding reliable sources -- which is the main concern you express here -- I propose the following procedure to have the most accurate and reliable spelling especially in cases of BLP:
- For public Moroccan personalities which were either known to be native Berber speakers or alive during or after the 2001 Ajdir speech where Standard Tamazight was announced, attempt to find transcriptions in the Std. Amazigh version of sites relating to their profession (i.e. the Agadir municipal council, members of Government on the Prime Minister's site, Tiznit film festival, etc...).
- If this is unfruitful, attempt to find a spelling on the Tamazight service for Maghreb Arabe-Presse (MAP; i.e. appointment of Mohammed Berrid as Ins.-Gen. of the FAR, announcements of royal appointments of governors for 2023).
- If this is again unfruitful, attempt to find a spelling on Amazigh-speaking news sites (AgadirToday, AkalPress, AzulPress, AmadalAmazigh). If a proper transcription cannot be found, then it is better left omitted per WP:OR.
- For institution, rely on their own usage (Ministry of Health, CDAI, etc); for more secretive institutions, rely on their use by the MAP or in the IRCAM's DGLAI dictionary.
- For places, rely on the usage used by respective municipal governments (for Fes-Meknes, the commune's logo gives the inscription of ⴼⴰⵙ-ⵎⴽⵏⴰⵙ; the commune of Sale has its own website in Tamazight) or maps made by the appropriate agency for more rural places (i.e. maps published by the Agadir Urbanism Agency).
- If this is unfruitful, perhaps rely on weather reports made by the General Directorate of Meteorology and published by the MAP or the same royal appointments published by the MAP. If this is once again unfruitful, rely on reports from other branches of government, then other press reports.
- For things dated to the Andalusian period, perhaps rely on Ibn Tunart's lexicon and make use of the Berber Arabic alphabet or the Berber Latin alphabet. For people, places, or things mentioned in Roman-era inscriptions, write in Latin or in Tifinagh. For pre-Roman things, write in Tifinagh with perhaps something similar to Template:MongolUnicode to replicate top-to-bottom writing in original Tifinagh inscriptions.
- For Algeria, replace the IRCAM with the HCA and Maghreb Arabe-Presse with Algerie Presse Service.
- I understand that many of these are primary sources, but in this specific case, they are the most reliable for transcriptions per WP:PRIMARYNOTBAD especially considering how lacking sources are. Apologies if this too long or overwhelming, but calling this a controversial subject would be an understatement. Have a nice day! NAADAAN (talk) 23:19, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- I think those are good tips. With the exception of #7: for historical topics, we should stick to only what secondary sources use, otherwise we will certainly fall into WP:OR (sometimes even the Arabic names/translations in these articles have this problem too); whereas that isn't really an issue for contemporary names, which should indeed be based on current usage that we can verify. R Prazeres (talk) 23:27, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- With regards to #7, I was thinking of early Roman-era Tifinagh inscriptions in the case that secondary source affirms not only its spelling but the meaning as well (i.e. this) -- I do agree that relying on a primary source in that way would stir up the pot in some way, so perhaps only rely on secondary literature citing it. Do you think this is an issue still worth raising to an RfC? Either way, do you think it would be a good idea to reinstate those names and add an inline citation to the appropriate source? I already did such a thing with Morocco. NAADAAN (talk) 23:43, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- For things like historical inscriptions, I think generally speaking it's of course fine to mention them in the body of the article, where relevant, but it's not a good idea to introduce them as alternate names in the lead section (which should be only a summary of essential, straightforward facts; anything that needs further explanation, context, or debate should be in the main body). And yes, always rely on secondary sources.
- I don't see a problem with adding Tifinagh names to relevant contemporary topics if they're supported by a relevant citation. As MOS:FORLANG recommends, we can use a footnote to avoid clutter in the opening sentence. Either way, though, the important thing is also to not continue edit-warring, so don't do this if it's already being reverted. R Prazeres (talk) 02:13, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- Frankly, I am uncertain about the reliability of the provided sources, as they seem to pose certain issues. As NAADAAN correctly highlighted above, all of these are primary sources, and I question the applicability of WP:PRIMARYNOTBAD in this context as the provided sources don't seem to meet the criteria as stated in that particular rule (e.g. having to be "authoritative, high-quality, accurate, fact-checked, expert-approved, subject to editorial control"). Only a handful of the presented sources actually directly pertain to the topic being discussed (city names). Since the websites for Agadir and Salé are government-affiliated and promotional, it might be more suitable to list them as external links at the end of the article, rather than relying on them as authoritative references. Moreover, the other referenced websites (AgadirToday, AkalPress, AzulPress, AmadalAmazigh) appear to be of questionable reputability and credibility. This issue is exacerbated by the fact that all of these articles are written in Tifinagh, which can not be translated easily, making them inaccessible and incomprehensible to readers and editors alike. I have no issue with holding an RfC. If that method isn't viable, and should Tifinagh text be included, I would recommend integrating it into footnotes as @M.Bitton had aptly done in Tamazgha due to verifiability issues. Skitash (talk) 18:28, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- "This issue is exacerbated by the fact that all of these articles are written in Tifinagh, which can not be translated easily" there is a romanization protocol under ALA-LC, if that is what you are inquiring about. You can try a web-app here. If it is going to be put as a footnote despite its verifiability, then it should also be included with Arabic like in the case of Morocco.
- Also, any supposed promotional or ideological bias that you may perceive in sites for the Agadir City Commune, or the MAP, or Tamazight-language news sites wouldn't hinder the quality of the transcriptions insofar as it fits the criteria in WP:BLPSELFPUB. When it comes to differing transcriptions, then the most authoritative one should be picked, and especially in the case of BLP or organizations, it's better to use the wording used by themselves or organizations closest to their field of work.
- Per WP:PRIMARYCARE a "person's autobiography, own website, or a page about the person on an employer's or publisher's website, is an acceptable", as well as an "organization's own website is an acceptable (although possibly incomplete) primary source for information about what the company says about itself and for most basic facts about its history, products, employees, finances, and facilities." NAADAAN (talk) 00:01, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

- The question of the weak sourcing aside, I think that there is a problem with how MOS:LEADLANG is formulated since it appears to contain information that is open to interpretation. I raised the issue on Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Lead_section. M.Bitton (talk) 16:27, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- As per the above, Tifinagh transcriptions and transliterations are not standardized, and the cited sources are primary (with PRIMARYNOTBAD being nonpertinent here); this has also been discussed extensively at Talk:Algeria. Snowstormfigorion (talk) 22:55, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- "with PRIMARYNOTBAD being nonpertinent here" Why exactly? NAADAAN (talk) 23:47, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- Criterion 3 of WP:PRIMARY states "A primary source may be used on Wikipedia only to make straightforward, descriptive statements of facts that can be verified by any educated person with access to the primary source but without further, specialized knowledge"; Tifinagh names, transcriptions and transliterations are not verifiable. Snowstormfigorion (talk) 01:58, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
- Per the proposal I wrote and in harmony with WP:PRIMARYCARE, the transcription used by the person or an organization associated with the person is authoritative with regards to their name, which fits with MOS:NAME. Is there a problem with this?
- They can be verified by transliterating such to Latin through the ALA-LC standard. Also, I seldom understand why knowing Tamazight would be considered "specialized knowledge" or would be irrelevant if a good part of the Moroccan population (at least 1/4!) speaks it and especially so knowing that Tifinagh is generalized in the Moroccan school curriculum. Of course, it would be considered "specialized" for WP:AVERAGE, but the same can be said for knowledge in Arabic. NAADAAN (talk) 02:47, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
"Also, I seldom understand why knowing Tamazight would be considered "specialized knowledge" or would be irrelevant if a good part of the Moroccan population (at least 1/4!) speaks it"
While that is true, it's important to note that merely speaking Tamazight doesn't necessarily imply proficiency in the Tifinagh script or written forms of the language. I assume the quarter you mentioned is based on the 2014 census. That percentage constitutes the speakers of individual Berber languages (4% Tarifit, 14.1% Tashelhit and 7.9% Central Atlas Tamazight), which are primarily oral without a major written component. Furthermore, while it may be generalized, only 9% of children are taught Standard Moroccan Amazigh in schools. Hence, in this context, knowledge of Tamazight could indeed be considered "specialized knowledge".- Regarding your proposal in harmony with WP:PRIMARYCARE and MOS:NAME, I fail to see the applicability of these rules to the current discussion. The former rule relates to autobiographies and companies while the latter concerns biographies and personal names, and neither pertains to the topic of geographical locations and cities. Skitash (talk) 14:20, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
"it's important to note that merely speaking Tamazight doesn't necessarily imply proficiency in the Tifinagh script or written forms of the language"
There's a new census coming in a few months, so I deem it counter-productive to go around in circles over it at the given moment. I'm ready to concede to add the ALA-LC transliteration of the Tifinagh transcription if this is a valid source of concern like in the page for Aziz Akhannouch."The former rule relates to autobiographies and companies while the latter concerns biographies and personal names"
It's worth considering that @Snowstormfigorion also removed the Tifinagh inscriptions for Mohammed VI, Moulay Hassan, and Aziz Akhannouch; also, who wouldn't be more qualified to know the name of an established city than its regional government? NAADAAN (talk) 20:10, 29 March 2024 (UTC)- Nadaan, no one's going around in circles except you. As elaborated by everyone, Tifinagh, period, is non-verifiable, that also includes its romanization. The PRIMARYCARE and PRIMARYNOTBAD explanatory essays are not applicable here per their parent policy PRIMARY. So stop WP:STONEWALLING, would you? Snowstormfigorion (talk) 16:04, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Snowstormfigorion, who is "everyone" in this case? I gave clear enough instructions on how to verify Tifinagh which I have yet to hear criticism for that I haven't addressed. I'd be appreciative if you at least offered a counter-argument per WP:NEGOTIATE.
- You have needlessly reverted the articles back against WP:EDITCON despite consensus building not being over and there being explicit calls in this conversation for this not to be done. Cc. @R Prazeres, do you believe this is worth making an RfC over? I don't want to take overly drastic measures. NAADAAN (talk) 16:31, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
- This has been a recurring issue for a long time and it potentially concerns a lot of articles. So I think that yes, an RfC would help (hopefully) to clarify and set the best way forward. R Prazeres (talk) 16:58, 3 April 2024 (UTC)

RfC on the use of Tifinagh in Morocco-related articles
Should Tifinagh transcriptions be included in articles relating to Morocco following the proposal set forth in the WikiProject's previous talk page discussion? NAADAAN (talk) 16:15, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose for a few reasons:
- Tifinagh transcriptions and translations lack standardization or codification. This resulted in numerous cases of contributors and IPs arbitrarily altering Tifinagh spellings based on what they think is right. This inconsistency is also evident across other language versions of Wikipedia. For instance, the English and French Wikipedia articles on Zagora, Inezgane and Midelt present contrasting Berber spellings, creating confusion over the correct spelling. In the real world, the standardization of the Tamazight language, its script, and teaching methods faces "real problems" in Algerian schools. According to Morocco World News, "Tamazight cannot achieve a purely standardized status that is understood by all Imazighen because, in reality, such a single standard does not exist".
- The verifiability and accuracy of Tifinagh texts are questionable due to the absence of Tifinagh dictionaries or credible sources providing correct spellings or translations. All of the sources presented above are primary sources and unreliable sources. Although Berber is an official language in Algeria and Morocco, the Algerian constitution (available in Arabic and French) indicates that efforts are ongoing to develop Tamazight to ultimately lead to its adoption as an official language in the future, implying that there is still work that needs to be done.
- There are numerous regional mutually unintelligible Berber languages. Articles featuring Berber language text often represent different Berber languages such as Kabyle (in Tizi Ouzou), Tarifit (in Chakrane) or Tashelhit (in Agadir), which are neither verifiable nor official. This issue is also reflected in real world challenges by Algeria in deciding which of its six Berber dialects should be taught in schools.
- The MOS:FORLANG guideline advises including only one foreign language equivalent name in the lead sentence. This was further clarified in response to a query by @M.Bitton on Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Lead section.
- Furthermore, I'd like to draw attention to this RfC that took place on Talk:Algeria concerning the inclusion of Berber language text. The consensus was against using Tifinagh text.
- Skitash (talk) 17:04, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- I frankly don't understand why you bring up Algeria, the Algerian constiution, or Kabyle when this is exclusively focused on Morocco, Standard Moroccan Tamazight (SMT) is standardized by IRCAM and is largely intelligible between Tamazight, Tachelhit, and Tarifit. The RfC on the Algeria article was on the basis that Tamazight recognition wasn't codified in Algerian legislature. Any implication made by Algerian legislators on the state of Tamazight is irrelevant to Morocco and has no effect on this conversation.
- In Morocco, Article 5 of the constiution puts SMT in an equal pedestal as Arabic as "common heritage of all Moroccans with no exception". In accordance with the constiution, the use of SMT has been codified into law under organic law 26-16, Royal decree 1-19-121 with specification that it be used with Tifinagh. A royal decree also sets forth the use of Tifinagh. I set forth a proposal in the previous conversation to obtain an accurate Tifinagh spelling of places, words, and people; I don't see how WP:PRIMARYNOTBAD doesn't apply in this case, and in the case of Maghreb Arabe-Presse, any percieved bias would not affect the accuracy of spelling. There are inconsistent and disputes in spellings in English for Boucraa, Laayoune, Es-smara, and Benguerir; as a matter of fact -- the French article for Agadir lists a myriad of spellings in Arabic. Need there be a new conversation? NAADAAN (talk) 17:52, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- I think the confusion may stem from what you proposed in the discussion:
For Algeria, replace the IRCAM with the HCA and Maghreb Arabe-Presse with Algerie Presse Service
. M.Bitton (talk) 17:57, 5 April 2024 (UTC)- Fair enough, I assumed that Algeria had a similar legal framework as Morocco since I had noticed the existence of the HCA and a Tamazight service ran by the APS; I stand corrected after doing more research, since the relevant laws don't really mention specifics about standardization and the Algerian governement hasn't chosen which alphabet to use as of 2017. NAADAAN (talk) 18:08, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- If you believe Algeria's situation is not relevant here, then what prompted your suggestion to use HCA and Algerie Presse Service for Algerian articles? Like Morocco, Algeria also faces problems with standardizing and codifying Berber, making Algeria's context relevant here. Since you find Kabyle irrelevant, let's instead focus on Chakrane, where the Berber name is in Tarifit, in contrast to Agadir where Tashelhit is used. Speaking of standardization, all three Berber languages are used in Moroccan primary school textbooks in practice, but primarily Tashelhit (which drew criticism from northern and eastern Berber speakers who felt marginalized). WP:PRIMARYNOTBAD doesn't apply in your case per WP:PRIMARY criterion 3, as Tifinagh lacks verifiability. Moreover, the sources you provided do not meet the standards set in WP:PRIMARYNOTBAD, as they are certainly not "authoritative, high-quality, accurate, fact-checked, expert-approved, subject to editorial control". - Because I wasn't aware of the previous RfC, I clearly explained my stance in my past message. I addressed the concerns raised in the Algerian RfC and demonstrated why it wouldn't be an issue in this case. Per my proposal, a source can be found that shows that the Commune of Chakrane uses the transcription "ⵛⴰⵇⵔⴰⵏ"; case closed. Also, proper nouns wouldn't change based on dialect of Tamazight so I don't know why this needs to be discussed. Furthermore, this wouldn't explain the subsequent content removal in Morocco even though an official translation of the constitution was sourced. I would like to know your explaination on how the official site for the Agadir city commune isn't "authoritative" and how the MAP isn't "subject to editorial control". Do other languages that encounter pedagogic "challenges" lack verifiability by your standards? NAADAAN (talk) 20:18, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- I am uncertain about the ruling on whether or not images can be interpreted and cited as sources. However, I have not been able to find any mention of "ⵛⴰⵇⵔⴰⵏ" in any websites or articles on Google. Furthermore, your assertion that
"proper nouns wouldn't change based on dialect of Tamazight"
lacks substantiation. Contrary evidence exists: Algiers is known as "Lezzayer" in Kabyle according to Kabyle Wikipedia, while it is referred to as "Dzayr" in Tashelhit according to Tashelhit Wikipedia. Different names can also be observed in the Tashelhit and Kabyle Wikipedia articles for Tangier. Like I said, the Agadir city commune website seems like a promotional website, making it more suitable for inclusion as an external link at the end of the article, rather than being cited as a source. I didn't claim that the MAP source you provided lacks "editorial control". My concern is that it's entirely written in Tifinagh script, rendering it incomprehensible and inaccessible to readers and editors. Skitash (talk) 23:39, 5 April 2024 (UTC)- I think the fact that Chakrane is a village of 6,000 people could explain why it's underrepresented in search results, even in French. Either way, WP:OBSCURE. About the Agadir city commune site, even if it was promotional -- which I doubt, it looks more like an eGov portal, saying that Agadir is written as "ⴰⴳⴰⴷⵉⵔ" isn't exactly WP:ECREE.
- Focusing on Morocco: the Tamazight article says Dzayr (ⴷⵣⴰⵢⵔ), it's Dzayr in Tachelhit Wikipedia, and it's Dzayer in Tarifit Wikipedia. There are number of people who edit Tamazight Wikipedia, correct? Would they not be able to verify the names on the English Wikipedia? A lot of them are members of this exact WikiProject on English Wikipedia and if this is such an impossible task that it requires content removal then it defeats the point of even having a Tamazight Wikipedia. Furthermore, if you are concerned about it being "entirely written" in Tifinagh, I can concede to adding an ALA-LC romanization like with Aziz Akhannouch. NAADAAN (talk) 03:03, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

- I think the confusion may stem from what you proposed in the discussion:
- Comment: Just because a language doesn't have a standardized spelling doesn't mean it should be given less prominence than it otherwise would be given, and neither should languages with standardized spelling be specially priviliged. IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 18:41, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- I'm rather indifferent... While @Skitash brings good points, they seem somewhat biased to me. I say that, if we are to include Tifinagh transcription, it should be present in a way that is sensitive to the previously discussed topics. There is definitely a lack of standardization, but, as @IOHANNVSVERVS mentions, this shouldn't merit special privileges, to an extent. All in all, I think the information could be important to host, however, we should be cautious in how. For example, including notes or warnings next to said transcriptions. What I want to consider most here is its notability.
— Urro[talk][edits] ⋮ 22:21, 6 April 2024 (UTC)- I think that notability is proven at the given moment that at least a quarter of the population speaks a dialect of Tamazight, that the Moroccan constitution recognizes Tamazight as a language equal to Arabic, that an institution was charged with standardizing Tamazight, as well as there being an entire legal framework around the use of Tamazight in government with Tifinagh being the script used in Government.
- Sure, there are challenges you can observe from a language that began being standardized just over twenty years ago -- but I have never seen this be an argument for omission, there are languages in much more dire places when it comes to educational challenges or lack of standardization that's still included on Wikipedia. My proposal remains the same (include the Tifinagh inscriptions used by local governments for places, and employers or news reports for people as they are the most authoritative); but I deplore the fact that I haven't gotten in-depth criticism of my proposal despite the ongoing conversation. NAADAAN (talk) 04:24, 7 April 2024 (UTC)
- I agree that there seems to be a sense of notability on the topic.

- I agree that there seems to be a sense of notability on the topic.
- Comment: As I previously said ([1]), I think relevance (or notability) is easy enough to establish here for many cases (e.g. for place names). I do feel, however, that to ensure competent transcriptions (and to avoid arbitrary back and forth changes) under the present circumstances, some form of verifiability is needed.
- So I wonder if other editors could also comment more directly on the verifiability concerns? Do we need citations to sources to verify Tifinagh transcriptions? If so, what kind of sources are acceptable? Thanks, R Prazeres (talk) 16:47, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: FYI, the Permanent Committee on Geographical Names for British Official Use issued a guide two years ago for Neo-Tifinagh romanization, this includes a list of "Approved Names" for places in Morocco in Tifinagh. I think this is reliable, I added Tifinagh text back onto Morocco pursuant to that and an official translation of the constitution. NAADAAN (talk) 02:22, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support: If a language is spoken somewhere by an indigenous population, their names for these places should be included. As for the points made by @Skitash:
- Transcriptions of Arabic Abjad also lack standardization, there are several different transcription standards that are being used in Wikipedia and in almost all cases, the official name does not abide by these standards. Accordingly, this argument doesn't hold any merit for this case. Popular transcriptions are mostly a simplified approximation and do not follow scientific transcription standards
- The MOS:FORLANG is only relevant for the lead sentence though, this RfC is about the general inclusion in the article.--Ermanarich (talk) 12:06, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- Comparing the standardization of Tifinagh with the Arabic alphabet is inane. Snowstormfigorion (talk) 18:36, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose, per Skittish; Tifinagh transcriptions and transliterations are non-verifiable. As elaborated by R Prazeres, this is the main concern and the issue at hand. Snowstormfigorion (talk) 18:33, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- Skittish? Furthermore, there are a number of WP:RS Tifinagh transcriptions; if it was truly an impossible task, a Tamazight Wikipedia as we know it would not exist... I'd like for you to elaborate further NAADAAN (talk) 02:05, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
