Would you make a request at the Phabricator?

I want a new software feature, a new user right, called Signature manager, which can modify other user's signatures, but not IPs. I want the modification tool to be located at either Special:SignatureManager or Special:UserSignatureManager. 50.38.50.112 (talk) 04:35, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

Why not suggest this at the Village Pump? I think that this would be a good place to suggest your idea first so that you can gauge user input and participation and whether or not this is something that the community would likely want to have created. Otherwise, you're just creating a feature request in a development workflow platform that will sit in a large bucket of other feature requests. I'm not trying to imply that a feature request is a bad idea or that nobody reviews or looks at them, but if you want to see how far your thoughts and ideas would realistically go, discuss it at the village pump :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:34, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Is this a legitimate use of the user sandbox?

Hi,

I've just come across User:Hori-goo/sandbox. The first revision is a copy of Iggy Pop, with subsequent revisions being Japanese translations, which have now been implemented on the Japanese article. Is this allowed here, or should it have been done on the Japanese Wikipedia? Thanks. Adam9007 (talk) 16:15, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Adam9007! It's good to talk to you again! Sorry for the delay with getting back to your question here; I'm just getting caught up with my messages after being a bit busy with real life stuff... good times (lol). I don't see a problem with it; after all, that's pretty much the purpose of a sandbox page - it's a place to test and make sure things work and use to aid with Wikipedia or WMF-related tasks. It looks to be project-related work to me, and even if it may not be directly used to improve this version and language of Wikipedia, it's still improving the overall project as a whole... which is perfectly fine by me ;-). Let me know if you have any more questions or need my input on anything else and I'll be more than happy to help. I hope life is treating you well and I wish you happy editing. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:44, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Table of contents

Why do tables of contents appear on Wikipedia pages after four headers? —Eli355 (talk) 17:19, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Because that's how they are supposed to work. Are you having issues with the TOC somewhere? - BilCat (talk) 02:02, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
Hi Eli355! It's only included after four section headers are added to the article due to there typically not being a need for a table of contents with three or less sections added (with that few of headers, the TOC usually just gets in the way and isn't used). If you need to have the table of contents included on a page and despite there being less than four section headers, just add "__TOC__" (without the quotes) to the top of the page and the WikiMedia Software will render one when the page is loaded. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any help and I'll be more than happy to lend you a hand ;-). I hope you're having a good day and I wish you happy editing. Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:55, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Important Changes to be done ASAP

Hi Oshwah,

The changes which I want to make is very important as I did mentioned in the reason Box after editing that In Islam it is a Compulsion to Write/Say (Peace Be Upon Him) after taking/writing the name of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

So if we don't edit this or you can say correct it the way it is suppose to be then we are hurting the sentiments of the people who follow Islam.

Hence request you to do the needful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rashid.ladaf (talkcontribs) 11:38, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Rashid.ladaf, and thanks for the message. Sorry, but you need to review Wikipedia's policy on wording article content to reflect neutral point of view. Adding "(Peace Be Upon Him)" after the person's name obviously introduces content that is not in compliance with this policy, as it aims to speak favorably about the person. This is not content that should be added; please do not add this text any further, take some time and review the policy page I've linked for you here, and let me know if you have any questions about anything stated on that page. I'll be more than happy to answer any questions and assist you should you need it. Thanks again for the message and I appreciate your understanding and your cooperation in this matter. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:51, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Overly robust, again

Oshwah, apologies for again being slightly over robust in my remarks; this was purely a reaction to the fact that dealing with spammers etc on a daily basis is dispiriting enough, without our *ahem*  :) elders and betters helping them! I stand by the principle of my remarks—but acknowledge a degree of unnecessary forcefulness. Sorry about that, —SerialNumber54129 paranoia /cheap sh*t room 16:04, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Serial Number 54129 - You did the right thing by speaking up when you felt that something wasn't right and you did it with the project's integrity and best interest in mind and as your first priority. That's something that I'll never hold against someone (even if I disagree) and you owe me absolutely no apologies for that. Your response was absolutely correct and I should have been more diligent and saw that this wasn't just a content-related issue, but a WP:NPOV and possible WP:COI issue as well... "Forceful"? "Robust"? Sure, a little bit. I saw through that though - you conveyed the right message, and I completely understand how dealing with spam and similar disruption can grow on you like that ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:12, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Recent change to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loch_Ness_Monster_(roller_coaster)

Hello,

I recently edited the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loch_Ness_Monster_(roller_coaster) article to update a section containing the date of an incident that happened on that ride. I received a message (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:24.131.5.126&redirect=no) from you stating that you undid the change because a citation wasn't provided.

In the article, the date of the incident is listed as "Saturday 13, 1988". The citation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loch_Ness_Monster_(roller_coaster)#cite_note-8) on the second to last sentence in the same paragraph mentions the actual date of the incident (June 13, 1989). This was deduced by noting the article's publication date of June 15, 1989, referencing the following paragraph in the article:

> About 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, a tree was blown onto the track by high winds accompanying the first of two intense thunderstorms. A train loaded with 25 passengers then slammed into the tree, sending five people to Williamsburg Community Hospital.

and looking at a June 1989 calendar to see that Tuesday refers to Tuesday June 13, 1989.

If the same citation can be used multiple times in the same article, then I can update my edit to cite the same article. If not, then what is the best way to make the edit?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.131.5.126 (talk) 06:44, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi there! Oh, no problem at all! I took a look at the reference you referred to above and it definitely states the date that you modified the content to reflect. I think that the citation that already exists is perfectly fine; no need to do anything else. I went ahead and restored the changes you made to the article. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and I apologize for any confusion that my reversion and warning caused. If you have any further questions or if you need help with anything else, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to do so. This is why I reverted these changes. Why are you removing this content, and why are you replacing it with content that isn't cited or supported by any references or sources? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:34, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Uveitis Revision

Hello Oshwah.

I am messaging to inform you that my edit to the Uveitis page was not done with the intent of vandalism and I would argue it was very much a constructive revision.

I am an ophthalmologist and have been for the past 27 years in which I have encountered many cases of Uveitis and other similar ailments affecting the eye.

It is indeed true that Uveitis causes bleeding from the tear ducts as I have witnessed firsthand on numerous occasions and I request that the article be amended to include this symptom.

Apologies for any misunderstandings :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flipthelibrarian (talkcontribs) 09:35, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Movie review content is totally wrong and based on raw data . you described in first four lines that it is recommended by some critics as watchable movie but actually anty movie never critic appraised the movie. Even at imdb website it is in disater category. there is no official record of review by initial four lines in that content . why you people are spreading false. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.248.94.216 (talk) 09:39, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Change made on Peter Sarnak's page

Hi, I'm not exactly aware of how sources work on Wikipedia; however the change I made to Peter Sarnak's page was one that was already discussed in the Talk page thereof; I took the liberty of making it because I was in the possession of a new source that cut short the debate on whether the previous source was nice enough. You can see it on the talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A01:CB00:688:9A00:1D87:2EA0:755B:9A75 (talk) 22:28, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Revoked editing of the page, Timi Hansen

Hello Oshwah. The reason I edited my father's page (Timi Hansen) is because I'm his daughter, Emilie. I felt my dad's page was very thin, so I wanted to add in some more, and eventually add in the stories he's given me from his old days with Mikkey Dee, Andy, King, Denner and Hank. Only source I'm able to provide, is myself. If you want any proof, I'll happily try and oblige and send you what you need. (Hope I am doing this right, I've never used Wikipedia before.) About a longer protection for Santa Clause 3

Hello,
In The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, the same vandalism has been regularly added by many IP users and new accounts, since 25 December 2016‎, with big consequences in the history and the protection log of this article. It seems that your last semi-protection was too short (1 day, whereas the previous semi-protection lasted 6 months). Could you set a longer semi-protection?

@RoxyPaw: Hmm. You may be violating Wikipedia policies WP:CIO (you are closely related to the person) and WP:NOR (no original research). The information should be published in a reputable source so people can check the info's accuracy. XYZt (talk) 01:39, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
@XYZtSpace: The info I put in about me and my brother were accurate, as we're living and breathing. But I get your point, XYZ. Sorry if I may have caused problems, it wasn't my intention and thank you for the reply! RoxyPaw (talk) 01:41, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
RoxyPaw, there are two problems with your edit. One, mentioned above, is WP:COI, but that could be worked with. The other problem is insurmountable. Encyclopedias (all, not just Wikipedia) are, by definition, tertiary. We do not write about the subject of an article per se. Instead, what we write about is what has been written about the subject of the article. Nothing you know can ever be used here. So, unless you can persuade a reliable secondary source to write about your dad, and interview your family in the process, your family memories will unfortunately have to remain just that. LTA

Hey Osh, I tagged Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Cruizir for deletion under G5, but for clarity's sake in the future, is there a specific user these can be tagged as? Home Lander (talk) 02:31, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Home Lander - Nah, just delete it and don't give it much thought at all. Else we're just giving him what we wants - no thanks lol ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:36, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Bad choice of words on my part. I meant for when tagging it for deletion as G5 in Twinkle, in case some other admin doesn't recognize it. Home Lander (talk) 02:41, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Home Lander - Nah, you're over thinking it - just tag for G5; we'll know... trust me ;-). WP:DENY, when applied properly and completely, goes beyond just ignoring the gouges and stabs that trolls make and to not feed them - but also to the level where we don't give them a single drop of our time, our energy, our thoughts, our efforts, and our reactions beyond what's needed in order to "scoop the poop". You'll notice that I didn't cite a CSD criterion in the deletion or protection logs, I didn't leave any block templates or do any tagging, and I put as generic of a block reason as possible to explain it for others (I don't even use the word "LTA" in the block log). If it gives them a microgram of satisfaction and a millisecond longer of fame, I steal it all from them ;-). I give absolutely nothing more than what's required because it's what they want, and I know that it pisses them off to see their efforts to troll get kicked aside so fast and without a drop of effort that nobody even notices or bats an eye. THAT, my good sir, is how you apply WP:DENY to the maximum and like a fucking pro... lol ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:01, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

It’s just kind of ridiculous that we have to provide sources for information that is factual. I understand you want to make sure the information is correct for people to come to Wikipedia to do research, but anyone who doubts the information I provided can confirm it on at another resource. Hi Goleirovoador, and thanks for leaving me a message here. I understand that this is frustrating, but Wikipedia's policy on the biographies of living people require that content - especially if contentious - must be referenced by a reliable source. Provide one, and you're all set. Since you're new here, I want to take the opportunity to welcome you here. I highly recommend that all new users go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial. It provides you with walkthroughs, guides, and assistance with getting familiar with Wikipedia, how things work, the policies that are important, and how to navigate and participate with the rest of us. You'll be at a great disadvantage if you don't! If you have any questions or need help with anything after you complete the tutorial, please don't hesitate to message me here and I'll be more than happy to help you. Again, I welcome you to Wikipedia, I hope that you take my advice and go through the tutorial, and I wish you happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:57, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

No big deal but I thought I would comment that maybe I am missing something from current culture but I don't understand why a few users continue to add he is an android to his article. Donner60 - HAHAHA!! I figured some people (including Sro23) would get a kick out of that message ;-). Thank you for the kind words. I also don't understand what the deal is with people adding that stuff to Bryan Dechart... super random... but you're probably right in that there's an esoteric reason behind doing so. I hope you're having a great day, and I'm sure we'll run into one another again very soon. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:22, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Tim Howard edit

First of all, you have no seniority to address me in any manner. Besides, are you a Wikipedia employee, listen here bruh... I was so hype about getting the opportunity to edit one of the greatest USA players of all time, and now, I’m so discouraged to even use this site or help edit it when I can’t even do so correctly. I know this site has been edited to have false info in the past, but if should be up to you read someone’s edits and decide whether they are telling remotely the truth....... Goleirovoador (talk) 04:13, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Goleirovoador - First of all, I noticed that you accidentally left this message while logged out, and your IP address was added to the history instead of your username. To protect your privacy, I went ahead and redacted it for you so that it's not visible to the public. I'm sorry that you're frustrated and upset that your edit was reverted, but it's my responsibility to make sure that content added to articles of living people are referenced by a reliable source to establish verifiability and accuracy with the content that's added. This policy applies to all editors here (even myself); I didn't revert your changes in order to pick on your or to discourage you. I left a reply to your first message above; it's your choice if you wish to take my advice and want to become proficient with how things work here and to become an involved member of the community. I hope that you do; I feel that your passion with updating the biographies of these kinds of people would be an asset to this project and (with some learning and some coaching) you'd do wonderfully here and I'd be more than happy to help you. Again, the ball's in your court; I can only show you the right paths to venture down... it's you who must be willing to walk through them. If you have any questions or need any help, please let me know and I'll be happy to help :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:17, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi

I have a press Release from my attorney that the press never published. Basically all the information from all the sources was never investigated and they just repeated the last article. No research was done. And the attorney generals office information is wrong. They don’t even have the Main prosecutor down. He was removed from the record so it’s not true. I’d like my attorneys press release added. It can be gotten at www.charlenemcmann.com. The whole conviction was a lied and I was targeted. I did nothing criminally wrong and I told the judge that. I’ve spoken to Senators, judges and even the president. www.charlenemcmann.com

Hi! Could you please explain why you reverted all the changes I be done on this article?? I thought that the sources I used are acceptable as they are in other articles!46.103.9.19 (talk) 08:46, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Because I screwed up and reverted your edits unintentionally. I've removed the warning left and restored your changes back to the article; those edits were performed completely by accident. Please accept my sincere apologies for the mistake, and please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions or concerns - I'll be more than happy to help you. Thank you leaving me a message about this; I hope that the revert I made wasn't too disruptive... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:49, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

In fact User:Mykanah moved the article back to Draft-space after I AfD'd it, thus derailing the process. If it had been in draft space, I'd leave it to the Draft crowd. Shit happens, but I'm not quite that careless. Kleuske (talk) 09:38, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Kleuske! Oh dear... I hope that what I did made no implication that I felt that you were careless, and I sincerely apologize if anything I did conveyed or implied this in any way - that was absolutely not my intent. I know you well enough to know that you're absolutely not careless :-).
Ohhhhhh..... I see..... I didn't notice that..... Thanks for sharing this. Definitely puts things into better perspective. Now it all makes sense.... It was a conspiracy and I was set up from the very beginning!!!! :-P ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:41, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Kleuske - I echo the same exact feelings in that I don't get offended or upset about anything that happens here. ABOUT ME DELETION

You deleted a page I just created about myself, may I know why please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by PRINCEOWEMS (talkcontribs) 12:07, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi PRINCEOWEMS, and welcome to Wikipedia! Please see this deletion criterion for more information - basically, you cannot add content whose purpose is to advertise or promote. This includes self-promotion, and things such as resumes. Instead of jumping into article and page creations and moving the cart before the horse, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial. It provides you with guides and walkthroughs that teach you very important things that you should know before you begin writing articles. It helps you with how to leave messages, find Wikipedia's policy pages (and teaches you the big and important ones), navigate through the site, ask for help - lots of things... and you'll be at a disadvantage if you choose not to. It's obviously up to you if you want to do this, but I will definitely say that you'll be missing out on important things if you don't. If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. Again, I welcome you to Wikipedia and I wish you happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:25, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

If you haven't reviewed Wikipedia's documentation and guide on what we consider as acceptable and reliable, I highly recommend that you do so. This guide can be found here. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:54, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

Special:Contributions/91.201.65.61

Hello. The IP, which you removed TPA from a few minutes ago, is a proxy, part of Special:Contributions/91.201.64.0/22 (which is range blocked on multiple language versions of WP), along with also currently blocked Special:Contributions/91.201.65.53 (blocked as a proxy by Berean Hunter) and Special:Contributions/91.201.65.60. So I suggest a lengthy range block. Cheers. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 11:23, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

There was a vandal attempt by User talk:Gfdfgfdg recently. He seems to be a sockpuppet of some kind. He vandalized this article and User:ClueBot NG promptly reverted the change. I'd request a Checkuser but it's too inconvenient at the moment. GerifalteDelSabana (talk) 06:48, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

GerifalteDelSabana - Sorry for the delay getting back to you here about this. Investigating... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:11, 8 July 2018 (UTC)
GerifalteDelSabana - Thanks again for leaving a message here and for expressing your concerns. I agree that this user and the edits they made ring a bell softly to me like they're a possible LTA. There's no question that this user vandalized the Wilhelm scream article as an anonymous user (the edit made by that IP) then used an account they just made to vandalize the article again. However, even when I take this into account - there doesn't exist enough evidence (or really... any kind of evidence) that I can use to assert to a level of certainty that the account is a sock puppet of another. The user also hasn't edited since their edit on June 27 and their account appear completely stale now. I'd keep eyes on the article just in case, but I'm pretty sure that the user just came by to vandalize a page and has since moved on. Thanks again for leaving me this message and for expressing your concerns, and I apologize again for the delay getting back to you. If you run into any more accounts that are causing disruption and cause you the same concerns regarding possible sock puppetry, please don't hesitate to file an SPI report to document this concern or message me on my user talk page here. I hope you have a great day and I wish you happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:02, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi, need your help. You deleted two entries in the central German cultural area article. I nonetheless would recommens to keep it.

The reference you suggest to delete is a German source concerning the development of standard German.

The other one is about the geographical regional dimension. Lausatia which is the eastern part of Saxony in fact has been administered by Saxony for centuries but as a politically separate entity. Thus, concerning the cultural traditions of this region and its history, one could arguably see it as something outside centeal Germany. Since central Germany is a cultural concept, this of course must stay controversial. Maybe one can find a good formulation to describe this more clearly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.247.248.139 (talk) 10:54, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns. I took another look the content in question and I was able to locate the cited reference you spoke of above. I apologize for the mistake and any confusion that I may have caused you - I must've managed to overlook the existence of that source, and the content shouldn't have been removed. I went ahead and restored your changes and I removed the warning that I left. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns and I'll be happy to help you further. Huggle new feature

Hello. I just want to let you know that in the coming version of Huggle (3.4.5), there will be a new feature of editing pages directly inside Huggle by pressing E. The edit form is more or less identical to Wikipedia online edit page interface. Thank you. ~ Abelmoschus Esculentus (talk to me) 11:30, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Abelmoschus Esculentus - Woah, hold on there... don't add it under the default key mapping for 'E' and change what that shortcut key does by default (which is to open an edit page window in the browser)! Instead, map it to 'Shift + E' or another shortcut key combination by default. This will introduce the new feature in a softer manner and will assure that users who aren't aware of this incoming feature don't have their workflow and what they're used to interrupted. This feature isn't replacing the ability to press a key and have the edit window open in a browser, is it? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:39, 8 July 2018 (UTC)
I guess that’s not the case. Yes, you can still bind your E key to open the browser and edit the page, but the default shortcut for this function has changed to alt + E and the default new Huggle edit shortcut has changed to E. You can still change it if you want. Maybe we’ll notify other unawared users about this issue. It’s still the prototype and under development. You want more non-automated edits, don’t you? ~ Abelmoschus Esculentus (talk to me) 12:59, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Hefner

Hello. I added sources to substantiate every statement I wrote. I was not introducing a personal point of view. You also stated that I did not supply sources for my edits, even though I did. I believe that adding Hefner's accomplishments as well as his criticisms provides balance to the lead. Hefner had no shortage of critics and it seems strange to omit them from the lead as the controversy around his lifestyle was so integral to his notoriety. Lirosheed (talk) 12:38, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Lirosheed, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns. The concerns I had with the edit was that I believed you were adding your own point of view to the article. The original reason stated for reverting that edit (not providing sources) was set incorrectly; I updated the article with a dummy edit in order to fix this. I'm taking another look at the edit you made; if I'm incorrect with my assessment of the edit, please accept my humble apologies and I'll have that edit restored for you. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to assist you. Thanks again for the message; I'm taking another look for you :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:43, 8 July 2018 (UTC)
Lirosheed - It looks like you restored the edit to the article which contains the sentence I had concerns with, but I also saw that you added sources to support this statement. While some of the words used still somewhat concern me, the addition of those sources makes these concerns much much less. Thank you for being apart of the community and for volunteering your time to expand the project - keep up the great work! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:49, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your question. See Wikipedia's guidelines on identifying reliable sources for assistance with locating, reviewing, and determining the reliability of a source and whether or not it meets Wikipedia's standards. Once you locate a source that meets the conditions or criterion specified in that guide, you can then cite the source in-line with the content you're trying to add and be in compliance with Wikiepdia's policies regarding articles that are biographies of living people. If you run into any questions about anything on the policy and guideline pages I provided for you, let me know and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. Thanks for the message, and I wish you good luck :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:56, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your question. To add a source to an article, you just need to start by reading this guideline page regarding how to locate and identify reliable sources that meet Wikipedia's standards and expectations. From there' you'll need to read through this guideline page on how to citing the sources you find in-line with the content you're adding to the article. In a nutshell: Once you locate, identify, and cite the source onto the article, you'll be all set and meeting very important Wikipedia policies by doing so :-). Question

Do you mind if I ask why you add dummy edits after someone self-reverts? I thought it won't let you rollback those, even if you try, since the edit has already been undone. Sro23 (talk) 21:55, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Sro23! Congratulations in advance on your RFA! Excellent question! I do this for many reasons...
Lets make an example: I add the word "POOP!" to an article and save the edit, then I edit the article again and remove the word (or revert my last change)... If you click on the rollback link and the edits are self-reverted, it'll fail and give the editor an error. The MediaWiki software does not detect if edits by the same user are self-reverted, and hence the rollback link stays and regardless if it'll actually do anything. I add a dummy edit to make my change the newest edit which removes that link, which saves other editors from continuing to click on it as well as automated tools from continuing to load it in their queues. Adding a diff also removes the "(current)" flag on the editor's contributions page for that edit, which helps users who are dealing with certain types of vandalism and disruption to know that this edit has already been rolled back or changed since theirs. Novice RC patrollers would be confused if I allowed the rollback link to stay and they click on it and get the error - I save them this trouble by removing the rollback link and on pages where I know that it's not needed.
Hope my response didn't confuse you too much... in a nutshell, it's for many different reasons that make a small to moderate positive effect on others and save them time :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:01, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

stop reverting pages

I am updating the players form the USA volleyball team with up to date medals/awards. Stop removing it, you did this on another page that was actually false on your part. SO stop it.

The movie "Breakdown" starring Kurt Russell cast correction

In the cast list, it credits Steven Waddington (British actor) as "Cowboy in Bank". That is incorrect! It was actually Steve Waddington (American actor, S.A.G.) who is also a singer, songwriter, guitarist, actor, voiceover artist and entertainer. This issue has popped up from time-to-time, but American Steve Waddington not only played in "Breakdown", but also with Kirk Douglas and Craig T. Nelson in "Take Me Home Again", an NBC TV Movie of the week (circa 1994 or so), as well as "Hollywood Safari" with Sam Jones and a few other projects before returning to live musical entertainment. https://www.SteveWaddingtonMusic.com

I should know, I AM Steve Waddington. At the time I made these films, I was the only Steve Waddington in S.A.G. (maybe still am!) STEVEN Waddington is an English actor, not registered with S.A.G. as far as I know. People have confused us over the years based only on name.

Perhaps you could have this corrected?

Thank you, --Steve Waddington104.172.10.51 (talk) 22:44, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Link has been removed. Primefac (talk) 22:54, 8 July 2018 (UTC)
@Primefac: User had tried to link it, and it went to the footballer Steve Waddington. I saw you removed the redlink (and we edit conflicted on this talk page). I added a comment to encourage caution to make sure it doesn't go back to the footballer. Cheers! --Policy Reformer(c) 23:16, 8 July 2018 (UTC)
@104.172.10.51: I think Oshwah and I both had some concerns with your edits and thus reverted them. But upon further review, IMDB confirms your assertions, and I've since corrected the article. It appears that you may be new to the project (and if you're not, apologize for the assumption), so here are some of the policies and guidelines that might be relevant to your edit:
  • When you made your change, you linked it to another article related to a non-actor. Instead, I've created a red link (pretend this is red) so readers aren't confused by being linked to a non-actor.
  • Wikipedia tries to use a neutral point of view, and since you may have a conflict of interest, you probably should be extra cautious when editing articles that concern yourself, since it can be hard to stay neutral about yourself (at least, that's what my family tells me when I brag too much).
  • In your edit summaries, and even on this page, you've listed a link to your personal website, which could be construed as a form of advertisement or spam that might not be appropriate for the project. That's why I struck out the link on this page.
  • By signing this page, you may have given out more information than you intended by linking your IP Address with yourself. If you desire, you can remain anonymous on the project. That said, given that you've already identified yourself, if you wish to really hide the edits on this page, you'll need revision deletion by an administrator or suppression by an |oversighter to hide your identity. If you desire to hide your identity, I recommend using the policy at the revision deletion or suppression links.
I do appreciate your efforts to correct the error, and hope that you can continue contributing to the project. Thanks for your time! --Policy Reformer(c) 23:11, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Canary Islands edit

You reverted my edit on Canary Islands saying "the content is cited. Please explain on the article's talk page why it should be removed", despite the full explanation for it being provided on the article's talk page. Why in the world would you revert the edit and ask for an explanation on the talk page without actually checking the talk page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.142.89.44 (talk) 23:40, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Shon Hopwood

You just reverted my added content on the Shon Hopwood article due to lack of sourcing. I tried to add the 60 minutes link as a source, but my phone rebelled, and I'm not smart enough digitally to figure it out. The info I added is worthwhile and appropriate. Can you pick it up for me? I can't even link the 60 Minutes thing here. That, too, got rejected. But I really hope you add it. That info belongs in the article. Vcuttolo (talk) 23:53, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Vcuttolo - Ahhh I see... you were trying to cite the interview itself from YouTube here. It's possible that you're having a hard time linking this video because of the copyright permissions set by the video's owner. Make sure that you take extreme caution and make sure that you verify the copyright status of the media and if using it here is allowed... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:41, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. You really are one of the good guys! We need more like you, really. My failed link was from the CBS transcript on the web, which contained a link to the 60 Minutes video. Google "60 Minutes Shon Hopwood" and it pops right up. But I can't even bring it here. Vcuttolo (talk) 00:44, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
Vcuttolo - No problem :-), and I apologize for the weird way that the warning was left. Not sure what happened. You may have to wait until you're on a desktop or different device before you can add the link. I know that mobile can occasionally have it's "dark sides" with specific things like this. Just remember that you need to verify the copyright permissions of that video before you add it as a reference here. I'm not an expert with copyrights, but it definitely is something Wikipedia takes seriously and that can get us in trouble if we violate them. See Wikipedia's guide on copyights for help with how to do this. If you need anything, let me know and I'll be happy to help you further. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:51, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
@Vcuttolo: Are you looking at this link? It requires a subscription to view, but likely is acceptable for citation per WP:COPYLINK, since it's posted by the copyright holder. However, it looks like that video has also been uploaded to other sites that don't require subscription, and those videos probably violate copyright. Linking to those videos (even though they seem "free") would be contributory infringement, and so linking to those other videos on Vimeo or Youtube would likely not be permissible. Not sure if the link I provided was the one you were looking at, so I'll just leave it here for you. Hope this helps.
P.S. User:Oshwah- Just got started on Huggle and I've been learning at lot from watching you work. Thanks for your great work. --Policy Reformer(c) 01:07, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Actually, the link was a different one. The one provided here goes directly to the pay-restricted video. My failed attempt at a source went to a very similar-looking CBS site, but it was a full transcript of the 60 Minutes segment, with a link to the protected video. Vcuttolo (talk) 01:29, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

@Vcuttolo: I think I found it. Does this look right? --Policy Reformer(c) 01:41, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Vcuttolo - I'm honestly not sure why you were left a final warning instead of with a typical one that simply asks you to cite your sources - please accept my apologies for that. What video are we talking about exactly? I don't remember reverting any kind of video, just an addition of text that didn't reference any sources was all, and that's way to fix ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:38, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

help

Can you assist me with editing the GRTC The Pulse article? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GRTC_Pulse).
Richmond VA recently installed a public transportation system called The Pulse.

Half the maps are backward. I have contacted my District Representative, City Council, GRTC, the media, etc etc etc.

No one appears to care.

But I have travelled around the world and am positive that -- for millennia -- public transit authorities follow an east/west, north/south map orientation. Richmond eschews this and appears to construe maps as art.

I placed a warning for Wikipedia users who are traveling that the maps are backwards.

You removed this information because . . . I can't figure that out.

Please help me figure out how to let people know they cannot trust the maps that comprise the entire back wall of the bus stops without offending you.

Thank you Viochita

Can't log in

Hi Oshwah, it's PM here. I'm having some trouble logging into my account and I was hoping that you could help me please.

A few weeks ago, I got a notification that someone had tried to log into my account. As it turns out, I was not alone; hundreds, if not thousands of other editors had been similarly affected. I changed my password as a precaution and thought nothing more of it until today when I upgraded my mobile phone. I edit (almost) exclusively from a mobile as I do not have a permanent internet connection in my home. I went to log into Wikipedia on my new phone and found that I could not remember my password. I went into password recovery and entered my e-mail address only to get a notification that there was no e-mail registered for my account. I tried my other e-mail address—I only have two—and got the same message. Now I'm logged out of all devices on Wikipedia and cannot get back in. What would be the best thing for me to do? 1.129.109.178 (talk) 07:48, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) In general, if you cannot remember your password and have no email set, you are SOL. However, one option is to contact a checkuser (I recommend Bbb23) with your account name (it's not User:Pm who hasn't edited in five years). If they can confirm your IP has been used by you and only you recently, and other technical data matches, they may be able to advise further. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:04, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi. @Saradoll: has made, and probably will continue to make persistent disruptive editings on this article. I request for protection. Sebastian James (talk) 14:30, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Sebastian James - Thanks for the message, but I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to. What needs protection and why? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:32, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
I was just gonna write that 21 days have passed since the last disruptive editing, but the user did it again today. What a coincidence! Sebastian James (talk) 20:39, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
Sebastian James - I just left a message on Saradoll2000's user talk page and talked to the user about the problem. In order to help encourage the user to participate in the discussion, I highly recommend that you start a discussion on the article's talk page and ping the user so that they can join. It'll save them the work of having to start that discussion (assuming they might be new here) hence increasing the probability that they'll listen and respond. Hopefully this will work and the user will participate. If they don't participate and discuss the dispute and they continue changing the article as they've been doing, let me know. Make sure that the information being changed is cited by reliable sources and (also just as important) make sure that those sources support and state or list the same data on the article. I often see new users make changes to data on articles without referencing any sources and where I thought the user was either being disruptive or modifying correct data to now be incorrect, only to find the opposite - the user was actually fixing data that was already well referenced but changed to be incorrect by someone else previously ;-).
Oh, and on an unrelated subject - make sure that you're signing your messages using four tiles (~~~~), not three. I noticed that your signatures are missing timestamps next to them and this is what happens if you add only three tildes instead of four ;-). Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:56, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

In any other form of dispute that is not covered on the dispute resolution page, please seek assistance at Wikipedia's Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Sourcing

What type of sourcing does Wikipedia like? Chicago/Turabian? How do we cite web-based content? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:548:C100:BA4C:4925:6BCE:2C29:8EAE (talk) 03:54, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) See WP:CITE. General Ization Talk 03:56, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your questions. Wikipedia has two guide pages that will help you with exactly what you're asking about. The first guide will help you to identify reliable sources, which are the sources Wikipedia prefers over others on articles. Finding sources that are reliable is a task that is just as important as how you actually cite them with your edits, so make sure that you read through this guide page and verify that you understand it. Wikipedia also has a guide to help you with citing sources in-line with the content you're trying to add or modify. In a nutshell, you'll add <ref></ref> tags on each side of what you are going to cite in-line as a reference and you'll do this next to the content you're adding to the article. You'll also want to read this section (as an example) where you can use a template inside of the ref tags to have the information that should be included in a reference formatted for you - this template formats a reference that is a web page. I went ahead and created example of how to add a reference for you below:
Example of adding a reference
<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.example.com/example_page|title="Example reference page title"|publisher=Example Publisher (name of company or site)|last=Last name of the publisher of reference|first=First name of the publisher of reference|date=Jan 1, 2005|accessdate=May 1, 2018}}</ref>
Again, you'll want to refer to that guideline page for the information you're looking for, but in a nutshell - it's not too bad. Let me know if you have any questions after reading through the page I linked you to above, and I'll be happy to answer them. I wish you a great rest of your day and happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:00, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Block with reason WP:NOTHERE? ~ Abelmoschus Esculentus (talk to me) 04:25, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Abelmoschus Esculentus - Oh man... this user looks like he's not sure of what he's doing at all... I'd say before we jump straight to any kind of block, lets assume that he's just lost and needs help and offer some help to the user. Try leaving a message on his user talk page and asking what the user's intentions are, if they need help with anything, etc. as well as point them to the new user tutorial so they can go through it. Their response (or lack of one) might help us figure out what the user is trying to do. Otherwise, if the account just goes stale (as most like this one do) then no need to block (obviously), but I think that going as far as to say that the user is WP:NOTHERE is too soon - especially when we're not sure of the user's intentions :-). Keep me updated and let me know what happens ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:40, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Recent removal of content on the "Regular Polytope" article

Hello, I recently removed the paragraph in this article that was talking about how the universe could be a regular polytope. It was implicitly talking about Poincare dodecahedral space, which is obtained by taking the faces of a regular dodecahedron, twisting one of each pair of opposite faces by 36 degrees and gluing them together; the result is clearly not a regular polytope. The paragraph doesn't mention any other sort of cosmological model that fits what it is saying. It also uses what I would consider very informal language: it uses the term "higher polytope" to mean "higher dimensional polytope," even though the dodecahedron is three dimensional, it also, for no apparent reason, brings up the fact that string theories have more than 4 dimensions. This, as well as the fact that, according to https://arxiv.org/abs/1502.01593, the universe doesn't appear to have non-trivial topology, make the entire paragraph justifiable only as pure speculation. It seems as though it was written to enthrall the reader rather than inform them. I meant to mention all this when I edited the section, but I accidentally did not because I very rarely edit articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:E000:1303:417D:1C88:8A1A:EFD4:9CD4 (talk) 05:24, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi there! Thanks for leaving me a message and for explaining the reason behind the content removal you performed. The main reason that I was concerned was that you didn't explain this removal using the edit summary. You'll want to do this with the edits you make, as edit summaries help other editors to see and understand what you're doing and the reason why. You're welcome to go back and remove the content if you believe that it's inaccurate - just make sure and use the edit summary to explain. If you have any more questions or concerns, please let me know and I'll be happy to help you further. Thanks again for leaving me a message and for explaining your edit. I hope you have a great day and I wish you happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:27, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Anne Hutchinson

Thank you for your intervention on Anne Hutchinson; as one of the the protagonists in the dispute, might I invite you to revert to the last version by my antagonist Dilidor which is an improvement on the last reversion by the deus ex machina Mr. Guye (while, of course, also updating the recently corrected external link).

Also John Cotton (minister) is even more in need of pp-dispute intervention. Thank you. Nedrutland (talk) 07:29, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Nedrutland! Thanks for the message and for the kind words. I'm glad that the protection put an end to the disruption and I hope that it encourages everyone involved to resolve the dispute properly on the article's talk page. Unfortunately, as the protecting admin, I cannot revert the article to a different revision unless the current revision is violating a Wikipedia policy such as copyright, BLP, or another serious policy. Otherwise, I'd be playing favorites and choosing a side by choosing a "preferred revision" over another which is against Wikipedia's protection policy. It would also compromise my actions here as they would be seen as non-neutral, which is definitely not something that I want to have happen. Make sure to participate in the discussions on the article's talk page and help the dispute come to a positive consensus. If there are edits that everyone agrees need to be made to the article while it's protected, just make an edit request and have the other users involved add their endorsement and the edit will be handled no problem. If you have any more questions or concerns, don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to help. Thanks again for the message, and I hope the dispute comes to a positive and fair close :-). Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:40, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
As I had previously commented on the Talk page, by reverting to an ancient version, Mr. Guye was favouring one side - the one that is unwilling to see any changes. Oh well.
And John Cotton (minister)? Nedrutland (talk) 07:50, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Nedrutland - Woah, be careful there... what's with all the reverts between you two? Looking through the recent edit history on that article, an admin would've definitely blocked the both of you for edit warring and violating 3RR had someone seen this during the time that it was going on (i.e. July 10, July 9, July 6, July 5...) - I highly recommend that you stop making any more reverts to the article and that you start a talk page discussion and ping the other user there if you haven't already. I'm going to hold off on protecting the article for now, as the previous edit warring on July 10 has stopped and I'm hoping that it won't continue. You definitely got off lucky by not getting blocked for these past edit wars... I'd take this response as a "wake up call" and I wouldn't push your luck there any further. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:04, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
You will see there is a Talk discussion but it has not been very fruitful as few specific objections are made (except some examples of things he does not think need linking, mostly which I have for now in a pacific spirit de-linked). In ten years or so on here, I have never been involved in any dispute like it but any edit no matter how uncontroversial (removing redundant parameter from the infobox, for example) is automatically reverted. Nedrutland (talk) 08:15, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Nedrutland - That's good that you started a talk page discussion (I just finished skimming through it). What I would do is ask for input from other involved editors on this page so that it doesn't stay at this "I'm right, you're wrong" back-and-fourth argument between the two of you. This way, more input is provided and by uninvolved editors, and a consensus is more likely to be reached due to other editors discussing this as well. This will definitely be a big help :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:24, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for the suggestion. I have looked back through five years of edits but precious few editors seem to have been properly involved in improving it; nevertheless I have pinged a few (including you, of course). Nedrutland (talk) 09:03, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Nedrutland - You bet :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:04, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

removal of protection on dawood ibrahim

hi,

i request that you please remove the protection on the article about Dawood Ibrahim as it is currently unwarranted. discussions are presently taking place about the article (which i invite you to take a look at) and the so-called "persistent disruptive editing" is false and i believe to be a deliberate attempt to escape confrontation about their illegal reverts to valid edits. i would like to bring to your attention how this user has been involved in conflicts with senior users about this supposed technique by which this user allegedly uses multiple IPs themselves to put on a facade of "persistent disruptive editing" and afterward ask for protection of those wikipedia pages in order to protect their own edits. this type of arrogant, shady behaviour is what limits the growth of wikipedia.

again, i recommend you look into the discussion (here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Dawood_Ibrahim#POV_in_lead) so you better understand that there was no such "persistent disruptive editing", rather it is this user who persistently disrupts edits by constantly reverting edits that do not suit their own beliefs and agenda.

thanks, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gangadesh721 (talkcontribs) 12:51, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Gangadesh721 - The article is only protected with pending changes protection; it doesn't restrict anyone from editing the article. All it does is require edits that are made by anonymous users or non-confirmed accounts to be reviewed and approved before that revision of the page becomes available to the public to read. You should be able to edit the article as you normally would. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:17, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
thanks for your response. i am aware of the type of protection and the safeguards against vandalism it entails but i have reservations about the neutrality of the review process especially if it is being reviewed by people with biases regarding the article at hand. for some people, discussion regarding Dawood Ibrahim is a contentious and polarising topic and would appreciate if it was not necessary to delve deeper into that in order to make simple edits. If you still think that the article should stay protected, are there any assurances you can provide that the review process of edits will be neutral?
thanks, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gangadesh721 (talkcontribs) 13:26, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Gangadesh721 - Only approved users with the pending changes reviewer rights are able to review and approve or decline pending changes to pages or articles. These are users who are granted the rights only after demonstrating a consistent and proficient editing history that shows that they have the knowledge, experience, and ability to use the tools correctly and in compliance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Since your account is autoconfirmed, none of the edits you make will be required to be reviewed first. However, if your concerns are in regards to the edits made by others who are anonymous or not yet confirmed, I don't believe that they'll have any problems with having their edits approved so long as they are in compliance with Wikipedia's policies. Please let me know if you have any more questions or concerns and I'll be happy to help you further. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:42, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Fretlesssss, and thanks for leaving me a message here and for explaining your edit to 2Baba. You are correct - generally, it's better to replace something (remove and add) in the same edit rather than over two different edits. You're of course not required to do this at all - it just makes the editing history easier to read by other editors is all. You'll also want to explain each of your edits using the edit summary so that other editors will be able to see and understand what you're doing and why. If you do these two things, you'll run into less confusion and less "bumps" with other editors. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message and I wish you happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:02, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Help

This is Anonymous IP name is User talk:124.106.134.164 has been bullying me and personal attacks on User:LG-Gunther and Got this block on Anonymous IP is 124.106.134.164 and Disable talk page again, help LG-Gunther :  Talk  21:41, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

LG-Gunther - Alright, thanks for letting me know. I'll dig deeper and investigate for you. I just didn't see any personal attacks on your user talk page just a bit ago; it looks like I need to look deeper and further back. I've asked him to leave your talk page alone; you should also leave his alone and don't restore content he removes. If things continue, please let me know and I'll be happy to take a look and put a stop to it. Thanks again for the message; I'll make sure that the harassment stops one way or another... fear not ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:44, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Oshwah, I have made a 3RR report against the above editor. I should put the notice on his talk page, but as per your request I would rather not. Could you put the 3RR report template on his page so that I don't have to?

Also claims of bullying are just silly. My edit history is not long, you can check every single edit and summary that I have made and you will see that I have not harassed anyone. I made a couple of silly edits because my sources were not good. Now I have this person thinking he can control which messages I keep on my page. Thanks. 124.106.134.164 (talk) 21:52, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi there. It looks like you've already left the 3RR notice template on LG-Gunther's user talk page and he removed it afterwards. The template doesn't have to stay there; it just has to be left there to notify him. Since he removed the template, he's obviously aware of the report - no need to press it any further on him. There obviously seems to be tension between the two of you - I'd suggest giving him some space and leaving well enough alone if it can be helped. This way, you two don't keep clashing over and over where frustrations and anger can continue to grow. I hope things work out between you both and that you two try and talk things out peacefully and move on... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:00, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Check your talk page history, he's deleting my comments from here. He's also deleted the 3RR report from ani 3rr twice. 124.106.134.164 (talk) 22:02, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

I removed that bit of information because I felt like it was unnecessary and did not any contribution to the page. I'm sorry for any inconvenience. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Revivaloutsold (talkcontribs) 21:54, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Revivaloutsold! No worries, and thanks for leaving me a message and for explaining. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:15, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Am I missing something?

"it'll just be closed and a WP:BOOMERANG is imposed."

Why exactly would a boomerang be imposed? I'm having my talk page edit warred on. I'm making a 3RR report and someone deletes it. I'm having someone remove my comments from your talk page. I've done NOTHING to this guy - but I'm getting a boomerang? Any reason why? 124.106.134.164 (talk) 22:05, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

It was just a hypothetical situation that I was explaining. I was telling him that, "hey look... don't keep reverting 124.106.134.164... let him file that AN3 report. If you've done nothing wrong and you believe the report is an attempt to troll or harass, it'll be closed and 124.106.134.164 will be blocked..." I wasn't actually telling him that this was what was going to happen... Hope that makes sense. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:13, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for the explanation. I didn't see grounds for any sanctions against me, but it seemed as if they were implied. Also, he just removed more content from my talk page. Just for deleting the 3RR report he deserves sanctions. This is a clear cut deserved editing block. 124.106.134.164 (talk) 22:20, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

He's trying to apologize - let's at least try and give him the benefit of the doubt... I've added a comment to his apology, and asked him to lay off of you for a bit. Do the same for him, and you two will be able to cool off and not continue to butt heads :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:22, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Ok. Patience is a virtue and all that jazz. Too much drama over mere silliness. 124.106.134.164 (talk) 22:23, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Indeed it is. Thank you for your patience and working with me to help diffuse the situation... I'm sorry that this situation came about and that you were left annoyed with the repeated reverts and accusations... Hopefully he'll continue to leave you alone (and vice versa of course) and there won't be any problems. Happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:27, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Robert Marve

He has a warrant out for his arrest but I can't figure out why his page is locked. Jwsmith1979 (talk) 03:22, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

The page is protected, not locked. ~ Abelmoschus Esculentus (talk to me) 03:38, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Jwsmith1979 - The Robert Marve article is a biography of a living person (or "BLP" for short). Per policy, these articles have much stricter requirements regarding the addition and discussion of content, wording the article to reflect a neutral point of view, and the citation and use of reliable sources to support content added - especially if it's contentious in any way. If content like this is added to a biography of a living person - it must be referenced and cited by a reliable source. The article experienced repeated and very high-levels of edits that violated this policy and was semi-protected from editing in order to stop it.
I highly recommend that you review and understand this section of the BLP policy (if not the entire BLP policy page). Editors who add contentious content to a BLP without citing sources that meet the criteria outlined in policy are committing a very serious violation and can be subject to very serious sanctions and actions as a result. Don't add any kind of contentious content to articles of living people unless you've read and understand those policies completely and you're absolutely sure that your changes are in compliance with them. If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks for the message and I wish you happy editing :-). ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:27, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

The RJ Nieto article which you locked contains content that are cited to Facebook posts, the subject's website (thinkingpinoy.net) and a non-news unverified source (memebuster.net). Commiserations

I accidentally pressed on the "contributions" button without being logged in (something that I do fairly regularly - force of habit)

Today though instead of just seeing a blank page, I came across this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/2A02:587:0:0:0:0:0:0/32)

A person who you have banned due to disruptive edits.

This user is obviously Greek (like me) however I can confirm that I haven't made those edits (they are wildly unrelated to the subjects I contribute to).

Pardon my ignorance, but is this just a coincidence of matching dynamic IP's, or is it something I should worry about and take precautions against?

Thanks in advance.

An IP editor was claiming to be you at User talk:188.29.165.201. Luckily, suspicious admins were watching and declined his request. His filter log includes your name which may suggest you have some knowledge of this issue. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 20:18, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi EdJohnston! I apologize for the delay responding to your message here. I've been busy with real life and I'm just now getting caught up with all of my Wikipedia messages and emails ;-). The edit filter you mention was created and is maintained by me (that's why it has my username in the description). If you want any more details about the filter (as well as some good information and tips), shoot me an email. I don't want to disclose the in-depth information I can provide on a public forum... for obvious reasons (lol). Thanks for the message and for the heads up... definitely not the first time that someone said that they were me and that I "forgot my password", and no doubt that it won't be the last. Apologies

I added the information on the page "Impractical Jokers" as that was a nickname they referred to him in the show and I meant no offense or malice by adding it. If it was perceived as so I apologize and I will do more due diligence in the future to determine what is right to add to a page.

Kayor056Kayor056 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 00:08, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Kayor056! Thanks for the message! No apologies are needed; we were all new here once and mistakes in good faith (like these) are expected and a normal part of learning. As someone whose definitely made his fair share of mistakes over the years as an editor here, I can tell you that we don't (and won't) hold honest good-faith mistakes against you. Just make sure that you take any warnings, messages, or constructive feedback that's given to you with a positive attitude, take the time to review and understand any policies or guidelines that others point you to, and work to better yourself and learn from those mistakes so that they're not repeated - you'll do just fine here and you'll become proficient with Wikipedia in no time at all!
Here's two pieces of advice that I tell all new editors that I believe are absolutely crucial:
1. Go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial. This interactive learning wizard is the absolute best way to learn the ropes and become proficient with Wikipedia, the rules, and how things work around here. It provides you with simple and useful tutorials, walkthroughs, and exercises to help you with all of this.
2. The most important advice I can possibly give - if you have any questions, if you're stuck somewhere, or if you're not sure if you're doing something correctly (especially if you're not sure if what you're about to do is fully compliant with Wikipedia's policies) - ask someone.
That about does it! Thanks again for the message, and please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything - I'll be more than happy to help you. Welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you enjoy your stay and that you become a long-term and experienced editor with us! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:16, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Hello there and Welcome to Wikipedia! While I can't be sure why your userpage was deleted, I recommend reading WP:UP before proceeding to make another userpage. Also be sure to check out The New User Tutorial. Thanks! Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 21:45, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
Hi Viglobe, and thanks for the message. I deleted the user page you created for two reasons:
The first reason was because I was concerned about the information you were sharing, in that the information included links to your personal social networking pages and other personal information. I meant to leave you a message to let you know about this and explain my concerns in-depth; I most likely got sidetracked and distracted at the time and hence didn't end up doing so - my apologies for this. I highly recommend that you do not post any information onto Wikipedia that would link or provide details of any kind to others regarding your personal identity like this. It opens the door and makes it much easier for users to engage in harassment toward you and do so more effectively. See this page for more information as well as a list of other information that I urge you to use extreme caution and consider carefully before adding it to your account's user page (or anywhere on Wikipedia).
The second reason for doing so was because I felt that your user page, given that your account was just created at the time, appeared to be created and worded with the intention of using it for purposes not related to Wikipedia. Unfortunately, it's a frequent occurrence to see people create a new Wikipedia account and then immediately go and create a new user page with the sole intent to advertise or promote themselves, use Wikipedia as if it were a forum, resume, social networking profile, or web host - and for purposes unrelated to Wikipedia's goals, and not use the account to edit or contribute to the project. Please see Wikipedia's policies on user pages for more information regarding what is and is not allowed, as well as what the purpose of user pages are and are not for.
If you have any questions, or if you would like the links and personal information that you added to your user page to be removed and hidden from the public, let me know and I'll be happy to help you further. Thanks again for the message and I wish you a great rest of your day :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:33, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

I don't wanna get blocked, but this makes me mad!

If you don't read my account profile then you might otherwise be aware that I'm obsessed with This French cartoon from 1997. I've been on a bajillion websites and virtually every/any website mentioning that show will, did, or would refer to Candy with Male pronouns, I was okay with this, then I watched the show, and I was still okay with this, and theeen! I watched a 7 part walkthrough of the video game Stupid invaders, and that's where it was stated that Candy is transgender and wants to go back to their home planet for a sex change, so then after making the discovery I checked out the Space Goofs wiki page on them and it also used male pronouns (from what I remember), then there were these other websites and even CREEPYPASTAS referring to them with male pronouns (but here I'm using neutral pronouns to be inoffensive). Is this something that should be changed in Wikipedia or would you consider the video game to be a stand alone type thing? Emiship'05 (talk) 00:48, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

Emiship'05 - I respect that you're attempting to edit and update an article about a television show that you clearly show a high interest in, but when someone talks about how they want to update an article and change something that involves a highly contentious topic (i.e. guns, gender, race, or nationality to name a few), I respond by highly cautioning you from editing the article - especially when you say that you're "mad about it" or that your interest is otherwise beyond that of a typical neutral editor. Whether the TV show fiction or non-fiction is irrelevant; unless you have reliable sources to verify the information you're explaining here and know how to cite these sources as well as know and understand Wikipedia's important policies and guidelines very well (such as Wikipedia's policies on dispute resolution, neutral point of view, edit warring, discretionary sanctions, civility, and others) - I highly recommend that you make an edit request instead of trying to make those changes yourself. It will keep you out of getting involved in a "crossfire" with other editors who may have a bias or viewpoint regarding those topics. I know this is a complicated and long answer, but my recommendation will keep you in "safe waters" until you get yourself affiliated and proficient with all of the policies that I listed - then will you understand why I gave this answer. If you have any more questions or concerns, please let me know and I'll be happy to help you further. Thanks again for the message and I wish you happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:59, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Is the Space Goofs article breaking the MOS:GENDERID rule?

It's about time I let you know about this. So Candy (a character from the show) is referred to with male pronouns on Wikipedia. I watched a gameplay video of the video game Stupid invaders (which is based on the show), and in the game Candy mentions that they are transgender and wants to get sex reassignment surgery. In France male pronouns are gender neutral, and since the show was made in France I didn't question it, but the English dub still refers to Candy an effeminate male. So is this breaking a "law" on Wikipedia or am I just TOO obsessed with the topic in question? Atlantic Ranter 9705 (talk) 16:24, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Atlantic Ranter 9705! Sorry for the delay getting back to you here! Life's been busy for me and I'm just now getting caught up with all of my messages and Wikipedia emails :-). It sounds like there are a few issues here (assuming the information is accurate and true): One issue is that the article is describing the character with the assumption that the reader is not from Latin America by using the word "he" by default. This also becomes apparent when the description states that the character "gets in touch with his feminine side by sometimes disguising himself as a woman" - in the Latin American version of the show, it may be viewed that the female character "gets in touch with her masculine side...". Another (possibly bigger and more concerning) issue is that none of this information (the dressing as the other gender, the information stating that the Latin American version of the show portrays the character as a female, or the information that you described in your message here) is referenced by any sources at all... in fact, I was tempted to resolve these issues by removing all of that content (I added "citation needed" notices instead, though I'm questioning whether or not that was the right choice to make). Regardless, I went ahead and edited the description for you and fixed what I felt were issues that needed to be improved. You can view the exact changes I made by clicking here. I think that (minus the addition of references and any additional relevant information) the changes made resolve these problems and that the description is much improved. What do you think? Do you still have concerns? Let me know and I'll be happy to discuss it with you further if you do. Thanks again for the message, I apologize again for the delayed response, and I hope you have a great rest of your day. Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:07, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Atlantic Ranter 9705 - Also, I read through MOS:GENDERID, and I feel that this guideline isn't intended for this exact situation (where multiple versions of the same cartoon are produced in order to portray the same character as having a different gender depending on the country it's broadcast in). This style guideline appears to be intended for people or characters who are portrayed, represented, identified, or exist in one form (meaning that multiple versions of that person's existence aren't floating around - there is only one Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, Bill Gates, or Daffy Duck). The guideline states that, when there is a question of the person's gender in relevant situations (such as the articles of Chelsea Manning or Caitlyn Jenner for example), the article is to be worded to refer to that person, by default, according to the gender that they most recently announced or stated that they identify themselves as or that they've assigned to themselves. For example: if 100 reliable sources say that someone announced that they identify as a female, but one (or a few) reliable sources covering the person's latest or most recent statement(s) on the subject state that the person identifies as male, we are to word the article using the male gender identity of that person (including the assigned name that they go by). Hopefully my explanation of this guideline helps to clear up any confusion. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:56, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! [the link to a gameplay video that has the "Transgender info" in the very first cutscene AKA. A source], also my source is a cutscene from a game that's supposed to take place after the events of the show. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Atlantic Ranter 9705 (talkcontribs) 19:29, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
Hi Atlantic Ranter 9705! I would make sure that the sources you found meet the criteria outlined here. If it doesn't, we really can't use it to assert that the information being added is 100% verifiable, accurate, and true... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:59, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
I read the criteria/rule and you can use online videos as a source/references/link at the end of the article, the only thing I'm curious about right now is whether or not Wikipedia writes about fictional medias in a "canon" point of view, or in a "realistic" sort of way? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Atlantic Ranter 9705 (talkcontribs) 22:13, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
Atlantic Ranter 9705 - Good question... I'm not 100% sure what either "point of view" you describe refers to, honestly. The viewpoint that all article content must reflect is a neutral point of view above all else, so keep this policy in mind when asking or making a decision, or when you go to make updates or changes to the article. If you're still not sure, you might find the answer to your question by asking at the Wikipedia helpdesk. Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:15, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
Example; the Wikipedia page for the movie Heavy Traffic, it uses the word “transvestite” to describe one of the characters. Another example; Any page on Wikipedia that refers to a female fictional characters as a Nimphomaniac. Those terms could be seen as offensive or inaccurate to some people (including me, which also is the reason people think that I’m “vandalizing the site”). The only reason why I asked to edit the page in the first place, was because the foreign (French and Brazilian) articles mention that Candy is “transgender” in the video game Stupid invaders which takes place after the events of the show, making it canon (well to me at least). I do think that maybe YOUR “edit” was “not very good” to say the least. PS: I was not trying to vandalize Wikipedia, and I have good intentions! (That’s why I changed my name too!). PPS: I wasn’t concerned how Candy was described in “the world of the show” if that makes sense, I just wanted to know if you’d count Stupid invaders and Space Goofs in the same universe (because if you watched the cutscene then you’d might understand) (5:16) UTC — Preceding unsigned comment added by Atlantic Ranter 9705 (talkcontribs) 20:17, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
Atlantic Ranter 9705 - Again, I'm honestly not sure what terms should be used nor am I sure of the best way to express the content given this specific situation. We're talking about an animated cartoon and then adding issues of gender into the mix - something I'll admit that I have no experience with :-). You might find better luck by asking on the article's talk page in a new discussion, or possibly by asking your question at the help desk. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:10, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
Thank you Oshwah! I believe that the video link that I sent you COULD be used as a reference, as the “rule” does not seem to exclude YouTube videos. To be honest I think that your edit should be reverted by me! [FRENCH version of the Space Goofs Wikipedia article] does IN FACT read the info that I keep repeating, and most of all, I have found my answer before you can even respond to dis! PS. I created [female version of Daffy Duck on my Tumblr account], So yeah! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Atlantic Ranter 9705 (talkcontribs) 00:03, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Atlantic Ranter 9705 - That's your call and that's entirely up to you. I was only trying to help improve the article section and help answer your questions. I have no vested interest or involvement with the article or the topic areas at all. Do what you feel is correct. Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:12, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Abelmoschus Esculentus - Honestly, I've been meaning to for quite some time but I've just been busy with my involvement with current Wikipedia projects to take on more, and real life has kept me busy on top of all this. It's definitely on my "to do" list as far as new projects go someday, but (as with any new project) it needs to work and be beneficial for both myself and the community before I commit myself. I don't want to stretch myself too thin and be someone that's juggling too much and hence not involved to the level as each project needs me to be. I do my best to stay active as a helper and an expert user of Huggle, but at this time this is the level of involvement that I need to stay at. Question

While browsing the category for Twitch Streamers, I noticed this strange addition, leading to new user's sandbox. Judging by the user's name, he/she was either trying to create an article about him/herself, OR some fan was trying to do that for this user... Can such sandbox page be WP:PRODed or should I wait until this user will move this out of sandbox? Omgwtfbbqsomethingrandom (talk) 05:02, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @Omgwtfbbqsomethingrandom: there’s no need to do anything for now. If the user submits it to AfC, it’ll be declined. If the user moves it to mainspace someone will userfy or delete it. ~ Abelmoschus Esculentus (talk to me) 05:14, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Hi Omgwtfbbqsomethingrandom! Sorry for the late reply! Life has been keeping me busy lately ;-). Definitely a correct assumption in that the user was definitely trying to create a Wikipedia article about themselves or that person exclusively (the "online alias" name put in the article is the same as this account's username). The user has since blanked that page; I'm guessing the account is probably going to become inactive now... that's usually what I notice after they build up a page just like that and then blank it. If this isn't the case and you see any more shenanigans, let me know and I'll be happy to take another look. Thanks for the message and the heads up. Legal threat?

Hi,

Do you reckon this constitutes a legal threat? Thanks. Adam9007 (talk) 18:31, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Adam9007! My apologies for the late response here - life has kept me busy and I'm just now catching up with all of my Wikipedia messages and emails ;-). I saw that the diff you pointed to is now deleted, but I took a look at the deleted revisions and saw the revision you were talking about - his statement made toward you saying that "you are going to be reported to the authorities". Sigh... honestly, ...that's a very good question. While Wikipedia:No legal threats states that "[a] legal threat, in this context, is a threat to engage in an external (real life) legal or other governmental process that would target other editors", it doesn't define exactly what an "external (real life) legal or other governmental process" is, and hence the definition of a legal threat is left worded quite broadly in my opinion... and most likely kept this way intentionally.
The policy page discusses and focuses mostly on the situation where someone believes that an article (usually about them) contains content that they find to be "negative", "defamatory", or "libelous" - and they resort to making a threat (in one way or another) stating or strongly implying that they intend to take another editor, the Wikimedia Foundation, or something another (lol) to court in order to sue them for monetary damages. The policy page doesn't mention anything about the situation where someone threatens another that they intend to contact the authorities and have them reported and charged for a crime, but that absolutely doesn't mean that this user's statement doesn't fall under the policy as a violation of such.
When I've seen this threat made toward another user and coupled with that same user editing disruptively and causing turmoil, (depending on the situation, of course) I usually just block them for being disruptive, for WP:NOTHERE, or for harassment. In my experience, the users making that kind of threat are typically the ones causing the disruption and either failing to listen or are behaving this way purposefully in frustration or rage in order to "take others down with the ship" (so to speak).
The answer to your question is something I'll have to look into and ask about... To me, it comes down to: "what do we normally do when a user make this kind of threat?", "what have we done in the past regarding users who make this kind of threat toward another?", "What exact policy or rationale do we typically invoke or cite when taking action against someone for making this kind of threat?" In this case, I honestly don't know the answer... I'm going to ping Drmies, Kudpung, NeilN, Acroterion, and Ivanvector - each user I pinged is an admin that either I know have the answer to at least some of those questions listed in my previous sentence, or have had some kind of involvement in cases like these in the past and would have good input on this. Either way, I feel that you have a good question and I believe that finding the answer will involve looking at how we've handled similar situations and what's been discussed before... stay tuned! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:37, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Kudpung - That's what I've done before as well... I appreciate your input. Thank you :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:16, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
@Oshwah: Yeah, 'the authorities' could be anyone, including the courts or the Old Bill. So even if it is not a direct legal threat, they could be threatening go to someone who can. And therein lies the crux: does such a threat violate WP:NLT? It probably violates the spirit even if not the letter. I mean, it's not something silly like 'I'm gonna get you' as that's just harassment. 'The authorities' sounds a fair bit more serious, and if genuine, not something we can just laugh off. Phoenix Echo

The original entry--mostly provided by me--was quite accurate, but parts of it may still be classified. A colleague pointed this out to me and I decided to delete whatever I had previously entered rather than risk a security violation. Other readers may be able to shed some light on whether or not Phoenix Echo is still classified. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.45.147.117 (talk) 15:12, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, and thank you for the message. What you describe appears to constitute original research, which isn't allowed on Wikipedia. This aside, the main concerns I had with your edits was that you removed content from paragraphs and sections without explaining why. In the future, please describe and explain your edits using the edit summary input field when you make changes to Wikipedia articles or pages. This will help other editors and users to understand exactly what you're doing and why. It also makes it easier for other editors to jump in and help. If you have any questions, let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you happy editing. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:46, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Oshwah, A week or 2 ago I asked for protection of So Awkward but you declined saying you'd keep an eye on the user - Unfortunately a week or so later the user has returned to carry on where they left off, Just thought I should let you know :), Hope all is well :), Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 14:45, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Davey2010! It's good to talk to you again! I apologize for the delay responding to your message here. Life has kept me busy lately, and I'm just now getting caught up with all of my Wikipedia messages and emails. Oh.... joy...... I remember this issue and this user..... I'm so sorry that I wasn't here to take care of this for you and help. Fortunately, another admin did exactly what I would have done and imposed an extended block on the account for continuing to add unreferenced content. Sigh... I always hope that users will learn from these mistakes and the actions that followed and return from their block and move on from things... unfortunately, this isn't what happens for many and it doesn't appear that this is likely to happen with this user... though I do really hope it does and that I'm proven wrong. If you run into any more issues or trouble, or if you need my help with anything - you know where to find me ;-). I hope things are going well for you and that we speak again soon. Until then... ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:52, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Agreed It'd be nice if this editor did learn but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case, I feel like we should just put them out of their misery and indef them but I'm not as nearly as patient as everyone else here, Suppose it's lucky I'm not an admin :P,

Hi, I am sorry to bother you again. The sock of sock master[4] is back here [5] with the same style of abusive editing and removal of reliable citations as previously done by master sock. Please look into this as they are far more consistent than my expectations. Regards.-Kishfan (talk) 17:03, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Haha you are wasting your time you try and take ownership of all articles, it is biased nonconstructive editors like you that are not allowing useful contributions and progress on this site. All you ever do it revert other people's work whether a constructive or nonconstructive edit, I know you like to interfere in everything than complain and wine to the admin why you harass other users. Btw I am not a sock and I am not breaking any rules, I have retired my old account and now only use this account. I am only returning to Wikipedia after learning more and I am hopeful I can make positive contributions unlike you. I know you like personal attacks but I am not going to tolerate it from you. Hi Kishfan! No apologies are necessary; you're not bothering me at all by leaving a message here. My talk page is open and you're welcome here any time. I apologize for the delay responding to your message here - life's been keeping me busy lately :-). It looks like this user is blocked, so (hopefully) the matter is resolved. If you see any more sock puppet users pop up, report the matter by filing an SPI report and (if the user is being blatantly disruptive) at AIV or ANI. You're also welcome to message me on my user talk page to let me know and I'll of course be happy to help, but it'll most likely be handled quicker if you file a report at those noticeboards ;-). Admin

I don’t think I’m ready to be one and not at the range. I’m interested and I want someone like you who’s been a admin for years and give me advice of what to do when I decide to sign up. Thanks Oshwah. P.S. you’ve been a great help A.R.M. 01:39, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi ARMcgrath! I hope your day is going well! I apologize for the delay responding to your message - life has kept me busy lately and I'm just now catching up with all of my Wikipedia messages and emails :-). Sure, it's certainly not a bad thing at all to express interest in the role and ask about it and you're absolutely welcome to ask me questions. I'm not sure how much you know about the administrator toolset, the history of the admin user rights, how it's given to users on wikipedia, etc. so I'll summarize it all from the very top for you :-). The admin toolset allows editors to perform additional responsibilities and actions on Wikipedia (i.e. blocking and unblocking, page protection, deletion and undeletion, granting user rights, revision deletion, and other things) but it does not grant you additional "status" or "authority" over other editors in any way, nor does it exempt you in any way from being held accountable for violating policy. Simply put: administrators perform advanced functions and tasks for the community and that's it.
Editors are granted the user rights following a community review process and discussion and whether or not a consensus is reached by the community or participating editors to grant you the tools. The tools are granted to users who possess and demonstrate a very high level of experience, knowledge, tenure, commitment, community respect and trust, civility and cordiality, and other factors. As years have progressed and the project has grown and aged, the expectations of the community when evaluating potential admin candidates have also grown. If you look at the data on this page, it shows you very quickly that the number of total RFA requests over the years have gone down, and I believe that (if you disregard the RFA applications by brand new users who had their request closed as "not now") the percentage of successful requests to unsuccessful requests have also declined as well (I'll need to run those numbers to be sure though). The common reasons that RFA requests fail are outlined here and will give you a good idea of exactly what the community expects to see in candidates as well as what they expect not to see. I can tell you that I ran for adminship about two years ago, and many agreed that mine was a close one. If you want to see past RFAs, just look through the data on that page I linked you to for a list of each one. Or, shoot, you can look at mine... lol. I hope my response gave you some good information that you were looking for. If you have any questions about it, you're more than welcome to ask me and I'll be happy to answer them. Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:29, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Lithium carbide editing

Hi Oshwah

Just to greet you and to ask you, what do you mean by this reason for removing a part of entered information concerning lithium carbide as a chemical compound. Reason is: " not adhering to neutral point of view "

So ok, please if you can explain to me "neutral point of view" when somebody is just entering data that are facts, not someone opinion about the subject.

For example water boils at 100 C, that is a fact, but even that you can remove this, using a sentence " not adhering to neutral point of view " and as a argument you can explain to someone that 100 C is under 101325 Pa of pressure and at 0 m of altitude, that is measured at see level. And you would be "right" for someone who is not deeply interested in to the chemistry as a subject.

One more thing, generally speaking, when you are dealing with natural sciences like chemistry, biology...etc you can't just enter as justification "not adhering to neutral point of view" and erase entire section.

Not only that some data is very, not to say impossible to find, but it is written on another language, in this case some of entered data are from book published on russian language : " Косолапова Т.Я. Карбиды. ". Other data are fragmented between many scientific journals, like JACS and some publications that are not more published, like Gmelins handbuch der inorganische chemie so next time you decide to just erase someone text at least ask that person a thing or few about changes that is making.

You didn't have a time to look at other wikipedia pages on the same subject, written on another language, like on greek, russian, german ...etc, you should find that at least 80% of entered changes already exist on those pages. Other data are entered from the mentioned russian book.

Page protections

Hello,

On the recent events in terms of page protection, two pages have had their protection level changed from semi-indef to temporary full protection. Both these protections ended today but instead of reverting back to the original protection level, it becomes unprotected which makes me think that the previous protection level is overwritten by the new one and administrators have to re-protect it to semi-indef. I wonder if there is a way to do something which administrators can change semi-indef pages to temporary full protection but when that expires, it will revert to the previous protection level...

e.g. Cristiano Ronaldo - Semi indef → Temporary full protection (expires 4 August 2018) → semi-indef without the administrators re-doing the latter level.

Thanks, Iggy (Swan) 21:05, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Iggy the Swan! It's good to talk to you again! I hope things are going well for you and that you're having a good day. Unfortunately, when a protection level and duration is changed (for example: indefinite semi-protection to temporary full protection), the MediaWiki software treats it as a modification of the same protection, and not the application of a new protection level to take precedence over the old one. There's only one parent state in this regard: Either the article is protected, or it's not. If it's temporary and that time expires, the MediaWiki software removes the protection. Your question is something that I've thought to myself numerous times as something that would be nice to have, as I've been left with the unfortunate situation where I've had to modify a lower protection level set a longer duration and increase the level and with a very short duration many, many times... and knowing that I'm going to have to keep tabs on that article when that protection expires and remember to apply the old protection level back.
Fortunately though, this does not apply to situations where pending changes protection is applied and a different protection level is needed. Adding pending changes protection uses a completely separate trigger on the protection settings page, and they're seen by the MediaWiki software as two completely separate things (due to the fact that pending changes protection works by allowing users to edit without restriction but not publishing it to the public until reviewed vs placing active restrictions to who can and cannot edit the page at all). This is why you'll occasionally see articles that have both pending changes protection and another protection level applied.
In a nutshell: Is what you're asking about something that exists at this time? No. Would it be nice if it did? Yes. Hell yes it would... :-). Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Again, it's good to talk to you as always and I hope you have a great rest of your day. Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:11, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
In a nutshell, it would be nice. This would be nice if it can be done but it's not to be. A suggestion which won't happen. Iggy (Swan) 14:51, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Iggy the Swan - It definitely would be, but I wouldn't classify it as a "suggestion which won't happen". There's been quite a lot of effort made this year to try and revamp and pump up some admin special pages (like Special:Block, discussion is here) to make them more effective and improve how we can apply them. Adding a suggestion to the village pump and an enhancement phab ticket to the feature requests list is how we at least get the idea out there that this would be a nice thing to have. I'm willing to bet that there's a good amount of admins who would be happy to voice their support for the suggestion if you created a discussion... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:47, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Edit filter

I am guessing that there may be a private filter out there somewhere which prevents the same theme vandalism by User:My Royal Young from happening indefinately, e.g. 'Spearton' blanking. If that's the case, I'd prefer it to disallow the vandalism themes as 'ILOVECASH...' blanking/addition, this 'Want to join this guild' nonsense replacement and the weird large number addition/replacement (e.g. Special:Diff/818073895) that I have noticed more often than the occasional chat to you on the talk page. I do believe there is some filter out there. Iggy (Swan) 14:49, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Iggy the Swan - I did a little bit of digging, but I didn't find an edit filter like that upon taking a few sweeps over some users that were blocked... I'll keep checking and see what I can find.
That aside, if it's an edit filter created to catch an LTA's sock puppet accounts or IP hopping shenanigans, I would not recommend that you set it to disallow actions or otherwise intervene - especially if it's flagging a behavior that the LTA does each time consistently and over something that they possibly don't realize that they do. Otherwise, you're playing with your cards facing upwards for them to see... once the edit filter disallows them from doing what they normally do, they'll instantly know that you've caught what they're trying to do, it won't take very long for them at all to figure out exactly what it is that the filter is set to look for and flag, and it'll quickly teach them to change their M.O. to get around the filter. Now you're back to "square one" and in that phase where you're looking for anything that you think will identify them again... Why put yourself through that extra work?
Either way you look at it (whether you set it to do nothing vs set it to disallow), you're playing a cat-and-mouse game with the LTA and how quickly you can block the user once a puppet or IP is identified. If you have an edit filter that doesn't catch any false positives at all and flags an LTA's sock puppets due to something they do 100% consistently, the absolute best thing to do is have it quietly flag those edits so they can be quickly handled, and without revealing how they're getting snagged. They might change their M.O. if they figure things out, but you're at least not telling them that they need to do so and giving them a bunch of clues that are much better kept face down on the table ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:36, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
I'll keep that quiet and let them do that if possible without me discussing. Iggy (Swan) 16:04, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Iggy the Swan - You're fine... I was just telling you this so that you'll understand the reason if you were to request this officially with an edit filter built to catch an LTA and they decline it :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:43, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

The user on Antoni Porowski‎; did explain why in his/her edit summary: edited an error in his sexuality. It wasn't blanking and he/she explained it JC7V-constructive zone 18:23, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi JC7V7DC5768, and thanks for leaving me a message with your concerns regarding the revert and message I left for this user's edit to the article. I understand that the user left an edit summary stating that (s)he "edited an error in his sexuality", but what concerns me is that the user removed content that was referenced and then replaced it with content that wasn't. The edit summary may explain that the user removed what they believe to be an error, but doesn't explain why referenced content was replaced with content that wasn't. This is what's lacking in the person's edit summary and why I reverted the user's changes. I don't feel that this is a mistake. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to discuss it with you further. I appreciate your message and for expressing your concerns with me; please don't feel hesitant to express concerns if you ever feel this way :-). Flag of NATO

Discussion on the inclusion of two instances of an alternative flag of NATO (because it doesn't comply with both founding specifications and page 14 of the NATO Visual Identity Guidelines) has been broken between Garuda28's talk page and the Flag of NATO article talk page. My purpose is not to note that NATO has an alternative flag, but two instances of an alternative flag. They are on page 14 of the NATO Visual Identity Guidelines and page 8 of Secretary General’s Annual Report 2014. Page 14 of the Visual Identity Guidelines actually note it is the "NATO flag." With the proper citations, will there be conflict with any policy or proper conduct? 475847394d347339 (talk) 19:13, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Please, you misunderstand. The official flag is not incorrect. But it's more informative to note the two instances of an apparently unofficial one. Thanks for the notes, I will read them some time later. 475847394d347339 (talk) 19:27, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
475847394d347339 - I just realized this :-). See my response below - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:30, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Hi 475847394d347339! I actually just finished responding to this same question you asked on Garuda28's user talk page here. Okay, so it's not a dispute over whether or not the flag being displayed in the article is correct... it's a dispute over whether or not content should be added to the article to discuss a second alternative flag that is used. Okay... so, indeed, if the official documents specify that the flag exists and how and where it's used, then sure... you can certainly cite them as sources in the article to support the content. Just make sure that the content added reflects what is stated in the documents and doesn't add any additional analysis based off those sources (which would be disallowed per the big explanation message I left). If the documents don't state what you're adding as content in the article, you're going to need to locate and cite additional sources that support what you're adding, or it can't be added. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. To add comment to the discussion being broken up over two pages - I'd talk to Garuda28 and let him/her know that the discussion needs to be on the article's talk page, and then take it there from now on. Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:29, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
This has been the biggest dispute. I don't know how thankful I am. Thanks. 475847394d347339 (talk) 19:30, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
475847394d347339 - You're very welcome! Do remember that this is still under dispute and that you need to work with the other editors involved to resolve any concerns and come to a consensus. Don't add this content to the article until it does. It'll almost certainly result in an edit war between you and the others, and that's definitely not what you want to be doing. That'll only make everything much harder on yourself and everyone else involved, and it will make getting that content added much much more difficult and drawn out... so just don't do that ;-). Get that dispute resolved peacefully with everybody involved, and you'll be able to update that article soon enough (so long as consensus says that it should be added, which I would think it would assuming that your content is well sourced and not in violation of any rules). I'm here, available, and happy to help if you run into any more questions. Good luck! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:37, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Test wiki request

Hey Osh - since I see you've made recent edits on test wiki, could you by chance properly transclude this page to this page for me; the second page is protected and I'm unable to edit it. Thanks! Home Lander (talk) 19:33, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Home Lander - I'll make it even more easier and just grant you the tools. Done and done. No need to transclude your request now. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:39, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks very much. Home Lander (talk) 19:40, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Home Lander - No problem. Let me know if you need help with those edit filters and I'll be happy to do so. They can get quite tricky at times, so watch out! ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:42, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, I figure I might as well sit on the edge of the pool and just dip my feet in. Home Lander (talk) 19:44, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Revdel request

Hello. Could you please delete [[[REDACTED - Oshwah]|this revision]]? Thanks. Hrodvarsson (talk) 21:23, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Hrodvarsson -  Done. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:26, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Hrodvarsson - Also, send those kinds of requests to me via email instead so that they don't land here and generate the Streisand effect ;-). Thank you for reporting this to me. Definitely a serious violation that needed the revy devy :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:27, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Okay, I will do so in the future. Thank you for your swift action! Hrodvarsson (talk) 21:30, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Hrodvarsson - You bet! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:35, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
