Hi Matty. I'm involved in a bit of an edit war with User:Efc1878 over something simple as timestamps. What can be done about this user who appears not to be able to grasp the concept of correct timestamps? Do I keep reverting them or report them? Mórtas is Dóchas (talk) 20:20, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi, it's really not worth engaging in an edit war over this. I'd bring it up for discussion. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:26, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
Ok. Can you point me towards where I'd be able to discuss this? Thanks. Mórtas is Dóchas (talk) 20:30, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
You could try leaving a message on their talk page, or start a thread at WT:FOOTY? Mattythewhite (talk) 20:32, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
I've left a good few messages on their talk page already explaining about timestamps and he (guessing it's a male) has been adding the correct timestamps over the last few days. However, he has reverted me when I tried changing the international timestamps which were incorrect. I'll bring it up at WT:FOOTY I suppose. I still haven't joined the project yet, must do that now! Mórtas is Dóchas (talk) 20:38, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Matty. Basically whenever I amend stats in a page I add a new timestamp on the material day when the matches were taken place. I think my contributions to the Everton FC page and the players can show I contributed a great deal week in week out, hoping to give the best for the club and wiki. I urge you to give me the chance to manage the Everton FC page. Kindly consider it I am a dedicated Evertonian myself. Thank you for your consideration. Efc1878 (User talk:Efc1878) 21:48, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

I appreciate the work you put in to update stats, but we *all* need to do things by the book. Per Template:Infobox football biography#Parameters, we are instructed to insert "A timestamp (~~~~~) at which the player's infobox club statistics are correct". My reading of that is that the timestamp should reflect the time and date the update was made, which is not necessarily the same as the date the match was played. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:57, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Matty...In frank I do believe some people are winding others up. When I spent my time amending statistics and adding contents to the pages they did not do anything straightforward. So after I have done my hard work, some people just appear suddenly and change the timestamp, picking on minor details which something the mods may not do that often. I have to point out my stats and info contributing to the pages are indeed genuine. The season I put the timestamp is that way because there is nothing regarding stats can be updated since the last match day. Hope you understand my concern. Cheers.Efc1878 (User talk:Efc1878) 22:26, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

I wasn't winding you up. I was changing the nationalteam-update parameters to the correct timestamp. Timestamps reflect the time and date the update was made, not necessarily the date the match was played. What do you not understand about that? Mórtas is Dóchas (talk) 21:38, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Matty, may I suggest a consensus for this argument. The past amendments remain as my edition as I have spent a lot of time on them. From today, I will put the timestamp on the day I edit the page. Kindly consider. Cheers.Efc1878 (User talk:Efc1878) 22:54, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Mórtas is Dóchas started a discussion at WT:FOOTY#Timestamps, which you are welcome to contribute to. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:58, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

FA Youth Cup

Is the FA Youth Cup a major honour? Saw it listed for some players (Lingard etc) but not for others (Pogba etc). Was thinking of adding it to Pogba and others but thought I should ask first KnavishGlobe786 (talk) 17:00, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

I'd say it's notable enough for inclusion in an honours section, providing it's sourced of course. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:06, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

You're more than welcome to add them to the article. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:43, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

I have a couple of questions about your last edit on Dawson's article, you removed the citations from the top of the article in the few intro paragraphs, which I added their to show and clarify those points there, I know you moved around the citations, but I thought it was better the way I had before, so I was curious why you removed those citations from the first few paragraphs. It you look at David Beckhams article, which I wanted to get the standard towards because I consider that a good article it clearly has citations in the top paragraphs.

Also, some of the citations cover parts in the article which you went and added needs citation when you reworked it, in effect you changed it around removing the citation for some specific parts, for instance, in his Forest career, there was a clear citation for play-offs for season 2002-03, you change it around and added it needs citation when it didn't need that before. Then you went and removed why Dawson and his team mate were transferred from Forest to Spurs, to the Tottenham section loosing what I would call cohesion from the Forest section.

I don't want to be rude, but I felt you made the article a little poorer in quality to what it was. So maybe you could review your work and have another look at the article. Cheers, Govvy (talk) 09:01, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi. I removed the citations from the lead per WP:LEADCITE, namely "Because the lead will usually repeat information that is in the body, editors should balance the desire to avoid redundant citations in the lead with the desire to aid readers in locating sources for challengeable material". I don't feel the references I removed were citing potentially challengeable content.
I presume you are referring to the sentence "During the 2002–03 season, Dawson formed a solid partnership with veteran Des Walker as Forest finished sixth in the First Division to enter the play-offs"? Actually, most of the content in that sentence (barring entering the play-offs) is entirely uncited in the article. The reference used prior to my edits made *no* mention of Des Walker or finishing sixth.
Disagree, the primary purpose of my update was to copyedit poor prose, which I feel I succeeded at, while adding some citation needed tags where necessary. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 13:10, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
I didn't know about the WP:Leadcite thing, hmm, anyway I put a fair bit of work on the article awhile back to try and improve it, I don't know how it can be copyedit when it was mostly my own writing, but then again, I only got a D for my English GCSE!! Btw Happy Easter, Passover, ect. :) Govvy (talk) 13:32, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
You too! Mattythewhite (talk) 13:47, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

Please stop removing historical context from Benitez page.

Wondering why you insist on removing historical context from page on Rafael Benitez? My edits improved the page. You even removed corrections that fixed grammatical errors. I could understand if you removed certain changes but kept others but to simply continue reverting to a previous edit is unusual.

Re historical context: Many football manager's pages refer to the prior history of the club; see Brian Clough and Kenny Dalglish to name but two. Things happen within a historical environment - to remove that lessens one's understanding of a subject.

Please reread my edits. I've accepted some of the changes you suggested. Similarly, I could understand if you accepted some and rejected others but to simply reject all - particularly when they provide numerous links - does not make sense to me.

You're adding unsourced content, most of which falls foul of WP:NPOV. Statements like "another short, disastrous appointment" are not encyclopedic. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:55, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

I changed that. I accepted that the word "disastrous" could be seen as inflammatory. But that his reign was short is beyond doubt. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Omahonyjason (talkcontribs) 20:14, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

Apparent vandalism to EFL articles

Hello Matty, several pages (E.g. 2017–18 National League as well as L1 & L2) have come in for a great deal of IP attention in the last 2 days this editor seems to be the current main 'offender' but going back on the pages prior to their edits, there seem to be other IPs involved also. I think they need stopping. Thanks, Regards, Eagleash (talk) 18:42, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the clear revert edit summary. Since I systematically look at a lot of articles for citation cleanup work (how I also edited on Craig Eastmond), I also check other things like if relevant templates should be added (stub, reference issues, etc), and recently have also started looking if the talk page was ready and for stray comments left at the top of talk pages. I have read the talk page template documentation after your revert and you are right, so I have stopped adding those. —░]PaleoNeonate█ ⏎ ?ERROR 01:34, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Not sure if whether competition Teams of the Week are deemed notable, but I know I wouldn't personally include them. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:08, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

I'm all for their removal too, I would do it myself with the pertinent summary, it's just I am getting a little fed up of making perfectly valid edits that vastly improve the articles' state only to receive a note in the edit summary reading "possible BLP issue or vandalism". If I removed ref'd content (even if not necessary for that matter), I know that is what is bound to happen. Sometimes it's even worse, my edit in Jon Ander Serantes did not even merit a note of that kind in the edit summary and still I was reverted (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jon_Ander_Serantes&diff=777633730&oldid=777633593)!

Kyle Naughton: Career Stats

Hello, I am 86.152.141.212. I would like to query about this edit by me and the next one made by Govvy.

The one I made was fixing a few mathematical errors and removed one of the 'Total' rows as I believe that they are used for the same club for at least two seasons. Plus, I think it was right to replace the Middlesbrough stats for the domestic cups to "–" as the player wasn't at the club when they participated and they were knocked out before he joined them on loan.

18 minutes later, the user Govvy reverted my edit with the comment "Rv, your changes you made don't add up at all," and before I made my edit, I used a computer program called Excel to verify that there has been a few mis-calculations.

Having a look at other articles such as Paul McShane's and Dwight Gayle's, they show the proper way to display the stats which Kyle Naughton does not. Therefore I believe that what I did was correct and the recent revert was the wrong action to take.

Thank you, 86.152.141.212 (talk) 23:13, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

What are you talking about? You took out the middle subtotal row and because of that you messed up the data, when you removed that you didn't take into account recalculating the lower subtotal row before the final total row, which completely messed up the statistics totals in the final subtotal row. Govvy (talk) 23:28, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
I think you misunderstand, Govvy. The subtotals are for multiple season spells with one club, not as an aid in calculating the career total. The correct layout, as agreed by consensus, can be found at WP:FOOTY/Players#Career statistics. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:38, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
That adds up know, what that IP did didn't add up at all. Govvy (talk) 23:42, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
Matty, anyway, I split the table so Swansea has it's own subtotal as to separate that from the Tottenham loan spells, if you look back you will see that the totals added up combined Spurs loan spells with Swansea stats and I didn't think that was right, as you said above "subtotals are for multiple season spells with one club" that was my goal. Govvy (talk) 00:04, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
I have seen the WP:FOOTY/Players#Career statistics and it is clear to me that what I did would be correct which includes replacing the 0's with –'s on the domestic cups for Middlesbrough on this season 2009–10. I have also noticed that in earlier versions the first row titles Total shows the addition of the numbers from Tottenham stats only.

86.152.141.212 (talk) 10:14, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Matty, ffs look at the 3rd subtotal row, league games don't add up, nor goals nor anything else for the 3 loan spells from Tottenham, subtotal rows must be between clubs, there for you messed it up by not having a subtotal row after the three loan spells at Bro, Leics and Norwich. It's a much worse table now since you changed it, it's horrible. Swansea U23 is stupid having that on it's own row, you can combine that single stat into the main team with footnote like I had done. And each subtotal row must add up to the total row. It's a very very poor now. Either fix it or I will revert to the system I had before. Govvy (talk) 19:43, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Jeez, if you hate it that much then take it up at WT:FOOTY, and argue for the consensus to be changed. How I am supposed to "fix it" when it now meets the guideline to a tee I don't know! And using terms like "ffs", "horrible" and "stupid" really won't help your case. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:49, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
And by "3rd subtotal row" I presume you mean the Swansea subtotal? It does indeed add up. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:52, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
Not to the general reader it won't, if they look at the table it looks like it should be including the loans, but it's not doing that. Govvy (talk) 20:20, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
I'm not so sure, as the subtotal is located directly beside the Swansea section. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:09, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

"As of match played..."

Hi

I noticed on Luke Shaw's page you changed the "as of match played" dates to the last games played by Man Utd and England, as opposed to the last games played by Shaw. I'm pretty sure it was correct as it was so I changed it back but if I'm wrong just let me know.

--Stuart1234 (talk) 21:19, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi, until recently I was setting the dates to the last match played by the player, but have since learned that the preferred option is the last match by the team. That way, readers won't be left wondering if the player hasn't played or whether the stats just haven't been updated. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:39, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
Ugh, I preferred the way it was because now you'll have to update these dates for every single player in the squad even if they haven't played...but I'll go along with whatever is preferred so can you link me to where you learned this please? I think in this style it would be better to say "as of match played by Manchester United(/England) on..." to make it clear it refers to the last game by club or country.--Stuart1234 (talk) 08:34, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

Craig Shakespeare

I just want to make this clear about the stats on Craig Shakespeare- I edited it using the IP 86.184.39.187 thinking that a spell as caretaker and the current spell as first team manager would be separate spells in the stats table. Perhaps I should have thought twice by looking at another manager's stats who has been caretaker and first-team manager at the same club before editing it twice. I now understand about this and the reverted action you did yesterday and I won't do this to any other manager's stats.

Gary Cahill

Hello Mathew,

During your recent blocking of the user Uebelhoer, you undid the revision of Gary Cahill being captain of Chelsea Football Club. You did this due to no source, but as it says he is the vice captain of CFC, there is no source, so if you believe that there needs to be a source, please add one, since your are obviously a very, very, experienced editor.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:204:C401:7F70:4D15:945B:DAFC:5B4A (talk) 21:18, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Shinji Okazaki: Important to consider this

I have noticed that someone from the IP address 209.130.141.79 who made this edit but they have not updated it properly. This makes me confused as to if the international table is telling the truth or if there has been a miscalculation. Also I have noticed the info box is not up to date either possibly because the IP user has not updated that either.

That should be taken into consideration the next time something like this happens and it probably has happened in the past and it probably will happen again.

More miscellaneous

1 - Taking the example of the Pablo Calandria: again, how does one go about deleting (or proposing they are put up for deletion) the O'Higgins templates seen below in his article? At WP:FOOTY? Elsewhere? Man, that's a "sore for sight eyes" (intentional swap)!

2 - At least in Álvaro Morata, constantly: after months of operating anon (here, for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/46.20.221.14), User talk:YZPEDIA continues to remove runner-up honours in player's articles. I'm not going to go in whether they count or not (for me they do as medals are awarded, but I see that after 30,00000 WP:FOOTY discussions some people still argue they do not count, only wins), but to remove - time and time again - stuff that's sourced without one word of explanation is not very A.O.K, is it?

3 - This just in! Danish punk has returned removing B-clubs in box (as well as a FULL SEASON loan!!), have a look at Alan Osório da Costa Silva... Pityful!

  • Don't know if you missed the message or not. In case you did not, no block (and i know it's not possible to indef block IPs, but i have seen them blocked for up to three years)? This idiot is clearly not here to help out.

About item #1, don't worry, i'll take it (again) to WP:FOOTY. --Quite A Character (talk) 18:43, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

  • 2) I don't know for certain myself whether there is a definitive consensus re runners-up as honours. Regardless, I agree removing sourced content without an explanation is not right.
  • 3) IP warned. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:53, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

Regarding item #2 (still with Morata as example), they seem to have "given birth" to another account, User:Enejwnjwjwjwjwk, removing the honours and writing an "interesting" summary: "ADDED some information"... --Quite A Character (talk) 01:05, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Slaven Bilić

Why do you remove content from the page? If it is unsourced, add "citation needed" don't remove it, and if in given time people don't add sources then I will remove it myself. Is that ok? Don't just remove content arbitrarily please. Thanks --Tuvixer (talk) 13:36, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Because it is unsourced, which you already knew. Why do I have to add CN tags? People shouldn't go around adding unsourced prose and stats tables willy-nilly, this is an encyclopedia which has standards to maintain. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:39, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Jordan Pickford article

Hi Mattythewhite. Yesterday I added references to previously unreferenced information in the article and made various updates, including removing a lot of duplicate links. Various edits were made after that by others, but I feel confident my last edit brought the article to an improved standard. Would you mind if we revert the article back to my last edit? Many thanks, --LegereScire (talk) 07:48, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Can you explain why David Beckham can have his OBE after his name in his infobox, but Steven Davis can't? 89.225.209.84 (talk) 20:07, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

AFAIK it's standard practice to only place honours after the subject's name in prose, and not in an infobox. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:22, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

Raul Meireles

I'm french so sorry if you may don't understand ! My informations are true. At his debut at Desportivo Aves, he played 16 games and not 18 Meireles on national-football-teams.com. Meireles never score a goal in the UCL 2007-08 : see here Meireles on soccerway.com. The National Cup games for Porto are good but the man who did the stats is not a calculating machine. Count on yourself and you will see the mistake : Meireles played 15 times in National Cup for 3 goals but it is written that he played 20 games... Concerning Chelsea, he did not play his 6 matchs during the 2011-12 on the League Cup but FA Cup competition : Meireles on espnfc.com. So, do you believe me now ?? --Joan Benvegnu (talk) 18:01, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Your figures don't add up, though. For example, Aves in 2001–02: how can Meireles have made 18 league appearances, but only 16 in all competitions? Mattythewhite (talk) 11:29, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

(writing here because I have to weigh in on the matter)Anon, they reverted you again Matty. Well, I re-reverted :) Now, for something completely different; 1 - inquiring about my "rollback possibilities", I wrote where you directed me to (here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_permissions/Rollback), was the only user in the ENTIRE page to not receive one single word of feedback, "interesting"; 2 - since I had the last account and until I created this new one, has the "e-mail this user" feature disappeared? I can't find it in users' pages anymore.

Michael Coulson

Could you please provide a link to the discussion(s) which show that the Scottish Sun is not considered to be a reliable source for football transfers? Not that I think its content isn't usually alot of crap, but your claim that St Johnstone's own website is more factual is completely false, considering that both Danny Swanson and Tam Scobbie are still listed, two players who have already left to join their new clubs. Exxy (talk) 14:50, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

I'm not aware of any such discussion, but it's standard practice for the Sun to be used only sparingly for non-controversial content. Coulson signed for St Johnstone on a two-year contract, so unless his contract has been terminated since the end of last season he remains their player. I can't find any source, on St Johnstone's website or elsewhere, that confirms this. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:57, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
Fair enough. In the meantime, I'll make sure to keep my eyes open for any announcement of his departure from McDiarmid Park. Exxy (talk) 20:27, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Chelsea F.C.

You removed my table displaying the periods at which certain sponsors were on the team shirt due to not sourcing the content. You could use the same source, providing it supports the content you're adding. But I don't think we don't need the sponsors in both prose and table format, wouldn't one or the other suffice? Mattythewhite (talk) 11:24, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi. I need your help as an admin. User:Kov 93 moved Ferencvárosi TC to Ferencvárosi TC (football) and then he made a copy-and-paste creation of Ferencvárosi TC (sports club), which has since been expanded. And should the articles really have been moved in the first place? Qed237 (talk) 18:48, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

Everton squad template...

Hi Matty, what do you mean by "new number doesn't apply until 2017/18"... The new season starts from 1 July, doesn't it?, also his squad number is confirmed by Everton here JMHamo (talk) 18:36, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Indeed, but all the other remaining squad numbers apply to the 2016/17 season. I'd personally update it once all the 2017/18 numbers are out. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:44, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
It says very specifically "Rooney will wear the number 10 shirt for our 2017/18 campaign" on their official Twitter feed, can't get more reliable than that. JMHamo (talk) 18:50, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
Not disputing the sourcing aspect of it, just I'd wait until all the 17/18 numbers are assigned, rather than updating them piecemeal. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:53, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Josh Onomah

Hi Matty. That contradicts the body of the article, which states that he first appeared on the bench on 5 January 2015. If you can identify a game during 2013/14 where he was on the bench, then fair enough (although it would still be entirely pointless to state that he played 0 games during that season given that that is the assumption for any season which is not mentioned), but otherwise I'm inclined to think that you're simply misinterpreting his presence on the Soccerbase page for that season. Clicriffhard (talk) 19:58, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Players only appear on the Squad stats pages on Soccerbase if they appeared in a matchday squad. By my reckoning, the first match he was involved in was was Dnipro v Tottenham on 20 February 2014. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:03, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
Yes, I just found that one myself, so the body of the article needs updating accordingly. I still think it's a little pointless to include a season in which he didn't play, but I won't object if you want to reinstate the "stats". Clicriffhard (talk) 20:05, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

No offence taken. The format at WP:FOOTY/Players was decided by consensus at WT:FOOTY a while back. With regards to duplicating divisions in the career stats tables, accessibility was taken into account, although I can't recall the specific policy or guideline. Mattythewhite (talk) 11:01, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Referencing

Hi, why have you reversed two of my edits due to lack of references when in the first case (David O'Leary), the information about his honours was already written in the text above; and in the second case (Roy Hodgson), the reference about his honours was provided in another Wikipedia page (Premier League Manager of the Month), the link to which was provided in the edit? If you can't use information which is already on wikipedia as a reliable reference, then surely the whole of wikipedia becomes invalid. Potential (or REAL!) nuisance

Have a look at this guy/gal (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Pui_de_dinamovist), seems they will revert any negative reference to a club or player connected to Romanian football, even if it is sourced: example 1 - in Juan Ángel Albín, they removed the FC Petrolul Ploiești club went bankrupt (here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Juan_%C3%81ngel_Alb%C3%ADn&diff=790290657&oldid=790284439); 2 - in Daniel López (footballer, born 1992), they did not seem to like the player was associated to modest clubs, so they removed a large portion of storyline, including TWO REFS and any mention to the division a given club competed (here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Daniel_L%C3%B3pez_(footballer,_born_1992)&diff=next&oldid=789971012)!! 3 - in Diogo Salomão, they took offence to the true fact the player was demoted to the B-team when he returned to Sporting Clube de Portugal, so they removed it (if you have a quick glance at either SOCCERWAY's or FORADEJOGO's timeline, you will see that's exactly what happened)! In fact, in 2015 he returned from another loan and continued appearing solely for Sporting B; added refs to the piece, by the way :)
