Non-League Directory 2008

Hi was wondering if you could help, having trouble finding out statistics for the 2006-07 FA Cup and FA Trophy fixtures and I'm pretty sure that you have this book so just wondering if this information is included in the book? Thanks Nfc123 (talk) 17:39, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

@Nfc123: They include player statistics for Conference Nat/North/South clubs if that's what you're looking for? Mattythewhite (talk) 19:58, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Yes, trying to update the Dagenham & Redbridge players for the 2006-07 season, but having particular trouble finding out lineups for the FA Cup and FA Trophy games and then would like to reconcile the league appearances against Soccerbase. Thanks for your help. Nfc123 (talk) 22:40, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

I know it's a bit cheeky but is there any way that you would be able to send a picture of the Dagenham statistics for that season? Not sure if it's possible to send by email? Nfc123 (talk) 19:20, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

@Nfc123: Do you have emails enabled? If not, go to Preferences and tick 'Allow other users to email me'. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:51, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay, just updated my email address now, thanks in advance. Nfc123 (talk) 11:34, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

@Nfc123: Email sent. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:59, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi replied to the email but not sure if it went through as your original email doesn't display properly now. Nfc123 (talk) 20:32, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

@Nfc123: You have mail. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:25, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Thanks really appreciate it. Nfc123 (talk) 22:08, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

Youri Tielemans

I now see why the infobox for that player does not display a full name there, judging by the initial 'A.' used in the article. I was wondering where that disappeared until I saw the page history. I now also think the A stands for something but hasn't been given yet. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 17:13, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Disruptive Behavior

Hi Mattythewhite.

Regarding this Bernardo Silva's page, the user slbEdit is starting a WP:WAR. His WP:Disruptive editing has violated the three-revert rule. Regarding S.L. Benfica related pages (former players, managers, seasons, whatever), this user harasses and has a WP:BULLY attitude. Another admin, GiantSnowman adverted him in the past as you can see here (here, here and here)

He's adding non-encyclopedical info as you can see by this edit. Stating that Silva is a Benfica supporter is irrelevant. I assume, given his nickname, that this user is probably a SL Benfica supporter. Thus he is constantly adding biased info.

The user MYS77 had already adverted him when he was adding the Pistolas nickname to Jonas' page. Can you delete that info on Silva's page and advert the user? P3DRO (talk) 17:23, 13 May 2021 (UTC)

@P3DRO: Could you indicate where they violated 3RR? As regards the content they added Bernardo Silva, the football team an individual supports is often included in their biography. If you feel it isn't notable I would advise you seek consensus at WT:FOOTY. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:32, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
I think it's non-encyclopedical info. It's irrelevant what club Silva supports. The user is just a SL Benfica fanboy/girl and wants to add that to prove a point. Besides that, he does not assume WP:GOODFAITH and does not talk WP:TALK before reverting content. It's not the first time. As for the 3RR, I deleted that info here, he then reverted, I deleted again while also updating some caps here and the he reverted for the third time here. P3DRO (talk) 17:41, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
Per WP:3RR, "An editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page—whether involving the same or different material—within a 24-hour period." I can only see two reverts there, and they weren't within a 24-hour period. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:08, 13 May 2021 (UTC)

P3DRO has reverted my constructive edits in Bernardo Silva saying it is vandalism. While he was here complaining, I added another reliable source and rearranged personal life section. I'm going to revert his edits per "idiocy" because that's what it is. SLBedit (talk) 21:32, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Now there is a discussion at Talk:Bernardo Silva#Personal life. SLBedit (talk) 22:19, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

This is disruptive behavior. SLBedit (talk) 22:22, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Thierry Henry

Hi I explained my reasoning for this change in a previous post. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Junefith (talkcontribs) 22:09, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello Matty,

not going to discuss most of the technicalities here, but when (if) is the protection template (don't know if that's the correct name here) going to be lifted in this article? Has been like that for more than five years, needlessly in my opinion.

Happy editing --85.243.89.253 (talk) 18:07, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

I agree it's probably not needed anymore, removed. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:34, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Technical question

Taking this as an example: if the name of the WP page is (for instance) Pando, Uruguay, displaying it as such instead of "Pando, Uruguay" is not considered overlinking is it? In cases like this, the link is that of a CITY/VILLAGE that happens to have the country attached to it, at least that's how i see it.

Attentively --193.137.135.2 (talk) 09:36, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

It's may not be overlinking, as we're not linking to the country's page, but it's an appropriate use of piping. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:17, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

Honours

Domestic titles are listed at the top according to what? There were no official consensus on this, while Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players#Honours still suggests that continental titles are listed first, followed by domestic league, national cup, league cup, and supercup(s). Snowflake91 (talk) 17:41, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

@Snowflake91: I hadn't realised the MoS was laid out that way! I've rarely ever seen honours ordered that way in practice so I'm curious as to how the MoS came to be that way. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:43, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello Mattthewhite. I saw that you reverted my insertion of this template at the norwegian this season topscorer of the champions league, Erling Haaland. and you added a question in your edit summary. why don't you redirect that question to the templates talk page og its wikiproject instead of just commenting it ? Best regards Migrant (talk) 00:09, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

AC Milan

Regarding Thiago Silva and other player articles. I was trying to follow the somewhat tentative consensus to make it AC Milan per the comments from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Archive 120#A.C. Milan or Milan?. I did change on a number of players to AC Milan, I see a lot of player info boxes as just Milan which does bug me out. Govvy (talk) 19:26, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

@Govvy: Thanks, although I'd say there wasn't much of a consensus for anything one way or another from that discussion. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:00, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

Sergio Agüero

Hey Matty,

You reverted my Sergio Aguero edit for lack of sources. He already has a section about his move to Barcelona with a confirmed and reliable source, that has been accepted. Therefore I didnt find it necessary to put a source on me editing his current club, when the section about his move to Barcelona is already present, sourced and accepted.

He doesn't join Barcelona until 1 July, which is already stated in the Barcelona section. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:32, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
In that case its understandable why you would revert my "current club" edit. Thanks for the clarification. But why revert my edit on his Senior career then?
He isn't a Barcelona player until 1 July so we shouldn't be including them in the infobox until then. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:42, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

UEFA Champions League reference

Please respect other editor's work. When Chelsea won the Europa League back in 2019, we use BBC Sport as the reference and you didn't have problem with it but what's the problem now? I'm using BBC sport as the reference but you keep reverting. Don't be arrogant just because you're the admin here. I will admit my mistake if I do something wrong but this time, I'm running out of patience because I didn't do any mistake here. I'll keep using BBC sport as the reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BPL2007 (talkcontribs) 18:17, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

@BPL2007: You're not the only one running out of patience. 8th place for an award? Being in a video game team of the year? Come on. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:55, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

Doubt

I think the pertinent discussion was held some time ago (at WP:FOOTY, most likely), but i can't remember when, so i ask your reliable opinion as an admin (i also don't known if you engaged in the talks back in the day):

this guy most certainly does not pass WP:NOTABILITY (only lower league and amateur football thus far, at age 34). I also fail to see how on earth he meets the GNG criteria (i suppose he has an acceptable number of news articles in the Galician media, but that's it), could you (re)enlighten me please?

Thanks in advance (this just in, found this diff https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Joselu_(footballer,_born_1987)&diff=615885638&oldid=615883900, you did weigh in on the topic; do you remember the outcome?)! --193.137.135.2 (talk) 10:54, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

Jorginho

Do not remove sourced content on the honours section of the player.--Oluclen (talk) 09:52, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

The content being sourced is immaterial when the honours aren't notable: finishing in what is effectively last place in a tournament isn't grounds for inclusion as an honour. You're welcome to raise this at WT:FOOTY if you believe this is wrong, but edit warring isn't the way to go. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:30, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Happy Adminship Anniversary!

@CAPTAIN RAJU: Thanks! Mattythewhite (talk) 20:40, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Reversion of edits with no clear reasoning

Your reversions of my removal of content may be reasonably adjudged to lack coherence:

Your persistent inclusion of club youth honors on Mason Mount's page lacks consistency, for there is a lack of inclusion of youth club honours on several other pages, and does not align with the template on WP: Football.
You removed Gabriel Martinelli's FA Cup win (he played 3 games in the competiton). In comparison, Christian Fuchs played a single game (15 minutes, to be precise[1]), yet is listed as a winner.
My edits on Sergio Agüero's page refers to consideration to lucidity in relation to temporal distinctions; stating "in the summer of 2021, he signed for Barcelona after his contract with Manchester City expired" can be reasonably deemed inessential, for my sentence ("in 2021, he joined Barcelona on a free transfer") retains the crux of the information, but disseminates it in a pithier format.

Please explain the reason for your edits vis a vis generic talk page statements threatening a ban(s). MrloniBoo (talk) 23:20, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

Re Mount: The Player MoS doesn't make reference to youth club honours either way. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:41, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
As that is the case, the only logical and consistent conclusion would be to not include them; the page makes explicit references to youth international honours, which are widely included. It can be expected the same to occur with that which is not included. MrloniBoo (talk) 18:30, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
Re Martinelli: I did indeed, because the reference you cited didn't even make mention Martinelli's name. I've removed the honour from Fuchs' page, as I don't think a club source is adequately independent enough to reference a club honour. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:41, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
While Martinelli did not play in the final or is cited in that source, three games played is considerable enough to give way to the FA Cup as an honour. But for the sake of referencing, he can be seen to collect a medal here.[2] Additionally, there is a logical inconsistency in your statement that a club source is not "adequately independent enough" to reference a club honour; it is reasonably certain Leicester (and to a wider extent, every other club) will not fabricate what their players have won. MrloniBoo (talk) 18:30, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
Re Agüero: If you could dumb that down a bit, I'd appreciate it. Too many clever words for me. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:41, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
The argument regarding Agüero's page mentions the differences in our statements; while there are similarities with "in the summer of 2021, he signed for Barcelona after his contract with Manchester City expired" and "in 2021, he joined Barcelona on a free transfer", the second is objectively more succint, while retaining everything the first had to say. In turn, it provides better clarity. MrloniBoo (talk) 18:30, 6 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I'm not sure why my edit was removed. The image was sourced from Wikimedia Commons and yet you've accused me of uploading it, which I did not. I simply found it and linked to it. I see it has now been removed, but I don't wish to be unfairly tarred with this brush when I sourced the image fair and square, and it seemed it had been uploaded and checked and was OK to use. It's not my fault a copyrighted image was allowed on the Commons, is it? ScouseSocialist (talk) 20:16, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

@ScouseSocialist: The image was removed because it is a copyright violation. I didn't accuse you of uploading it: I left the message on your talk page as you added it to the Grealish article. My advice would be to be judicious with images on Commons, as people often upload images that are not released under a free licence, and therefore can not be included on Wikipedia pages. Honours

Is this an acceptable edit (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=F%C3%A1bio_Vieira_(footballer,_born_2000)&diff=1027688511&oldid=1027686018)? Runner-up honours at a Under-21 Euro (where physical medals are awarded), especially in cases such as this where the subject almost does not have any accolades to "cause clutter"; user in question has quite the history of doing this...

Attentively --193.137.135.2 (talk) 13:05, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

I would say that's notable. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:28, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for input. Speaking of (potentially) wrong edits performed without one word in summary, what's your intake on this (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fernando_Llorente&diff=1027706463&oldid=1027674594)? No further edit wars from me, i guarantee you, it stays how the other party wants! --85.243.89.253 (talk) 19:16, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Restored, as it's in the honours section. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:51, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Doubt

Don't know if it's a guideline that we must adhere to or not or only an aesthetical preference, but why do some users insert international goals as a sub-sub-section instead of a sub-section (i.e. William Carvalho)? It looks darn ugly in my humble opinion, all lop-sided (but if it's a guideline for reasons that elude me for the moment, of course i'll abide by).

Attentively --85.243.89.253 (talk) 23:21, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

I agree, although really it shouldn't have a heading at all, per WP:FOOTY/Players#Career statistics. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:32, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

unprompted message

Yeah, hi, who are you and why are you sending me a message accusing me of making an unsourced edit on a page that (to the best of my knowledge) I have never seen in my life? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.115.127.110 (talk) 12:54, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

@87.115.127.110: Hi, the message I left was made in response to this edit which came from your IP address around a year ago. IPs don't always remain static so someone else was probably assigned your IP at that time. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:28, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Blackpool F.C.

Would you mind intervening over there when you get a moment? An editor keeps adding a "1 July" subsection to the squad section for some reason. I've reverted twice. - Seasider53 (talk) 21:10, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Reverted as it's unsourced. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:24, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

The reason it was added was because they were players who had signed for the club but are not able to join until 1st July, same as the ones who will be leaving the club on the same day.

As for citing sources, no other club squad lists have any sources showing. Smithy53 (talk) 01:30, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Well, plenty of club articles do list sources for squad lists so that's not correct, and even if it were, it wouldn't make it right. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:33, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Would you like me to delete the list of players from each clubs Wiki page where they are not linked to a source? Or do you want me to provide a list of Wiki pages so that you can delete them? If you're going to do it for one then you should do it for them all, you've got to show that you are being consistent. Smithy53 (talk) 16:01, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

I'd rather see them sourced, although I don't see why that's my responsibility just because I reverted an unsourced change on one page. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:16, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

But surely you've got to delete the other pages that don't have sources just to show a bit of consistency, or do you just do it to keep another whinging editor happy? Smithy53 (talk) 17:39, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

No, I don't think that necessarily follows. Reverting an unsourced change at one club article doesn't oblige me to trawl through the pages for the rest of the 92 to inspect their squad sections. And, to be fair, the other editor wouldn't be whinging (to use your term) had you provided a source for your change in the first place. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:45, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Untitled

Hi Matty,

I fixed some spelling and grammatical errors on the Ruben Dias page and even tweaked his height, which was provided by Transfermarkt. You reverted the changes under the premise that Transfermarkt is an unreliable source, and that's why I'm wondering why it is considered one. The website over there is accurate, checked by analysts, and even used by big managers and clubs worldwide.

Thanks

P.S. I can see that the Dias page has been fixed to the benefit of correct wording by someone else. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brodude90210 (talkcontribs) 23:47, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

@Brodude90210: Because it uses content that is user generated. Per WP:UGC, "Content from websites whose content is largely user-generated is generally unacceptable". Mattythewhite (talk) 23:50, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

International Goals

hi Mattythewhite, I have updated Raheem Sterling's goal tally (for England national team). Just wanted to ask, if the goal tally is every goal he scores for his national team (World Cup, euros and friendlies)? Thanks. StarWarsLiverpoolWikipedian (talk) 14:19, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

@StarWarsLiverpoolWikipedian: That's right, although we shouldn't update the figures until after the match is finished (see WP:LIVESCORES). Mattythewhite (talk) 14:21, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. 👍. StarWarsLiverpoolWikipedian (talk) 14:23, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Matty, I noticed you removed my changes to Justin Hoyte's page on here, however, he's been working alongside myself and a few other up and coming commentators. Live updates - Reply

Matty, no defence whatsoever from me, i fully acknowledge those are 100% wrong edits. But i sincerely thought a player being replaced meant it was OK to update the stats/goals. Is it not?

Attentively, sorry for the inconvenience(s) --85.243.89.253 (talk) 20:35, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

@85.243.89.253: No, as the match is still in progress, even if the player is no longer involved. The match could still possibly be abandoned, and we should wait until the source(s) used in the article to be updated, which usually isn't after the match is over. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:39, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

Quincy Promes

Can you please stop adding the 2021 Eredivisie title to Quincy Promes list of titles won. There were 37 medals and he was not one of the recipients. He allegedly stabbed his cousin in the knee and was sold to Spartak in February. He did not win the championship with Ajax in May. I have started a discussion on Quincy Promes talk page where I welcome you to provide your proof that Promes was awarded a medal because I know for a fact he was not. The burden is now on you to prove that he won a championship in May with Ajax. Good luck. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.249.116.15 (talk) 08:13, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

@77.249.116.15: I had assumed good faith that the reference supported the content, but after checking it confirms that Ajax won the title but it doesn't mention Promes. I've removed it pending a better source being found. Mattythewhite (talk) 08:44, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

Hey man, I saw you undid the addition of an end date to Mame Biram Diouf's international career. I had spotted that change when it was made and thought about undoing it myself, but didn't we come to the conclusion that if a player's last international appearance was over a year ago, we should put the date of their last appearance in the infobox, even if they haven't officially retired from international football? – PeeJay 12:32, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

@PeeJay: I think there's a convention along those lines, although I hope it's more than just one year. That seems an awfully short period of time in which to essentially write off a player's international career. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:06, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
Ahh, maybe it was two years. I figured one year because that's the amount of time we keep players in the "Recent call-ups" section of the national team articles, but two would at least be a bit more leeway. – PeeJay 22:16, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

Kevin de Bruyne

Try edit Kevin individual honours properly, you haven't put all what he achieved why? Plz try to list all his honour if not he will be underrated. Lassbadjie (talk) 00:40, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

@Lassbadjie: What haven't I put that he achieved? Mattythewhite (talk) 00:42, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

You did not put his ballon d'or rankings, his EA sport awards, his uefa 2nd place awards 2020, World soccer player of the year 2nd place, Goal 50.2nd place and evin he won three times Epl top assist provider but you put only two.i can't mention all but is many just try and find out put put all his individual awards and rankings please. Is this a correct edit (does not seem so)? If he is known by his surname ("Moreira"), why must the Thai sort key (he played one year in that country) be "Bruno Moreira" instead of "Moreira, Bruno"?

Attentively --193.137.135.2 (talk) 11:27, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

@193.137.135.2: It seems to be convention for names to be ordered that way with categories relating to Thailand, per this. The same applies to Icelandic individuals, see Gylfi Sigurðsson as an example. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:27, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

His Honours for both the FA Cup 2015/2016 and EFL Cup 2016/2017 are listed on his profile on soccerway (https://int.soccerway.com/players/luke-shaw/209805/), is that enough source along with the club's statement? Kindly let me know. Thanks Ampimd (talk) 23:58, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

@Ampimd: Soccerway are notorious for listing honours for players who were only so much as on their clubs' books, so they're best avoided when it comes to honours. Best approach is to see if there's anything that explicitly states the player won the competition, such as confirmation that they received a medal. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:24, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Two articles on same player

We have Nélson Gama, then Toni (footballer, born 1972). My suggestion is to delete the latter, then rename the former with the latter's title, as the former contains a filled infobox and a ref covering most of the subject's career.

If my explanation is a bit confusing (but here it is step-by-step: 1 - delete "Toni"; 2 - after that, rename "Gama" as "Toni (footballer, born 1972)"), please let me know what your doubts are. Attentively --193.137.135.2 (talk) 13:07, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Edits regarding to Goran Pandev

I hope I could clarify:

  1. When you say it is unsourced. First I would like to say that I could find the source that his contract expires on June 30, 2021. If no source of him renewing the contract, then he would automatically be a free agent. So if you say you need source, you should ask the source of him renewing the contract. Otherwise the reverting is unsourced instead.
  2. When you say that the page need to be updated, I would totally agree. However the pages wouldn't be closer to the truth if even one minor correct change wouldn't be allowed.

WP:Karlsruher

Hello!

For your information, the Karlsruher problem does not apply to all German club names. Wolfsburg (the name of a city) and Hertha (the name of a goddess) are not adjectives, but nouns (names), and, as you will also see in their articles, someone could use Wolfsburg instead of VfL Wolfsburg and Hertha instead of Hertha BSC.

By the way, in case it's not clear, I am referring to this.

Are you a human or a bot? If you are an example of the former kind, then I would kindly ask you to not follow rules, regulations, guidelines and instructions blindly, but use the gray matter that differentiates droids from humans.

Kind regards!

Nialarfatem (talk) 19:00, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@Nialarfatem: I think you know very well that I'm a human and not a "bot". If your intention is to engage positively with other editors, I recommend you refrain from making thinly-veiled personal attacks when you disagree with an edit. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 19:04, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Howdy?

The issue is that I really don't, as your response could pass with ease Turing's test: all I know is it could be a prompt message. As per my message, there is nothing veiled in it, no offense meant, no personal attack meant (in fact, if my purpose was to attack someone personally, I wouldn't ever do it to be veiled), maybe it's due to cultural difference because that question is not offensive where I come from, and it's something ITs often ask, all I am asking here (and kindly) is the use of common sense, because not all cases are the same, and there is no pattern that covers everything. Anyway, you didn't say anything for the edit, so I take it you agree with me.

By the way, you could pretend to be quick-tempered, as that would help your case, it would definitely be an indicator of a human being.

With good intentions, the ones you engage positively with other editors.

Have a nice evening!

Nialarfatem (talk) 20:08, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@Nialarfatem: I would highlight this passage at WP:KARLSRUHER: "If you do insist on using one-word names, or town names, please check that it's appropriate, and that no other club uses that name. For example, there is another Hertha". Writing Hertha BSC rather than just Bertha, at least on the first instance, will be beneficial to our readers as it eliminates ambiguity. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:27, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Hello!

Yes, there are actually more than one clubs with the same name, but only them are the only one to be referred to as Hertha, all the rest clubs that have Hertha in their name are referred along with something extra to Hertha (initials and/or city's name, et c.) so to make known people are talking for another Hertha. Besides, as the oldest team, they are the only rightful owners of the name (they could even legally forbid the usage of the name from other clubs): the owners of a club's name are either the first that officially had the name or, if that club has been dissolved, the one that is the oldest active club, unless there are issues related to honors (where the rights for the club's name stay only to the dissolved club). That is why, even though I totally understand your thinking, I must admit "BSC" in the name manages to do the opposite of what you are trying to do, as it did with me: when I first saw it, I had to change it because, seeing the initials, I thought it was about another Hertha and not the famous one. In the case of Hertha, if not for "Hertha", I would recommend the usage of Hertha Berlin, which is how they are widely known in everywhere but German-speaking regions, even though the two out of the three other clubs with Hertha in their name are also from Berlin, but for now there are no issues if only Hertha is used: and I am saying "for now" because this could change in the future, if one of the other Herthas achieves the same caliber with Hertha Berlin, like the example of Manchester (before 21st century everyone meant Man U with just saying "Manchester", now, after the rise of Man City, people ask "Which one?" if you say "Manchester"), and it will be like this for long, because the German system does not allow the kinds of funding leagues in other countries do, and clubs there need many years to climb in leagues and fame. So, if it was up to me, I would instruct people to use the name only for the rightful owner and initials, et c. for the rest of clubs with that name, as otherwise initials, et c. could confuse instead of helping (this includes names of cities, as apparently, for instance, there are many clubs in Wolfsburg and Marseille, but there is only one club known as Marseille and one club known as Wolfsburg). By the way, using your rationale, then people should write Ajax Amsterdam instead of Ajax, as there are many other clubs with the same name (both as Ajax and/or Ajax FC), example: Ajax Futebol Clube, but I haven't seen it in one infobox or the body of one article, everywhere it's Ajax and people know the club it refers to. After all, don't you guys have something that the one with the most notability gets the name in case of disambiguation?

P.S. Seeing this got long, my apologies!

Cheers!

Possible illegal user page

Hello!

Sorry to bring this here, but I don't want to report something before making sure I am doing it for a valid reason, and, seeing you are an admin, you may know: is this user page legitimate? It has an infobox of a "footballer", with information that can't be verified...

Cheers!

Nialarfatem (talk) 15:58, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

@Nialarfatem: As long as the user isn't trying to make it appear as though their user page relates to an actual player, e.g. by including their name in mainspace pages and linking to their user page, I don't think it's an issue. I've added {{user page}} to the user page to help make it clear that the page doesn't relate to a real player. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 16:20, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Pau López – MOS

To me it was never an issue, even though it should be fair to say i've never edited good/featured articles in my 15 years here, so maybe i could be missing out on something. That an occasional season (i.e. 2016/17) is not displayed "in full view" in the wording, the pertinent wikilink being hidden, i never thought that would pose a problem to WP readers, especially those familiar with a/the sport (an example: in a sentence starting "On 23 July 2018, X was loaned to Y club in a season-long move", isn't it easily perceivable that we are referring to 2018/19?).

That being said, sorry for any possible inconvenience (again). Attentively, continue the good work --193.137.135.2 (talk) 13:33, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

It's better to be specific than to leave our readers unsure about what we're referring to, and mentioning it shouldn't be at all detracting. While most people reading the article will be familiar with football, not all will. With the example you cite, what needs to be remembered is that some leagues are played over calendar years (there's more than you might think), so we shouldn't leave our readers to ponder whether we're referring to a "2018 season" or a "2018/19 season". 3. Create a page for Friendly (Association football) — Preceding unsigned comment added by GenuineEdits (talkcontribs) 11:29, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

Sorry about that. I restored the article to your liking. I was reverting somebody else's edit at the time, and when I clicked save, somebody already did that for me. Japhet Tanganga

Hi Matty, I note you’ve reverted my edit re Japhet Tanganga and Greater London. Hackney is infact inner London and not Greater London. Commonly, the City of Westminster, City of London and inner London (London postcodal areas) are referred to as London and those outside of that but within the London boundaries outer London or Greater London. Not sure why Hackney is referred to as Greater London as no one refers to Notting Hill or Shepherds Bush as Greater London, so why Hackney.

Regards,

Mabbs001 Mabbs001 (talk) 10:43, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

@Mabbs001: According to our article on Inner London, "Inner London is the name for the group of London boroughs which form the interior part of Greater London" (my bold), meaning Hackney falls within the boundaries of Greater London. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:28, 2 September 2021 (UTC)
You wouldn't say Inner London, you would say Hackney is in east London. Govvy (talk) 18:07, 2 September 2021 (UTC)
Depends how specific we're being. We usually include ceremonial counties, which in this case is Greater London. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:25, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Tried to embrace the guidelines (no nationalities in lede for players who were born in one country and represent another one, even if they are not naturalised), received this warming message in reply (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:193.137.135.2). I know my summary was not all it could have been again, but the other party started it first (not an excuse for me, no siree), accusing people of vandalism left and right for trying to "do as WP does"! If Google T does not cut it for you i can translate, but it's really nasty!

Hi, this map shows the path of Conte from the deepest south of Italy, one of the poorest regions of Italy, northwards into richdom and success. In the fullscreen display of the map that is visible and usable on every device even mobile devices you can walk through the streets into every stadium mentioned. It was just a suggestion. Ruedi33a (talk) 07:21, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

@Ruedi33a: Right, but *why* though? Is this something that our readers have been crying out for and are going to find particularly beneficial? But if you feel there's a case to be made for the inclusion of maps like these, feel free to bring it up at WT:WPF to get a discussion going and to seek consensus. International goles tables

No problem, but look here: List of international goals scored by Cristiano Ronaldo. No one will correct it, because he is afraid of the editing war. Wolfgang (talk) 16:56, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

It's just for the stats, not the prose, you don't need to remove the prose like you did on Bamford. Govvy (talk) 17:14, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

@Govvy: For consistency and in case the match were to not be completed for whatever reason, I think it stands to reason that we don't update the prose until the match is completed. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:33, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
Except Bamford was called up to England squad 26 August, which means he is part of the England team as of then, yet you still removed the national team bit from lead and the zero stats bit from infobox. That really did baffle me! Govvy (talk) 17:42, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
@Govvy: We only include national teams in the infobox and the opening sentence of the lead once the player's been capped. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:44, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
Really? I thought it was suppose to be when called up, I've always added when called up and I've never had another problems with that in the past. Btw, good second half in the England match. Govvy (talk) 17:47, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
@Govvy: It's definitely the case with the infobox, as the starting and ending years relate to players' first and last appearances rather than call-ups. Yeah, much better once your boy Kane came on for Bamford. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:56, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Another one!

After the situation at Raphaël Guerreiro, now another one in Bruno Gaspar (this time no insults, lucky me). Can you please add your two cents here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Walter_G%C3%B6rlitz#Bruno_Gaspar)? Perhaps an account will the get the respect i don't!

Anon thinks changing allegiance is what changes nationality. The way Wikipedia works is on caps for the new nation. Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:33, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
We typically omit the nationality in the opening sentence where there is ambiguity and explain further on in the lead. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:33, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
@Walter Görlitz: "Thanks" for avoiding any interaction whatsoever with me even tough i was polite (if i had been aggressive i would totally understand, no place for that here). Third or fourth time i send you a message in all these years (IP or with account), third or fourth time you remove it from your talk page without one inch of reply (this time, you also proceeded to call my actions "unacceptable" in @Robby.is.on:'s talk. I would ask you politely how exactly, but i "think" yould would not be bothered to reply at all because i edit as an IP, really "classy"). As you can see, Matty explained what i tried to convey with the sentence he wrote here that reads "We typically omit the nationality in the opening sentence where there is ambiguity and explain further on in the lead", but i see you have left Mr. Gaspar's intro in the exact same way.
Sorry to bother you ALL (Matty, Robby, Walter), article stays how Mr. Görlitz wants. Now, a grammatical question to Matty (since it's his talkpage and all!). Of course i will leave Bruno Gaspar's article in peace (at least, the intro, i also "thank" Mr. Görlitz for not reverting all the additions i have made to article since its inception, 99% of its improvements are due to me!), but i ask you this: shouldn't it be "...is an Angolan professional footballer..." instead of "...is a professional Angolan footballer..." (WITHOUT linking the country and creating a sea of blue, but i suppose Mr. Görlitz supposes i'm making that up too)? --2001:8A0:7667:5801:F1B5:9CEA:491A:6619 (talk) 18:09, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
No idea what you're on about WRT interaction, but the last time this came up at FOOTY we declared the team they're capped for, but if tendentious editors insist on not displaying a nationality, we usually indicate national team only in the lede. I'm sorry that I confused by the caps issue. Walter Görlitz (talk) 20:42, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Thanks and stats tables

Hi Matty. Thanks for the cleanup at Josh Sargent and Milot Rashica. I've fixed two issues you introduced in the international goals stats table. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 09:10, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

@Robby.is.on: Those are sentence fragments so they shouldn't end with full stops, see MOS:CAPFRAG. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:29, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply, Matty. I know of MOS:CAPFRAG but I disagree. The example of a sentence fragment mentioned there notably lacks a verb whereas "Scores and results list United States' goal tally first, score column indicates score after each Sargent goal." is a full sentence. Robby.is.on (talk) 17:31, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
But it's not constructed grammatically in a way that it would function as a standalone sentence. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:46, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

Also on the topic of stats tables, what's up with the removal of "sortable" from the international goals table at Eduardo Camavinga? The template at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players has it. I don't really care whether we keep it or not but removing it without consensus seems the wrong way to go. Robby.is.on (talk) 22:34, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

@Robby.is.on: There's no need for a table with only one entry to be sortable. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:46, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
Okay, that makes sense. Robby.is.on (talk) 22:47, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

Reverted 1 edit by RMCD bot (talk): nonsense request

Seems like this bot has gone back into it's unusual tagging activity once again, dating past to the 10th September I noticed. I was wondering per recent changes to my watchlist pages as to why you've reverted a bot but later I realised someone has posted multi-move nonsense page moves onto random talk pages. It's not often users revert bots but on the rare occasions that seemed necessary from what you did today. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 21:30, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Stefan Kuntz

Hello Mattythewhite, I put the link of the official website of the Turkish Football Federation in the summary of the change. Maybe you didn't notice. Please check again. Youth international appearances

Hi Matty, looking at your changes at Yann M'Vila, I'm asking myself: do we no longer include youth international appearances below U21? If it's a question of sourcing, Worldfootball.net has them: https://www.worldfootball.net/player_summary/yann-mvila/4/ Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 11:44, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

@Robby.is.on: We certainly do still include them, but the issue is that M'Vila's profile on French Football Federation website no longer includes his stats at youth level below under-21, meaning they weren't readily accessible elsewhere in the article. Worldfootball.net might be a decent alternative in principle, but their records look largely incomplete. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:03, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
Mm, that's a pity. Robby.is.on (talk) 22:24, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Bukayo Saka 12th cap for England

Hi can you add Saka's 12th cap for England he gained it this evening against Andorra is that ok please ?. 178.167.144.136 (talk) 18:56, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

@178.167.144.136: The stats shouldn't be updated until after the match has finished. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:20, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Does it really matter ffs 178.167.144.136 (talk) 20:30, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
@178.167.144.136: Yes, that's when sources are updated and updating the stats prematurely often leads to conflicting updates from other editors who haven't realised they've already been updated. But the match is now finished so I've updated the page. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:43, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello. Re your addition of Jake Cooper as the player's full name, citing the EFL 21/22 squad lists. Jake Cooper might be his full name these days, but that source doesn't verify it as such; for example, if you look at the first page of the Rotherham squad on there, you'll see a player registered as plain Will Grigg, and not the William Donald Grigg that previous squad lists and multiple other RS give as his full name. Jake Cooper's the name now being used by his clubs, and in match reports and other media, so it's clearly his common name, but...

He was registered as forenames Jake surname Southern Cooper on the EFL 2018 retained list, Soccerway has forenames Jake surname Southern-Cooper with a hyphen, and ENFA lists forenames Jake Southern surname Cooper. No version yet mentioned is the one his birth was registered under. All of which is why I deliberately left the fullname field blank, because we have no definitive source for what it actually is. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:06, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

@Struway2: I added the full name after checking the BMD records and seeing that his birth was registered with the name Jake Cooper, although on further inspection he was also registered as Jake Southern. So I wouldn't be opposed if you wanted to leave it blank. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:25, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
That's weird, actually. When I looked up the birth records I didn't find him as a Cooper, although he's clearly there, I only saw the Southern one... Either way, we still have no definitive secondary source, so I would be more comfortable with it being blank. Thanks, Struway2 (talk) 08:12, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, just some quick pointers,

please do not think i edited under three IPs to avoid scrutiny or something like that. This one here is my workplace IP, but in my home everytime i turn the computer on i am assigned a new one for reasons that escape me.

Since there is no way we will see eye to eye in the wording MOS (i don't understand the point in overusing words like "club"/"season", or why we must overuse the exact season, but hey you're the admin), i promise to leave this article in peace. Sorry for the inconvenience.

JimmyCrow

Hey, I've been having a run-in with a user, "Cracker-Kun," who is very aggressive on their talk page and reminds me a lot of another user, "JimmyCrow." When I looked at their edit histories side-by-side, I realized that they are nearly identical in scope and subject, and the two users' personalities are also nearly identical. I think we might have a sockpuppeting scheme going on. This is only a suspicion, but the two usernames also have latent racist elements, at least in American English. Just a thought I felt might be necessary to send your way. Anwegmann (talk) 17:03, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

@Anwegmann: Have you considered requesting a sockpuppet investigation citing behavioural evidence? Robby.is.on (talk) 10:51, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
I have. I don't want to make accusations where they don't belong, so I wanted to see if someone else came to the same conclusion as I have before making anything official. I will do that, though, if you think it's the best course of action. I appreciate your suggestion. Anwegmann (talk) 15:23, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
Ah, okay. I know of both editors but I am not familiar with their editing patterns. I might have a look later, will wait for Matty's reply first. Robby.is.on (talk) 16:03, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
