Eni Aluko editing

Hi Matty,

This is Eni Aluko. My assistant was tasked with making edits to ny wikipedia account given there are disputed facts, lies and negative bias throughout my Wikipedia account. You are clearly responsible for many of those edits and will be reported if it persists.

Thanks

Eniola Apokaradokia (talk) 01:26, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

I'm not entirely convinced if you are really the famous person or someone completely different. I've noticed Pontus Jansson before I registered with my username in 2017 but I don't think that was him either. We'll see what the owner of the talk page (i.e. Mattythewhite) says here. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 09:49, 26 May 2020 (UTC) (talk page watcher)
Hi, could you point out where and how I am responsible for any negative content at Eniola Aluko? The only edits I've made the article recently were some sourced additions about Aluko's early life and reverting the unsourced content you added to the page. If you are indeed the subject of the article as you claim, I would recommend you take a look at WP:COI, a guideline regarding potential conflicts of interest. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 09:56, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Rio Ferdinand

Hi Matt

Can you please explain why you have reverted my change on this players honours when I have now sourced the BBC article showing his participation in that years trophy. This was already shown on this page by the appearance list. I know you don't particularly appreciate transfermarkt but this also shows Rio Ferdinand as a winner of the 2009–10 Football League Cup.

Because a) you only cited your source in the edit summary and not in the article and b) appearing in an earlier round of the competition isn't sufficient. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:55, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Matt

Okay A) i wrote it it the wrong place; apologies. Even if I had written it in the right place place would you disregard it due to your Point B)?

Point B) Here is Rios's good friend Jermaine Defoe being giving a winners medal when he didn't play the final for Spurs was in fact then a Portsmouth player but having played in earlier rounds was awarded a medal. Rio played in a game as well as being in other matchday squads for that years cup.

What are you citing as not sufficient? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Apmccarthy01 (talkcontribs) 19:22, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

If you can provide a reliable source that makes it explicit that Ferdinand received a winner's medal for the competition that season then go for it. Otherwise, I don't see much grounds for inclusion. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:09, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

IP address 2402:B801:2846:3100:4CB3:7968:AB38:A773

This IP address has also editing the league table templates without providing a valid source. Therefore, I am not certain if that's right or not. Have a look at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football for the ongoing discussion. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 09:49, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

I've replied there. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:10, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Your edit on Petr Čech

Can i enquire you for the reason of why you removed the whole "Records" section in the aforementioned article? I saw no problem with it whatsoever. So am i missing here something? P.S. If you have 100% faith in your edit and think that it is appropriate then please spread uniformity by checking out Iker Casillas. This article too, has a records section which you might as well remove. Regards Pesticide1110 (talk) 06:52, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Also i did revert a part of your edit in which you removed the "Czech first league most clean sheets" honor info by branding it as "non-notable". Generally a league or federation sanctioned honour is never non-notable and even if there are some exceptions, Czech First League is definitely not amongst them. Plus, the honor section of an article on wikipedia is defined such that every league sanctioned awards are included and thus i think that you might re-confirm your decision to remove it. Pesticide1110 (talk) 06:57, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
If "Czech First League Most clean Sheets" is the name of an award (along the lines of the Premier League Golden Glove) then I would agree that it should be included. From what I can see it appears to be just a statement that he had the most clean sheets of any goalkeeper in the Czech First League that season, which is a performance-related achievement rather than a formal honour. Hence why I removed the records; they're achievements rather than honours. Re Iker Casillas, I don't think the records section there is appropriate either, although I don't have the time or inclination to work on every football biography honours section. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:02, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Mason Greenwood Edit

Do you want to only include his league goals. I think if you want to do that, indicate for the reader else Greenwood has 14 goals in total. LuomyEQua (talk) 20:53, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Yes, that's the way it's always been done, and this is already indicated at the bottom of the infobox. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:57, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

It's not "blind reverting" when what I did cleared up a mess. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:47, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
Except it was - yes my edit had some rogue formatting, but at least the link worked. You simply restored a broken website! GiantSnowman 18:49, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
Rogue formatting, as you put it, isn't an improvement on a dead link. But it's all sorted now anyway. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:13, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

abandoning Wikipedia

Hi,

I've been editing Wikipedia as long as you have, if not longer, however, I'm done. If there's some trivial violation of some new styling rule, fix it, don't just revert it. I have had nothing but bad experiences interacting with other editors on here.

Mk270 (talk) 05:32, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Would have thought you'd have been aware of WP:BURDEN after all that time, but okay. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:14, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Michael Timlin

Hi Matt I made edits to Michael Timlin's page after speaking to him and also looking up the information and then providing references for them in the page so I'm not sure why you've removed them. They are all correct because Michael himself asked me to make them changes. I'm no expert on here so maybe I've not done the references properly, nevertheless they were done and so there's no reason why they shouldn't be allowed. Thanks Matt MSMundy (talk) 17:17, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Any chance of a reply Matt? MSMundy (talk) 08:41, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I reverted your edits because they contained unsourced content. And before editing on behalf of another individual I would recommend you look at WP:COI. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:09, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
So you changed edits that are factually correct. Right ok. MSMundy (talk) 21:30, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Carles Puyol

You just reverted my changes about Carles Puyol, and give as reason "Spanish customs"

  • First of all, the player is Catalan and its name follows Catalan customs and not Spanish.(note the catalan naming customs are also covered in the wikipedia article Spanish naming customs, so no change in that regard is required).
  • Second, even the Spanish Wikipedia names him using the proper name (following Catalan customs).
  • Third, the link that were in the website were broken and I simply replaced them.
  • Fourth, I added a link from the official website of the Spanish La Liga.

SFBB (talk) 01:00, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Please see WP:BRD. You've been reverted by multiple editors now, you should now seek consensus for your change (I would recommend at WT:FOOTY) instead of edit warring. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:04, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
The first editor reverted because I used Transfermarkt (as one of two references I provided) but I deleted that link (and I kept the official website of Spanish LaLiga). And then I informed him that I corrected it.SFBB (talk) 01:13, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, if I'm mistaken, but I don't see a conflict requiring discussion and consensus. I simply see, that, when trying to correct broken links, I made a mistake using an incorrect source (which I did not know it wasn't accepted) and then I deleted that link as requested.SFBB (talk) 01:13, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
You changed the naming custom on an article that has been used, without dispute, for years. I see no reason to include the i when we rarely, if ever, use the y, which is allowed in Spanish naming customs.
I think there was a problem and that someone had made a change of the customs before me, because if you look at the pronunciation it says Catalan pronunciation: [ˈkaɾləs puˈjɔl i sɐfuɾˈkaðɐ], which includes both the mention to the Catalan and the i. As I said, I was merely trying to correct broken links and the links I found include the i and not a y. I'm not trying to start warring.SFBB (talk) 01:36, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Happy First Edit Day!

Thanks, you are too kind! Mattythewhite (talk) 23:44, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Matty, just wondered if any of your Rothmans books had any coverage of the amazeballs 4-4/7-6 1998 Football League First Division play-off Final? I'm struggling to find reliable sources for when (and why) the bookings were handed out for example... Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 10:05, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

I'll have a look tonight, although I imagine their coverage even for an amazeballs match will probably be pretty rudimentary. Mattythewhite (talk) 10:15, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
@The Rambling Man: I've checked the Rothmans 1998/99 yearbook (page 34), and all they include are the attendance, goalscorers with times and starting line-ups with used subs. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:46, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
Okeydokes, thanks anyway. Did you look at the article lately? The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 07:49, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

medals

you know players dont have to play in the final or be in the 18 to get a medal, right? you qualify just for playing 1 match in the tourneyMuur (talk) 22:04, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

you can even see here that you even get a medal if youre sold halfway through the season and the team go on to win the trophyMuur (talk) 22:19, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
Also here's a source saying city bought more medals from the EFL for players that didnt play in the final here. "City have ensured that a number of players that were not in the matchday squad at Wembley will receive a medal. They include first team members such as Leroy Sane and Scott Carson that were not in the first team squad, Angelino and Ian Carlo Poveda who have since moved out on loan to RB Leipzig and Leeds respectively, and any academy player that was involved in any round of the competition.". this is for 2020 sure, but this shows that you only need 1 appearanceMuur (talk) 22:33, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
If you can provide reliable sources to support each honour, that's fine. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:50, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
I mean, soccerway list the 2018/19 EFL Cup in john stones' trophy list and you guys have it listed as a reliable website for footballMuur (talk) 23:18, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
Soccerway list all competitions won by a club in a given season, whether that player *actually* won it with them. We're going to need something that specifically states that Stones won a medal for the 2018/19 EFL Cup. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:59, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
well its still that one appearance in the cup gives you a medal. he made four that season. what about these? eurosport, premierleaguenewsnow.Muur (talk) 01:22, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
Can you provide evidence to support your claim that "one appearance in the cup gives you a medal"? Mattythewhite (talk) 01:57, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
What i find is that the winners and runner up get 23 medals, 18 for the players in the team sheet, one for the manager, one for the assistant, one for the physio, and then two for other staff. but then that they can request more medals. the Manchester evening news link I posted further up shows that in 2020 man city ordered more league cup medals for the players who weren't in the team sheet for the 2020 league cup final. "City have ensured that a number of players that were not in the matchday squad at Wembley will receive a medal. They include first team members such as Leroy Sane and Scott Carson that were not in the first team squad, Angelino and Ian Carlo Poveda who have since moved out on loan to RB Leipzig and Leeds respectively, and any academy player that was involved in any round of the competition." so all those players were given a league cup 2020 winners medal.Muur (talk) 02:29, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

James Ward-Prowse

Yep, it's fairly common and certainly merits a mention in the lede - see e.g. GA Sean Morrison (footballer). If you wish to re-word please feel free. GiantSnowman 15:36, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

I agree that it's probably notable for inclusion somewhere in the lead, but it's hardly a defining characteristic of the subject or an assertion of their notability, so it doesn't really belong in the opening sentence. As you introduced the grammatical error I would have thought you'd be happy to correct it yourself? Mattythewhite (talk) 15:41, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

Election table titles

I noticed you undid my edits that removed the commas in the titles of the 1974 elections? Also, I think you might be wrong about the formatting the titles should follow as per this in the style guide. But I can see that it is different in the template for the Election box.

I asked on the talk page and got an answer that suggested that General election <year> was correct. Thoughts?

Gharbhain (talk) 19:25, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

My intention was to undo your change to the formatting of the wikitext so I apologise if I inadvertently restored unnecessary commas. And I would say that the style guide is superseded by WP:NCELECT, as it is a guideline. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:35, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
No worries, I am just trying to make them consistent. Are you sure WP:NCELECT applies to table titles? It seems to refer to article titles? I'm not really fussed either way, I just want to make sure it is the correct way to format it before I change everything back. Gharbhain (talk) 19:41, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
I think it specifically refers to article titles, although I don't see why we we would or should employ a different format for tables. I think the use of "[type election] [year]" on constituency articles is a relic from when election articles used to be titled that way, before consensus was reached a few years ago to move them to "[year] [type election]". Mattythewhite (talk) 20:09, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
No worries, just couldn't see any consensus after searching and there was conflicting information in the template and style guide. Will update to <year> General... Gharbhain (talk) 21:50, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

Navboxes

Heya, what's your intention behind reverting my removal of the Navboxes for Awards on certain footballers' pages? It seems pointless to ask a reader to click twice in order to view a template, especially when the there are only 2 templates contained within the Navbox. What is your reasoning please? Officially Mr X (talk) 18:03, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

I could ask you why you would remove them? Their use for coupling two or more similar templates is quite commonplace. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:44, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Ezgjan Alioski

Hey mate, why did you revert my edit?Atlonche (talk) 00:52, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

Because we don't put undue emphasis on ethnicity in the lead. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:57, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

How is mentioning his ethnicity putting undue emphasis on ethnicity in the lead? Its not a secret he is Albanian, so mentioning it shouldnt cause problems. Atlonche (talk) 01:01, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

We don't deal with ethnicity when it comes to the opening sentence of the lead, just nationality. Ask literally anyone else if you don't believe me. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:03, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

What about Enis Bardhi? He's quite famous here, although ethnicity is mentioned in a more subtle way. I dont mean to be annoying, mateAtlonche (talk) 01:08, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

If i may ask are there any guidelines i can look at to be sure? Not that i doubt you but i dont want to make any stupid mistakeAtlonche (talk) 01:10, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

Per MOS:CONTEXTBIO, "Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability. Similarly, previous nationalities or the place of birth should not be mentioned in the lead unless they are relevant to the subject's notability." And don't worry about being annoying or making mistakes, we're all constantly learning new things here. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:18, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

Thank you mate, it does make sense when you think about it. I hope I can be better at editing as time goes on. And if people are as nice as you were, I know it'll all work out. Cheers friend! Atlonche (talk) 23:22, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

Message regarding a recent edit

Hi Mattythewhite,

I have received a message from you regarding a recent edit about a footballer(?) - Bobby someone or other - whom I've never heard of. I haven't made any such edit and am wondering whether my profile has been hacked. This is not the first message I have had along these lines. A few months ago I received a message threatening to block me because of vandalism which had nothing to do with me. I'm sorry you have been inconvenienced but I assure you I was not involved

Duncan Harrington

I haven't left any messages on your talk page, and certainly not one about a footballer called Bobby. Mattythewhite (talk) 11:22, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi,

Then maybe you have been hacked. The message I received purported to come from your username.

Duncan Harrington

There's no mention of my username on your talk page, so I don't know where you're getting this from. Mattythewhite (talk) 11:42, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Timo Werner

Hey there, I saw you edit my talk page the other day. On Timo Werner I edited the box on the right hand side of the screen that shows what club he is at. (The box saying "Senior Club"). As Werner recently moved to Chelsea I updated his club. Here is my source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53092225 https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/timo-werner/profil/spieler/170527 . Both seem to be reliable sources so take your pick. However, I do not know how to add a reference to the box as typically there is no reference sign for other examples. If you could update it for me, it would be great and then just reply to tell me how you did it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Haris920 (talkcontribs) 23:17, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Per the BBC article you link above, Werner "will join in July after the German league season ends". He is not a Chelsea player *yet*. BTW, Transfermarkt is user generated and is therefore not a reliable source. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:21, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing that out. I must have missed that part when I read the original article. Haris920 (talk) 14:14, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Pasalic

Hello, Atalanta recently signed Pasalic permanently so he's no longer on loan from Chelsea

You need to provide a reliable source to support this claim. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:12, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
In this case, there is a source but the transfer isn't official until 1 July. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:14, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Dennis Bergkamp did not act as a center forward. He played further back, returning to set up the game, like a second striker. Just see the placement in the lineup representation. Lorde McCoy (talk) 01:56, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

Yep, I've added that to your report at WP:AIV, although I'm reluctant to block with WP:INVOLVED in mind. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:36, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
Now blocked. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:41, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
Blocked. These were socks of long term troll User:Evlekis. Sro23 (talk) 19:43, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
Is that based on a CU check? The edit pattern of these accounts don't seem particularly in line with that of Evlekis. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:51, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
No, just the way these socks behave. Per WP:BEANS I probably shouldn't say more. Sro23 (talk) 20:17, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
I think you may have mistaken these socks with User:KMagz06, who you blocked around the same time, and whose behaviour does seem to match that of Evlekis. The behaviour of the Leeds socks, however, don't seem to. Even though, I agree with the eventual outcome of an indef block for each. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:29, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

Have I done something to offend you?

Hi Matty

I was rather surprised by the non-standard reason you gave for removing the sentence that I added regarding Brendan Rodgers' transfers at Liverpool. I recognise that Wikipedia does not "need" any more football-related information, but that does not seem to be a reason for removing it.

Was the problem that you are not interested in a manager's transfers? Or that I omitted some of the 33? I notice that in the section I edited, there are references to a well-chosen selection of games but not all of them.

This is not the first time that you have removed an edit of mine even though the edit was correct. Have I done something to offend you? I may as well stop editing if you are targetting me.

Pete Ridges (talk) 15:06, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Firstly, just because someone reverted one or two of your edits doesn't mean you are being "targeted" or that you have "offended them". Let's deal with a content dispute rationally.
I explained in my edit summary why I reverted you, which was based on an arbitrary list of transfers being included. I did not state anything along the lines that "Wikipedia does not "need" any more football-related information". Mattythewhite (talk) 15:31, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi there, just checking on a revert you done on his page. Does league cup / EFL counts in appearance for fulham? if yes, espn stats show he made 3 appearances in EFL and 1 appearance in league cup here. --Justanothersgwikieditor (talk) 01:38, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi, the infobox accounts for "appearances that the player has been awarded in league competition only". What ESPN rather unhelpfully refer to as "EFL" is actually the EFL Trophy, a cup compietion, and not EFL the league as one might assume. I would recommend checking Soccerway, who are more clear with the presentation of their figures, and they show that Davis has not made any league appearances for Fulham. Mattythewhite (talk) 09:36, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
Never notice the fine print after years of reading! Thanks for the clarification~! --Justanothersgwikieditor (talk) 01:56, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi, Its reg. the recent change you did on top of my change. Harry arter has completed 23 league matches for Fulham FC including the match against QPR on 30th of June [as confirmed by match listing on Soccerbase]. It might take a few mins to update their heading section. I am adding the change back, if no cnocerns. Thank you. Gosdi (talk) 20:25, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

I didn't knew we have to provide source for that, but still I think you should not have reverted my edit as source wasn't required(according to my point of view). Please guide me about this type of edits.A player of Burnley Football club (talk) 04:33, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard

I noticed you were very quick to discredit my edit on Paul Scholes. Rather than help find references you just deleted my edit (which you could have easily done as your references for Steven Gerrard also apply to Scholes). I have now provided citations which some of which are the same websites you used for your citations on Steven Gerrard so if you delete my edit now it is blatant bias. Looking at your edits on Steven Gerrard you have stated that he is considered to be one of the greatest midfielders 'of all time'. The website you used to provide evidence also states that Paul Scholes is also considered one of the greatest of all time. May I state on Paul Scholes' article that he is considered one of the best of all time? If your answer is no, then you should remove that part from Steven Gerrard's article. Goofdawg (talk) 10:15, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

See WP:BURDEN. It isn't my responsibility, nor anyone else's, to "help find references" for content added by another editor. And could you please support your assertion that I have edited Gerrard's page to state that "he is considered to be one of the greatest midfielders 'of all time'"? Mattythewhite (talk) 10:20, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

Edit: Having read your response I have realised that I was wrong (I assumed you wrote the article). I apologise for this. However, I still think whoever wrote the part of Steven Gerrard's article where it states he is one of the greatest midfielders 'of all time' needs reviewing as the evidence provided isn't sufficient enough to be making such a bold claim. Thank you Goofdawg (talk) 11:47, 1 July 2020 (UTC) On the other hand, there are better ways to go about citation issues than to simply delete my edit:See WP:PRESERVE Goofdawg (talk) 11:51, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello there,

so, we have another name/nickname compound, as Diogo Jota and many many others, would very much like to know the reasoning behind this. Fair enough, won't touch article again in that department and go against what it seems to be a consensus (my first summary could also have been less aggressive, and for that i apologise), if indeed there is/was one; i'm pretty confident these naming conventions stem from the idiotic approach 99,99999999999999% of the Portuguese broadcasters engage in, leaving us with stuff like "Pedro Mantorras", "Pedro Pauleta", "Nuno Capucho", etc, etc and thus "misleading the rest of the world" (so to speak).

Attentively, continue the good work --Quite A Character (talk) 18:00, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

What do you mean by "name/nickname compound"? Mattythewhite (talk) 18:04, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

"Márcio" = part of first/real name; "Mossoró" = nickname. See more examples written above, just added by me to original message. --Quite A Character (talk) 18:36, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Right, but I don't see that as an issue when that combination is what the individual is most commonly known as. A Google News search reveals 3,160 results for "Márcio Mossoró" istanbul, compared to 397 for "Mossoró" istanbul -Marcio. Also, three of the four external links refer to him as Márcio Mossoró, with the only one that doesn't, the Turkish Football Federation, using his full name instead. 2002 First Division Play-off Final

Hi Matty, working on this budgie article. Would you be kind enough to tell me who was highest two scorers (broken down league/cup etc) for each team (Nodge/Birmingham) from your Rothmans archive and provide accompanying reference data? Much obliged. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 20:37, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Patrick Bamford

Hello Matty,

Wondering why you struck my para on Bamford there on 30th June:

<<In Leeds' first home game on 27 June, following the break necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic, Bamford scored the 10th-minute opener in the team's 3-0 defeat of then-4th-placed Fulham, maintaining Leeds' position at the top of the Championship.>>

The reasons I added it were two-fold: (1) the 3 solitary league goals that Bamford had scored from Christmas to the temporary end of the season in March brought his goalscoring into focus, including a lot of criticism of the striker for his profligacy in front of goal - this text sought to address that; (2) the recommencement of the league post-Covid is a unique marker in its own right, almost like the beginning of a new season. Intrigued to hear your rationale for deletion. Thanks. Franburke2 (talk) 16:21, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Because it was unsourced. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:53, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Restored the para & added ref. Thanks @Mattythewhite: Franburke2 (talk) 17:31, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Mattythewhite, I am a bit confused as to why you called me out for disruptive editing on the Willian page when all I did was change punctuation and link it to other Wikipedia pages, as it was another user who did not cite or spell the football clubs properly. I was not aware as to why it was disruptive. Could you please explain to me so that I can better improve my additions? Stop posting unwarranted threatening warnings

Dude, stop going on my talk page and posting warnings, accusing people of disruptive edits and threatening them with editing bans. https://imgur.com/60htib0.png

That edit was made SEVEN MONTHS AGO, why the hell are you posting on my page in July threatening me. Seriously dude.

I am NOT a disruptive editor, and I don't need you throwing your weight around, threatening people. Especially from something that was addressed more than 6 months ago, edit history shows it was in **December 2019** and you threatened me with bans then!!!! Dimspace (talk) 01:40, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Ok now i understand what you are on about. You are talking about the adding of a sourced premier league title to Andy's page. I added this because I noticed in the edit history there had been a rollback that only stated "unsourced" as the edit summary. So I grabbed some sources and in **good faith** made the edit. I Would suggest going forward that you pay more attention to your editing. Simply stating "unsourced" gives the impression that all that is needed is a source to be entered. What you actually meant was there was a question over the eligibility of the player to receive the honour.
Perhaps going forward rather than spending time dishing out warnings to people who have made good faith edits based on your edit summary you could instead focus on improving your own edit summaries ;) Even then, jumping on peoples talk pages and threatening them with being disruptive and threatening with bans rather than entering into conversation just makes you come across as a bit of a.. you know.. cheers Dimspace (talk) 02:05, 6 July 2020 (UTC) 02:01, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
I would suggest going forward that you ensure that the sources you cite *actually* support the content you add, rather than just blindly copying the sources I had been using on other pages. That way, the encyclopedia is being built verifiable content, and you don't need to worry about "threatening warnings" ;)
And BTW, in the warning you are referring to (the one you rather curiously screenshotted), I gave a specific reason as to why I reverted: "Content not supported by source". And further still, it wasn't even me who reverted you so I don't know what edit summary you're even referring to! Mattythewhite (talk) 10:11, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Stephen Kenny

Did I do this one right?, you had previously made the same revert. Is WP:OR the right reason? He basically looked up Stephen and Kenny in a dictionary and added them in. It probably would be Stíofán Ó Cionnaith, but I can't find a source for it. TIA Arnkellow (talk) 21:04, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Joe Willock

Re: Joe's height, through pictures he is obviously the same height as Aubameyang [6'2] (you can search images of Willock on google images to verify this). For verification's sake EA FIFA 20's database[1] (which uses official measurements) lists him as 1.86m at the start of the season (they measure the players at the start of each season). In light of this, I'll change his height to 1.86m, waiting for an updated measurement he will get from EASPORTS FIFA pending his 3d scan at the start of the next season, thanks. My intentions were only to clarify his height, as I was confused looking at his height wrongly listed on multiple websites (the PL website, wikipedia, etc.).

Bkhd12 (talk) 11:25, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

I would say that a website which lists the heights used on the FIFA video game probably isn't an appropriate source, although I've changed the height anyway in accordance with Willock's profile on the Arsenal official site. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:22, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

Good job. For future reference, the heights on the 'FIFA' videogames are usually reliable as they do independent 3d scans and profiling with every Premier League club.

Brian McBride

I had edited Brian McBride's goal total for one of his seasons at Fulham but had not cited the source. I read the citation guide that you linked on my page, but I am still not sure how to cite a source for a table that already contains other information and doesn't appear to have a citation. The error in the table stood out to me because there has been a lot of talk of Christian Pulisic potentially tying Brian McBride on the list of most goals scored by an American in a single Premier League season. You can see here [1] that he never topped 10 league goals in a season. More broadly, is there a specific source that's considered the main authority for soccer statistics that Wikipedia pulls from, or does it depend on the league? Fernandinho (footballer, born May 1985)

Hi mattythewhite,

I noticed you've twice revert my change for fernandinho. once due to lack of citation and the other because it did not say the year.

Most websites states that he has won it with man city as he has made appearances for man city in the fa cup in the season they won it.

I've only found this link that states his winning year.

Also in citation #120 for fernandinho, it also states the same fact. FA Cup win in 2019.

Another link is soccerway.com which is used frequently for citations for other footballers' honours.

Link 1 --> New link [1]

Link 2 --> Citaton #120 on fernadinho page. [2]

Link 3 --> Same site used for Aguero citation #244 [3]

I think this is okay as a citation now.

Pls revert back my edits with the correct citations. Thanks.

Transfermarkt is not a reliable source, while Eurosport and Soccerway are notorious for listing honours regardless of whether the player was actually awarded the honour, e.g. listing Premier Leagues when players didn't make the requisite number of appearances. I can categorically state that I have not made any edits to Nick Pope (footballer) while signed out. You can request a WP:CU on my account to verify this.
I have no "narrative", I just want content to be verified by reliable sources that are independent of the subject. And we don't go by how tall people look on photos.

Dear Mattythewhite,

It honestly surprises me that someone could question a fact as notorious as Jair Bolsonaro being a far-right politician (and a self-admitted one at that). It surprises me even more that someone would actually go out of his way to state that, indeed, this is a run-of-the-mill conservative politician we're talking about there.

Now, I understand that, no matter how notorious a fact this might be, this is the sort of thing that might indeed fall outside the remit of someone who mainly curates football articles in Wikipedia - thus, I have added 6 reputable sources to that edit of mine (my first one on Wikipedia) that clearly attest the fact that the politician Juninho criticises is indeed a far-right politician - and not a... "conservative" politician. Incidentally, it looks like there was no source for him being a "conservative" politician - and yet that did not seem to be a problem.

Hope this clarified that this was no "edit troll" but instead a well-intentioned edit. Let's keep Wikipedia free from whitewashing and politically-motivated doublespeak, and call things by their names. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.80.151.87 (talk) 21:58, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

You do realise that the soccerway.com source covered all the honours, you don't need to spend time to source each one. Govvy (talk) 09:33, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

It's well known that Soccerway are a poor source for honours, as they include trophies for players regardless of whether they actually them, e.g. players being listed with the Premier League when they didn't make a single appearance. Mattythewhite (talk) 09:44, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
Yes and no, I feel it's good to have both, soccerway and the others, to have a balance. Govvy (talk) 09:48, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
I would say that that would be WP:CITEKILL. Mattythewhite (talk) 09:50, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Consensus

It is quite evidently the case that the vast majority of players and managers with pages on Wikipedia do not have runners-up listed alongside wins in honours sections. To take two obvious examples with multiple wins, you will not find runners-ups listed in the pages for Alex Ferguson or Lionel Messi, despite both having multiple runners-up positions that would be eligible. Given there is clearly no consensus on this, and given that the majority of pages do not include runners-up, can I ask why it is that you believe some pages should include them? If you believe all pages to have them, should you not seek consensus for this change, and then go about amending all pages (the two examples above would be a good place to start)? I would be grateful if you could confirm you will seek consensus for a change to the vast majority of pages, rather than targeting only a small number of pages to pull them out of line with other Wikipedia articles. Vaze50 (talk) 10:24, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

You're more than welcome to seek a project-wide consensus at WT:FOOTY. Otherwise, I highly recommend you cease edit warring, like you are at Jordan Henderson. Mattythewhite (talk) 09:45, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

You can undo my edit if you still think it is a disruptive editing. --Oltnilhn (talk) 00:44, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

Of course it needs to be sourced. This may be "simple information" to you, but it isn't to most readers. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:46, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

Honours - playing in finals

I note that you have removed honours from a number of players on the grounds that they did not play (or more specifically feature in the squad) in the final. However, it is common practice for a player to receive a winner's medal if they did feature in preceding games within the tournament (even if they did not feature in the final squad - for example, due to injury). What's the thinking here (genuine question)? Shef1234 (talk) 16:20, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

I've removed honours on the grounds that they're unsourced or poorly sourced, not necessarily because the player wasn't involved in the final. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:23, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Matty. That's helpful clarification. Just to confirm then - what constitutes sufficient sourcing? It can be quite difficult to source that a player actually has a winner's medal - particularly as lots of stats sites like Soccerway are unreliable. Taking for example the FA Cup, is it sufficient to demonstrate that a player featured in the tournament and that the team won the tournament? Shef1234 (talk) 07:08, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
Hi Matty. Can you explain why you've reversed the edits I made to Mathieu Flamini - since I provided sources for the edits I made? The original source that you've left in place also verifies the edits that I made? My aim here was to improve the sourcing of this section? Shef1234 (talk) 06:31, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
You've said yourself that Soccerway isn't reliable when it comes to honours, and Arsenal's official website isn't exactly an independent source when it comes to honours won by their players. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:15, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
To be honest, I sort of disagree about Arsenal being an independent source within this context - I think they probably know who won trophies for their own team! I also note that it's used as a comparable source in other pages (e.g. see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain). It would be helpful if you could provide some thoughts on my original question, which is what constitutes sufficient sourcing in this context? I think general consensus is that Flamini did "win" the 2005 FA Cup given he featured in four matches in the tournament in total. I have found a BBC article that backs up the interpretation (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/23804580) but would be useful to have a more general rule of sourcing to apply in these circumstances? Thanks again for your help Shef1234 (talk) 18:58, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

York City squad template

Hi Matty, just wondering if there's a reason why the players listed here are not transcluded in the squad template? JMHamo (talk) 16:25, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

Because the template has been updated to reflect their departures but their articles haven't been updated yet. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:28, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
That makes sense, thank you. Looks like York City will be very busy bringing in new players for the new season, I have never seen so many departures! JMHamo (talk) 16:32, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
That's if anyone wants to sign for us! We've been a graveyard for low-end professional footballers since c. May 2014. I would ask if Premier League newboys Fulham have any good young players available for loan but I wouldn't want to see their fledgling careers tarnished! Mattythewhite (talk) 16:38, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
Well at least York City has one or two goalkeepers left, unlike Birmingham City, who don't have one Senior goalkeeper available; maybe Stockdale will come back to York as a Striker... :) JMHamo (talk) 16:48, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

Consensus

Might I suggest we try getting some before there's back and forth on the topic of runners-up? There is no consistency on this topic anywhere, and it is incredibly frustrating to see people citing "consensus" for changes, when there isn't any. The common sense compromise of including runner-up titles except where it causes clutter seems to work well in most instances, so I suggest we practice that... User:Vaze50 (talk) 16:36, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Excluding notable content because it causes "clutter" doesn't seem to me to be a compromise grounded in "common sense", but maybe that's just me. You're welcome to seek to amend/establish consensus at an appropriate forum, which would be more constructive than repeatedly breaking the WP:BRD cycle. User:Umberto Bottura - request for unblock

Greetings! I've been in contact with a user and with Umberto Bottura, who is requesting to be unblocked on en.wiki.

He was blocked back in 2012 for sockpuppetry, and I see some messages left around 2014 by you on some IP user pages (example: User:186.225.6.248) about suspected sockpuppetry. Since the admin who blocked Umberto is no longer and admin and not very active, I figured I'd see if you have any insight on the request.

User claims he's edited cleanly at pt.wiki for several years. I looked at his talk page: a one-day block back in 2016 and the smattering of warning messages, but nothing I'd consider a pattern of bad behaviour. I'm leaning toward unblocking him: do you know anything in his case history that would make that a bad idea? —C.Fred (talk) 01:49, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello Mattythewhite. I added content in an article, Eric García (footballer, born 2001), but you removed it cuz I didn't provide a reliable source. My source it's same article from Russian wiki https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Гарсия,_Эрик. You can check all information there. It's same info that I added to Eric García (footballer, born 2001). Lepo (talk) 17:15, 2 September 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lepo93 (talkcontribs)

It doesn't matter if it's sourced at the Russian language wiki, it needs to be sourced here. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:25, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

That's fine. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:03, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Regarding your edit here; [2] I thought that a bit odd of a revert considering I added a bare ref for that in the newly added international goal table earlier! Which meant there was already a source for that in the article to use. Cheers. Govvy (talk) 08:37, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

I didn't see the reference that was added to the international goals table, and even then it needs a cite in the prose. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:03, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Timestamps

Hi Mattythewhite I noticed your message on my talk page regarding timestamps in the infobox of footballers. Slightly confused as this is something that I meticulously aim to do each time I update the caps of England youth footballers through my role at The Football Association. Do you have any specific examples? (Andycwalker (talk) 10:23, 12 September 2020 (UTC))

Just realised that it might have been because I've been updating manually (and recently via BST rather than UTC) rather than using the shortcut you highlighted? Andycwalker (talk) 10:43, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

It was based on you not updating the timestamp here, but yes, it should be done using five tildes (~~~~~). Mattythewhite (talk) 14:38, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

Mark Travers Edits

Hi, I recently removed some of the info in Mark Travers' National Caps section. The reason being that there is no information here, and it's basically just a big list of all the different age groups in the Republic of Ireland national squad. I removed the ones that there was no information for, and kept the ones that did, and added in the number of caps and the years he played for them. All of this was reverted and I'm not sure why, was it just because I didn't give a reason for removing? All the stuff I removed is pointless as there's no data in it anyway. Thanks NWCherries98 (talk) 21:09, 12 September 2020 (UTC)NWCherries98

eric dier height

I'm not wrong to list him as 6ft 2.5, just as you aren't wrong to list him as 6ft 2. However I won't be able to find a reference for this as people don't measure in half inchs, not officially at least. I just think its more accurate and interesting, because there are several players within the tottenham team with a height of 6ft 2, and Dier consistantly looks slightly taller than all of them in photos where they're standing side by side. You'll be able to find examples for yourself on google images. Hi mate, just wondering the reason you change the height from metres to inches for this page. The first edition of this page regarding height is in metres (19:04, 25 April 2015‎ IJA talk contribs‎ 946 bytes +946‎ ←Created page with '{{Infobox football biography | name = Dominic Calvert-Lewin | image = http://www.sufc.co.uk/cms_images/player/20131212-l-dom-calvert-lewin135-1...'). UCL article

Requesting your assistance in the UEFA Champions League article. There is an editor ignoring 3RR rules. He’s reverted four times, so is edit warring, and refuses to gain any consensus in the talk page. The material he’s inserted looks like original research, and the sourcing is also highly questionable. Nampa DC (talk) 22:58, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

Just to make it clear, one of the reverts against me was done by an account that only existed and edited for a day...
Also, I'd like to clarify that the guy reporting me here is also edit warring.
I started a debate on the talk page hours before this guy actually told me to start it, which shows a lot. Maxim.il89 (talk) 23:04, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

Louis Boyd

You removed the date of birth i added in Louis Boyd's profile due to not having a reliable source. There is however a reliable source claiming he was 15 years and 324 days old when he scored on 8th September [1]. Through simple maths you can work out the number of days in 15 years 324 day which is 5799 days. Minus that amount of days from the date 8th September to give the date of birth as 23rd October 2004 which is the date you removed

If you can work out a way to cite this feel free, if not add the DoB back in un-cited

I'm not going to add the date of birth without a source. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:38, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Everton out on loan section

Hi Matty. User ChrisCheekos keep deleting the Everton reserves and u-23 out on loan section that I created with no valid reason. (1.https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Everton_F.C.&action=history) (2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everton_F.C._Reserves_and_Academy). The four players in question who are out on loan are reserves and u-23 players and they are not listed in the first team squad (https://www.evertonfc.com/teams/first-team). In fact they are listed as u-23 players (https://www.evertonfc.com/teams/under-23s) in the official site. I also notice that almost all Wiki Premier League clubs pages do have separate out on loan section for first team squads as well as reserves/u-23 squads. In other words, first team players out on loan and reserves/u-23 players out on loan are not listed in the same section. Just like first team squad list do not share the same section with its reserves/u-23 squad list. Thus, I created a separate out on loan section for Everton reserves/u-23 players yet ChrisCheekos undo my amendments. Could you please advise me what to do thank you so much. 16:19, 29 September 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Haklam1218 (talkcontribs)

Hey. Thought I'd let you know my thoughts about the introduction to Ruben Dias's article. I've had a look at other players playing in the Premier League and, as far as I can see, none of them have it specified as the "English Premier League". I'd say it's enough of a clarification already, considering it also says "Manchester" right next to it. I'd also like to hear your thoughts regarding the issue. Thanks for your time. Hey, you said that I didn't put any reliable souce. You can clearly see that he was memeber of Chelsea first team for the 2018-19 seasnon. So he won UEFA Europa League altrought he didn t play any game. Alvaro Morata and Victor Moses played matches for Chelsea in group stage so they are winner of that season's Europa league. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LukaOJ (talkcontribs) 21:14, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

There needs to be a reliable source that states the won the competition. The fact he made a few appearances in the earlier rounds isn't sufficient. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:39, 28 September 2020 (UTC).
