Re: Forgot to switch accounts

No, I didn't forget to switch accounts, and yes, I decided it would be best to make it clear that both accounts are mine. I didn't do so initially because I didn't want to cause yet more fuss – Qxz 12:21, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Talk archive header

I think it would be good to have the archiver put the {{talkarchive}} template at the top of each archive page. Sancho (talk) 16:25, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know that. That was the reason they gave when deleting "Wikipedians who support Hezbollah". Where I come from, they call it double-standards. KlakSonnKeep it to yourself 18:19, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unless this account is sockpuppet or has made inappropriete edits, vandalism, trolling, personal attacks, harassment, etc., I just want to point out that I think the account creation block should still be lifted, only blocking the username, not the ability to create a new account for the IP from which the account originated from(Unless if the IP has a history of repeated malicious account creation).--U.S.A.U.S.A.U.S.A. Bot functionality

Question: Do your three archiving bots need it so that timestamps are in the pages themselves? I tried to set up MiszaBot II for archiving Wikipedia:Recent additions but so far nothing has happened, so I'm wondering if it determines which comments to archive based on timestamps in the edit form, or from the page history? Thanks. howcheng {chat} 18:39, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's only capable of archiving entire sections, that is from one == blah == to another == foor bar ==. And it scans for timestamps inside these section. Sections without timestamps are ignored. So, since there's only one section on Wikipedia:Recent additions ("Did you know..."), and it doesn't contain any ~~~~-type timestamps, none of my bots will ever touch that page. It's really a discussion archiver, nothing more. Миша13 19:03, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info. howcheng {chat} 19:32, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MiszaBotIII query

I have changed the arhival target in {{AutoArchivingNotice}}, from User talk:Steptrip/Archive_2 to User talk:Steptrip/Archive_3, but the bot continues to archive messages to the former target, instead of the latter ... any idea what's up / how to fix it?  ~Steptrip 14:28, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Because the bot doesn't care about the {{AutoArchivingNotice}} at all and neither does it update it. all it honors is the link to User:MiszaBot/config and it's settings. Also, can you tell me why do you use two bots for archiving? Миша13 14:46, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think I use two archival bots because I started out with Werdnabot, but when it went offline, I turned to MiszaBotIII, and I have to say, your bot is better than Werdnabot and Shadowbot3. To change the archival settings, do I just adjust the target in the MiszaBot/Config box?  ~Steptrip 17:38, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. You can read about the various options on User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo. Миша13 17:43, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Block

You blocked User:John A. Robinson for username. An WP:RFCN is underway so the user should be unblocked to allow them to contribute in this. If i have made a mistake please tell me. G Donato (talk to me...) 21:18, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is an RFC discussion of your username block of John A. Robinson (talk · contribs). Sam Blacketer 21:19, 4 April 2007 (UTC) (added simultaneously with the above - sorry Sam Blacketer 21:20, 4 April 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Yes, I'm not sure why you made this block... please comment. Generally, you should explain why in the block log. [2] Mahalo. --Ali'i 21:22, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I get it. This is a Johnny the Vandal username. A completely perfect example of why blocks should not be decided by committee. I've reinstated the block and closed the RFCN. Mangojuicetalk 01:25, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for not consulting you. Seems like we have another yellow-light name. I raised this issue on WT:U. BuickCenturydriver (Honk, contribs) 01:46, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My bad for unblocking. Ill be more careful in the future. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 02:04, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wait and be careful I checked into this, Johnny the Vandal's sock was User:John Robinson Freeq, not John A. Robinson, completely different. It could be someone else who's real name is John A. Robinson, like J. Alan Robinson, if it's him, as it is a common name. Also the user has done no vandalism in his contrib page, how do u know he's the vandal? WooyiTalk, Editor review 02:45, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seems I have missed the entire discussion while asleep. If anyone still cares about my explanation, then yes - Johny the Vandal creates all sorts of usernames in the form of "John <second name (sometimes abreviated)> Robinson" and I block then routinely, pending confirmation. And the confirmation usually comes in the form of an incomprehensible or abusive {{unblock}} request. Миша13 07:49, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' noticeboard archive

Hi. I've kept track of new Administrators' noticeboards archives and added {{Administrators' noticeboard navbox all}} whenever new pages are created, as well as updating the navboxes. Lately, I noticed that when MiszaBot archives the admins' noticeboards, it adds {{talkpage}} tag at the top, which is odd, since an archive is not a talkpage. However, if MiszaBot can be programmed to add {{Administrators' noticeboard navbox all}} instead of {{talkpage}}, it would save me a bit of work. --Edokter (Talk) 21:29, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't have this functionality yet, but I'll hopefully work on it in the following days and let you know. Cheers, Миша13 07:51, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Essjay spoofs

Thanks for blocking 4 of those inflammatory Essjay spoofs. God, I type in two usernames of well-known admins at Special:Listusers and I have a full page of inflammatory usernames. Bot created archives

Hi. Wouldn't it be nicer to make the bots start new archives with {{talkarchive}} instead of {{talkheader}} as they are doing now? talkheader template is usually put in articles talk pages only. Thanks. --Meno25 23:42, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Changed. My bad, obviously. Миша13 09:43, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Relatively serious MiszaBot error?

This archiving doesn't seem to have made it to the specified archive page... -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 00:45, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch, thanks. Reading from the logs, it seems the bot got some kind of unexpected error when commiting the edit to the archive, but didn't realize that the edit didn't come through (more an unclear pywikipedia bug than in the logic of my program). I have archived those 5 sections manually and will reset the bot to first save the archives and then the page, so that there's no chance of data loss (at worst, duplicated threads would appear in the archives). Миша13 09:47, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bot availability on other Wikis?

Hi -- I edit here and on the ISFDB Wiki, and have been using Werdnabot for archiving my own talk page. I noticed your bots and was wondering if it would be possible to use them on the ISFDB Wiki. Is that something you might be interested in? If so, I can talk to a couple of folks over there and we can see if it's technically possible. Thanks -- Mike Christie (talk) 14:51, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This should be easily doable soon. For one thing, the bot is based on the pywikipedia framework, so should work on any MediaWiki. I'm also planning on releasing the source code soonish, so that anyone can make use of it on their own. Миша13 22:41, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to hear it. Is there a page I can watchlist that will mention when the source code is released? Thanks. Mike Christie (talk) 02:38, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, now the bot didn't archive all of the threads over 7 days. - PatricknoddyTALK (reply here)|HISTORY 19:33, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Your talk page exhibited some ancient posts with non-standard timestamp formats. I've expanded the pattern as far as possible. Threads with unusual or missing timestamps will be ignored. Миша13 20:07, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't the bot remove the comments once he archives them? He isn't on mine. - PatricknoddyTALK (reply here)|HISTORY 21:00, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me? It's removing them just fine. Can you find a thread that it has archived and left on you talk page? Миша13 21:19, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The article licensing notice. - PatricknoddyTALK (reply here)|HISTORY 12:56, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That thread is nowhere to be found in the archives (so it's not like you suggest - that the bot archived it and didn't remove). Furthermore, it will never be, because my bot ignores messages without timestamps. You are welcome to archive it on your own. Миша13 13:45, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chatter

Hi Misha! I haven't seen you around in a while—I guess the disintegration of Esperanza split up a lot of us wikipedians, eh? I thought you'd appreciate a non-bot-related thread on your talkpage (it looks like you've inherited a lot of Essjay's stress). I like the cyrillic alphabet in your signature, I've been considering using it in my own. Drop by and leave me a note sometime. Cheers, The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 14:55, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I feel the same way Esperanza. I miss the IRC and coffee lounge, they helped give a lot of wikipedians the opportunity to show their silly side here—and despite the public opinion, I still think that that matters. But I was also disappointed to see Esperanza so bureaucratic towards the end. We lost a lot of metapedians who made this place fun. So many of them have been banned, quit, or have just gradually disappeared...it's funny how some people just fade away. Jak zopomniec, eh? ;-)
Regarding adminship, I haven't re-applied since my first attempt. I'm in no hurry; I'd rather be prepared than enter into adminship by the seat of pants, although it is becoming increasingly evident that I'll never be completely ready. I've actually received admin coaching, although my coach has either left or is on wikibreak since March 23. If he isn't back by the beginning of May, I may just go ahead with an RFA. And thank you for the compliment, by the way. Say, would you like to nominate me? User:Seivad has called dibs first, so I guess it would be more of a conom, but I would be honored all the same if you did when the time came. Talk archives and name changes

Hello, Miza13. Your bot recently started archiving my talk page, but I have since renamed myself from PullToOpen to Sean William. Miszabot I

Obviously I did something wrong with trying to get Miszabot I to stop archiving Talk:Barack Obama to a full archive. Since I added the config information to the talk page to automatically shift to the next archive if the current archive is full[3] Miszabot I has been copying one section to the full archive and then the remaining sections to the new archive.

What did I do wrong? Thanks! --Bobblehead 21:11, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My guess is you messed up badly here, by introducing a second template to the page (skim through the code after your edit) which confused the bot badly (it used the first one to read config, but apparently only updated the second). I have fixed it and it should be fine now (you may toss around the erroneuosly archived threads, if you care). Миша13 21:30, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I knew I screwed up somewhere. I was looking for the config template near the "this page is archived by Miszabot I" template and totally missed the config up at the top. Go me! thanks for fixing my mess up. --Bobblehead 21:39, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question on Watchlist sorter.

Hello.

I have installed the Watchlist sorter tool using monobook.js. Could you please explain how to use it? How is it different from the drop-down menu present on the watchlist? --Aarktica 19:16, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quite different - while the dropdown hides all namespaces except the one you choose, this thing groups edits by namespace and keeps all visible. If you don't see any difference on your watchlist then perhaps you don't have enough items? Миша13 19:22, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There currently six items on the watchlist; is there a minimum number of edits required to notice the tool's benefits? --Aarktica 19:46, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
At a few from different namespaces (article, wikipedia, user talk). Here's how it looks like on a quite big watchlist: [4] Миша13 19:54, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for the illustration; that was very helpful. A picture is indeed worth a thousand words. Including that picture on the Scripts page might go a long way to answering questions from newbies. Cheers. --Aarktica 20:04, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Filtering scripts

I have another related question.

Recently, I have been scanning WP:AFD pages for outdated and unclosed discussions. Seeing that these are few and far between, it is rather difficult wading through the volumes of closed discussions. In other words, this is a "needle in the haystack" issue.

Do you know of any tools available to filter out closed AfD discussions, which would make it easier to see which ones are open? --Aarktica 16:39, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, I haven't seem any tool of this sort. Perhaps there's way for invention here for people with abundant amounts of free time (don't look at me ;-) ). Миша13 17:14, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like it might not be necessary after all; I just noticed that links to open AfDs which are five or six days old are provided on the AfD page. Cheers. --Aarktica 18:53, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Able to not do unreplied?

Does you bot have a setting on whether or not to archive unreplied comments? --TeckWiz is now R ParlateContribs@(Lets go Yankees!) 19:23, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, and I have no idea whatsoever how to detect whether a thread has been replied to or not. Миша13 19:56, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
WerdnaBot used to base it on 2 signatures. Why not ask the user to include their raw signature into the template and checking each section to see if that sig appears. Also, why not skip SuggestBot recommendations, and Signpost newsletters during archiving (i.e. removal), as they aren't exactly talk items. --NigelJ talk SIMPLE 22:34, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not as easy as it sounds. Some users change their signatures like crazy and would have to keep the config in sync with the current one - in case they forgot, they would most likely have stormed my talk pase shouting "OMGWHYDOESNTITWORKITSB0RKENBLOCKIT!" and whatnot. Second, I treat SuggestBot and Signpost just like any other item, so it's more a matter of preference (would you like them to linger forever on your talkpage?). Миша13 09:37, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually sig tracking should be much easier with a well designed regex... basically all your looking for is "link to subjects userpage/user talkpage + ??:??, ?? (March|April|May...) ???? (UTC)", as for SuggestBot I was thinking discard, of course, with config option to enable/disable
An afterthought (just before hitting Save), another idea is adding <!--ARCHIVE--> at the end of a section, then base on standard time for sections marked for archive, and standard time + 2 months or something for sections not marked (for Wikibreaks etc). --NigelJ talk SIMPLE 10:21, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In that case, I'm afraid the answer is no, we cannot retrieve a user's password nor change it (nor is it malicious intent by anyone). Possibly only a developer could, but I haven't heard that happen, ever. It's simple - the password is supposed to verify that the user is who he claims to be - if anyone could request a new password for anyone, that wouldn't be much of a security. I suggest creating a new account and setting an email for it, so that a password reminder can be sent. Миша13 12:06, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Status Script

Hello, I was looking over your status changing script and was wondering if you could get it to work with my templates. The two pages are at User:Extranet/Status and User:Extranet/Status2. The first page is the main status one, where the template that is in it ({{User:Extranet/Status2|STATUS}}) needs to be changed from "STATUS" to either "online", "busy", "away" or "offline" to make it work. The second page is the code one, where the code is available here to view. If you could possibly code a monobook.js file to fit it, it would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 01:22, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can tell, your templates are set up correctly. All you need to do is edit your monobook and add the function from User:Misza13/Scripts/Status switcher (the one that starts at // STATUS CHANGER) (can be put anywhere, for example at the end of your monobook). Afterwards, you probably need to purge your browser's cache. Миша13 07:20, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like its working fine, I just had to add the extras to the monobook script and it looks great! Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 08:08, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

TellyAddict's comment at AIV was cryptic to say the least. He said this user was a sock of "you know who" but I don't know who and there's no contributions to check. You gave him a usernameblock while I don't see anything particularly wrong with the name. Can you fill me in on the specifics behind the block? - Mgm|(talk) 09:48, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As the userpage now says, it's a sockpuppet of User:Mr oompapa, a banned user. Миша13 11:51, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template:RfA

Thank you for protecting that, although admittedly "my" version was protected (although that's the version that's been around for years), I like to think that even if you'd protected "the wrong version" I'd still be saying you made a great call. I suggest leaving it protected for at least a day, not just a few hours as it was last night. --W.marsh 18:06, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding of m:wrong version is that my protection merely intends to stop an edit war - I recuse myself from endorsing any particular version (like I would having reverted as well). I am ready to force the protection until the dispute is resolved somehow (and that there are several POVs on this, that's for sure, hence, some compromise has to be arranged). Миша13 18:11, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree totally, I just didn't want to sound like I was thanking you just for protecting the "right" version, but for stopping the harmful edit war. --W.marsh 18:18, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
To be equaly frank, I have not seen your revert at the point of writing my protection summary, only afterwards. But then again, it didn't matter to me which version was protected (unless it was a vandalised one. ;-) Cheers! Миша13 18:24, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

bot not working

On Talk:Seung-Hui Cho , your bot hasnt archived anything in a good while , i changed 20h to 1d to see if that helps as it work on a 2d config before (Gnevin 08:01, 24 April 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Done. I was aware of that and have been so far ignoring it on purpose, waiting for the article's title to stabilize. Миша13 09:33, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks , keep up the great work(Gnevin 10:20, 24 April 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Still Archiving?

Hey, just out of curiosity - are you still archiving Wikipedia:Requested templates/Uncategorized? It seems like nothing has been in a while - but at the same time, it could be that just the threads there are excessively long.danielfolsom© 15:07, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Should be fine. At this moment I can't see any threads falling outside the 15-day treshold (all thread dates are 10 April or further), so yes - all discussions seem to take long time to end. Миша13 15:48, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Misza! :)

Dear Misza, it's so good to see you again! :) Your warm words came as a beautiful surprise, and it's wonderful to see friendly faces like you after so long. How's life been treating you since we last saw each other? I pray you're doing fine, and that your day is as happy as mine was, thanks to you. Come and visit me anytime, please, and tell me how you're doing, k? I'll be waiting for you :) Hugs! Phaedriel - 23:00, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thanks

Thanks for reverting that edit to my talk page and blocking that user. It seems I was on the only contribution from that use. Was I singled out? —mako (talkcontribs) 18:46, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. Actually it was one out of a whole series of accounts exhibiting the same vandalistic pattern (attacking user talk pages). Миша13 18:50, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again

Hello Misha, I just wanted to let you know that I've set back my date for my RFA at the request of my coach. It'll probably be another few weeks. I hope this doesn't complicate things (or at least not on the same level as DEFCON :-P). Are you still up for being the co-nom? The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me)

Heh, no big deal, but we certainly could use a new admin (we need them in truckloads :-P ). And yes, I will still gladly participate in the nomination. Миша13 19:07, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thanks for being flexible :-) The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 21:57, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help with archive setup

Hi Misza, I'm attempting to implement your archive bot for my user talk page but seem to have something set up wrong. I'd like the archive files/list do be stored and displayed similar to the format on your talk page. The text/link 'Any sections older than 10 days are automatically archived here' links to User talk:Вasil/Archive where I have to manuall create links. It appears the links are auto-generated on your page. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, Вasil | talk 01:20, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not. :) Like you, I also have an archive map that I have update manually. I think Werdnabot (now known as Shadowbot3) used to have this ability, but I haven't looked through its code to incorporate that too. Миша13 08:55, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but how do you get the archive map to display on your talk page? I don't see any calls or parameters on that page. Thanks, Вasil | talk 17:43, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, there is {{User:Misza13/Talk Header}} on top of this page. If you visit User:Misza13/Talk Header, you should find {{User:Misza13/Archive Map|width=250px}} hidden there (close to the end of the page). Миша13 18:13, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Cleverly hidden! With your permission, I might emulate some of this. Вasil | talk 20:42, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead. My contributions are licensed as {{TextLicenseFreeUse}} (free use), so you may copy without restrictions. ;-) Миша13 20:50, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
