2019 US Banknote Contest[edit]

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

New Page Review newsletter November 2019[edit]

Hello SL93,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 818 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:12, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020[edit]

Hello SL93,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020[edit]

Hello SL93,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Hook visuals[edit]

Hi SL93, thanks very much for pitching in and building prep sets! FYI I moved your Prep 5 down to Prep 6 because there were two people image hooks in a row. We try to vary the image hook among people/plants/buildings/paintings/graphs, etc.

It was recently brought to my attention that the look of the prep sets could be improved by staggering the way the bolded links appear. Instead of running one hook after another that has the bolded link at the beginning, we are trying to vary the placement of the bolded link for a more pleasing overall look—see for example Preps 1 and 4. It does take more time, I'll admit, and sometimes I'll promote hooks over 2 sets while I'm looking to achieve a nice staggered look, but I think it pays off in the end. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 12:39, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Yoninah: The bolded link placement seems more trouble than it's worth. I was just focusing on building a balanced set while trying to clear out old nominations. SL93 (talk) 14:23, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. But it does look nicer. Yoninah (talk) 15:03, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I probably won't be doing preps if it is a new requirement. SL93 (talk) 16:39, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Yoninah: I gave what you said a go in prep 5. SL93 (talk) 01:09, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, it looks great! Did it take longer than usual? Yoninah (talk) 09:30, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Yoninah: It look a bit longer than usual, but it's fine. SL93 (talk) 17:16, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Yoninah (talk) 19:17, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. I see you're working very hard to stagger the bolded links. I just want to mention that you can preview the set as you build it by clicking on the link under the edit window for the prep set you're working on. You might see that even if you run two hooks in a row with a bolded link in the beginning, a longish hook will also separate out the bolding nicely. Best, Yoninah (talk) 10:19, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Yoninah: I tend to mess things up when I do some things on Wikipedia all at once. For example, I tag articles that I want to expand with an in use tag so I can write the article in parts and section by section. SL93 (talk) 10:38, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. Thanks for building sets! I just wanted to mention that I and other prep builders have been putting 3 bio hooks in each set instead of 4, since we seem to have less of them. Best, Yoninah (talk) 21:18, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Noticed all the good work you're doing at Joanna Cole (author). I have just nominated the article for inclusion at Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates. You may want to at least support the nomination, and perhaps add further comments. HiLo48 (talk) 04:38, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@HiLo48: Thanks for letting me know. I was annoyed that her article was almost total crap because I grew up with her Magic School House books and she lived in the same city as me (Sioux City, Iowa). SL93 (talk) 04:40, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I come from just a little further away, Australia. But even some of us foreigners have heard of The Magic School Bus. In my case it was as a teacher, where I made use of some of the video games. Very engaging for students. HiLo48 (talk) 05:20, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hook interest[edit]

I don't really appreciate your comment on Template:Did you know nominations/Casilda Iturrizar. My interest has never been to advocate for my opinion but to get the best hook possible on the main page. I do appreciate your asking me to explain my objection so we can get a consensus. It does seem to me that these articles you've been nominating lately (Molly Neptune Parker and this) are rather sketchy and don't have much to work with to develop a good hook. Yoninah (talk) 19:36, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Yoninah: I honestly disagree with you on Casilda Iturrizar. SL93 (talk) 19:39, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I submitted a new hook that mentions two things that were named after her, as well as mentioning the street plaque that memorializes her. SL93 (talk) 19:45, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Yoninah: From what I've seen at DYK for awhile, the best possible hook is always what matches your opinion. It's actually a really annoying common occurrence. Maybe it's because other editors don't have the guts to disagree with the person who promotes their hook. SL93 (talk) 20:17, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@SL93: Sorry to barge in, but this is simply not true. As someone who has disputed with Yoninah in the past, they turn out to be right about consensus more often than not. If you disagree with them, you can try what I did, bringing it up on WT:DYK for broader discussion. For me that was a humbling experience: Yoninah is a veteran, and pretty much understands Wikipedian consensus regarding what DYK hooks should look like. Of course they are human and make mistakes like all of us, but they've been doing this a lot longer than I have, that's for sure. I was sure they were wrong and other editors would see my side; in the end everyone who commented agreed with Yoninah. For what it's worth, I read hooks ALT3 and ALT3.1 and agree with Yoninah, there is a real hook interest problem here. Psiĥedelisto (talkcontribs) please always ping! 23:48, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Psiĥedelisto: I was wrong about what I said and I apologized on Yoninah's talk page. As for the hook interest, we would really need to backtrack on hooks about things that are named after other things if we can definitely say such things can't be considered interesting. I don't feel like being the guinea pig for that. There have been a few times when others have claimed my hooks are not interesting and I'm glad that I stuck up for those hooks because they received enough views while on the main page. SL93 (talk) 23:52, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For example, Template:Did you know nominations/Teshio River which is in a prep now and my hook Template:Did you know nominations/Agnes Samuelson which was on the main page recently. For the first DYK, most of the places in Hokkaido came from Ainu language. SL93 (talk) 00:14, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Prep 1[edit]

Hi, you have two death hooks in the same set. Also, execution by hanging isn't "quirky". Best, Yoninah (talk) 10:32, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The quirkiness is in its phrasing and not that it was an execution by hanging. Though I don’t care if it’s moved to another prep. Also, no one is going to be dumb enough to think that she came back to life. SL93 (talk) 12:08, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 08:01:57, 9 September 2020 for assistance on AfC submission by Schnoebi[edit]

I am disappointed and rather disheartened that you concluded that this article reads like an advertisement. This is not an advertisement. It describes a well established and internationally recognised educational charity that is encouraging the designing and making of medals. It works with art collages in the UK and overseas to encourage the craftsmanship of medal making (coin design); a tradition that spans over a 1000 years. It is supported by the British Museum. I could go on, but I am deflated... The article is informative and accurate.

If someone can assist me in restyling the article to read less like an advertisement, I would be very grateful. --Schnoebi (talk) 08:01, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Schnoebi An article should not use promotional language such as "were instrumental", "internationally acclaimed", and "its aim". SL93 (talk) 13:07, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

--Schnoebi (talk) 12:37, 11 September 2020 (UTC)Ok. I will review.[reply]
I have modified as follows:

  • "were instrumental" - the two people were instrumental in the formation of the society. This does not promote the society. I have replaced with the word "Key people"
  • "internationally acclaimed" - Yes, that is promotional. Sorry about that. I have changed to: "international"
  • "its aim", ambiguous and changed to "the project was designed to"

I could not find any more promotional language. Thank you SL93 for your input.
Thank you again. Schnoebi

Disagree with assessment. I disagree with the assessment that the Draft:Radical Monopoly article does not have sufficient coverage, it deprives the community of the opportunity to develop the concept that has been cited in social science papers and re-shared around the internet for over 30 years, and predicted a concept that is more relevant in current culture than the original author could have predicted.

I made the changes the initial editor requested, and then it was declined for another unrelated reason. I've taken it as far as it needs to go, and this process seems shady.

JamesSerieDno4 (talk) 23:42, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

JamesSerieDno4 While you did include other papers, you didn't reference them correctly (look at the references section to see how it should be). There shouldn't be external links in the body of an article. If you reference the papers correctly, I will accept the draft. SL93 (talk) 23:54, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, I dont understand why you declined the draft...i added more links but would love to better understand since The Spirit of Israel is a huge and importent non-profit organization in Israel and has been so for the past years. Please help me better understand and also fix what needed.. I also would like you to know that I submitted it only after I spend hours on the live chat and did eveything I was asked. Shir2020 I noticed two aspects of what is typically advertising jargon - "with the aim of" and "aim to empower". I try to be extra careful for such language when there is a declared close connection to the subject. While it isn't required for approval, making sure that every statement is referenced would be a huge help if you felt like doing such a thing. SL93 (talk) 09:55, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 12:03:13, 28 September 2020 for assistance on AfC submission by Torresjrjr[edit]

I believe this article submission deserves to be accepted, not rejected.

I cite https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(software)#Reliability_and_significance_of_sources

> Common sense and an awareness of historical context should be used in determining whether coverage in sources found for an app is in fact reliable and significant. Factors that may impact on the evaluation of sources include: > The way the app is distributed. It is reasonable to allow relatively informal sources for free and open-source software, if significance can be shown. For instance, Usenet posts may be acceptable sources for some guy's homebrewed Unix clone [refering to Linus' Linux].

Pleroma's notability is not temporary. Pleroma is Free and Open Source, which is important because it will hardly ever recieve a reference from an established news source since it isn't a product. It's notability stems from it's history and community. You could consider this an article regarding a community based on some software. Therefore, I believe the following citation is *not* applicable to this submission.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(software)#Promotion_and_scope

The Mastodon_(software) and PeerTube article are perfect examples of what the Pleroma article could and should be. Pleroma is arguably as notable as those two. It's certainly more notable than PeerTube in terms of numbers. I've written this article with the stub template, beacuse I think this submission is capable of expansion regarding newsworthy internet history.

Please reconsider this submission. Thank you for your time.

Hi, thanks for doing a set. You have 2 hooks by the same nominator, though. Please move one to another set, preferably a few sets down, as we have quite a few of these television play hooks.

There's also a DYK credit line missing. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:03, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yoninah I fixed it, but moving it a few sets down isn't possible with only one empty set. SL93 (talk) 22:40, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK. So I returned it to the Approved page for a later promotion. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:44, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but this editor is nominating lots of 1950s American television play articles, with pretty much the same hook angle for each one (i.e. a quote praising the production).
