Hello!

I have noticed your contribution to MediaWiki:Common.js and would like your help. As you see, on english wikipedia the edit button on different sections of an article is on the right side of the page. I work on dv.wikipedia and it is written from right to left (unlike en.wiki which is written left to right) In our wiki, the edit button of section is on the right side, next to the heading. This is bugzilla:24901, which was since fixed in the software, but the fix is not yet deployed for the wiki's yet. You can fix it locally by adding:

.editsection { float: left }

to dv:MediaWiki:Vector.css. Once the software is updated ( somewhere between now and new years eve ) this can be removed again from your local wiki. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 11:35, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for the belated response, my watchlist is extremely long. Well Online, Away, Busy, Offline, Sleep and School/Work are the ones that'd be most useful. Also if a user has the UTC Live Clock in Preferences installed then Qui displays on the next line below the top-right nav ribbon, is there a way to fix that? Sidebar help

Hi. Re: WP:VPR#Moving the Help link in the sidebar, I believe you might be mistaken regarding "... by default, the Interaction tab is collapsed ...". I tried a few variations of browsers, all logged-out, and consistently had the "Interaction" and "Languages" sections appear open by default. (I dimly recall some ~~arguments~~ discussions about this...). Possibly you are seeing sections collapsed (even if logged out) due to a cookie, or something? MediaWiki:Common.js/secure.js

Given the comments here (saying that Ganglia also should be added to the bypass list), and the fact that there are about 10 WMF projects, wouldn't it be more effective if there was only a "whitelist" for adding the WMF projects (which all have a secure version), such as Wikipedia, Wikiversity, Wikinews, Wiktionary, etc? I think that the ones that start with "wik" can have its own paranthesis, so that we don't have to repeat the "wik" part for those projects that start with that part.

Regarding mediawiki.org and wikimediafoundation.org, it should also work using "http://www." in the beginning. If there are non-WMF projects or other missing WMF projects that have a secure version, they can easily be added by an administrator, but this is definitely the most efficient way, instead of just adding projects to the bypass list.

iPhone CSS fix

Ok, been looking into this. jQuery does not run by default and the iphone and ipod classes can thus not be used. We need to target mobile devices, because this option works on ALL webkit, so will also disable text zooming on Safari Desktop. Solution is to use a media query like this:

Tablesorter.com adaptation

(Re: this discussion from MediaWiki talk:Common.js) OK, so the planned migration is firm. I had taken the earlier answer as an definite-maybe.

I looked at the jquery.tablesorter.js script and it appears to do a good job of handling rowspan and colspan in the header, but not the body. As far as adapting it to MediaWiki, I assume we would need some function to map the existing "sortable" class to "tablesorter", or modify the .js to recognize the "sortable" class. We would also need to move the header rows into a thead block. That would give us the basic functionality, but I would assume you or someone is already working on that. Rows tagged as "sortbottom" and "unsortable" (fixed-in-place) likely present some complications that might require some changes to the core sort algorithm. Perhaps some kind of before-sort and after-sort callbacks might allow custom code to set aside and later restore the fixed data rows. I am sure there are many other issues regarding the features and quirks of the current implementation that would best be preserved to maintain backward compatibility.

Popups

Was thinking about copying MW Popups and making my own variant, but before I create that kind of a code fork I thought I'd run an idea by you and see if you think this would make sense to change for everyone who uses the interface. The idea, put simply, is that when mousing over any talk page (user talk, article talk, WP talk, etc...) instead of seeing a preview (which I feel like is usually an out of date top line of the talk page, or some other non-relevant content) the default action would be to see the history of the page. This wouldn't change the beauty of reading popups mid-article (where you can see the lead of the other article you are hovering over) but it would benefit people who review their watchlist for vandalism... or perhaps, any time you are reviewing your watchlist the default action should be to show history. Think this would be useful for others, or should I keep my big ideas to myself? 7 06:49, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

The bug reappeared when I was editing Egyptian Revolution of 2011. Very ! Freaky ! It's seems to be relate to Chrome, lastfm.js, and the edition of Mediawiki... It's when editing a page, but not systematic. Just some times. However, the risk is hight, about 1 out of 4~5 edits, and the bugging page forbidden access to the save/revert button, which make the clean up difficult. So I encourage you to state in User:TheDJ/lastfm.js that this js code is 'dangerous' for Chrome users.

I completely understand your frustration; personally, I think sometimes people are far too quick to complain (especially when the site is provided for free, but some people will just bitch no matter what), and the Internet's tendency for comments to become excessively grand ("oh man, this mundane change is the WORST EVAR!!!11!!!one!!") certainly doesn't help, but take a deep breath and don't let it get to you.

Bug 27508

Could you please take a look at this bug? I have a feeling that this might be related to the other SVG problems that were pointed out at the Commons. (However, it's entirely possible that it is something else entirely.) Lupo 21:18, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

That bug requires the powers of a sysadmin, I'm just a developer. I already tried pointing it out multiple times, but people are rather busy. I'm not so sure it's related to the SVG issues though. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 12:32, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

That's a 12(!) MB SVG file... 99% of which is made up of a really large, BASE64 encoded PNG file. I suspect that's the reason Mediawiki chokes on it. It displays fine, but trying to view the source even hangs Chrome for 10 minutes. — Edokter (talk) — 20:17, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

What is really strange is that even including only a link to that image (in the form [[:File:Puerto_Rico_ecosystems_map-fr.svg]], so no display of this SVG), hangs MediaWiki. It would be understandable if MediaWiki had problems displaying this file; but that it chokes already on just referencing its description page is really bizarre. Furthermore, there is a second file; [[:File:Puerto_Rico_ecosystems_map-en.svg]], which has the same size and structure (it's also a 12MB SVG with a huge embedded PNG), that does not exhibit this problem: including a link to the "...-en.svg" file does not hang MediaWiki. When I get home, i'll try uploading the file to my local dev installation, and then I can check the debug to see what is going on. Probably the new parser is totally puking on it, causing the metadata to never get set. New Courier font in edit mode

Hi DJ, as you've been addressing some of the issues on the PUMP, would you mind taking a look (if and when you have time) at the thread about the Courier font having appeared in edit mode? It's not so easy to edit with, and it's causing some distortions with symbols. Any advice about how to get our old fonts back in edit mode would be much appreciated. I've checked it with various browsers, and it's the same, and no settings have been changed. See Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Editing. Propose Some Images for Deletion

Hey there,

I would like some images of mine removed from Wikipedia/Wikimedia; I don't want to be associated with them, and they sometimes come up when my name is Googled. They also serve no real purpose, and are not being used on any Wikis and do not contribute anything useful. I was wondering if you or any other admin could delete them. The images in question are:

MediaWiki:Common.css/WinFixes.css

Hi TheDJ

Since you're the one who created MediaWiki:Common.css/WinFixes.css, perhaps you can help: There are still lots of templates out there that continue using explicit font definitions, just like {{IPA}}, {{polytonic}} and {{Unicode}} used to do before you created WinFixes.css. It would be great if all explicit font definitions were concentrated in WinFixes.css so the explicit font definitions would no longer affect users with a capable browser.

Some of the templates that continue using explicit font definitions include: {{script/Hebrew}} (which already assigns an unused class="script-hebrew"), {{lang-he-n}}, {{lang-he}}, {{script/Gaelic}}, {{script/Cuneiform}}, {{script/Runic}}, {{script/Coptic}}, {{script/Phoenician}}, {{script/Slavonic}}, {{okina}}.

I don't have the time, nor do I know who else can do this. In general however, I would point out that centralized CSS is preserved to the most commonly used elements, since they are distributed to ALL users, as opposed to templated css which is only distributed to the people who read the pages on which the templates are used. Thanks anyway! Of course, WinFixes.css is not distributed to all users, whereas it is really all users that are affected by font definitions in templates. The help desk needs a scripting expert

The Help desk team are trying to put together an edit notice for the main Help Desk page. Upgrade needed on nlwiki for GoogleTrans gadget

Hi TheDJ,

I've had to upgrade GoogleTrans to support IE9 (adding 'px' to pixel length and widths!). I haven't been able to do this on the nlwiki since BarkingFish, who owns the gadget file, doesn't seem to sign on anymore.

Could you please upgrade the code for GoogleTrans on the nlwiki? The gadget file is

Communication idea

Hi, I made a suggestion in a VPT discussion you were involved in; I wondered if you had any thoughts on that:

what if some developer(s) contributed just a little to the Signpost on a (semi)regular basis describing some of the trials and tribulations of what they're currently developing? One of the big problems in this area is lack of communication. If the community better understood what is involved and how hard it is, that would help, I think. Plus the Signpost has a feedback section - I'm sure you'd get encouragement/praise as well.

I did previously try something in that direction with WP:DEVMEMO, but that didn't work out. Perhaps something smaller and more informal, fitting into an existing process, might work? It is a good idea. I actually regularly wrote the tech section of the signpost in the past myself. Unfortunately I now have a new job, and my Wikipedia time is very limited and I spend a maximum of 6 hours a week on development for MediaWiki. Hello Derk-Jan, How are you ? I expect you are busy in real life, cool. I was thinking at some point in the future, of updating the paragraph in the Origin section of the ISS page, and I was after your help in that matter, you see, I've done a lot of research in the past and I haven't ever heard of a canadian space station, or the Japanese Kibo laboratory being part of a space station program, and the European columbus I'm honestly not too sure about, I've never heard of it being a space station program, but I haven't studied it's origin very much that I can recall, just their current and future plans.

The current paragraph reads like this

According to the plan, the International Space Station programme would combine the proposed space stations of all participant agencies: NASA's Freedom, the RSA's Mir-2 (with DOS-8 later becoming Zvezda), ESA's Columbus, and the Japanese Kibō laboratory.[citation needed] When the first module, Zarya, was launched in 1998, the station was expected to be completed by 2003. Delays have led to a revised estimated completion date of 2011.

The canadians never intended to make their own station, but the Europeans and Japanese sure did. Perhaps not really reliable sources; but: http://www.astronautix.com/craft/colation.htm http://www.russianspaceweb.com/columbus.html but the images there show you that there definetly were concepts. The same for the Japanese space station, but since it is already almost impossible to find references for the current kibo module, those may be harder to find (Japanese don't publish so much and what they publish is often in japanese, not in english). WOW !!! I'm freaking out here, this is amazing ! Those references for the Columbus space station are incredible, and the best lead I have ever seen. They are two of my favorite sites too, so I feel like a complete idiot really. You were right and I was wrong. I have been flat out on the article page lately getting a big push for new material from 15 wikiprojects and I had overlooked your usertalkpage, and now that I'm taking a break I'm just catching up.

Another editor who has been carefully watching some of my messages has updated the lead already, it's still not up to your standards, but it'll do fine for now, I'll immediately research further about the Japanese module's history, so it will be ready to fix up and reference when I'm back. Japanese is a snap for me, all foreign languages are, it's very easy to use google language tools to translate those pages for you. So as we agree it needs references I'll fix the lead first thing when I return. The Japanese embassy on Wikipedia and Nihonjoe have been of great help as well. Penyulap_talk 09:47, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

You are the last one who edited MediaWiki:Sharedupload. When i see it at Special:AllMessages, it is identical to the source - "This file is from $1 and may be used by other projects.". But when go to the actual page, i see #REDIRECT [[MediaWiki:Sharedupload-desc-here]]. Can you explain this?

MediaWiki:Sharedupload is not actually used by the MediaWiki software anymore. Instead MediaWiki:Sharedupload-desc-here and MediaWiki:Sharedupload-desc-there are used instead. Today's code changes

Hello! It appears that one of today's code changes (most likely at Template:Sec link auto) somehow caused external link icons to appear at Template:Wikipedia languages. Yes, an unintended consequence indeed. I'll see if I can fix it, but with the new secure setup, we can't detect in templates anymore if someone is on the secure server and this template has behavior that relies (for styling only) on being able to know that. Script now broken with change from jQuery

I was wondering if you could look into User:The Earwig/afc-helper.js, which in this revision you changed from jQuery to importScript and broke the tool for some of us? The error my console gives is $ is not a function at line 32. I use Firefox 7.0.1 right now. For Chrome 14.0.835.202, I get the error:

Template protected

I noticed you protected Template:Fix/category. It has been vandalised only by IP users so perhaps semi-protection would have been enough. I always feel offended when templates I created get protected, and I myself can't edit them any more. :) Debresser (talk) 22:03, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

All other Fix/ templates are fully protected as well, so that is why I went with that choice. The parent template is used on over 300000 pages (likely significantly more), thus changing this one can have huge effects (both in vandalism exposure but also in putting unnecessary burden on the servers). If you feel it is unwarranted, I ask you to open a discussion at WP:RFPU. If you really are frustrated about not being able to edit the template, I can advise you to try for administrator status, or alternatively campaign for a more tiered permissions system in which we can make a distinction between experienced/trusted editors and those who have been around for a week. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 22:54, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear TheDJ,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. In wiki2jax.js, "\displaystyle" does not need curly braces as it does not take a parameter.

In ext.math.mathjax.enabler.js, the function call to TEX.Parse.Augment() can be removed in its entirety as MathJax 2.0 includes support for specifying the line spacing in newlines.

I assume you have uploaded also the output HTML-CSS jax's STIX font directory. In that case you should include "STIX" as one of the "availableFonts".
1. I'm not sure if this was done yet. We didn't import the fonts because they were 120Mb, but that probably means they are not installed on anything but perhaps brion's machine I presume.
In texvc.js, quick-and-dirty support for color is not needed anymore as MathJax 2.0 includes an extension for the color command. See this diff.
In TeX-AMS-texvc_HTML.js, if you remove the hackish color support from above, you must include "color.js" as one of the preloaded "TeX" extensions since otherwise the \color macro will be interpreted wrongly (MathJax 1.0-style instead of TeX-style). Also, you must include "cancel.js", which will not be loaded automatically.

Ad 2.: The call to TEX.Parse.Augment() was copied over from my sources. I have implemented this back for MathJax version 1.1, which did not include support for newline options. Version 2.0 does, so this hack is not needed anymore.

Ad 3: Only the PNG image font takes that much memory, the STIX fonts is just a package of 2.5 MB. But you are confusing the actual fonts with the support for it, which I'm pretty sure Brian has uploaded (I have omitted them only because of the inconvenience of uploading large numbers of files as a user).

For a few of the missing symbols (if anyone really needs them): diff.

I read up Davide's comments on the user mailing list. If the issue with the code is due to bad timing of the "End Extensions" hook simply select another one. I'm pretty much at loss though why Davide claims the code does not do what it is intended to do. It works in my setup because the AMS extensions are loaded in advance. Simply implement another hook and run the code, then it should also work in your setup (and for IE). Nageh (talk) 22:25, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Symbols

I note that the added symbols have a considerable different style than most math symbols, because they don't get the AMS styling... Would you happen to have any ideas for that ? They look pretty normal to me, and they are supported both by the TeX and the STIX fonts. Can you clarify how the symbols are supposed to look? (Thanks for pointing out the duplicate \digamma, btw.) Nageh (talk) 21:08, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

They are smaller for instance. It's because they get this styling: font-family: STIXGeneral, 'Arial Unicode MS', serif; font-size: 85%; font-style: italic; font-weight: normal;, whereas AMS symbols only get font-family: MathJax_AMS; —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 21:13, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I see what's going on. The problem is that while the symbols are supported in the Math and AMS fonts they are not supported by the MathJax HTML/CSS output jax code. Basically, this means that we need to kindly ask Davide from the MathJax crew to add support for these symbols if we do not want to painfully add the glyph outlines ourselves. MediaWiki:Gadget-popups.js bug

i already reported the issue in User talk:Amalthea#‎Mediawiki:Gadget-popups.js bug, but unfortunately he/she seems a bit too busy and did not have time to look at it yet, so i'm asking you.

the bug itself is very obvious once you look at the code. the issue is that function removeTitle() destroys the value of a.title just before copying it to a.originalTitle, which is clearly wrong - we should copy first and nuke later. this is somewhat important, specifically because of other gadgets (e.g. cat-a-lot) that rely on title - we can train them to use "originalTitle" instead, but only if it actually have the correct value. this bug also screws up the operation of the functions restoreTitle() and removeTooltip(). the fix is very simple.

mathJax update

FYI – Summary of recent updates: diff. Includes improved \oiint and \oiiint support, support for \textsf and \texttt (\emph is a text mode command and should not be supported, IMO), support for \vline (works perfectly in HTML-CSS output mode), noErrors.js extension has been removed (no idea why I had included it in the first place), and support for the RGB color model (so \definecolor does not fail anymore). Due to a change in how we're handling page icons, we're about to start using your Edit Top script as a Gadget on our site, but it looks like our community would prefer that the [edit] link be to the left of any page icons rather than on the outside edge of the page. Is this something you can do easily? I'm certainly willing to look at it myself, but my DOM and Javascript skills are next to nil, so I'd probably struggle with it for some time before getting it.
