Why did you delete my edit on Entropa? I work in the Justus Lipsius building where it is displayed and have been able to take a close look at the work in question. I have made a number of changes to the article, most notably adding sources. I will continue to moniotr the article and encourage you to add any additional material about Dilday and be sure to include reliable and verifiable sources. If you have any questions about formatting, add the source and I will be happy to tweak it as needed. Alansohn (talk) 23:40, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for doing the Al Hall (Athlete) page

Just wanted to thank you for putting together the page on Al Hall back in November. I am his son, Shawn, and was very pleased to see it. I did add in the missing birthdate. I would like to add a photo if that meets with your approval.

Again, thank you.

Halle Berry's Heritage

I wonder if this should be noted about Halle heritage: Her maternal grandmother was English. Also has other English (distantly related to the Baronets Beresford, Viscounts of Tyrone, Earls of Tyrone and Marquesses of Waterford, to Barons Decies and to Baron Beresford, and to the Marquess of Campo-Maior Count of Trancoso in Portugal), Irish, German and remote Dutch ancestry.. I got this info from here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000932/bio Thanks! Neptunekh (talk) 00:51, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

IMDb is problematic because the material can be user-update, just like Wikipedia. Try to find the material in reliable newspapers or magazines to confirm the details you found at IMDb. Alansohn (talk) 01:45, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

A request for a Bob May biography

I know this is a little odd but I know you're really good at creating/expanding biographical articles, especially for folks that have recently died so there's plenty of widely available online sourcing for them. I noticed that nobody has jumped in to expand Bob May (actor), the Lost in Space actor who died this weekend. I'd appreciate it if you could find the time to work up a suitable article for Bob May. It's bound to be just chock full of hook-y facts, perfect for a DYK nomination. Just a thought. - Dravecky (talk) 09:44, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

I will do my best to go through the obis and expand the article. Alansohn (talk) 13:59, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Incorrect Reversion

The change to Asahi Beer is NOT a vandalism. That IS the translation, and there is no point in providing a colloquialism without providing the translation. If there is no translation, the information is useless to non-Japanese speakers. I know it is a strange thing to call a building, but once you see it, you will understand. Check the discussion page of Asahi where I made comments about my edit.

You should not assume something is vandalism when you don't speak the language in question. I will be reverting the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.228.21.40 (talk) 04:27, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Blocked for 24 hours

I've blocked you for 24 hours, per your editing restrictions, for incivility. Your comments towards User:Good Olfactory, at this CFD and other CFDs involving him recently, have crossed the line. You have attacked the nominator rather than just commenting on the nomination, and accused him viscious insensitivity and ignorance. For his part, he has repeatedly asked you to refrain from making personal attacks. Such ad hominem attacks are not civil, fail to assume good faith, and are not acceptable, regardless of how emotionally charged the subject matter may be. Nor is it acceptable to target individuals because you disagree with them; this is not the first time you have done so in CFD, but I hope it will be your last. Please think about how you can contribute to creating a more positive and constructive atmosphere during your block. Postdlf (talk) 21:49, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

This is a pathetic joke. I can count on you to defend one of the sickest trivializations of the Holocaust I have seen in my entire life. Given that I, relatives, and friends have lost family members due to Hitler and the Nazis, it took me quite a great deal of time to write what I did at an appropriate level of discourse. Whether the block is overturned or not, I do plan to pursue sanctions against User:Good Olfactory for his sickening abuse of process in using his friendship with you to facilitate his efforts to silence criticism of one of the grossest violations of basic decency of the world's greatest tragedy that I have ever seen. That you would so readily by into his abuse of process only reflects even more negatively on you. Alansohn (talk) 23:25, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Alansohn, I recently struck out your comments at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2009_January_22#Category:Holocaust_survivors that led to the block and I've explained why underneath. However, judging by the above comments and your challenge to your block, you do not regret these comments and so I have reversed this strike out, as I would guess at this stage that that would be against your wishes. Incidentally, I have no "friendship" with Postdlf; we have had very few interactions on WP in all my time as a user. We happen to both be WP users, and I took my concerns to a person I viewed as an uninvolved administrator. Thanks, Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:14, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

My only regret about my remarks is that I did not take a stronger stance against your offensive remarks. I would strongly suggest that the action that should be taken here is to have your despicably offensive remarks trivializing the suffering of those who endured Nazi persecution outside of concentration camps. Your remarks are so grossly offensive and betray an utter disregard of the horrors of the Holocaust. Your previous trivializations of child molestation were similarly offensive, but your Holocaust remarks are beyond the pale of basic decency and good taste. Refactor your nomination at CfD and remove your shamelessly offensive statements or I will have them deleted. Again, I stand 100% by my stand against your trivialization. Let's hear your stand to justify your Holocaust trivialization. Alansohn (talk) 03:30, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
I had planned on working on a few articles that I'll create offline while this punitive block passes pointlessly away, one of which is for the forthcoming Anti-Nazi Boycott of 1933 article. Rabbi Stephen Samuel Wise one of the boycott's organizers, was asked what the point of the boycott was if it did not stop the Nazis from persecuting Jews. Wise responded that "We must speak out", but "if that is unavailing, at least we shall have spoken." Some 75 years later, after six million Jews were killed by these same Nazis, the least I could possibly do would be to speak out against those who could have the gall to trivialize the experiences of those who lived through the terror of the Hitler era but were not officially admitted into concentration camps, because "any Jew who lived in Europe during the Nazi-era could technically call themself a 'Holocaust survivor'". Any decent person should be repulsed by this characterization. At least I have spoken. Alansohn (talk) 04:54, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Unblock request

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Alansohn (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

The edit that has been used to justify this block, here, revolves around a CfD in which User:Good Olfactory insisted that Holocaust survivors should not be categorized "because any Jew who lived in Europe during the Nazi-era could technically call themself a 'Holocaust survivor'". Given that I, relatives, and friends have lost family members due to Hitler and the Nazis, it took me quite a great deal of time to write what I did at an appropriate level of discourse to address User:Good Olfactory's unacceptable trivializations of the world's greatest tragedy, the deaths of six million Jews and millions of others. I know, have met, read the works of and heard lectures from Holocaust survivors, almost all of whom are still deeply scarred from their experiences, and none feel that they used a "technicality" to call themselves "Holocaust survivors" if they were hunted down like dogs but managed to escape being put in a Nazi concentration camp and near-certain death. I had hoped that after reading my response to his unacceptable wording, that User:Good Olfactory might have realized how the gross insensitivity and callousness in his choice of words -- even if explicit anti-semitism was not the source of his wording -- and refactored his nomination and offered an apology. Instead, User:Good Olfactory's only response was to pursue a block. I would love to hear a justification for his gross insensitivity in wording and for the actions that have been taken as part of this process.

Decline reason:

Without getting into all of this, let's be as simple as possible. You called him ignorant. That's at the very least uncivil and quite possibly a personal attack. Your editing restrictions say that you are to be blocked in any instance of incivility. Your incivility continues in your unblock request, as you continue to accuse him of bad faith and seem to be accusing him of Anti-Semitism, despite the fact that you said you weren't. — Smashvilletalk 00:13, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Fighting a block is pointless when no administrator has the decency to address the offensive remarks made by User:Good Olfactory, ones that he still stands by, despite the clearly insensitive and provocative tone of his statements. As User:Good Olfactory refuses to recast or refactor his remarks or withdraw his CfD, despite the clarifications I have offered. I stand by remarks 100% and my only regret is that I had not taken more forceful action to address his blatant Holocaust trivialization that defames anyone who endured the Nazi era, whether in a concentration camp or not. That admins refuse to address this only adds insult to a rather grievous injury. Alansohn (talk) 01:42, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

If it would help you

Alansohn, if it would help in any way at all with your WP life, you should know that I'm sorry that you were offended by some of my comments at CfD. As I've also told User:Historicist, it hasn't been my intent to offend you or anyone else. I think if you knew me you'd recognise that, but of course it's always relatively easy to be misunderstood in print form. Thanks, ol' buddy. Good Ol’factory (talk) 06:53, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

I appreciated the note, but I was still a bit hot under the collar from dealing with the block you pushed for. I thought I'd wait a day or two to cool off a bit and see what your actions were, which speak louder than words, as always. Waking up this morning to a sockpuppet investigation that couldn't possibly have been successful, filed less than 24 hours after leaving what could pass for an apology, didn't convince me that your words pasted above were sincere. I'm still not sure what it is that you're trying to accomplish, or why you're pushing the admin who found your sockpuppet expedition to be unfounded to find something that isn't there. Since you filed this sockpuppet investigation, I've made a thousand edits, started three or four articles and nominated two or three of them for DYK. I'm more than willing to move on. It's well past time that you did. Alansohn (talk) 02:52, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
I want you to know I am not pushing the admin to "find" anything, nor did I earlier push for a block against you. If my sole goal or purpose was to have you blocked, it would be quite simple for me to just block you for incivility per the restriction. But because in each case I was otherwise involved, it was appropriate for me to seek a neutral appraisal of the appropriateness of the comments that concern me. It's clear the CU was "inconclusive" (leaning more to negative) and I personally take your word on the matter. The CU result combined with your word led me to have considered the issue closed, which then left me scratching my head about the need for the points you set out there (which I feel are more examples of incivility, but I understand you may disagree). Honestly, I would have approached you personally about the issue rather than filing a CU request if I had not felt you were in a state of perpetual attack mode against everything I post on WP. My view is quite simple: regardless of how many or what type of edits anyone does—if the user can't be civil to other editors in comments and disagreements with them, the user's being disruptive. You don't have to agree with me about any substantive content issues at all—you just need to be polite about it and not assume the worst. Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:09, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
Incidentally, Lar just posted a message on his page where he told us to calm down and he mentioned mediation in passing. That's not something I would invite you into, but if you really want to address some sincere concerns you have about me, I would have no problem addressing any issues about myself before a neutral third party. It does little good to "put new wine in old bottles" by bringing up historic concerns every time there is a new disagreement, so if you need to air those concerns to someone, I can agree to be there to present my POV. Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:16, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
If you take a look at CfD, you'll find I agree with you as often as I don't. As someone else I've disagreed with at times said recently, "Sure I said I wouldn't respond to your comments, but I didn't mean that to include when you were wrong" (maybe a slight paraphrase) and I will maintain that same privilege with you, with a good deal more restraint. I will try not to assume the worst, as you have requested, but there also needs to be a bit more balance in a process that's stacked against categories up for discussion. My suggestion to create and improve articles is intended to show that once your articles and categories are targets for deletion, you don't feel the same way deleting the work of others. Try creating an article or two. It's a lot of fun. Mediation only seems to fan the flames. Alansohn (talk) 04:17, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I acknowledge that we do agree on balance probably more often than not—it's just, as you say, they get less notice, don't they? I'm also fine when you or anybody else disagrees with me on the substantive issues; it generally doesn't bother me when a discussion proposal I make "fails", because often I think the discussion brings out some good points that I (and hopefully some others) hadn't thought of before, and often even though the initial proposal isn't carried forward, there's an agreement to rename or something for clarity purposes. So please don't hesitate to disagree just so you won't be disagreeing with me. As long as things don't get personal, I'll have no right of complaint about that.
Funny you should mention it, but I have been creating articles more lately; in fact, one of the of articles I recently started was just deleted via AfD this week. It was a good discussion, and one user there gave me a good idea how to approach the topic with an article of a different name, so it was worthwhile. I've also been doing some categorizing of Oceanic people by previously non-existent first-level administrative country subdivision categories—people from the New Jerseys of the Pacific, as it were.
I'll have to take your word on mediation, since I've never gone that route before. I can imagine it's probably not the best strategy if you're trying to let bygones by bygones.
Anyway, I hope you will accept my apologies for the things I've done to upset you. I'm a bit of a goof-ball, so undoubtedly some things I say in a friendly or good-natured way are interpreted differently by readers. And as I said in the CU thing, I have no problem with saying the vast majority of your editing work I've seen is very good. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:44, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Vandalism controversy

Did you know about the Wiki vandalism discussion that's been advertised in the press? [1] I know from your user page that you have technical ideas related to this. I've added a couple messages suggesting that it would be good to consult anti-vandalism editors (and systems analysts) about how to proceed, rather than putting it to a popular vote right away. I thought you might have your own perspective on the overall discussion. Regards, Piano non troppo (talk) 03:35, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the note and for thinking that I might be helpful. I have thought long and hard about the subject and I appreciate the reminder. Alansohn (talk) 04:17, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

The RickK Anti-Vandalism Barnstar
For being what I see as the best vandal-whacker on the project. Some of the others are faster, and some of them spend longer each day working, but you are the only one that when I see an AIV report, I KNOW that there is no need to spot check your work. You are the only person working the recent changes that I feel safe in trusting your judgment unquestioningly. Thank you very much. Trusilver 04:31, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
I am truly overwhelmed by your description of my work and I can only hope that I have genuinely earned this recognition. While I am sometimes disappointed to "lose" a revert to another editor, I do hope that spending a little more time will result in a more accurate and complete removal of vandalism. Thank you for all of your anti-vandalism work and for this bit of recognition. Alansohn (talk) 05:02, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Sockpuppet investigation

An editor has opened an investigation into sockpuppetry by you. Sockpuppetry is the use of more than one Wikipedia account in a manner that contravenes community policy. The investigation is being held at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Alansohn, where the editor who opened the investigation has presented their evidence. Please make sure you make yourself familiar with the guide to responding to investigations, and then feel free to offer your own evidence or to submit comments that you wish to be considered by the Wikipedia administrator who decides the result of the investigation. If you have been using multiple accounts (in a manner contrary to Wikipedia policy), please go to the investigation page and verify that now. Leniency is usually shown to those who promise not to do so again, or who did so unwittingly, but the abuse of multiple accounts is taken very seriously by the Wikipedia community.

No need for an apology here. Huggle not only has changed my mindset, but it sometimes seems to have a mind of its own. Reverting edits on my talk page

You recently reverted an edit on my talk page made by Ifyouarehere (talk · contribs). Admittedly, this user is practicing vandalism, but his edit to my page was harmless. Why revert that? Just curious. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:26, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

I had seen his repeated vandalism and when I saw the edit it had appeared as vandalism. I tried to undo the revert and warning, but Huggle was unable to do so. This was clearly an error on my part and I had realized about a billionth of a second after I reverted. Thanks for the note and the correction. My apologies Alansohn (talk) 17:29, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Careful when reverting vandalism

Be careful when you revert vandalism, as you recently did on Apollo 11. Make sure you're not just reverting back to another vandalized level. Your anti-vandalism efforts are appreciated, though. TJRC (talk) 17:39, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

When I read the change it appeared as vandalism, and i vacillated after reading it, especially its placement in the lead. In retrospect, I agree that it may have been improperly placed, but was not true vandalism. Thank you for the note and for warning me of what is almost certainly an error on my part. Alansohn (talk) 17:43, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
No, that's not what I'm saying. You were right to revert that edit. However, the version you reverted to was another vandalizing edit. Don't use rollback in a situation like this. Rollback simply reverts all consecutive edits made by a particular editor. In this case, there were two consecutive acts of vandalism, made by two different editors. You rolled back to the first vandal's edit. Only use rollback to get to a good edit. The better tool here is to go into the page's history, and do a diff back to a known good version; and then use undo (not rollback) to revert to that good level. TJRC (talk) 18:42, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Understood. I am still getting accustomed to Huggle features in dealing with situations like this, and will be more careful of such situations in the future. Alansohn (talk) 18:45, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Reliable sourcing

Then at the very least, the sources written by proponents of parapsychology should be removed from the reference list of that article. If we are looking for reliable third party sources, an article written by a parapsychologist can't be trusted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bloody21 (talkcontribs) 17:47, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

In many cases, articles would be better if they weren't edited by proponents (or opponents) of the article's subject. However, as long as there is no direct conflict of interest, Wikipedia policy allows everyone to edit almost every article. Issues of content and balance, as well as concerns of conflict of interest, should be discussed at the article's talk page. Material should not be removed before discussion in an article of this nature. Alansohn (talk) 17:51, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
I guess I should probably learn my lesson after seeing this edit, in which User:Bloody21 changed the article for Fecal Matter (band) to read "see Feces. Oh, and Alansohn is a purveyor of pseudoscience for not stating blatantly that it is one in the parapsychology article." Alansohn (talk) 01:00, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

I know you're more of a biography writer but if wanted a short break from the recently deceased I bet you could take the tiny, newly-created stub article about Bacon Explosion and craft an interesting article out of it, more than suitable for DYK. Panarican

I came across this page just now and I noticed that another user suggested deleting it. I "blanked" the page as the bot told me but this does not seem to delete the article. Then, your auto-response system told me I "vandalized." There was no vandalism, just and attempt to delete a page. I read the criteria for deletion, and this article *more* than qualifies. Longevity articles

Hi Alansohn,

The trouble at the WOP project continues. One editor has taken it upon himself to make drastic changes to longevity-related articles (like these [3] [4] [5] [6]), and pushing to delete lists of the oldest people by country, even though this same user was previously arguing to delete biographies because "the information would be better on a list". If you have any time to look over this, it would be appreciated. Thanks! -- Ollie231213 (talk) 16:45, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Kindly don't misrepresent my efforts to consolidate overlapping lists into a few manageable ones. Your post here could be seen as canvassing. Legacypac (talk) 07:47, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
Legacypac, per WP:Canvassing, "An editor who may wish to draw a wider range of informed, but uninvolved, editors to a discussion can place a message at any of the following:... On the user talk pages of concerned editors. Examples include: Editors who have made substantial edits to the topic or article; Editors who have participated in previous discussions on the same topic (or closely related topics)". I don't see that there is any issue here. Can you point to any aspect of WP:CANVAS that would be relevant? Alansohn (talk) 13:33, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

It's called Campaigning on WP:Canvassing and it needs to stop. Legacypac (talk) 13:40, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Legacypac, per Wikipedia:Canvassing#Campaigning, do you really believe that the editor is trying to sway me through this message left here? Not a chance. Alansohn (talk) 13:57, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

He seems to be trying to sway a decision elsewhere. Please reread. Legacypac (talk) 14:01, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Legacypac, (a) there is neither canvassing nor campaigning; this was a single note to another editor with a shared interest. (b) were you the target of EEng's classic personal attack "Can you fucking learn to indent your post like everyone else"? Alansohn (talk) 14:15, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
Yes, Legacypac, please fucking learn to indent your posts like everybody else, because Alansohn loves a red herring. EEng (talk) 15:20, 15 December 2015 (UTC)This editor has made few or no other edits outside this topic.
Ah, now the gang's all here. EEng, there's something -- is it hilarious, or perhaps ironic -- in an editor making three dozen edits in the past two weeks to WT:CIVILITY who is one of Wikipedia's most uncivil editors, while his chief collaborator recapitulates the exact instance of one of the most pathetic personal attacks by said editor on the critical subject of... indentation? The irony is delicious. I'm sure that you'll provide further hilarity by making additional uncivil personal attacks while refactoring other editor's edits and classifying those improperly as personal attacks. Maybe you'll edit war over a personal attack that labels an editor with more than 2,000 edits as an SPA. At least you're keeping your sense of humor about this. Alansohn (talk) 15:45, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
{{spas}} refers not to a "sockpuppet account", but a "single-purpose account". Ollie certainly is the latter, and his large number of edits, all in a single topic area, only reinforces that as it grows larger. Such editors are routinely so labeled in AfDs and other discussions, as you know. Thanks for the opportunity to clear up this confusion. EEng (talk) 16:15, 15 December 2015 (UTC)This editor has made few or no other edits outside this topic.
Thanks, {{spas}} amply applies to you and your single purpose edits; it seems a poor match for poor old Ollie, who has been mislabeled repeatedly by you, despite his thousands of edits in a broad range of areas. Alansohn (talk) 16:21, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
Hahahahahahaha! It's good to see you're keeping your sense of humor as well. But now that everyone's clear on what's going on, I'm afraid I must bring this charming tête-à-tête to a close. 17:14, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
I am so sorry - I got turned around. Ollie was not canvassing across talk pages Alansohn was responsible for this:

Legacypac, I really suggest you not worry about it. Let Alansohn alone to carry on as he pleases. This has happened before, and everyone knows what's going on. EEng (talk) 18:35, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
Legacypac, per Wikipedia:Canvassing#Appropriate_notification, "The audience must not be selected on the basis of their opinions—for example, if notices are sent to editors who previously supported deleting an article, then identical notices should be sent to those who supported keeping it." Notice was sent to you and every other participant in the previous AfD. The only person I did not notify who had participated at the previous iteration was someone who voted for retention but who is in the middle of a lengthy block right now. If you believe that there is any aspect of policy that I didn't comply with, go to WP:ANI, go directly to ANI. Thanks to Kudpung for closing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ashley Golebiewski (3rd nomination) appropriately as "keep" and hopefully this forestalls AfD 4 for this article. EEng / Legacypac, maybe for our next collaboration we could work with Ollie and improve some of his soccer articles. Alansohn (talk) 18:44, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Saturday January 16: Wikipedia Day NYC 2016

You are invited to join us at New York University for Wikipedia Day NYC 2016, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of Wikipedia 15, the project's global 15th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

10:00am - 7:00 pm at NYU ITP Tisch School of the Arts, 721 Broadway (between Waverly and Washington Place)

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 17:56, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Hangover Park edit

I just removed a vanity entry from the HPHS (as opposed to HP! article. You removed awhile back but someone reinserted it. Check out my 'gone-native' entry on the Talk page. I think you'll get a kick out of it. Your handle indicates you may know some Deutsch. Are you an HPHS alum? If so, are you old enough to have studied German w/ Herr Barthel? I stay anonymous here @ WP and ask others to do so.

Pleas note--I went out of turn for a reason. Either the script in the message below, or possible something that happened with your very recent archiving caused my attempts to edit the page at the bottom to show up in the blue message box no matter how many spaces below the entry I tried to put it. I'm also going to contact the creators of the message. Regards Tapered (talk) 05:19, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Thankyou again

Hi Alansohn,

Thank you for your statement at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement#930310. My topic ban was enacted totally unjustly. You have seen the trouble the EEng and LegacyPac (among others) are causing and I firmly believe it is them who are acting against Wikipedia policy, not me and 930310. I would certainly support "boomerang nominations" and will be appealing my own topic ban. -- Ollie231213 (talk) 21:57, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Sockpuppet investigation

Hi.

Legacypac (talk) 22:58, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Legacypac, you just gotta cool it. This is getting ridiculous. Alansohn may be a [redacted] and a [redacted], and sometimes I find him [redacted], but there's no reason to think he's sockpuppeting. EEng (talk) 02:33, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

Nomination of Green Party of New Jersey for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Green Party of New Jersey is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Green Party of New Jersey until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Me-123567-Me (talk) 04:45, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Please reconsider your redaction...

on the recent longevity afd. In my view, it is not a personal attack to make note of the likelihood that an SPA is, in fact, a topic-banned editor, given the context. The comment and edit history match the recurring pattern of sanction-evading editors in this topic area. I was a party to the initial ArbCom case. The off-wiki coordination of GRG and 110 Club partisans is a matter of record. This was, and remains, their S.O.P.
Thanks.
David in DC (talk) 21:37, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

  • David in DC, there is a mechanism to report sockpuppets and this mechanism is not being used. No evidence is offered to support the claim and this comes off as just another effort to provoke an editor, not unlike the repeated SPA attacks that have been made by the same editor in the recent past. If you have the evidence to back up this claim, feel free to file a checkuser. Otherwise it's just a run-of-the-mill unsupported personal attack of the kind that gets blocks for people in the Longevity area broadly construed. Legacypac appears to have a tactic to endlessly repeat the same rejected arguments and provoke editors into falling into the trap of making a response that triggers yet another request for enforcement action, using an attrition tactic to eliminate other editors, and to my eye this appears to be at work here yet again. What needs to be done in these mass AfDs is to have editors make their best case the first time and have admins consider the arguments, wherever they come from. Alansohn (talk) 21:51, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Alansohn - please do not play fast and loose with the truth. I only participated in one ArbComm enforcement and started one. Both included diffs that were quite removed from my edits. Kindly stop with the personal attacks and casting asparations. Legacypac (talk) 05:05, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Legacypac, you have been a consistent disruptive force across Wikipedia, particularly in Longevity related articles. Your consistent harassment, mindless repetition of arguments and personal attacks are the major factor behind this disruption. Your characterizations of editors including 7&6=thirteen and Ollie231213 as single-purpose accounts were and remain inaccurate provocations. Your opening of Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Alansohn, which was closed as utterly baseless about as soon it was opened, is a shameless abuse of process. It's well past time for you start learning how to behave. Alansohn (talk) 05:14, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Re:Removal of content at Oakcrest High School

It was not an accident. If you look at my past editing history I have been making this format to every high school (public or non-public) as I go for the past few years. It's not really necessary to have it in the infobox. The reader should be aware of the level of education a school is mostly based on the first sentence and title of article. So when "Type" is put in the infobox it merely means what KIND of school the facility is. Not it's level of education. Banan14kab (talk) 07:56, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Topic ban

Just to let you know, my topic ban appeal failed... [7] No one actually refuted the arguments I put forward, but instead put their fingers in their ears and continued to spout out the usual prejudiced bullshit. It's no wonder that Wikipedia has the reputation it does when cretins like these are charge... It's ASTOUNDING that these people have no understanding of the concept that different sources can be more reliable than others in certain situations. Currently the List of oldest living people article is an original research list, and implies that Masamitsu Yoshida is the world's oldest man... but no outside source reports this. Do Wikipedia editors now decide who the world's oldest people are? God forbid I might suggest that the list should be based on the most reliable, authoritative source, so that we don't get fraudulent age claimants mixed in... Oh but no, that's "POV-pushing" and "advocating for the GRG". Just say the word "GRG" and most editors seem to have a fit. The result of my appeal was effectively decided before I even started. And what kind of judicial system is this? Just anyone can turn up when they want, meaning a very biased set of opinions were put forward. What a joke. -- Ollie231213 (talk) 22:50, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

  • Ollie, you know that I've fought for this issue in synch with your goals and objectives. I have been severely limited in the time and effort I could devote to his issue over the past several weeks, but as I ramp up I will continue to ensure that the efforts to combat bias and abuse of process will continue. Alansohn (talk) 00:16, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
I know, I appreciate it. Thankyou. -- Ollie231213 (talk) 16:47, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
P.S. I'm banned but Legacypac is not... despite subverting proper deletion processes ([8] [9] [10]), using WP:IDONTLIKEIT to argue that longevity is not noteworthy, and saying that the claim of Methuselah (supposedly 969 years old) is "more reliable than most claims to living 120 years recently." This guy gets away with violating Wiki policy and POV-pushing, but I'm banned for resisting it and fighting anti-scientific, anti-age validation bias? Pathetic. -- Ollie231213 (talk) 17:30, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
Also, I asked him why he made these edits while logged out (it's almost certainly him as the IP traces to British Columbia and he has done the same kind of thing before... But he keeps reverting my edit on his talk page and refuses to answer. -- Ollie231213 (talk) 17:55, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
Alansohn you are encouraging a topic banned user who continues to discuss the topic they should not discuss. In addition you are an uncivil often wrong editor whp likes to level unsubstantiated allegations. You are encouraged to leave me alone. Ollie - topic banned means topic banned, not "discuss the topic, try to get others to do things for you on the topic, and attack other editors in other places". I answered you by taking your nonsense off my talk page multiple times. Go edit another area and leave me alone. Legacypac (talk) 21:50, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
Oh, but it was clearly substantiated "nonsense" wasn't it? I was just asking why you were editing while logged out. There was evidence to suggest it was you. But you didn't answer, just deleted my comment. Oh, and what exactly was I trying to get Alansohn to do? I didn't ask him to do anything. I'm discussing the topic-ban itself, not longevity as a topic. -- Ollie231213 (talk) 23:48, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
Ollie231213, to be clear, the part of your statement above that says, Currently the List of oldest living people article is an original research list, and implies that Masamitsu Yoshida is the world's oldest man... but no outside source reports this. is a statement not about your topic ban but about the topic you are banned from discussing. 99.236.126.9 (talk) 00:19, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Connecticut Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by Denmark MPJ-DK (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), and New South Wales Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by There's always time for skeletons Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with Lancashire J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Old mistake?

Here and on another page, you listed the birthplace of Ronald Naldi, complete with a quote from the source (a New York Times article). However, this source doesn't seem to mention Naldi at all. I checked the wayback machine, and even the version of that article when you made that edit doesn't mention him, nor does the quoted phrase appear anywhere on the internet outside of Wikipedia mirrors, so far as I can tell. Warning

If you persist in making edits like these, I will block you from editing. Be wp:civil or be gone. Rklawton (talk) 13:44, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Rklawton, deal with the stalker, not the one pointing out the problem from the stalker. But anyways, thanks for the threat. I'm really, really scared. Alansohn (talk) 14:02, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
You were warned. Next time it's a block. Rklawton (talk) 16:55, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
Rklawton, and your warning doesn't impress me. P.S. Use an extra indent to show that your response is to a previous comment. Alansohn (talk) 22:41, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Please stop

Sarcasm is no more appreciated than your racism and vulgarities. Please leave me alone, stop stalking me. Jacona (talk) 19:49, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

JaconaFrere, notice that I don't follow you from article to article. I have never -- not once, at any time -- edited an article that you have edited that I never edited before. Please get lost and harass someone else; I've had enough of your bullshit in general and your false claims of racism. Please get off my fucking back once and for all. Alansohn (talk) 20:17, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
This is the last time I will post here, unless required by Wikipedia policy. I have never followed you from article to article, and if you look at all of my edits, you can easily see I have not. If editing an article you have previously edited for the first time is harassment, articles would only be edited by the creator, but as you well know, Wikipedia does not work that way. I believe that you've edited almost every New Jersey school and location article, so using your definition, you claim anyone else who edits anything about New Jersey is harassing you. If your accusations were at all true, I'm sure you would know exactly how to take it to the authorities. Nobody would buy it, because it's silly. I plan to continue to edit New Jersey articles from time to time, not to trespass on what you seem to feel is your personal territory, but to improve the encyclopedia. For many of these articles, my next edit will be my first. I hope you will not view this as an attempt to challenge your authority, but to improve the articles. If so we can both improve the encyclopedia. If you continue to make personal attacks, use vulgarities, racial epithets, ignore consensus, etc., I will have an issue with that. You are a talented editor, and in one of the few times I have commented on a discussion at a noticeboard, I defended you when they were considering a block. In spite of your bullying, I believe you do some good work, and I hope you can leave your animosity behind and stop the personal attacks. Jacona (talk) 20:43, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
Take a look at the edit history of the article Cooper Union. I edited the article, which I had edited before. You then edited the article, less than three hours later. Page history statistics show that you never edited the article before. Cooper Union is located in New York. It's not in New Jersey. This has nothing to do with a high school. It seems to be rather shameless stalking. Whether you mean it or not, my perception is that you've been harassing me. This needs to end, not just the stalking, but the perception thereof.
You too have made productive edits that improve articles, and I've thanked you for it on several occasions, as a show of good faith on my part. I am more than happy to find a way to work together, but it takes two. Try to find a way to show some good faith here and it will be reciprocated. Alansohn (talk) 20:54, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi Alansohn, hope you are well! I added a cat. to this NJ-related article a while back and have been watching it. It has been tagged for 9 years as needing verification. I've looked and found perhaps one reliable source, here. As written it seems to be little more than urban legend with links to original research. Do you think there is anything here worth saving? I am considering PROD'ing it but wanted to ask what you think first. Regards, Accurizer (talk) 02:38, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Accurizer, I agree about the issue. It doesn't appear to merit a standalone article. I say that the little verifiable content should be merged into the West Milford, New Jersey article and NCV turned into a redirect. Any thoughts? Alansohn (talk) 04:50, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Sounds like a good solution to me. Thanks for your input! Regards, Accurizer (talk) 22:05, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

I completed a merger. Feel free to hack away at it! Regards, Accurizer (talk) 23:16, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Do you have an opinion about this recently prodded article about a classic drive-in in Wall Township? I note that it shows up in assorted books about Jersey food landmarks, but your thoughts would be appreciated. Best,--Arxiloxos (talk) 23:41, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

County Inter-Census updates

Alansohn, I think a favorable precedent has been set in the county infoboxes with your changes on the Burlington County, New Jersey article. Feel free (obviously) to update the other New Jersey counties as such. I would encourage favoring the QuickFacts ref only to facilitate updates in successive years at points where the reader only needs the most current estimate as well as the 2010 estimate, rather than all intervening years' data, given that the QuickFacts citation automatically updates itself yearly, minimizing the editwork. Thanks again, Castncoot (talk) 22:08, 27 March 2016 (UTC)
I've updated Atlantic and Burlington and will work my way through. I have been using both the QuickFacts and the 2015 Census links, recognizing that the same small changes needed to update the links also need to be applied to the data in the text. Do look at the California county articles, which use the Infobox settlement, which is far more robust than the county Infobox used in New Jersey and in the New York and Connecticut articles you've updated. Alansohn (talk) 22:35, 27 March 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I had noticed that the Infobox settlement template had been used for the California articles. Just as a follow up, I've changed over all of the NJ counties using your general format, with the exception that I've used only QuickFacts as the infobox citation. If you feel strongly, by all means, go ahead and add the American FactFinder [11] citation as well, I certainly won't take offense! Best, Castncoot (talk) 23:35, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Confusing 3RR case

See Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring#User:Beyond My Ken reported by User:Alansohn (Result: ) which you filed. I was about to go ahead with a closure, but don't understand how it happens that you are filing the complaint. If you don't mind, can you tell me how this dispute came to your attention? You do not seem to have played a role in any of the article content. You don't seem to have edited the article or the talk page. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 20:11, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

EdJohnston, it's an article that I've edited a numbers of times in the past that remains on my Watchlist. After seeing a first wave of edit warring and assuming it stopped, and then a second wave of edit warring the next day with edit summaries like "The fucking fact that these fucking facts are *sourced*, are about the Clooisters, and cannot be removed without consensus" -- all within a 24 hour span -- it seemed like it might be appropriate to end the matter once and for all. Alansohn (talk) 20:18, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

What's so fun about backwards and repetitive?

I thought I did some fine work that you undid here. Time naturally flows forward, and years typically come before the thing they describe. In a section called "Government", "government" is implied in subsections. Highways and roads are part of public transportation, but distinct from public transit. Anyway, keep it if you'd like, but it seems the wrong thing to do. InedibleHulk (talk) 21:43, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

I was looking at the edits and used an old version. While I do agree that we tend to see time flowing forward, the 2010 data is the most current, with the 2000 information as a backup, hence the order. Alansohn (talk) 21:46, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Reasonable enough. "Census 2010" is terrible, any way you slice it. I'll revert that much, leave the rest to you (and the rest of them). InedibleHulk (talk) 21:57, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
As much as I hate it too, the United States Census Bureau uses "Census 2010" pretty consistently, using it as a proper noun. Alansohn (talk) 22:04, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Are you attempting a mind trick, or is that a typo? Mind tricks don't work on Macs; I see "2010 Census". Whether you want to go with proper nouns is something only you can decide, but there shall be no fooling readers into the wrong way around. InedibleHulk (talk) 23:38, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

Naming of New Jersey Towns

Serious question about New Jersey naming on Wikipedia. Does the MOS explicitly say that the artcile for a town has to be "xxx township", instead of just "xxx" town. Winterysteppe (talk) 17:11, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

Alansohn Ah a very good explanation. It would seem good that the standards are relaxed as you said although it 100% does not affect the pages at all. Linaclotide

Hi @Alansohn: A Talk page discussion has been initiated at linaclotide regarding the proposed text for this article. I would welcome any input. I politely contend to you that removal of this content is consistent with WP:MEDRS policy. FeatherPluma (talk) 19:19, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi @Alansohn: The Talk page discussion is updated. There is a detailed explanation. WP:AGF, I am guessing that perhaps you are a bit unfamiliar with WP:MEDRS, or with its underlying reasoning and implications, or thought it did not apply, or for some reason missed the rationale in my edit summary, here, and on the Talk page. I making this guess because it would account for how you approached things. Of course, there may be some other issue that I am missing. When you have a moment, please comment further about the content in question. Thanks. FeatherPluma (talk) 22:39, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. I'm back editing after a few days offline and I will check out the discussion when I can. Alansohn (talk) 03:34, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello

I wanted to say Hello. I am also interested in working on NJ pages.

Wasickta (talk) 18:42, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

I am new to this Wikipedia stuff. Trying to figure out if it is possible to change the article Society Hill, Middlesex County, New Jersey to be Society Hill, Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. With the current way the article is indexed, it doesn't appear on google searches. Wasickta (talk) 18:54, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
Wasickta, the Wikipedia standard to name articles for places is "placename, state". If there are more than one place with the same name, it would be "place name, county, state", as was done here. Alansohn (talk) 18:58, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
So there is no way to have the word Piscataway be in the heading? Hmmm... most people would usually google "Society Hill Piscataway" and will never see this article. Shame Wasickta (talk) 19:08, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
Hey Alan, sorry to bother you. See this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_Hill,_Philadelphia. Is it possible for us to make it Society_Hill,_Piscataway? That seems more appropriate for indexing. Thanks ahead of time. Wasickta (talk) 21:10, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
The model for Society Hill, Philadelphia is only done in big cities, the kind that are known on a first name basis. I'm restoring the source at the RFHHS page, which comes from a newspaper. The website is used as host for copies of the paper. Alansohn (talk) 21:23, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
1) http://www1.gmnews.com/2004/10/13/officials-say-schools-not-affected-by-scare/ This might be a better source. The link was an archived article of a self-published newspaper. Will leave it up to your discretion. 2) How big of a city does it have to be for it to be used in that way? There are multiple Society Hills in NJ and most people know them by the city they are in(i.e Newark, Piscataway, Cherry Hill). I don't know how good of an indexing mechanism it would be to use counties when most people in our state use the city name. Wasickta (talk) 19:23, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Conflict of Interest

Considering your role in Teaneck politics and in NJ politics - you should really not be editing NJ articles.

Information icon Hello, Alansohn. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your circle, your organization, its competitors, projects or products;
  • instead propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you.

Information icon This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wasickta (talkcontribs) 20:28, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Wasickta (talk) 20:09, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

discussion?

Hi Alansohn. That COIN case went a bit sideways, but I just wanted to ask if given your RW role, which as I understand does have some power and accountabilty, you have thought through COI issues in Wikipedia? I know you have been around a long time, but we've been working on refining COI management. Just really quickly - managing COI has two steps - disclosure of the COI (ideally on your userpage) and then when you want to edit some topic where your COI is "active", proposing edits on the Talk page for others to review and implement, instead of editing directly. Doing those steps protects the integrity of Wikipedia as well as editors with a COI - defining the COI clearly lets others know where the boundaries are, and not editing directly within the boundary protects the editor from scandal. Happy to discuss any of that if you like. Best regards Jytdog (talk) 01:26, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

As I understand it, Alansohn has a role in local politics involving the city he lives in. I don't see that involves a conflict-of-interest that would mean avoiding any article that touches on the subject of the state of New Jersey. Every resident of the state has an opinion about state politics because we are affected by them, do we all have a conflict-of-interest?
I can see asking, not demanding, that Alansohn not edit articles involving the city where he has an official role, that this request could be justified but it's ridiculous to demand he stay away from articles on the entire state, especially given the enormous contributions he has made on Wikipedia. Every editor comes to Wikipedia with opinions and judgments but we all strive to maintain a neutral point of view and I think every editor should be allowed the benefit of the doubt, without lobbing accusations around. Liz Read! Talk! 01:54, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
Jytdog and Liz, I agree that there is a potential conflict of interest regarding aspects of one particular article. Over the past two years where this would be an issue, I have tried to avoid editing the article, certainly avoiding any aspect of editing of a political nature. It's also important to recognize that the article under discussion isn't about me, but about a place. Jytdog's suggestions are certainly appropriate and will be reflected in future action on my part, but I don't see the scope expanding beyond this one article. Any further thoughts will be appreciated. Alansohn (talk) 02:26, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

The thing that was alarming to me was Alansohn's brazenness in editing articles that showed clear conflicts of interest and will influence political outcome of this Thursdays election.

The reason why I requested an NJ topic ban is because Alan Sohn can(and is) shaping the profile pages of people that he has affiliation with or are endorsing him. He is using hidden influence in both shaping public perception of his political friends in the state and his adversaries. Wasickta (talk) 02:18, 4 May 2016 (UTC) Wasickta (talk) 02:18, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

Wasickta, you've done more than enough damage for one day. Present your evidence elsewhere and stay off this talk page. Alansohn (talk) 02:26, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

If they don't care of this, I will take it to Asbury Park Press- don't worry. Wasickta (talk) 02:27, 4 May 2016 (UTC) Wasickta (talk) 02:27, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

The threat is offensive, but please make sure that the APP spells my name correctly. Further such attacks, failures to respect my talk page and real world threats will be a sure path to a lengthy block. Alansohn (talk) 02:31, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
To be clear here, what I wrote is what I wrote. Alan thanks for replying. In my view you should declare your COI on your userpage, and not directly edit the article about that town but rather offer changes on the Talk page (there should be no "try" about it). Wasickta has not brought diffs and I haven't dug in and looked myself, but for your own sake - and the sake of Wikipedia's reputation - if there is anything that would have bad "optics" along the lines of what Wasickta is saying with regard to specific people or ethnic voting blocs, you best keep in mind that whole WP:Wikipedia is in the real world thing. Again, for your sake and the sake of Wikipdia's reputation. (if you unaware of how bad this can get, there was editor for BP (the oil company) who scrupulously minded the COI guideline - disclosed his COI in his username, never made a direct edit, but his work here still created a big scandal. That got caught up in some nasty wiki-politics where one faction was shovelling his proposed edits into the article and others were trying to keep them out and the press got wind of a "BP editing its own article" story (Salon, HuffPo, Motherboard - that tier of things) and it just got ugly. And the guy did nothing wrong. So just please be mindful and please don't directly edit content directly where you have RW COI issues. If you do the right thing and people get upset you can say at least "I did the right thing under the COI guideline" and have that going for you, instead of being pure "hand in the cookie jar". Jytdog (talk) 02:55, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
Wasickta's claims have been removed and I never saw them. I wouldn't mind a copy, so that I can at least figure out what he's -- and by extension you are -- alleging. I'm more than mindful of your suggestions, as I've indicated previously, and will take them into account in any future editing. Alansohn (talk) 03:04, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
I didn't see them either; I have asked them to post actual difs at COIN. I am reacting to what he wrote here. But I am not trying to make this about accusations. You apparently (?) got into actual government about 2 years ago and you have been a Wikipedian way longer than that. I just don't know that you ever really paused and thought through how that RW change should (?) or should not change what you do here. I thought about this kind of stuff for the last 15 years at work, so when I came here, avoiding editing where I had a COI was second nature to me, and I have a COI declaration clear as day on my user page. Anyway, I don't want to beat a horse and you will do as you will. I am here live or by email if you want to bounce stuff off me. In the meantime we can await diffs from the W. Jytdog (talk) 03:19, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
I'm still unclear as to the claims, but I fail to see what he even could be referring to. I have considered the issue, perhaps not in as much detail as I will now, but I will reflect your input. Alansohn (talk) 03:32, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

"Aid and abet"

Kindly provide evidence that I am attempting to aid and abet a policy violation, rather than attempting to enforce the WP:OUTING policy against abuse. You will observe that WP:WIAPA specifically prohibits "accusations about personal behavior that lack evidence". Per the firm statement at WP:NPA, Derogatory comments about other editors may be removed by any editor, I have removed said derogatory comments; if you repeat derogatory comments and continuing making accusations about personal behavior that lack evidence, a block will be sought. Nyttend (talk) 04:26, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

  • You point to an obscure edit a decade ago as an excuse to justify outing, and in so doing you are aiding and abetting this abuse. Thanks for the help. Alansohn (talk) 04:36, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
Please don't make drama Alansohn, as tempting as it may be. Thanks. Jytdog (talk) 04:52, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
Create drama?!?! I've been outed and multiple editors draw attention to an innocent edit from a decade ago; you included. Time for you to get off my talk page and get lost. Alansohn (talk) 04:54, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
I know this can be hard. Believe me I have had people all over me about COI matters - wrongly. But writing stuff like you did at COIN and like this (in an edit note even) is really unhelpful all around and is starting to make you look bad. If it turns out that W has no case and is just trying to win a content dispute by crying COI he'll get at least warned. If it turns out you've been directly editing articles without declaring a COI, instead of declaring and offering suggestions on the Talk page, well that will be a learning experience for you and everybody can move on. But drama helps nothing. Please just bide. Am off to bed now. Jytdog (talk) 05:04, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

Hillsdale

Why do you keep deleting my section on the park/recreational section? I am adding great information about the league and Memorial history, as I actually live here. Please do not delete it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kyrooo1234 (talkcontribs) 17:17, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

The biggest question should be "is the material encyclopedic?" Should an encyclopedia contain details about a short-term sports league or the commissioner of a recreational basketball league? I say no and the lack of reliable and verifiable sources only aggravates the issue. Alansohn (talk) 17:23, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

In my opinion it is encyclopedic. Most people that are going to be visiting the Hillsdale, NJ Wikipedia page are going to be from Hillsdale and I feel like it would be informative to them. Why shouldn't an encyclopedia contain information about commissioners of a league? It's interesting and represents the history of the town. I actually live in Hillsdale and anyone in Hillsdale can back me on the information I posted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kyrooo1234 (talkcontribs) 17:42, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not intended to be a repository of inside information for locals. The complete absence of newspaper and magazine articles needed to support the claims only adds to the problem that the material is not encyclopedic. Alansohn (talk) 17:59, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Never said it was supposed to be a repository for inside information for locals. However, while I did say it would be cool for locals to see this information, it is informative as well. How would it even be possible to find newspapers or articles on it? Regardless, it is factual information that serves a good purpose. Go to other towns (not just in New Jersey) and there's information not exact, but similar as to what I have. What's so bad about it being on the page? Nothing really. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kyrooo1234 (talkcontribs) 18:06, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Material on Wikipedia needs to be verifiable and based on reliable sources. Without the ability to confirm information, anyone could add anything. That's what you've done and that's why it doesn't belong here. If it wasn't covered anywhere, why should it be in an encyclopedia? Check the links on verifiability and sourcing to see if this information meets the standard. Alansohn (talk) 19:33, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Jamie Metzl

Stumbled on this article via a search about Russian emigré artists, on to pages that were rapidly re-initiated after initial purging, on to this etc. Thank you for correctly adding back that he has served on the HIAS board. The reference you added makes it easy enough to find, which the original referencing did not, even though the new reference is a popup subpage without it's own URL, and a current search using the HIAS search tool is unrevealing. The person you've been adding isn't notable. Without an article that shows that the person is notable and a reliable and verifiable source connecting the peron to Belleville, the entry will be removed. Alansohn (talk) 13:46, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Well Mister Alansohn, apparently you are not nor have you ever been a resident of Belleville, otherwise you would know the aforementioned notable person. How do you suggest I go about verifying his connection to Belleville? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Concerned belleville resident (talkcontribs) 14:08, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Look at our policies on notability, verifiability and reliable sources. If there are articles in newspapers and magazines that are about this individual, with a claim of notability. It might be possible to create an article about this person. Once the article is created and meets standards, and as long as there are reliable sources to connect this individual to Belleville, you're all set. Alansohn (talk) 14:14, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Well Alansohn, thank you for the clarification. I'll be sure to gather the necessary documents. Hopefully we don't run into any further issues. Have a great day, sir. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Concerned belleville resident (talkcontribs) 14:18, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi Alan,

Some of his colleagues actually gave him the rhyming nickname "Curmudgeon From Metuchen", but alas it never got published. If I ever find a better source, I'll be sure to add it. Till then, we could add {{better source|date=May 2016}} if you prefer? —Patrug (talk) 05:25, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Question about Becton Regional High School Deletion

I have a few questions after the deletion of my edit regarding the high school. I really am a graduate, I do work as the evening traffic reporter on WCBS (AM) and I wonder how do I add this info without it being deleted? Maybe I'm not that significant, even though there's only one listing for alums from the school... the guitarist for a Brazilian metal band. I'm sure you'll cite paragraph two, subsection four, addendum six about this.

Also, how could it be that you deleted it in less than an hour of my posting it? How does that work? Do you watch what anyone posts on any high school in New Jersey and examine it within an hour? How about elementary schools, middle schools, colleges and universities? Does a bell ring or a buzzer sound? Again, less than an hour and it was gone from a page that few people look at much and nobody has contributed to since December of last year.

I'm sure you'll think you're totally correct, quoting your knowledge of all things Wikipedia, all those terms and lingo that looks like Greek to the rest of us. I guess I feel like I was caught jaywalking and an overzealous policeman is there to give me a ticket by the time I get to the sidewalk. I suppose you'll say I have to have some publication I could quote that has my name and position in it... or that the Brazilian guitarist's band has its own Wikipedia page. But that leaves Becton Regional with only one notable alum after decades of turning out students. I wonder what's worse, your looking the other way when you see a post on a high school's webpage that doesn't quite fit the Wikipedia rule book, or the school has only one notable alum? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Steve1reg (talkcontribs)

I assume you're referring to this edit. I've edited the article for Henry P. Becton Regional High School in the past, and the article is on my "Watchlist". When articles on my watchlist are edited, I see the edits and (more often than not) I'll check out the edit to see if it's valid. Sometimes it can be hours or days after the edit, but it can be within minutes.
In terms of the added entry, people listed as alumni must be notable, with their own independent article backed up with reliable and verifiable sources such as books, magazines or newspaper articles about the person.
If you know of any other notable alumni from Becton, the entries could be (and should be) added to the article. Alansohn (talk) 00:35, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Sunday June 5, 12-5pm: Women in Jewish History Edit-a-thon

Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives.

A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Make edits! Ask questions! Be bold!

Time: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Location: Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues), New York City, New York 10011

Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 15:01, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Trenton, New Jersey

The article Trenton, New Jersey you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Trenton, New Jersey for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Sainsf -- Sainsf (talk) 07:21, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

My mistake - my apologies. BMK (talk) 18:39, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Normally, you are banned from my talk page unless required to do so by Wikipedia policy. Regardless, thanks for the note. If it were me, I would have apologized more profusely for changing his first name to "Bod". Alansohn (talk) 18:57, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Actually, it said "Bod" before I edited it: [12]. Sorry about the ban, I forgot about it. BMK (talk) 19:54, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
It's amazing what can happen when you communicate civilly. Alansohn (talk) 19:55, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Manhasset, New York, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bob Elliott. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

June 2016 Guild of Copy Editors Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2016 News

Hello everyone, welcome to the June 2016 GOCE newsletter. It's been a few months since we sent one out; we hope y'all haven't forgotten about the Guild! Your coordinators have been busy behind the scenes as usual, though real life has a habit of reducing our personal wiki-time. The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes!

May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography.

Coordinator elections: It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. Voting takes place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. If you'd like to assist behind the scenes, please consider stepping forward; self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; remember it's your Guild, and it doesn't run itself!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Miniapolis and Baffle gab1978.

Newark, NJ references

The refs are a mess; most don't follow Wikipedia reference formatting guidelines and will be replaced with proper formatting. It's not arbitrariness, but rather competent, responsible editing that motivates corrections. Don't feel proprietary about the page; when proper formatting replaces improper formatting, everyone wins. Froid (talk) 14:13, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Froid, there is no mess. The problem is that you prefer using templates and the article doesn't. Per WP:CITEVAR, "When an article is already consistent, avoid... adding citation templates to an article that already uses a consistent system without templates, or removing citation templates from an article that uses them consistently". Your attempts to impose what you view as "proper formatting", are arbitrary, unnecessary and improper. Alansohn (talk) 14:16, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
No, you are mistaken. There's no justifiable reason to NOT use Wikipedia formatting style, especially in the case of this article, where the failure to do so has created numerous references that are improperly formatted -- that result is arbitrary, unnecessary, improper. Moreover, it contributes to the mess, which includes not only improperly formatted references, but improper grammar/mechanics/formatting within the article's text, as well. I encourage you to seek input from a Wikipedia arbitration body for help resolving our obvious strong differences about this article. Froid (talk) 14:23, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
Please read the guideline and explain how imposing your preference to change citation formats complies with WP:CITEVAR's rather clear statement that "When an article is already consistent, avoid... adding citation templates to an article that already uses a consistent system without templates, or removing citation templates from an article that uses them consistently". Before you come back here, at least address this rather clear policy issue with your needless changes. Alansohn (talk) 14:28, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Copyeditor's Barnstar
for the massive updated on NJ articles.
TheDwellerCamp (talk) 16:27, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Oh and I updated the number of municipalities on your userpage. changed from 566 to 565. just fyi. TheDwellerCamp (talk) 16:44, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

When I wrote it, the number 566 was correct until the Princeton merger. Alansohn (talk) 16:45, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
