DGG, Sigh, how many times do I have to ask you to actually do research before nominating an article I've created for deletion? Very frustrating... ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:25, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
I think the consensus is going to be to delete this one, as based upon travel guides and trivial notices. I agree I could have made a stronger nomination if I had found more of the same sort. DGG ( talk ) 05:47, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
Good luck with that... ---Another Believer (Talk) 11:32, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi--I nominated a page I created for deletion because the organizer, who is my abusive ex-partner, had me create it. It contains misleading information, some of which has already been corrected by other users, but people who were co-organizers of the We The People march, whom she did not want to credit on the page, have complained to me personally in recent weeks about not being given credit. They are not credited in any of the media surrounding the event because they got involved last minute and also because she wouldn't let anyone else speak to the media. I don't want to be bothered by people who are upset that she's taken credit for the entire event.

This is partly an issue about my own safety and privacy. I want the page I created deleted. If you or someone else wants to create an entirely new one, you're all free to do so. Tling2 (talk) 22:40, 6 June 2021 (UTC)Tling2

Notice

The article Dogwood Park has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Very small plot of land open to the public, but notability not asserted or established with substantive sources. City parks are not automatically notable.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Junior contributors comment completion rate across all participating Wikipedias
When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (Source)

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

  • Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
  • The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

Looking ahead

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

File:Tokyo 2019 39.jpg and File:Tokyo 2019 41.jpg

Resolved
Extended content

Are File:Tokyo 2019 39.jpg and File:Tokyo 2019 41.jpg valid for use on Commons? I'll defer to your judgement since you're significantly more active on Commons than I am, but my understanding of NFCC is that because the artwork in each image (by Gengoroh Tagame and Jiraiya, respectively) is presumably copyrighted, and because it's the main subject of the photograph, that makes the photo a derivative work. So even if you as the photographer disclaim all of your own rights over the photo, it's still protected by Tagame's and Jiraiya's copyrights. I was thrilled to finally have a lead image for Bara (genre), but I'm not certain its use is valid. Morgan695 (talk) 18:47, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

Morgan695, Thanks for pointing out. I had uploaded these as part of a mass transfer from my phone to Commons, and assumed these were just decorative wall art in the two establishments, but of course I'm open to deletion if necessary. @Missvain: Do you mind flagging on Commons if you think they are problematic? Sorry for the trouble! ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:56, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
Morgan695 Another Believer - Anyone can nominate Commons images for speedy, FYI. You can learn about that here. However, I'm probably just going to delete them (I am an admin) as copyright violations. Unless you can get permission from the artists? If you think you can, please let me know and I'll tag with a permission template. If not, I'll just delete as copy vios. Missvain (talk) 21:00, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
Missvain, I'm not wanting to worry about permissions. Thanks for handling! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:21, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

Extended content

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
  • Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, a snooker specialist and new to the Cup, with 647 points from a featured article, 2 featured article reviews, 6 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 3 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

Extended content

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Statue of Bee Gees moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Statue of Bee Gees, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). COVID-19 pandemic data

Hi. Will it still be possible to use Wikidata for several pages related to COVID-19, such as this template? Some editors used to suggest the idea of using Wikidata so that there will be less need to do updates manually. Fewer editors are still continuing to do so and doing updates have now become more challenging. LSGH (talk) (contributions) 18:09, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

LSGH, I'm not familiar with how Wikidata could be used. You might pose this question at Wikipedia:WikiProject COVID-19? ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:13, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
Discussions on the talk page seem to get little attention. A few days ago, I asked if there are other editors who might be able to edit the template, but help did not come. LSGH (talk) (contributions) 13:50, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
LSGH, Yup, WikiProjects are often not very active, but that still may be among the best spaces to share your thoughts. Or maybe a community portal at Wikidata? ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:51, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Mliu92, Wonderful, thanks for letting me know! I'm a little bothered by the question marks in the rides/attractions table, but looks pretty good otherwise. I'll request a copy edit from the Guild of Copy Editors soon, and see if anyone at WikiProject Amusement parks wants to review. Do you have any interest in co-nominating for Good article status, or no? ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:52, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Notice

The article Duane Sorenson has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable outside of a few local articles

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. – Broccoli & Coffee (Oh hai) 03:25, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Help with a draft article

Hi again! Are you down for helping me with a draft article I've been working on about a historic Oregon bridge? The link to the draft can be found at User:Tyrone Madera/sandbox/Hayden Bridge (Springfield, Oregon). Thanks a lot for your help with Oregon-related articles! Best, Tyrone Madera (talk) 18:04, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Tyrone Madera, I'll take a look, but I'm not very familiar with bridge article standards. I'd recommend moving the entry into main space and posting an invite for others to take a look at WikiProject Bridges and Tunnels. Thanks for helping to make Wikipedia better! ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:07, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! I just wanted to incorporate the sources from further reading and external links first, to get some heavy lifting out of the way. But, if you think that the main space is better, then fair enough. Thanks again for your help! Tyrone Madera (talk) 18:14, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Before I create it, I thought I'd ask if there was a reason that you didn't create a Drag Race National category (like DR Holland) for "The Switch". COVID cases in Nauru

Hello Another Believer, I am trying to have an opinion (from user who contribute to COVID articles) on this news: https://www.solomontimes.com/news/frontliners-test-negative-after-cargo-vessel-scare/10974. It seem that they have 13 positive cases on a ship in Nauru and I want to count them to this country. But, Nauru government still claim be covidfree (https://www.facebook.com/groups/219485726427273/) and reliefweb speak of "International conveyance" (https://reliefweb.int/map/world/epidemic-and-emerging-disease-alerts-pacific-27-july-2021). Have we to count these cases to Nauru? Regards, Sami270 (talk) 07:18, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

Sami270, I'm not sure, but you might want to focus on updating COVID-19_pandemic_in_Oceania#Nauru, or posting talk page requests for feedback at Talk:COVID-19 pandemic in Oceania or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject COVID-19. I see you've already posted a message at Template talk:COVID-19 pandemic data, which was the other place I would have suggested. ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:17, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

Please don't make edits like this without an explanation. Why did you think this was okay to do? "-" does not tell anybody why you think the article needs an article or how you think it is notable. WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

Extended content

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, Botswana The Rambling Man and New York (state) Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Republic of Venice Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, England Lee Vilenski, Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, Rwanda Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. George Floyd mural Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Use of autopatrolled perm

Hi Another Believer—I recently came across your autopatrolled article Statue of Edgar Martínez. In its present state, with only a single reference and no applicable SNG, the article does not meet notability standards, something I assume you know given your level of experience. The autopatrolled right is intended for editors who consistently create "clean" articles that do not require review by others. Please do not use it to create articles that do not demonstrate their notability, as that is an abuse of the permission. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 03:20, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Not that it really makes any difference, but is there a reason you feel "Australia / New Zealand" is better than "Australia & New Zealand"? --Pokelova (talk) 14:48, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

I don't feel too strongly. I guess this is similar to the discussion editors had re: which symbol to use for "Monét X Change + Trinity Taylor". "+" vs "/" vs "&"... ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:51, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
Also, I noticed Drag Race (franchise) has no symbol at all. (shrug) ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:53, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Tlalli

On 25 September 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tlalli, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Tlalli will replace a monument to Christopher Columbus, not to "erase history", but to "deliver social justice"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tlalli. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Tlalli), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Query

Hello, Another Believer,

I stumbled upon List of Wikipedia people and reviewing the people listed, I could see a connection between each individual to the English Wikipedia or the WMF except in the case of Andrea James. Since people aren't included on this list just for writing about or critiquing Wikipedia, the only reason I could guess that she was included was that she was an active contributor here. There are plenty of people who write about Wikipedia but they are not included on this list. Her own article doesn't talk about her participation on Wikipedia, just saying she wrote about the project. I noticed you had edited both articles so, without giving any personal identification, could you confirm she is notable in regards to working for or at Wikipedia/WMF? That seems to be the standard for inclusion on this list. Thanks for any help you can offer. Liz Read! Talk! 00:37, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

Based on the current article's prose, I would say she should not be included in the list; additionally, List of Wikipedia people should be removed from the See also section and Category:Wikipedia people should not be applied. Would you like to make these changes, or shall I? Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:11, 26 September 2021 (UTC) @Liz: Sorry!, I spoke too soon and I've changed my mind entirely. I read the prose too quickly and thought she wrote about Wikipedia. However, I now see she has contributed to Wikipedia. To me, this qualifies her for list inclusion (and the see also link and category apply). Sorry for the confusion! ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:20, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
Well, the only reference I could find was in one interview from years ago, she stated that she was in the Top 40 editors for creating articles but she added that she didn't edit any more. This really isn't confirmation to me, it's just a claim. And this list states it is "Wikipedia people" so, to me, that implies some formal relationship with the organization, it's not just editors who have an article written about them. But if you know her username and believe her to once have been a very active editor, then I trust your judgment about this. Liz Read! Talk! 02:05, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
@Liz: @If you think the article should be updated to remove the claim because of insufficient sourcing, I don't have a problem. Anyone can say they've edited Wikipedia in an interview. In my opinion, if the article's prose says someone contributes to Wikipedia, then list inclusion is appropriate, but if the claim is not appropriate for Wikipedia, then her article should be updated and her name should be removed from the list. I do not know her username, nor am I particularly interested in digging for more info. I am not opposed to putting the onus on editors to more clearly indicate her connection to Wikipedia using secondary coverage (not an interview). ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:11, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
See User:Jokestress. This did not take any digging or outing. It was the first hit when I searched for "Andrea James" in User space. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:51, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
@Jonesey95 Thanks! @Liz: FYI! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:54, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
Here's a link confirming top 40 in mainspace pages created (about 90% redirects), as of 2016. The count was about the same in 2013, when the editor stopped editing frequently, at which point they were at 150 in actual articles created. FWIW. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:59, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks again. I am comfortable leaving her at List of Wikipedia people but I think her article should be updated to use secondary coverage instead of an interview re: her connection to the project. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:00, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

I saw this on Facebook--if I can I'll drive by tomorrow morning and take some pictures, with my phone, so it might not be high quality. Thanks for writing it up. Drmies (talk) 02:38, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

@Drmies Wonderful, thank you! Keep in mind, you can only upload one image under fair use. Much appreciated! ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:39, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
Hey, I don't follow: you mean there's a rule, only one picture for a work of art? Interesting. BTW you know there's a statue of Sims on the front lawn of the state capitol, right? It's been a bone of contention for a few years now. Drmies (talk) 02:42, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
@Drmies Yes, since contemporary artworks are most often copyrighted, usually only one image can be uploaded for the entry's infobox. After you click on "upload file", click on "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use.", then " This is a depiction of a copyrighted three-dimensional work or building", then select "Other 3-dimensional creative work (sculpture etc)". Then, you can add other details such as artist and date, name of photographer and date, etc. I hope this helps! ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:46, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks--I'll keep that in mind. I might could take one of Sims too, though I've tried that before--the problem is his statue is partly in the shade, on an awkwardly hilly part, and obscured from various angles. Meh, I'm not sure he deserves another picture anyway. Drmies (talk) 02:48, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
By the way, your user page says "Portland"--yet everywhere on social media I read that BLM and Antifa burned down the ENTIRE city of Portland, and also every other important city in the country. Atlanta is still burning, apparently. Strange. Drmies (talk) 02:50, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
@Drmies Maybe don't believe everything you read on social media...! ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:53, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors September 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: From 20 to 26 June, 6 participating editors claimed 16 copy edits, focusing on requests and articles tagged in March and April. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Almost 575,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 24 people who signed up, 18 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 15 to 21 August, we copy edited articles tagged in April and May 2021 and requests. 9 participating editors completed 17 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

New maintenance template added to our project scope: After a short discussion in June, we added {{cleanup tense}} to the list of maintenance templates that adds articles to the Guild's copy editing backlog categories. This change added 198 articles, spread over 97 months of backlog, to our queue. We processed all of those articles except for those from the three or four most recent months during the July backlog elimination drive (Here's a link to a "tense" discussion during the drive).

Progress report: As of 18:26, 24 September 2021 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 468 requests since 1 January and there were 60 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.
