WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

Extended content

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  • England Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  • New York City Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  • Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  • Chicago PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  • Toronto Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  • England Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  • Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
  • Toronto Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  • SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  • England Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  • Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  • Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Congratulations

Not only on the recognition (well-deserved), but on all the good work you do around here. I'm in constant awe of those editors who are willing/able to spend time in the trenches working on current events, given that I've never had the patience to work on real-time articles myself. I also always enjoy seeing the work you do on Pacific Northwest-related topics; one of these days I may even get out there to see some of them myself firsthand. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:06, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

Drag Den for DYK?

Hi @Another Believer, do you believe that Drag Den is set for nomination of a DYK? I really don't know how it works, but it is, do I nominated as a 5x expanded? — JuanGLP (talk) 16:32, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

I would think this is considered a new article creation, not a 5x expansion. But, I've not worked with DYK for years, so you'll need to review Wikipedia:Did you know and Template talk:Did you know more closely. Give it a shot and Im'm sure someone else will let you know if you've done anything wrong. Good luck! ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:57, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Ouuu... I did not saw this message. I see that you are in vacation, and I did put it under 5x expanded. Currently I am making a bunch of ALT hooks since the reviewer is saying that the hook isn't looking a bit good. Don't worry about it, I am just letting you know. Have fun! — JuanGLP (talk) 20:16, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

No worries; I converted a long quotation in "Composition and release" from {{quote box}} to {{blockquote}} but an IP editor reverted my edit. I think that quotation could be integrated into running text without the woo about wombs and doors. Also, pull quotes aren't supposed to be used in article space per MOS:QUOTE, and the box formatting draws undue attention to the text, but I've left it in now. Anyway, good luck with your planned GA nomination. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 03:07, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Daily Dozen Doughnut Company

The article Daily Dozen Doughnut Company you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Daily Dozen Doughnut Company and Talk:Daily Dozen Doughnut Company/GA1 for issues which need to be addressed. Thanks so much! I appreciate the review and the barnstar. Funny enough, I reviewed one of Arkansore's GA nominations earlier this week. I took a look at the page and noted a few issues. Nothing serious, and again, something that can be ironed out within 10 min. I was a bit more liberal in helping clean up issues since I'm not the reviewer per se, please review everything I changed. The article Daily Dozen Doughnut Company you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Daily Dozen Doughnut Company for comments about the article, and Talk:Daily Dozen Doughnut Company/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Defunct restuarant. Non-notable. Supposed bar of the year, but couldn't survive. References are ultra local trade news, PR sites and professional review sites like Conde Nast. Fails WP:SIGCOV.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. It's got nothing to do with some false inclusionist-deletionist dichotomy; it's about the rules WP has, and has for good reason. WP:N requires sources (plural) that address the topic directly and in detail. A dozen "list-of-donut-shops" sources that repeat, over and over and over, that a donut shop, well, makes donuts, which you get in a paper bag with sugar if you want it, and that donuts are yummy on a cold day, is not in any conceivable sense "in detail". It is, in fact, what any writeup of any donut shop is going to say. EEng 19:11, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
We can keep the notability discussion to the article's Talk page. I'm not too worried about the entry's fate. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:14, 10 December 2022 (UTC)

Despite what EEng said, some doughnut shop articles become good articles. They can even become Good Articles. Leonard's Bakery comes to mind. Unless you want to go into the metaphysics of whether a malasada is a doughnut. ☆ Bri (talk) 15:50, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

Your views

I am trying to write an article for The Signpost. One of the sub-topics was the idea of "Wikipedia influencers". Here is a rough paragraph,

Wikipedia's structure and culture cultivates influence, not influencers. A commonsense sample of search engine search results shows this. Influencer redirects to internet celebrity here. Wikipedia users would be repulsed by such a label. Wikipedia users who interact with the mainspace prefer to be called editors, not micro-influencers, irrespective of the article.

I wanted to know your views on this, i.e. applying the general concept of internet/social media influencers to Wikipedia. What would the concept even look like if you were supportive of such a phrase? FacetsOfNonStickPans (talk) 18:56, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

@FacetsOfNonStickPans I'm not sure I follow. You're suggesting a Wikipedia contributor like me should be "repulsed" by being referred to as an influencer? May I ask why you're asking me specifically? ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:50, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi. G'day. On typing "Wikipedia influencer" in Wikipedia search, your article 'Jason Moore (Wikipedia editor)' is the only result. And there is a line relevant to my sub-topic, " CNN Business described Moore as a "Wikipedia influencer" ". Apart from this, there are no substantiative results regarding this phrase even outside Wikipedia, say when using search engines. In such a case taking views from others helps with the underlying understanding and connected worldviews. I would surely even quote you if you didn't mind.
Yes, I do understand your interpretation of the lines. They clearly have a negative approach to the concept. But then this entire sub-topic will have more lines. And I hope to balance the antipodalities. As compared to YouTube, Instagram, Twitch, Twitter, TikTok, Reddit influencers, the conceptualization of Wikipedia influencers seems vague. FacetsOfNonStickPans (talk) 20:15, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
@FacetsOfNonStickPans I don't use the phrase "Wikipedia influencer" nor have I described myself as one. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:42, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
It reflects poorly on CNN that they see this as a big social media "game" of attracting likes or whatever "Social media influencers" do. ☆ Bri (talk) 21:39, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

Thoughts for WP:RPDR

Extended content

I've noticed that it's somewhat common for fans to want to edit Wikipedia articles of drag queens in violation of WP:BLPPRIVACY to include things like full legal names, dates of birth, even full names of family members. This is already taken care of at WP:BLPPRIVACY, which says they need to be widely published by reliable sources, or by sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object to the details being made public, but I wonder if a quick reminder on the project page itself might be worth having as well? Or do you think that's overkill/unnecessary repetition of Wikipedia's policies. Posting on your talk page because you're pretty good at paying attention to this sort of stuff and reverting these additions when they crop up. Umimmak (talk) 17:15, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

@Umimmak I would not be opposed, though I'm not sure project members are the problematic editors (so might be a bit like preaching to the choir?). I'm very tired of removing unsourced/inappropriate biographical details. You're more than welcome to float this idea on the WikiProject RPDR talk page. If anything the talk page reminder is helpful but also editors might welcome the project page suggestion. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:33, 20 December 2022 (UTC)
True that definitely makes sense; I suppose anyone who's into editing enough to join a WikiProject will also know the basics of BLP articles... I guess I was thinking about just having it be an easy thing to point to (though WP:BLPPRIVACY I guess does that), but thanks for the encouragement to bring this up to the talk page :) Umimmak (talk) 17:35, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

@Umimmak Example of how the birth date shenanigans often happens. (sigh) ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:41, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
I just had a productive discussion with Oversight who were quick to redact edit histories containing the (not widely publicized) legal names of the Boulet Brothers and temporarily block the offending user. I think I'll go ahead and draft something for the talk page just so more users can be more aware of what to do in these situations. Umimmak (talk) 22:03, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and posted something on WT:RPDR, thanks for the encouragement. Umimmak (talk) 22:21, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, AB!

The other day, I was having a conversation with someone about holiday cards and social media. It occurred to me that, in the years since I left Facebook, the site I use most to communicate with people I like isn't actually a social media site at all. If you're receiving this, it's pretty likely I've talked with you more recently than I have my distant relatives and college friends on FB, at very least, and we may have even collaborated on something useful. So here's a holiday "card", Wikipedia friend. :) Hope the next couple weeks bring some fun and/or rest. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:09, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
