I was wondering about two things regarding the article:

  • As the article is essentially about the original game, it's pretty much assumed that the gameplay and plot sections refers to the NES version's gameplay. Therefore I believe "(NES version)" in the caption of the first two images in the body are unnecessary, while the image of the WSC version needs to state that it's from the WSC version.
  • There are several parentheses throughout the plot section that confuse me. Example: "Lefeinish (Lufenian)". I think it refers to the original name, and to the name used in later versions in parenthesis, but I'm not sure. Anyway, if I'm correct, I think the parentheses can be removed, based on my first comment. This would also help trimming the plot section a little. A hidden note could also be added, telling the reader that the name's refer to the original game.

So, what do you think? The Prince (talk) 00:48, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

I've removed the parentheses. Do you know how to add the Edit Notice, because I don't. The Prince (talk) 13:11, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
Maybe something like: "This article is mainly about the original NES version of the game, and therefore only the original names of e.g. items, races, and locations should be used in the Gameplay and Plot sections. Other relevant information about later versions should be added in the Versions and re-releases section instead." The Prince (talk) 14:30, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
I see you've beat me to the punch. Thanks for taking care of it. The Prince (talk) 14:51, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

You can go ahead and close it. I'm trying to figure out the method and it's just frustrating me. The instructions for closing aren't making sense.--Remurmur (talk) 07:50, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Gary. Earlier this morning, I was trying to implement sorted and unlinked dates into List of English football transfers winter 2008–09 with {{dts}}. Unfortunately, I was informed that this was not possible due to template limits (the article also uses citation templates and {{sortname}}). Is there any way to fix the dates without surpassing the template limits? Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 16:28, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I am also having the same sorting problem; let me comment out twinkle and friendly on my monobook and try. Dabomb87 (talk) 18:06, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
You are right, hm, have you talked to User:Azatoth and User:Ioeth about it? Dabomb87 (talk) 18:10, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
It is definitely a Twinkle/Friendly problem; the sorting on Internet Explorer works fine; consequently, Twinkle and Friendly do not work at all on IE. Dabomb87 (talk) 18:12, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
I noticed another thing: For the past couple of weeks, the page tabs at the top were shortened by default ("discussion"-->"talk", "new section"-->"+"). When I removed those scripts, they reverted back to their full-out names, I wonder if this is also an associated problem. Dabomb87 (talk) 18:16, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the revert; how can you find the template limits anyway? Dabomb87 (talk) 18:17, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Re: Expansion Packs

Depends on the article. For example, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 will not have much more beyond two or three paragraphs in total once the new features are discussed and the gold and platinum editions mentioned. Then of course there is Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne or Brood War. For TLotR, I would put the expansion info as a seperate heading after Release (Expansion or similar); that's what I'm doing with Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST, and I figure it's a good "coda" for the video game article. I put you as co-nominator for All Hope Is Gone FA nominaton. REZTER TALK ø 14:25, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi

We've talked but never really talked if you know what I mean. We've been more of acquaintances. I feel it is long over due and I see you almost everywhere. So, hi! How do you do? My name is William, and it is nice to meet you.--WillC 14:52, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, so what projects are you working on now? I'm guessing some type of video game probably.--WillC 14:55, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
I'll take it into consideration. I've never expanded a video game article and been wondering how I'm going to expand TNA Impact! (video game) since I'll be the only one that will expand it. I'm not too familiar with the Metroid series. I always wanted to buy all the ones on Gamecube but never did. I did borrow 2: Prime from a friend and played it. It was one of the hardest games I've ever played. I believe I got 10% on it before I gave it back to him.--WillC 15:01, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
That is one problem I'm probably going to have with Impact!. They had that thing in development hell for three or four years. From mid-04 to late 08. It was supposed to have been release early 08 but got pushed by twice. It isn't a very popular game, so no telling if I'll be able to fine sources. But that is a future project anyway. I have everything seen here to finish first. I see you have alot of Featured topics, how long did that take you?--WillC 15:08, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
What is it called?--WillC 15:16, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Well it seems you like five from being done. The only one I've ever played on those is Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. How long will you think it will take you to finish all of them and nominate them for a topic?--WillC 15:23, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Yeah I understand. The GA and FA backlog are always long. It took the four I got to GA already probably a month and a half to pass. It took the first one I wrote Lockdown (2008) probably two months since I got it reviewed and then the nominator left so I had to wait for another review. I've had one on there now for a month and a half. Wondering when it will get reviewed. The FAC process takes almost as long. It took Lockdown three weeks its first time around and a month and a week its second. I'm glad the thing finally passed. My only advice for Samus is too read alot of other FA or GA character articles to get more ideas. I'm going through films and video games reception sections thinking of new ideas for wrestling PPV events receptions, it helps in the end.--WillC 15:53, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm guessing you are a Slipknot fan for having the All Hope is Gone album at FAC?--WillC 18:18, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
How long have you been a fan of their's?--WillC 18:29, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Since almost the beginning then. I just recently became a fan in late 07 and 08. I couldn't stand listening to them before then. A friend of mine loved them but I just wasn't much into metal at the time.--WillC 18:56, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you

Gary, thanks for all your suggestions and patience with the GA review for High-level radioactive waste management. It was a pleasure to work with you and Dabomb and learn how some of these things are done. Maybe we'll have another opportunity on some other occasion. And thank you for the rating as well, of course. Mervyn Emrys (talk) 20:37, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

I asked a few questions on the linked page. Anyway I am close to passing the article as a GA, and wish to consider your opinion if you think the article is GA quality. Crystal whacker (talk) 20:48, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Metroid II

I noticed you'd been putting a lot of work into this article recently to get it to GA standard (not to mention your FA work on the Prime series, which was awesome, and I thank you for). Unfortunately, I don't have any suitable development info for that or its prequel. What I wanted to talk to you about was the remakes section. I saw that you had marked two refs with the questionable source tag. I'm actually not arguing your actions; I just want to make sure you see the reasoning behind why we allowed that entire section and the two refs backing it to get into the article, which you probably wouldn't have seen since the discussion about it started at the Metroid II discussion page (in this convo) and then ended up moving to my own talk page (here). Whether those links continue to be considered reputable is up to whoever will look over the article for eventual FA status, I suppose, but I just want you to be aware of all angles so you won't be surprised by any results or know enough to argue your own opinion if and when the time comes. Though it's probably notable that there will never be more reliable refs we could possibly find for that section due to the legality of the subject matter and major sites not wanting to cover it, so I imagine if these refs get the axe, then the article will likely have to ditch all info on the remakes for good. The template is coded to require the use of the B-class checklist for C- or B-class ratings. If the checklist isn't filled out the template shows it as Start-class, and categorizes it accordingly. I've done this for several reasons. According to Template:Grading scheme, in order for an article to be B-class, it needs to satisfy 6 criteria (Our requirement was developed earlier, and is for just the first 5). If any one of the five are "no", for example if it was not suitably referenced (#1), then at best it is a C-class article. If it only meets 2 or less (or none if the checklist isn't done) of the five then it is automatically assessed as start-Class. By using the checklist the article is placed in a number of maintenance categories. If you say "no" to criteria #1, it goes in Category:Aviation articles needing attention to referencing and citation, #2 is Category:Aviation articles needing attention to coverage and accuracy, etc. I've put instructions to this effect at Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Assessment and Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Project banner, but if more explicit warnings are required, I suppose I could add code to the template to have a warning pop up, how about "You have assessed this article as (C- or B)-Class. Until you complete the B-class Checklist, is will be assessed as Start-Class."

Overall I had hoped this system would enforce proper assessing of articles and the use of maintenance categories for better editing. - Trevor MacInnis (Contribs) 18:42, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Metroid articles

Awesome job on the Metroid articles so far. Might I suggest adding information on the games' musical scores, which are notable in that soundtracks have been released and pieces have been played at the Game Music Concerts as well as remixed for later titles such as the Super Smash Bros. series. You could also add some merchandise info, especially to Super Metroid which had plenty available through Nintendo Power during its release in North America. It would be helpful to find some reliable sales info though; I'm wondering how many copies each of the games has sold considering their "Player's Choice: Million Seller" status. ~ Hibana 04:16, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

I don't either, but some of it, as well as the ads for it, can be found here at the Metroid Database. ~ Hibana 05:23, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Gary. You have new messages at Rst20xx's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

I don't know. The intro is the only part of Metroid Fusion that seems to need improvement. Gameplay and plot could use a bit more work, but I would wait for the GA feedback to change it before you removed it. But if you complain, alright, I'll edit it a bit more before re-nominating. Also, thanks for your contributions in that article, including doing something my laziness prevented (expanding Reception). igordebraga 18:24, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Scene7

Yeah, sorry...don't have time to do a full review at the moment. The main thing I was worried about was comprehensiveness (we're still not told anything more specific than "mid-1990s" for its origins in Autodesk...a brief search on LexisNexis returned some news articles on the launch of Picture This Home on January 15, 1997...it was apparently the first software to earn the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval...the articles also discussed Autodesk's vision for the product and its role in the marketplace). BuddingJournalist 09:31, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Wow, thanks for re-adding Lost. I am sorry that I opposed—I just could not support something (even if it did follow the rules) that was potentially my request's downfall and the reason given for my oppose was filler. I was surprised by some of the reasons for the other opposes, although some of them might have been made in favour of mine. Best of luck for your next TFA(R). Oh, and nice work topping WBFLN(08). –thedemonhog talkedits 04:17, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Quick look over

So, I'm kinda new to this whole video game article writing business, but from what I've gathered, it looks like you're the king (pun completely intended). I was hoping to bring Star Wars: Rogue Squadron to FAC sometime soon, but I don't want to look foolish when I do. Jennifer Hale on Samus Aran voice acting

Might be of use. The bit is right at the beginning. Recalled similar character articles quote what their voice actors think about the character/approach the work so it might be of use. Also oddly she's not mentioned at all in Samus's article, just the 2008 voice actor.

Hope that helps.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 10:09, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

I don't know to be honest, I've never played them. Though from what's there she clearly says she does. Hale's wikipedia article also credits her as speaking in all three games.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 16:35, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

DYKs

I've asked about that before and didn't receive an answer as to what it meant. I was shown that the current format was alright and it seemed to match the pages of others. As well as this they were counted on previous occasions. All of the DYKs were nominated this year if that's what you mean (I'm not sure if that's what you were asking?). In fact half of them are currently on the Main Page, another quarter were on earlier today and as I'm the creator and main contributor to them all I would be the most likely nominator too. Other than that I'm not entirely sure what you mean but I hope it helps. :) --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 03:54, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Oh right. Yeah. I asked about that somewhere too. Especially since #2 was actually put onto the page by someone in my absence. So #1 doesn't count? I figured out that I had access dates on the cite webs, but they weren't showing up on the references section due to a space being between access and date instead of it being spelled accessdate. Should I go ahead and remove your accessdate's and fix the original access dates? Or should I just edit out the old access dates? Or should I just leave it?Camelbinky (talk) 21:07, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

I have reviewed your article for GA and placed it on hold. The comments are at Talk:Outliers (book)/GA1. The aricle is very thorough. Aside from a few picky prose issues, my main complaint is that it seems somewhat long and repetitious, with too many quotes and examples that do not add more information. (And the enigmatic behavior of J. Robert Oppenheimer was left hanging - he tried to poison his tutor but was able to "compromise"!) Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 19:32, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

en dash

I noticed that you changed the dashes in the titles of all the Pokémon lists from - to –. Could you explain why you did this? Unlike the simple -, the %E2%80%93 kind of dash is not on my keyboard. Moreover, your actions created about 500 double redirects, as there are about 500 Pokémon, and their names redirect to their entries in the lists (a few examples: Spearow, Fearow, Ekans, Arbok). Cheers, theFace 21:36, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Half-Life (Series) Plot

I'm currently updating the page to include Episode 1,2,3 information. As soon as I'm done I will add the upcoming video game template at the beginning of the section since episode 3 has yet to be released. Before I add the few plot details that have been revealed, I will find a source to credit the information.

I saw your comment on that page about merging all of the episodes into one paragraph and if you would like to do that, it is fine with me. However I believe that there is too much information in those 3 episodes to merge their plots. Tell me what you think!

Ok. I'll attempt to refine it after I'm done, I'm currently on Episode 2.

I don't think so. We want to avoid misrepresenting the work—and throwing up a different typography is doing that. On the other hand, if we create a version too close to the original, it's derivative and thus needs a FUR (like File:Aoe fuchs.png). --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 01:56, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

I saw this on Wikipedia:Gadgets and immediately gave it a try. I thought you might be interested in a quick review.

  • Why change the formatting of dates by default? IMHO best just provide a class for dates and let users decide on formatting themselves.
  • I find it remarkably useful to have it written clearly when a post made was today, yesterday or in the last week. But finding out that X edit was made 5 weeks, 3 days, 5 hours and 37 minutes ago seems a bit trivial. Wouldn't it be better to leave anything from last week intact other than changing the time zone?

(You might as well respond here or else I'll lost track of he conversation.) — Blue-Haired Lawyer 19:48, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

I agree that the default format of YMD might not be a good idea considering that Wikipedia uses DMY by default, so I have changed the script to use DMY by default. However, users can already change the date's format. Check WP:LOCO#Settings. Also, trivial, perhaps, but I still appreciate seeing the date relative to today, knowing that it was a few months or years ago. Gary King (talk) 20:10, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Cheers for the quick response, but I meant the font size. The ambiguity only strikes me now! — Blue-Haired Lawyer 20:14, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I removed the 90% font size and instead wrapped the timestamps in a localcomments class. I suppose it can be a big change for people new to the script to see all timestamps in small font (I am used to it as I've been using the script for about a year). I'd like to also point out that the script doesn't say "5 weeks, 3 days, 5 hours and 37 minutes ago" like you said; it only gives the date in years, months, and days ago :) Gary King (talk) 20:18, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Is there a way to get the smaller size back? Having gotten used to it, I now find it much better as it is easier to find the date stamps. (It also makes it easier to find the end of comments as well.) --Ckatzchatspy 22:11, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
I agree, I like the smaller font too. But ultimately, I decided to make the normal font size the default as newbies to the script will be most used to that. However, yes, you can make it smaller again by following the instructions at WP:LOCO#Settings, and instead of font-size: 100%, set it to font-size: 90% and you're all set. Gary King (talk) 22:19, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply; I've added the .css configuration and it works well. You've done a nice job with this script - thanks again. --Ckatzchatspy 23:05, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

← On second thoughts if you're keeping the long date format, I guess having a small font size makes sense. Anyway, acting on my own preference and just to see if I could do it I've written my own script here. Just thought you might be curious. — Blue-Haired Lawyer 20:02, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

I've noticed a new issue. here, I see 16:50, 31 January 2009 (UTC) in the edit box and 11:50 am, January 3, 2009, Friday (29 days ago) (UTC−5) in the main window, for some reason it thinks January 31 is January 3. Thanks, §hepTalk 01:42, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

refs before or after punctuation

I know it's minor, but as you do a load of very helpful GA reviewing, I thought I'd point out that you can't really put "move refs to after punctuation" in a GA review, because MoS says consistency is needed, but either usage (before or after) is fine. - Jarry1250 (t, c) 20:31, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

See if anything else is needed in the lead (and all of the article, in fact). igordebraga 20:34, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Gary, my friend, when you nominated this a few days ago, Sandy removed it with a note about limiting to 1 FAC at a time while FAC is backlogged. The backlog has lessened, but you know we have a rule concerning multiple concurrent FACs. I'm baffled why you would re-renominate a 3rd FAC when neither of your first 2 has gained significant support. Am I missing a piece of the puzzle here? Maralia (talk) 05:18, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Gary, until we get more reviewers or the backlog is decreased, we need to stick to one nom at a time; you have three on the page now. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:16, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Adding empty sections with an expand tag

I'm not really sure this is the best way to go about improving the article (adding an empty section in hopes someone will come along and fill it in)... –xeno (talk) 21:54, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Well, one of my goals is to standardize the sections for all video game articles. And, on the contrary, I think that adding empty sections with expand templates do work. I've seen it work in articles that I've worked on, especially for Plot sections, because people really enjoy writing those. Gary King (talk) 21:56, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Maybe for a new or upcoming game , but I doubt someone is going to come along and fill in those empty sections for the Leisure Suit Larrys, for example. Perhaps go forward with this in mind... –xeno (talk) 21:58, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't think so. I've had particular luck with books that are about a hundred years old; I put an empty Plot section with an expand template, and in a day or two someone has written the section. Gary King (talk) 22:00, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Cleanup?

Since when does removing templates requesting that references be found and added, qualify as an article "cleanup"? Could you please provide a more accurate summary of your edits.

Also why would you remove an Unreferencedsect template from the Cossacks: European Wars article? I can't work out why your removed the Expand-section template from the same article either. - Shiftchange (talk) 22:14, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

The expand template was removed because it isn't clear what needs to be expanded. I suggest using the expand template in an empty section to make it clear that there is a request for that section to be written. If we were to place an expand template in a section that already has text, then nearly every article's sections would have expand templates. Same with the refimprove; the article already is already more well referenced than the grand majority of articles. Gary King (talk) 22:19, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Anyways, ultimately it is a matter of personal preference of when and where to use maintenance templates. If you feel that some or all of them should be re-added, please feel free to do so. When I edited that article, I was going through other articles and re-organizing them, which was my primary focus. Gary King (talk) 22:31, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Off on a tangent, I think I'm going to review one of your GANs tomorrow. I will try to look at content more so that the articles don't get battered at FAC for lack of research and such. Any preference on which to look at? Dabomb87 (talk) 03:51, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Re: Dance Dance Revolution

Yeah, but I don't think the name is supposed to have spaces, at least nowadays. It's written without spaces in every instance I've seen of it in DDR X; the box, the game, the promotional material, etc. Elm-39 - T/C 13:04, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

How about I just make a mention about it, such as "Dance Dance Revolution, stylized DanceDanceRevolution..."? I've seen other articles do this. Elm-39 - T/C 17:20, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Plot and Synopsis

I've actually got to thank you, for some reason your explanation of the terms actually sunk in. I've always thought that "Plot" should be the main header for a game's story section, and "Synopsis" is the summary of the story itself. Hard to believe it took this long to make things click; maybe you just said it in a way that made sense. Anyway, sorry for any inconvenience, I just thought that a synopsis could be summary of potentially anything (synopsis of the plot, of the story, of the day's events, etc.), and a plot section is what encompassed both the characters and the story. Thanks again for somehow cracking enlightenment through my somewhat thick skull, this was actually a bright point in my day. -- Commdor {Talk} 20:31, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Yep, I can't believe the popularity either, but it will probably shift over to Modern Warfare 2 once that's out (something to worry about down the line, but depending on if I can get another article I'm working on to FA, I may not be editing as much by then). I tried trimming a little off the plot yesterday, but I've been editing the article so long I guess lost objectivity. I don't think I've seen you edit around there for a while, and it appears you had the fresh perspective needed to make real cuts. In any case I'll continue to keep my eye on the article, so things shouldn't get too out of hand too quickly. Thanks for understanding about the plot thing, it just takes eureka moments for me to change my views on anything nowadays. -- Commdor {Talk} 20:52, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the DYK idea, went ahead and added one. The hook I made seems a bit dry, but I've never contributed to DYK before so I'm not acquainted with the content standards; i.e. if a hook is supposed to be about the topic as a whole (which is how I made mine), or just an interesting factoid from the article. Should be fine, though. -- Commdor {Talk} 20:48, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Should be fixed, the hook is mentioned (and now cited) in the intro and explained in more detail in the development section. If it's a problem that multiple sources relate the info in the hook, then there's my second choice to mention the Resident Evil 5 voice actor's working with the game. -- Commdor {Talk} 21:09, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Awards lists

Wow, that was fast. While you are at it, you may want to make the merger/acquisition lists consistent too. Dabomb87 (talk) 05:11, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

They're pretty much consistent already. Some of them don't have mergers so they don't have "mergers" in their name. Gary King (talk) 06:00, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Ah. For some reason I thought that there were lists titled "List of X mergers". It seems there isn't, so it is fine. Dabomb87 (talk) 13:32, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Tours lists

It looks like your tour page is a little bit different from mine, so feel free to use whatever criteria you deem worthy. I tended to include all NIN tours (ie more than once event), but skipped one-off performances (like an MTV VMA performance or something like that). Since I guess multiple dates/locations defines a "tour". Hope that helps. Drewcifer (talk) 01:10, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Is S@bre's RfA enough evidence that you would pass by a landslide? You two share a lot of the same characteristics -- superb content contributions, cool head, no major civility issues or other disputes -- and you have the benefit of not attracting the "OMG deletionist!" !votes that occasionally turn up as well as having a staggering amount of content contributions that would blow away the RfA regulars. Userbox for GA reviews

The userbox {{User Good Articles reviewed}} has been updated so that it can now link to a page in your user subspace where you keep track of all your GA reviews, if you have such a page. This can be done by adding a | and then the name of your user subpage (or subsection of your regular user page) wherever you have the template called. For example, on my user page I am using

{{User Good Articles reviewed|6|User:Rjanag/GA reviews}}

which displays as

This user has reviewed 6 Good Article nominations on Wikipedia.

There is more information on how to do this at Template:User Good Articles reviewed.

Note: If you are not interested in doing this, you don't have to do anything; the template will still work for you exactly as it does now.

modern warfare plot

I know you are bitching about 700 words, but why delete the images? Except for Prypiat. Mallerd (talk) 02:55, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Be consequent. If you understand that people want a picture, I'd say place some more like before. But to say that Prypiat picture shows how desolate the place really is, is not a good reason to keep that one and delete the others because they are "just" weapons. I know you understand but I think you just don't give a sh*t. Mallerd (talk) 03:11, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't care where you took it, point is: the article looks empty with this massive text and so few images. You removed some of them inconsequently and now that I am confronting you with it, it is uncivil. Right. The extra images are no harm to the article and you know it because they fall under the same quilification scale of the picture you decided to keep. Mallerd (talk) 03:26, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
That is nonsense, a marine has just as much to do with the plot as a ac-130h etc., because they are mentioned in the plot. That is what it is about. It seems you like to own this article Gary. A real shame, you are just not consequent. Mallerd (talk) 10:26, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Image/File

I noticed you switched my change back to File instead of Image on Final Fantasy (video game). Is this the preferred way of listing images? I was just using the changes checklinks made, but I can easily switch back tags when fixing links if they should not be changed to Image. Thanks, Ost (talk) 20:54, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the response and help. I played around more with checklinks and it doesn't seem to change File to Image on all pages (including if you try to run it on Final Fantasy again). I think it may have to do with consistency within the article. Before my edit, some of the markup used Image and others used File. My edit changed to all Image and your current revision is all File. I could be wrong, but I know I didn't manually change to Image. I'll pay attention for the change in the future and be sure to use File. —Ost (talk) 22:05, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Universities vs. Colleges

There is a legal difference between a college and a university in Alberta. The the articles List of universities in the Canadian Prairies and List of universities and colleges in Alberta both eroneously list colleges as universities. Currently there is a bill before the Alberta legislature to rechristen MacEwan College and Mount Royal College as universities Intercamp, "MacEwan and MRC could add University to name". A university is also different that a "university college" which is infact, legally a college. (see Alberta Advanced Education). In both cases I think we should work to correct the articles, and since you have been a major contributor, I would like to work with you to build consensus for the changes.

On a related note, I agree with the recently posted critque of List of universities in the Canadian Prairies that it is geographically abtitrary. Why should they not be provincial rather than regional lists? Legaly universities are creations of the provinces. --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 21:20, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

I take it you agree that the lack of distinction between colleges and universities and colleges is a problem. Yes? --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 21:49, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

1. Universities are not the only intitutions that offer degrees in Alberta. Some colleges do as well. Specifically: Private Colleges:

  • Ambrose University College
  • Canadian University College
  • Concordia University College of Alberta
  • DeVry Institute of Technology-Calgary
  • The King's University College
  • St. Mary's University College
  • Taylor University College and Seminary

Public Colleges:

  • Grant MacEwan College
  • Mount Royal College

2. "University Colleges" in Alberta are legally colleges, not universities.

see Advanced Education and Technology > Post-Secondary System --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 03:08, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm going to assume that the Government of Alberta's definition of a university has legal force whereas the AUCC's does not. I would think that this is not the only province where this is true. We should look for province-specific sources, rather than relying on the AUCC. --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 19:54, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

I don't know who added it, or when it was added, but there is a {{fact}} tag in List of universities in Canada, for the statement "There are 83 universities in Canada that are post-secondary education institutions with degree-granting authority.". Dabomb87 (talk) 04:30, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Question about Ratings

Hey, I'm Hunter, the guy who reviewed the GAN for Bart the Mother. I figured you could answer this question for me. How can I find the weekly ratings from the week a specific episode aired? For example, I'd like to improve this specific Law & Order episode to GA status, but it aired on November 28, 2006 and I don't know how to find the ratings for it from that week. Can you help? --Hunter Kahn (talk) 15:58, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

  • Thank you VERY much! I couldn't find anything on the ratings for this episode, so I really appreciate that link. Is this the site you use regularly for ratings? Since I imagine I'll be looking doing more episode articles in the future... --Hunter Kahn (talk) 18:08, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Please, don't withdraw this (you can make a nomination to add Samus later, or if it reaches GA status while the FTC is running, edit the nomination to include it). igordebraga 22:16, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

It's just that you run lots of simultaneous projects, and only recently the GA process went back to being quick, didn't think Samus could reach GA level fastly. But all apologies, maybe I can help you with the remaining article to make things the way you planned (although the Kingdom Hearts and Halo FTs show complementing a topic isn't that hard). igordebraga 15:10, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I added some info to that sandbox version (you know I sometimes update your "Goals" page, so I knew about it), and wondered if anything here can be helpful. I had an idea to solve the confusion, but I don't know if you'll object: after Samus passes the GA, restarting my nomination, but on the Good Topics (the FA process is too slow to wait... not to mention unpredictable, thought your MPH nomination would pass). igordebraga 00:37, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Consultation

Hey Gary, I'm thinking that maybe "titles" featured topics should have "List of media" or "List of games" as their main article, if such an article exists, and only have "series" as their main if such an article doesn't exist. This in a sense is similar to how "albums" topics have "discography" as their main article, and not the band themselves, and lines the "titles" topics up better with the idea of overview topics.

I went through the existing topics to have a look and see what topics such a change would effect, and found two - both yours! One would be StarCraft, but the List of StarCraft media is an FL so no work needed there, just a sup nom to change the lead across. The other would be the Zelda topic, but List of The Legend of Zelda games isn't featured. However if you DID get it featured and swap it for the GA lead, then that would bring the number of featured articles in that topic to 5/13, so that is a potential route to getting the topic to 33% featured.

What do you think? Obviously there'd be no big rush to make the change, you could take your time to make the list featured, but I think this way makes more sense - rst20xx (talk) 13:40, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Gary- let me know when you plan on working on the Zelda list. I meant to finish it up for FLC a while ago but got bogged down with other things. I think I have a some print sources for some of the obscure bits of info too. The both of us working together on it should speed up the improvement process considerably. (Guyinblack25 talk 20:50, 5 March 2009 (UTC))
Well I guess it's up to you, Gary, to sup nom each topic across, if/when you're ready to do so - rst20xx (talk) 21:23, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I've withdrawn the Metroid titles FTC nomination. But to restart it later... do you mind if I already transfer the contents of this page? (people are sensitive about "stealing" contents from subpages, and you seem to be working in other things right now, specially Watchmen) Unrelated note: see if anything else is needed in Minority Report (film). igordebraga 18:14, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Moving without any consensus or reason

Your recent move of Henry Fielding's early plays goes against the ideas of consensus and are completely inappropriate. This served no purpose and is disruptive. Please revert yourself at once. Ottava Rima (talk) 22:37, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

No. Many FAs have subpages with possessives. You want to have the proper name first for unification. Hence, Samuel Johnson's early life, Samuel Johnson's health, Charles Darwin's education, etc. Ottava Rima (talk) 22:58, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Gary, I'm Aubrey from italian wikisource. Could I ask you why you remove the link to italian wikisource from Schiaparelli page? I'm not comfortable with en.pedia, so I'm really looking forward tips and advices. An A-class review request

Hey Gary, I was wondering if you could review the Spokane, Washington article in an ACR. After you read the article, I believe all you need to do is apply the A-Class criteria to the article and put whether you believe it is worthy of being A-class in the section dealing with the review in the articles Talk page. Also, in addition to doing the assessment, it would be helpful if you could include some points for improvement. If you are up to review it, notify me here or on my Talk so I can stop looking for reviewers. Thanks! Anon134 (talk) 20:27, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice Gary. I will do as you suggested: I will try to integrate it into the article, as well as explaining my use of propaganda by deed as I do so. I appreciate you being reasonable, and working with me on this to figure something out instead of edit warring ... if only that happened with people here more often! ... Jrtayloriv (talk) 23:01, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Gary -- I just read about the quote template, and I'll take care of that in a moment, as well as the spacing. As far as the lengthy quotes, I do think they are important as they stand. Considering all of the talk that focuses on psychology -- whether or not he was insane -- I think it is important to balance things out by adding what he said he was thinking.
Also, this is one of a very few primary sources in the article, as opposed to commentary by people who:
a) were not involved,
b) were members of his family who had very little contact with him as he made the transition from professor to bomber,
c) were at the court proceedings, and while they do present at least present some of his perspective on what went on during his trial, they still don't shed much light on his original motivations ...
anyway thanks again for the advice ... I'll have the new edit up in a jiffy!

Image review at FLC

Hi, Gary. I conducted an image review at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of United States Naval Academy alumni, but the nominator has said that I was over the top, and too strict and nitpicky. I've asked Ecobbola, who is more experienced in image reviewing to comment, and I was wondering if you, as a non-image reviewer would be able to visit and comment also. Was I too strict? Does correct license tagging on Commons matter for article purposes, or should it be kept a separate thing?

I know an image needs a FUR if it is not GFDL or Creative Commons licensed or in the public domain, but when an image is said to be in the public domain, does that need to be verified or can it be assumed by, for example, the age or career of the subject in the photo?

This was my first image review, so if I was wrong, I'd like to know for future purposes. Regards, Matthewedwards (talk contribs  email) 00:35, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Proper style

Please familiarize yourself with WP:MOSPOKER before randomly changing citation styles. Poker articles should have "Notes" for inline citations and "References" for general article references. Additionally, it is never appropriate to merely change from one type of citation style to another. Also, please don't add incorrect access dates to citations. Soemthing that has been in an article for four years should never be labeled as accessed today. This causes considerable confusion. 2005 (talk) 06:03, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Metroid multiplayer aspect deletion

Hi, if you poll random people about metroid prime hunters I guarantee you more people focus on the multiplayer aspect, why, because single player sucks, let me put it this way, this game is one of the top 10 guides on strategy wiki and it's mostly because of the multiplayer, 90% of game reviews I have seen say the single player aspect of the game sucks and i quote "multiplayer is where this game shines".

You don't need to erase that, if you find a metroid prime hunters community they will not be chatting about how awesome single player is, they'll be looking for matches.

This game was the first game to use voice chat and the first FPS to get it right for the DS, no previous DS FPS compares to this game, so if you want to erase the section then take a poll first and see what the general opinion on multiplayer is, I'm an elite hunter by the way what rank are you, do you even have the game? I bet you don't.

This game is the best 3d multiplayer game for the DS so deal with it. I bought mine used and my friend bought his used recently, even though the game is so old, and we don't play single player because it sucks, the other metroid games have awesome single player, this one doesn't and anyone who buys this buys it for the multiplayer.

Search metroid pime hunters on you tube, it's review that say the game sucks because they didn't try multiplayer, multiplayer matches, and friend codes, and only a very small fraction of single player stuff.

The only reason I played single player is to get the badge for beating the game and to unlock the hunters.

And now I blast you with the omega cannon, goodbye. 74.166.95.229 (talk) 17:22, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

FLC nominations and reviews

Hi, Gary. You may not be aware, but the new Featured list criteria was implemented Sunday 5 April, 00:56 (UTC) following two weeks of discussion at Wikipedia talk:Featured list criteria#New criterion discussion.

I've gone through the nominations and have noticed the following have received reviews from you, but no indication whether or not you support or oppose their promotion to WP:FL:

  1. Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of acquisitions by Juniper Networks/archive1 (List of acquisitions by Juniper Networks)

Please could you take the time to revisit the articles and candidate pages, check them against the new Featured list criteria, and indicate whether or not you support or oppose their promotion to WP:FL. It would be much appreciated as the nomination will not have to be kept open any longer than necessary.

Jennifer Hale reference

Hello, Gary King. You recently removed the Jennifer Hale reference from the Samus Aran article. I'm a bit puzzled as to why this video isn't a reliable source. Why does it matter where the video originated from when Jennifer Hale herself acknowledges she voiced Samus within the video? Thanks. -sesuPRIME talk • contribs 08:08, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello again, Gary King (can I call you Gary?). Are you suggesting the woman being interviewed in the video may not be Jennifer Hale? The interviewer, UltraNeko a.k.a. Sadie, has interviewed several voice actors that gamers are likely familiar with. In addition to Hale, she's interviewed David Hayter (see here) and Christopher Randolph (see here), and even hosted a fifteen minute improv session with Hale, Hayter, Randolph, Quinton Flynn, and Paul Eiding (see here). So, to suggest the Hale interview isn't authentic is to suggest all her videos are inauthentic. -sesuPRIME talk • contribs 03:09, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Good news. But I need to ask you if I can nominate the topic for the GT, or I'll have to wait for the result of the Metroid II FAC (feedback positive by now... but very few responses) so it can go straight to the FT. igordebraga 00:57, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

To Gary King,

I can only guess, but the reason my so-called contribution towards "Hugg Boots" was unproductive exists in the fact that no contribution was ever made or attempted. Yet, if you still feel disappointed in the outcome, let me know. After I look into your issue (for the first time), I will put something together that might help raise the issue to new heights. Metroid II reviews

Since it's your project and you might have a better idea on how to integrate them into the article, I'll just give you the two magazine reviews for Metroid II that I have. These pages were from scans done by Retromags, which are better than I could've done (and save me from having to pull my old mags apart). (Megaupload link) Nall (talk) 23:58, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Retromags has a bunch of gaming mags for download. It's volunteer run and doesn't have everything, but they add more over time and it's a very useful source for getting scans for any game pre-1999. Some of the downloads are pretty huge and you might have to slog through a ton of articles to find what you need, but they have a wiki that's supposed to catalog some of the content of each one. Almost all mags available have Rapidshare links, but if they don't you have to sign up and donate to get direct downloads. Magazines are saved as .cbr so you need Comic Book Reader to view them (or just change the extension to .rar and extract all the individual scans yourself). Good luck on your article! Nall (talk) 00:29, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm kinda swamped with housing/job issues for the summer right now (and at some blasted point in the future I wanna actually copyedit Star Trek: The Motion Picture and throw it at FAC), but when I have a chance I'll send you what I can scrounge up in the way of newspaper sources. --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 03:11, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Three more FLRCs of FLs you nominated, but once again, you won't be able to do much:

I see you removed a gallery from Fishing village. You referred to WP:IG, so I presume you think these images are "an indiscriminate collection". In fact they are anything but indiscriminate. They have been carefully selected from hundreds of possible images to show a wide spectrum of localities, time periods and types of villages, and each image has been captioned with specific information about this. The gallery captures, in a small space, more information than could be given in many paragraphs of text. --Geronimo20 (talk) 21:02, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Cleanup on Poker articles

I noticed you have been editing a lot of poker articles. I'm not sure if a discussion regarding this had taken place, I disagree with your cleanup as I think it makes these articles vastly more difficult to read. Everything is jumbled together and it is difficult to determine one thought from another. I think it should be paragraphed out. One line paragraphs are easier to read and more accessible to people. A discussion should be started regarding proper clean up (if it hasnt already). Valoem talk 21:28, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

I agree with that. Some articles are great like Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey, however the article on Vanessa Rousso for example is definately more difficult to read. Valoem talk 00:50, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

Hello, I hope you are doing well. I am sending you this message since you are a member of the GA WikiProject. I would like to invite you to consider helping with the GA sweeps process. Sweeps helps to ensure that the oldest GAs still meet the criteria, and improve the quality of GAs overall. Unfortunately, last month only two articles were reviewed. This is definitely a low point after our peak at the beginning of the process when 163 articles were reviewed in September 2007. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. All exempt and previously reviewed articles have already been removed from the list. Instead of reviewing by topic, you can consider picking and choosing whichever articles interest you.

We are always looking for new members to assist with the remaining articles, so if you are interested or know of anybody that can assist, please visit the GA sweeps page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. If only 14 editors achieve this feat starting now, we would be done with Sweeps! Of course, having more people reviewing less articles would be better for all involved, so please consider asking others to help out. Feel free to stop by and only review a few articles, something's better than nothing! Take a look at the list, and see what articles interest you. Let's work to complete Sweeps so that efforts can be fully focused on the backlog at GAN. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! GA Sweeps June update

Thanks to everyone's dedicated efforts to the GA Sweeps process, a total of 396 articles were swept in May! That more than doubles our most successful month of 163 swept articles in September 2007 (and the 2 articles swept in April)! I plan to be sending out updates at the beginning of each month detailing any changes, updates, or other news until Sweeps are completed. So if you get sick of me, keep reviewing articles so we can be done (and then maybe you'll just occasionally bump into me). We are currently over 60% done with Sweeps, with just over a 1,000 articles left to review. With over 40 members, that averages out to about 24 articles per person. If each member reviews an article a day this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. I know that may be asking for a lot, but it would allow us to complete Sweeps and allow you to spend more time writing GAs, reviewing GANs, or focusing on other GARs (or whatever else it is you do to improve Wikipedia) as well as finish ahead of the two-year mark coming up in August. I recognize that this can be a difficult process at times and appreciate your tenacity in spending time in ensuring the quality of the older GAs. Feel free to recruit other editors who have reviewed GANs in the past and might be interested in the process. The more editors, the less the workload, and hopefully the faster this will be completed. If you have any questions about reviews or the process let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 18:02, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Editing help

Gary,

I need to encroach on your expertise just a little. You were good enough to have removed the STUB tag on a page that I have been editing for a Japanese actress Hiroko Sato but there are a couple of things I don't know how to do safely. In the listing for STUB articles, the Hiroko Sato page is still listed as a STUB, the article priority is listed as low and neither reflect the amount of work done on the page recently.

I also need to know how to remove the empty photo box as it is doubtful that any of the photographic material available on the internet would comply with Wikipedia policy of privately owned and displayed with permission. If you have the time would you respond on the "Discussion page" for the topic "Hiroko Sato" ?

Is there a way to make the scroll bar only part of the width of the page and move it back up to the part of the text that references it?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 22:46, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Don't those changes conflict with Wikipedia:Accessibility#Scrolling_and_collapsible_sections?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 04:40, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

I guess this article will be ineligible for FAC. I don't think shortening it that much would help the readers who are able to access it.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 04:57, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Can you shrink the font. That might make the left to right scroll bars unnecessary.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 04:58, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Also, the current GAC is requesting a copyedit. I have done my best, but if you have a chance give it a run through.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 06:11, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
If you look at the image in the infobox, you can see that I rarely play tournaments with less than 45 players and usually play at 9-person tables. I will look for shorter examples though if we get complaints.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 18:03, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
If you know how to make the tournament summary a sidebar insert without the scrollbox, you could just chop it at 15 or 20 players and make the title Excerpted Tournament Summary.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 19:01, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

I've been having a problem with the gadget "Comments in Local Time." I checked the box to enable it in my preferences, and I also set my time zone under "Date and Time." However, I still see times in UTC. Is there anything else I need to do to make it work? 95j (talk) 22:08, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

For the fix at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)/Datestempprotectedsection; I tend to overthink things sometimes :). I note with some disappointment that you don't seem to be editing much these days; I hope you return to your normal production levels soon. Cheers, Dabomb87 (talk) 17:31, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. Look for PokerTracker back at GAC soon. I wrote it because it is the software that I use. I don't intend to switch software, although I am disappointed in the current state of development of PT3 (It does not import all of my 2005 tournament results yet). I don't intend to write an article about software that I don't use.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 18:30, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Bambifan protection

Hi. I haven't fully protected any articles. All I've done is semi-protect them against edits by new users. You should be good to go. If there are any fully protected articles, just contact the admin who issued the protection. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 05:24, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Gary, I just double-checked a couple of the titles you just mentioned. All I did was to protect them against new users. The blocks aren't admin-only, I assure you. I may have placed the wrong block template if anything, but that shouldn't keep you from editing the articles. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 05:54, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Looks as if we have a software bug. Sorry about that. I can unlock all of the Scooby-Doo articles or any others if you wish. Only takes a moment. That shouldn't be happening and I am sincerely sorry about the inconvenience. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 05:57, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Weird. I did check some and I'm seeing them as "block new and anonymous accounts." Any particular articles you'd like me to unblock for the time being? I can unblock more when I have a bit more time since I'm getting ready to log off. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 06:03, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, you got it. I just had another admin weigh in and he's seeing the same protection level. I'll start in with the Scooby-Doos for now and work on some more tomorrow. If you run into another of these blocks, please don't hesitate to let me know. I am really, really sorry for the unintended hassle. I'm only too happy to unblock them. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 06:08, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

  • OK, the Scooby-Doo articles are wide open and it looks as if I did indeed accidently place full protection on a couple of them. I promise to double-check the rest of those blocks I placed today. It's just that these juvenile-themed entertainment pieces are the targets of what is quite possibley the most persistent vandal I've ever had to deal with. He's bad enough IMO that I just created a separate LTA page for him. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 06:15, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

I sure do hear you and I've been thinking about the same thing for most of the evening. The really frequent target articles this guy has been most active on are already locked down. I spent 45 minutes blocking the latest round and wondered later why the heck I bothered. This is a really unusual case, but I honestly don't want to spend this kind of time blocking whatever he touches; it's become counterproductive and this hassle I've inadvertently put you through is proof. I'll just keep swatting the socks if and when they come in. His new LTA page is here if you'd like to get a better idea of what this individual is about. Thanks for the help and guidance. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 06:23, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Amazing Race Wikipedia Starts!

Hello, Shappy. This is a reminder that Amazing Race Wikipedia will start very soon. At 00.00 (or whereabouts), our host Firestorm will place the first Detour on your submissions page. Again, the Detour is a choice between two tasks; both members of the team choose one task and work together to complete it. multi-column templates

Hi Gary,

At User_talk:John_Vandenberg#Template:Divbegin I have been asked about Internet Explorer support for {{divbegin}}. While documenting this at Help:Columns, I noticed that you have created a similar template, {{colbegin}}, differing only in that it defaults to 2 columns. I've been doing a bit of additional research into what options we have, and if possible it would be good if we can find a solution that also works in IE, which neither of our templates do. {{Columns-start}} and {{multicol}} appear to work well in many browsers.

GA Sweeps July update

Thanks to everyone's dedicated efforts to the GA Sweeps process, a total of 290 articles were swept in June! Last month was our second most successful month in reviewing articles (after May). We are currently over 70% done with Sweeps, with just under 800 articles left to review. With nearly 50 members, that averages out to about 15 articles per person. If each member reviews an article every other day this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. This may sound difficult, but if everyone completes their reviews, Sweeps would be completed in less than two years when we first started (with only four members!). With the conclusion of Sweeps, each editor could spend more time writing GAs, reviewing at the backlogged GAN, or focusing on other GARs. Again, I want to thank you for using your time to ensure the quality of the older GAs. Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 17:48, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

pokerstars

FYI, I would not consider the bio on PokerStars of Chris to be a reliable source. I put the major poker sites as contigent reliability. They can be reliable, but when they are discussing their "team" then you have to treat it like a SPS. PokerStars wants to hype Chris because Chris is their posterboy. I would trust a bio on Chris more if it was from a rival site ;-)---Balloonman NO! I'm Spartacus! 22:04, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Gary! Given your extensive work on musician award lists (you have dozens of FLs on the subject to your name), I would greatly appreciate any advice you have for Alison Krauss' list which I am currently working on. The only difference I see (other than potentially missing non-win nominations for the non-Grammy awards, I haven't dug through looking for those yet) is I have the awards sorted by # of wins rather than alphabetically. Think I should shift that? Also, I snipped a few awards to keep the list reasonable, but I'd be interested if you think some or all of them are notable and should get tables:

1 Canadian Country Music Award
2 CMT Music Awards
2 Academy of Country Music Awards

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give! Staxringold talkcontribs 15:31, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the quick reply. I'll get right on both of those things. Do you know how to add awards properly to the Musician table? It would be nice if the awards were sorted alphabetically there along with the rest of the article, but using the custom award slots dumps them automatically after all named awards (so after Grammys). Staxringold talkcontribs 15:52, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
  • Thanks again for your notes, thought you might like to know I have now FLC'ed the list. Staxringold talkcontribs 00:45, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Also, if you're interested in updating your many awesome lists, I added an alt text option for the images in {{Infobox Musician Awards}} (just "| alt ="). Staxringold talkcontribs 00:28, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Semi-automated peer review script fixes

As you probably know, User:Dispenser has placed the semi-automated peer review script on the toolserver here. I note that you offered to maintain / fix the script and wondered if that offer still holds? If so I have some ideas and User talk:AndyZ has some more suggestions. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:03, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

The script still looks for the "Image" file name, not the new "File" file name, so if it could check for that and the ".jpg" or ".png" or .svg" and then give "the article needs more images" message. The script could also check for alt image text per WP:ALT. These are the two most pressing ideas I know, but there are more on AndyZ's talk page. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:51, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Sorry - I stopped doing the SAPRs every night as of August 1st and missed the fix. Thanks. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:03, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Don't you think it's a bit counterproductive on a high-visibility page to re-combine the lead into a too-long section, and then complain about your own action via the ugly {{toolong}} template? -- Yellowdesk (talk) 18:45, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

  • Please make a proper section for the discussion on the split, and state your argument there for others to respond to, or remove the split template. It's a courtesy to actually make a case, instead of just placing the template there for some other random party to pick up the responsibility and conversation on. -- Yellowdesk (talk) 19:04, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
  • The link fails because the section is misspelled, which is why I did not find it, and why most others will not either. -- Yellowdesk (talk)
  • I now see on further investigation that the "too long" family of templates, unlike the merge/split templates don't allow the editor to specify the particular section the discussion is occurring at. -- Yellowdesk (talk) 19:28, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

History of China Template

Hi Gary, I'm wondering what your motivation is for your recent changes to the size and title box of Template:History of China. It seems to me that the new version is not as good as the old one. It's narrower, but longer, and not as pretty, as there is now no 'title' box. Can we discuss the look of the template? thanks LK (talk) 04:45, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

The Zelda FT

Hey, I take it you're planning to replace The Legend of Zelda with List of The Legend of Zelda media in the FT, as we discussed before? rst20xx (talk) 19:25, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Hey, I'm referring to this one. I don't think using the list instead of the article changes which other articles need to be included in the topic one bit. The focus-narrowing from media to titles is comparable to the narrowing of discography articles to just albums. Personally I think this topic is a little bit iffy in that it only includes games Nintendo considers official canon, and not all the games Nintendo actually had a hand in making, but this holds true no matter what main article is used, and if you use the list, it not only brings the topic more in line with the majority of other topics which do use such lists, it also gets the lead back to good or featured, something that should have happened by now - rst20xx (talk) 10:08, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Facebook

Under the Security category for the above topic it should be made clear that Facebook does not use a secure internet protocol for users logging in.

They do not use https also called SSL protocol. This means that passwords are sent in clear text over the internet. This is a serious security breach and might explain why so many accounts are hacked.

This makes Facebook a very dangerous site, from a security point of view, to join and visit.

RE: Flag icons at All Hope Is Gone

If the flagicon shouldn't be used on Wikipedia, when why is a template & why is it used on countless articles, usually in the infobox? Flagicons are more commonly used on mulitple county release dates for albums than <insert country wiki article here/>. ɠu¹ɖяy¤ • ¢  19:55, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

If you look at Template:Flagicon, you will see all the flags included alt text & if you click on the flag, it links you to the article about that country. ɠu¹ɖяy¤ • ¢  20:03, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
The flag icons over the text, in my opinion, provide a quicker reference. See the small text, draws more attention due to it being smaller & more of a strain on the eyes. There is no guideline or policy directly stating that one should be over the other for album release dates, it just looks more encyclopedic (or higher quality) with the flags over the small text for infoboxes. ɠu¹ɖяy¤ • ¢  20:20, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
Well with article being an album, I looked at the best WikiProject for an answer, WikiProject Albums. The only true discussion about this concern was this one. It was a lot to read & there isn't a clean answer but it appears to more of a lean towards flagicons over any other alternative, but this discussion was was back in 2007. I really wish Albums would make a clean & concise determination of which is correct for this project. But still after everything, I still believe the flagicons are a better approach for this. ɠu¹ɖяy¤ • ¢  20:40, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Small vs Large

Hi, Source of confusion: I typed small in my edit summary before when I meant large... sorry.

Key items: Crucifixion & Resurrection of Jesus should really fit on one line and teh Rites section should take only 2 lines to optimize Real Estate. Your last template actually looks pretty good on different browsers, yet I would suggest making the font still 90% of what it is to be sure it works on moire systems without overspilling. You can do that yourself if you like so it does not look like we are in an edit war. Cheers. History2007 (talk) 18:16, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

I think it fits now, but to be prudent, it would be best to reduce the font a little still. History2007 (talk) 18:30, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I think we can just leave it as such, although it would look better at 90% of default. I may experiment with the look later. Now I am busy with a few things. Cheers History2007 (talk) 18:56, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

About Internet and the image

Hi! I want to discuss about that image on Internet that we disagree about. Admittedly the caption was not enlightening, but the image is about the Interface Message Processor: The Interface Message Processor (IMP) was the packet-switching node used to connect computers to the original ARPANET in the late 1960s and 1970s. It was the first generation of what is known as a router today. -basically, it is the first (or one of the first) computers ever being connected to the predecessor of the current Internet, and Leonard Kleinrock was the one sending one of the very first messages.

As such I think it's relevant to the article. What do you think of putting the image back, with a thorough caption? Thanks! (You can answer here, I keep your talk page on my watchlist for the time being) --Cyclopia (talk) 21:53, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot

Could you let me know in more detail what change you are requesting in the WP 1.0 bot? The bot does not handle biography projects differently than any other projects, so just changing the template on talk pages should not require any changes to the bot code. If, at any time, you would like me to do another run of just the biography projects to update their statistics, please let me know. — Carl (CBM · talk) 21:40, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

The talk pages were not edited but the WPBiography template was edited, and that changed the categories of the pages. The bot just looks at the categories. Now there is no importance category for the Biography_(core) project on those talk pages, so the "Top-Importance" rating that was previously there was removed. The only page that is different is Talk:Philip II of Spain, which was apparently vandalized at the time. I ran the bot again to update the Biography_(core) project, and it did re-insert the Phillip_II article ([5]) — Carl (CBM · talk) 23:02, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Do you mean to say that this is not good enough:

In his reply, Smith said that the argument was "bogus". He also objected that the timing was "ludicrous". He finally stated that the motivation was "questionable".[67]

but that we must use:

In his reply, Smith said that the argument was "bogus".[67] He also objected that the timing was "ludicrous".[67] He finally stated that the motivation was "questionable".[67]

? I don't think it makes the quotes the slightest bit more verifiable.  --Lambiam 22:20, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Hey there. I do not mind the removal of the link (see here: [7]) but may I ask why the link was removed? 2010 WikiCup Signups Reconfirmation!

To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.

It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:

  • Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.

MTV VMA controversy in a heading of the Taylor Swift article

Hello, Gary King. You seem to do good work here, but I objected to one of your recent edits on the Taylor Swift article and reverted it. Is there any valid reason you removed MTV VMA controversy out of the heading of the Fearless section? The controversy generated notable interest, and clearly made her even more famous, and should be presented in that section's title. Aside from that, readers are going to be looking for it, and presenting it in a heading's title makes it easier. A fan of hers or someone knowing which project she was working on at the time would automatically know where to look, but not people who have heard about her or the incident at random. This is no different than presenting Chris Brown's 2009 (and so far only) controversy in a heading combined with one of his albums. These sections are not just about their albums but also about their controversies.

If you tend to revert me on this matter, I will try to get other editors to weigh in on this so that we can better achieve consensus about it. Flyer22 (talk) 20:53, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

This passed, so your FT(s) need more articles featured by 1 September 2010, or else they will become GTs - rst20xx (talk) 21:02, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

FA-Team revival

I've made a proposal to bring the FA-Team out of inactivity—with a mission a bit different than we're used to. This is just a generic note I'm sending to members asking for their input. Cheers, Mm40 (talk) 01:29, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow!

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! Garden, iMatthew, J Milburn, and The ed17 19:18, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
