Hello! I am currently working on StarKid Productions, and it one of the tags on the page is

Hello Shalor, I am trying to add a few citations to an article and I have noticed that one of them will not add. I'm wondering if the website https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1877042813039608 will be allowed on Wikipedia as a reference. Frich25 (talk) 18:43, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi Shalor, For one of our sources, the only place it is published publicly is on a Facebook page. Is this okay to use as a citation? Or should we cite it in another way? Please get back to me when you can, thank you! Ophmac (talk) 22:05, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Help on sources

Hello, I am currently working on the Lady Pink article, and I was planning on listing off her most notable paintings and other meduims off in bullet points under her career section, each with their own subsection. The issue is I am getting the information from 1 source (her website in which she lists the medium, date, and other information for each work). When citing, will this be a problem? Should I avoid citing each work one at a time with the same source? Is there another way to do this process if it is a problem?

-Thanks

Hello.

I need help with moving my sandbox to the main wiki page of my assigned artist. How do I do that?

--Prissy114 (talk) 23:35, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Priscilla Escobar

Hi Shalor. This student editor belongs to a Wiki Ed course you're helping out with. I've removed a non-free image from their User:Abdulazizjalthani/sandbox, but they re-added it. This happens quite a bit and I left a template on their user talk page about it. However, I thought you probably are better at explaining things like this to students; so, I didn't go into too much detail.

My personal opinion here, is that the non-free use of File:Hitler, Beast of Berlin FilmPoster.jpeg wouldn't be justified for this type of non-free use even if it was an article; movie tends to be OK when it's used for primary identification purposes at the top of or in the main infobox in a stand-alone article about the file in question, but other uses tend to be much harder to justify. Generally, there needs to be sourced critical commentary about the poster itself (not only the film) or some other quite strong contextual reason for it to be used per WP:NFC#CS; simply mentioning the movie by name is usually not enough per item 6 of WP:NFC#UUI.

Since this is still a draft, however, the editor might plan on adding such content at a later date; if they do, they will need to provide a speparate, specific non-free use rationale per WP:NFCC#10c explaining why. They shouldn't, however, re-add the file (even after adding such content about the poster) until the draft has been approved as an article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:40, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

questions regarding an edit

Hi Shalor,

I posted on your talk page and your answer was very helpful. I went back on to the York Catholic page and not only were my edits gone, but everything under the sports section was taken off, stuff that had been up prior to my edits. Should I try to to rewrite that stuff and add in more information or just leave it alone?

I don't want to mess it up even more.

Help with removing sources from reference list

Hi Shalor,

I'm currently working on the Willem Arondeus page as part of a WikiEdu class, and I've been trying to improve the article by added inline citations for the sources that already exist in the references. While looking through the list, I've found two of the sources don't seem to relate to Arondeus, and because of that, I wanted to remove them. However, I'm not sure how to remove them from the reference list, as it is a template and I am not very well versed in code. I detailed this problem on the Talk:Willem_Arondeus page as well.

Fixing a wrong sig

Hi Shalor, when you forget you're logged into your other account and sign a response with it, as you did here (diff), you don't have to go into explanations about it, you can just re-login to your WMF account, edit the response, remove the old sig, and readd your '~~~~'. This is perfectly acceptable per WP:REDACT. Exception: when someone has already responded to your original comment, or a lot of time has elapsed. But otherwise, feel free to simply change the sig to the correct one; it's easier, and faster. And probably less confusing for the student, as well. Win-win. Hello! My name is Isa (Isamouse79), and I am a student at the George Washington University, writing in the "George_Washington_University/UW1020_M82_(Spring)" group for my writing class. Together with my group members, SocksOfDeath and Syndeycurrie5, I am working on editing and enhancing the currently-existing Wikipedia article on Dr. Elizabeth Gould Bell (titled "Elizabeth Bell (Doctor)").

Currently, we are working on translating our research into "Family and Marriage," "Education," "Professional Life," and "Political Activism" sections, to ensure we have narrated all of the important parts of Gould Bell's life as effectively as possible. We have not yet finished each section, but have split up the work and our trying our best to be as comprehensive as possible. Some of our work may overlap currently, but we will consolidate and condense our writings together later in the project, in the upcoming weeks. I personally, have the task of helping write the "Family and Marriage" and "Professional Life" sections. As of now, my teammates and I have not yet posted to the original Wikipedia article's "Talk" page. We will do so, however. As per our professor's guidelines, we are making sure that what we have to show to the original article's Talk page is our best work.

Currently, I would love your feedback on my work so far. Do you think that it is comprehensive enough? Are there any syntax errors or bulky sentences that I should fix? I have gotten feedback from my peers that I should include more information about the meeting of Elizabeth Bell and her husband Hugo. However, I have not been able to find such information from my sources, and the sources that my teammates and I found encompass the majority of the sources can be found about Elizabeth Gould Bell from libraries and on the internet. How do you suggest I address this concern-- should I simply state that it is not known how Elizabeth and Hugo met?If there is anything else that I have not mentioned but you think I should fix about my article about it, please let me know!

Thank you so much for your help,

User:CalebPhelps99

Hi again Shalor. I think CalebPhelps99 is another one of your students. He's trying to write an article about a video game at User:CalebPhelps99/sandbox, but he's having problems with images like File:The Heist.jpg. Caleb might not fully understand that any screenshot he thinks he's "creating" is almost certainly to be copyrighted by someone else, unless he's the actual designer/creator of game. FWIW, in an article about a video game, one non-free image of the product packaging is generally allowed for primary identification purposes and then one in-game screenshot is generally allowed for representative purposes in the gameplay section; any thing beyond that becomes much harder to justify and almost always requires some specific sourced critical commentary about the screenshot for it to meet WP:NFC#CS usually because of some technical/controversial aspect about it that received covered in reliable sources. Non-free screenshots are not really going to be accepted just to "show" plot points or certain features, especially redundant screenshots. It appears (at least first glance) that Caleb has otherwise done quite a good job with the draft outside of the images, but the images are the things which are going to create problems if he continues to upload them without proper licensing. Anyway, the image notifications are going to start adding up on Caleb's user talk if he continues to try and upload/add images to his sandbox; so, it might be a good idea to suggest he focus on the other stuff and leave the images until after the draft has been approved as an article. I was going to suggest this to him directly, but I wanted to run it by you first since you have more experience at interacting with these students. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:49, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Need help request from Carlapicasso (talk)

Hello Shalor,

I hope this note finds you well, I am part of Professor Azar's class at the George Washington University. I am working on an article titled "Social Media in the Fashion Industry" with Mia Schlidt and Egbe Imariagbe. These changes are provided in my sandbox and in italics are just my thoughts on how i am structuring my contribution. I have not yet proposed these changes to the talk space but I will soon. I was wondering if my changes were good enough to add to this article.

Thank you very much,

Hello. I am Sally Fried and I am in Professor Azar's University writing class. My group includes me, Lara Inal, Charlie Abrams, and Franol Hulufe. We are researching political action on the topic of climate change. As a group, we have each chosen sections of the wikipedia article, "Individual and Political Action on Climate Change". I have not yet posted this to the talk page but I will. I would like your feedback on the structure of my work and the amount of detail and information in it, as well as my use of internal links Thanks!

Hello Shalor,

I hope you are doing well. I am Jason Kung, a freshman at the George Washington University, and I have enjoying learning more about Wikipedia through this project. Christal Cao, Samuel Zhao, and Elaine Ko are in my UW project group, and we are editing the Wikipedia page of Fast Food in China. However, as I am so used to using persuasive language in my writings, I need help with checking that my language is unbiased and neutral. Any other feedback would be extremely helpful as well. Thanks a lot!

Dear Shalor,

My name is Barbora Lehká and I am a student of UW1020 M66 with prof. Azar. My other group members are Rebecca Lee, Montana Nelson and Morgan Atherton and we are editting the article on Feminism in China. I wrote a section about the Feminist Five, I recieved feedback from my peers which I incorporated. I have not yet posted this to the talk page but I will when our professor tells us to do so.

I would like to ask you for your feedback mainly on the structure of the article. Specifically sentence structure, how the text flows and if it is written how wiki articles should be.

Thank you very much for your help Barbora Lehka Barborale (talk) 21:18, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello my name is Lara Inal. I am currently in the process of writing out my parts of the wiki page my group chose to edit. The other members of my group are Sally Fried, Charlie Abrams, and Franol Hulufe. I have not yet posted to this talk page but I plan on doing so going forward. Some things I would like for you to look at is the objectivity of my writing. I think I have most everything else down it is just difficult for me to write in a manner that is not argumentative. Hi Shalor, my name is Madison and I am in Professor Azar's class. I am in a group with Cara Lee, Sam Wolf, and Graham Hurley. I have not posted my work on the talk page yet. Currently I'm looking for feedback on if the work in my sandbox is objective or not, and whether or not my sources are good enough. I have a long way to go on this project, but if you have any helpful feedback that would be great!

Thanks,

Need help request from Oliviaohearn (talk)

Hello.

My name is Olivia O'Hearn and I am in Professor Azar's University Writing class #Academia: Researching, Authoring, and Access in the Digital Age at The George Washington University.

I am working on the Arms Trafficking page with Nick Hudson (Rapidrider) and Casey O'Connor (Casey518). I am currently still working on my part of the page. I will be adding information on arms trafficking in Europe that will go between the information on Africa and the market value. I have not yet posted this to the talk page, but will be soon.

I need help with deciding on what information about arms trafficking in Europe I should add more about/focus on and if I am using the correct writing style for wikipedia work.

Thank you for your help.

Hello.

I'm Sophie Ballak, working on the article about postmodern feminism with Asiah White and Dayla Durandisse. I am pretty much finished with the sections in my sandbox, and have not submitted the changes to the talk page, but will do so after your review. I would like to know specifically what you think about my section on French feminism and whether I need to change some sentence structures, elaborate on certain topics, or include more sources and things of that sort. Any feedback would be incredible and I thank you for taking the time to look over my sandbox. Sophieb905 (talk) 03:05, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Ms. Shalor,

My name is Xavia, I am a student in Professor Azar's class at GW, and the Wikipedia article my group and I are editing is "Acoustics". My group members are Caitlin and Alexis. In my sandbox, I have been working on a subsection called "Psychological Effects of Acoustics", where I have been describing how acoustics has cognitive influences on people. If you do not mind, can you let me know if it is not enough information or if I need to expand any ideas? Also, I feel like I am not writing it the way most Wikipedia articles are written in that I think mine reads like a class essay almost. Could you give me some tips on how to fix this and how to make my edits more direct? I also want to mention I have not yet published what is in my sandbox.

Thank you and any advice you can give me on how to make this edit Wikipedia worthy is very appreciated!

Gender Equality and Sports

There has been a lot of attention given to transgender females competing in girl's sports at the high school level. This article details the controversy:

--SocksOfDeath (talk) 06:20, 9 April 2019 (UTC) SocksOfDeath (talk) 06:20, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Shalor (Wiki Ed). This appears to have been mistakenly moved to another page in the username space by it's creator Jolynnperez, who seems to be one of the students you're helping. It might be better to move this to the draft namespace instead and submit it for WP:AFC review or merge some of the content into one of the already existing articles on polygamy, Utah or Mormonism since it kind of has a WP:CONTENTFORK feel to it, but that's my personal opinion. Regardless, the page is likely going to end up tagged for speedy deletion per WP:FAKEARTICLE if it's not moved back to the Jolynnperez's sandbox, or to the draft namespace. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:11, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

JJMC89 moved the page back to the student’s sandbox, but the student then re-moved the page once again; this time to Utah Polygamy and Law Since 2000. Putting aside opinions as to whether this is a content fork, there’s some MOS issues that need to be sorted. The title capitalization seems wrong which might mean another move is needed, while the first subsection’s title and article’s title probably shouldn’t be identical and the capitalization of the remaining section headings also needs tweaking. These are relatively straightforward tweaks, but currently there’s also no real lead for the article and there also be the need for some re-writing of other parts as well, which is a more significant change. I’m not sure whether the student understands that their work is pretty much fair game for anyone to edit now that they’ve moved their work to the mainspace, while anyone trying to clean things up may not be aware that their efforts may directly impact the grade the student receives. — Marchjuly (talk) 20:37, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) @Marchjuly: wrote,

I certainly hope you’re mistaken about that, or that I’m mistaken in my interpretation of it, because this is still the encyclopedia that anyone can edit. If professors are unable to grade student efforts without a hands-off policy on the part of the other 5.6 million editors, then something is rotten in Denmark. If their article is in Draft namespace, it’s still fair game but I might give a student some leeway, but I won’t promise it. If they want to be left alone to edit, they should use a User draft, or leave it in their sandbox. We follow WP policies here, not those of universities or professors. Mathglot (talk) 02:31, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
No not mistaken, and this is one of the reasons why I think it's not really a good idea for these students to move their own drafts to the mainspace. There've been cases in the past where such pages utimately ended up deleted because the content simply wasn't suited for the mainspace. It seems that some of these class projects set "moving the draft" to the mainspace as one ot the things they want the students to do. Some teachers apparently do grade on all the steps followed to reach the final submitted draft, not just the final draft; even so, I personally think it would be better for the students to submit the final draft for AfC review instead of moving it themselves, but the time it takes to do this often doesn't not fit the schedule of the course. The WikiEd advisors try to make this clear to the students and teachers participating in these programs, but they can only do so much. This has come up before at Wikipedia:Education noticeboard, but it can be tricky to deal with if the teacher isn't very familiar with Wikipedia since most of the students are going to look to their teacher, not the Wikipedia community, for adivce and it's the teacher, not the Wikipedia community, doing the actual grading. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:07, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi Marchjuly, Mathglot, thank you for letting me know about this! We encourage instructors to grade students on their work and effort as opposed to what sticks. By this I mean that they would look in the article history to see the student's original work or they would try to get a copy of the material to grade if it was removed from Wikipedia. We definitely do not want live student work to go without being edited and improved, if it is necessary. I'm actually going to move this back to their userspace, as this looks to be redundant to the existing article on Current state of polygamy in the Latter Day Saint movement, as the article looks to be predominantly about this specific topic as opposed to general polygamy. There are also a number of issues to boot, which I'll address with the student while also warning them not to move the page live again. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:58, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
    • Thank you for taking a look at this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:51, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello. My name is Amaya Ruiz and I am currently in the process of editing and adding information to my wikipedia section for Russian Fairy Tales. I am in a group with three other members, Daniela Mastronardi, Doug Sitt, and Marissa Lazarus. I have yet to post in the talk page, though once I make the final edits on my section I would like to.

I would appreciate if you could offer feedback on my writing, but more specifically my history section. I would like to add more information, though I do not want to overload it with unnecessary details. If you could offer any critiques that would help me build the section I would appreciate it!

Nowiki tag?

Hello Shalor,

Thanks for helping us with our research lab, we really appreciate it! I moved an article draft out of my sandbox (Neuroprivacy), but deleted most of it as I only wanted to uploaded my lead section to the mainspace. Later, another user undid my deletion, which resulted in my entire article being reuploaded to the mainspace. The same user added my article to the "Neuroscience" and "Privacy" categories, and also tagged my article with the "nowiki" tag. I think my article being reinstated and added to categories is a good thing, but do you have an idea of what the "nowiki" tag means? I tried looking it up but wasn't sure exactly what it meant. Thank you so much!
