Saturday January 16: Wikipedia Day NYC 2016

You are invited to join us at New York University for Wikipedia Day NYC 2016, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of Wikipedia 15, the project's global 15th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

10:00am - 7:00 pm at NYU ITP Tisch School of the Arts, 721 Broadway (between Waverly and Washington Place)

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 17:57, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Happy New Year, Shearonink!

Lieutenant General George Washington

I'd have no objections; I agree, the current title could be a bit confusing. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:15, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

Which of the following do you think makes more sense/is more in line with WP guidelines:
  • "Lieutenant General George Washington (1860 sculpture)" <-since there are so many sculptures of Washington
  • "Lieutenant General George Washington (sculpture)" <-less length, more pithy
Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 01:18, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
The Smithsonian renders the statue in SIRIS (the Smithsonian Institution Research Information System) as "Lieutenant General George Washington (sculpture)". 01:26, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
I lean towards the second, myself, since I don't believe we have any articles on other statues of the title. That can always be put right later if need be. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:28, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
In the spirit of BRD, I am posting on the article's talk page that I am going to change the title. Other than Move-ing the old title to the new one, do I need to do anything else?...(keeping in mind possible double-redirects, etc). Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 01:50, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
I don't believe so. I think that should be all. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:52, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

My edit

The name was actually Renée. It was constructive as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LXA43 (talkcontribs) 17:54, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Actually no, her middle name wasn't "Renee". "née" is used to delineate what the wife's last name/birth-name was before she gets married. Take a look at the following references:

The Special Barnstar
I just wanted to give thanks to you for clearing up the dispute at User:GoneAwayNowAndRetired/Wikipedia is broken and failing. I also wanted you to know that I thought it was an essay in userspace -- it was actually the user page. (Also, it was cleared up when you removed the essay template.) Editing technique help

Hey Shearonink. I'm mortified and shamed by your "helping hand." Guffaw. Guffaw...ROTFLMAO! Many thanks for the helping hand. You deserve the "Random Acts" Barnstar! Regards Tapered (talk) 07:39, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

If you wish to change what you wrote above, just strike through the parts you don't feel are applicable any more. That way, you preserve the sense of the post and its subsequent responses while also showing your thoughts have changed. You use the code <s> at the beginning of what you want to strike and then put </s> at the end. If I were you I would add another message below this one, saying that your thoughts have changed with whatever the appropriate explanation is and that is why you have struck through your comments. I would ask that you not delete your original post or alter it to change its meaning, because then the responses and their timeline gets mangled. Hope that helps, Shearonink (talk) 04:58, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

File:Monir Portrait-exh ph021.jpg

On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support.

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for your determination and dedication to help the encyclopedia grow. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

Editor Worm That Turned submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week and Sainsf seconded it:

I nominate Shearonink to be Editor of the Week for his hard work on Wikipedia. Shearonink has been around a long time (20K edits, 36% to articles) and talks a lot of sense, but hasn't had much recognition of those facts. He used to live in at the IRC help channel, helping out those who needed it and that used to be a lot of people (I don't really go in there any more, so I can't talk for more recent events). Ever since his friends have started leaving, he seems to have slightly disappeared. I wanted him to know that it's not just his friends who appreciate who he is! It is all of Wikipedia.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

Achom editor

I saw that too. I was asked if I could change the conviction to read "In 2000, prior to his involvement in the investment sector Achom and several others fell foul of the UK’s department of trade and industry and a conviction was secured against him and four other defendants at Southwark crown court in 2000. Subsequently, he was disqualified from holding UK directorships for eleven years."

Sound familiar? I turned that gig down as it was totally against guidelines, looks like someone took it though. I posted on his talk page a few days ago, saw he edited afterwards, so when I get home tonight I will have to go to COIN when I can post from my laptop and not my phone.  MPJ-DK  18:21, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

  • until the coi notice has been processed that editor is still around and can undo any work you.put in. Once he is dealt with it can be removed, until then I believe it is only fair to tell people to watch out for incorrect or misleading content.  MPJ-DK  23:14, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
If you respond to posts on the pages they are posted on, it keeps the discussion all in one place. Hard to keep track if discussions are fragmented.
The notice could have been placed after I was done - I should be out of the page in maybe 10 minutes. I have no issues with it being placed on the article, but I do have an issue with it being placed on the article in the middle of an overhaul/editing process. Moving on - I'll be done at the Achom article shortly and this will all be moot. Shearonink (talk) 23:31, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
If you're following this thread, User:MPJ-DK, I left an apology on your talk page. That tag didn't matter in the end. Shearonink (talk) 00:15, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
  • Your comment makes a lot more sense in that context, totally get it. It is all good.  MPJ-DK  02:52, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

IRC help needed...

Anyone watching my talkpage - I can't seem to remember my password for IRC. Is there any way to recover my nick? I signed up so long ago, I can't remember... I do like to have that plus sign next to my name in "help"... Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 15:59, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

....See ^^^ above. Is there any way to recover a lost password to IRC? I'm still me, just haven't been in there in so long I can't remember what my password is... Yes, yes, I know that technically IRC isn't actually part of WP but am hoping someone knows the answer... Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 23:10, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

This isn't much of a Wikipedia question. You can ask at #freenode connect; people there may know how to recover a password (or whether it's impossible). Since you apparently already had a Wikipedia cloak, you can probably also get it transferred to a new registered nick if you have to go that route. Huon (talk) 23:29, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
I thought so. The age-old Catch-22...WP uses IRC extensively but IRC isn't really part of WP etc., etc. I wonder if there are any WP-associated/chan-ops? Anyone know?...ah but yes, I have to ask that question and hopefully get an answer on IRC/freenode. Thanks anyway. Shearonink (talk) 23:41, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Just in case you missed, it she died on Sunday 24 July. - 220 of Borg 14:19, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Oh that's sad. I couldn't find any references or news about it when it first appeared in the article and did a couple of different searches (you know...name death, name obituary and so on). Surprised the news hadn't appeared in Variety/Billboard/Hollywood Reporter/LA Times yet... I mean, if it was I sure couldn't find it at the time. When the IP added it to her article they didn't provide a reference. Sad to hear it's true, Miss Nixon was a great talent and, from everything I've heard, a wonderful person and great mentor. Yes, it took a while to be sourceable. I just stumbled upon it actually. The name rang a a bell and, as is my habit, checked for a WP page about her. The source was already there actually, added[1] by 194.69.14.78 (talk · contribs), but not 'cited'. So I just added some appropriate text, cited properly, and so it goes. I once found a professor who had been dead for months, but apparently no one on WP noticed. I even emailed his University(?) to check that he was the person who died, source was a bit ambiguous - 220 of Borg 15:21, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Shearonink. the Marni Nixon article does not use the citation templates. Instead it uses manual formatting, which I find preferable because it dispenses with the unnecessary coding. When someone added the ref you mentioned with the template formatting, I converted it to manual formatting per WP:CITEVAR, which says: "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style ... without first seeking consensus for the change. ... If the article you are editing is already using a particular citation style, you should follow it. ... [A]void ... adding citation templates to an article that already uses a consistent system without templates". -- Ssilvers (talk) 03:25, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, I'm just not used to seeing cite templates being converted to manual. Citation templates are useful in that everything is laid-out and clearly-labeled. WP:CITEVAR does state "... if all or most of the citations in an article...fail to provide needed bibliographic data – such as the name of the source, the title of the article or web page consulted, the author (if known), the publication date (if known), and the page numbers (where relevant) – ... and can be changed freely to insert such data." I personally find it confusing to not have the information labeled but to each his own. Cheers, Shearonink (talk) 03:59, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Presidency of Thomas Jefferson

Hi Shearonink,

My edits of Presidency of Thomas Jefferson, in which the edits of the anonymous user with the IP address 69.87.223.166 and "Daveisedit" (who are the same person) were reverted, were made to keep the article as factual as possible. Their edits were made as a joke, but I did not find them funny and know they misinform any viewers of this page.

Now that the page has been locked, I am requesting that you revert to the page with revision 744140003.

Cyprus3 (talk) 01:12, 14 October 2016 (UTC)cyprus3

I am sorry you were caught up in the flurry of vandalism from the two or three various editors who were vandalizing that article earlier today. I am not sure how you would know that "their edits were made as a joke" and that these various IP-editors & the named editor "are the same person". In any case the article is now fine since I have removed the last bit of vandalism and does not need to be reverted to any previous state. Shearonink (talk) 02:04, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer granted

Hello Shearonink. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. — xaosflux Talk 19:22, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter (November 2016)

Hello Shearonink,
Breaking the back of the backlog
We now have 812 New Page Reviewers! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog. Now it's time for action.
Mid July to 01 Oct 2016

If each reviewer does only 10 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
Let's get that over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

Second set of eyes

Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work. Read about it at the new Monitoring the system section in the tutorial.

Getting the tools we need - 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey: Please vote

With some tweaks to their look, and some additional features, Page Curation and New Pages Feed could easily be the best tools for patrollers and reviewers. We've listed most of what what we need at the 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey. Voting starts on 28 November - please turn out to make our bid the Foundation's top priority. Please help also by improving or commenting on our Wishlist entry at the Community Wishlist Survey. Many other important user suggestions are listed at at Page Curation.

Question about an old CSD

I was looking over some of my edits and logs and came across User:Nicole Haddad/sandbox. I had nom'ed this as a CSD/G2 since the User does not exist but you removed the CSD Template and then created the User account with this template: [2]. But, the User still does not exist, this "User sandbox" was created by User:Tysmooth... Was wondering if you could tell me why the CSD was removed/declined. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 04:17, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

U2 is only for when the user doesn't exist, i.e. nobody's ever registered that precise name as an account. My edit summary is copied from the logs (see Special:Log/Nicole_Haddad), which show that such an account had been registered seventeen minutes before the page was created. I wasn't the one who created it; you can tell that it was registered by someone new because if it had been created by someone with an account, it would have said "[username 1] created account Nicole Haddad". So basically, the criterion doesn't apply because the user existed. Nyttend (talk) 04:44, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Nyttend: OK...that makes some sense. I had been looking at who actually created the page, the page's edit history (User:Tysmooth at 18:35 on the same day User: Nicole Haddad was created). I did notice that there is similar content within the editing history of User:Tysmooth and quite a few apparent throwaway accounts - all probably created by the fairly-young editor.
So. Even though User: Nicole Haddad has never made an edit, this is their sandbox? Does this draft-table/"sandbox" get to exist for perpetuity or is there any category that would appropriately allow this content to be deleted? I'd like to know in case I run into a similar situation in the future. Thanks. Shearonink (talk) 05:17, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
It gets to exist in perpetuity, unless (1) you take it to WP:MFD [although I don't see the point of that, since it's not hurting anything], or (2) you find some way that it's harmful, in which case it can be speedy deleted. Since there are good situations in which one user could create a page in another user's userspace, we would be unwise to have a speedy criterion for such a situation. Nyttend (talk) 05:21, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, doesn't harm Wikipedia...looks like a case of throwaway accounts created by a new editor as they were editing around the place. I'll make sure to check Special Logs if I come across a similar situation in the future. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 05:29, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Re: PPW GAR

Thank you for your comment on the Pontius Pilate's wife GAR. I had completely forgotten about it until I checked it just now for another reason. I thought it had been closed months ago, and was surprised to see someone commented on as late as Dec29.

Anyway, regarding your comment that it could be renamed to "cultural depictions of Pontius Pilate's wife", I agree that while the current article is grossly unbalanced, I think renaming it would be a bad idea. She is a saint in several Christian traditions (not the ones that produced the literary works emphasized in our article currently, mind you) and she is emphasized in several (non-canonical) early Christian works.

The fact that she's only mentioned in one sentence of the NT isn't really relevant, since plenty of first-century figures important in later Christianity (and figures who probably were important in first-century Christianity) are barely mentioned or not mentioned at all in the NT. Thecla, for example, is not mentioned anywhere in the NT, but she was the protagonist of another work of early Christian literature that was very popular among early (proto-orthodox) Christians and probably predated some of the later NT texts (like 2 Peter).

Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact L235 if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Walt Disney World Railroad good article status

I adjusted the rolling stock table so that the notes column is fixed to 20% of the table's width. Let me know how it looks on your end. Jackdude101 (Talk) 01:48, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

I got rid of the "In service" column. This is actually a good long-term change, as it will decrease the urge by amateur editors to constantly update this criteria whenever they hear new rumors from blogs and forums on which locomotives are working and not working (it's almost impossible to get up-to-date info like this from formal publications and Disney pretty much never gives out these kinds of details). I increased the notes column width from 20% to 25%, as well. Also, the reason why there are no notes for the No. 1 locomotive is because I did not come across anything of note about it specifically while doing my research. Jackdude101 (Talk) 02:23, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

I did one other change to the table: I combined the "Builder" and "Builder number" columns into one column. It's mentioned more than once in the article that all of the WDWRR's locomotives were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works anyway. Jackdude101 (Talk) 03:16, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

(edit conflict)User:Jackdude101 I know this is Huffington Post but it mentions that the Broggie & Walt ran together in Mexico for 40 years and are still running together. "These two locomotives were built side by side in 1925 by Baldwin Locomotive works for Ferrocarriles Unidos de Yucatan. They worked side by side in Mexico for 40 years, and today they still run on the same tracks together."
  • On Page 331 of Michael Broggie's book, he says that the Walter E. Disney" is the tallest of the locomotives at 11ft/11 inches.
  • On Page 322, (and this is alluded to in the article) Engine #1 & #3 are identical twins under the different paint jobs.
Maybe those bits could fill out the Notes section for #1. Shearonink (talk) 03:28, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
A note for locomotive No. 1 has been added to the table. It's also already mentioned that the No. 1 and No. 3 are similar in the No. 3 note. Jackdude101 (Talk) 04:00, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
I know it was mentioned for #3. I kind of thought it was funny that #1 was identical. But Walt's engine is the tallest. Shearonink (talk) 04:14, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
