Disambiguation link notification for April 21

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Warren G. Harding, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page American Heritage (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

What you said

Uh, yeah. I only bothered to be like "WTF" afterward. I'd carry on longer, but seems I've found me real work right now. Cheers. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 02:41, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

It's cool. Your edit summaries actually made me laugh, any editor who's stuck around Wikipedia long enough has stepped in it and had some "WTF" moments. Took me forever to figure out what the vandal had done. I just couldn't figure out how someone could go from posting innocuous apparent vandalism to over 11,000 bits of text...something just didn't seem right about it. What I finally did was search for one of their headers and when it showed up twice... Heh, of course I could have just looked at the Table of Contents first and saved myself a lot of trouble. Shearonink (talk) 03:12, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Edit summaries

I don't see what needs to be oversighted to be honest, as far as I can tell it's a non-offensive internet meme... GiantSnowman 18:20, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Ok, I was thinking of its meaning as a synonym for 'penis' rather than the League of Legends/Heimerdinger/Internet meme but "raise your dongers" it is then. Shearonink (talk) 18:27, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Yank Barry may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "{}"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • In 2014, Barry received his third nomination for the [[Nobel Peace Prize]].<ref name = "third"/>{

Bolivarian propaganda

I saw that you reviewed the original proposal for the article to be deleted. The article is up for deletion again and I was wondering if you could take a look at the article.--Zfigueroa (talk) 00:51, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Notification of a June AfC BackLog Drive

Hello Shearonink:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Elimination Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from June 1, 2014 to June 30, 2014.

Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 2400 articles, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

The AfC helper script can assist you in tallying your edits automatically. To view a full list of changes, visit the changelog. Please report bugs and feature requests there, too! Thanks. Thanks! It's kind of hard to keep all the stuff together in my head and since there weren't any particular libel implications to the material I put it up in response to a "We need more info about his early life" request. I won't re-add it. The inverse of "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof" would seem to apply. - Richfife (talk) 18:25, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Lincoln assassination

I have been trying to change the wording in the quote to the correct source; 10->ten (as it appears in the source material. Also adding more sources for Lincoln's goodbye to Crook. Also changed "a" knife to "the" knife. By having it as "a" knife, it sounds like Booth changed knives or something. It was the same he stabbed Rathbone with. Also need help adding sources(pages, books, ect.) I am afraid — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.128.189 (talk) 21:02, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

I am afraid Acroterion is not listing.

The Bath school disaster

Hi Shearonink Yes, that is true, however by adding the "/mass murder" tag to the end, it does not change that fact. The reason that I felt that attaching the "/mass murder" tag to the end will be helpful, was so that modern day researchers would have an easier time finding it, without denying the fact that it is also simply called the "Bath school disaster". Most modern researchers are far more likely to cross-reference the words "school" and "mass murder" in doing Google research on this, than "school" and "disaster". Scott P. (talk) 17:23, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

You did this renaming and instituted the redirects without any editorial consensus. You did not post your ideas on the talkpage before this wholesale change, which, by the way, would seem to be against the WP:MOS. Please continue any further discussion about this issue on the article's talk page so other editors can weigh in with their thoughts. Shearonink (talk) 17:34, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
I apologize for this. I have already continued this discussion over there. I'm only trying to reach a sort of a compromise between old terminology and new terminology, but let's continue this conversation over there. Thanks, Scott P. (talk) 17:39, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Yes, already over on the article's talk page, but I must say that it would probably have been more appropriate for the matter to have been discussed on the talk page before the article was renamed. Shearonink (talk) 17:44, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Nomination of Yank Barry for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Yank Barry is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Yank Barry until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. - Cwobeel (talk) 02:54, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

Hello Shearonink. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "nanoHUB-U".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/nanoHUB-U}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, click "Save page", and an administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. HasteurBot (talk) 10:03, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Barney Kalman was the original drummer. Barry Curtis doesn't like to admit it. But he wasn't part of the group then. Why do you keep editing Barney out? What can I say to make you believe? — Preceding unsigned comment added by judymarlborough (talkcontribs) 00:09, 18 October 2014‎ (UTC)

You need to prove your assertion that Mr. Kalman is a past member of the group by finding better sources than a user-submitted Internet forum to back up your claims. Please take a look at reliable sources and the various links I left on your talk page. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 00:59, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Shearonink. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Hi. To be honest, I've no idea why the links in the Harvard refs don't go anywhere and never have. Template:Harvard citation says the template makes "a one-directional link to the first matching citation template on the same page", so maybe that's why? I just converted them out of boredom and to make the article look cleaner. Perhaps someone at the Village Pump knows? Pinkadelica (Talk) 07:53, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello :-). I know that the lead section is used to describe the context end the reason for notability but in this particular case I think that it's confusing. The actress is notable for other reasons, for example for her role in Quincy, M.E., this is why I removed the sentence: currently it is not neutral and a bit biased. Thanks :) --Lucas (talk) 06:34, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Well perhaps, then, the sentence could have been edited to reflect more of Miss Gillette's various claims of notability rather then deleting much of its content? Anyway, I've since tweaked it a bit so more of her claims to notability are included. Shearonink (talk) 08:32, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
I thought (perhaps a bit quickly :-) that it was better to delete a wrong information instead of keeping it, and I have to admin that I am not very good in summarizing (because we have very diffrent policies in it.wiki). But you are right: let me say that you did a great work in rephrasing the text, thanks for your help! :-) --Lucas (talk) 11:41, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Glad to help and all's well that ends well. Shearonink (talk) 16:47, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Graves

Shearonink,

Regarding your request for a re-assessment of Benjamin Franklin Graves, I've done a re-assessment, and it still appears as a Start class article to me. The key things that in my opinion would need to be addressed to move it up to a higher class are to make it longer and more comprehensive. Right now the article is only about 2500 bytes of prose, and focuses almost entirely on his involvement in the war of 1812. Though I know sources may not be available to tell us about much of the rest of his life, I would consider expansion in other areas key to moving him up to C class. However, don't think that this Start class means that it is not a worthwhile article. 1bandsaw (talk) 20:44, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your feedback. I was taking a look at the article assessment scale and thought it would at least be a C keeping in mind those stated parameters:
The article is substantial, but is still missing important content or contains much irrelevant material. The article should have some references to reliable sources, but may still have significant problems or require substantial cleanup.
The article cites at least one reliable source and is better developed in style, structure, and quality than Start-Class, but it fails one or more of the criteria for B-Class. It may have some gaps or missing elements; need editing for clarity, balance, or flow; or contain policy violations, such as bias or original research. Articles on fictional topics are likely to be marked as C-Class if they are written from an in-universe perspective. It is most likely that C-Class articles have a reasonable encyclopedic style.
Anyway, if you could point me which WikiProject you're referring to I'll take a look at their examples so maybe it can be worked up into at least the next Level. Thanks,Shearonink (talk) 22:15, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
I was evaluating from the standpoint of Biography, as that's where I came across your request. I look forward to seeing more about B. F. Graves! 1bandsaw (talk) 22:24, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

UVA name list thing

I don't think you've understood what I've been trying to say about listing Jackie's friend's names. I think your change was a step in the right direction, but not the point. Look at this:

The two friends confirmed to the Post that they remembered meeting "Jackie" on the night of the incident, that she was distraught but not visibly injured or bloodied, and that details she provided then were different from those in the Rolling Stone article. One friend, Ryan Duffin (called "Randall" in the Rolling Stone article), told the Washington Post that he had never spoken to any reporter from Rolling Stone, despite the fact that Erdely had claimed him as a source to corroborate the accuser's story. [36] [27][37]

What I'm trying to say is that's how you should identify Jackie's friends. If you want to identify the other two, it should look like that: They're quoted or otherwise referenced by name and identified by alias in an RS. Are there facts worthy of inclusion for the other two similar to the above? If so, identify them the same way that Randall is identified above. If not, don't identify them. I'm not trying to stop you putting their names in. I figure that if you really want to, you can find passages in the RSs that justify identifying the other two. I'm just saying they should be identified iff such facts are added. Dingsuntil (talk) 04:28, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Guess what, I do understand what you've been saying. You don't like lists! You want the information to be integrated into the Wikipedia article! And, guess what? I *agree* with you. Look, I think it's important, These people stepped up and publicly identified themselves as the people at the heart of a huge media controversy. If they are willing to identify themselves their names shouldn't be left out of the Wikipedia article that reports on this event and its aftermath. These people are part of the story now, what their pseudonymous stand-ins are asserted to have done is part of it too, but the *people* should be given their personhood and allowed to have their part in this narrative. Crafting a Wikipedia article so this will all make timeline/linear sense will take some time, that's all. Shearonink (talk) 06:17, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
Fair enough. Dingsuntil (talk) 00:24, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

MOS Style

Thanks for the note re MOS. Ordinarily I'd agree. In this case I think the article reads better with the links to the Rolling Stone article and retraction before the (vast) list of refs. Capitalismojo (talk) 02:07, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Bare ref note

Thanks! Fixed. I had tried refill but it didn't work. Capitalismojo (talk) 17:19, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Mt Washington (NH) Renaming

There is a White House.gov petition to change the name of the great peak that is active because it is a micro-aggression to African-Americans to honor a man who owned over 300 slaves. Links were provided (1) to support Washington's slavery ownership and (2) to the petition itself. These are third party facts, so why is it being censured? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Taxed2death (talkcontribs) 13:01, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

There is no censoring happening in this instance. The sources you provided in your previous edits to Mount Washington (New Hampshire) ‎did not prove the text you placed in that article. Now you're stating that there is a petition, but that is not the same as your previously-asserted "executive order from the President of the United States" (besides, Denali's name was not changed by a Presidential executive order it was changed on the Federal level by a secretarial order from Secretary of the Interior Jewell). Also, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it is a compendium of information published in reliable sources and content is added or deleted through editorial consensus. If multiple editors are reverting content you have added to an article, then the next step you should take is to discuss the reverted content on the article's talk page, which is where any further discussion should take place.
If this renaming is an issue you feel passionately about I would suggest that you take User:Ken Gallager's advice as he posted in the Mt. Washington (NH) Revision section on his talk page. Shearonink (talk) 17:06, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Suggested changes to criteria for list articles

I know you don't want to be very active, but have tried to initiate discussion again at List of school shootings in the United States and List of school attacks to narrow criteria to something that might have meaning. These long lists of every act of violence that happened to occur at a school are useless. If the underlying interest is the rise in mass school shootings in the US in the late 20th century, which individual articles already attract great attention, let's focus the criteria. There is a chilling article about school shootings in this week's New Yorker, Malcolm Gladwell's "Thresholds of Violence", relating the rise in mass shootings (which seems to be the underlying interest in why these list article were founded) to studies about how riots develop - and attract different people as they roll along (including people who would never have been part of the initial violence). A list with a focus on mass school shootings in the United States, rather than every act of violence that happens to take place at a school, might be able to make use of such research and give readers more to think about.Parkwells (talk) 13:15, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

There's been a recent spate of additions (by mostly IP-editors and some possible SPAs/new editors) that seem to be including every minor scuffle, every misdemeanor assault that is occurring or has occurred in (especially) US schools and I find the trend troubling. I think the subject-matter would be better served by including incidents that attract nationwide/statewide/regional attention, appear in multiple media outlets (not just a single local paper/TV news) and incur some level of political/gun-control/mental-health/societal change. Another issue is how bloated these lists have become - List of attacks related to secondary schools is at 895kb and List of school shootings in the United States is at 775 kb!
But you're right, I don't know if I have the time or willpower right now for picking through the list and deleting the info-cruft. I might be able to provide some assistance but can't carry the flag in this issue.Shearonink (talk) 14:32, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments on potential criteria; I agree these lists need to be reduced. I have discovered there are many other related lists, as well, such as List of rampage killers (school massacres), which requires only 2 fatalities for listing.Parkwells (talk) 14:36, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Someone had arbitrarily changed the criteria for the list above; the master list criteria make somewhat more sense. I deleted about 30 entries that didn't meet the criteria. Parkwells (talk) 16:17, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Additionally, doing this creates a blue link that misleads people into thinking archives exist when they don't. In the future, please let the archive bot create the page. Thanks. I was wondering why the talk page was starting to get unwieldy in length and thought it might be because no talk page archive had been established - I remembered the archive bots have been misbehaving recently & thought this might be another problem. And so now there's a temporarily empty archive page that doesn't have content (for the moment) and that is an issue...
Ok.
Well, anyway, I have been unable to find anything on Help:Archiving a talk page and How to Archive a Talk Page and User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo and Template:Talk archive that says the bot/s create the named archived-content pages (Talk: (Article title)/Archive 1) automatically - maybe you could clear up that misunderstanding on them and any other technical helps pages associated with archiving so others won't make my apparent mistake. Thanks. Shearonink (talk) 03:44, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
The Miszabots have been down for some time, but Lowercase sigmabot is now performing the archiving functions. The page in question may start to archive as early as tonight or in the next day or two. In any events, the bots do automatically create the page and automatically apply the header that is given in the configuration on the main talk page. Safiel (talk) 03:48, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I know the MiszaBot/s have been offline for a couple of years. I was referring to what seemed to be some archiving issues that sigmabot was having earlier this year, and, yes, I know from past experience that it can take a couple of days for archiving to kick in. I am, however, suggesting to you that the fact that the bot/s automatically create the "Talk:(Article name)/Archive #" pages is not clear. I am an editor with some experience, if I can make this apparent error others can as well (Heck, just take a look at [1] and [2] or how about the instructions at Template:Talk archive?) If people are following the instructions that they can find, there shouldn't be a problem. If what they are finding is incorrect, well, I was thinking you could help fix that. Thanks. I will mention it to the owner of the bot account and see if he may be able to make the instructions more clear on that point. Since the pages are in user space, I would not be so bold as to edit it directly. Safiel (talk) 04:51, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
I can let sigma know, that wasn't quite what I was trying to get across. My point is that it is not just the various archiving bot pages run by users, it is also all the other Wikipedia pages & its sister groups' pages associated with archiving...like "Template:Talk archive" etc. & the instructions page for archiving at Commons etc etc that are lacking the info: 1)that the bot/s will create the first archive page before moving the content there, 2)that editors do not need to manually create the first/empty archive-talk page in order for the bots to kick in and start moving the stale posts from the talk page to the archive. If I've missed it then other editors might too. Since you consider the blue-linking that occurred to be an issue and others like myself might be following the various instructions that they can find, I thought you would like to correct the situation yourself.
