You are invited to join us at Ace Hotel for Wikipedia Day NYC 2017, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of the project's global 16th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

With special guests Katherine Maher of the Wikimedia Foundation and Tim Wu of Columbia Law School speaking on our Post-truth panel!

Also featuring an International/Multilingual panel, a Documenting Activism panel, a Multimedia/Tech Panel, a Science panel, an Art panel, and more.

And there will be cake.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 14:56, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

William Pūnohu White

Many thanks for the GA review on James Kaliokalani. I was wondering if you have the time, can you do a review of William Pūnohu White? Thanks.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 05:04, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

Please let me know if this does not interest you or you have no time for it at the moment. Because I may want to just skip the GA review (skip the waiting) and go straight for an FA review. No hard feelings either way just like to know so I can make a decision. Thanks!--KAVEBEAR (talk) 08:38, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
@KAVEBEAR:Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you - I'd be glad to. I do think it would be useful to go for a GA first but it's up to you. Shearonink (talk) 04:54, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
Ok thanks. Please do so (review it that is). Thanks!--KAVEBEAR (talk) 04:57, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for this! I've responded to your points. Adam Cuerden (talk) 06:25, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

For your thoughtful review of Historic Presbyterian Community Center (Madison, Nebraska), and for your patience with the slow pace with which I made the necessary changes. It's a far better article for your input, and Wikipedia is a better place for editors like you who're willing to put in the time to do quality GARs. Ammodramus (talk) 14:47, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Re: Whisky Rebellion

Hello, thanks for the note. However, I know nothing about this subject; I only have the article on my watchlist to fight against vandalism. Therefore I don't feel comfortable dealing with the GA review. Graham87 05:01, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Ah ok. Well thanks for the reply anyway. Shearonink (talk) 05:03, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Assassination of Abraham Lincoln you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Hi, many thanks for dealing with the GA review of Christopher R. W. Nevinson. Much appreciated.14GTR (talk) 15:26, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

The article Assassination of Abraham Lincoln you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Assassination of Abraham Lincoln for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. Heh, well, since the GAR requester is self-blocked I figured they weren't going to be able to do that requested spot-check and it didn't seem fair to let the article languish in some sort of a GAR/Wiki-limbo so I checked all the refs for at least one asserted fact. Glad to help, Shearonink (talk) 03:56, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
And thanks for the Barnstar. Shearonink (talk) 04:00, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi

Thanks for you co-operation on the Hamill article. Could you please take a look at the settings for my talk page archiving. So I have done that correctly anyway :-) Good that the bot worked without any problems.--BabbaQ (talk) 12:31, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

@BabbaQ:I had something else written up but then I noticed that the Bot isn't doing the archiving, you are?... You shouldn't have to be doing anything for your archiving to work. And all your archives are ending up on one page - User talk:BabbaQ/Archive 1. The way it is set up now there will never be a User talk:BabbaQ/Archive 2...
Your archiving code is:
  • {{Talk header}} {{User:MiszaBot/config | algo = old(14d) | archive = User talk:BabbaQ [other parameters - ***read below***] }}
My archiving code is:
  • {{User:MiszaBot/config |archiveheader = {{talkarchivenav}} |maxarchivesize = 100K |counter = 8 |minthreadsleft = 1 |minthreadstoarchive = 1 |algo = old(14d) |archive = User talk:Shearonink/Archive %(counter)d }} {{archive box|auto=yes|search=yes}}
Disregard my counter #, that is constantly changing as the Bot moves stale (14 day old) posts from my main talkpage to my Archives. If you look at my Archive pages User talk:Shearonink/Archive 1 you'll see that my archive pages are set up to be a certain size (100K) and when that size-limit is hit the Bot then starts a new Archive page. The Bot that is doing my archiving is Lowercase sigmabot III (which took over for MiszaBot I/II/III). I can't tell if your archiving will work or not because you've been doing the moving yourself. I could change your archiving to my style but 1)am not sure that's what you want and 2)your present Archive pages will not change...
I think you need to ask some of the techno-coding wizards around here to take a look at your set-up to see:
A)If your archiving will work and
B)If it does work, does it do what you want.
Hope this all helps, Shearonink (talk) 15:48, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
I perhaps should have just left it alone. But that is not an option anymore. I would appreciate it if you could change to your code. So the archiving perhaps could start working for Archive 3 or similar. It is worth a try.BabbaQ (talk) 15:53, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
I added another code. I will try and see how that works first. Thanks.BabbaQ (talk) 16:09, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
@BabbaQ: I did add some linkage to the top of Archive 2 so there will be a link to the preceding and subsequent Archive pages. The important thing now is to leave it all alone - let the Bot do its work. Lol, I know that's hard - but you gotta let the dish cook a while to see if the recipe will turn out. 4th GA Cup - Round 3

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup - Round 3

Hello, GA Cup competitors!

Sunday saw the end of Round 2. Shearonink took out Round 2 with an amazing score of 499. In second place, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga earned an astounding 236 points, and in third place, Cartoon network freak received 136 points. Originally, we had plans for one wild card for 9th place, however it appears that both Chris troutman and J Milburn were tied for 9th place. Therefore, we have decided to have both advance to Round 3.

In Round 2, 91 reviews were completed! At the beginning of this GA Cup, the longest wait was over 7 months; at the end of Round 2, the longest wait had decreased to a little over 6 months. It's clear that we continue to make a difference at GAN and throughout Wikipedia, something we should all be proud of. Thanks to all our competitors for helping to make the GA Cup a continued success, and for your part in helping other editors improve articles. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in Round 3 so we can keep decreasing the backlog.

To qualify for the third round, contestants had to earn the two highest scores in each of the four pools in Round 2; plus, one wildcard. For Round 3, users were placed in 3 random pools of 3. To qualify for the Final of the 3rd Annual GA Cup, the top user in each pool will progress, and there will also be one wildcard. This means that the participant who comes in 4th place (all pools combined) will also move on. Round 3 has already started and will end on February 26 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 3 and the pools can be found here.

Also, we'd like to announce the departure of judge Zwerg Nase. We thank him for all his hardwork and hope to see him back in the future.

Good luck and have fun!

Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6, Jaguar, and MrWooHoo.

More Whiskey Rebellion content added

I can't tell you how much I admire your patience and kindhearted approach to your review of the Whiskey Rebellion. I decided not to ping you since I put so much content on the review page. I would be pinging you like crazy. As you can see, this is more of a leisurely and congenial effort - but still one worth completing to the end. Thank you again. The Best of Regards,

The Great Silence

Thank you very much for your review of The Great Silence. I removed the Amazon-related info from the DVD section, but how do you recommend I go about with the other changes you recommended? What should I rewrite within the protagonist section? PatTheMoron (talk) 11:17, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, I've continued this discussion on Talk:The Great Silence/GA1. Shearonink (talk) 15:44, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

I've rewritten part of the protagonist section to explicitly mention the writers who described the film in the terms they did. Is it okay, now? PatTheMoron (talk) 09:13, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Shearonink, just curious when you might get started on the GA at Ocute? Just trying to prepare in case anything needs to be changed.--Cúchullain t/c 20:09, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

@Cuchullain: Sorry I have been swamped with all the Reviews I have been doing for the GA Cup. I will get started on your GA nom/Ocute right now. Shearonink (talk) 20:18, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
Not a problem at all, it's better to do things right than to do them fast.--Cúchullain t/c 20:20, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
Actually, I just checked my Review page and I forgot to log Ocute onto it - many MANY thanks for the reminder. Shearonink (talk) 20:26, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

4th GA Cup - The Final

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup - Final

Hello, GA Cup competitors!

Sunday, February 26 saw the end of Round 3. Shearonink finished in first with 616 points, which is more than the point totals for all the other competitors combined! In second place, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga earned an impressive 152 points, followed by Sturmvogel_66 in third with 111 points. Chris troutman and Kees08 each received a wild-card and were able to advance to the Final Round. There was a major error on the part of the judges, and initially, 8 users were advanced instead of 5. This has been corrected, and we sincerely apologize for this confusion.

In Round 3, 71 reviews were completed! At the beginning of this GA Cup, the longest wait was over 7 months; at the end of Round 3, the longest wait is still holding steady at a little over 6 months, the same as for the previous round. By the end of all three Rounds, the total number of nominations increased slightly - this suggests that users are more willing to nominate, knowing that their articles will be reviewed. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in the Final so we can keep tackling the backlog.

In the Final Round, the user with the highest score will be the winner. The Final has already started and will end on March 31st at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Finals and the pools can be found here.

Good luck and have fun!

Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6, Jaguar, and MrWooHoo.

Sunday March 26: Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, and following on the recent Art+Feminism campaign, we'll focus on building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Wytheville Raid

Thank you for reviewing the Wytheville Raid. Not everybody is willing to review an article with nearly 100 citations and 23 notes. I appreciate your work. It appears you have had some frustrating experiences with "Wikipedians" lately—do not let that destroy your passion. Hopefully they will lose interest after a short while, and you will still be involved. Thanks again. TwoScars (talk) 01:22, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

@TwoScars: Oh, it was a pleasure to review your article. At first the length just looked absolutely overwhelming but once I got the timeline in my head it all started to make perfect sense. Re: being around WP - Well, we all have good days and bad days...I try not to take any of it personally. I've been editing on Wikipedia for around 7 years and I tend to think most people who stick around Wikipedia have the best interests of the project at heart even when we might disagree on how to get there. Shearonink (talk) 01:52, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

A brownie for you!

I'm sorry about the grief between us. I hope it's something we can get past. Here is a peace offering, in the form of delicious, chocolately goodness. Boomer VialHolla! We gonna ball! 21:05, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
No worries....Nom, nom, nom, nom.... chocolate... Shearonink (talk) 01:54, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Shearonink, I noticed that you posted to this page that you were failing the nomination, but you haven't yet actually closed the nomination on the article talk page by replacing the GA nominee template with a FailedGA one. I just wanted to check to see whether there was something else going on with this nomination, or if perhaps you simply forgot to take the final step here. Thanks for all that you're doing at GAN and GAR. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:49, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

@BlueMoonset: The whole thing made me very sad - I hated to do it but no one was answering my calls... Yeah, I'll go adjust those templates to be Failed. Ugh. Shearonink (talk) 14:51, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
I know. It had been waiting so long. And for Caribbean H.Q. to have completed the offline draft and never published it (assuming that it what happened) or even edited Wikipedia since posting that it was ready is a great shame. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:42, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
@BlueMoonset: I left Talkbacks on both C-HQ's page and on Magiciandude's talkpage before I Failed it and didn't hear back from either editor. My main issues were that 1)so much of the article depended on a single faith-based source that the article took on a somewhat-hagiographic tone and 2)there were so many details about non-notable occurrences that the content ended up bordering on the trivial. But still....it broke my heart. They can always re-nominate it at a future date though. Shearonink (talk) 15:51, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
I do hope they return and fix up the article, so it can be nominated again. And, this time, that it gets picked up sooner for reviewing. Thanks for taking it on, and for giving it a thorough review. Those issues needed to be addressed. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:59, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

@Shearonink Good morning,

I cannot tell if you have seen my new topic about Mediation on the Talk page for this article, but I will start the WP:DR process today. My post there explains why. Cheers, Peter K Burian (talk) 11:10, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

I have never seen a User delete another User's Talk page post. This is amazing.

@Shearonink I have filed for Mediation Chantry Island Lightstation Tower vs. Imasku. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_mediation/Chantry_Island_Lightstation_Tower#Parties.27_agreement_to_mediation Peter K Burian (talk) 17:26, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

@Peter K Burian: Thanks for your thoughts on this but I'm moving on. While I disagree with this particular editor's action, I do not feel the need for mediation. The user in question seemed very upset about the various edits on the article and about the posts on their user talk so in my case I am leaving it all alone. Shearonink (talk) 18:31, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
OK Shearonink I understand. I have walked away from some issues of this type too, in the past. But this time I will proceed. All the best, Peter K Burian (talk) 19:40, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
@Peter K Burian: I am concerned that this particular editor has been upset by our recent interest in the Lighthouse Tower article. I would ask that you proceed with the utmost of AGR and civility. Shearonink (talk) 19:47, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
OK @Shearonink I will try my best to be civil. It is harder when another user is so blatant. But I will try.
The info about you at the top of your page indicates you are the type of editor that 95% of us would be happy to collaborate with; and we could compromise to solve any issue if we occasionally disagreed. (But yeah, I have encountered the other 5% too, including one guy who sent me a veiled threat ... and then he said he could leave Wikipedia anytime if he got into any trouble and come back as a new user, starting fresh, without all the baggage. It may not be simple to do, but certainly possible.)
Keep in touch if you need help with some other article. My primary interests are History, Economy, Politics, Ontario communities, Canada, the UK, Sovereignty of countries and territories, the Caribbean, and yes, beer. Peter K Burian (talk) 19:55, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Non-free images in talk page messages

Just a reminder to please check the non-free nature of an image before using it in user talk page messages (like here), as they may be non-free and inappropriate to use outside articles with a non-free use rationale. SounderBruce 23:14, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

@SounderBruce: (edit conflict)The WikiLove notices are something I started doing when I pass an article to a GA status - I know how hard it is to get an article to be a WP:GA. I try to be as careful as possible about the "wikiloves" I leave for GA nominators of the articles I review and that being careful extends to taking a look at the various usage parameters included with the image-File. There are images I have rejected for using on user talkpages because the licensing is too restrictive. I see that this image does have the 4.0 CCSA licensure which includes an attributions' parameter so I was going to remove it from the WikiLove notice I left on your page. I won't make that mistake again. Shearonink (talk) 23:26, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
The station icons (pictograms) for Sound Transit are not licensed under CC or anything compatible. They are fully copyrighted and should not be used in any WikiLove messages. I appreciate the messages that use my own pictures (or other appropriately-licensed pictures), though. SounderBruce 23:30, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the correction. Shearonink (talk) 23:43, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

Airbus A320 Family GA Review

Hey Shearonink, hope you're well and having a good week so far mate. Just came to let you know that I will be a lot slower than usual to fix the problems you have listed on the GA page, as this week I have embarked on a two week work experience programme at the bus company Go-Ahead London. I work all day from 9 to 5 and then have to write a log book for my college which takes an awful long time. Therefore I don't really have that much time throughout the week to fix the problems listed, however I will try my best if i get my log book finished early, and should be freed up by the weekend. Is there any way we can notify other editors to help out, such as at WikiProject Aviation? Thanks for your understanding and I will try to fix the issues you have mentioned when I get time. Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 20:46, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

I'll leave a Talkback at the appropriate WikiProjects. As I am participating in the most recent GA Cup I would like to have this Review done before the end of the month. There isn't really all that much to fix, especially considering the massive size of this article. Maybe someone will be able to step in and lend a hand. Shearonink (talk) 20:52, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
Everything alright? You havent been online for 4 days! All the concerns seem to be now fixed by Marc Lacoste, who I thank for stepping in and helping out in my absence. Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 09:53, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
@Class455: I'll take a look at the changes today. Life in general was interfering with Wikipedia-ing plus "stuff". Shearonink (talk) 18:48, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

Hamilton and slavery

Most all historians say he never owned slaves, though when he was younger, before he moved to what is now the United States, Hamilton worked for a Trade company that traded in slaves as well as other things such as Rum, sugar, etc. It is clear from his later actions that he was fervent in his disdain for slavery. This is evident in his writings on what he saw as the contradiction of the American Revolution's cry against the British "making slaves out of the colonist" and that the revolution was to bring about liberty and freedom from oppression of Britain when these same colonist oppressed and enslaved their fellow man. Hamilton tirelessly tried to end the slave trade in the United States, especially in New York and helped to found an organization, the first non-Quaker organization, whose goal was to abolish slavery in New York. Some of the members in question did have slaves but Hamilton was not among them. There is no evidence what so ever that implies that Hamilton participated in the American slave trade, in fact he appears to abhor the practice for moralistic and logic-based reasons, reasons that are believed by some historians to have their roots in his witnessing of the more barbarous Caribbean slave Trade, which was among the harshest in the world (South America's is considered to have been worse by some). Hamilton fought for equal rights for black citizens, fought to abolish slavery, and even wrote about how black people were "equal to us in terms of their mental faculties" and wrote in favor for a multi-cultural society in America, which broke from founders like Washington, Jefferson and others, who did not see slaves as being mentally equal to their slave-owning counterparts and saw who no way that freed slaves could coexist among their former masters. Hamilton even supported the Haitian slave revolt and again broke from his contemporaries in support for the new republic and sought to forge closer trade and diplomatic ties between Haiti and the U.S, but the Slave-holding interest in the south was spooked by the violent revolution and not only did they reject the plan but limited the rights of American-owned slaves in those states that still held them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by OzarkerRazorback (talkcontribs) 07:08, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

@OzarkerRazorback: It would be better for the article for this issue to be discussed on the article talkpage but since you've raised the issue on my talkpages I'll respond here.
I understand that you have a strong point of view about this issue but there are considered differences of opinion between historians about if Hamilton owned slaves or if he did not. For Wikipedia to delete this sourced information from the article doesn't serve our readers or the subject well.
Looking at the literature and sources some things do seem to be true:
  1. Hamilton published statements against slavery and was a member of the Manumission Society.
  2. Hamilton bought and sold people as an agent for others.
  3. Hamilton profited from the slave trade because his wife's family, the Schuylers, owned many slaves .
  4. Some experts on the subject/historians have published statements that Hamilton held people as property and others have published statements that he did not hold people as property. Both viewpoints are supported by interpretations of historical documents/references.
Even though Wikipedia has a separate article about Alexander Hamilton and slavery is important that we also be able to verify any statements in the main Hamilton article - his opinions, possible ownership of people, his actions - from reliable sources.
A good overview can be found in the following Schuyler Mansion columns:
Here are some other references that also lay out the various issues re: Hamilton/slavery:

Ancestry

Hello @Shearonink: Thanks for your efforts in trying to ferret out the basis for Ancestry edits in four Mississippi County articles that first appeared on May 11. As you noted in your recent edits on May 13, "...Info as stated does not seem to exist in cited source..." I was able to track down 2015 ancestry data for Perry County, Mississippi, but not at the "source" referenced by the IP user. Note that for Perry County, the numerical data in the statistical atlas reference do not match the numbers given by the IP users. I found it peculiar that the "contributions" of three different IP addresses (72.250.242.174 (North Carolina), 64.134.101.148 (Kansas), 98.103.156.199 (Ohio)) were basically limited to the four Mississippi Counties. It would appear the these edits are nothing more than vandalism and should be deleted. Plus, I doubt that "self-reported ancestry data" are considered reliable sources in Wikipedia. Regards. Woodlot (talk) 12:05, 13 May 2017 (UTC)

@Woodlot: I see this POV-warrior's asserted information at the source above and self-reported ancestry data is sort of part of the 2010 US Census (see Census questions) but this editor is asserting the information as being from "As of 2015" (which doesn't quite seem completely correct). There is a "Some other race" parameter, and I did find this for Perry County but these official stats don't agree with what has been added to the article. I just wish this person (assuming it is all one person) would have cited a specific source for the info they added to the articles. Maybe this is all a mangled classroom assignment for some online class...either that or meat/sock puppets with a strange sense of humor... Assuming good faith (maybe they're just a new enthusiastic editor who travels around a lot...), I'm going to wait to see what they do with the reference improvement templates and the various notices on their talk pages. Shearonink (talk) 13:40, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
@Shearonink: You may be correct to 'wait and see', but please compare Perry County 2015 ancestry census data here, updated April 17, 2015, to that reported by IP editor as 2015 data in the Perry County article here — the percentages don't match. In fact, percentages don't match for any of the other 3 counties (Marion, Pearl River, Stone). Even if they did, should these "ancestry" tables now be added to all Wikipedia articles for counties in the United States? Woodlot (talk) 14:37, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
@Woodlot: Yeah, took me quite a while to tease out the actual figures - theirs aren't correct at all. Assuming it is all the same editor or a group of associated editors, the IP-hopping is an issue but I try to give folks a chance - I remember when I started editing here how the rules/guidelines seemed so obtuse and strange to me. If they don't respond then I'll delete it all and give them a Level 3 & 4 Warning etc. if they revert again especially without an explanation.
And I agree with you that putting up all the self-reported ethnic percentages is not something I want to see in all (or even any) of the US County articles. If the editorial consensus were for adding the information then that would be different but that doesn't seem to be the case. ...Btw have you noticed how all this country/ethnic percentages are for white Europeans? Shearonink (talk) 16:01, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
@Shearonink: We seem to be in agreement. As regards to your question about 'country/ethnic percentages', yes the data appear to be skewed to European countries, while Hispanics and Asians are clumped into the "other" category, according to the table footnote, which is another reason to question its inclusion on Wikipedia. Woodlot (talk) 19:35, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
@Woodlot: FYI - No answer to my posted concerns @ the "Ancestry" content on any of the talkpages, so I've gone ahead and removed the unsourced assertions. Shearonink (talk) 23:51, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

A talk page bulletpoint

Hi, thanks for writing to me. Below I've posted your note followed with my reply.

Alfred Nemours - You are basically spamming - as in "repeating the same content over and over and over again" - your own posts. Your "replies" are often pretty much the same content "Please take a minute to actually read the comment itself... (etc.)" If you have an issue with the usage of the word "attack" within the pages of Wikipedia because you think it is disparaging certain groups, then, I am in agreement with EvergreenFir - I suggest you take the issue up at an appropriate Village Pump and not spread out/decentralize any possible discussions over multiple (23 at last count!) pages throughout Wikipedia.Shearonink (talk) 21:41, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
Thanks again for writing. My two replies were identical where I thought that they responded to the same criticism. As for the comment, the goal was never to decentralize discussion. It was not even to stimulate discussion or any editorial changes in the way any articles are structured. It was simply to register a concern with fellow readers that I find to be serious and fundamental to our understanding of an event. It so happens that this concern pertains to more than one event. I simply posted the comment where I thought it was applicable--again, under an obtrusive bullet in the talk page, bothering no one yet available to an interested reader. A reader with a specific interest in a deep and accurate understanding of recent events in London might not ever see a bulletpoint raised on a page relating to Manchester. I can see an interest in centralizing discussion that relates to proposed action on an agenda item. But no action is being proposed. I am simply registering a concern with fellow readers in a forum where space is not an issue and where bulletpoints are hyperlinked, facilitating easy navigation. I thought that's one of the things wikipedia talk pages are supposed to be about. Alfred Nemours (talk) 22:41, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Re: puzzled about this import...

Hello, I was looking at the page history of the Classic books page on the Nostalgia Wikipedia and found that it contained this edit which was not in the English Wikipedia database. Using a right I have in Wikipedia called importupload, I was able to copy (or import) that edit to the English Wikipedia history at "Classic book", so it now appears like so. There are several peculiarities about the way it appears when it is imported (described on my user subpage about importing), but the main thing is that the edit is now properly attributed. Standardizing Airline Pages

Hello, not sure if I'm doing this right or not. You removed several of my edits recently on the United Airlines page. Allow me to explain myself. The section "controversies" seems to exhibit clear bias against the airline as United is the only airline containing this section, and the majority are recent (2017) social media complaints. Both American Airlines and Delta Airlines have no such section, instead public relations issues are included under "accidents and incidents", if included at all. In hopes of having a standard layout for all airline pages without bias, this section should be compressed into "accidents and incidents" or removed entirely. These pages should not be places to vent frustrations about corporate affairs. Dmarr1 (talk) 20:19, 3 August 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dmarr1 (talkcontribs) 20:12, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

The content you have been removing is sourced from reliable sources. Wikipedia reports on what appears elsewhere, we do not write essays or opinion pieces. If frustrations about corporate affairs is what is in the news, if frustrations about corporate affairs is what is appearing in magazines and newspapers and on television news shows and in reliable online sources then that is what should appear in such an article. That being said, in my opinion the content you removed is not a form of WP:ATTACK - in my opinion the content is merely what has been published elsewhere in reliable sources. If you disagree with my assessment, that is fine. The best way to proceed on United Airlines is to post your concerns on the article's talk page and ask for input there. If you think that multiple airline pages need to be brought into agreement with each other or they should be standardized in some of their aspects then it might be best to post about your concerns at an appropriate WikiProject - WP:AVIATION would seem to be a good fit.
This online encyclopedia is created through editorial consensus, so folks will weigh in with their thoughts - keeping in mind Wikipedia's policies and guidelines - and a consensus will develop. You might change my mind, I might change yours - it's all good. Shearonink (talk) 21:02, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

No one can help me with this change wtf...

So. When I bring up an editing window I now see Times New Roman or a variant thereof in the editing window...and this just happened today because I was editing earlier and the font in the editing window was Arial or whatever...I seriously cannot continue editing if I can't figure out how to fix this. It's too hard on my eyes. Shearonink (talk) 04:04, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Mine is the same too, albeit in Courier font. Have you tried the Help Desk?Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 10:15, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
Class455: I went on IRC and asked in the help channel. It has something to do with a change that was rolled out this week about the WP editing "Preferences" & how they interact with our Safari/OS browser preferences. See this, this at phabricator, and this - "The default font in the edit window will change for some users this week. Instead of using the browser default, it will be monospace. Users can change this in their preferences. This should only change this for some users on Macs and iOS devices." The phabricator link said there should be some announcement about the change but I don't remember seeing anything about it... I did change my "Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing" from the default "Monospaced font" (which was that unreadable Times New Roman/Courier style) to "Sans-serif font" and that helps somewhat but the font in my editing window still looks a little weird to me. Sunday November 19, 10:30 am - 4:00pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.

10:30 am - 4:00 pm in Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Uris Center for Education
81st Street entrance, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided.

We also welcome remote participation for the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month, running November 1-30.

Thanks, and hope to see you at the museum, and/or as part of the online Wikipedia Asian Month contest!--Pharos (talk) 16:36, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

Many thanks for changing my typed text for the word "Martyr" to a wikilink to Martyr (band) at Wikipedia: Articles for deletion. As one may appreciate, with so many articles in Wikipedia, typing in Wikilinks may get confusing at times! Vorbee (talk) 17:24, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

Thank you NeilN that's very kind. Glad it's useful for folks. I give all credit to DBigXray - I just took what he started and tried to make a help for the folks like me who stumble into WP and feel lost about everything, including "how in the world do I make these wiki-references?". PS - And you write great articles and have a level head on your shoulders and a keen grasp of WP-editing practices. Anytime you want to run for any WP-stuff (oh, I don't know...like maybe the door? lol) I'd be very happy to support you. Shearonink (talk) 21:44, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

4th GA Cup - Wrap Up

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup - Wrap Up

Hello, GA Cup competitors!

Saturday, April 1 concluded the 2016-2017 GA Cup. 64 reviews were completed by our finalists. Although the backlog increased by 42 over the reviewing period instead of declining, the increase suggests that the contest is encouraging editors to nominate articles for review.

Congratulations to Shearonink, who is the winner of the Cup, finishing with 672 points! Once again, just as in last round, this is more than the point totals for all the other competitors combined! It was a close race for second place between Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, who achieved 164 points, and Sturmvogel_66, who earned 150. Though Sturmvogel_66 reviewed one more article than Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga managed to earn 14 points more due to reviewing older articles. Our two wildcard competitors, Kees08 and Chris troutman, came in fourth and fifth, respectively.

There were some bumps in the competition this time: The sign-up deadline and the first round were both extended due to fewer competitors signing up then was planned for. And there were delays in tallying points and getting out the newsletter. The judges apologize for this latter difficulty. Lastly, mid-way through the competition we bid farewell to Zwerg Nase, who stepped down from their position as judge due to other commitments. Information about the Final can be found here.

Thank you to all of our competitors, and congrats to our winners!

Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6, Jaguar, and MrWooHoo.
