question re: language support[edit]

This must be about Draft:Paul Mann (conductor). I can find no evidence that it has been submitted. Before you do submit it, you should read Help:Referencing for beginners. Maproom (talk) 17:41, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Lua error?[edit]

That makes little sense since current version of Module:I18n/complex date calls "require("Module:Linguistic").conj" on numerour occasions. I guess whoever cloned c:Module:I18n/complex date to Wikipedia did not copy all dependencies. --Jarekt (talk) 20:44, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

question about t.v. ratings from 2 countries.[edit]

Yesterday I had a page/ article notice at My Hero Academia Season 2 and there is a short sentence about t.v. ratings from 2 countries; one to the US and Japan, but from Template:Japanese episode list does not have a table column for how many people watched it. Then about an hour ago I read this concered at here. So at first I thought there was a table column for the show, because it was late at night. But some shows/ anime doesn't use t.v. ratings, if most last for 10 to 20 episodes. Then should the info be set aside or take out? Tainted-wingsz (talk) 20:04, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What does nowiki mean?[edit]

I've noticed that when using the Visual Editor to publish edits, a series of "nowiki" templates show up across the article in source mode, most often near images or other templates. VisualEditor has a tendency to insert unnecessary or unwanted nowiki tags but some of them have a reason. For example ''Siamosaurus''<nowiki/>'s in your sandbox. It's done to avoid a triple ''' which means bold. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:35, 22 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to cite a book review[edit]

All major citation styles that I'm familiar with have a distinct format for citing a book review. If I wanted to cite this review in Chicago style, for instance, it would be formatted:

Peter C. Lutze, review of Reframing Culture: The Case of the Vitagraph Quality Films, by William Uricchio and Roberta E. Pearson, The Journal of American History 81, no. 4 (March 1995): 1783–1784.

This format explicitly identifies the article as a book review by including the phrase "review of" and identifies both the author(s) of the review and the author(s) of the reviewed work. Is there a way to achieve something similar using Wikipedia's citation templates? There does not appear to be a cite book review template, and templates such as cite journal and cite magazine don't have parameters like |reviewer= or |reviewed-work= that could differentiate a book review from the standard citation format for these sources. Hi Lord Bolingbroke. I just treat the book review as the title. This one is in the Book Review section of the journal, so using cite journal gives:

Lutze, Peter C. (1995). "Book reviews—Reframing Culture: The Case of the Vitagraph Quality Films by William Uricchio and Roberta E. Pearson". The Journal of American History. 81 (4): 1783–1784.

If you add italics yourself:

Lutze, Peter C. (1995). "Review of Reframing Culture: The Case of the Vitagraph Quality Films by William Uricchio and Roberta E. Pearson". The Journal of American History. 81 (4): 1783–1784.

@StarryGrandma: Thanks for your help. The only problem I have with your examples is the quote marks. The review doesn't have its own title, as is common in academic journals—it just gives the title of the work being reviewed. Accordingly, I think it would be more accurate to leave the quote marks out, as is done in the Chicago formatting. I realize this is a minor issue, but I'd like to get some feedback from other editors on whether they think it would be useful to modify the CS1 templates in some way to enable a unique format for book reviews. Village pump (idea lab) or Village pump (proposals) seem like good places to bring it up for discussion. Can you think of any other forums that would be more appropriate? MySQL Programmer for Wikipedia Data[edit]

Hello all,

My apologies if this is an inappropriate forum for this announcement. If so, I would be very grateful if someone could direct me to the correct place. I am looking for someone with advanced knowledge of MySQL and Wikipedia data to coach/tutor me as I process Wikipedia data for my dissertation.

I am a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Arizona. For my dissertation, I am data mining Wikipedia to investigate the globalization of knowledge production. I am geolocating IP edits in 271 languages to discern which titles are edited in the most countries. I have done most of the scripting in MySQL, with a small part in Python. I would like to complete this research on my own as much as possible. However, I have encountered problems with the MySQL programming, specifically in regards to the idiosyncrasies of the Wikipedia data. For this reason, I am looking for someone who has advanced MySQL skills with experience with Wikipedia data. I would like this person to coach/tutor me when I have specific problems or questions regarding the data processing. The salary for this work is negotiable.

Lupton family[edit]

Please include the following quote in the section called Anne Lupton on this page. The file is marked number 1 with a small box attached, placed next to reference 122. The readers should be able to read the quote when they push on the small box. Here is the quote from the file- "This is a day for celebrating the friends and supporters of Lady Margaret over the years beginning with the great Enid Moberly-Bell and her friend Anne Lupton."

@Srbernadette: What you refer to as a "file" is actually an external link (see Wikipedia:External links#How to link for an example). Clicking on that link will take you to the URL you have inserted; no other function can be performed when clicking on the link. To achieve something similar to what you want, use the cite web template and insert the quote in the |quote= parameter. You have successfully used the |quote= parameter, within a reference, on multiple occasions in the past. I do not believe it possible to 'photoshop' the image. Once uploaded to Commons, that is what is available. If you require it to be altered, you will have to edit it 'off-Wiki' and upload a new version to Commons. Use the cite web template, put the quote in the quote parameter, and fill out the other parameters with the information needed to verify the source. The outline of what I'm describing looks like this: <ref>{{cite web |url= |title= |date= |website= |access-date= |quote=}}</ref> Please practice doing this yourself. I see from your talk page that you often come to the help desk with similar questions and do not absorb the advice that is given to you.
