Dear "Good Folks" At Wikipedia,

First, allow me to sincerely express my gratitude for being one of the finest Web services provided. THANK YOU to eacxh volunteer that unselfishlessly donates their time to Helping make our world a better & more knowledgable/informed place to live.

Second, While I am a very low income Senior [ live in Gov't. H.U.D. Apt.], I do still try to contribute to certain causes. Wikipedia is 1 such Group. I believe that I have given Wikipedia small donations for about 3 years now. While I do not have much to give, It is important that You know we appreciate the great work you undertake.

I do, respectfully, need to point out 1 "process" that Wikipedia implements that "disturbs/upsets" me. I just, accidentally, got rolled over to Wikipedia on a matter I am researcing. The Wikipedia "overlay" writing asking for Donations said this was 4th time You have asked me.

THAT "NOTICE" MADE ME FEEL VERY "GUILTY/BAD"....... Right now, I have $18.00 in my bank account ! That's It !

Soon, I will get my only source of Income [ a monthly Social Security Check] & will try to make a donation at that time. While I do not mind your "Reminding" me that Wikipedia can use Donations, Please quit stating this is 1st, 2nd, 3rd time......you have aqsked !

Wikimedia Foundation does not track the identity of IP addresses, so it doesn't know your age, income level or whether you donated in the past. Fundraising is handled by employees of the Wikimedia Foundation which runs Wikipedia. The volunteer editors are not involved. We are volunteers here at the help desk. Others have shared your concern at meta:Talk:Fundraising#Avoid stating how many times you've seen the fundraiser. The Foundation isn't running out of money and nobody should feel guilty for not donating. Thanks for doing it in the past. You can just stop if it's a burden. Thomas, please don't give them anything. You have nothing to feel guilty about. The money doesn't go to us volunteers who help build Wikipedia, it goes to the Wikimedia Foundation, who use it to pay for running the servers, hiring lawyers, and other necessary expenses. But they already have far more than they need for that. The more people give them, the more arrogant they get, and the less they do to help the volunteers who do the actual work. Wikipedia Store Main Page Tab on Wikipedia Home Page is it missing or hidden?

Good afternoon, It seems counterintuitive not to have a link to the Wikipedia Store on the home page of Wikipedia. Instead of making a direct donations I purchased Wikipedia Merchandise as birthday or holiday gifts, when I looked this year for a link it was not visible, nor was it easily searchable. Granted, it has been about two years since my last purchase and it was frustrating that I could not see a tab on the home page but was determined to see if the store still existed. So I did discover through some digging to find the Wikipedia Store that there is the Wiki-foundation website which has a tab for the Wikipedia Store. I believe every means possible to generate working revenue is good business, Wikipedia should keep a tab on the main page for the Wikipedia Store which is no longer there. my $0.02 worth of input. What is a &nbsp ; for?

Even if I remove &nbsp ; from a paragraph on Wiki, the paragraph still visually looks the same. What's the point of this? Ak-eater06 (talk) 01:28, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

It's a non-breaking space. It prevents a line feed from being inserted at that point. You will only see a difference if that point would otherwise be the end of a line. Meters (talk) 01:35, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

It's handy if you're typing, for example, a number followed by a unit abbreviation (200 lb.) or a name followed by Jr. or III. It makes sure that the lb. or Jr. or III doesn't run onto the next line--which would look awkward. If it's necessary to move lb. or Jr. or III to the next line, then it will move the word before it, too. Uporządnicki (talk) 01:56, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

WMF Contact

Hello all. I have been seeing a whole host of users pinging here and in a few other groups talking about the current donation campaign. Sometimes our response has been empathetic, sometimes objective factual, sometimes snarky. Clearly at least one of our folks should know of someone from WMF. Can they be asked to a) take this message up their chain fwiw, and / or b) answer these questions for our users and / or c) give us a clean message that can be shared as a reply even if it is a canned one? Truth be told most users do not differentiate between someone at WMF and editors in this group. tl;dr - does anyone know of a WMF contact? We need a better response to some of the users. • On the Teahouse Shushugah developed {{subst:WikiDonation}}, which might be used here as well. See Wikipedia_talk:Teahouse#Standard_Fundraiser_response.

While the template could be improved, it is entirely factual and designed to answer the technical question of how to hide the donation pop-ups. I expect that the forthcoming WMF canned message will wax lyrical about the need to support free knowledge etc. with sadviolins.mp3 playing in the background. If that is the case, I would not use it, and I would encourage others to not use it either.

(I am skeptical of, but not outraged by, the WMF’s ever-increasing donation goals; hopefully, you would not know it from my answers to newbies, which frankly did not come to be recruited into the political factions.) Tagging Shushugah to see if they can use the above information from JBrungs (WMF) to their substitution template {{subst:WikiDonation}}. I particularly like the explicit mention of donate @ wikimedia.org as an email address for folks to follow-up at. Also like some of the information at the Google Doc. Good luck everyone and thanks for handling this. Users are really having a poor experience in seeing banners that continue to show up after they have donated. Whoever designed that box should have thought of a simple "I have already donated" or a "I will not donate" button that will persist states. C'est la vie. Frequent requests for donations

Inconsistency between English and German articles

The article seafood claims that seafood includes fish. However, if we look at the German article de:Meeresfrüchte linked to it, it says that seafood excludes vertebrates. This looks like an inconsistency. How should it be handled? JIP | Talk 12:03, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi @JIP:. So content differences between articles are frequent, with a few reasons. One is that we link the closest possible topic, but sometimes translations have nuances, so this actually could be a case where our "seafood" and their "Meeresfruchte" have slightly different connotations. More frequently, it's just because of different sources being used. This could be resolved by aggregating the sources and seeing if it gives a clearer unified answer. That would need to be done on whichever local project would need to change, on the appropriate talk page.

With that, I should note that projects have different sourcing rules (although I suspect us and de-wiki are probably the most in-sync on source use, of the large projects). So the acceptable sources on en-wiki might give answer A and a slightly different group of acceptable sources give answer B on de-wiki.

In short, check the sources on both articles, and see if they give a singular answer. Otherwise the disparity may not be resolvable, either because the disparity is actually correct, or because the sources being used can't quite be the same. Nosebagbear (talk) 12:13, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

You would need to read English dictionaries and German dictionaries. If the meanings do turn out to be slightly different, this wouldn't be unusual. Wikidata links articles which have been thought to be similar in meaning, but one severe limitation is that Wikidata can only cope with a one-to-one mapping between languages. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:32, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

donation

I think people would give/donate if people felt safer with their relationship with wikipedia. Like, if the leaders/leadership/people behind the wikipedia page created a short video (like 30 seconds) asking for donations, then people would feel like their money was actually going to a real organization - not some random website online. Right now, with all the access to information online, being a personable website is everything. I would definitely give if I knew (virtually) the people who are asking for money. cite book with multiple authors

Such works are generally edited compilations so:

{{cite book |last=Brown |first=AB |chapter=The Brown Chapter |editor-last=Green |editor-first=CD |title=Many Colors |location=City |publisher=Publisher |date=2021 |isbn=}}

Brown, AB (2021). "The Brown Chapter". In Green, CD (ed.). Many Colors. City: Publisher.

It never hurts to provide real life examples of the source(s) that you want to cite; you'll get better answers if you do.

@Palisades1: If you go to Template:Cite book#Examples, you can find a useful example under "Citing a chapter in a book with different authors for different chapters and an editor". Template:User Alias

I have a question about Template:User Alias. In the rules section, it says "DO NOT copy the source on this userbox. Otherwise you risk putting your userpage in a miscategorization, and/or generating duplicate templates/userboxes." What does it mean? What happens if you do copy it? Not sure about the duplicate thing, but it has a noinclude (something that tells a transclusion to not include that part). If you copy the whole source including that noinclude stuff, then the noinclude stuff will show up on the page you put the userbox on--this includes the instructions as well as some categories that are just for categorizing the template and not for categorizing your userpage. - Purplewowies (talk) 15:06, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

Paid 4 template

I have just received a template on my talk page which says 'You may be blocked from editing without further warning if you make any further edits without responding to the inquiry you received regarding undisclosed paid editing.'. Posted by an un-logged in editor. I have not received any inquiry, unless the template itself is the inquiry. No reason has been given. I have simply responded to this template by replying that I am not being paid for editing. I'm wondering, firstly why the template has been issued at all, particularly at level 4. Secondly, has it been issued correctly or should there have been some explanation as to why it has been issued. Thirdly, have I responded in the correct place and fourthly, now that I have responded can I continue editing? Please advise. Amirah talk 15:43, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

Why is it so difficult to contact you directly? Another reason why I am not interested in donating to you. In fact, the biggest reason I won't donate is because you malign, lie and discredit anything to do with alternative or integrative medicine. economy infobox

Question about "and"

Could anyone please tell me what to do if a sentence list someone's professions ends with something like "stage and film actor", i.e., should it be "and stage and film actor" or should there be no "and" before "stage"?--Thylacine24 (talk) 21:25, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

@Thylacine24 - Technically, yes, there should be an 'and' before "stage". But to make it read less awkwardly, you could switch the last items in the list - for instance, instead of "...doctor, philosopher, and stage and film actor.", write "...doctor, stage and film actor, and philosopher." Translation?

Can i Translate another article from a Wikipedia from another language without being it draft? Or in English Wikipedia it should be a whole different article? 1. Short answer, yes. Long answer, WP:ACPERM and if you do this you accept any and all consequences arising from doing so.
2. Note that the English-language Wikipedia has different - usually tougher - standards for sourcing and article content than other language editions. —A little blue Bori v^_^v ^{Jéské Couriano} 22:39, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

WikEd no longer loads even though I have it enabled as a gadget

Deletion of an article
