Help with web citation for Wayback Machine[edit]

Hi,

Text size selection on mobile view[edit]

I am unable to see settings which was earlier available for mobile view of Wikimedia pages.

This is must , please retain this button so that I can start using Wikimedia on mobile again

Rana Ayyub wrote this in March 2015.

The article ends, stating that Bangladeshis were not responsible. After the arrests of the accused, who were convicted, there is an editor's note that the article was written before the arrest. The editor's note was added after the conviction, initially, it was not there.

Contrary to what she wrote, actually, a Bangladeshi was convicted not locals.

She promoted her article twice through her Twitter account and did not delete or gave any updates.

Request for removing the deletion nominations of the articles deleted long back by the user who gave those nominations from my user talk page as they are filling space[edit]

I am a user of Wikipedia . May I draw your attention towards my request for removing the deletion nominations of the articles deleted long back by the user who gave those nominations from my user talk page as they are filling space.

 This is to tell you that I had joined Wikipedia five years ago in the month of April and it's from then I saw that the articles written by me had got speedy deletion nominations as they required original research , references and additional citations and just because I did not understand and unknowingly used to remove the maintenance templates I was given warnings as to not remove them without resolving that particular issue . I then realized my mistake and then did not do any such thing and I did not write any such article again without references , citations and on biographies of living persons after the articles which were nominated for deletion were finally challenged and removed from Wikipedia without knowledge . I did obey all the warnings given to me for my safety.
  So now as I have learnt my lesson and how Wikipedia actually works I request you to remove all those deletion nominations of the articles which were deleted long back after they were nominated for deletion from my user talk page.

Rules about using [donated] artwork for a biography if a photo doesn't exist[edit]

Hi there,
I don't know the rules in the English Wikipedia, that's why I'm asking: Is there are rule about the possibility of using an artwork, like a commissioned painting or drawing, for a biographical article, if there's no photo available? @Jcornelius: Hi there! For living people, it's not permitted because it's theoretically possible for someone to take a photograph and upload it. For deceased people, artwork is OK, like George Washington. GoingBatty (talk) 16:28, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, Jcornelius, there is precedent for what you propose. Until his diplomatic efforts in 2018, there was no freely licensed photo of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. For quite a while, the artistic work File:Kim Jong-Un Photorealistic-Sketch.jpg was the lead image in the article. Cullen328 (talk) 19:17, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The German-speaking Wikipedia community is indeed much stricter on that, as drawings are either considered copyright infringement (when 'copied'/drawn after something already existing) or original research (as based on the fantasy of the artist). Jcornelius and GoingBatty here are some additional thoughts about this interesting issue. The main reason why it is OK to use public domain paintings in George Washington is not because he is dead, but because photography was not yet invented when he was alive. Consider the 5th and 6th presidents of the United States, James Monroe and John Quincy Adams. Monroe died in 1831 and practical photography was invented in 1839 in the form of the daguerreotype, so his biography relies on paintings of him. Adams lived until 1848, so we can use the outstanding photo of him taken by Mathew Brady in the years before his death, and his biography also includes two other photos from his final years. Paintings and an etching are used to illustrate his younger years. As for the policy of the German Wikipedia, I do not know anything about that except what has been stated here. I will say, though, that a skilled portrait painter can study many photos and videos of a person, and then paint an original detailed accurate portrait that is not in any way a copyright violation or a "fantasy".
