February 2[edit]

Acceptance of photo upload[edit]

Could anyone please help troubleshoot? The owner of the photo is trying to upload a freely licensed photo. Hello I have been trying to upload the image onto Wikipedia with no success, this is the message I get: Something went wrong We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons.

I log in and find the system to upload, check the box that says it is my own work, then push Save. The next panel asks for file name, description etc, then I push save and I get that message. I see the button for publish but it is not active, so nothing happens. So what should I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Postmodern Aesthetics (talkcontribs) 03:09, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Postmodern Aesthetics: Hi there! You wrote "I log in and find the system to upload..." What is the exact page that you are on at this step? (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) GoingBatty (talk) 03:32, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GoingBatty!

Thank you for your help. I am absolutely brand new to Wikipedia. I don't know exactly what page I am on, but I know which step I am on in the process... article draft- now it is in the phase of having been submitted and is now waiting for review- I was able to successfully upload a photo. However, the article is about a living person who requested that I change the photo to one taken by a photographer. The original photographer/owner of the photo gave me permission to do so. When I tried, Wikipedia would not accept the accepted licensing designation. So, the actual photographer and original owner of the photo tried to do it through his own Wikipedia account. He was unable to do it either. The error message is a result of original owner of the photo trying to upload it to the article draft. Thank you for any information you have about either how to do it now, or at what point in the future of the process, the option to use the photo will be available. Postmodern Aesthetics (talk) 21:25, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Postmodern Aesthetics: It's hard to troubleshoot the issue without details. What is the URL of the page where the photographer started. What steps worked well? What is the URL of the page where the photographer received the error? What information did the photographer enter on the page? What was the exact error message? GoingBatty (talk) 21:36, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so very much for your patience. I will request the page URL info and post it as soon as it is received. Postmodern Aesthetics (talk) 21:46, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Postmodern Aesthetics: You shouldn't "check the box that says it is my own work" if you did not take the picture. Experienced editors (I'm not that experienced but I know a few things) will tell you that permission, given to you, from the photographer who took the picture is not sufficient -- the picture needs to have its rights released by the photographer for anyone to reuse, commercially or not, worldwide. You cannot perform that release yourself. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 06:53, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for this clarification. I understand what you mean. My first message above isn't clear. The owner and original photographer are one and the same. The statement "I log in..." is from the photographer/owner to me. I used his message to send the inquiry to the help desk as he was asking me what to do, and I have no idea. He said that he released his rights to the photo in Wiki Commons. Postmodern Aesthetics (talk) 07:16, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Postmodern Aesthetics: This help desk is for the English Wikipedia. If the photographer is having an issue uploading an image to Wikimedia Commons, he can use the Commons Help Desk. GoingBatty (talk) 16:19, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for directing me to the correct help desk to troubleshoot this problem. The ultimate goal is to insert the photo into the article, but it is getting thwarted at the Wikipedia Commons step. Thank you again for your patience and willingness to talk through an issue with someone facing a learning curve. Postmodern Aesthetics (talk) 23:38, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How can I publicize a RfC more widely?[edit]

I posted a RfC a week ago. Only 2-3 editors have responded. I would really like to put this to rest because it involves changes that have been made to 25+ additional articles. Only one of these is "high profile", and that's where the RfC is posted, but I'm concerned the material from that article is being "echoed" (if that's the term) by other websites. Meanwhile, I did post requests on two extra project talk pages. Is there more I can do? Thanks. Allreet (talk) 05:37, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I'll give it a try. Allreet (talk) 18:35, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted page[edit]

A close friend of mine had a Wikipedia page. It disappeared one day. I’m fairly convinced her abusive, and very tech savvy, ex deleted the page. How can I get it reinstated? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pageantpros (talkcontribs) 08:30, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Pageantpros It is difficult to help you without knowing the article involved. Note that only administrators can delete pages and articles, and cannot just do so on a whim. I'm not saying that what you claim is impossible, but the processes we have should be preventing such vengeful editing. 331dot (talk) 08:32, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Pageantpros. I'm sorry your friend is subject to an abusive relationship, but please note that it was not "her page", it was Wikipedia's article about her, and subject to Wikipedia's rules and policies. If she dos not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability (and most of us don't!) then the article never should have been created, and would get deleted when somebody noticed. As 331dot says, if you tell us which article, we can investigate further. --ColinFine (talk) 10:08, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Contacting VRT (OTRS)[edit]

Is there any alternative way to contacting VRT other than email? Vitaium (talk) 10:22, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Vitaium The page with contact options is Commons:Contact us. Note that the V in VRT stands for volunteer and they mainly use email for the good reason that it is efficient and gives them a written record. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:53, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New to wikipedia[edit]

Dear sir, I have done research on a topic and i want to put that on wikipedia. Please advice further. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Meethaas (talkcontribs) 11:54, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your interest, but original research isn't permitted on Wikipedia, unless it has been published by independent reliable sources. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:57, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you mean that you have collected published sources and wish to write a summary of what they say, that may be acceptable, Meethaas. But if your research is from unpublished materials, or if you wish to advance any conclusions or arguments, then Wikipedia is not for you, as David says. --ColinFine (talk) 14:24, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Michelle Alyssa Go talk page tag[edit]

How do I add the tag to Talk:Michelle Alyssa Go stating that unsourced information about the suspect must be removed immediately, even though the article is not about a living person? Please {{ping}} me when you reply. --Jax 0677 (talk) 12:47, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jax 0677: I suggest {{BLP others}} -- John of Reading (talk) 12:50, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page move request[edit]

Can someone move the talk page of Yewendoch Guday please? The Supermind (talk) 14:09, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Move from where, The Supermind? I can't see that the article has ever been moved, so why is the talk page not in its normal place? --ColinFine (talk) 14:29, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@The Supermind: The talk page can't be moved because the talk page hasn't even been created. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:39, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@The Supermind: I just created Talk:Yewendoch Guday for you. GoingBatty (talk) 20:49, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Where can I find instructions for this template? I can't work out which one it is[edit]

Hi all

I've been using this template to grab images from other pages for list articles

{{subst:wikidata|property|raw|page=Potato|P18|format=\[\[File:%p {{!}} 50px {{!}} left\]\]}}

Which when saved makes this photo

My question is which template actually is it and where can I find instructions? I'd like the replace the 'page=' field with a Wikidata ID but don't know the code. Thanks to Jts1882 for making me this query in the first place.

Thanks

John Cummings (talk) 16:00, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The template is {{Wikidata}}. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:04, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Editing[edit]

To Whom it May Concern,

I am trying to update and correct misinformation regarding my husband who is also my client. I am his manager and have recently been made aware of many things that are incorrect and when I try and update his page it's saying I have a conflict. Can you please advise?

Kindest Regards,

Lana — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lana Thrasher (talkcontribs) 16:40, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Any information on Wikipedia must be based on reliable and verifiable sources. Presuming you're referring to the article Neil Thrasher, you seem to have removed information without cause and added text that woud better fit in an ad than an encyclopedia. If you actually are, as you say, his manager, you do have a conflict of interest which you should disclose – see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. --Qwerty12302 (talk | contributions) 17:09, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
