The tone of this article is not neutral and rings of advocacy. I wouldn't approve it, on that alone. Wikipedia is not a tool to be used to advance a position. Copyright Violation Detection – EranBot Project

A new copy-paste detection bot is now in general use on English Wikipedia. Come check it out at the EranBot reporting page. This bot utilizes the Turnitin software (ithenticate), unlike User:CorenSearchBot that relies on a web search API from Yahoo. It checks individual edits rather than just new articles. CA Legislature Pages Need Moving

If you go to the California State Legislature page, you will see a list of sessions. The titles of these articles have a high-ascii character in them and I believe they should be changed. I am putting a note on the talk page for some of the sessions also. Please let me know if you can think of a reason why this should not happen.

What one sees now is:

That could be just "2015-16", using a plain old everyday 0x2d hyphen. There is nothing added by this being an em-dash.

Of course, I could be wrong. Please let me know. I will wait a bit before making the moves. Thanx.

Actually, it turns out that I am wrong about this. But the MOS (MOS:DASH) says that if a page has a en dash in its title, there should be a re-direct page that uses a hyphen. I have asked the re-namer to do this. We will see.

This is wrong. 2015–16 is a punctuation error; 2015–16 is correct. Thus an article's initial sentence says:

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, DL, FRS, RA (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955.

The date of birth and date of death are separated by an en-dash. If it had given only the years, it would have said Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, DL, FRS, RA (1874–1965), with no blank space before and after the en-dash. Similarly, ranges of pages use en-dashes, thus: The Gathering Storm pp. 170–71. If a hyphen rather than an en-dash had appeared there, I would have changed it to an en-dash with an edit summary saying I'm correcting a punctuation error. It's used in things like this: "Butterfly fossils date to the mid Eocene epoch, 40–50 million years ago." Note the en-dash in "40–50". It is also used in physical measurements, e.g. 2.5–3 kg, and with letters of the alphabet, e.g. A–F.

South Dakota – mistake?

Greetings all. At talk:South Dakota Wing Civil Air Patrol there is an indication that the page is of interest to WikiProject California. At this point, I'm assuming that this was a mistake of some type, possibly because of a copy/paste error when the article was created. That said, I'm planning to remove the reference in a few days unless someone indicates a rational reason why it should remain. I'm asking that any discussion for the issue continue on that page, especially if there is a reason for it to be there, since the question is likely to come up again and any discussion here will probably get buried in the archives.  Etamni | ✉  05:25, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! I am wondering if anyone in the group has PD photographs of any of Harriet Moody's cottages. Seems if so many of them are protected monuments, the photos would be PD, but I find none on commons. Objectivity of article on Salvation Mountain

The article (esp. the section "The Toxic Nightmare" – simply this title is already hilarious) does not seem very objective, esp. if you read things like the last two sentences which have no citation ("Knight was always extremely careful of what went into his mountain, as he did not want to harm the environment [...]") and are expressing a personal opinion of the author ("Salvation Mountain stands as a monument not only to God or to Knight, but to an ideal and determination."). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.217.141.90 (talk) 22:16, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

EDIT: another example: "In 1998, Knight wanted to expand the mountain a bit.". What is "a bit"? 1% 5% 10%? How many square meters? And how does this sentence even make any sense in comparison to the rest of the section it is in?

How would it be possible "seceed" from the WP:USPLACE rule

It's pretty clear that many locations in California, and for that matter many other states), are commonly referred to by just their names, even though the WP:USPLACE guideline dictates that the state be included in the article title. Such locations include Oakland, Anaheim, and Beverly Hills. It's probably a good idea to create a separate guideline on this WikiProject to account for this discrepancy. I'm not sure what a separate guideline here would accomplish. Per WP:Local consensus, "Consensus among a limited group of editors, at one place and time, cannot override community consensus on a wider scale. For instance, unless they can convince the broader community that such action is right, participants in a WikiProject cannot decide that some generally accepted policy or guideline does not apply to articles within its scope" (emphasis added). What also works against this is that this WikiProject has been relatively semi-active for some time (I alluded to this back in 2010 when I commented that it has been difficult to maintain regular active participants here, as more people seem to want to focus on more specific topics) -- so even if you do get sufficient supporters here to "secede from WP:USPLACE", will they be active when someone challenges it later? The only thing that can basically be said is that "Articles on cities and incorporated towns in California should comply with the WP:USPLACE guidelines: except for Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco (which fall under the so-called 'AP Stylebook rule'), their article titles need the state appended to them". But then, again because of the lack of regular active participants here, there are not really any WikiProject-specific guidelines here anyway. Zzyzx11 (talk) 07:20, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. Spring Valley, Butte County

According to an autobiography of Fred J. Dodge (listed in the references there), he was born in Spring Valley in northern Butte county in 1854. It is not listed as a location in Butte County, California, nor in Spring Valley, California, nor can I find it in contemporary maps. But there is a Spring Valley Elementary School, and a Spring Valley Reservoir in the area, and perhaps a Spring Valley Mountain. There were also companies with Spring Valley in their names from the gold rush days. So it probably was a name used in the 19th century, maybe just a mining camp. If anyone can figure out exactly what/where it was and what the area is now called, I think it should be mentioned as a former name. MB (talk) 16:32, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Not really. It showed that there is a school, reservoir, and a gulch in the area named Spring Valley, just as I found on maps. I'm looking for a little more historical context. I did find a newspaper article on the mining ghost town of Cherokee, California that says the local mines all consolidated into the Spring Valley Mine (Spring Valley Mining & Irrigation Co.) But the GNIS does not show Spring Valley as a variant name of Cherokee. MB (talk) 03:47, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

Anyone in LA?

Hey, I was wondering if there's anyone here that lives in LA that would be able to go take a picture of an art installation for me. I recently created an article for Liquid Shard and I think that the article would be much improved with an image. It's in Pershing Square and should be up until August 11, if anyone can make it up there. I live in Virginia, otherwise I'd totally go and take a picture. There are various pictures up on the Internet, but I'm not sure whether or not any of them would fall under fair use or not. It's a shame I live on the other side of the US – I'd love to see it in person since videos and pictures like this one make it seem like it'd be pretty neat. Announcing WikiConference North America in San Diego, Fri-Mon 7-10 October

I am not a regular participant to this WikiProject, so please excuse my intrusion. Still, I thought this would be of interest. Thanks RightCowLeftCoast for introducing this conference in a previous note here.

I am inviting participants in WikiProject United States to WikiConference North America to be held in San Diego Friday to Monday 7-10 October. Here are further details:

  • We are accepting submissions until 31 August.
  • We are accepting scholarship applications 9 August – 23 August. About 40 scholarships are available only for people in Canada, the US, and Mexico. Last year about 200 people applied for scholarships.
  • More volunteers are needed. In the usual wiki-way, anyone may comment on program submissions. At the conference in person, all staff will be volunteer and all attendees are encouraged check in with conference organizers about volunteering for the task queue even for an hour. Anyone interested may contact FloNight and Rosiestep to offer volunteer support.
  • Major sponsorship for the conference comes from the San Diego Public Library who are providing the venue and a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation.
  • This is the third year of this conference, with WikiConference USA being in New York in 2014 and in Washington DC in 2015. Check the schedules of those for examples of what kinds of programming will be offered this year.

I found that a Los Angeles Times article about Central American students in Los Angeles's Belmont High School is available in Spanish. Therefore I added content to both the English and Spanish versions of Belmont High School (Los Angeles) / es:Escuela Preparatoria Belmont (Los Ángeles)

While most people in California speak good English, some don't. Those of you who know Spanish are encouraged to contribute to the Spanish Wikipedia, especially when the topic is relevant to the Spanish-speaking community and/or involves a city or state government or the federal government. Also pay attention to Spanish language publications like La Opinión and Hoy Los Angeles of the Los Angeles Times. They may have information and points of view not found in the English-language newspapers. To a lesser extent please pay attention to publications in other immigrant languages/languages of foreigners such as Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Arabic, Persian, Armenian, Russian, Hmong, etc. and those of you who know these languages can add content about California to their respective Wikis (White Hmong/Hmong Dawb sadly doesn't have a Wikipedia yet, but if anyone knows people who want to start one please let me know)

US 50,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on. If there's the interest I will start 1000 State Challenges like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of states regularly contributing. Guidelines for assessing importance.

I think we need to review articles to determine whether within this project their importance has been appropriately assessed and that requires defining importance scale. Poaching from elsewhere something like the following:

The criteria used for rating article importance are not meant to be an absolute or canonical view of how significant the topic is. Rather, they attempt to gauge the probability of the average reader of investigating California needing to look up the topic (and thus the immediate need to have a suitably well-written article on it). Thus, subjects with greater popular notability may be rated higher than topics which are arguably more "important" but which are of interest primarily to students of Wikipedia.

Note that general notability need not be from the perspective of editor demographics; generally notable topics should be rated similarly regardless of the country or region in which they hold said notability. Thus, topics which may seem obscure to a Western audience—but which are of high notability in other places—should still be highly rated.

Long Beach template

Hi, guys! I notice the Template:Long Beach, California was deleted back in 2011 by a discussion here: Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2011 March 11#Template:Long Beach, California – Only one other user participated, and the rationale was "Well-linked articles which do not need a navbox. Photo request for Los Angeles Wikipedians?

Hey, all- I'm working on Mexican Repatriation, which is currently unillustrated. There is a plaque at the LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes that commemorates the repatriation, but I've been unable to find an appropriately licensed image to use in the article. I was wondering if anyone here might be able to swing by (when the weather clears ;) and take a picture for me/the article? San Francisco-based Tides (organization)

Hello, I am looking for editors interested in California-based organizations for help improving Tides (organization). I left a note on the San Francisco Bay Area task force, but I figured I should leave a message here, too. I placed an request for edits on the Tides Talk page to update and fix inaccuracies in the introduction and infobox. For those who do not know, Tides is a public charity and fiscal sponsor whose work focuses on social equality, human rights, the environment, education and health. Quatloos.com

It's not an important article, and it looks fairly similar to a stub, but the Quatloos.com article now reflects the entirety of RS mentions for Quatloos!. It'll never be a GA, just because it's lacking some basics (even if I forced a Lead into the article, I'd need to replicate almost the entire body to satisfy the Lead length requirements). However, I'd suggest that it's now "well organized and essentially complete", so should be bumped up to an A grade. A quick review would be appreciated. Blake Ricciardi

Would someone from this WikiProject take a look at Blake Ricciardi? I am unable to find any sources which show that this person in Wikipedia notable enough for a stand-alone article per WP:GNG or WP:BIO. Googling gets a number of hits, but these seem to be mainly primary sources or trivia mentions and not the significant coverage in independent reliable sources needed for Wikipedia notability. It has been suggested that the article be taken to AfD, but I'm asking here to see if someone might be aware of better sources which can be used. The article was recently heaviy edited by an IP (most likely someone connected to the subject) who turned it into a mish-mash over promotional content. It was also most likely created by someone connected to subject. The article has been restored to the last table version before the IP editing, but even that doesn't seem good enough to avoid AfD. For several years, there has been an effort to edit into Wikipedia a false revisionist version of early California history. The central false claim is that in 1836 (or before), California freed itself from Mexico and became an independent republic like Texas. Revisionist favorite articles include California Republic, Juan Bautista Alvarado, and List of Governors of California before 1850. Somewhere under the tinsel

Does somebody at the Project have access to actual back issues of Variety or something? There are ridiculously high boxoffice numbers here (& elsewhere), which are (I'm told) supposed to represent annual take on release. The trouble is, they're sourced to websites using lifetime take, & that number is the one being used, which (I'm also told) is supposed to be reserved for the page on the individual film (which is confusing enough...). So, I'm hoping somebody has access to a source that records the actual number for the year & the film in question. Any help would be enormously welcomed (by me, anyhow). Request Review – The Phenomenauts

Hello, I'd like to request an assessment please for The Phenomenauts. I see the Assessment FAQ mentions I can edit it myself, but I recently made a large number of changes and I'd like to have someone independent take a look.

This article has been largely untouched for the past 6-10 years, and I recently made a number of edits. I have added: 109 references; five new free images; 3 new non-free images; four sample audio clips (all within fair use sizes); subtitles for the audio clips; and a band member timeline chart. I have added roughly 4,000 words to the article. I have grouped it into sections, and tried to do several passes at copyediting. I have tried to make it follow the WikiProject Musicians article guidelines. I would like to propose it could now be rated as at least B class. Feedback is quite welcome. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

California is the only US state whose articles on its counties do not include a list of all the adjacent counties in the Geography section

Is anybody on or within reach of the UCB or the Stanford campus and would be able to get a pic of a kiwibot for the Kiwi Campus page I have just perpetrated? I believe it would have to be uploaded here rather than on Commons, with a fair use rationale, since presumably the appearance of the robots is proprietary. Thanks in advance to anyone willing and able; my camera is on its last legs and I think it will be easier to catch one at Berkeley, which is a bit of a lengthy and costly trip for me. Is this the place to raise questions about California legislature history?

I am not American, and I failed to find a comprehensive history of the legislature and government of California between when it became a State in 1850 and somewhere around the 1970s. My first attempt to find out whether I merely failed to find the articles or if they don't exist is at Talk:Members of the California State Legislature#History? What came before these lists?. The driver that got me looking was a discussion at Talk:John Cain (junior)#Requested move 9 January 2019 about renaming an article about one of the Australian John Cains to better distinguish it from his father and son who were and are also John Cain. I wanted to improve the disambiguation page by adding birth and death years for the Californian politician John Edward Cain. I could not find them, or even what years he served in the legislature or which district he represented. Have I missed an entire suite of articles about historic lists of memberships and electoral districts, or do they not exist for California? --Scott Davis Talk 11:58, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

Native names for landforms in California

Cristiano Tomás has added a number of Spanish |native_name= to landforms in California (see, e.g., Manzanita Lake, Novato Creek, Carrizo Plain). Zzyzx11 has disputed these Spanish names, because they are not verifiable: they do not appear to be based on reliable sources.

Are there reliable sources for the use of these Spanish names as native names, e.g., before California became part of the United States? I have found a few, and would encourage editors to find more. —hike395 (talk) 08:48, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

To clarify my objection: my understanding with many of the infoboxes is that |native_name= should be only used if the majority language spoken in the area was not English at the time that place or geographical feature was named. Just because these names have Spanish etymology does not give carte blanche to just merely post literal Spanish translations without any evidence that they were ever used as common or official names. Otherwise, you are just posting an unsourced assumption/original research. For example, artificial lakes that were created in the 20th Century, when English was now the common/majority language in California. I have no objections for those features whose names existed when they were still in Native American/Spanish/Mexican/etc. rule, per se. But again, we should not automatically assume literal English-to-Spanish translations. Zzyzx11 (talk) 08:56, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

I think this is overall a very good new article. I went ahead and made some relatively minor changes, the largest of which was removing the reference to Frank Gehry from the note at the top. I think it's a spurious detail that doesn't contribute to the article.
I also think that having ", California" in the article title is unnecessary given that there presumably isn't another museum with the exact same name as this one, unless the actual name of the museum includes ", California" at the end. But I will hold off on moving the article to allow for more discussion. TitanAndromeda 00:39, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

@Swper: Ah good point, I didn't realize that the two museums technically have the same name. I think in that case, using "(California)" and "(Minnesota)" at the end of each title would be appropriate, rather than being after commas. There's also the question of whether the article titles should call each museum a different name; I think the convention is to use the most common name even if it isn't the formal name. Category renaming discussion: Sierra Pelona Mountains -> Sierra Pelona Ridge

FYI: there is a category renaming discussion at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2019 November 1#Category:Sierra Pelona Mountains for renaming of Category:Sierra Pelona Mountains to Category:Sierra Pelona Ridge to match the name which is actually supported by its USGS GNIS source. New bot to remove completed infobox requests

Cleaning up all those GNIS location articles

I've noticed there are a massive amount of one or two sentence articles for GNIS placenames in California that are plainly not notable. I've started working on El Dorado County, one of the worst offenders, at User:CJK09/California locations cleanup/El Dorado County. In addition to figuring out which of these location articles are non-notable and should go through the deletion process, I'm also going to be working on expanding the ones for which information exists beyond a name and which are actually notable. This is way too big to take on myself for the entire state but there are hundreds of not thousands of these articles cluttering up the California county pages and templates and many others. If others want to contribute you're welcome to join in. I may end up moving it to project space in that case. CJK09 (talk) 23:53, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Per WP:NGEO, a populated location without legal recognition is considered notable if it fulfills WP:GNG (significant coverage in reliable sources). WP:NGEO excludes mentions in "tables" (which I presume covers the GNIS database?). It would seem that many of the GNIS locations would not be notable under this criterion.
Back in 2009, we had a discussion about this, and User:Polaron came up with an idea: merge all of the GNIS stubs into a single list article, one per county. I personally think this is an excellent idea, and would be willing to do this for a few counties in Eastern California.
Would other editors be willing to merge these into list articles? Should the discussion go to AfD? — hike395 (talk) 01:56, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
It's probably best to avoid too many runs through AfD to avoid wasting everyone's time. I'd envision starting out with PRODs and then doing large batch AfDs of the ones where the PROD gets removed for whatever reason. CJK09 (talk) 03:40, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
I would recommend doing things in the following order:
  1. Create the list articles per county
  2. Modify the county navbox templates
  3. PROD/AfD discussion process.
This way, if the PROD/AfD process fails (which is possible), at least we'll have the navboxes pointing at the list articles instead of the individual articles. What do you think? — hike395 (talk) 05:01, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Just finished El Dorado County (User:CJK09/California locations cleanup/El Dorado County). Phew, that was exhausting. I've found redirect targets for a lot of the non-notables, but not all of them. That's only one county in one state, and several CA counties are far far worse. Kern in particular looks nightmarish to clean up. This is gonna take a lot of time and a lot of manpower. Soon I'll redirect the ones with suitable targets and PROD or batch AfD the rest; the ones with no redirect targets are so non-notable (many of them are literally just someone's last name that ended up on an early map) that I truly don't see the point of even putting them into a list. @CJK09: I'm interested in helping out with this, starting with my home county of San Diego. I think setting up the working areas for each county in Project space is probably a good idea in case others want to take counties as well, that way it isn't spread across various userspaces.
What sort of naming and format are we envisioning for each county's consolidated list article? Perhaps [[List of unincorporated communities in <county name>, California]]? TitanAndromeda 22:10, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
@TitanAndromeda and Hike395: Yesterday I looked through some archive discussions on the GNIS spam issue. The format someone suggested in this discussion looks pretty good. I'm sure I could code up a JS script to automate turning county navboxes into tables of that format, with the coords and all. Then for the ones that are notable, we can provide a sentence or two description in its entry in the table, and then link to its article.
However, there are some that really aren't even worthy of inclusion in such a table. For example, if you look at the Likely valley in Modoc County, you'll see that there's about a dozen individual ranches in that valley that ended up in GNIS somehow and then got turned into Wikipedia articles.
I'm going to turn WP:Wikiproject California/GNIS cleanup WP:Wikiproject California/GNIS cleanup task force into the root directory for further work, and move my work so far to there from my userspace. If people are interested in working on it in other states, we could move it to the USA wikiproject later on. California is far from the only state with this problem, even if we have it worse than most.
Finally, I don't know what other people's deletion standards are (I'm pretty inclusionist, but a lot of this stuff just clutters up the encyclopedia), but the rule of thumb I'm using is if it were ever a populated community (not a road station or railway depot or whatever, an actual community – basically if it's a place someone might say they are from), or if it has received SIGCOV, it should stay; otherwise it should go. Thanks again for working on this! For further background, we've established in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Susie, Washington (industrial rail spurs incorrectly labeled as "populated places" and sadly repeated elsewhere) and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and countless others (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Geography) that the GNIS is unreliable at accurately classifying entries as "populated places", including many that are elsewhere marked as locales. Even when actually places that are or were populated, they are often subdivisions or otherwise do not meet WP:GEOLAND#1 for automatic notability.
Hike395, it's great that you called out this mass-production and errors in the GNIS a decade ago, and It's really disheartening how Carlossuarez46 shot you (and me!) down and has left us to clean up this mess of 2000+ one-line "articles". I'll note that these are already marked in List of places in California (A) etc. but having these by county could be good as well. I made List of places in California sortable but it's too big to be very usable. Just redirecting each article to one of these lists or to their county's article would work too. A question

Is there a name for the system of ridge-and-valley foothills along the western side of the Sacramento Valley from approximately Wilbur Springs in the south to Paskenta in the north? Collapsed tables do not open headers?

In most of the California county pages I've looked at, the (sortable) tables are all collapsed to a title line using 'collapsible' and 'collapsed'. In my environment, at least (Chrome on Linux) when I show these tables, the headers fail to show. In most cases this means the table is impossible to understand, it's just columns of numbers with no context. And of course, without the headers they are not sortable, either.

Changing the classes to (apparently now preferred) 'mw-collapsible' and 'mw-collapsed' fixes this problem locally (to some extent-- the way the tables are built, when they collapse the headers are still visible) but it seems to be a systemic issue across many pages. I've not looked across wikipedia more generally, only at some California county pages, so I don't know how widespread this is. I'm hoping an experienced editor knows where and how to fix this problem.

I just spent some effort cleaning up, organizing, removing superfluous content, and adding missing content to this article. I welcome any reviews or feedback. I realize placing it in sections now makes the look and feel different than other similar state articles, but I think those other articles could also benefit from sectioning the data for easier reading.   • @Jlw040: You seem to be on the right track. Here are a few suggestions:
1) Consider starting the section with a brief one or two sentence explanation of what the "controversy" is. That way people won't have to read the entire section, unless they want the details.
2) The section is long enough, you might want to organize it into subsections so people can zero in on what they are most interested in about the controversy, but the length doesn't necessarily require subsections.
3) I recommend including a very brief definition of "hauling out" when you first use it in the body. I know you have a link in the lead of the article, but I think a brief clarifying definition is always helpful for such an unusual term.
4) Normally external links (links that take you outside Wikipedia) are not acceptable when they are imbedded within the body of the article. If necessary to support the article, they can be placed in a separate section at the end of the article called "External links". See Wikipedia:External links. External links such as "Hanan & Associates" and "La Jolla Swim Club" should not be imbedded. OvertAnalyzer (talk) 23:15, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

I was left with one question. It sounds like the problem started in 2013, but it does not explain what happened to trigger this. Is it a growing population of animals, are they moving south for some reason, or are there other factors involved? If you don't know, that is fine, but it might be helpful to explain that if you do know. Good luck with your assignment, and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. @OvertAnalyzer: My understanding is that, since their protection by the MMPA in the early 70s, the population of CSLs has quickly bounced back from over-harvesting for their oil and hides. The Southern California population(s) were inhabiting the Channel Islands and using them as a rookery (place where they breed) but are "overflowing" onto mainland California. La Jolla serves them well because orcas and great whites aren't terribly common, and with the marine reserve they have plenty of food to support this new growing population. Area Code Map

This question concerns the California Area Code pages, which are listed under the broader umbrella of WikiProject California. There is an error in the area code listings. The northern portion of Mono County is in the 530 area code. However, the most detailed listing of that area code is missing this. The county listing under 530 reads ". . . . . Modoc County, Nevada County . . . ." It leaves out Mono County. To edit would require the changing of several links, something beyond my Wikipedia skills. Eventually I was looking for a map that would show enough detail to determine the exact southern boundary of the 530 area code. Current Fruitvale Bridge page references three different bridges.

(Also posted to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject California/San Francisco Bay Area task force) This one page is presenting info for the original 1894 Fruitvale railroad-only bridge that was later converted to car usage in 1951, the 1951 Fruitvale railroad-only bridge adjacent to the old bridge, and the 1974 road vehicle bridge built in place of the 1894 bridge. Slab city ownership

Does anyone know what happened after a private developer bought it in 1993? I am reading that it was bought by a developer https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1994-02-20-9402200304-story.html but I'm reading on NPR that it is owned by the state as of 2012. https://www.npr.org/2012/01/24/145645412/down-and-out-escape-to-slab-in-california-desert So, did the state buy it back? Redwood National and State Parks

Redwood National and State Parks is an older FA promotion. As part of WP:URFA/2020, all FAs promoted before 2015 and not having undergone WP:FAR since then are being checked to make sure they comply with current standards. The goal is to get any ones with issues back up to the requirements and avoid FAR. This one needs a few straggling inline citations, and the recreation section needs checked to make sure the various details about camping rights and such haven't changed since 2008. Reduce rate of PRODs and AFDs

I noticed there are way too many proposed deletions recently. There might not be enough time to evaluate all of time. Unfortunately this means quite a lot of useful information might be deleted. In some cases, rather than deletion, alternatives such as a merge or redirect or collection into a list article could be considered. Thanks for the ping, DreamLinker, and the good suggestions – merge, redirect, or compile list articles of the lesser known places. The ones that I am concerned about are those places that are no longer "settlements" but in the past were used by Native Americans (some of which were actual villages), or those that historically were settlements but entirely burned down (such as Scovern Hot Springs, California.) Some are notable as former mining camps, stagecoach stops, historical water sources, etc. Perhaps the weeding-out process could be conducted differently. I feel quite strongly that lesser known places associated with indigenous peoples' history belong in this encyclopedia. I realize that would slow down the process of stub clean up, but I think its better in the long run. Netherzone (talk) 15:59, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
Very happy to discuss ways of dealing with this issue. However, we should get it straight first that I (and I believe the other people working on this issue) are not simply deleting articles willy-nilly without first checking that they cannot be saved. What we are struggling with is the sheer scale of the problem created by massive-scale negligent article-creation. It is not that the person who created the majority of these articles was purposefully vandalizing the encyclopedia, it is simply that, despite being an admin at the time, they did not care about any of the rules in place even at the time they were doing it (2009) regarding notability.
These deletions are necessary work as probably 90% or more of the articles created by the creator during their campaign of mass-article creation do not meet WP:GEOLAND. As they are present on Wiki they inevitably find their way into other collections of data, and thus take on a life of their own outside Wiki.
I hope the others will not object if I say that we are very alive to the problem of these PRODs/AFDs clogging up the various forums that have to deal with them and creating unnecessary work for admins. Indeed I and others have pointed out that this is the effect of these deletions having to be done one-by-one. It should be noted, though, that in every instance where we have tried to deal with these issues in bulk, formal reasons have been found not to do it (see e.g., here, where a clear consensus to delete all was not acted on). No-one will bother doing all the work of preparing a bulk deletion if in every occasion it turns out to be pointless. Instead they will use forums where at least deletion can occur (e.g., PRODs/AFDs).
A very obvious way to avoid having to go through these one-by-one would be for the creator of the vast majority of the problematic articles numbering in the thousands, Carlossuarez46, to speedy-delete the ones that have not been substantially edited since they created them in 2009. However, they have been unwilling to do this and have engaged only very minimally with the process of clearing up these articles (see their talk page here and here). To second FOARP, we've been going through these looking at the merits of each individually, as far as I'm aware of. I personally have a four or five-part test to go through the California ones that I apply to them. I'm unaware of a single one that I've checked against my test and failed every single point that have not been deleted. Also to keep in mind that we have discovered that the source Durham is either misinterpreted or fabricated in most of its usages. Additionally, some redirections/mergers are going on, but aren't as visible. Such as when I determined through research that the stub at Union Shed, California was actually an early name for the site of Sheridan, California, so I added an explanation to the Sheridan page and redirected. From what I've seen (unless I missed something), this cleanup has been conducted in a reasonable and not overboard manner. The fact that over a thousand of these has been deleted over the course of several months is because almost 2,000 of these were mass-created with no real regard for accuracy or how the source actually describes these places. Thirding FOARP. I would love to just redirect these to pages like List of places in California, as was agreed upon at User talk:Reywas92#Mass deletions, but User:Tavix reverted my first batch of redirects and prodded them instead. I have now gone though every single "former settlement" cited only to Durham's California Geographic Named – most of which are misrepresentations, as Durham mentions "a place" on a map or a post office rather than a settlement of any notability – and prodded every one; the ones from yesterday are the final batch of those, but there are still many supposed "unincorporated communities" and non-obvious former ones still to go (not to mention other states). The main places list previously included the full list before being split by letter so I think if the redirects were to the subpages like List of places in California (A) that include the names that would be more satisfactory to Tavix than to the main page. I'm of the opinion that the non-verifiable ones should be deleted rather than redirected, anyway. The thing deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ash Log, Kentucky should probably not have a redirect to a hypothetical List of places in Kentucky because Ash Log as a toponym is barely even verifiable, much less notable. Redirection would work fine for a lot of these place stubs, but a few just need deleted as there's nothing useful about peddling GNIS errors when there was never anything at the site at all. I favour redirection only because it can be done in bulk and results in less harmful articles. Ultimately a non-notable place just shouldn't have an article on here, though, and made-up "ghost towns" and "unincorporated communities" should be nuked with extreme prejudice. Carlos's negligent article-creation led to the situation where until this clean-up project started there were counties in California with more than twice as many "ghost towns" listed than there were presently inhabited communities – a plainly ridiculous situation. The overwhelming majority of these "Ghost towns" turn out to be, on closer inspection, railway sidings, road/rail junctions, farms, factories, warehouses, wharves, camps, mines, individual buildings etc. Of the remainder many are actually just different names for presently-existing communities.
Please note that I am far from a deletionist, my record at AFD was (rarely for people who do a lot of work there) more keep !votes than delete !votes until I started working on this clean-up project. My initial response was "Surely GNIS and Durham are reliable sources? Why are people deleting these articles?" until I saw the scale of what Carlos had done, and how very little time had been spent in the creation of each article (maybe ~1-2 minutes for each at most?). Even for PRODs we are probably spending 2-3 times longer simply PRODing the article than Carlos did creating them!
My personal view is that Carlo's behaviour reverses the presumption that we should assume they were acting in good faith when they created these articles: they plainly weren't. I don't like engaging in mind-reading but, forced to guess, I think it was their ranking on this list that was uppermost in their minds when they created these articles. Doing a WP:TNT on the entire corpus of WP:V/WP:GEOLAND-failing stubs they created is justifiable in that circumstance. FOARP (talk) 09:36, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

My concern is just to reduce the speed a bit. Like maybe, do it county by county. It would be helpful if, let's say a list of all non-verifiable places in that county could be compiled (maybe in a subpage of this project?). Then we could go over that list, find sources if required. Do a local consensus to redirect. For those that contain some information to be salvaged, we could merge/redirect it. I’m wondering if Hog Farm would be willing to share their five-part test. That could be a useful tool moving forward. The ones that are errors, non-verifiable or non-notable should be deleted. I like Reywas92’s suggestion to redirect some of them to List of places in California (A). I will continue to keep an eye out for stubs that are either associated with historical indigenous settlements or with water sources (like hot springs :-) ), and will improve them if I can find reliable sources. Netherzone - My five part test utilizes the resources I have available. The first step is to look on GNIS for the location. If the location existed after 1910 and isn't in GNIS, there's a good chance it's not notable. Then, using the coordinates I pulled from GNIS, I search the coordinates in the USGS topographic maps database. The maps and GNIS aren't enough to show a place as notable, but they can identify a lot of the non-community features. I've been able to diagnose stubs as non-community features such as railroad sidings, individual ranches, and in a couple cases natural features such as ponds or canals misentered into GNIS as communities. I have access to newspapers.com through WP:LIBRARY, so I use that as the third step. In places where there are old newspapers on the site (some going back into the 1800s), you can generally figure out what something is. Step four is checking the google books preview of Gudde's California Place Names, which generally only lists significant features. Gudde also has a book about gold camps, which is useful to check for supposed mining features. The last step is to run a standard WP:BEFORE, with Google books generally being a better bet than Google search, as Google search is almost hopelessly polluted with clickbait and mirrors of both GNIS and Wikipedia. This article needs updating

(1) The term "eastern California" is (a) ambiguous and (b) too general. 

     (a) The term may refer to the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada OR California's eastern counties. Since the fault zone is described as located in "the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada," the term "eastern slope" must refer to the eastern counties.
     (b) However, this is too general a description. If the fault zone is a suture threaded through the Smartville Block, then specific counties need to be cited.

A map would be useful. This could be provided by linking to USGS: however see #2 and #3 below.

@Sdkb and DocFreeman24: Honestly I'd much prefer to attempt to rehabilitate them than just toss them aside, especially since it would probably be more work in the long-run to adjust the documentation everywhere and back-end tooling (templates, assessment, categories, etc.) as it would to brainstorm some ways of getting the project in front of the eyeballs of the right editors and jump-start them back to life. I'm currently in the process of giving a lot of that infrastructure a fresh coat of paint (see Category:FM-Class California State University articles for an example of the new category page design and {{Cal Invitation/calstate}} for my test case with the invitation template, among others) would like to see if I can enlist a few others volunteers to help me spread them around once everything's polished up nice and shiny. Certainly no objection here. My only concern is that this Wikiproject does not seem particularly active even at the highest levels so it made sense to try and consolidate and clean things up a bit to centralize things and hopefully bring more editors together. Yeah, there's the activity concern is one issue, but I'm really here because of the duplication. I've recently been working on a group of pages at the eastern end of Los Angeles County—is that the L.A. task force, the Inland Empire task force, the SoCal task force, or all three? Navbox color

The navboxes for California topics use a rather jarring golden yellow, defined at Template:California/color. I'm not sure whether or not it complies with the contrast accessibility guidelines at MOS:COLOR and whether or not it has any official status (it does look like blue and gold are the state colors). Does anyone want to look into it and see if we ought to change it? {{u|Sdkb}} talk 23:12, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

I tested the color at [1] as a background color for black text, link text, and visited link text (per WP:COLOR), and found that all three of those cases passed the WCAG AA contrast level. Ranchos of California infobox suggested

I believe the individual articles for the ranchos found in the List of ranchos of California would benefit from an infobox. Suggested contents are readily available from the list itself:

  • Map / illustration
  • Grant name
  • Date
  • Grantor
  • Grantee

  • Land case number
  • Location (city, county)
  • Coordinates (center of grant?)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

LendingClub History request help

Hello! I'm dropping by to see if an editor might have an interest in helping me with an edit request for the LendingClub page. As an LC employee I can't edit the company page directly but instead must rely on other volunteers to review my requests. I didn’t have much luck at WP Finance and investment, so I thought here might be a good place to go next.

consolidated steel

The Consolidated Steel Corporation should probably be adopted by the project. I don't have numbers but it looks like it was LA's largest construction business (and a continuation of Llewellyn IW and Baker IW which i believe were the 2 most significant ones before they merged). They also did substantial things for the rest of the world. Lots of ships and the tubes for at least one big pipeline abroad. If one digs deeper, it is likely they had their fingers many Californian projects.

Julian C. Messic (1889-1961)

Does anyone have any sources, or ideas as to where to find sources, for a Californian female architect called Julian Messic? The spelling of the name varies; I think the full name was Charlotte Julian Messic, but I have seen C. Julian Messic, Julian C. Messic, and also Mesic with a single "s". I think her dates were 1889-1961, and she worked as a draughter in the office of Julia Morgan, of Hearst Castle fame. Commons does actually have an image. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Since the Inland Empire group seems to have migrated to here, I would like to request opinions on a change to the article on Zzyzx.

A sentence I added to the "Popular Culture" section of the article on Zzyzx was removed by an editor; I personally think this was inappropriate.
