WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:37, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Ash River in South Africa, or in Minnesota?

The Ash River article says that it is in South Africa, and gives details. Maybe so, but the references are all for Minnesota. Big time confusion! Could someone interested in Minnesota please clear up the confusion? --DThomsen8 (talk) 16:25, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Music of Minnesota

Hello. I am amazed at this project's list of participants. We have a featured article review of Music of Minnesota going on for four months. That is the longest running FAR in Sandy's memory and I think it is the world's longest! So you have all had plenty of time. I don't believe you if you say you are a participant in WikiProject Minnesota but haven't taken the time to consider this article. Where are your votes? -SusanLesch (talk) 17:44, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Let me try to adjust my attitude. Bobak, Jonathunder and Bobamnertiopsis, I know you guys are still active, as are a lot of others (sorry to mention you by name but you came to mind). Could you kindly weigh in on Wikipedia:Featured article review/Music of Minnesota/archive1? Doncram took the time, so can you please? -SusanLesch (talk) 18:48, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Minnesota Inventors Congress

Perhaps someone should consider creating a page for the Minnesota Inventors Congress. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008 and is the first inventors convention of its kind world wide. A few other states have created similar conventions based off of Minnesota's. It is a real asset to Minnesota and deserves its own page. Wkaardal (talk) 00:52, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Minnesota/Archive 7/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Minnesota/Archive 7/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 00:31, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

FYI: this passed GA. I believe that, writing quality aside, it is meets most FA criteria. However, from my last attempt to push an article into FA I know that my writing ability falls short of FA standards. If any particularly talented writers are looking to put another FA on their list of accomplishments please feel free to edit away on this one. Saint Thomas, MN?

The artist Mike Ploog talks about a possibly unincorporated town called Saint Thomas, Minnesota, located near Mankato. I can find out very little about it -- pretty much just this single map entry at Mapquest. Perhaps someone in this project who knows the area better can create a page for it, if it still (presumably) exists. With regards, -- Tenebrae (talk) 04:04, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Mill City Museum

I need help editing a draft of the Mill City Museum article. Also please consider contributing to the discussion on the Washburn A Mill article Talk:Washburn A Mill, Washburn A Mill constitutes part, but not all of the Mill City Museum, so I need to know if it would be better to place the article under Mill City Museum or place a redirect on the Washburn A Mill article. Thank you. Wkaardal (talk) 20:35, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

I think the article would work better as a standalone, with it referenced as the main article under the "Mill City Museum" heading on the Washburn page. Minnecologies (talk) 13:54, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

I was wondering if anyone with any in-depth sources on Minnesotan geography could help me with a problem I'm running into. I recently started an article on Lake Abita, which appears according to several surveys of the region to be the Minnesotan lake with the highest surface elevation. However, the measurements I'm seeing aren't adding up. Lake Superior has a surface elevation of 600 feet. Lake Abita is supposed to be 1349 feet higher, with an elevation of 2048 feet, but 600+1349=1949. Furthermore, it's supposed to sit only thirty feet below the summit of Brule Mountain, which is at 2226 feet, but 2048 + 30 != 2226.

Unfortunately, Lake Abita has a very poor internet presence, and none of the public domain books I can find on Google can explain this discrepancy. Does anyone know of a better source that might explain this? Norstrem (talk) 18:45, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

The contours on the topo maps appear to put it between 2040 and 2060.
You might want to look at the DNR's lakefinder tool for some other information, and the GNIS entry which gives 2051' as the elevation. Kablammo (talk) 13:13, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

The highway 24 bridge article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_24_Bridge contains an error in the data box on the right. Minnesota articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Minnesota articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 23:20, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 20:11, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

The article Meadowlands Park has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for references found only wiki mirrors, fails WP:N and WP:V

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Jeepday (talk) 19:43, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Collaboration with the Wine Project on Minnesota wine articles?

Hello! For 2011 the Wine Project is doing a new Wine Improvement Drive where each month we focus on an area of articles that relate to a particular theme. In January, we are are ringing in the New Year with New World wine, with a focus on the wines of the Northern Hemisphere-Canadian wine, American wine and Mexican wine. I am going by related projects to see if there is any interest in collaboration between this project and the wine project on the subject of
Some ideas could be help expanding important stubs such as the main Minnesota wine article, Alexandria Lakes AVA, Edelweiss (grape), Minnesota 78 as well creation of articles on some of Elmer Swenson's hybrid grapes produced for the Minnesota climate and often in conjunction with the University of Minnesota.Another idea would be creating articles on notable wineries such as Alexis Bailly Vineyard and Winery and Carlos Creek Winery. On a smaller scale, there are Minnesota wine related articles that could use some help with clean up or expanding beyond a stub such as the articles on Morgan Creek Vineyards (Minnesota) and Minnesota Grape Growers Association. And, of course, of HUGE help would be the upload of free use photos of Minnesota wineries, wines and wine regions to Commons that could be used to better illustrate Minnesota wine articles. If you're interested in helping, please drop a note at the Wine Project's talk page with the article you're interested in helping with. Thanks and have a great New Year! Possibly unfree File:MNStateFairButterHead2005.jpg

Begin Short Rant-- I see the copyright trolls are out again. I'm significantly more aware of copyright issues than your average person, even probably more so than the average Wikipedia contributor. Copyright is a valuable tool when used correctly and with good intent. It drives me more than a little nuts that some people (and this seems to be especially true on Wikipedia) see copyright as a binary issue, things are either free and clear or they are not. The truth is (and this is something incredibly difficult for some people to understand) that the law is a very fuzzy thing, subject to lots of interpretations by lots of different people. This is especially true in copyright/IP law which is significantly derived from messy caselaw and varies regionally, even within the US. One of the most frustrating aspects from a contributor's standpoint is that we are held to such high and lofty standards here by these "copyright defenders" while commercial entities, whether World Book Encyclopedia in the 1960s or a commercial website today, would just take a post the information or photo without thinking twice about the copyright issue. A very real problem for us is trying to get permission for many of these things because it's very unclear who owns the copyright to so much stuff anyway! Take this specific example... The copyright might be held by the person being sculpted, the sculptor, the state fair, the state ag society or the state itself depending on how contracts are written. In my experience many of these ongoing traditions are very loose and based on a "handshake contract" if event that and don't deal with the copyright issues at all. Further complicating the issue for fair use are whether it is considered public display, permanent public display (as it is disposable) or private display. At the end of the day it is most likely that no one cares at all except these copyright defenders/trolls (which is why the commercial entities get away with just ignoring the copyright issue). How annoying! --End Rant

So can someone deal with this? File:MNStateFairButterHead2005.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the file's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the file description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you are interested in it not being deleted. --BenFranske (talk) 20:53, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:15, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. When tracking the fourth dimension, topic, the related article lists tool (such as for U.S. article lists tool) also might be useful by filtering on categories of interest.

If you do decide to use this tool, feel free to update Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages as well.

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Minnesota to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Minnesota/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 00:57, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

1916 Wabasha jail

1916 Wabasha jail

Please consider this a high-priority photo request. The 1916 Wabasha jail will be demolished before the end of this month. The Rochester Post-Bulletin had a front page article about it yesterday: "Old county jail has nearly a century of stories"

The only photo I have of the place is old and not very good. I am very busy this month and it will be difficult for me to get more before it's gone. Can anyone help? Jonathunder (talk) 16:36, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Is that this: [1] I'll do my best to get down there if no one else can... RxS (talk) 21:54, 6 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes, that's the location. If you go, there's a lot of other stuff in Wabasha worth seeing. There's a lovely old Episcopal church around the corner from the jail. The National Eagle Center, downtown on the River, is worth a trip. And there are good restaurants, including Slippery's Tavern (of Grumpy Old Men fame) and a great bakery. Jonathunder (talk) 23:09, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm not too far from there and off today, I could head up there this afternoon and grab some shots. Mazzmn (talk) 18:21, 7 July 2011 (UTC) Ok, I'm not sure what you had in mind for updated photos, but it was a nice day so I went out to grab a few shots...The blue sign on the front was laying on the porch. I have another wide shot of the front, but the trees were so big I had to shoot from a strong angle. I'm new to this so suggestions welcome (hmm forgot to take a geo coordinate, but I think my friend took a pic with his iphone so some shots were taken from 44.37966667,-92.02950000) Mazzmn (talk) 04:26, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Minneapolis - St Paul Beltway

I recently discovered Talk:Minneapolis - St Paul Beltway, an orphaned talk page. It normally would qualify for speedy deletion, but it has enough content that it should be looked over by someone who (unlike me) is familiar enough with Minnesota highways to know what content would be useful. Please tag it with {{db-g8}} once you're done mining it for information or once you conclude that nothing of its content is needed. Nyttend (talk) 22:34, 29 October 2011 (UTC)

Survey reading aid

I would very much appreciate it if anyone who has experience reading old surveys could tell me what arcane system for demarcating geographic regions this source is using when it gives the source and principle tributaries for the Poplar River on page 523. Thus far this is the only source I can find to actually name a lake as the river's source, and I'd very much like to be able to put a real name down instead of the coordinates, but I can't very well do that presently, as I have no idea what they mean.

Anybody seen them before? Norstrem (talk) 01:47, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

These are coordinates used by the Public Land Survey System. Your report says the source of the river is a lake in Section 11, Township 62 North, Range 3 West. Your principal meridian there would be fourth. This tool can give you latitude/longitude based on those (but seems to require Google Earth for full functionality). WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Minnesota will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Minnesota's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 00:27, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

25 Feb event at Minneapolis Central Library

In November, a librarian from Hennepin County Library announced an event scheduled for 25 February at Minneapolis Central Library, see WT:Meetup/Minnesota. There haven't been any discussions and very few users appear to have noticed (I only just did). Can anybody get the word out, perhaps on talk pages and through a geolocated banner? (I'm wondering if this ought to be rescheduled so we can be sure of getting people aware on-wiki and of a number of regular editors being able to attend.) —innotata 19:02, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen and to everyone who attended. There was a writeup on the event at startribune.com. I was especially appreciative of the effort that went into creating the list of articles that could be created/improved using the library's resources. The topic list is reproduced below. Gobōnobo + c 22:53, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

I've bolded the pages I know we worked on in this list. All the articles on the list can be well researched in the Minneapolis Collection, and I probably will work on some others on the list later. Otherwise, we also split Minneapolis Central Library from Minneapolis Public Library. This article could use a free photo of Central Library building standing from 1961–2000 (currently a fair use image provided by a librarian is used). Does anybody have any? (Amazon Bookstore Cooperative could also use a photo; the store was expected to close Monday, but a photo of the building from the next weeks might be suitable.) —innotata 18:15, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
I found a picture of Amazon, but I'm still working on getting pictures of the older locations or interior shots. Cloveapple (talk) 22:27, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
Good. Here's another bit of coverage of the event, by the TC Daily Planet writer who dropped by —innotata 22:35, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Longville

I was wondering if I need to talk to anyone first before I do some editing on the Longville Minnesota page? It says at the top of the page that it has issues. My family has been going up there for years (as we have a cabin nearby on Town Line Lake) and I think that using my copy of the book that was published a couple of years ago on Longville, I can correct those issues. I would love to help out.

Sincerely-

Park Rapids

Hello, for an English assignment a group I am in chose to try and make the Park Rapids articlehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_Rapids,_Minnesota closer to featured status. There is obviously a lot that needs to be done if the article were to gain featured status. I was looking for some feedback, how can the article be improved? where can reliable information be found? Any and all suggestions are welcome, thank you. Jcbfehr3 (talk) 06:06, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Park Rapids, Minnesota - Quality Scale Rating?

During the past few weeks, I made some edits to the Park Rapids, Minnesota page, and a couple of other people also made edits. I noticed that this page has not been given a quality scale rating yet. Could it possibly be reviewed and assigned one? (If there is some other place I should post this, please let me know.) Thanks. Elizmk7 (talk) 14:14, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Plagarism on the White Bear Lake, Minnesota Page

The second discussing the origin of the name "White Bear Lake" is a straight cut and paste from the White Bear Lake website.

I have included the link in a Copy Paste tag on the section, but don't have time to clean it up myself.ReformedArsenal (talk) 14:54, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for catching that. Most of the cut and paste was a couple of quotes from books discussing the legend. The quotes are now sourced inline and the wording has been changed. As the quotes are a tad lengthy, if someone wanted to rewrite the section, they would be most welcome. Gobōnobō + c 21:48, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day meetup at the Minnesota Historical Society

Hey! I work on MNopedia for the Minnesota Historical Society, and I met some folks at the Hennepin County Library edit-a-thon last weekend. We're interested in hosting another meetup at MHS (like we did in 2010), and a couple people suggested Wikipedia Day, Jan 15. I'll need to talk to a few other people to get things rolling, but for now I'm wondering if there'd be interest in that? And are Wikipedia Day meetups always on the actual day (which would be a Tuesday in 2013), or could they be on the weekend before or after? Mhsrc (talk) 21:16, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mhsrc. Wikipedia Day meetups don't need to be on the day of. Probably more people will be free on the weekend. I saw there was some discussion on the Gendergap list about holding an edit-a-thon as well. Were you thinking two separate events? Gobōnobō + c 03:54, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
Okay, save the date: Saturday, January 12, Wikipedia Day meetup at MHS. (That's the same event mentioned on Gendergap, but it's a meetup, not an edit-a-thon. We'll have an edit-a-thon at some point in the future). We're tentatively planning on a collections tour, SHPO tour, and maybe a tour of the big new exhibit, Then Now Wow. Please vote! AfD: Murder of Anne Barber Dunlap

I am the principal author of the page for one of Minnesota's most famous unsolved murders, the murder of Anne Barber Dunlap in 1995. The page has been nominated for deletion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Murder_of_Anne_Barber_Dunlap

I argue that the article is notable because 1) the case led Pillsbury to stop advertising on violent TV programs; 2) the case is the first in which a family member of a missing/murdered person used the Internet to ferret out witnesses; 3) the case involved a world landmark, Mall of America; 4) the case led police departments to revise their policy on sharing case files after a judge ruled that the police had to share with the suspect anything they'd shared with an insurance company.

This case also comes up in the news media from time to time in Minnesota and people turn to the Internet and Wikipedia for more information. Please vote now to keep the article and to let the discussion go on.Bundlesofsticks (talk) 21:24, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:16, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Minnesota county navigational box template categorization.

The Minnesota county navigational box templates place themselves in their respective county categories. This is the kind of self-reference we try to avoid and it is not helpful for Wikipedia users to see our infrastructure in the article space categories. I have started the cleanup by removing Category:Minnesota county navigational boxes from Category:Minnesota counties. Each of the county templates needs a similar change. For example, tl:Template:Aitkin County, Minnesota appears in Category:Aitkin County, Minnesota. I propose we clean up all of these templates. As an example, I fixed Cottonwood County.[4].

I'm willing to go through and make these changes, but before starting I want confirmation this is the correct way to go. JonHarder talk 22:55, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

An issue over sources: WP:RS and/or WP:OR

The recent article on the Salvation Army Headquarters (Saint Paul, Minnesota) was constructed using the files at the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in the Minnesota History Center. Those of you who attended the recent Meet-up at the MHS probably remember the office. SHPO has files on many historic structures, including but limited to those on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). These files include the Minnesota Historic Properties Inventory Form (filled out by people at the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) in tracking down historic buildings), some of the applications to the NRHP (where applicable), old news clippings (if available), slides of photos taken by employees of MHS, letters from the National Park Service (as the gov't agency in charge of the NRHP), letters from the MHS, etc. For the article on the Salvation Army HQ, there is a dispute over three of the seven cited sources. These are:

  1. A letter from the National Park Service to let parties know their official decision on a matter. The source is used to cite what the NPS did based on what it said it did.
  2. A letter of the Minnesota Historical Society to HealthEast stating an offer to help analyze reuse of a building. The source was used to cite what the MHS offered to do at the time.
  3. Photos, by a member of the MHS, of the demolition of the structure in the article. These photos were dated "Jan 98", and in tandem with a Pioneer Press article available in the file which was dated January 16, 1998 and stated the building was not demolished yet, made it possible to determine without any controversy that the building was demolished "later that month" (i.e. after the 16th).

Concerns have been voiced that these three sources violate WP:OR and possibly WP:RS. They are primary sources, however, under WP:Primary, "A primary source may only be used on Wikipedia to make straightforward, descriptive statements that any educated person, with access to the source but without specialist knowledge, will be able to verify are supported by the source." I feel that these sources, and how they are being used, fall into this exception. Additionally, these sources are reliable in that they are primary sources. The other editor feels that these are not reliable published sources, or that this content belongs on Wikipedia without citations to other sources. We have both agreed that we should get others to share their opinion and help sort out the solution. I thought this would be the best place to start. Please share your opinions. --Bobak (talk) 20:09, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

It's been suggested by an editor from WP:NRHP that we keep the discussion centralized to that talk page, so please refer to Talk:Salvation Army Headquarters (Saint Paul, Minnesota). --Bobak (talk) 07:47, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Articles that need geocoding

If anyone is looking for something to do, there are over 1000 articles in Category:Minnesota articles missing geocoordinate data that could use some geocoding. I ran across one when I found that Sauk River (Minnesota) didn't have any coordinates. Actually, in the case of rivers, {{Geobox/type/river}} is probably more informative, since you can put in the source and the mouth of the river, as well as a bunch of other parameters.

Another cool thing about geocoding is that articles with coordinates show up in Google Maps and Google Earth, so people will get to find Wikipedia articles. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 17:38, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Help with scanning & uploading donated slide collection

A Minnesota college professor wants to donate a large professional quality image collection as part of his retirement. I suggested the [Wikimedia Commons and promised I'd deal with the logistics. The thing is the pictures are all on slides and neither he nor I have any experience converting slides to a digital format. He's still sorting the slides but there's about 2,500 to 3,000 images.

If anybody could give a hand with any stage of this project I'd be grateful. The pictures aren't about Minnesota, but since the physical slides are in Minnesota, I'd hoped somebody here could help. I'd hate to see these pictures lost when he retires. Cloveapple (talk) 20:52, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Twin Cities Wiki

Hello all,

My name is Brian and despite my Wikipedia username, I live in the Twin Cities metro area. I am recruiting a group of co-founders to get a Localwiki started for the Twin Cities. A localwiki is essentially a hyperlocal wiki for a community or group of communities. Some great examples of what we envision are TriangeWiki, DentonWiki, and DavisWiki. The first two are built on the same free software platform we will be using.

We are in the very initial stages and would love to have you help us build the wiki from the start. We will be located at twincitieswiki.org. The software is not up yet, but we have started a blog. Please let me know if you are interested by either posting on here, posting on my talk page, or contacting us via the website.

I believe there are some great cross sharing opportunities between Wikipedia and Twin Cities Wiki (where all content licensing will be very similar to here). In addition to the group forming around Twin Cities Wiki, there is also a group of people discussing localwikis in general, let me know if you are interested in the group.

We very much look forward to any involvement and we are seeking out people to help us plan the wiki, write articles, advertise, fact check, etc. Please let us know your thoughts. Thanks for your time! --NDState 04:49, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

P.S. Sorry if this was not the most appropriate place to post this. I just see this as a great resource that we can build together and I wanted everyone here to be aware of it... so we can build this wiki together.

Appear to have found a NRHP building that no longer exists

Thought I'd share a story, maybe some of you have run into this. I finally got back into some Wikipedia-photo-taking road trips and when covering McLeod County I opted to come back and hit some more remote corners of Carver to complete all the photos for the county's list of places on the National Register of Historic Places. When I visited Hamburg to cover its two spots, I found the "Jacob Hebeisen House" doesn't appear to exist anymore. It had one of those irritatingly vague directions of "Off County Highway 50" so I used the geo coordinates (44°43′46″N 93°58′14″W) and drove around looking for a house built in the 1880s (according to Mary Ann Nord's MNHS book). No dice. I even drove up and down much larger swaths taking photos of anything that could be from that era. I did spot a slightly larger old farm further back from the road, but no house that matched. Irked, I visited the SHPO office in the History Center this week to look at their file and slides to see if I'd missed it (as well as the location as marked in the file). Turns out the house either (1) doesn't exist or (2) has been altered so heavily it looks nothing like what's on the NRHP (which is a criteria for removal). The SHPO folks (who are awesome) let me know that occasionally buildings are noted but not yet publicly reported as gone, but this case it was their first time hearing about this building (understandably, this is how they end up hearing about some of these things). So for all intents and purposes the list of National Register of Historic Places listings in Carver County, Minnesota is now complete, but for the one place that no longer exists but is still listed on the NRHP. --Bobak (talk) 21:40, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Looking at the dates on delisted NRHP properties, it's clear they often don't get removed until several years after being lost. I'm not sure if this is a bureaucratic delay or a symptom of SHPO only getting word incidentally. I've been going through our NRHP lists and have been noting these lost-but-still-listed properties at Talk:National Register of Historic Places listings in Minnesota. -McGhiever (talk) 05:28, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

MNopedia

MNopedia, an online encyclopedia on Minnesota run by MNHS which was discussed at the meetup in 2010, has been up for a few months now. Most of the articles so far appear to be from books like Minnesota 150. It will probably make a good source for some articles already, and some of the content is licensed under the CC-BY-SA license, which can be reused in Wikipedia articles with a certain form of attribution. I suggest editors take a look, and tell the people who run it what you think—that's what they asked for at the meetup and in the announcements of the site. —innotata 00:26, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm glad to see this. Reusing the content over here with attribution is a great idea and will likely increase their web traffic. I might create an attribution template if they have lots of articles. I noticed that the pages that have a cc-by-sa license also have a "© Minnesota Historical Society" right next to it. Should we clarify the license before porting anything over? Gobōnobo + c 21:43, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Works that are under CC licenses (apart from public domain ones) have to be copyright, otherwise their copyright could not be released. (All rights reserved is what's contradictory.) Yes, a attribution template would be a good idea. —innotata 17:33, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
Importing an entire article and using only an attribution template to reflect provenance raises issues when later edits are made. It becomes difficult to see what came from where without a careful examination of the article history. We should instead use specific attribution to the source(s) used for each proposition for which a cite is appropriate. Kablammo (talk) 19:49, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
Agreed. I've started an article for MNopedia and an attribution template is in the works at Template:MNopedia. If there is specific wording or fields that should be included in the template, please mention it or feel free to change it. There are a number of articles that have been ported and it will be good if they can be linked through the hidden category Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from MNopedia which is automatically transcluded with the template. How best to handle a move

I have an article ready to go in my sandbox, User:Norstrem/sandbox, which should replace the stub Gooseberry River, and I can't use the move function because the stub which exists already has that name. Do we have an administrator in the project who can handle the move? Ghost towns or abandoned places

Is there any advice on when to move a town in a county template to a "ghost town" section? Specifically, I'm referring to the Template:Lake_of_the_Woods_County,_Minnesota, where I know that Lude is a ghost town, having been abandoned and uninhabited for over 50 years, and not so much as a passable road leading to it anymore, yet it still remains on many printed maps. My question is regarding the towns of Pitt and Graceton. Pitt consisted of a single store that has been closed and abandoned for 20 years. Graceton consisted of a restaurant (the Gray Stone Saloon) that burned over a decade ago. Neither place has any reported population according to the U.S. Census. When is it appropriate to move a location to "ghost town"? Graceton may not even qualify, as nothing of the original restaurant remains.

Target drone (talk) 17:30, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

I'd say use your best judgment. Ghost town#definition gives a good rundown of the different criteria that can be used. Feel free to add any ghost towns to List of ghost towns in Minnesota and Category:Ghost towns in Minnesota as well. Gobōnobō + c 16:34, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Anyone interested in bringing Jesse Ventura article up to good article status?

Hi, everyone,

I've had the pleasure of meeting several of the WikiProject Minnesota participants at the previous Wikipedia meet-ups. I have recently developed the habit of tracking which Wikipedia articles gain especially many page views, from the weekly list of top 5000 pages and from the 2014 annual list of most viewed pages. On both lists, we can see that Jesse Ventura is a very frequently viewed article, probably the most viewed article in the scope of WikiProject Minnesota. With other editors looking on and providing advice, I think it would be fun to try to expand and refine the article on Jesse Ventura until it can be submitted for good article review. Articles on living persons are always the trickiest to edit, but there are abundant reliable sources on Ventura's life and career. I see that recent edits to the article have come from an editor who works a lot on articles about professional wrestlers. Because of Ventura's varied career, the article about him is of interest to several WikiProjects, and should be able to draw in a lot of interesting perspectives. Anyone interested in joining in? -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 14:04, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Also, I'm new at making proposals, so please forgive me if I do anything silly. :) Hope that you like this idea! JonathanHopeThisIsUnique (talk) 04:56, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Historic St. Anthony

As I've been working on some articles on 19th century Minneapolis, I've been thinking about adding more of a history and overview of the historic town of St. Anthony which merged with Minneapolis in 1872. I just can't figure out where it would make the most sense to put it.

I could create a whole standalone article about it (like Lake, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin)...but given how there's a current day St. Anthony (two, actually) that seems like a bit of a nightmare to disambiguate. There is actually a technical connection between the old St. Anthony and the present day St. Anthony, Minnesota so a section could be added there about the old town...but dropping someone reading about 1860s history in an article mostly about a current day town seems a little off as well. There are some bits and pieces about it scattered into articles like Northeast, Minneapolis and Nicollet Island/East Bank, Minneapolis as well.

Any thoughts? Nsteffel (talk) 18:40, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

Regional splits for Minnesota

Hi there. I've been trying to sort out the oversized Category:Minnesota geography stubs, but most of the upmerged templates don't meet the 60 article limit needed for their own category. In the absence of that, I think the best model to follow would be that of Category:California geography stubs -- regional splits, into which the upmerged templates can filter, so as to limit the size of the parent category. (In fact, there are already two based on the Arrowhead and the Twin Cities metro area.) However, Regions of Minnesota isn't particularly helpful here, and the vast majority of those listed in {{Minnesota}} don't seem very useful for this purpose. Central and Southeast may be workable, but there are no others of that scope & definition. If there's anyone who could stop by the stub sorting proposals page and give some input, that would be most helpful. Thanks! Buttons to Push Buttons (talk | contribs) 20:58, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

County and Regional Parks

I'm thinking about WP:BURNWITHFIREing the article List of county and regional parks in Minnesota. One of the problems is that it doesn't address the fact that many official regional parks are outstate city parks, with no county involvement in the park's maintenance or development. I'd like to have a table list of regional parks only, and have individual articles about the county park systems/overviews of the protected areas in each county. Any thoughts?--Molandfreak (talk, contribs, email) 17:44, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

I populated that list way, way back at the beginning of my Wiki-career, so it was probably me who conflated county and regional parks without knowing there was a difference. I'm happy to see this get revamped. The main considerations in my mind would be:
  • A corrected list of regional parks in Minnesota clearly passes WP:LISTN in that they're "a topic discussed as a group or set", but does it pass WP:CSC? Is there a discrete list? How long is it?
  • Individual articles on county protected areas are going to be tough in terms of finding reliable sources and demonstrating notability. I would advocate building that information as a section in each county's article to start, and splitting out individual articles only in the handful of cases where there's enough material to warrant it. -McGhiever (talk) 02:23, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

US 50,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on. If there's the interest I will start 1000 State Challenges like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of states regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for the US and your specialist/home state like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every state, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any state sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:18, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:48, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Prince

Hello Wikipedia,

Having just read the whole of Prince's article on here, I felt compelled to sign up to Wikipedia and help to improve the article, as I feel Prince himself and, indeed, everybody who wants to learn more about him is deserving of a much higher quality article on Wikipedia for such an incredible musician and human being. I am writing here as I would like to greatly improve Prince's Wikipedia page, and to turn it into a top-notch article, and would welcome any help I can get in doing so. If you are reading this and wish to contribute to this noble goal, please do get in touch with me through my talk page--while I may be new to contributing to Wikipedia, I do strongly believe this is worth pursuing and would welcome the help of anybody who thinks the same way. Thank you. Pussycontrol (talk) 13:22, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

Arrowhead 135

I recently created an article regarding Arrowhead 135, an ultra endurance race up in International Falls Minnesota. My question is whether it is appropriately written, whether it reads appropriately for a Wikipedia article. I have not written many, and am open for input. This race gets a lot of attention during the winter from outside of Minnesota due to it's location and nature, and because many athletes travel to race there. I'm open to suggestion in feedback or improvements on the article. - Jkiffmeyer (talk) 02:12, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

This is a new article dealing with a gang in the metro area. I have concerns about WP:UNDUE, sourcing, and BLP, for the reasons set forth on the talk page, and the history mentioned on the talk page of a past criminal prosecution of putative gang members which resulted in their acquittal.

The creator of the article has been responsive to these concerns, but I don't know if a complete picture is being presented, and if some of the sources used are accurate and reliable. I do not reside in the metro and don't regularly follow metro media, so have little knowledge of the extent of problems with gangs. More eyes on this article would be appreciated. Minnesota Featured article review

Another editor has nominated Minnesota for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:41, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

Minnesota Project members: There has been no action since this notice, and the article likely will be defeatured unless progress is made on bringing the article into compliance with FA standards.
Some history: In the summer of 2006 a group of editors collaborated to rewrite this article. The first half-dozen archives to this page show that process, and the FA nomination appears at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Minnesota. It was promoted that fall and appeared on the main page as TFA on May 11, 2007.
Since then FA standards have become more rigorous and the article cannot be said to meet current standards. Virtually all of the major contributors in 2006 are now inactive except me, and my activity now is sporadic. (The metrics show that I am the largest single contributor and editor, but that is skewed by the fact that I am still here and have had the page watchlisted since 2006.) I am not willing to try to bring the article as a whole up to current standards, nor to lead such an effort. I will participate in an effort to do so if others join. If others wish to do so please state that here; if not the article likely will be demoted relatively soon.

Antiracist input needed for Minneapolis

Hi. Can anyone here speak confidently in the anti-racism vein in Minneapolis? I expect to have a FAR (featured article review) called any day now, and the enormous amount of editing that will require would be a logical time to make such changes. I tried once upon a time to include a section under Cuisine on Appetite for Change (web) but it was removed, twice. Sorry I don't recall ever recognizing a person of color as such at any meetup I've attended since 2006 or so. Thank you. -SusanLesch (talk) 18:08, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

@SusanLesch: Could you please provide a bit more detail? I'm a bit lost.
  • What do you mean "speak confidently" about anti-racism in Minneapolis? Do you mean original research about the topic?
  • What does "anti-racism" have to do with a featured article review?
  • "I tried once upon a time to include a section under Cuisine on Appetite for Change (web) but it was removed, twice." I'm not sure what you're talking about.
  • "Sorry I don't recall ever recognizing a person of color as such at any meetup I've attended since 2006 or so." What meetup? What does a "person of color" have to do with anything? Are you specifically seeking a person of color to work on an anti-racism section? Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 16:16, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Thank you! KUTGW. -SusanLesch (talk) 23:39, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
Added a few more things. Not sure of the vision you have for that section. I think key points would be that the pandemic furthered inequities in Minneapolis and that the historic civic unrest combined with the pandemic put extra strain on small businesses. Feel free to edit, revise, etc. per your desired scope there. Minnemeeples (talk) 17:03, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
Really good, thank you! It's not up to me at all. Maybe we should ask SandyGeorgia? Snowbeck and Olson are great reporters but they say blacks are 7% of Minnesota's population. Minnesota State Lottery

Would someone from this WikiProject mind taking a look at Minnesota State Lottery and assessing it? It's completely unsourced and recently more unsourced content seems to have been added. I'm not sure about the notability of state lotteries, but maybe there's enough coverage in reliable sources to support at least a stub. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:49, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

The topic seems to be notable, but the article as written is of poor quality. The wonky content in the article reads like it was taken from a primary source (a legislative summary?), as opposed to from coverage in reputable secondary coverage (e.g., a news article). I removed content that was written like an advertisement and included rules about how to play. I added some article issue tags. Minnemeeples (talk) 16:46, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
Follow up: I added comments on the article's talk page, too, so continued discussion about it can go there. Other state lottery articles seem to have similar issues. Minnemeeples (talk) 17:18, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for taking a look at this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:19, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Socrates Nelson

I recently stumbled across the article Socrates Nelson. It seems to have been largely (but not entirely) untouched over the last six+ years. Since then, I've substantially expanded the article, adding an infobox, a number of references, more comprehensive information about Nelson's life, etc. It's not a rush, but I was hoping someone from this WikiProject could re-assess the article's grade as it pertains to this WikiProject.

Based on the research I did into the subject, the article is fairly comprehensive, but there are definitely still some gaps that could be filled in (for example, his political history needs fleshing out, and it wouldn't hurt to include more information on his spouse and logging business), and it's still actively being worked on.

My personal assessment is that the article is currently a 'C', and might be improved to a 'B' in the near future. Given the subject is a somewhat obscure politician whose career was 150+ years ago, I believe the breadth and quality of content in its current state would be completely satisfactory and useful to a casual reader, but that a 'B' grade just isn't in order yet. At any rate, I'm also open to suggestions about what could be improved. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 04:46, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Wow! It looks like you've put quite a bit of research behind that. Good job! It still seems that the article might only be assessed in the start-to-C range. (Compare to Knute Nelson for a B-rated article.) In reading the article, there are a lot of facts and details about the person, but little to explain why the person is notable and relevant to Minnesota history, or at least the introduction and other areas don't set that up for the reader. It seems too that Nelson is a figured mentioned in many historical accounts, but there doesn't seem to be many cited that are about Nelson, at least from what I can tell. Have any biographers explained why Socrates Nelson important? Is is possible to quote from those biographers or historians to explain his relevance? Just some friendly suggestions. :) Minnemeeples (talk) 02:30, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

Workers building the Minnesota State Capitol page

I am looking for assistance on getting this page out of draft hell and back on to Wikipedia at its original page.

It was flagged and deleted for copyright violations. However, the copy in question was from an article in MNOpedia and obtained under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license. However, the exact same content (word for word) was also published in MinnPost by the same author Randy Croce. The MNOpedia article was published on June 19, 2019. The MinnPost article was published on June 24, 2019, five days later. However, I could not convince the either the person who flagged it for deletion due to copyright violation nor the person who deleted it a few days later and locked me out of the content he said was plagiarism.

I would be happy to work on anything and take suggestions and help :) to make it better and compliant if folks see problems.

Also: I have been working on improving the Minnesota State Capitol page with new photos and content. I have also created several other related pages in addition to Workers building the Minnesota State Capitol page. Please help to work to improve these pages.

Myotus (talk) 03:04, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

@Myotus: I ran the article through Earwig, and it certainly seems that, while probably unambiguous, some phrases are extremely similar to this source. I plan on going through the article and doing a thorough copyediting. Jordano53
@Jordano53: Most of those violations are copy from using Creative Commons licensed text. I have used Earwig the same and definitely had found some violations especially in the "Workers on the Capitol" section but instead of letting me work on the copy in question in draft form they simply deleted it and refused any access to it. (Ironically, I was able to find the copy again on a site that copies wikipedia articles) I had the same issue with this page Minnesota State Capitol Mall but an entirely different experience with the person who flagged it and was able to work with them on the copy and get it ready for prime-time. I am blown away by both the bullies I encounter on Wikipedia and also the amazing cooperation and helpfulness I find on here too. Myotus (talk) 03:36, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Potential task force for Minnesota Legislature?

I've recently become involved with members of the Minnesota Legislature and I've come to realize quite a bit of work needs to be done. Among other things, the 15th-68th legislative sessions need articles, both the Senate and House of Representatives articles could use expansion, and many, many, many, individual legislators need articles. This scope would be large, so multiple individuals would be needed. Would anyone be interested in this topic? Jordano53 19:25, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

Also posted here. I figure the task force would be split between the two projects. Jordano53 19:30, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
@Jordano53: This does look daunting. Any thoughts on how to organize it? Grap a year? :-) What kind of tools may be of help in working on these pages? I am quite adept at Wikicode having built Placeography but still, anything that helps... Myotus (talk) 03:38, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
@Myotus: Organizing doesn't seem to be too difficult. There's a pretty good guide that details what all should go into it. I'm certain AutoWikiBrowser would be necessary to organize the articles within the scope and from there it would just be creating and expanding. The Legislature Legislative Reference Library is exceptionally detailed and provides a good base for articles. The Digital Library often has public domain images of legislators for download as well. The most daunting aspect would be the quantity, but I feel as though it would be manageable with even 3-4 people. I appreciate your interest and I hope a few others follow suit. From there, I think we'd be able to construct a more organized structure, with a more coherent scope and to-do list. Jordano53 04:34, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
@Jordano53: There is a certain irony in this as I reviewed the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library's grant requests to digitize many of their materials. Question. Does that make me ineligible to work on the articles? If I am eligible please add me to the Task force. I would be happy to help. Myotus (talk) 05:09, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
@Myotus: I am not an expert on COI, but I'm sure you are eligible to work on the articles. You may want to disclose it if you want to be safe, but I'm certain you'd be able to contribute. Jordano53 17:38, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

@Jordano53:, thanks for looping me in on this. I've done a lot of digging on early MN legislatures and have run into a particular problem that Minnesota's legislative history presents. During the era of the non-partisan legislature, the House and Senate were routinely recognized as having liberal and conservative caucuses. Late into the history of these caucuses, they were well-documented, but in their early years (1910s-1930s) they were very fluid and ill-defined.

If a project like this were to be undertaken, we would need a standard for documenting and understanding this era of MN politics. As far as I know, no state has ever had a political structure like MN did (Nebraska has a non-partisan legislature, but its caucuses are well-defined.) Any thoughts on this? It feels like a major sticking point to me, since most wiki articles on legislatures focus on who controlled the body.

I'd love to help out with something like this. I'll also suggest the MNHS Newspaper Hub for researching legislatures prior to 1922. SpeedMcCool (talk) 16:27, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

@SpeedMcCool: I've come across that as well and it is certainly foggy when compared to other state legislatures. If the Political party strength in Minnesota article is correct, we'd be able to at least define the majority and minority caucuses in both bodies of legislature. Majority leaders are also pretty well-defined for the early non-partisan era (not minority leaders, though). For many legislators, the caucus information would be unavailable and for their articles/info on the session page, I think it would have to say that the caucus information is unknown, with an explanation that elections were nonpartisan. Maybe down the line, the information will become available. The non-partisan era is an extremely interesting era for Minnesota politics and state legislatures as a whole. It probably could warrant its own article. At the very least, the small paragraph currently on the Legislature article should be expanded. I'm glad to have you on board! I'll begin creating the task force subpage now and work on adding a parameter for us on the Wikiproject Minnesota banner. Jordano53 18:37, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Subpage is up! Jordano53 20:27, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Any opinions about merging Northwest Angle into Angle Township, Minnesota? Magnolia677 (talk) 17:58, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

I guess the question is why? Both are notable and significante on their own. Myotus (talk) 15:58, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
@Myotus: How is "Northwest Angle" different from "Angle Township, Minnesota"? They are two different names for exactly the same place. Magnolia677 (talk) 16:07, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
@Magnolia677:Angle Township is only one part of the Northwest Angle. The Northwest Angle also covers the Lake of the Woods. Lake of the Woods is part of Lake of the Woods County but not part of Angle Township. So as the two do not cover the same area so it would be inaccurate to merge the Northwest Angle into Angle Township, Minnesota. Myotus (talk) 18:56, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Geocoording question on 7th-8th Street & Nicollet station

What is your coordinates policy on this wikiproject for the stations of that line? Should the coordinates for this article be the station on 7th, the station on 8th or the block in between them? Sadenar40000 (talk) 00:02, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

I think that question would be better placed for WP:STATIONS. Fort Snelling Unorganized Territory

Would a project member be so good as to review the Fort Snelling Unorganized Territory. Over and over editors have used reliable sources to state a falsehood, that the territory is part of Hennepin County. By definition an "Unorganized Territory" is not part of a State or county because the U.S. Congress has not authorized it's organization. Without "organization" means there is no Government organization. By law even people in Unorganized territories must be accounted for in the U.S. Census. For the purpose of the census the Fort Snelling Unorganized territory was assigned to Hennepin County and the county identifies it with the letter Z. Editors use that census assignment to state the Unorganized Territory is part of the county. Until Congress passes legislation organizing the territory it is not part of the State of Minnesota let alone Hennepin County regardless of who owns the land. If Congress did organize the Territory and gave it to the State there would still have to be State legislation assigning it to the county. The Minnesota Legislative library will not be able to produce a record of this as it has never happened. A contributing issue is that when Hennepin was created in 1852 the Unorganized territory was within the county description. It is a recording issue that has never been corrected. I reiterate, the Department of Interior legal description of an Unorganized Territory, it has never been organized by Congress and can not be part of an area that has been organized until Congress acts. I expect that once this is confirmed you have the ability block deletion or inform me I am incorrect. Examples in "Article importance grading scheme" table

I have replaced Norm Coleman with Amy Skubitz as the example in Top-importance Minnesota articles as Colman was not rated as a top-level article but Skubitz was and it also combats the gender bias inherent in the previous selection of all men for examples. Also replaced Floyd B. Olson with Barkhad Abdi for in articles of High-importance example for increased diversity and inclusion. Would have loved to add Prince or Ilhan Omar or Nellie Stone Johnson but it appears most articles on Minnesota African Americans (or any person of color) are not rated above Mid-importance in WikiProject Minnesota. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Thoughts on history being recorded in chronological vs. topical order

I'm in the process of some updates to the Minnesota Historical Society and I've found that there is a lot of information on the early process of constructing the building. Ultimately, this was a 62-year project so there is plenty of information that can fill the gap. Would it make sense to create topical subsections of the article, so the process of building the society would have its own section, or is it better to be written in chronological order with information on the construction of the society split along with the rest of the history at the time?

Let me know your thoughts and if there are any guidelines, essays, or other best practices that I could read. Thanks! Ryan Vesey 19:01, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

It would seem to make more sense to go chronological. The Minnesota Historical Society Building (and the Minnesota History Center) while significant in the organization's history are only part of it's history and mission. If there is a lot of history and information on the building I think it would make sense to write about the Minnesota Historical Society Building on the Minnesota Judicial Center page and only write a small amount about it on the Minnesota Historical Society page.Myotus (talk) Myotus (talk) 16:12, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

Examples of article importance

@Myotus: I noticed your edit and comment at Examples in "Article importance grading scheme" table. Assessment can be subjective and editors are free to reassess articles to better match their importance. I think some of the examples are misplaced and I've edited them to what I feel are better match. It's hard to argue that Amy Skubitz is of top importance to Minnesota based on being relatively unknown and having had little impact directly in Minnesota. Her article has only had 12 page views in the last month. Below are my (imperfect) changes that keep a balance of individuals.

  • Replaced the top-importance from Amy Skubitz to Prince (musician). Prince has had a national impact and is perhaps Minnesota's best known musician. He has had a lasting impact and legacy in Minnesota culture. This may be a stretch compared to "define and determine the subject of the Minnesota WikiProject" but I feel it is a better fit than Kubitz.
  • Replaced Barkhad Abdi with Amy Klobuchar. Besides being from Minnesota, Abdi has had little impact on Minnesota compared to Klobuchar. As the senior Senator from Minnesota and with her presidential run, she has been increasingly in the national spotlight.
  • Replaced Keith Ellison with Ilhan Omar. Nothing against Ellison, but Omar brings a better balance in genders. I think you could argue that with Omar's national prominence that she could be rated higher.

I'm open to comments and changes but I think these examples better fit their importance in Minnesota and bring a balance of biographies. -Eóin (talk) 19:16, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
