Looking back now I see that both of those had been relisted, and were old enough to close. I'll be much more careful in the future. I’ve received all other south asian American fraternity/sorority Wikipedia pages and their references. The same restrictions on reliable sources haven’t been put on their pages. If you compare the three Wikipedia pages I attached in my previous post, they pages are identical in style. I dont understand what type of coverage you want from me. It's pretty unfair how this article isn't being published over the other organizations who had articles published using their own websites as references. Please take a look at these published articles and explain to me why they are published and mine isn't. One of the published pages doesn't even have any references. This is really unfair. Danny what do you suggest I do, because this is the only South Asian Fraternity thats active in the country without a wikipedia page. It's unfair for other South Asian Fraternities to have pages with no references and references using their own websites. Danny this is the wikipedia page of an African American Fraternity with 300 chapters https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iota_Phi_Theta They use iota phi theta websites as references. Almost every fraternity wikipedia page that I've seen uses the fraternity websites as references. Danny I need you to understand that this is different situation compared to other articles. Per WP:TOOSOON, Sometimes, a topic may appear obviously notable to you, but there may not be enough independent coverage of it to confirm that. In such cases, it may simply be too soon to create the article. I agree that this will be notable, and will eventually be included, but in its current form there are not enough references to established notability. Twinkle

Thanks for your interest in contributing to Twinkle. I assume you use GitHub? If so, feel free to dig right in: Twinkle is written in plain and simple JavaScript, though it does use the morebits.js library, which currently has quite poor documentation. You'll find a better-documented version here, for which I have filed a pull request.

There are a lot of open issues on the Git repo which you may want to go through. Or to do something quicker, I would suggest reviewing some pull requests. There a several opened by me which are pending. To test if changes are working as described, you can either copy-paste the whole module into the browser console, and if necessary call the module's initialisation function (such as Twinkle.tag() for the Tag module). Or you could paste in the module to a userspace page and import it.

Some of the long term to-dos are at WP:twinkle/to do. I have implemented the first in the list (See #485). Maybe you want to work on the rest :) Ping me if you have any queries. SD0001 (talk) 19:58, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

There are a number of links to disambiguation pages that should be fixed. To help find which specific links I am referring to, I suggest following WP:DABDISPLAY
The use of citations in the middle of sentences is odd and should ideally be remedied
Building off of DGG's comment, the article does read as fairly promotional. Please review WP:NPOV

Once you have improved the article, I suggest resubmitting it to AfC so that another reviewer, who has not already seen the article and made up their mind about it (eg me) gives it a fair review.

As a WikiCup judge I have removed the two submissions you made for the DYK nominations. They were ineligible to score points in the WikiCup because they were nominated by you, and were not created or expanded by you. Challenge #2

(Category harvesting to auto-build navigation pages)

I'm so excited.

Cat links 2 is a very significant achievement, because there are 3 types of pages that we've been trying to automate the construction of: outlines, portals, and navbox footer templates. (Indexes and glossaries are obvious future targets). Along with automatic insertion (instead of appending), automated category harvesting could enable all of these.

Let's start with the most straight-forward use for this: filling in outlines...

Here's an example of the type of functionality we're looking for:

You have a menu item, in tools in the left sidebar, named Cats. When you are on an outline and you click on Cats, the script goes through the outline, looking for empty sections. For each one it finds, it goes to the like-named category and inserts the members list for that category into that section.

A script that processes the wikitext in similar fashion is RedlinksRemover.js. It uses regex search/replace to delete list items that start with redlinks (search/replace to null), and converts embedded redlinks to regular text (search/replace). Its code could be adapted to search/replace to insert category member lists.

Another program (besides cat links 2) that inserts lists is User:JL-Bot/Project content. It uses tags in the form of hidden comments to delimit the area it places the lists in, so that it can update them again later (by removing and replacing the old lists with new ones). For an example, look at the comments in the wikicode at Portal talk:Freedom of speech#Recognized content.

So, not only could the core functionality of Cat links 2 add lists, it could be used to maintain/update those lists as well.

Annotating is another animal altogether. There are problems with the short description approach as well. We'll need a custom-designed approach that fits outlines.

Being able to harvest categories and put those entries in the right place in an outline (and doing that again and again in rapid fashion) is the current focus. That is, to build bare outlines (and expand existing outlines) the entries of which can be annotated later.

Once we have all the components (building, annotating, etc.), we can integrate those all into a complete outline builder.

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes

You can now use Google Translate in the content translation tool. [1][2]
You can now add captions to files on Commons. Captions are short descriptions of the file. They can be translated to all languages we use. They can't use wikitext markup.
Earlier a quoted HTML attribute had to be followed by a space. Now it doesn't. This means that some pages could look different when you save them even if you didn't edit that part of the text. [3][4]
Templates with <templatestyles> could not show the difference between the live template and the sandbox version when they were tested. This has now been fixed. <templatestyles> has a new wrapper parameter now. You can use it for selectors like .mw-parser-output <wrapper parameter value> <selector from CSS page>. [5]

Problems

When you see an edit in the recent changes feed or in the history of a page some of them have tags. Some tags are added automatically. You can also add tags manually. Tags for edits that have been added manually can be edited. This didn't work for a little while. This has now been fixed. [6]

Changes later this week

You can move files from your wiki to Wikimedia Commons and keep the file history with the new FileExporter. It will be a beta feature on all wikis from 16 January. If you want to test it you activate it and check your wiki's configuration file.
Users who could cause more damage to the wikis if someone took over their account have to have more secure passwords. This includes administrators and other user groups. They can't use passwords that are in a list of common passwords. Accounts with common passwords are easy to take over. The list of common passwords was made longer a few weeks ago and has a different error message. Some user groups have been added to those who can't use common passwords. This is to protect all accounts with user rights that could cause damage. [7]
The AbuseFilter variable minor_edit has been removed. It was deprecated in 2016. Now you can't use it. You can fix the filters using it. You can find them if you use the search bar on Special:AbuseFilter.
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from January 15

Edit request at Kashmir

Hi there, thanks a lot for your contributions. Although you removed this edit request. It is not the suggested way to handle such requests. Edit requests, even if empty should be marked as "Note done, empty". instead of removing entirely. Only obvious vandalism or BLP violation should be removed from the talk pages. IMHO that edit request was against NPOV, and should have been marked as "not done, violates NPOV". Removing them entirely, may confuse the editor who placed it and he may do it again. regards.--DBig Xrayᗙ 20:34, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

@DBigXray: I usually do just decline, but for blank requests I have been removing them after a brief discussion (I couldn't find it, sorry) about having blank requests not serving any purpose. OK, that's your own call, but please note that editors might object to you removing Edit requests on the basis of NPOV especially on "hot pages" such as these on WP:ARBIPA. A talk page is exactly the place to discuss any "NPOV or lack thereof" in the article. Entirely removing POV requests, may lead users to think that wikipedia is enforced by censors.

Regarding removing the blank edit requests, initially I was of the same opinion that blank requests serve no useful purpose other than wasting talk page space, but The EPH script showed a message that blank requests should not be removed. I felt this suggestion made sense, because most of the time, the new users place those empty requests thinking that by posting the "edit request", they may get rights to edit the page, or the protection may be removed after "they make a request to edit", since that is not going to happen most of the time, they should be made aware that they can still place a "change X to Y request" and indirectly edit the article constructively. Removing after a brief discussion is also not helpful, because that short discussion might serve as an example to the next guy who is about to put up a blank request. Anyway this was just my own thought, that I shared with you. You obviously, are not bound to follow or act on these thoughts. cheers. --DBig Xrayᗙ 20:55, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

@DBigXray: Thanks. I get what you're saying about "hot pages," and will be sure to avoid just removing requests like I did here. Harvesting categories tool prototype

DannyS712 has created a user script prototype, User:DannyS712/Cat links, that can pull members from a category, a functionality we've been after since the project's revamp last Spring. Now, it's a matter of applying this technique to scripts that will place the items where needed, such as in a section starter script and/or portal builder script.

DreamyJazz is working on a bot to place links to portals on root articles, category pages, and navigation footer templates.

Portal bugs are getting dealt with soon after they are reported.

Updates on DYK

Hi DannyS712, Thanks a lot for your help in reviewing the DYK. ALthough I have been editing here since a long time, I only had my first DYK experience just last month, so I am not very familiar with the entire process. After the recent few comments on this DYK there seems to be almost no progress there. Is someone supposed to do something ? I would like to help and resolve any problems that could allow this DYK to move forward. I can see that WBG is of the opinion that the article is violating NPOV, but I tend to disagree with this subjective opinion. I was hoping to hear back from you if you had any specific suggestions that can be improved. Meanwhile today I did some improvements to the article in the pellet gun section and expanded both the casualty and criticism sub-section. --DBig Xrayᗙ 21:59, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the prompt reply. As I said above, I am a total newb as far as the DYK policies are concerned (this is my third DYK review with past 2 successful in last one month). So please do, as you feel appropriate or please ping an experienced DYK admin for advice in this case. If you would like to know my personal opinion, I would say that the article passes all the quality criteria for a DYK, without NPOV issues. The fact that you have reviewed it, re-read the article again and still feel that "it is okay" encourages me that the DYK should continue. So I would leave the decision to you. Being a nominator, obviously I would like my DYK to succeed. regards

Redirection script

Is any script possible; that helps us to redirect pages easily? It will just ask for a target XYZ and then (a) blank the entire wiki-text, (b) insert #REDIRECT[[xyz]] and save the page using an appropriate edit-sum. Additionally, a feature to notify the creator of his page being redirected (on the lines of Evad's draftification script) will be welcome.∯WBG^converse 13:03, 21 January 2019 (UTC)

@Winged Blades of Godric: So just to clarify, you want to add a tool that would:

Get a target page
Get a reason
Replace the content of the page the tool is activated on with a redirect to the target page, including the reason
Save the edit as something like "Redirecting to ABC using XYZ"
Create a new section on the creator's talk page with an alert?

But, the edit summary wasn't actually required (this edit made it marked as required, but doesn't stop it from working with a blank summary). Tech News

Some people did not get last week's issue of Tech News. This was because of a problem with MassMessage. If you did not get last week's issue, you can read it on Meta. [8]

Recent changes

The content translation tool can now use version 2 as the default version for users who turned on the beta feature. For example it adds the tracking category Pages with unreviewed translations to translations that might have used machine translations without fixing the problems. This is so others can find them. You can find this category in Special:TrackingCategories on Wikipedias.
https://mediawiki2latex-large.wmflabs.org can now convert collects of up to 800 pages to PDF, EPUB or ODT. Previously this was 200 pages.

Problems

When a template was edited with the visual editor, it would sometimes put all information on one line. This makes it difficult to read for editors who use the wikitext editor. It also makes it more difficult to see what happened in a diff. This problem affected edits made between 8 and 17 January and is now fixed. [9]
MassMessage is used to post a message to many pages. It has not been working reliably. Some messages have not been posted to everyone. [10][11]
Because of a database problem that had to be fixed immediately you could not edit most wikis for a couple of minutes on 17 January (UTC). This has now been fixed. [12]

Changes later this week

You will be able to use template styles in the Module namespace. [13]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 January. It will be on all wikis from 24 January (calendar).

Cross Island line MRT stations

Hi, I see that you have moved the articles regarding the new stations to Draft. They are actually announced just a few hours ago. When writing the articles, I forgot to include a source. Danny, it's good you're checking articles and trying to improve Wikipedia. I'm still not sure what is to be achieved by keeping this article in draft. There is nothing wrong with the article. Regarding one source being "not independent" as a negative thing does not make sense, because ICE is the creator of the index and so the most authoritative, which is a positive thing. Whether an article has a different focus or is "just an announcement" does not exclude them as reliable and relevant news sources. Bloomberg and BusinessWire are some of the most reputable. This new index announced in the past day or so, of course, will not have a plethora of information available. If this index slowly replaces Libor, it will be the reference point for most interest rates globally including hundreds of trillions of dollars, like Libor used to. Wikipedia article guidelines say that if an article is less than 1 kb in length for a few months, it may be merged into another article. This article is longer than that. I thought Wikipedia is all about everyone sharing good quality information with standard and guidelines, but if you have to be some expert before sharing, then we may have missed the point. I don't think you're taking the best path here in limiting the growth of knowledge for everyone, but it's up to you. If it there ends up being no article, I hope you think you've done the right thing. Whether you un-draft it or not, the ball is in your court. Danny, as it stands it is a legitimate article. I does not need changing. It is ready to be published. This article has 3 references. I did a quick look at random articles and found other articles with only 1 or 2 references [Ministry of Research, Science and Technology (New Zealand)] [Tuczępy, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship]. Are you going to request deletion of these also? Did you think about Abelmoschus Esculentus's comment? What is the reason for you being so against this article? Is the attitude you have going to encourage everyone to contribute to Wikipedia, or are you working against the ideals of Wikipedia? Take time to consider what influence you are having. Abelmoschus Esculentus is right that usually such analysis is left for the area of deletion, but as explained at WP:AFCPURPOSE, the purpose of reviewing drafts submitted is to analyze whether they would survive the deletion process. MfD is not for near-miss speedy deletes. Yes, consider Speedy delete issues first. Failing that, consider non-deletion options, per WP:ATD. Do not fill MfD with busywork. CSD are purposefully narrow and objective, but at MfD the onus is on the nominator to justify this last fix it resort of deletion. SmokeyJoe will be one of the first to run interference at MfD because he has a different opinion on (non) managememt of userspace. Good guy but he prefers an near empty MfD list. My User:Legacypac/CSD_log may assure you I know what will be an accepted CSD. I strongly support cleanup in stale userspace. Be liberal with G11 and G12. Be conservative with MfD, because you are basically requesting multiple community members to second guess your management decisions, and this usually amounts to a net-negative contribution. This doesn't answer my question, so I'll rephrase. What potential purpose does the discussion serve, now that the RfA is closed, other than causing disagreements (or allowing them to develop, etc)?

Your disagreement is obvious. Again, where did I say "huge error"...? I reverted you because, again; there are current posts with pings requesting a reply (including one from an admin). Allow those that have been pinged to reply. For instance, I was writing out my reply to another user when you closed it. So, my reply shouldn't stand because you arbitrarily chose to close at that moment? There is also a current question, with ping, from an admin to one of the users, how about allowing them an opportunity to reply? Is that ok with you?

Template:Japan topics

Hi. I'm wondering what I should do about this template, which is semi protected. I lay out a brief history of the issue below, but the question is: if an editor continues to remove the imperial seal from the template, even after I start a talk thread about it, and even after I post on their talk page, what should I do? I don't want to edit war, but I also don't think it should be removed

Hi Danny, I am curious what exactly made you interpret/think of Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion/List of HD DVD devices as an attack page? It did not contain "libel, legal threats, material intended purely to harass or intimidate a person or biographical material about a living person that is entirely negative in tone and unsourced" as far as I can tell? It seemed more like new editor frustration to me. Just curious your thoughts, TheSandDoctor ^Talk 08:41, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

Category harvester / placer

The prototype you've built is awesome. It provides proof of concept.

Appending a single category to the end of a page is of limited use. An editor of an outline would then need to cut and paste the list to its final resting place in the outline. Then the process would need to be repeated for every blank or missing section. A single outline could have several dozen of these. A new outline skeleton could have over a hundred. Fetching categories one-at-a-time using the prototype tool would be extremely time consuming.

But, the tool you built reveals the potential of things to come.

The method could be applied to building large outlines very rapidly.

Step one: The user builds the heading structure for a new outline.

Step two: The user places a tag (in the form of a hidden comment) in each empty section indicating the category intended to populate that section.

Step three: The user runs the FetchCats tool to process the outline. It reads the first tag, fetches the category indicated, and inserts the entire list of articles (article namespace only) from that category into that section of the outline, repeating this process for each tag.

Step four: The user smiles at a job well done. Note, that the tags are not removed, as they can be used later to update the sections.

The tool I'm interested in is the one described in Step three and four above.

Is this enough detail for you to produce the tool?

It would rely on 1) always picking only articles, 2) using a special syntax for the comment, so that I know that it wants the category added, and it wasn't just commented out, and 3) a lot of work from me. Cool.

A good identifier for the tag would be the name of the script. For an example of using comments as tags for a program, see any recognized content section in a portal. For example: Portal:Japan.

The comment tags it uses are:  and . That provides distinct delimiters, which are useful when replacing existing material, so you know where it begins and ends. (Which this script may do in future versions). However, since we'll be having more than one use of the program per page, the delimiters will have to be even more specific so that pairs of them aren't confused.

The script we are discussing looks like it would be a regex operation. Would you agree?

A script I worked on in which I added extensive regex looping is RedlinksRemover.js. I started with an existing script and modified it. Some of the code I still don't understand.

But, I'm in the process of picking it apart and documenting the entire script line-by-line on its talk page (workshop page).

Let me know if you come across anything interesting during your feasibility assessment.

Conversion continues

There are about 1100 portals left in the old style, with subpages and static excerpts. As those are very labor intensive to maintain (because their maintenance is manual), all those except the ones with active maintainers (about 100) are slated for upgrade = approximately 1000. We started with 1500, and so over a quarter of them have been processed so far. That's good, but at this rate, conversion will take another 3 years. So, some automation (AWB?) is in order. We just need to keep at it, and push down on the gas pedal a bit harder.

Speaking of upgrades...

The following portals are listed in the header at the top of Wikipedia's Main Page, and get far more traffic than all other portals:

Of those, all but one have been revamped to an automated self-updating single-page design.

The remaining one, Portal:Mathematics has manual maintainers, and has been partially upgraded.

As these are our flagship fleet, they need to be kept in top-notch condition.

Check 'em out, and improve them if you can.

Deorphanizing the new portals

As you know, thousands of the new portals are orphans, that is, having no links to them from article space. For all practical purposes, that means they are not part of the encyclopedia yet, and readers will be unlikely to find them.

What is needed are links to these portals from the See also sections of the corresponding root articles.

Dreamy Jazz to the rescue...

Dreamy Jazz has created a bot to place the corresponding category link to the end of each portal (if it is missing), and place a link to each portal in the See also section of the corresponding root articles.

That bot, named User:Dreamy Jazz Bot, is currently in its trial period performing the above described edits!

To take a look at the edits it has made so far, see Special:Contributions/Dreamy_Jazz_Bot.

It shouldn't be long before the bot is processing the entire set of new portals.

Good news indeed.

Recent changes

The Wikimedia servers use HHVM to run the PHP code. They are going to use PHP7 and stop using HHVM. You can test PHP7 with a new beta feature. That way you can help find and report problems.

Problems

When someone moves a page to a name that already exists that page that had the name the article is moved to is deleted. For a couple of months this didn't always work. Some users saw an error message instead. This has now been fixed. [15]

There is no new MediaWiki version this week.

The reply-link newsletter, issue 1

Hi! Welcome to the new reply-link newsletter, which I made because the ol' list on the reply-link talk page was unwieldy. In case you haven't been following development recently, I've sent out some new updates that should let it reply basically anywhere, even in transcluded pages or under hatted discussions (two locations people have been wanting for a while). Reliability has also gone way up, as I've implemented a couple of sanity checks that help prevent the script from responding to the wrong message. Unfortunately, that means the script fails a bit more often. Anyway, try it out if you haven't done so in a while, and let me know what you think! @Eadfasfafadf: If the actual allegations were false, then you can add that to the article along with sources. If the allegations were never actually made, and thus the claims in the article were false, you would be completely correct to undo my edit and remove the content. However, the allegations are supported by sources, and the article shouldn't exclude them just because they are negative. See this page for more. Thanks for the heads up on the typo. It's fixed, via WP:AWB.

Speaking of AWB, that's what I typically use to post the newsletter (using its "Append" feature), unless I'm feeling in a particularly manual (tabbing) mood. AWB is pretty fast, and is a "mass message" technique.

Having someone proofread the newsletter before it goes out is definitely a good idea, and I may take you up on that, when I'm not in a rush.

I noticed you are an AWB user. Nice. We have AWB tasks from time to time. How advanced are you with it? I'm looking for editors comfortable with a multi-regex approach of making a pass on a complex (undefined) search/replace problem (where you are left up to specifying the regexes yourself), where you add regexes as you find exceptions, until the set of regexes catch pretty much all conditions. Another technique is list swapping, but I've yet to confirm that anybody else uses the approach. It's where you take a list created in AWB, modify it in a sandbox (like replacing the prefix, and then stripping out the redlinks before restoring the original prefix. Good for making lists of pages with specific support.)

I like your attitude. Then, let's get started!

There's this bot, JL-Bot, that inserts lists of recognized content wherever its dedicated "Project content" (subpage) template call is placed. An AWB task, involving list swapping, if you choose to accept it, is to insert a Project content call in every portal that has a corresponding WikiProject banner template for tracking pages falling within the scope of the corresponding WikiProject. The WikiProject banner templates all have the naming structure "Template:WikiProject x", where x is the subject. All portals have the naming structure "Portal:x". Therefore, we can list swap based on x...

Make a list of all portals in a sandbox. In AWB, you could use Make list on Category:All portals, then copy/paste the list, and then linkify the entries. Or you could use your cat links script.

To grab the max, I've adapted your script to FetchCat.js with a menu item on the left sidebar in the Tools menu.

Then, using wikEd, or your favorite text editor, change "Portal" to "Template:WikiProject".

It's the blue links we're interested in. So get rid of the red links. You could use AWB's Make list (Links on page (blue links only)) feature (to make a list of all the blue links and then copy/paste them back into the sandbox), or use RedlinksRemover.js.

Then, change "Template:WikiProject" back to "Portal".

Now you have a list of portals that could display a Recognized Content section that you can load into AWB.

Use AWB to insert a new section, with the following code in it, into each portal right before its Associated Wikimedia section:

|content-featured-lists
|content-good-articles

Set AWB to skip pages that already have "User:JL-Bot/Project content" on them. AWB's preparse mode is good for processing these skips, to strip them out of the list before you get down to the nitty gritty. You can eat dinner while the preparse is running.

Not all portals use the same section formatting, and so you will need to add more regexes as you go along. So, you have skipping turned off for no changes, so that an empty diff displays. When you come to a page where no changes are made (blank), stop AWB, add a regex, then click start again). Or you could divide and conquer, going after all the like-formatted portals in separate batch runs.

It also uses a graphical interface, which is a lot easier. Also, could you add a few difs, so I can better understand this? Oops, I forgot Fetch only gets 500. AWB is limited to 5,000, 10,000 for bots. I'll get you some diffs soon. I'm not as familiar with JWB.js, which is what I have instead of AWB on this machine (AWB only works on Windows machines, which I don't have with me at the moment). I also forgot I've been experimenting with conditional sections, that only show up when a condition is met, meaning we may be able to include the code on all portals, rather than just matching ones. That way, if a new WikiProject is created, the corresponding portal will start showing its recognized content automatically. I'll get back to you with the code and diffs. In the meantime, you can familiarize yourself with the standard single-page portal model, which is included in {{bpsp}}, and the old-style portal, generated using {{box portal skeleton}}. The latter has been deprecated for building new portals with, but is in over 1000 existing portals, with some modifications. (They are in the process of being transformed). My only issue is I have found the photo online on other platforms (it is even the fifth top photo when you google her name) and I cannot prove she owns this photo. This is creating a problem because she is getting very upset on Twitter and I cannot prove she owns this photo nor do know if she understands our copyright laws. I certainly didn't before I joined Wikipedia. Her fans are uploading many copies of this photo under many different titles too. Honestly, you had every right to believe this user. You were doing the right thing. She is verified on Twitter where she confirmed that she owns this photo. I am just suspicious because I've been following this situation longer so I knew that this photo was on google/other websites and had my suspicions. I really can't critique you for assuming good faith/reasonability. I guess maybe if you had looked in the page history before answering the edit request on her protected page you would have seen there was a debate about the copyright of this photo (eg. [17]) and that might have made you pause a bit if you did, but really you did the right thing. Notification bot (cf Wikipedia:Bot_requests#Discussion_on_the_spec)

Answering here as I believe it is more convenient. As you probably guessed, I dropped the thing entirely after being told it was on the community wishlist, but I can certainly show you around the bot areas (I am myself quite a newbie but I know the basics). Judging by Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/DannyS712_bot_3 you already have the bot account and the script that runs on it, the only problem is moving to Toolforge to go full auto. The steps to do so are:

Create a Toolforge account (link - you should point to the BRFA in the registration form). You will need both to create an account for yourself and a "tool" account from which the bot runs.
Access Toolforge. You need some basic knowledge of Bash and SSH to do that. mw:Help:Toolforge is your friend.
Place the source files inside the tool account directory at Toolforge. (I strongly encourage you to use some version control e.g. Git even if none else will ever touch the source.) Be careful that by default those files are readable by anyone - so if you use mw:OAuth config files or the like, you should change the permissions so that only the tool maintainers can read those. (You will probably need OAuth to run the bot on WP, but I guess you already have credentials for when you run it manually?)
Run the script at regular intervals via a Cron job. Cron is pretty much all the documentation you need (mine is a simple one-liner). You should not run anything resource-expensive directly from the Toolforge shell but instead submit it to the grid, but Cron's will be automatically edited to ensure that.

Another advantage of running on Toolforge is that you can save files within the tool account that cannot be edited by Wikipedia users (the only way to do that in-wp would be to protect the page and grant advanced permissions to the bot, but no bot ever gets granted permissions the maintainer does not have for obvious reasons).

A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

Miscellaneous

Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.

Dreamy Jazz Bot is up and running!

Dreamy Jazz Bot has been approved and is now up and running.

What it does is places missing links to orphaned portals. It places a link in the See also section of the corresponding root article, and it puts one at the top of the corresponding category page.

We have thousands of new portals that have yet to be added to the encyclopedia proper, just waiting to go live.

When they do go live, over the coming days or weeks, due to Dreamy Jazz Bot, it will be like an explosion of new portals on the scene. We should expect an increase in awareness and interest in the portals project. Perhaps even new participants.

Another sockpuppet infiltrator has been discovered

User:Emoteplump, a recent contributor to the portals project, was discovered to be a sockpuppet account of an indefinitely blocked user.

When that happens, admins endeavor to eradicate everything the editor contributed. This aftermath has left a wake of destruction throughout the portals department, again.

Thanks for closing the authority control template RfC

I greatly appreciate your responding to the administrator's noticeboard for closure for Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)/Archive_148#RfC:_authority_control. I think you did a great statement of consensus and also I appreciate your closing out the request queued at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Requests for closure.

Excuse me for asking for an additional favor after you have just granted a favor, but if I may request, in the future when you close a large discussion please also seek to report the close at the most concerned channel. I just tried to do that at Template_talk:Authority_control#Close_of_RfC, which is the talk page for the template in discussion.

If you miss cross reporting then I think everything is fine, but I was checking to see the response back at the template talk and was unsure whether people there even recognized the close. Thanks for doing the admin work in any case. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:07, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

You were a neutral closer and I think you did great. No one can predict the future, but your close might be a directional marker guiding the entire future of digital media and human culture. Wikimedia projects get 500 million unique visitors a year and I can only guess 50 million of them at least see the templates. The content of many more gets influenced by how these templates direct people.

The template was established in an OCLC project in 2012. It is on a million ENWP articles and sets the policy for similar templates in all other language Wikipedias. It now is going through exchange with Wikidata, so keep up your experiments there to maintain ambient awareness.

The exciting secret about this is that Wikimedia projects are building the only interconnecting hub between all databases. OCLC has some of this and some good things that Wikipedia does not, and so do Google etc, but Wiki is the prototype and experimental bed for what everyone does.

If you are amenable to being pitched you could submit 3-5 sentences to The Signpost at the newsroom in news and notes - Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/Newsroom. I wish we had journalism labor organized to interview people, summarize conversation, and track things like this because the impact is massive in its effect on research, publishing, and how people access information. I really appreciate your close, which seemed thoughtful, understanding, and fair. It literally would have taken a room of PhDs, engineers, and executives months to do what you did if we were talking about a competing website. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:31, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

@Bluerasberry: For the signpost, I might be open to it, once the "news and notes" section is started. I'm flattered by the impact you think I may have; I was thinking along similar (though less grandiose) lines when I decided to close each of the sub-questions, to ensure that the discussion serves as a starting point for future RfCs. As for the "room of PhDs...", well that's the beauty of wikipedia: executives don't have extra authority over the PhDs and engineers, and it's the ideas that matter, not the people. --DannyS712 (talk) 19:39, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Votes by topic-banned editors

Hello, I was wondering whether votes by topic-banned editors should be struck in RfCs?[19] The editor Rajulbat was topic-banned in part due to disputes relating to the content of the RfC on the Mitch McConnell page. If this editor's vote had been struck, there would have been 4 votes against the "obstruction" language and 3 votes in favor of it - would that have mattered in terms of deciding that there is a "consensus" against the "obstruction" language or not? I note also that the topic-banned editor is the only one who bothered to write more than two sentences to argue against the content. Snooganssnoogans (talk) 22:29, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

@Snooganssnoogans: The vote wasn't struck before I closed it (and hasn't been), so I didn't take that into account. I'll note that the topic ban was only enacted 6 days after the user's !vote, so I'm inclined to take it into account. Also, you say 3 in favor - I only see 2 (you and Aquillion). Other than Trillfendi's suggestion of just the obstruction part, they are opposed to the rest; that's why I pointed out that adding just obstruction might have more support in the future. --DannyS712 (talk) 22:32, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
