Signpost article

The WikiProject Japan Signpost article scheduled for this week was postponed in light of the earthquake, tsunami, and ongoing nuclear crisis. We would like to publish the interview within the next couple weeks with updated information that takes into account the events in Japan. Please take an opportunity to return to the interview page to answer some additional questions located at the bottom of the page. This is also an opportunity to revise any previous answers if you feel the need. We hope to bring your story to a wider audience. Thanks again for your participation. -Mabeenot (talk) 03:35, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Minor issue at Kekkaishi

I've discovered that the English dub of the anime has been persistently misspelling the name of the opening theme (and two of the ending theme) singer. user:Dragonmaster88 seems to believe that Viz is infallible, when I have provided plenty of evidence to state otherwise. I'm not providing a direct link to the section because he thinks I am wrong because I must be using fansubs for my information. Her ja.wiki page is at ja:宇浦冴香.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 23:31, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

I agree, it's fairly minor. I think a lot of the issues you experienced could have been avoided if you hadn't been as abrasive when correcting the name and i your comments on his talk page. Even if he's being rude, that's no excuse to do the same. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 23:44, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
I was not abrasive until after he undid everything for the second time despite my calm and clear initial message on the individual's talk page. I also put in a hidden note, but he just removed it and dismissed it as Viz is right and everything else must be wrong.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 23:47, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
Now what.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 02:29, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
Okay, it appears he went and asked someone else what to do about me rather than talk directly to me.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 02:35, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
I don't see where you ever discussed it on the talk page of the article. I agree he is being a little dense in this situation, and doesn't seem to be listening to reason. Still, it's best to just not be abrasive at all if you can avoid it (and I think it could have been avoided in this case). I recommend posting over at WT:ANIME to bring more eyes in on the situation (more than just mine). ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 02:48, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Shiba inu stuff

Hi I reverted my edit, as it was not appropriate for Wiki. On that line, could you take a look at OdaMari's comments, continual reversions of edits and contributions and misrepresentation of herself as an official of Wiki. I was unaware there was an area where I could request review. Thanks Tucker454 (talk) 04:08, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

I haven't seen anything where she has said she is an official of Wikipedia. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:12, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
She commented on my talk page (and many others) in a manner that anyone would have considered her to represent herself as an official (if not THE official) of Wiki. Had you looked you would have seen. But I see that you also don't address her constant, continual revisions of articles in what I have found is a rather combative and nonconstructive (destructive) fashion whatsoever. ? This is not hidden behind edits at all. Please take a look. Tucker454 (talk) 07:56, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
I think you're reading too much into her comments. I've read many, many of her comments, and while she does sometimes have a bit of a combative feel to her comments, experience shows that she is only trying to improve the encyclopedia. Rather than complaining to me it may be more effective to try to come to some sort of compromise. Pushing a photo you took and insisting that it be included in the article when it's been pointed out by multiple people that's it's a poor photograph isn't going to win you anything here. Perhaps if you took a better photo, people might be more willing to accommodate you, but the photo as it is won't really work very well. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 19:00, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm butting in a bit here, but I think the photo issue has been resolved (pending Oda Mari's and Tucker454's final comments and improvements, if they have any). — anndelion  00:27, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Odd issue

I just finished translating these titles. However, I'm not sure what to do with the one title (entry 26) which is directly related to a Japanese-only (I believe 2ch only) meme that has been dutifully covered here. I used the English translation of what was actually said, but I don't think that's accurate enough to the meaning of the episode title.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 00:58, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

WikiProjects, MfD and WP:COUNCIL

Hi Nihonjoe.

RE: you comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject Altaic Peoples.

I share you concern. While I personally have no issue with WikiProjects sitting around tagged {{inactive}}, in recent times WP:MfD has become the oversight body for dealing with inactive WikiProjects. Some are intent on having stillborn, or ill-conceived WikiProjects deleted. I am seeking to be able to provide advice to editors who return to find their WikiProject deleted. Explicitly pointing them to Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals seems like a good idea, if they want to try again.

If you have some advice on what's best to do in response to these WikiProject MfDs, I would like to hear it.

Regarding your specific point about WP:COUNCIL trying to take over the whole process, would you review my edit here? --SmokeyJoe (talk) 04:27, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

I think any WikiProject which is inactive should simply be tagged as such (especially with the sloppy way JJ98 and others are doing it, where they leave countless sub- and related pages dangling with no connection anymore). By leaving them tagged as inactive, it allows others to stumble up on them and perhaps reactivate them rather than having the create them all over again should interest increase in that particular area. As many, many editors have stated here, "space is cheap". I think what really needs clarifying is

"It is usually preferable to either mark the Project as {{inactive}}, or redirect it to a relevant Project, or change it to a task force (of a parent Project), unless the Project is void or entirely undesirable."

at WP:MFD to something more like

"Inactive projects not be deleted, but instead should be marked as {{inactive}}, redirected to a relevant Project, or changed to a task force of a parent Project unless the Project was incompletely created or entirely undesirable."

As for your WP:COUNCIL edit, I think it;s good to note that it is not mandatory, but that it may be useful in attracting people to the fledgling project. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:11, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Mujaki

Mujaki unilaterally changed Hepburn romanization, again, this time introducing rules that are in no way indicative of any practice (long a and long e that arises from ee are ā and ē) and a bunch of other things in this edit. I tried to incorporate the changes until I discovered the ā and ē in words of Chinese & Japanese origin for the revised system, and now I've reverted back to the last version of the article prior to Mujaki's edits (while attempting to incorporate the one useful aspect).—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 19:22, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

But considering his stage name is from before the Meiji restoration, should it still be written in the Surname Given Name order?
Also, your assistance in reigning in Mujaki is paramount.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 18:38, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Is there a Japanese page? As for Mujaki, start an RfC or mediation or something. It's obvious you two can't work together, so get others involved. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:44, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
Excuse my butting in, but Bando's name should be written in the Surname Given Name order. See Ichikawa Danjūrō XII. Oda Mari (talk) 06:24, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
Exactly. That's what Wikipedia:MOS-JA#Pseudonyms says. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:05, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
Nihonjoe, it's not that we can't work together. It's that Mujaki is making massive changes to Hepburn romanization and when questioned about it, he makes massive essays to explain his point. Not only does he not believe that the modified system (double all long vowels) exists (he tagged every single item describing the Modified Hepburn system with {{citation needed}} or some related template), but he has changed the revised description such that long a and long e arising from ee in native words get macrons because that's in whatever version of the Kenkyusha he read. I think this needs more than just Jpatokal saying "You're utterly wrong Ryulong".—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 18:35, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
I recommend gathering information which supports what you want to keep. Are there other reputable dictionary publishers which agree with Kenkyusha, or do they disagree? Don't answr that here; take it to the Hepburn romanization talk page. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:05, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

That's because you recreated the username, as shown here. Just abandon the account; that account does not have a userpage or a user talk page, so you should be fine. Vandalism on Fujiko Fujio page

I ask for your help with warnings being issued with regards to the Fujiko Fujio page. Since 2009 it has been repeatedly vandalized with entries to Cantopop and URL substitutions. There is very little meaningful editing in the 2009-2011 timeframe. I noticed you had a hand in editing it prior and that is the basis for my request to you. I have submitted a rewrite based on the JP Wikipedia page, which I am not concerned with defending more than I am interested in seeing warnings and bans issued for malicious vandalism. Senkaku Islands dispute

Please consider what I have written at User talk:Ged UK#Senkaku Islands dispute.

It is probable that your decision to lock Senkaku Islands here and Senkaku Islands dispute here mirrors the reasoning which informed the judgment of Ged UK when he locked one of these articles here.

Your succinct analysis bears repeating: "It's a POV-magnet, and edit wars happen frequently."

Despite the ways in which you and Ged UK are each correct, is is possible that you both misconstrue the problem at hand?

IMO, this is a temporary bandaid. It is a mismatch which rewards an edit warring strategy rather than suppressing it. Compare Lvhis's explanation: I don't mind if that page got locked, but do mind it was locked without that tag.

Can you envision an alternative approach which we have not yet perceived? --Tenmei (talk) 19:35, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Kounotori or White Stork.

The H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV), nicknamed Kounotori (こうのとり?, Oriental Stork or White Stork), is an unmanned resupply spacecraft used to resupply the Kibō Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) and the rest of the International Space Station (ISS).

Ohio Nihonjoe ! Thanks for your help with ISS. I would like to ask your opinion on the white stork spacecraft, which I sometimes refer to on the ISS page. I'm a native English speaker, and the name Kounotori doesn't mean anything to me, except the name of the HTV. I understand that in Japanese, it conveys to the reader special meanings, like the bringer of good things (babies?). I wonder if I am correct therefor, to use the term white stork spacecraft, as the most appropriate translation, or the most appropriate way to refer to the spacecraft, apart from HTV. In english white stork has a very subtle meaning, as it also brings babies according to literature. Penyulap talk 02:43, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
