Research into the user pages of Wikipedians: Invitation to participate

Greetings,

My name is John-Paul and I am a student with the University of Alberta specializing in Communications and Technology.

I would like to include your Wikipedia user page in a study I am doing about how people present themselves online. I am interested in whether people see themselves in different ways, online and offline. One of the things I am looking at is how contributors to Wikipedia present themselves to each other through their user pages. Would you consider letting me include your user page in my study?

With your consent, I will read and analyze your user page, and ask you five short questions about it that will take about ten to fifteen minutes to answer. I am looking at about twenty user pages belonging to twenty different people. I will be looking at all user pages together, looking for common threads in the way people introduce themselves to other Wikipedians.

I hope that my research will help answer questions about how people collaborate, work together, and share knowledge. If you are open to participating in this study, please reply to this message, on your User Talk page or on mine. I will provide you with a complete description of my research, which you can use to decide if you want to participate.

Thank-you,

John-Paul Mcvea

Great, thanks. I'll post a short questionnaire below. Please answer the questions to be included in my study. Thanks again -- I appreciate it. Johnpaulmcvea (talk) 20:37, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank-you for agreeing to participate in my study

Thank-you for agreeing to participate in my study, entitled “Online Self-presentation among Wikipedians.” I appreciate it.

As I indicated in my last message, here are five short questions about your user page that I would like you to answer. These will help me to understand your motivations for creating a user page such as yours. Please be as brief or as thorough as you like.

5 QUESTIONS

1. Are you a member of social networks such Facebook or MySpace?

2. In addition to maintaining a user page in Wikipedia, have you also written or edited articles? If so, about how many times?

3. What are the key messages about yourself that you hope to convey with your user page?

4. Have your Wikipedia contributions ever received feedback, such as being edited by others or commented on? Have you received a message from another Wikipedia user? If so, do you think your user page positively or negatively affected what other people said and how they said it?

5. Do you see your “online self” as being different from your “offline self?” Can you elaborate?

Please indicate your answers to these questions on your talk page, or on mine. Please respond by October 1st so that I have time to properly read your responses. If you like, you can email your answers to me instead (jmcvea@ualberta.ca).

Thank you again : )

Capitalization of mammals

Re: [1]. In my understanding WP:MAMMAL does not have clear conventions on that, and the recent tendency is to decapitalize. You are the first proponent of capitalization (outside WP:BIRD) I've met over the past months :-). Thoughts? Materialscientist (talk) 07:09, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

If it's not clearly spelled out there, then it should be as it is standard practice. Every time I used to move articles to a lowercase second word, it got reversed citing standard practice. Like I said, ask at WP:MAMMALS. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:06, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
I see. Don't know what "standard practice" means - in general, wikipedia does not follow common literature on capitalization rules, but sets its own standards instead. Just to tell you what I know. Mammals is a big project with no core, and the initiative is taken at its subprojects (e.g. primates set lowcase). The capitalization tendency is in the past, it was reversed in the last year; and when guidelines are absent, WP:MOS provides one (use lowcase in most cases). Cheers. delay in shift of contributions

Hiya, you completed my rename request over a month ago, from User:Maedin to User:Julia W (diff). I have about 2,500 edits that are still listed as Maedin: Special:Contributions/Maedin. It doesn't seem like I have enough edits (only about 10,000) for it to be taking this long for them to transfer. Does something need kicking? Thanks! Julia\talk 08:20, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

You recreated your account again after I renamed it and before all the edits were reassigned. The log shows the following:

13:56, 20 August 2011 Maedin (talk | contribs | block) account created automatically ‎

Unfortunately, there is not anything which can be done to merge the edits on the two accounts now. I recommend simply noting your previous username on your new user page if you wish people to know about those edits. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:31, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
Okay, that is really frustrating and undesirable. The account was only created automatically because of the SUL; I must have visited enwiki after logging in at Commons or so. Can nothing be done at dev or steward level, please? Julia\talk 09:11, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes, developers can fix this for you. Post to bugzilla:17313 and re-open it. –xenotalk 15:58, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes, what xeno said. Keep in mind it may still take a bit for it to get done, depending on what else the developers are doing right now. Sorry for any frustration in the process. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:14, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Mentoring Tenmei

I want to thank you again for your mentoring.

I appreciated your efforts; and my participation the project was affected by your investments of time and thought. --Tenmei (talk) 15:44, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

You're welcome. Sorry I couldn't help more than I did. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:14, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
Roger Davies commented about here about "recognizing the very considerable efforts that went into mentorship" ....
In my opinion, each of us did everything we were asked to do. Those who volunteered to be mentors deserve repeated thanks and acknowlegement, nothing less. --Tenmei (talk) 03:17, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
I appreciate your comments. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 03:19, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
One last note: Roger Davies now assesses mentorship in terms of whatever he means by the phrase "subsequent failure".
Shall I allow this phrase to pass unchallenged. No mentors failed, nor was mentorship a failure.
Whatever Roger Davies meant is only another example of moving the goalposts. Yes, ArbCom failed us all again.... And yes, if someone will explain it to me, I can try to understand how and why I failed again -- but not you. Please believe that you did all that anyone could have hoped for or expected. --Tenmei (talk) 03:50, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Do not add categories to this, or any other, article without an explanation, and without a clear, reliable reference in the article that indicates the category is correct. Thank you. ---RepublicanJacobiteTheFortyFive 20:37, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Please don't be a jerk. His art has been described as surrealistic in multiple articles (especially in Japan, since he's not as well known in the English-speaking world). You're only showing your ignorance by edit warring over this. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 20:41, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
You call me ignorant and, at the same time, ask me not to be a jerk? And you're a f*cking administrator?! What a joke.
I do not care one jot about the meaningless term "surrealistic," which has no encyclopedic value whatsoever. Surrealism is a 20th century art movement, with which this man has no connection. ---RepublicanJacobiteTheFortyFive 21:32, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
I didn't call you a jerk; rather, I asked you to not be a jerk. Your initial post was very condescending and rude (at least from my point of view). If this wasn't your intent, I apologize for seeing that in your comments. However, surely you can see how your comments could be taken that way given their brusque tone and commanding manner. Being an admin has nothing to do with this as I wasn't acting in my role as an administrator. As for surrealism being a 20th century movement, it's absolutely true that is when it began. Surely you don't mean to indicate that no one else can ever be a surrealist artist again simply because they aren't currently in the 20th century? Keep in mind that Inoue was born in 1948, and therefore has spent most of his life in the 20th century. While he has been described as a "surrealist painter", it's also blatantly obvious to anyone knowledgeable who views his works that he also has many elements of impressionism in his works (especially influenced by Monet, as well as some minor influences from Sisley and Bazille), and he has also been described as a "surrealist-impressionist painter". Are you also wanting to claim that no one can every be an impressionist again, either, since that particular movement began in the 19th century?
As for you not caring "one jot" about someone's works being described as "surrealistic", it doesn't matter what you think unless you are a well-known and published reviewer of or authority on art. Terms such as "surrealistic" absolutely have encyclopedic value, even if you don't think they do. They convey to the reader that whatever is being described as such has qualities associated with surrealism, which is very helpful in conveying a sense of someone's works when they generally can't be used in the article due to not being free. That he has no connection with surrealism is only your opinion. There are plenty of reviewers of his works which strongly disagree with you. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 21:53, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Nomination of Makai for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Makai is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Makai (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 10:42, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

A little help

Andy Mabbett believes that romanization of Japanese should be formatted on Wikipedia with the {{lang}} template, as I used in this message. Seeing as this causes glaring rendering issues in Firefox and just seems to be logically wrong (the romanization is not in itself the language so why should we encode and render it as such), I have told him that it is not correct and he has accused me of breaking an article he uses it on (Mono no aware (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)). Would you mind chiming in and saying that the romanization is not something that should be wrapped by lang="ja" encoding? Or am I completely wrong about this?—Ryulong (竜龙) 23:00, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Feedback Dashboard task force

Hi Nihonjoe,

Since you were a part of the WikiGuides project, I thought I'd give you a heads-up about a new way you can help/mentor newbies on en.wiki: we've recently released a feature called the Feedback Dashboard, a queue that updates in real time with feedback and editing questions from new registered contributors who have attempted to make at least one edit. Steven Walling and I are putting together a task force for experienced Wikipedians who might be interested in monitoring the queue and responding to the feedback: details are here at Wikipedia:Feedback Dashboard. Please sign up if you're interested in helping out! Thanks, Maryana (WMF) (talk) 21:37, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments. I really admire what has been done at the Portal. I note that you have contributed significantly to the Portal (some really great work which i could not possibly begin to understand at my editing level), as well as the 2 templates. I left a note at the portal that may be of importance. I have completed my changes to the SF template, and will update it shortly. I hope its satisfactory. I also hope I can refrain from "owning" it. Well, only one way to find out... :)Mercurywoodrose (talk) 08:48, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Don't say "keep, it just needs work" unless a.) you plan to do the work yourself or b.) you plan to contact someone whom you know will do the work. I see this all the time. People spam an XFD with "keep but improve", but everyone expects everyone else to do the work, so nothing gets done and 16 years later, the portal's still incomplete. Lyudmila Pavlichenko

Hi.

In that article, several users/IP's have tried to remove one sentence and reference - e.g. [8] (and many others; see history)

Timothy Perper (talk · contribs) has repeatedly undone the change as 'vandalism'.

I have investigated the claim as best I can, and it seems to me that it is an inadequate reference to say she achieved popular recognition in Japan as a heroine. I believe the sentence should be removed. I do not believe that the edits removing it should be called 'vandalism'.

Please could you help resolve that issue; see also Talk:Lyudmila_Pavlichenko#Japanese_Material_on_Pavlichenko.
