Issue at Misia

Kauffner is being adamant (again) that the katakana form of her stage name is misleading in that it is implying that her name is primarily written with katakana. I've left him a strongly worded message stating that consensus is against him, and has been against him since November, but he seems to be ignoring this.—Ryulong (竜龙) 02:20, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Instead of focusing on Talk:Misia, Kauffner has brought his faulty arguments to Talk:Yui (singer) because 3 days ago DAJF edited the article to remove "ユイ" from the lead in an edit that changed all of the instances of "YUI" to "Yui" within the article.—Ryulong (竜龙) 08:04, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

It appears that the discussion is not getting any input other than from its opponents. And frankly I am digging myself a hole.—Ryulong (竜龙) 08:34, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

I have returned the film article to its original location, Touch (film). This is the only film by this title with an article, so no further disambiguation is required at this time. In any case, moving the film to a new title without changing the redirect is, as practical matter, the same as not moving at all. Regards,--ShelfSkewed Talk 04:12, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm going to be moving it back as there are other films with articles, but I was busy fixing all the links to the article so they would point to the new location (Touch (1997 film). Please don't jump the gun again, and perhaps give me a chance to do that. I figured it was more important to fix all the links to the film article first. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 04:25, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Give you the chance to do what? To fix what? Nothing was broken. In general, all the naming guidelines discourage pre-emptive disambiguation from articles that don't yet exist. The existing article should be located at the simplest available name. Until another film called Touch has an article, disambiguation for such a film or films can, and typically is, handled by dab page listings and hatnotes. If you intend to create an article for another film called Touch, create it first and then move the existing article and fix the links.--ShelfSkewed Talk 04:47, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
You didn't bother letting me finish before you jumped in. I've created the disambiguation page now. I know very well how things work around here, so please stop treating me like some wet-behind-the-ears newb. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 05:19, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Template:Expand TFD

In light of the fact that the TFD nomination itself contained many highly misleading and inaccurate statements along with a very inaccurate timeline of events, which led to further problematic arguments in the TFD, I ask that you restore this page as it was. One major point, User:Rich Farmbrough did not restore the template in February 2011 as a "test case" for Wikipedia:Soft deletion (a failed proposal from 2007) as the nom stated, and the code in the template page had less to do with historical use and more to do with allowing old page revisions to continue to work. Now that the template page has been turned into a dab page (which the documentation subpage previously took care of), we now have an even much larger mess...

The actual history of {{Expand}} is partially documented along with {{Deleted template}} in links from this TFD which you closed back in February 2012, but these links should help clarify that the sequence of events were far different from what the nom claimed in this most recent TFD:

In light of this, while I (or someone else) could obviously make a very strong case for an overturn at DRV, I think it would be better for someone less involved (not me) to explain to the nom that his arguments were inaccurate and did not reflect the actual events that took place. At the very least, for now, the talk page should be restored and the subpages User:TenPoundHammer continued to obsess over either restored or moved back to my userspace. --Tothwolf (talk) 10:11, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

[I'm familiar with this whole mess partially due to some of the extensive work I did on {{Deleted template}} [1] when code design issues surfaced after the VPP discussion and one of the MFDs TenPoundHammer initiated. --Tothwolf (talk) 10:30, 9 May 2012 (UTC)]

MFD

I have a couple of questions about your close of Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Category:WikiProject Natural phenols and polyphenols articles. You have recommended to take the discussion to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy, but as far as I can tell, that page doesn't seem to apply. That page seems to be for either unpopulated categories or for categories to be renamed or merged which isn't that case for this set of categories for deletion. Also, the MFD had several templates listed, but they shouldn't go to WP:CFDS either. Should the templates be re-nominated at MFD or somewhere else? Or if these deletions are all "non controversial", as you call them, couldn't you just speedy delete all of them? ChemNerd (talk) 19:46, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

It would be best to task a bot with all the replacements for the templates and categories, then request speedy deletion for the categories and simply redirect the templates. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 07:34, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Nomination of List of free fan conventions for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of free fan conventions is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of free fan conventions until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. I am adding this notice as you appear to have had the most edits to the page. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 01:48, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Compound adjectives

Re: your comments in opposition at WP:CFDS: In the phrase "People of XXXX-period Japan", "XXXX-period" is an adjective. Since it has two parts, it is called a compound adjective and the two parts are connected by a hyphen. Of course when we just have "XXXX period" not acting as an adjective, there is no hyphen, because it is not acting as an adjective. Thus, the article is at Edo period but if "Edo period" is used as an adjective, it is hyphenated. Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:48, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

That is not always the case anymore. Styles are moving the other direction now in a move to make punctuation far less complicated. There is no need to hyphenate in this case. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 05:50, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
It's in Wikipedia MOS and is widely used in WP text, including categories. In these cases, it does clarify, in my opinion, and it makes it look like we have read a style book. I thought the need to explain because your stated opposition cited the fact that the noun forms were not hyphenated. Anyway, I've moved them to a full discussion so others will decide. Hi, Nihonjoe. I don't believe we've ever interacted, so feel free to dismiss me as an interfering busybody if you like. What brought me here was this, which was without a doubt the least temperate comment from an admin, let alone a bureaucrat, I've seen in a long time. I'm usually pretty reluctant to comment when I see stuff like that, for fear of adding fuel to the fire, and I have absolutely no desire to pursue this any further. Nevertheless, in this case I feel moved to ask: couldn't you have communicated the exact same sentiments—preferably on V.'s user talk page—without resorting to name-calling? I'm a seasoned enough editor to be pretty much unshockable when it comes to talk page drama, but I can't help wonder what newbies showing up to participate in their first RfC would think. It's not setting a very good example. Rivertorch (talk) 08:46, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

The thing is, when I added the request, I didn't think about all the other projects I've edited like Commons, Wikibooks, Wikipedia in other languages etc. Managing them all after this account is renamed would be a real pain. So I was wondering if you could decline my request? Oh, it seems that the name I requested is not taken and so I should ask for a simple rename. Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:26, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Railway stations in Japan

Hmm, very strange question. I think you should know because you spent a lot of time in Japan (e.g. Nishi-Kanda-eki is one word in Japanese and it should be transcribed this way). I can not find anything connected with hyphens in the manual. Could you show me precisely? --Seibun (talk) 13:16, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

On what do you base your interpretation that it is one word? ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:53, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
On university knowledge, studies in Japan, international standards, dictionaries, handbooks, long practice etc. Try to build a sentence, using particles ga or wa: "Nishi-Kanda-eki ga mieru ka". Ga refers to all elements: Nishi, Kanda, eki. The word, which precedes ga is the subject of the sentence (e.g. Intermediate Japanese Reading Aids, Volume Two, Particles and Noun-supporting Words and Expressions by Yoko Matsuoka McClain, University of Oregon). Per analogiam: Nishi-Indo-shotō (Kenkyusha's New Japanese-English Dictionary, Kenkyusha Limited, p. 1237). --Seibun (talk) 07:11, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
The particle refers to the subject of the sentence (or the object, as the case may be). The subject/object doesn't have to be a single word in Japanese. Even in English you have subjects/objects which are multiple words, so your argument doesn't hold any water. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:13, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

MoS (Japan-related) & embedding Japanese in English Wikipedia, also Romanization

  • I don't know who put it in the MoS, but the advice on embedding Japanese in English Wikipedia is wrong. This section (recommending the Nihongo templates) is right, but somebody removed template:lang (see discussion below). Several kanji examples in this MoS page are also not properly language-tagged.
  • When embedding multiple languages in a web page, it's advisable to use the lang tag as semantic markup (1) to indicate the correct language to the browser—the browser will then choose a font that includes the character set for that language to render the snippet of text that you marked with language tags. The other reason (2) for using such semantic markup is that Google is not forced to guess the language—sometimes, or even often, it guesses wrong for Chinese and Japanese. The reason is that some Unicode character code points are shared by Chinese and Japanese. In a Japanese font, a Unicode character can be displayed quite differently than the same Unicode character displayed in a Chinese font. There are some examples here. With many European languages one can often get away with not using the lang tag. But Japanese embedded in English text and not properly tagged is likely to be garbled if displayed on a Chinese PC—and vice versa. In Wikipedia, the mechanism for lang-tagging is Template:Lang and other related templates such as the Nihongo templates for explaining embedded Japanese (there are also Chinese templates for explaining Chinese). In Japanese web pages, for example, if English is not tagged as such then it is displayed using a Japanese font, and looks really ugly.
  • On romanization, the modified Hepburn system is recommended, but this section has strange advice on the use of the particle which is usually written wo, and syllabic n , which is usually written as m before consonants. There's Shinbashi (wrong) but Shimbashi_Station (the official English name, the Asahi Shimbun (again, the official English name), Namba, Bampaku-kinen-kōen Station (Osaka) and lots of others. It's pretty easy to confirm usage with Google Insights for Search. LittleBen (talk) 04:49, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
    • That's because we generally don't use that template because it doesn't provide everything provided by {{nihongo}}. Browsers can easily recognize Unicode characters now, so tagging which language they are is pretty redundant and useless. As all Japanese is encoded as Unicode here on Wikipedia, this is not an issue. The {{lang}} template is outmoded and outdated. Your example is incorrect, too, as each character in Unicode is unique, so unless the browser is programmed incorrectly, it is impossible to display Unicode Character A as Unicode Character B.
      • You say that, "Browsers can easily recognize Unicode characters now, so tagging which language they are is pretty redundant and useless. As all Japanese is encoded as Unicode here on Wikipedia, this is not an issue", but maybe you didn't read my "Japanese embedded in English text and not properly tagged is likely to be garbled if displayed on a Chinese PC—and vice versa... The reason is that some Unicode character code points are shared by Chinese and Japanese. In a Japanese font, a Unicode character can be displayed quite differently than the same Unicode character displayed in a Chinese font. There are some examples here. ← (link to Wikipedia explanation)." I'm not suggesting that it's a big deal, but it would be good to get right. LittleBen (talk) 08:44, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
    • If you want to argue about the MOS, then go to that page. I'm not interested in arguing about it here on my talk page. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 04:07, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

It was redundant

The reason I removed it is because it looked as though it was left in by accident after a perhaps edit. It was a short introduction of the characters written directly after an introduction of the characters had just been mentioned. It was so redundant that I thought for sure it had to have been left in there as a mistake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.40.164.184 (talk) 05:11, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Help

I have been dealing with an IP editor who has decided that on behalf of a fandom I've apparently pissed off (including "experts" and "critics"), he will remove all of the original katakana forms (and romaji of those forms) of fictional proper nouns on a series of pages because the Japanese used English words transliterated into katakana (e.g. removing ベースステイツ for "Base States" because it's the Japanese using the English words "Base" and "States"). There was a similar issue a while back on another similar article that I consulted you on. Would you take a look here?—Ryulong (琉竜) 12:01, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Different issue, I'm coming across WP:OWN issues on Saint Seiya pages because someone at some point decided that no katakana forms of names (where a name in kanji or even rarely hiragana and katakana with kanji is pronounced as an English/Greek/etc. word in the media) should be included. Would you mind seeing what's what? This guy is also editing while logged out to make it appear it's 2 on 2 when it's really 2 on 1.—Ryulong (琉竜) 01:09, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

ANI Notice

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 09:44, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

I've added a comment top the thread which has been moved to WP:ANI#Personal attack by 107.6.114.84. I was also thinking that you refrain from direct involvement with the Senkaku Islands and related articles as your self-identification with Japan is an item of contention. I took a look at some of your edits plus {{Senkaku Islands sanctions}} and they seem entirely fine. The issue seems to be that you are a "nihon-linked" WP admin and thus more likely to have some bias as you'd be exposed to Japanese media and personal views with regard to the islands. --Marc Kupper|talk 17:00, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
I refrain (in general) from becoming directly involved in editing them as I get really annoyed with all sides whenever I've tried to do any editing. I've commented over there. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 05:51, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. I agreed that editing those articles will be an interesting little dance. --Marc Kupper|talk 06:00, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Nihonjoe-san: Please add the "definite article" ("the") before "ROC" at the very end of the introduction to this article (English must say "the PRC" and "the ROC", not just "ROC". I can't do this myself because the article is locked up. Thank you ! Writtenright (talk) 01:36, 18 September 2012 (UTC)writenright

Nihonjoe, as an administrator, you may have a conflict of interest on Diaoyu_Islands Discussion locking

As a administrator, Nihonjoe, I would like you to clarify possible conflict of interest for you to lock Diaoyu_Islands discussion, after it was edited, deleting original content and forwarded to Senkaku_Islands.

I request you inform us if there is a conflict of interest.

Here is my reason for suspecting conflict of interest: Diaoyu Islands being the Chinese name for Senkaku Islands. There is territorial disputes on these islands by China and Japan. As your name suggest, you may be affiliated to Japan. Nihonjoe in english is "Japanese Joe". Nihon means Japan.

I request you clarify if you coordinated with Klilidiplomus in the locking of Diaoyu_Islands discussion.

Diaoyu_Islands history shows you locked the discussion 5 minutes after Klilidiplomus vandalized the discussion, deleting everything and replacing it with a forward link to Senkaku_Islands(Japanese version of Diaoyu_Islands)

While on Senkaku_Islands discussion, Klilidiplomus made a 35,100 bytes final change. 7 minutes later, you locked that discussion as well.

There is no conflict of interest, and I didn't coordinate with Klilidiplomus. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 15:52, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
