I have come across an article (Robert Maxwell) where it's claimed that he is a "Fraudster". I have tried to change this to "suspected" etc to soften it up, because no court has ruled against Robert Maxwell (he died and then irregularities in his company books were discovered, his sons were tried and acquitted). I think it's worthy of a principle decision from Wikipedia, i.e. Should Wikipedia contributors write that a person is guilty of a crime even if no court has ruled that he is.Ubbe nationell (talk) 12:55, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Problem with 'Infobox university'

There seems to be a problem with the way 'Infobox university' works. From what I have had experience of, the infobox automatically assigns all non-academic staff numbers to "Administrative staff". It is possible that the infoboxes I have used are partial, and other classifications exist, I don't know. Certainly, some infoboxes have confused total staff numbers with "administrative staff", which is a problem in its own right. However, the main problem is that many non-academic employees of universities are not administrative, they are librarians, post-doctoral researchers, technicians, gardeners, electricians, IT specialists etc. I fear that disinformation is endemic to many or all articles using this infobox template. I think, ideally, the infobox should offer 'total staff numbers', and/or replacing the word 'administrative' with 'other staff' or 'non-academic staff'.Urselius (talk) 13:48, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Urselius, the best place to bring this up is at Template talk:Infobox university. The template isn't "automatic". An editor has to put the numbers in, hopefully with a supporting reference either in the article or in the infobox. But you make a good point. StarryGrandma (talk) 22:24, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi thanks. From my experience if you add a number when editing the infobox to "| staff" the resulting number on the actual page is flagged as "Administrative staff". This seems to be automatic. Therefore, on a number of pages people have added the total staff numbers only for it to appear as "Administrative staff". It seems to be a fault in the design of the infobox. I just write content and have not a clue as to how to fix a 'coding problem' for want of a better phrase. Urselius (talk) 10:44, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
Urselius, it turns out there is history involved. The fields used to be "faculty" and "staff" (titled Faculty and Staff) until someone pointed out that in British English faculty means department, as the Faculty of Classics at Cambridge University, not people who teach. So they changed to "academic_staff" and "administrative_staff". The code still recognizes the old names "faculty" and "staff" so that it didn't break existing uses of the template. Staff originally meant all the other employees and, as the documentation says far down on the template page, administrative staff means "administrative and support staff". This is confusing and I will take it up on the template talk page. StarryGrandma (talk)

Advice/Assistance with best way to make a substantial article re-organization with a 'busy' article

I am a novice Wikipedia editor, a retired technical author & editor familiar with some markup but new to wikipedia procedures, rules, and acronyms.

I am trying to reduce the reading and editing chaos in Electronic cigarette (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views). I have taken the content from a very recent point in time and have been reorganizing it at User:Jd4x4/Jd4x4/sandbox:ECigReorg and have posted that I am doing this on the Electronic cigarette talk page, asking for feedback but have only received one response that wasn't very helpful, and certainly not a consensus. And, this article is constantly being changed with minutia (wording, changing citations, undo's etc) so it's very hard to keep my copy up to date.

Is there someone that can look at the two pages (original & mine) and recommend my next steps, or advice on a different way to proceed? I don't think I want to cut & paste my changes as one big edit, or do I?

  • The article in question was changing minute by minute with no reply here (I get it), so I was simply bold and cut & pasted my reorganized version and will see how it goes. Jd4x4 My suggestion: Go slow, one section at a time. Starting from the bottom can work well. Take "Related technologies", work on that until you are happy with it, wait a couple of days for reactions, continue. If other editors get involved/revert/whatever, read their editsummaries (sometimes you may agree!), if necessary discuss/ask for clarification on the talkpage, and let it take time if needed. Finally, see what you've got and make necessary changes to the WP:LEAD, if any. As a novice, take a look at WP:BRD and WP:MEDRS. Human health topics are one of the areas on WP where policies are enforced most strictly (and editors have strong opinions on what is "right"), but that does not mean that the article can't be improved. I actually own a copy of your book and have enjoyed it very much! Unfortunately, since it is self-published (you also being the owner of the publisher, Riverview Publications) it does not meet the definition of a reliable source as required by Wikipedia and generally cannot be used as a source for information in articles here. That does not mean, incidentally, that all the sources which have been used in Riverview Park (Chicago) are (or are not) proper sources, it just means that if there are improper sources that they should be removed, rather than additional improper sources being added. I asked JJMC89 if I could be given access to the article once more, explaining that in fact there was no copyright infringement. On 28 November I wrote the following message to JJMC89 to explain:

I see the source of confusion now! Kabir Helminski (with whom I have declared connection) has actually posted my entire draft article on his own website (I shared it with him). He credited is as coming from Wikipedia but did not realise that it is only a draft and therefore likely to be viewed as infringing his own copyright! Kabir Helminski immediately did as I asked and deleted from his own website (www.sufism.org) the text I had created on Wikipedia. However, JJMC89 would not consider my case. Here is JJMC89’s response:

The first time JJMC89 is referring to is when the article was deleted for being considered un-noteworthy and lacking independent citations. I believe the revised article successfully resolved these issues but it was never given an opportunity to be assessed on that basis. I therefore ask that it be given one.

Please note that Kabir Helminski has been cited as one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world and his books have been published into 11 different languages by reputable publishing houses. One of his books (Living Presence) has become a ‘cornerstone edition’ at Tarcher (an imprint of Penguin Random House) and was recently re-published as a 25th anniversary edition. Needless to say, Kabir Helminski is willing to verify that I have not infringed his copyright.

A review of available sources including the law placed on the Talk Page shows that Hungary is 12 month deferral for the affected category. Permanent deferment is only for those who have actually contracted HIV (along with various other diseases).

Help with COI

Hey! I really don't mean to bother you guys. So here's the thing: I want to edit this article for factual concerns about a newspaper that I happen to be editor for, which would mean that I would have to disclose my COI. So here's where I start to get a little iffy. See, I happen to be a high school junior, and the newspaper happens to be my high school newspaper. So right now I'm in this awkward situation of "should i disclose my COI and basically vet my dumb 17-year-old ass."

Basically: I'm a minor who has a COI and am torn b/w disclosing it and you know, not narrowing my identity to about 15 different teenagers in my area. What should I do?

With a COI, you shouldn't be editing the article at all. Edits should be requested on the article talk page using the {{request edit}} template, instead. But if you're concerned about revealing your real world identity, however, by doing so (and you should be), it would be best if you did not edit the article at all. While things can seem very important and urgent, Wikipedia is in this for the long haul and there is no hurry. If the needed changes are important enough, someone else will eventually make them. I left the truly-awful article about the business I worked for untouched for years for that very reason (and I had a lot more camouflage for modifying it than you do). I have read it, let me quote the relevant bits for you since you apparently have not read it closely. First sentence, second paragraph: "COI editing is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia." If that's not, "shouldn't be editing the article at all" I'll eat my hat. And then it goes on in the WP:COIEDIT section, fourth bullet point, to say that instead that the {{request edit}} method should instead be used, just as I said above. I'll grant you that "strongly discouraged" is not "prohibited" but a "how to edit with a COI" recommendation or tutorial would certainly fly against the spirit of the policy. The explanatory supplement Plain and simple conflict of interest guide, linked in the policy, puts it far more bluntly in more than one place, the first being "Do not edit articles about yourself, your family or friends, your organization, your clients, or your competitors." Sayuurii, reliability is not the only issue. To establish that the subject is notable, you need several reliable independent published sources with in-depth discussion of the subject. Wikipedia does not count as a reliable source (and anyway, the Wikipedia articles you had cited did not even mention the bakery). A potential competence issue

Hello all. I was originally going to post this at WP:AN, but I think a less formal/official venue might be better off for now. I am questioning the competence level of a fellow user, Tia Canita (talk · contribs), and have for at least two years now. English is not their first language and their persistent use of poor grammar has become quite a burden on other editors having to clean-up. They exclusively edit articles related to The Walking Dead TV series, so the pool of users they interact with is fairly small. Their issues include run-on sentences, incorrect use of gender pronouns, and general poor grammar/odd word choice.

They were first warned in April 2018 about incorrect gender pronoun use and grammar issues; I subsequently warned them again in February and October 2019 about this, but they didn't respond and the same issues still existed. I made another attempt just a few days ago, and they finally responded, stating "I am very sorry I do not know how to speak a lot, English my English is not perfect if it bothers you so much that I edit in my bad grammar correct it or finally check my test area and there you correct it greetings"

I went through their edit history to grab some examples of their various grammar issues. I know it states not to copy large amounts text, so I'll try and be brief, but obviously I want to show my case here.

  • When the user adds something with correct grammar, it's because it's copied from other sources. This edit is copied from here; this from here; and this from here; though he inserts incorrect wording such as "In the episode mid-season premiere" or referring to a season finale episode as a "final season".
  • The biggest issue here is that this user makes edits when they add massive chunks of text, such this, this, and this. All these edits have to be reviewed and basically rewritten from scratch; this generates tons of work for other editors to do which is unfair. An IP commented "Contributors need to know how to write" referring to one of the episode summaries written by them. Here an IP fixes the various gender pronoun mistakes, something Tia Canita is still making despite being warned multiple times; the first which occurred almost two years ago.

Now, I'm looking for opinions from other editors if this indeed is a valid WP:CIR issue that can be raised at WP:AN. Drovethrughosts (talk) 20:02, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Now its content is OKish but it requires someone of some talent to go through it and wordsmith it a bit. How do I go about finding someone. I can see no evidence that the page has been submitted for review. By the way, what is the subject's name? Your sandbox variously gives it as "TAS" and "Tas", while some of the sources cited give "Taş". Maproom (talk) 21:36, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

@NatroneDay:, before proceeding with any further edits, to the Pat Day page or anywhere else, I highly recommend that you read the following links on the Core Content Policies and the Contributing to Wikipedia pages. The text you are removing looks like an over-reaction to the criticism in the lead paragraph. Any biography of a living person on Wikipedia must have all statements sourced but statements that do have a source are usually retained. The correct thing to do is not to keep making the same edits (that's called edit warring and can lead to blocking your ability to edit the project), but to use the article talk page. Every article has a talk page where you can discuss what you think is problematic about the article and reach an agreement with other editors. This is a normal, even vital, part of editing articles about people. I hope this helps and is not overwhelming. Please feel free to contact me at my talk page if you have any further questions. Graphing data pulled from wikidata

I'm helping an editor set up a graph for coronavirus cases. Is there a way to pull data from Wikidata instead of coding it into the article with {{Graph:Chart}}? ☆ Bri (talk) 19:41, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

Bri, there doesn't seem to be a way. The template {{Graph:Lines}} was written to support using data from Wikidata. However using a wikidata query no longer works and, according to the phab ticket linked to from the template page, doesn't seem to be getting fixed. StarryGrandma (talk) 21:05, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Bri, you might want to look into putting the data on Commons. Graph:Lines can display data that is in a table on Commons. The first example in the template documantation takes its data from Commons at c:Data:Bls.gov/US Women's weekly earnings as a percent of men's by age, annual averages.tab. confusing information - request for full protection to page

On behalf of the Norman Petty Estate / Norman Petty Studios LLC we had previously requested a lock to the wiki page for producer Norman Petty as it is frequently changed erroneously and replaced with slanderous information by Buddy Holly fans, to the point of defamation. This page has no reason to be edited whatsoever and we are requesting it to be locked or "full protection" against any further or future editing.

Due to the controversial nature of this Battle, in it being a Barbaric assault on a Civilian airport, I would kindly like to ask for editing support from any other responsible editor who is in good conscience of writing detailed, exact, and truthful information about the battle. Users have edited constructively, however because of political vandals, they had destroyed bits of information very crucial to this event.

We are talking about The Tripoli central and International Airport. 10-11 Planes missing, Infrastructure Damage, Oil and Fuel destruction. Black plumes in the sky, Environment pollution, and most important civilian casualties. This should be constituted without a doubt as a Warcrime, but because this information hasnt seeped out as much, it is being forgotten, and the Billions of Dollars in damage gone.

P.S. I heard plenty of shelling the entire month to know for sure that the airport was intentionally cratered with Artillery in the most barbaric of ways one can imagine. And if anyone remembers, The Geneva conventions clearly state that this is a Factual, Documentable War Crime. It has resulted in the destruction of Libyan peoples welfare and has made us more destitute over the petty squables, agendas of very vile criminals. Moreover, the very brazen idea that they can just omit such a huge event, such as an attack on a civilian airport, is shocking to me. I cannot edit all these articles on my own!!!

IT APPEARS THAT THE CONTENT IS COPIED FROM THE CELEBRITY'S EGOTISTICAL INTERVIEWS IN THE MEDIA WITHOUT ANY EFFORT TO CONFIRM THE FACTS, RESULTING IN ANGER AND EMBARRASSMENT TO THOSE WHO POSSESS THE EVIDENCE TO THE CONTRARY.

Article about Triglidae (Gurnards, Sea Robins)

The article contains the following assertion:

"The large surface area of the fins also permits the fish to glide short distances above the water surface, much like a flying fish."

I do not believe anyone has ever seen a sea robin or gurnard do this. They are essentially benthic and would never, under normal circumstances find themselves at the surface. I also doubt that they could achieve a high enough velocity to glide like a flying fish.

While personal observations such as that cannot be used as a reliable source in Wikipedia (see WP:BURDEN), the assertion in the article is unsourced. Mike Schwartz, you are correct about threads with no recent comments being archived, but it is a bot, not a person, who does so. That being said, it looks like what you are proposing is not particularly noteworthy; just someone posting a video on the Internet. I would not be in favor of adding trivia like that to articles. Company Logo Outdated

Hello,

My name is Dan and I am in charge of the online marketing for EXL (EXL). I would really appreciate your help updating the EXL logo that is not outdated and does not reflect the companies current image. I tried contacting the editor, Jovianeye, who uploaded the previous logo but have received no response from him in over a week. I can understand that he is busy but I would like to get this logo updated as soon as possible.

The old logo is at File:EXL Logo.gif. Our new logo that we would like displayed on the EXL page can be found on http://www.exlservice.com/images/exl_logo.png. The name for this file should be EXL_Logo.png. I would really appreciate if assistance on updating this or even some guidance on getting this changed could be provided. Hillary Clinton - no criticisms

I have long respected Wikipedia. I love the idea of millions of editors.

But I'm shocked that there isn't a 'criticisms' section for Hillary Clinton. She has been a public figure for many decades and has many controversial actions and statements. Condy Rice has a criticisms section, rightfully so. I'll be checking to see if a more impartial portrait of Mrs Clinton is displayed in the coming weeks.

I do worry that Wikipedia is losing its impartiality, I remember looking at Van Jones' glowing description a few years ago. It looked as though Van himself had written it. But, thankfully, it was fixed.

I'll send a copy of this little letter to a few journalist also.

How about, rather than contacting journalists, you do a little research? You could start by reading Wikipedia:Criticism: "Editors should avoid having a separate section in an article devoted to criticism, controversies, or the like because these sections call undue attention to negative viewpoints. Instead, articles should present positive and negative viewpoints from reliable sources together, fairly, proportionately, and without bias."
Our articles on George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon contain no 'criticism' sections. And neither for that matter does our article on Condoleezza Rice - it has a section entitled 'Public perception and criticism', but that is a different thing. I agree that Wikipedia may be losing it's NPOV and having visited the Hillary R. Clinton talk page it is very evident there. To help address this issue I am pushing for the activation of Wikipedia NPOV policy in Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. In the last 8 years, apparently, certain sources have been outright banned no matter the context or use case. Which is, of course, a violation of policy. If policy is not restored I fear we may lose Wikipedia as a reputable source in all cases. Dispute involves both content and user conduct--best avenue?

Hi. I'm involved in a multi-editor dispute (five longstanding, three current) that's been going on for months. Most of the parties involved have been within the bell curve of reasonable, but one guy is a real problem: He's written some biased noticeboard filings and refused to change them, undermined attempts to resolve the dispute, and demanded to see precedents, sources and policies only to ignore or denigrate them once they were found to be contrary to his position. None of that's specifically against the rules, though. He also has his complaints about me. While this is primarily a content dispute, I feel that I and other editors could have come to a mutually acceptable solution by now if not for his efforts (or at least proceeded toward one in a less dramatic manner). Again, he probably feels similarly about me. Should I seek resolution here or elsewhere? Like I said, most of the stuff he's doing isn't specifically against the rules, so this isn't about reporting anyone for an infraction. Large, complex disputes like that aren't likely to be resolved here. I like to think of EAR as the ANI of content disputes; it's best suited for things where there's a clear answer or can otherwise be dealt with summarily. CLIO AWARDS

In reading your editorial on THE CLIO AWARDS please be advised that I, Sandra Inbody-Brick, was hired by Ruth Ratny as the Executive Producer of THE NEW CLIO AWARDS. I was the Executive Producer of the LOS ANGELES ADVERTISING CLUB'S BELDING AWARDS for eleven years and recognized nationally for that event. During that time I had elevated the Belding Awards in both entries and attendance at the Awards Show. On March 22, 1987 the show was held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Music Center with over 2,000 people in attendance.

As you have accurately reported on June 13, 1991 the Advertising Industry's best know award show explodes into a frenzy in which attendees storm the stage and steal Clio Awards. On August 19, 1991 Clio owner Bill Evans has turned to a small Wall Street firm to find investors for the awards show and insists "There will be a Clio's for 1992."

On September 27, 1991 Ruth Ratny's Screen Intl., the Chicago-based publisher of Screen Magazine, purchases the Clio trademark for $10,000.00, and on February 17, 1992 ADWEEK'S headline story was, "INBODY-BRICK GETS THE HONOR OF PRODUCING 1992 CLIO AWARDS." The story was written by Betsy Sharkey, who today is a movie and film editor with the LA TIMES.

It's content is as follows: LOS ANGELES - Ad vet Sandy Inbody-Brick, who has produced awards shows in the West for nearly a decade, has been named executive producer of the 1992 Clio Awards. Resurrecting the Clios will be a formidable task. The once-coveted Clios were debased last year when then-owner Bill Evans never arrived at the show, leaving a caterer to emcee and the bills unpaid. The show ended with angry contenders rushing to the stage. Chicago-Based Ruth Ratny bought the name after the fiasco and began trying to rebuild. "I was at the Belding judging last weekend," says Inbody-Brick, referring to the Ad Club of L.A.'s show which she has produced for one years. "Sitting with judges from around the country, I heard a lot about what they thought needed to be fixed with the Clios."

On September 4, 1992 the Los Angeles Times article by Bruce Horovitz "HELLO CLIO, WHAT'S NEW?" also raised the issue of whether or not the event would take place at all. To produce the show Ratny , has turned to Los Angeles ad woman Sandra Inbody-Brick who is best known for producing the last 10 Belding Award shows, the West Coast's top advertising competition. Inbody-Brick implemented new standards for judging the competition. In the past, the judging was loosely run and criticized for its lack of organization. "If the Clios falls flat on its face this year, I know it's my face that will be flattened." Most ad executives say they expect they the Clios will survive. But, if the Clio Awards is another flop again this year, said adman Phil Dusenberry, "you can kiss it goodbye forever."

Well, the show went on with Tony Randall as the host and there were over 500 advertising people in the audience! It was a success and the Clio's are still going strong. I played a significant role in bringing them back after the fiasco and would appreciate that information being included in your commentary on the Clio Awards.

I have been trying to create a page about Sushmita Banerjee, a noted Indian Classical danseuse. However, the has been deleted due to lack of reference. Vidushi Sushmita Banerjee is a renowned artiste and have a commendable presence on the internet. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Please help. However, if she is a noted and renowned classical dancer, there should be third-party articles about her that you can cite to establish her artistic notability. @Madhulinabardhan: The article was at Sushmita Banerjee (Kathak Exponent). It was deleted a few times for promotion, which is entirely correct. It included a bunch of language like "...one of the most distinguished...", "...revived the Katha Shaili of Kathak under the able guidance...", "...graded artiste...". There were several decent-looking references listed, and it's possible we could have an appropriate article on this individual, but it must be written in a neutral, not promotional, tone. Also, the massive list of performances, accomplishments, etc., is not necessary. If there are a few that are extensively noted in reliable sources, those could be noted in the article text. Two book pages deleted

Almost immediately after I created two book pages, they were nominated for deletion. The pages both cited several reviews that were independent of the books, the first requirement of notability. I feel strongly that the sources themselves were notable. One of the books, for example, was featured for an entire episode of Glenn Beck's television program. Glenn Beck may be right wing, but he is obviously notable. Some claimed that Glenn Beck was not notable as a reference and was "self published," for example. Other sources were right wing, as well, including the New American and the Western Journalism Center. It is my understanding that "right wing bias" is not a disqualification for notability, just as "left-wing bias" would not be a disqualification (as I pointed out on the deletion page). The pages were: Barack Obama and the Enemies Within and The Enemies Within: Communists, Socialists and Progressives in the U.S. Congress."ReneeNal (talk) 06:46, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

These two articles were deleted as the result of an articles for deletion discussion. You are correct that we would not delete an article for being about a right-wing subject; we certainly have articles on Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and other notable right-wing figures. However, notability is not inherited. The fact that these individuals mentioned something would not make that thing notable. It appears that the clear consensus at those deletion discussions was that there are not at this time sufficient references available to maintain those articles. We generally want to see a pretty good range of sources to help maintain neutrality. You can try speaking with the closer of the discussions or requesting a deletion review, but given the clear consensus at the discussions in question, that's very unlikely to change the result. I already "advised". Speak to the deleting admins first, go to DRV if you can't come to agreement with them. Like I said, I don't give you good odds, but that's the route to appeal if you want to. Besides the fact that the edit as such is purely POV it also defies logic. How can a group founded in the twentieth century predate a group originally founded in the late nineteenth century?? Besides that the edit deletes well-resourced material. The reason for me turning to this noticeboard is that I am officially banned from articles relating to Nichiren Buddhism. Content Adding with COI

Hello - I'm new to adding content to wiki but a long time fan of the encyclopedia. Currently, I work for a newspaper group and we felt -- consider the ages of our individual newspapers, and the community impact of each -- that the encyclopedia should include us. However, after my first article, I was informed about COI, among other things. I want to take all steps to be a contributing member to Wikipedia, but also need to figure out the best way to get a nonbiased, factual representation of the newspapers within your data banks. What would be the best way of doing this while maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia and also following the applicable rules?

Should I propose a template and content within the talk pages and let others confirm and submit to the actual page by using the "request edit" tag? Should I post a note at the COI noticeboard and just add content as usual? Some combination of both?

I happened to be reading an Ex-Congressman's bestseller, in which he cites recollections of then chief-of-staff Admiral Thomas Moorer, about a visit Moorer had with Mordechai Gur, then Israeli defense attaché to the Israeli embassy. This throws much light on the public character of Gur, so I added a short paragraph describing this revealing episode to the entry: Mordechai Gur. Someone (no name given), deleted it, with the utmost tact and politeness, on the grounds that it is "unsourced garbage." Could an administrator look into the matter and decide how to deal with it? In the meantime, I reverted the entry to my version (It took me more than an hour to make that contribution, and I am convinced that it's informative, accurate, and serves Wikipedia's stated goals). The author of that book, Paul Findley, is well known as a harsh critic of Israel, and his opinions may consitute undue weight in a biography of Gur. The content you wrote pushes a point of view and describes opinion as fact. Use of loaded, judgmental words like "disdain", "mere", "demanding" "refused" and "undermining" is not an acceptable style of encyclopedia writing. Editing dispute due to lack of WP policy re: use of famous university alumni images

This is to request for immediate editor/admin assistance for mediation and arbitration concerning the question: What is or should be the appropriate WP rule, practice or policy regarding images posted on the "Notable People/Alumni" section of any WP university entry/article, AND why is it not applied universally to all university articles with the same exact issue???" Please go to the McGill University Talk page and scroll all the way down to the section titled "Gallery of rich and famous." Two editors yesterday deleted all images of the famous alumni of McGill University shown in its "Notable People" section when, in fact, these are all high-achieving individuals each with a separate WP bio entry. Worse, these two editors would not do the same deletion and editing for hundreds of universities in WP with the same images of their famous alumni under their exactly the same "Notable People/Alumni" section. In short, it is apparent that they are singling out McGill University in the absence of a universal WP rule, practice or policy regarding alumni images on WP university/college articles. We therefore need mediation because the discussion in the Talk page is not being used to reach a consensus and the editors participating there are the same ones who have a conflict of interest by unilaterally deleting all McGill University alumni images while pretending to host a Talk page. Please help settle this matter and establish any pertinent WP policy or practice that will not just be unilaterally and single-handedly applied to one university but to all similarly/exactly situated university articles on WP. Burt Harris, if an assertion is not in dispute, one or two references are generally sufficient to support that assertion. Ten references all saying the same thing don't really affect notability. If the additional references provide more information, you could use them to expand the article instead of reference bombing a single assertion. So choose the one or two best reliable and independent sources used for each assertion, and remove the rest. Antarctica data

Hallo, I recently corrected some data in Wiki relative to the geographical coordinates of a South Ice Base in Antarctica: it was my first modification intervention in Wiki. Since I am interested in Geography and Antarctica in particular, as well as the flight simulator that I use for three-dimensional geographic surveys, I started a (free) Antarctica4XPlane project with international contributions 6 years ago. I, in particular, have created two multimedia tools that can be used interactively and freely via WEB: - a Catalog made up of PDF files containing information about Antarctic sites (Research Bases, Airports and much more) - an interactive map of Antarctica showing all the sites listed in the Catalog (with a link via the link from the map to the relative card) I was wondering if inserting links to these two tools on the corresponding Wiki pages could be useful. But I would not like that, which I consider an addition of informations, to be unwelcome or not considered pertinent to the chosen setting. Hence this request. Question about post-nominal letters

Does the current wording of MOS:POSTNOM allow for post-nominals indicating with membership in a religious institute, like S.J. or O.F.M., in the lede of a biography article. Or would it be better to say "... is a member of X religious institute"? There has been some discussion on the MOS talk page, but the discussion involved a very small number of editors and did not result in a change of wording of the MOS, so I am unsure whether or not to follow the actual MOS wording or not. @FyzixFighter:, I don't think the MOS or its talk page addresses these usages. The MOS is focused almost entirely on the post-nominals carried as honours from a sovereign and is highly context-dependent on the British system of those. The only related discussion that is currently on the talk page I see is about academic degrees. Membership in a Catholic or other religious order is not analogous to either case. My own opinion is that the post-nominals for these orders provide at least as much context and useful information to the reader as, say, the Order of the British Empire. The most recent New Years Honours List announcing new members of that Order ran to over 20 pages yet I've never seen CBE or OBE challenged as "too common" or "not helpful" or anything. The usage of S.J., at least, appears to be widespread and accepted. Francis Xavier, Joseph of Anchieta, John Ogilvie (saint), etc. all use it in the ledes. I have tried editing a page twice now but, both times, my edits disappear after a few minutes when I reload the page. I even had a message after the first attempt, acknowleging my edits. Then they were gone!

What I did was log in, make the edits, and click on Publish. Am I doing something wrong? Have I missed something out?

Your edits did not "disappear" per se, they were removed by another editor. See the history page for that article to see what happened. If you believe that the reasons for removal were inadequate, post your argument for your edits in a new section at the bottom of the article talk page and ask for discussion. I would like to request the creation of a graphical chronological timeline be created for the TV show history of the 'List of WWE television programming' page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WWE_television_programming).

I am referring to the kind of timeline you usually see for members of a band (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Fleetwood_Mac_members#Timeline). Over the past few years, I've noticed that someone has been sabotaging Frank Spotnitz's Wikipedia page. There was a complete page of accurate info about three or four years ago, which was then mysteriously taken down, even though the info was all correct and verifiable on other internet sources like IMDb. Another user then put up a very brief, concise bio, which has been wrongly re-written several times by the following users:

RATAJMIRO 109.66.97.97 Myrefoclock 79.183.2.39 109.65.51.201 - this user is constantly editing Jewish people's pages on Wikipedia or making them out to be Jewish

For some reason they seem to want to comment on Frank's status as a Jew, which is both weird and irrelevant. Every time a user corrects the information, these users sabotage the correction.

How can the page be corrected for good, without fear that someone will write inappropriate information on Frank Spotnitz? Many other television writers and producers have long, flawless pages that aren't subject to the same disruption.

I spot-checked some - not all - of the edits by the users you name and none of them seemed to me to be blatantly inappropriate and the sources cited seemed to be reliable. There's no "corrected for good" at Wikipedia, everything is established by consensus and consensus can change at any time. The closest you can probably get to that is to, first, discuss the issues that you object to on the article talk page and seek to come to consensus. If you cannot, then try a request for comments. If you get a strong consensus one or the other of those ways, then it will be hard for anyone to change it (particularly in the short run) since a new consensus will have to be formed. Asking for technical help to solve issue with charts format

I would like to ask for some technical assistance in solving an annoying problem with the Template:Graph:Chart: briefly said, it is possible to format the x-axis as a "date" axis, however this works perfectly if the graph is of type "line" i.e. as a continuous line, while it breaks if the graph is of type "rect" i.e. as a bar chart. An additional issue is that it also breaks when defining an x-axis range though xmin and xmax, again only with the "date" type. You could join the discussion in the talk page. English versions of non-english wiki pages

A notable person has been revered to in several articles and it is important for users to be able to identify them. I would like to create an article on this individual in the English Wikipedia. Thankfully I am confident an article already exists on a non-english version of wikipedia. How do I find it? My problem is that since the article does not exist on the English wikipedia I cannot simply follow a link to find it. Furthermore I cannot find the relevant article on the non-english wiki (if it exists) because the English translation of the individuals name does not return any results; nor do machine translations of the individuals name (a common issue due to anglization).

If I can find the relevant article in the non-English wikipedia I can use the sources after verifying them and find relevant information. Regards.Willthewanderer (talk) 07:07, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Good question, Willthewanderer. There are two ways. If you can guess the likely languages an existing Wikipedia article is written in, you can search for them at https://www.wikipedia.org/ and select the possible language. But the better way is simply to Google search the person's name, and include a domain-search command. It would look like this: "personsname site:wikipedia.org" I often find doing that too fiddly, so I get quicker and seemingly just as good results just by typing "personsname wiki", and Google's magic does the rest, showing me different language wikipedia results all on one page. Unfortunately the person in question's native language does not use Latin characters; thus searching the phonetic English equivalent did not and was unlikely to yield results; nor did google.
Many common names in languages which do not use Latin characters and/or is tonal have multiple possible phonetic translations and may even be transliterated; thus these people are likely to assume an "English name" which would not generally appear in native language sources.
While it is possible that there is no article, I would be very much surprised if this was the case.

But if you do find in-depth, reliable sources about them, then you are free to start to draft an article yourself. (See WP:YFA and WP:AFC for help). The editing rights of editors who do not log in (“IP editors”) is limited. (That’s usually because the article is being damaged by things like vandalism coming from IP editors.) It is relatively easy to become autoconfirmed: Just create an account, log in, and then make just 10 edits to unprotected articles over a period of 4 days. Then whenever you log in to edit, the system will recognize you as autoconfirmed and allow you to do most things an IP editor cannot. Specific Source Link to Library

So I am not really experienced with editing articles but added some info to improve this article. I have added a source to support the info that's from a musical rights association library Buma Stemra titelcatalogus. But the link grabbed from library only posts directly to the library instead of the actual search results to the support this info. Is there a way to get a specific link that directly goes to the relevant search results. There's also another problem I run into a unknown editor who constantly removes the information claiming false sources. Can a moderator take a look at this? By "pronouns" I presume that you mean "preferred pronouns". We can only include information which is reported in reliable sources as defined by Wikipedia, so that's the first limitation. Second, there's generally no standard for what particular information is or is not required to be included in articles; there's some standards on some things that cannot be included (see, for example, WP:BLP) and the quality of information that can be included (especially in regard to living persons, see that last link), but very few or no standards on what must be included. That's kind of in keeping with the base philosophy of Wikipedia that it's the encyclopedia anyone can edit. (You may find various wikiprojects which seem to set such standards such as WikiProject Women artists, but those pages are just advice that anyone can take or leave at their choice, not rules that must be obeyed.) But that's just about including material listing what pronouns they prefer. We do have policy about what pronouns that we actually use in writing articles, however. Edits to Trivium (band) being rejected without adequate discussion

TL;DR: I made some changes to the article, and backed up my discussion with Wikipedia guidelines, but my points have been shut down with hostile messages and I can't restore the changes because I don't want to get into an edit war.

I've made a number of changes to this page (outlined in the talk section here: Talk:Trivium (band)#Revert of good faith edits). These were reverted by User:Tobi999tomas with no discussion, then after I tried to discuss but got no response I restored them, and they were reverted again. After this the other editor said why they made the changes, and I responded. The next day with no response I restored the changes again (after reading the guidelines I now see I should not have done this, and at the very least I should have waited longer (I had left a message on their talk page and made sure they'd been active in the meantime before making the change), so I apologise for this).

This was reverted with the rather hostile edit message "I already told you, there is nothing to say anymore." We had some discussion on the talk page, and I cited the relevant wikipedia guidelines to back up my changes, but the other editor did not listen to my points and told me to stop discussing it with the message "So stop this, cause you already said that you don't want any edit war, and you are causing one." (when asking the user for discussion on their talk page I had said that I wanted to resolve the matter in a civil manner and would not get into an edit war). There has now been no response for a couple of days.

I feel like my changes have been completely shut down without adequate consideration, despite them helping to solve the improvement tags in the article. As a new user this experience has been incredibly frustrating and unpleasant, but I don't want to just forget about it because I really want to improve the article (Trivium is one of my favourite bands). Any help/advice about how to resolve this is much appreciated. Note that I previously requested a third opinion on the content, but that was rejected because another editor had responded to one of the points and there were multiple issues being discussed.

Timeline of historic inventions - unexplained reversions, other than stating WP:BRD.

A couple of explanation free WP:BRD reversions have been made to the Timeline of historic inventions, that reinstate erroneous text. The editor has not responded to an invitation to discuss / explain his actions on either his own, or the articles talk page.

The page also has numerous entries that require either a non-generic date, and [[WP:RS] citation, or removal.

Need help understanding credibility of sources/notability and input on correct writing style.

Mlepisto, if you want the article to be saved from deletion, you're going to have to establish that Chicone is notable, by citing several reliable independent published sources with in-depth discussion of him. Not passing mentions, not articles based on press releases, not articles based on what he said himself. Maybe you've already cited some sources like that; but when they're hidden among dozens of worthless references, editors contributing to the Article for Deletion discussion are likely to miss them. References are judged on quality, not quantity. If you haven't found four good sources, then find them. And get rid of all the worthless ones – they're not actually against Wikipedia policy, but they certainly weaken your chance of having the article accepted. Four good references, maybe even three if that's all you can find, will be better than the 30 currently cited in the article. Maproom (talk) 21:24, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you Maproom - this has been the first piece of actual guidance I have been offered. I have perhaps incorrectly understood that "multiple independent sources may be combined to demonstrate notability" would benefit from these additional sources and that Chicone has received awards for his work as both a creative professional (outdoor writing) and is widely cited by peers within his industry that it would benefit from the additional sources to help establish that. The industry is small, and so are the number of peers. I have been feeling that it is very difficult for someone inexperienced like myself to determine what is a "good" source to establish that based on the fact fly fishing is not a sport that a significant portion of the world population participate in so peer citations and publications are ignored because they are not on the same level as national media and household names. Where should I put supplementary information?

I'm writing an article on programming language A. This language tests programs written in programming language B.

Occasionally, it would be useful to show a program in language B, to allow the reader to reproduce the test. However, this article is not about language B, and adding code in language B will reduce the article's readability.

So, here's the question: is there somewhere I can "hide away" supplementary information like this? In principle, I could put it on an external website, and just add something like "click here to see the program in language B". However, this is obviously not the right thing to do, so can you suggest any alternatives? Is there somewhere on wikipedia I can upload short files, for example? Or should I put this in an appendix (if so, can you point me to an article which does something similar so I can see how it's done)?

Hello there. My sincere apologies if I'm in the wrong section for this; it's my first time making a request for something like this.

I would like to request the creation of a graphical chronological timeline be created for the TV show history of the 'List of WWE television programming' page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WWE_television_programming).

I am referring to the kind of timeline you usually see for members of a band (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Fleetwood_Mac_members#Timeline). There is an article Strategic human resource planning which contains the sub heading "Strategic human resource management", however managerial science connotes that Management is a bigger term than Planning and ideally Strategic Human Resource Management should be the heading and Strategic Human Resource Planning should be a sub component of it. It was my understanding that a brief summary with a link to the Main (or all of them) would be appropriate, but this has been disputed by another editor who has contributed substantially to the other three articles. I got my edit reverted when I tried to publish a new article over an existing redirect. My contact with the other editor is not as productive as I would have wished and is starting to escalate. As I understand it, there should still be some link from Foliate, even if I publish under a different (bracketed) title. I implemented what I thought was the right solution, but he keeps complaining about existing links where people would then have to click through instead of being forwarded immediately. I am looking for a viable solution. If you go to the analysis page of a talk page, eg., Xtools for the Dashboard, then it tells you the number of talk page watchers. Is there a way to see a list of those watchers? How can we add a decent main photo of Alice Faye? These old movie stills can be used by anyone but to add a photo you ask for who owns the copyright, who photographed it, etc. What do people say who put on the images that are there? Help with scale on Template::Graph::Chart

Hi. I've added some charts to COVID-19_pandemic_in_Wisconsin#Statistics_by_county (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views). These are my first charts, and this template is working nicely, except for scales on some of the Y axes. If for example you look at "New Cases Reported in Adams County", it shows 0 five times and 1 six times. It's not a huge deal, but it bugs me. The answer dawned on me this morning: the excess ticks on the y-axis occur when the max value is 1 or 2, so for graphs with small maxes, set yAxisMax=10. That solves the problem with the y-axis, and makes the chart suggest small numbers better. Advice on resolving edit war

We do not want to engage in an editing war, and do not wish to remove any information the other editor has made. Pages with same title but different case need collapsing into one

There are two pages purporting to cover Exterior Gateway Protocols https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exterior_gateway_protocol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exterior_Gateway_Protocol Both are short. The lower case version is almost vestigial and has no citations. I feel the lower case version should be removed and just the upper case one left. As the hatnotes at top say (maybe not clearly enough?), Exterior gateway protocol is about the general concept of exterior gateway protocols while Exterior Gateway Protocol is about a specific exterior gateway protocol with the name "Exterior Gateway Protocol". Pamuji Slamet, your question is about an article in Indonesian-language Wikipedia. The way things are done there may be different from the way they're done here in English-language Wikipedia. (Here, editors are strongly discouraged from editing articles about themselves.) At the top of the page, it reads "The Creation Museum, located in Petersburg, Kentucky, United States, is operated by the Christian creation apologetics organization Answers in Genesis (AiG). The Word "pseudoscientific" is a matter of personal opinion, not a fact. It should be removed.

Good news: you can be that editor! Be forewarned, though, that an article on this person will be evaluated for notability, which has a different meaning on Wikipedia than it does in normal English usage. Need help on the Radical centrism article

Dear Help Page, re: Radical centrism (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)- As I'm sure you know, WP:CITEVAR instructs editors to not change the established citation style of articles. The Radical centrism article has maintained a consistent and established citation style since 2013. On June 2 and again on June 4, an editor (Treybien) changed the citation style of a minority of the article's 229 cites. No explanation was given.

I have tried to revert the changes, with appropriate explanation on the history page, but intermediate and subsequent edits have made it impossible for me to do so successfully. On the article's Talk page, I asked Treybien to revert, but he has not responded.

Therefore, this is to request that you roll back the edits posted on June 2, 3, and 4 of the Radical centrism article. They are all of a piece, as you will see – for example, several people corrected spelling errors in Treybien's edits. Another editor, who apparently did not read or heed the notes I posted on the history page, re-entered his edits to Treybien's edits on 12 June.

There is no content dispute here. I simply want one of WP's clearly stated rules to be enforced. I have contributed to this article since 2012, when it was a hodgepodge; please do not let it become so again! Sincerely, - Babel41 (talk) 04:39, 13 June 2020 (UTC)

I've made several revision attempts to remove bias and opinion from the article, including citations that are links to opinion pieces which themselves make uncited claims, rather than the source material.

This page is contentious as it's a target for those opposed to meat eating. One of the reversions actually says it's intended to attack the diet:

That's not informative - it's vandalism.

The disputed parts are straw man arguments which claim proponents of the health program are making assertions which they clearly not, and no citations of quotations of original sources are being produced to support those allegations.

You seem to have missed Parkes NSW with population just under 15000 on list of towns with population more than 10000 I will try to edit it I am a bit keen to see a list of all named towns in NSW on ABS criteria with populations for 2011 and 2016, because we are losing so many people out of these small towns. Fact check 1: When Dr. Nzeribe came back from England, he did not have money to build any of the establishments that Wikipedia or whoever wrote this article gave him credit for. He was a graduate student who came home with a title only. Chief Martin Ohanenye (as a prosperous member of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee [UUSC])spearheaded the funding of these establishments and donated 3,000 pounds in 1958 in one swoop from his own personal funds in 1958 when Nigeria was still using British currency. Chief Ohanenye made other similar donations when funds were dry for the project. He was an affluent and a philanthropic businessman who wanted Awo-Omamma developed into a thriving town. Because these projects were in his own hometown and because of his title, Dr. Nzeribe claimed credit for the development, a point of contention. Dr. Nzeribe was the face that contractors, news media, and government officials saw.

Fact check 2: After Dr. Nzeribe failed to give credit to Chief Martin Ohanenye in 1958 (by making people think that he brought the money for the projects), Chief Martin Ohanenye decided to focus his developmental efforts in Ubogwu in Awo-Omamma, his own hometown. Hence, he commissioned the building of Saint Mary Primary School in Ubogwu and many other institutions.

Fact Check 3: Chief Martin Ohanenye single-handedly brought electricity into Ubogwu from the Owerri-Onitsha road powerline so that anyone who wanted could pull power from the main supply into their own home.

These are well-known facts as opposed to the biased article presented in Cornell Alumni News in 1969.

Please verify this information from any Awo-Omamma person who was alive around that time. There is Mr. Felix Okanome who lives in California. Others who awarded my father this plaque last year (July 27, 2019) are aware of the facts I stated about Chief Martin Ohanenye's philanthropic deeds to Awo-Omamma and Nigeria.

If it is deficient in some other way it would also be useful to know what more could be done to make it acceptable for publication. Thanks to you both for all your help to get this published: much appreciated. I shall try to cite the references today. The article was written by a man called John Fletcher. I was employed by him last month to try to get it published and did a lot of work on improving the language, punctuation, etc. and bringing the references more into line with Wikipedia requirements. I then copied and pasted my final Word version of the file. It included an illustration of the stag's antlers which I thought added something but this now appears to have gone missing; can someone please advise how to add this? Many thanks. Issues with an editor's conduct

Hi, An editor seems to me to be edit warring on this article and to be consistently ignoring and misusing Wikipedia policies to do so. This is particularly an issue as the article is a WP:BLP and much of the content misrepresents tendentiously what are themselves poor and tendentious sources, making this article arguably definable as WP:ATTACK. I have looked through dispute resolution but think only sanctions would have any effect. Could you suggest my best course of action?

The editor:

  • repeatedly deletes material in breach of WP:BLPSELFPUB [9] [10] [11]
  • repeatedly reverts edits and multiple edits completely instead of in part, in breach of WP:REVONLY [12] [13] [14]
  • repeatedly uses edit summaries which are minimal, partial and vague, in breach of WP:SUMMARYNO and WP:REVEXP [15] [16] [17]
  • deletes the link to the official subject website twice in breach of WP:ELYES and WP:OFFICIAL without explanation, then argues for its exclusion on the basis that the subject website is “problematic” in some unstated way, despite it having been in the article for 12 years [18] [19] [20]
  • misrepresents another editor’s edit on the talk page, by presenting an addition as a substitution, in breach of WP:TALKNO [21] The actual edit is [22]
  • makes a personal attack on a talk page “(My) framing in the leadoff of Irving as a "historical author", in the face of sourcing, is troubling.” in breach of WP:TALKNO [23]
  • uses an edit summary on a talk page to make a snide comment in breach of WP:ESDONTS [24]
  • misuses Wikipedia policies by using them selectively e.g. uses WP:WEIGHT while ignoring WP:BLPSELFPUB
  • uses WP:MANDY inappropriately when this is not a Wikipedia policy and to oppose including a response from the subject to a reported phrase taken out of context and based solely on the word of one anonymous person parlayed via a hostile lobby group mounting a campaign [25]
  • proposes that my edits should require pre-approval from other editors in breach of WP:EPTALK and WP:OWN, referring to “our article” [26]
  • bans me from his talk page after the first message I sent him on conduct, in breach of WP:CONDUCTDISPUTE [27] [28] [29]
  • systematically misrepresents pretty much everything (examples above).

This is a content dispute, and I eagerly invite editors to join the discussion at Talk:Gilad Atzmon#Non-neutral edits, Irving as an "historical author". Jontel's edits, back in May 2020, were rejected by consensus of multiple editors. Jontel, for edit warring against multiple editors, was sanctioned with an instruction not to edit the article for a month (until 13 June). Despite being allowed to use talk, Jontel did not utilize this possibility to build consensus. I reverted these edits with a clear edit summary. Instead of following WP:BRD and opening a discussion on the talk page, it appears Jontel has seen fit to complain elsewhere. I have opened a discussion on the relevant talk page in order to elicit opinion from further editors on these latest edits. Edit Discussion (possible dispute) in John Hagee

This is in the early stages of a possible dispute involving an edit I made to John Hagee. I documented his participation in a campaign rally in 1968 held for George Wallace. The only thing so far is one user undid my edit. I explained that the source is verifiable (and it is the primary source of news in the area, dated August 1968, a newspaper article). The editor User_talk:Aroma_Stylish additionally said in the undo remark the claim was WP:Exceptional, so required more of a burden of proof. I was just wondering, how does one resolve a situation like this all with the assumption that the information is verified and it is not exceptional? Perhaps give me some guidelines on what is exceptional (it seems like that is a loose concept that is not easy to pin down) I certainly will not undo anything, I feel it is just a meaningless gesture to have an editing war. So, I want to know, how should I proceed when this happens (my edit is removed for being exceptional when I feel it is not exceptional), one, and two, how do I proceed in this particular case. As you say, this text is not on a Wikipedia page. If it shows up in a search engine's result, it suggests that the search engine has been subverted in some way. For future reference, if you're referring to those boxes at the side of the search results, there is usually a discreet Feedback link at the bottom right of the panel (see image right) where you can tell the people responsible that something is wrong, and hopefully that someone would get around to fixing it quickly. Those results usually come from a cached copy of Wikipedia, which means that it only gets updated when the search engine bot decides to look at our page again, so if it happens to be unlucky and catch a vandalised copy... "Kamala Harris" Page - Dispute Over Proposed "Attendance" Section

I am requesting editor assistance to gain advice in how to handle a dispute on the "Kamala Harris" Wikipedia page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamala_Harris

I have already discussed my concerns in the "Talk" page of "Kamala Harris." I do not want to get into an "edit war."

This is an important matter because Senator Kamala Harris apparently is being considered seriously as a vice presidential nominee.

A basic statistic of performance of a member of Congress is "voting participation," the percentage of roll call votes that a member participated in over a given time period. "Congressional Quarterly" apparently has compiled this statistic for every member of Congress since the 1940s. "Congressional Quarterly" (or "CQ") is a subscription service. Its reports are found in reference sections of many public libraries, but I cannot access those books right now due to the COVID-19 library closures. Other institutions, including GovTrack.us, compile this statistic, too.

I created an "Attendance" section that cited the GovTrack.us of Senator Kamala Harris's "voting participation" or "missed votes." It concluded that she has missed 23 percent of all roll call votes during her tenure in the U.S. Senate and found that she is an outlier -- she has missed significantly more votes than the median senator now serving. She has missed nearly one-quarter of roll call votes during her Senate tenure.

However, another editor removed my "Attendance" section completely and claimed that since reliable news sources have not made "attendance" of Kamala Harris an issue, it is not appropriate for inclusion in a Wikipedia article. I disagree, as I've stated in the "Talk" section. "Voting Participation"/"missed votes" is a standard, objective benchmark. It's of secondary relevance why she missed so many votes.

I find it extremely ridiculous that a "voting participation"/"missed votes" statistic, a benchmark used to measure performance of all members of Congress for more than 70 years, cannot be discussed in a Wikipedia article about a member of Congress.

The wording of your edit isn't the same as how you describe your statement here. You can include statistics information from primary sources (not familiar with Congressional vote sources, is there something official?). But the way you worded it sounds charged and not neutral. I think it can be included properly, but you'll need to be careful of WP:SYNTH while doing so. Perhaps a mention of her statistic, and a mention of the average, and this being lower than the average, and cut words like "poorest attendance" and "much worse", etc. That would fairly represent what the source is saying, imo. Prior to today, there was no information on the Robert Trivers Wikipedia page about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. I and Nomoskedasticity reverted this editor. As I said in my edit summary reverting you the first time, Lacks WP:RS. Don't cite blogs and definitely do not cite Twitter. As it says at WP:RS, Never use self-published sources as independent sources about living people, even if the author is an expert, well-known professional researcher, or writer. And regarding your drawing attention to posts on Trivers' blog, note this: Wikipedia articles should be based mainly on reliable secondary sources, i.e., a document or recording that relates or discusses information originally presented elsewhere. Selectively looking through WP:Primary sources for scandal, quoting the bad things Trivers said in the past from his blog post, [30] and ignoring the purpose of the post, to defend himself, [31] is not appropriate under WP:BLP.

Disabled person reclaiming "crip"

Unsourced Iranian accomplishments?

I've just gone over Windcatcher; it formerly treated windcatchers as an Iranian invention copied by some other countries. The sources don't seem to support this, and it seems unlikely that something as simple as a windscoop would not be repeatedly reinvented in many widely-scattered places.

Ethnic slur in hatnote of article

I came across this article Saeed Orokzai in the dead-end log, tried to find better references for it, and instead got sucked into a bit of a swamp. The creating editor's talk page shows that they previously created an article by the same name, which (I think) was speedily deleted, as it was substantially the same as an earlier one deleted after AfD, which in turn was same as another article by a slightly different name (different rendering of the person's original Afghan name). @Doublegrazing:, at least one of the references, The BBC article, calls him "one of the leading directors of Afghan cinema" so CSD is probably inappropriate despite the re-creation. BLPPROD doesn't apply and it is appropriately tagged for improvement (for whatever the latter is worth). I suppose you could send it to AfD but I don't think it obviously fails the appropriate WP:N criteria. Yes, about 92% of Jamaicans are of African ancestry, and Kamala Harris's father Donald J. Harris, is of largely African ancestry. Is this a valid source?

The reliability of the source isn't in question. The problem is that I cannot access it to verify, even using multiple different browsers. The source is a podcast from 2012 [32] and while I'm able to access the webpage, I can't get the podcast to actually play, even using multiple different browsers. I think the podcast may no longer be listenable (if that's even a word) and thus probably shouldn't be used. Can someone else check and see if this podcast can still be listened to? Most Serbian television station articles specify "Serbia" or "Serbian" in the titles, such as TV Art (Serbia), Fox (Serbian TV channel), Kanal 9 (Serbia), Nickelodeon (Serbian TV channel), RTS2 (Serbian TV channel), etc. Given that, I'd say the most appropriate name would be something along the lines of "Pink (Serbian TV channel)", "Pink (Serbia)", or something similar. A nitpicking edit war.

Apparently some people are bothered by the text "X serves as Y" when X has just lost an election for another term as Y, but is still in office. It's a minor thing, but I'd appreciate it if people would express their opinions about it, as it applies to Lacy Clay. Apparently neither @AlsoWakai nor myself can accept that the other knows how to use the English language. Discussing this here instead of talk page cuz it seems an issue not limited to that one page, especially in an election year.

First, don't edit war, Isaac Rabinovitch and AlsoWukai. Now, to the issue at hand, my perspective is if Clay is still in office, it should say as "Lacy Clay serves in Congress" until the date in which he leaves the position and his successor takes office. At which point it should then be changed to "Lacy Clay served in Congress" or some other past tense phrasing. However, that exact phrasing is not used in the article. It states "William Lacy Clay Jr... who serves as the U.S. Representative... since 2001...". That "since 2001" changes my answer some because "serves" and "since 2001" aren't of the same tense. I would change it to "...who has served... since 2001..." for the reason of present perfect tense that AlsoWukai stated in one of their edit summaries. Reason 1 stated in the examples of that page's section "1) Actions started in the past and continuing in the present" addresses this scenario exactly. Here's some actual assistance for you as an editor: when an administrator such as Cullen328 tells you not to do something, take the warning seriously. Calling it "finger wagging" and publicly announcing your intention to ignore it is a great way to guarantee you will be blocked. Here's some more actual assistance: Don't edit-war, ever. If you "don't want to make an issue of that" than don't do it. It's a very simple operation to not click that little "Undo" link. Third bit of actual assistance: Use the friggin' talk page. Which, as has been mentioned above, is what you should have done at first and what you have yet to do despite being advised to do so multiple times. You asked for links about this so here are two: WP:BRD and WP:DR. Fail to take advantage of the assistance you've been offered here and you will almost certainly wind up blocked. You seem to be approaching Editor Assistance as if it means, "Assist me in getting my edits accepted." That's not how it works. Flightgear flight sim article - Unresolved RFC from 2016: consensus ignored for years

Hello from a very new editor!

In the Flightgear:talk page there appears to be an RFC related to an editor from a closed-source windows gaming software background, citing WP:GAMECRUFT which is not relevant to something whose goals aren't entertainment - for example there is no equivalent of a plot, setting, or story line, there is no winning or completing, and no game design, any of which could likely be a section in a game article. This editor removed a bunch of content related to the research & development oriented opensource simulator used a lot by the Linux community. The RFC asked for a restore but this hasn't happened.

In addition I'll add some further comments about 2 edits by that user:

Case 1 In this edit some information on distribution of source and binary packages was removed particularly relevant to Linux, Mac - but not so much Widnows. It's also relevant to people looking to modify source to extend FG for their own projects, and fix special case bugs they encounter.

Among other things, in Linux, a 'normal' way to use software is download the source and compile - among other things, this allows applications to be compiled in the native CPU Micro-architecture taking advantages of capabilities and working around quirks. For closed source software on Windows, the normal way of distibuting software is via compiled binary executables that are distibuted in installers or archives - these binaries are compiled for the lowest common denominator CPU features at the cost of performance. Each Linux distribution maintains it's own repositories of software and dependiencies. There are Package management systems to automatically install and buld software and their dependencies - tools like APT_(software) (Linux). Each distribution has it's own policy of which versions of software they store, the update frequency they use, and update delay to convert into the package management system's format. Packages are managed by volunteers so there may be a delay during which time people wanting the newest versions should compile. These days there is also a download and compile script for Flightgear that can make compiling easier for Linux users. Additionally, Flightgear has multiple releases: (unstable) nightly build releases with latest features, and fairly stable development builds released a few times per year. These days there are also long term stable builds for which bug fixes are backported. The result is: the exact version in the Linux or Mac package managers, and it's recency matters if users want to sample recent features.

This is basic information useful for Linux/Max users.

While the wording of that section of the article could be a bit less technical for the benefit of Windows readers - it at least gives the information directly. It shouldn't have been reverted.

The problem is a Windows user focused on Games wouldn't necessarily know about the topic. An editor only looking for closed source Windows software for entertainment from WP:Games wouldn't frequently have a use case for modifying Flightgear to link to their hardware/software industry projects and fixing special case bugs.

Case 2 In this edit he removed part of the content in a casually written section on scammers charging for Flightgear was removed - without an attempt to improve by finding sources and fixing the tone - see the talk page discussion. The person removing didn't really have a clue about the Flightgear, the common unethical reselling of opensource software by 3rd parties without contributing back, as he wasn't even able to determine the notableness. That is, he didn't have the situational awareness / knowledge to make a judgement on whether to even decide there would be sources - a lack of unfamiliarity he should have been expected to be acutely aware of when acting in good faith. If he had searched he could easily have sourced this article from 2012. Since then there's has been this from 2018.

The 2012 RPS article should have been sourced to help refactor and improve the old content into something with a neutral perspective like this attempt at a first draft.

An additional point: The Flightgear article is classified under WP:Games ..this might have to be fixed as well? What is a more suitable project? Maybe it would help to put up a notice outlining that P:Games contributions guidelines are only relevant as far as things applicable to all articles like formatting.


Looking at the history, there doesn't appear to have been much actual content added since the RFC (2016) as far as I can see by edit comments - most of the additions are peripheral stuff or maintenance about sources,version numbers, and other trivia. As a result there doesn't seem to have been much improvement in content.

I'm new to wikipedia editing, and using talk pages which don't appear to have the visual editor making it awkward for newer contributors to get involved. Not sure what to do to resolve this RFC and move things forward. I looked at the article in september 2019, and the RFC was several years old. I also added a talk page comment to an old discussion (the RFC was closed) pointing out Flightgear wasn't a game, it's goals were different, and game guidelines were not relevant. Nothing has changed since September 2019.

It would be nice to get the RFC completed and over with - so I can proceed with adding some content I wrote in a separate sandbox page September 2019, about the project with respect to it's goals as a "framework for use in research or academic environments, pilot training, as an industry engineering tool..".

@Ssvv7:, I have a few points to hopefully move this along:
  1. Please in the future summarize requests such as this concisely. The longer a request for assistance is, the less likely it is to be responded to.
  2. The links for your diffs were malformed. Both of the ones you linked appear to more properly be this.
  3. The only RfC on that article's talkpage is this one that was very clearly resolved. It was closed with a clear consensus and that question is answered.
  4. The RfC and the edit you linked to have nothing to do with each other. The RfC was specifically asking about a series of edits in 2016 and has no bearing on more-recent edits. Such RfC's are not precedent-setting except to the extent that re-deleting the material that was restored would be wrong. They don't mean that other material is protected from deletion.
  5. This is a content dispute and really belongs on that article talk page.
  6. Stating Eik Corell is an "editor from a closed-source windows gaming software background" is casting aspersions about bad-faith motivations and such statements are sanctionable as personal attacks. Please do not do this in the future.

Hi! Ok, there are several different issues here. I was confused as this is my first article. I only looked September of last year and got confused - the RFCs, talk pages, edit histories, learning wiki syntax on talk pages etc are confusing for someone thinking of making a 1st contribution.
1. I take it the RFC at the bottom was resolved. I was confused as the RFC had comments by the editor like "I'm curious as to what specific sections should be restored. I mean as long we're not talking about [33]" about the commercial re-distrbution section which is still missing things - see point 3.
2. This section on "FlightGear code vs. binaries" was removed at some edit many years ago. It's no longer present on the main article. It shouldn't have been deleted. He said "Here .. is an example. For the first one, this is meaningless for the average reader and it's not something that is covered in normal video game articles. This is the technical mumbojumbo that I was talking about". F He said it was deleted without understanding how things worked in opensource Linux environments, and the various uses of Flightgear as it isn't a game, but an R&D tool etc. This is relevant information - at worst it should be explained more.
The situation: Flightgear has 3 branches with different standards of stability and cutting edge features that people want to try out. The section also contains information that is necessary for people on opensource Linux, where a normal way to get software is to compile from source - either from FG source code on gitgub/sourceforge, or using the packages for each Linux distro. This Package management system that will automatically get and compile all FG sources, and software libraries Flightgear dependends on. What of the 3 branches each Linux distro has, what delays there are based on volunteers creating packages, varies. Similarly Mac releases can be delayed sometimes. So the information about platforms being maintained by volunteers is also important. It would be preferable to not delete content, including the implications made by that content for users of a multi-platform sim, if an editor doesn't understand calling it "technical mumbojumbo" - because it can be many years later that the problem is rectified. It's "not something that is covered in normal video game articles" because video games are mainly closed source and distributed as executables even if they're on available Linux, and mainly developed and originate in Windows - and because Flightgear is not a game.
3. Part of This section on Commercial redistribution was removed at some edit many years ago before I got here. The parts relating to the scam reselling Flightgear - and scam behaviors like the scams lying, stealing media from other sims like FSX and calling it their sim. This info should not have been removed. The editor said: "The second one: .. unsourced accusations of lying facebook pages and coverage of irrelevant community bickering.". The editor should have done a basic google search and found sources instead of deleting - about the first result you get is for the RPS editorial - described in this draft which I wrote a day ago. As the 2012 RPS article says (about gaming simmers) "Most serious simmers are well aware of this scam.". The implication here is that simmers should also know about Flightgear. The editor should not have been so certain as to casually delete this info without trying to search for sources first, given he should be aware he didn't know much about simming even from a gaming PoV, and therefore researched the subject. Awareness of his lack of familiarity is doubly worse as he even had problems about Flightgear's notability going by the talk page. The consequence is that the problem wasn't fixed for many years.
The fix for this is to add a sources in a sub-section of Commercial re-distribution called "Criticism from media" - possibly along the lines of my draft which I've not tried adding yet.
4. I started work on a sandbox on adding some content to the article last year, and was mistakenly(?) waiting for the RFC finish, thinking the above and whatever else would be fixed. Thanks for the clarification.
The fix: I haven't tried adding this content to the article yet, but I will try sometime in the next few weeks depending on whether I write more - someone seems to have reviewed it in February and recommended inclusion.
5. I'm not sure the Flightgear article belongs under gaming - Flightgear doesn't have basic attributes of games like story/plot/setting/game design/soundtrack accompaniment to story. At least there should be some type of warning that gaming guidelines on deleting content should not apply - as there may be further people who specialise in gaming and may not have a general "editing sense" or "situational awareness". I use specialise as apparently the editor claimed he specialises in deleting WP:GAMECRUFT (?), and multiple people in the talk page pointed out the guidelines didn't apply to sims. As can be seen raising and addressing issues has the timescale of years, so deleting without situational awareness, and awareness of missing awareness, is a problem.
The fix: Not sure what should be done about that - classifying under something else, or putting a warning about being careful when deleting content a using gaming 'editing sense' when the article draws maintainers/deleters because the article is classified as a game?

Muhammad and the Bible Lead Change

I was discussing a proposal to change the lead for Muhammad and the Bible as the current one has an odd sentence structure which is seemingly leading into the Muslim perspective as being objective. The talk page is Introduction Change under Talk:Muhammad and the Bible.

@ChaoticTexan:, I apologize to you that this request for assistance has gone for four days without a reply. "Final verdicts" are a slippery thing here and generally only come as a result of the Arbitration process. That is a long, complex, and involved process that is a last resort in dispute resolution so I would strongly advise against it. It sounds like the Third Opinion process is a much better fit. Needing more eyes on a discussion is exactly what that process is designed for and all you have to do to join is sing it the next time it comes around on the guitar take advantage is follow the instructions at this link. Bad faith reversions

Hello, there is a problem in some articles and I need an admin help/advice.

According to MOS:SHOCKVALUE and MOS:LEADIMAGE, "lead images should be of least shock value; an alternative image that accurately represents the topic without shock value should always be preferred". So I swapped a lead image with female nudity with another lead image without nudity that brings the same context to the topic.

But there is an user who is reverting those edits just because he likes the old images more. So instead of following Lead Image guidelines, it seems that he will try some edit war to force his preference. The articles are Outline of BDSM, Master/slave (BDSM) and List of BDSM organizations. Someone updated the image with a completely new image, because they were concerned my previous version could trigger photosensitive epileptic seizures. I didn't see anything "seizurey" in my image when I uploaded and verified it. I found out checkered patterns could trigger PSE seizures (the checkered heart pattern on the wallpaper in the screenshot), but I don't think is is a usual PSE concern (flickering lights, which is a common PSE trigger, are usually concerned). Also Wikipedia:Content disclaimer says that Wikipedia holds media that can trigger PSE seizures of any cause. How should I deal with this? PrincessPandaWiki, I see that HunterProt has "updated" the image by replacing it by a completely different image with the same name. That's definitely wrong. If they think their image is preferable to the checkerboardy one for use in the article (you haven't told us which article), they should upload it as a new image, and then discuss the issue on the article's talk page. Help with Fanfiction.Net?

Someone did not like my cleanup of the article, which was done in the purpose of making the article more encyclopediac with less reliance on primary sources. When I tried to revert back to my cleanup, they revert back to their version, which is similar to how the article was before, with statistics of "most popular sections", "longest fanfiction" (I didn't like how they got rid of a longest fanfiction bit with reliable secondary sources), and information on disallowed fanfiction, which may be WP:FANCRUFT. Welllll... generally speaking, edits may be reverted per WP:BRD and then the ball is in your court to make your case -- which you are doing here, but should be done on the article talk page instead. Other editors watching the page will (hopefully) chime in and, and (after some back and forth probably) you'll maybe get consensus for the change, or maybe not. I would just copy your plaint above directly to the article talk page, as is.
If you're trying to recruit editors here to go over to that page and support your argument... mnmh I would rather that the first step would be to talk with people who are watching the page, they will know the subject better. If that doesn't work and you can't convince each other or find a compromise, I guess an RfC would then be in order. That'd be the way to go to get new unbiased eyes on the matter. (FWIW, for my part, it doesn't appear to me that your arguments are a slam dunk, except for the part about restoring the sourced longest-fanfiction bit. The article is not too long.
