Wellington Meetup 29 October 2022[edit]

  • Time: 10:00 am to midday
  • Location: He Matapihi Molesworth Library at National Library, corner Molesworth and Aitken Streets, Wellington
    Come to the main entrance of the National Library on Molesworth Street.
  • Bring a laptop if you have one. There are publicly available computers if you don't have a laptop.

Venue[edit]

The group meet at the He Matapihi Molesworth Library within the National Library. This is a Wellington City Council pop up public library. Mask wearing is encouraged. Drinks are permitted in the library.

1. Introduction to meet up by organisers (if there are any newbies joining us)

2. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on

  • Ambrosia10 reporting back on her Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand funded virtual attendance of TDWG2022. See full report here and draft GLAM Wiki Newsletter here. She has also been working on a new project with Te Papa having requested research access to their botanical collectors in their Collection Management System. Has been given a spreadsheet with the appropriate information and is currently disambiguating, making new items and linking the Te Papa id with the Wikidata item and vise vera. This spreadsheet will be returned to Te Papa when complete with the Wikidata items added to their collection management system. Hopefully this will ensure when they upload their data into GBIF it will be with "CollectedBy" and "IdentifiedBy" fields filled in so that this can automatically be ingested into Bionomia Tracker ensuring the rest of the world can take advantage of this disambiguation work. As she told the Aotearoa meetup she's one of her scholarly papers published on the disambiguation of names. She's also recently attended a meeting on the NZ Thesis project planning for it's next steps. A reminder that there is a google sheet giving articles to work through adding to the author article the theses names (see the links below). She's also been working mix'n'match, particularly biodiversity datasets and has been using the amazing new tool we added to lots of folks Wikidata commons js page last month. She's got a Museum of Berlin event coming up where she'll be helping disambiguate their collectors.
  • Noracrentiss - Has been working on the Wikidata mix’n’match Alexander Turnbull datasets. She's aiming to get to the top of leaderboard. She explained that this editing often leads her to improving Wikipedia articles.
  • MulletPoint, a friend of Noracrentiss, attended wanting to be introduced to Wikipedia. She's a writer experienced in researching and writing biographies on women and Māori and is keen to learn how to edit Wikipedia. Giantflightlessbirds tutored her in setting up an account, how to add content to the article on Rosalie Gascoigne, and how to reference the same.
  • AtticEdit - Has been organising the Home of Compassion editathon Ada Lovelace STEM editathon. Working on an article for the well know British screenwriter Georgia Pritchett. Also wanted advice on the Suzanne Aubert article as references needed improvement and how to get images for people to put in Wikipedia articles. There was a discussion about her conflict of interest with Suzanne Aubert, given her connection to the Home of Compassion, but Giantflightlessbirds advised that her editing that article should be OK so long as she was transparent about it in her talk page.
  • Stitchbird2 - she's continuing to work on species pages/subspecies of NZ forget-me-nots. At the Ada Lovelace day editathon she worked on a person article for the first time and really enjoyed it can is planning to do more pages of women scientists. She's been working on the Geoff Baylis page as this needs work. Has just today successfully gone through the process of getting images from third parties into WikiCommons with email permission to the Wikimedia foundation!
  • Giantflightlessbirds - Reported back on his month away overseas investigating Wiki organisations. Currently working on the Blanche Baughan corpus. She wrote quite a few books he's getting scanned and into Wikisource for folk to work on, as part of the West Coast Task Force. He's also got a West Coast edit-a-thon coming up on 26 Nov focussed on the potter and teacher Yvonne Rust - see the events section. Unfortunately it clashes with the next Wellington meetup, but runs until 4pm.

3. Progress on Action Points and future events

Don't forget to add your program to the Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years.   • New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10 - update given as at last meeting. Explained the next focus will be further documentation of DrThneed workflow as well as writing blogs and library journal article explaining about the project to a wider audience.
  • 2022 August 11-14 Wikimania 2022 - any update from attendee? Giantflightlessbirds gave an update about presenting at Wikimania and suggested folk plan to attend Wikimania 2023.
  • West Coast Editathon—Yvonne Rust, 26 November 2022: attend in-person or remotely, to improve coverage of this West Coast artist/teacher and her circle.
  • 2022 October 8 Ada Lovelace Editathon, Wellington Pakoire, Ambrosia10, AtticEdit organisers. Update on outcome of event.
  • 2023 February The Postponed Wellington WikiCon Tentatively rescheduled for February 2023. Who will be the main organiser? - AtticEdit will take the lead in organising the conference and get support from other editors.
  • Visit to Parliamentary Librarians Any update from Pakoire?

5. Wikicon Wellington Discussion - AtticEdit will take the lead in organising the conference and get support from other editors.

Audience Group agreed that the Wikicon in February is for editors that have some experience. Newbies should be encouraged to attend a training session that could be run a week or fortnight prior. This information should be included in the promotional material.

Duration Group agreed that the Wikicon should be over two days and should start later on the Saturday to ensure those that arrive by flights in the morning have time to get to the location.

Presentation ideas Group brainstormed options for the programme.

  • Manager of Otari Wilton’s Bush could be invited to talk about 3 to 5 of their selected rare plants and then take the group into the bush to show them the specimens.
  • DrThneed could be invited to talk about the Thesis project
  • Ambrosia10 could be invited to talk about iNaturalist workflows, image importing, round tipping of Wikipedia articles.
  • Avocadobabygirl could be invited to talk about Te Papa’s Wikimedia Commons project. Stitchbird2 has offered to present with her or alternative have her own presentation on her species work.
  • Beeswaxcandle or Giantflightlessbirds could be invited to deliver a Wikisource tutorial
  • Project lead for Te Papa’s Spencer Digby Ronald D. Woolf project could be invited to present on how a digitisation project works and show what resources are available for the community to use.
  • An editor could be invited to discuss how to get books into Wikidata and how to use Cite-Q
  • How many newish editors will attend? Do we need a general introduction to all Wikimedia Foundation projects? Ambrosia10 has a presentation that was delivered to the Auckland Wikicon last year.

Support for Presenters. Group agreed that the Wikicon funding should include paying for the travel and accommodation of speakers.
