Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference[edit]

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on[edit]

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Update from President - Committee has been working on

Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2022
Ada Lovelace Day Edit-a-thon Wellington 2022
Don't forget to add your program to the Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page.
  • New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this. Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10. Update by DrThneed on her presentation to Australian editor meeting?
DrThneed has been working on copyright statements, whether thesis is digitised or not etc and in discussions on how to interpret data in the database. Sometimes physically available in library sometimes digitally available. On Wednesday she attended the Australia Wikimedia meeting. Had a lovely reception to her presentation. Folk are interested in getting Aussies involved in getting theses to Wikidata. She's done reconciliation to people to NZ institution but haven’t looked at Aussie institutions . She’s having another go with more unusual author names.
The event was extremely successful with 10 physical attendees and 3 contributing remotely. The Home of Compassion was a fabulous venue and User:Ambrosia10 would highly recommend adding this venue for potential editathons and Wiki events in the future. The room (which the organisers are extremely grateful to say was donated to the event by the Home of Compassion) was definitely large enough and suited our needs well. A email message of thanks has been sent by User:Ambrosia10 with her CCing the president and the secretary of Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand. As regards the COVID mitigation actions, there were a couple of comments by attendees pleased at the CO₂ meter was available and showed low CO₂ readings, attendees were happy to use masks and to sit outside for lunch. The catering was well received. As regards outcomes and work completed during the editathon see the Edit-a-thon page as well as the Dashboard for the event. We welcomed two new editors to Wikipedia Paisleyapples and Lipstikpunch both of whom were quickly and successfully editing Wikipedia within a short time of arriving at the event. At least 6 new articles were created during the event (this does not count the stubs created by AtticEdit in anticipation of the editathon allowing new editors to work on articles), many more existing articles were improved, particularly Ruth Mason which Stitchbird2 took from a stub to a C class article, Avocadobabygirl creating an article on essa may ranapiri and Gertrude206 created articles on Charlotte Paul and Karen Grylls. Many new Wikidata items were created, particularly for scholarly works written by authors whose Wikipedia pages were being worked on during the editathon and other Wikidata items were improved or linked to. In total the event added 144K words to articles and items, 173 references and one image was uploaded to WikiCommons. More images of women covered in newly created articles were added or planned to be added to Wikicommons after the event. If you took images during the event could you upload them to Wikicommons and add the Category "Edit-a-thons in New Zealand". If there are enough images I'll create a new category for the event. - Ambrosia10 (talk)
Discussion about both conferences - Pakoire going to WOW and ESACP conferences and will present on her NZ Performance project. Beeswaxcandle, Giantflightessbirds and Stitchbird2 are also attending with Beeswaxcandle also getting approval for his Wikisource workshop to go ahead. Discussion online is about what waiata to perform. Told to represent. Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight will also be present.
  • 2023 February WikiCon Wellington
Discussion about the Wellington Wiki community having a capacity issue currently and is having difficulty finding someone with the time or energy to organise this conference. Many of the editors in Wellington are either on the committee while at the same time holding down full time jogs or are currently over committed with their volunteering as well as other wiki work. As a result organising this conference is currently seen as a real challenge. Attendees were were asked for ideas on how to solve this issue. Giantflightessbirds, after his recent travel, is keen to have an employee for Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand to be responsible for organising conferences and assisting with editathons. However in the short term this is unlikely to resolve this problem. A discussion amongst the group regarding this issue ensured but with no clear resolution.
  • Other suggestions for themes around events include Library Week, Conservation Week, International Volunteers Day, 24hr editathon for Ada Lovelace Day, WikiSource Women's History Month for Wikisource, Winter Olympics, Matariki Event, Library Week. We should think about the focus of the work - is it to onboard folk or to focus on content. Any further update?
Anything to update / discuss?
  • Checking in on who attended in person the Ada Lovelace Day in Wellington. Any feedback on what could have been done better or things folk particularly enjoyed about the event for future event organisers?

3. Wiki News – add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of

Giantflightessbirds gave a summary of meeting explaining that it had a Wikimania 2023 discussion. As well as a discussion about issues with visas. Encouraged folk to consider attending as not that far away July/August 2023. Presentation by Swedish wiki folks about helping GLAM institutions to upload to WikiCommons. Help desk is to be set up to connect wikipedians with those institutions. The meeting also gave information on the Leadership development working group.
  • Internet New Zealand has a new funding round that has opened. If you have a conference you want to attend or project that needs funding it is worth applying.
  • Prosperosity to update us on his work as a Wikipedian in Residence at Auckland Museum, and talk about templates for suburb pages. He explained the background to the editing ie new New Zealand hisotry curriculum and showed us his template which can be found here. He used the template on a good article and as result made adjustments to it but is very happy with it now. He also mentioned that the Auckland Museum grant application and encouraged editors to consider it. See the grant application link. Time frame for learning whether the grant was successful will be around November. There was a discussion around editors working on suburbs in their local area or city. This then went on to raise reserves/national parks coverage and how these locations might also be improved. Editors pointed out there had been a discussion about the best way to format National Park wikipedia pages on the WikiProject NZ talk page. Prosperosity has also been going through the wikipedia pages which have the category Endemic species and is checking for images either sourced from iNaturalist or from Auckland Museum improving the articles.

4. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated – You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

  • DrThneed - working on NZ Thesis Project, as above.
  • Gertrude206 - attended Ada Lovelace Day editathon and created two new articles on Charlotte Paul and Karen Grylls.
  • Paora has been creating new articles on notable women including Dorothea Horsman, a women's rights advocate and president of National Council of Women, as well as Eunice Eichler, a midwife in Auckland many decades and campaigner for open adoptions in 70s, and Mary Ogg, a former mayor of Gore who died recently. He's also been doing "Wiki gardening".
  • Oronsay - Giving some assistance on the NZ thesis project, also trying to find Aussie blokes who've just received fellowships for an upcoming Wikidata editathon. Looking to see how easy they are to find. Heaps of men named Mark Stevenson or Bruce Taylor for example, her's are all professors so she's been able to find them via their university profile page and orcid id - searching Wikidata for orcid id gets the correct person. Disambiguation rules! Also doing Wiki gardening, creating new articles and was trying to do one a day and then fell in heap after about 8 days. Looking forward to WOW but not quite sure what she’s doing - put on to a table on Friday pm and needs to get clarification! Also working on constraint violations. She's been using a gadget called the Identifier input gadget and its issues with LinkedIn. The tool strips out URL & just loads the identifier but doesn’t work properly with LinkedIn. Resulted in a discussion about the gadget and suggestions about contacting its developer to attempt to solve the issue. Giantflightessbirds had met the developer and said he would make contact if Oronsay or DrThneed could email him explaining the exact issue they were having with an example.
  • Beeswaxcandle Amazing news that as we were speaking he finished the final necessary editings in Wikisource completing his music encyclopaedia project!!! Lots of handclaps and virtual pats on back in celebration! He also explained he had finished his "Banking under difficulty" Libravox recording and will be posting links on Wikisource and will let the group know once it's gone through the review process so anyone who wants to tell libraries can.
  • Pakoire has obtained funding to go to and is looking forward to meeting everyone in person at the WOW conference. She's pleased she'll be presenting at beginning so she can enjoy the rest of the conference. The Pacific arts awards were last week and so she's been updating Wikipedia as a result.
  • Prosperosity As well as suburb work in Wikipedia he's been organising Wikicommons and has been being go through all endemic species pages of NZ attempting to get them images. Getting photos via iNat, and Auckland Museum. In Auckland Museum News - a new employee the online collections data analyst specialising a lot of Wikipedia stuff has been hired and has just started. Ambrosia10 suggested they work on round tripping Wikidata items into their collection management system.
  • Giantflightessbirds - Been back 2 weeks. Had a really good time overseas. Caught cold but not COVID. Attended online event / editathon birding editathon that came about as a result of Black birders and wanting to develop a diverse editing community in Wikipedia. In his view the event could have been organised/run better. Only 3 hours long, 1 hr was speeches, attempting to train newbies in one hour, and making new articles in one hour. Was in his view not as successful as it could have been. He participated in the Ada Lovelace Day editathon and spent his time attempting to get some women professors to submit photos to put in articles. He suggested the only way to do this in bulk is to work with institution marketing people. Potential to get 100s of useful images if get marketing involved.
For his overseas trip he is in the process of drafting a comprehensive report which he will share with the community when it is complete. In summary he attended a Wikimedia summit in Berlin, an all European GLAM week in Netherlands, and had a week in Stockholm with the wikifolk there. His key take away was that we need 3 - 5 full time staff members here in NZ as well funding of several 100,000s a year for our size. Said this was normal in Europe. Volunteers are organising two day conferences here in NZ and no one would attempt to do that in Europe. Given the capacity issue raised by Ambrosia10 he is firmly of the issue we should have paid staff to do this organisation work as well as do such things as outreach in schools etc. Sobering to see the money given to European chapters which are only 4 - 5x the size of us. Funds have been going to the northern hemisphere and there is a 20 year backlog in New Zealand where there has been no funding or support. Full time admin staff is the next step for us.
This raised a discussion about how Australia only recently obtained an Executive officer (March 2021) and Oronsay went on to explain one of the immediate benefits was standardising efforts/communications and outreach. There is now a new woman in role. More discussion about this continued.
  • David Nind - said he hasn't done much since last meeting but has been contributing to Wikisource.
  • Ambrosia10 - Had her paper published! Also Ada Lovelace Day editathon, Paleontology Wikidata workshop report back (see below), WeDigBio event and workflow, and TDWG conference coming up next week. Mix'n'match work particularly the Alexander Turnbull Library datasets, BHL and Harvard Index of botanists. Started a new project as I have received researcher approval and have been granted wider access to data in the Te Papa CMS in order to disambiguate botanical collectors. This will be a slow process as many are not in Wikidata and will require the manual creation of Wikidata items. Understandably (because of privacy reasons) although I have access to more data for the purpose of disambiguation I am unable to reuse those data that are NOT publicly available on Collections Online in Wikidata unless I can find it from an independent public source. Excited to start chipping away at this dataset.
Just reporting back to the group about the two day Paleo workshop I attended on Using Wikidata to capture and share information about paleontological collecting sites. I treated my role as that of a conduit between the Paleo community and Wikidata editors. Daniel Mietchen also attended the first day and others in the group were also Wikidata editors. This workshop followed on from one I attended in March called Using Wikidata to capture and share information about people in paleontology The group were pleased with and agreed with how to model a research expedition. I had a wonderful afternoon creating an exemplar item for them about the Harriman Alaska Expedition. I eventually got this up to a standard where I though it could be used as a model item for a scientific expedition. I explained although I've done some linking to literature generated via this expedition through the use of the main subject property, this will be a work in progress. I also explained that expedition participants could be linked to their publications Wikidata via the author item. The more challenging part of the workshop and where the group spent most of their time considering and discussing various issues, was how they thought a palenotological site should be modelled in Wikidata. This included discussions what properties should be used and what properties might need to be proposed to ensure a site was described appropriately for this community's needs. This was interested and challenging as my lack of knowledge about paleontology and geology was butting up against some of the participants lack of knowledge about Wikidata. I also recognised that some participants were still improving their understanding of a linked open knowledge graph as opposed to a collection management system. I spent time emphasising that the linking of the data was of utmost importance and that not all data had to placed on a particular item. All in all, I think it was a very productive meeting and I understand that the group is intending to discuss issues raised in the workshop further and are intending to work more on a data model for paleontological sites. It may be that the group decides to use Wikibase in order to test out their proposed model or even to create their own wikibase for sites as there is some concern over whether some sites should be made public given the risk bad actors destroying the same. All in all it was well worth getting up at 5am to attend! It also inspired more progress a Wikidata property proposal by another of the workshop participants. See here.

5. Review of questions raised during round table

  • Ambrosia10 asked Prosperosity about Auckland Museum BHL work and was excited to learn they are attempting to work out if they own copyright to the Powell mollesque book. Keen to add it to Wikisource, images to Wikicommons and to reuse the text in Wikipedia articles. Ambrosia10 pointed out that text from the book had previously been deleted from articles as a result of plagiarism concerns.
  • Prosperosity raised the idea of having a page or subpage for group ideas for projects. Things to list editathon ideas or collaborative projects. Ambrosia10 suggested creating a subpage of the Aotearoa New Zealand meetup page to allow for this. This raised a discussion about the possibility of an Arts editathon to the run by Pakoire. Giantflightessbirds was keen to attend as he's intending to do a road trip and catch up with both Wellington and Auckland wikifolk in the next few weeks. Pakoire recommended that the suburb template be added to the Aotearoa New Zealand meetup page as a resource.
  • Oronsay explained she had been working on constraint violations in Wikidata and demo'd to the group how she obtained the reports. Example given was ORCID id, go to Orcid id property, go to discussion page, and then scroll down to click on the constraint violation reports listed.

6. Further discussion

  • Discussion about deprecating or deleting identifiers in Wikidata and property P2241. Discussion touched on the Identifier input gadget and its issues within LinkedIn.
  • Discussion about new gadgets in Wikidata including the Author Name String gadget as shown in the Wellington Meetup on the 1 October.
  • Property creation discussion including recent proposals etc for Wikidata. The collection items at property proposal was discussed with DrThneed who suggested two properties might be needed or alternatively constraint violations should set up so the property is only used in the a more narrowly defined way.
  • DrThneed and Oronsay had an in depth discussion on the NZ thesis project on how best to help progress the project.

Outcomes[edit]

  • Add anything you worked on or learned during the meetup.
  • Organisation time - note taking by Ambrosia10 during the meeting 12hr . Transferring notes to meeting agenda and comms after completion = 1.5hrs.

Next meeting and Meetup timetables[edit]

  • 13 November 2022, same time, same place
