Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference[edit]

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on[edit]

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Anything to update / discuss?
  • Wikidata mix'n'match dataset This is the Commonwealth Graves dataset in Mix'n'match that needs working on. If folk could throw some time at this dataset say while watching TV I'd be really grateful as there is currently a big project on cemeteries that is using this type of data. See this link for the project. New Zealand is currently punching above its weight as users DrThneed, Canley, Tagishsimon and I spend some of February getting as many NZ cemeteries as we could into Wikidata. - Ambrosia10 (talk)
  • NDF Conference - postponed until 2022. The Aotearoa Usergroup has a 7 minute slot to present at NDF. If User:GiantFlightlessBirds attends this meeting could we discuss this presentation as a group? Ambrosia10 (talk) would like to open it up to the group for editors to give examples of work undertaken by members that might be covered in the presentation.

Notes:

  • National Digital Forum (NDF): Mike has agreed to present on behalf of the group at NDF (also postponed to 2022), a 7 minute slot (lightning talk), outlining some of the achievements of the user group to date. Will open up a Google Doc or Wiki page for suggestions, also can crib with the 2021 annual report (also update this please).
  • Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery data: There is a CWGC dataset in Mix'n'Match. Lots of cemeteries in New Zealand have already been done earlier in the year, but plenty of war grave cemeteries in the rest of the Commonwealth left to match.

3. Wiki News – add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of

  • WikidataCon was last weekend and was jam packed full of content. A great practical session that I'd highly recommend is Your favorite interface gadgets on Wikidata as it was a very quick presentation on extremely useful tools. But the whole conference was thought provoking. Most of the sessions were recorded, with the first day already being in Youtube. However other sessions will gradually be uploaded as the organising community manages to edit and upload it into Wikicommons. - Ambrosia10 (talk)
  • Session recordings are starting to go live on YouTube, lots of great stuff.

4. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated – You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

  • David Nind: not very much over the last month, adding Policy Quarterly journal articles to a Zotero library and tidying up the data, with the aim of adding to Wikidata.
  • DrThneed: attended WikiCon, lots of very interesting talks, looking forward to the videos being up (see list of sessions here). (I forgot to mention that we held a Dunedin meet up two weeks ago at Dunedin Central library, we have had to shift venue from the Hocken due to university Covid restrictions. We are going to try a cafe this coming week as we had connection problems in the library and were required to keep our masks on for the full three hours and social distance from each other, which was challenging! I also forgot to say I created a page for an OWG, Ian Town, as he is Chief Science Advisor for MBIE and therefore holds a fairly important role in NZ Covid response).
  • Canley – presenting at Wikimania and WikidataCon, working on cemeteries, MP lists and Govdirectory
  • Oronsay – won an Edna Award for Wikipedia work
  • Paora – Netball world championships, living knights missing pages, Gary Tricker (artist) and Mary Earle (food technologist) have died recently, updating or creating pages
  • Margaret – Filling in biota gaps, documenting how many Australian biota are missing articles and photos, linking IDs from Australian Faunal Directory.
  • Stuart – User patrol barnstar, using queries to find "unloved" pages (no talk page, supporting WikiProject), engaging with people at work about Wikidata, automatic citations for not current articles such as Soviet publishers with no modern metadata infrastructure or digital presence
  • Mike – Expanding Arthur's Pass (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur%27s_Pass), keeping an eye on new visitor centre; Wikisource work - 7 publications digitised, several copies have been loaned by the library; speaking at LIANZA conference about Wikisource for librarians; Wiki Science competition - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Science_New_Zealand_2021, please help with jury or promote to scientists or research organisations
  • Andrew – Working on Wikisource almost exclusively; 20 vols of Proceedings of the New Zealand institute now up
  • Siobhan – Updated every NZ micromoth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabatinca), most B or C class, Wikidata info, Commons categories, ingested into iNaturalist; larvae live on liverworts which are in bad shape on WP and WD; project on genera named after women; presented to Australasian Herbaria on how to use Wikidata and Bionomia Tracker; awarded a certificate at WikidataCon

5. Review of questions raised during round table

6. Further discussion

Outcomes[edit]

  • Add anything you worked on or learned during the meetup.
  • For Wikidata searching you can narrow down the results using statements after your query, for example for names to restrict to people: Jane Doe haswbstatement:P31
  • Checking links and adding Internet Archive references for all references in a Wikipedia article (rather than doing individually): add gadget MoreMenu (Your account > Preferences > Gadgets). Recommended approach is to check the links first (Page > Tools > Check external links), then fix dead links ((Page > Tools > Fix dead links).
  • Wikidata: browser addon Wwwyzzerdd can be used to improve Wikidata statements for a Wikipedia article. It highlights any links in the page, and tries to guess whether there is a statement in Wikidata. You can then add the statements (where appropriate) to Wikidata. Can now be turned on or off.
