Hi Daniel, My name is Meghan Murphy. I'm a reporter for the Times Herald Record (www.recordonline.com). I've long been interested in writing an article about someone who maintains and creates wikipedia articles and I've noticed that you've done quite a few in Montgomery, which is part of the beat that I cover. If you're interested in being the subject of this article and sharing your experience in documenting NYS history, please contact me at mmurphy@th-record.com Thanks! Meghan ```` (I apologize for the bad form of this post, obviously I don't wiki much)

Deletion of Learning-Education-Training Systems Interoperability (LETSI) Article, Oct 8, 2008[edit]

Hi, Daniel. You deleted an article this morning that I contributed to (LETSI), citing it as an advertisement. I'd like to get your recommendations on improving the article and reinstating it. LETSI is an international technical standards organization; I think it meets notability requirements. It's a regulatory standards body, nonprofit, and has no product to advertise. It should be a part of this constellation of articles: SCORM, Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), IMS Global, and Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee (AICC).

I have a cached version of the previous article content if you need a copy to refer to.

You can contact me directly via email: dyoung at teamscci.com, or you can leave a note on my talk page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Instrdesign

Thanks,

NPS NHL photo contest[edit]

Wow, volume 9 now. About the NPS NHL photo contest, i think you should only submit a couple pics, especially as you'll largely be competing against yourself in the Northeast region. Throw in a submission or two in another region if you can, looking up which states qualify in their rules.

The carousel photo is really very nice, although i wish the people in the pic would have been more animated, or if there woulda been more children and fewer adults prominent, when u look closely. I really know do the pic is nice, i have tried with another carousel, not yet posted, the one in Santa Barbara. And i first got to know Dudemanfellabra because he uploaded a pic about one in mississippi, and hten i went and edited other carousel articles. I can tell you handled several problems, framing it properly with two of the vertical bars on each side, and capturing the full panels above and going all the way down. Also you have the whole thing in focus, i am not sure with a fast exposure on a moving carousel or whether it was stationary. My cameras to date would not do that, and/or i wouldn't get in position, and/or parts would be blurred. I don't know when model release signatures get required, probably not for the people in your pic though. I don't know which of your pics i like best, it would be difficult to pick one. The Elephant House one sticks out in my mind for capturing the NHL so well with the statue or whatever plus the building behind, but maybe others of yours are more striking in an artsy way, like the past NPS NHL winner pics.

But the reason i am here, is to ask if you could fill out your photo credits in the right hand column of Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/PhotoCreditsForNHLsByState, ASAP. This is because I am trying to submit, tomorrow, a nomination of WP:NRHP as meriting a special award in the NPS NHL photo contest. As i mentioned to Dmadeo, they don't have any suitable category, but it is phenomenal that we have created almost all the NHL articles now and produced over 1500 pics, in fact probably over 2/3 the total of NHLs. I thot i might just make a submission, see if they choose to recognize us. To do this, I would really need a new tally of the number of pics we have, by state, and how many are new wikipedian-generated ones. I identified a bunch of yours already, but you could check those and identify the rest of yours faster than i would be able to.

If you can help on this or not, no problem, and your own contest submission is higher priority. I wish you luck in your submission, it would be really great to see you win. I reviewed all of my pics (uploaded and some not yet uploaded) and am afraid i don't have any standouts that could be contenders. Don't miss the postmark deadline tomorrow, if you are postal mailing your submission! Cheers, doncram (talk) 00:11, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

hey i don't think we really have any big disagreement. like i note u r very consistent in just putting in year, rather than full date for NRHP date added, which i actually respect. this is consistent. push me with a feather. i just differ mildly.
the Ocean drive one is a nice one. :)
thanks for agreeing to add ur photo credits. i had just gone, so far, thru i think #75 alphabetically in the NY list. doncram (talk) 02:54, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
quick check: I count 1 NHL pic for u in NYC, and 23 in the rest of NY. Ur double-checking that, quickly would be helpful. Altho i may have tabulated most of your RI and other contributions, never mind about your contributions in states other than NY, for today, i am focussing on NY alone (executive decision). doncram (talk) 18:59, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

Hello there, you may recall I was mistakenly blocked from editing the other day, due to suspected vandalism. I'm now asking if you can tell me how one goes about alerting or contacting a Wikipedia administrator of vandalism being done by another editor. Specifically, in this instance, IP 193.120.116.178 (please see my history for my reverts of vandalism by this user done today). As you will see, this user has a long history of vandalism, and I am concerned that this user will continue to vandalize Wikipedia. As such, in the future, I would like to be able to alert an administrator when this activity is taking place, if you can advise me of how to do this.

Further . . . I sent a message to this user stating "I have requested that you be permanently blocked from ever editing Wikipedia pages, due to your destructive and juvenile vandalism of pages. Until such time as you are permanently blocked, I will monitor each and every edit you make, and revert said edits unless you immediately provide verifiable reference source to justify your edits." This user has just left a message on my talk page as follows: My Worthy Foe - I accept your challenge. Give me a few moments and then the games will begin. 193.120.116.178 (talk) 22:20, 2 July 2008 (UTC). Thank you in advance for your reply. 71.141.114.187 (talk) 22:31, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Stanley Tucci in DWP.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Stanley Tucci in DWP.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Re:Plagiarism remarks at DYK[edit]

Hi Daniel, thanks for your response. Doug has been a long-term problem for me, so I apologize if I sounded a bit testy at the DYK page.

Unfortunately, I think we have to look very carefully at every article he creates for plagiarism and other sourcing problems. His first DYK, Dionigi di Borgo San Sepolcro, was blanked for plagiarism/copyvio, then rewritten. I've just been looking at Lithophane, which was on DYK on May 19, and it has significant plagiarism--some sentences are taken verbatim from other webpages, and some sentences are taken from other webpages with only slight rephrasing. Doug clearly thinks that having his articles mentioned on DYK is a feather in his cap--and a guarantee of the article's quality--so I have no doubt he'll be submitting more articles, and they should be carefully vetted.

I do think Doug means well, and he's very enthusiastic about contributing to Wikipedia. Unfortunately, I don't think he understands the problems with the way he writes articles. I have tried to inform him about this in the past, but because I've had extensive conflicts with him in the past, he thinks every criticism I make springs from personal animus. So if someone else could let him know that plagiarism is a serious problem, that might help--but I've found Doug to be extremely resistant to outside input. --Akhilleus (talk) 14:38, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I noticed that you reviewed my DYK nom for FBI Buffalo Field Office and was wondering exactly what was wrong with the article that makes it only a "Maybe" for featuring. From what I have gathered the main source that I have used http://buffalo.fbi.gov/ fits Wikipedia's reliable sources criteria because it is published by the U.S. government. Any help fixing up the nom so that I can get it featured on the main page would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance and All the Best,--Mifter (talk) 16:00, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, I have re-directed the first Cite and added a second one, the first one still goes to the page it used to http://buffalo.fbi.gov/specialty_programs.htm, which is the list of the offices two Specialty Program, (There FBI SWAT division and further down the Evidence Response Teams' section) and the second cite that I put in goes to http://buffalo.fbi.gov/investigative_programs.htm which is the complete list of the departments investigative programs. The first cite shows the two Specialty Programs that the Office has and the second shows the over 10 Investigative Programs that the department has, which are the main two points in the DYK. If you could please look over this and if it now meets the reliability guidelines for DYK could you OK it to appear in one of the next DYK updates? Thanks again and All the Best, --Mifter (talk) 16:38, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking the time to read this sixth edition of the project's newsletter. As always, thanks to anyone who made any type of edit that improved an article relating to The Office. The size of the edit or edits does not matter, as any help ultimately helped out that article, and thus the entire Project. As always, don't forget to check into the project main page every once and a while, where I will periodically post announcements that are related to different events. Have a great month everybody, and happy editing!

DYK[edit]

Could you please clarify exactly what it is I need to quote? I've cited the statement to a reputable journal, in fact that statement is pretty much the thrust of the entire article in that journal. Sabine's Sunbird talk 00:34, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is the abstract, which covers my point. More generally, for bird articles I have to use a lot of books and articles that aren't available online, this is where you find better more reliable sources. Sabine's Sunbird talk 03:02, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
While I understand the importance of verifiability, and put a lot of effort into finding good sources (including spending a fortune on books and photocopies in the library) I am slightly bewildered when people go way beyond what is required for a traditional referenced work. When I write journal articles (well, I'm doing my first) all that is required is the article information. Unless there is an actual discussion of the paper in question there is no need to duplicate or repeat what the actual text said. (I get similarly annoyed by the requirement to put page numbers when refering to books. If people aren't able to use indexes they are unlikely to be checking references, but I digress). The statement you added it to is hardly controversial. Anyone with Google and the title of the paper cited could check the abstract. And while adding the info to the cite may be admirable if unnecessary, it wasn't required for the purposes of verifiability (and cause to hold up a DYK) and if I were addicted to wikidrama I'd be mildly offended you still refer to it as an allegation in the edit summary. Sabine's Sunbird talk 04:04, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't even joke! Have a look at my FAs - they are all way way too long as it is. Backing up every cite with a quote? *Shudder*. Seriously, like I said, I agree with verifiability. But punish those who abuse the system, not everyone else. If people cite something that doesn't support, slap them by all means. The rule creep is seriously beginning to suck the fun out of Wikipedia. I'm fast getting to the point where I don't ever want to submit an article to FAC ever again. I'm actually sitting on one at the moment that I could get through, but I just don't feel up to it. If I had to quote every cite like you suggest I promise you I wouldn't and I'd give up FA, GA and DYK like that and just stick to writing articles (and hope that no one noticed me). Sabine's Sunbird talk 04:52, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unless I am writing on birds from the Americas all my sources are offline or behind firewalls. Writing the whole article twice (once as text and once as supporting quotes) doesn't appeal. While I agree with some of your points I'm afraid I am still not convinced of the need to quote. Apart from anything else a creative hack could simply make a quote up - it doesn't improve the ability of anyone to check it unless they go to a library or are at uni. I guess I won't be getting many more DYKs. Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:14, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quotes from sources[edit]

Hello, I was away for the weekend and didn't notice until this morning that you asked for a quote from the source I used for the Greg & Steve DYK. I added it this morning, although I have no idea if it's an accepted format since I've not been asked to add such a thing before. So I can read up on the guideline, can you point me to where we outline our requirement to provide quote from sources we use, and what the formatting standard is? --Laser brain (talk) 13:58, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh! I did not know about that parameter. It is immensely useful, and I thank you for pointing it out. I often use academic search engines to dig up sources that are hard to verify without library access. --Laser brain (talk) 15:28, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel -- as you are probably aware, the username policy contains no prohibition against long usernames. I'm going to remove your note to the guy, all it would do is confuse him, since the username policy won't back you up. Mangojuicetalk 22:31, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, no, it's not confusing actually, it's made up of names and quite memorable, but if you think it's confusing go ahead and discuss it with the user. Sure, I wouldn't want to type it all out but I never do so for anyone anyway, because even perfectly reasonable usernames can have lots of close variations. (e.g. User:DanielCase User:Danielcase User:Daniel case User:Daneil Case). As for the bot, remember the bot doesn't detect bad usernames, it detects usernames that should be looked at. Certainly, there is a compelling reason to look at very long usernames. I've seen a number of the form "User:This admin I don't like takes horse cock up the ass" and such, and people do occasionally make complete gibberish usernames long enough to get caught by that. Admins are expected to use their judgement in response to the bot reports: those names are not thought by anyone to be bad necessarily. Mangojuicetalk 22:41, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:HAU, Status, and you![edit]

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible) system - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 22:50, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Landmarked building help[edit]

I started work on Colonnade Row after walking past it this morning and realising it had no wiki article. I know you work mainly on NRHP and while I find no evidence its on the Register, I think landmarked buildings have some of the same issues. I'm still working on it, although about to go offline now, but I was wondering if you had any input? I want to find more on the history of the row. Luckily a lot of NY Times from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are free. Is there anything else that needs to be included that you can think of? Hmm, I know what the Wiki article says but it appears that the Landmarks Commission disagrees with regard to its landmark status. Specifically footnote 4 in the linked document which says, "4. Of the original nine houses, Nos. 428-434 are extant and are designated New York City Landmarks and this map, which appears to be lacking a key but I believe "20" is the Row. This site has links to the landmarks report which appear reliable and acurate. Appears as if it was nominated for the National Register. It lasted ~2 hrs so has avoided NPP, woohoo. TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 03:39, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I don't get it. I'm guessing age as some of the same designated as part of the inaugural crop are "missing" as well. That and the city's website has never been the epitome of functionality. I'm going to play around with it a bit more today and then go take a photo Friday when I'm back down that way. It's fun, if nothing else. I swear my favorite articles to work on are those that are utterly random. Thanks for your help. TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 13:15, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One more and I'm going away, according to this, it is on the national register under the LaGrange Terrace name. See also here. Whatever it is or isn't, I think it's notable :) TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 14:50, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help! I'm having a devil of a time figuring out what name the article should be under, although Colonnade Row gets a lot more relevant hits (in terms of info quality, not number necessarily) than LaGrange. I think that's the "media name" now due in part to its sign, which was what caught my attention yesterday. I found a lot more information and am working on it now. I think the LaGrange redirect is a good one, it can be moved later if necessary. Thanks again! TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 15:49, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for your help here, it's one of my two non-museum DYKs. I'm branching out, slowly. I took some Rockland County photos for you, but had some sun issues so the pics weren't the quality I'd want for an article. Will try again. TCariMy travels 01:27, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel -- I know that according to the guidelines on DYK, it says that articles should be 1500 characters, I have expanded it to about 1050 currently, and was wondering if you could re-review the hook, and possibly comment on it? The original DYK person slapped it with a no image, and I don't think planned on going back to the hook. Thanks~ --Admrb♉ltz (tclog) 04:47, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Marine debris GA review[edit]

Hi, Daniel. Firstly, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to do such a thorough review of the article marine debris. While a slight downer that it didn't make it (it wasn't even worthy of B-class!), I feel the article is now sufficiently improved to achieve B-class, or even GA, as all of your initial qualms have since been fixed. Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Streep_and_Frankel_shooting_DWP.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. Apologies for the slight error I introduced in the hook last night. I tried to rewrite the hook to make it a little more elegant and in doing so it seemed appropriate to name both counties for balance. Then I noticed that one of them wasn't a county, but a town. Unfortunately at that stage I didn't have time to do any more editing and decided that close enough would have to be good enough. Putting the update together - which was already overdue when I started it - already made for a very late night, if I'd spent any more time on it I would practically have been going to bed at dawn. Usually I would spend more time getting things right, but the time just wasn't there last night. Fortunately you were around to see the mistake and fix it. Re: Three images from The Devil Wears Prada[edit]

Could you go into some detail about how, exactly, you believe those pictures are replaceable, given that they all had rationales noting that they were production stills, illustrated and greatly enhanced the adjacent text in the article, were of an irrepeatable event (the production of the movie), and were within the informal limit of four fair-use images allowed in most articles about television or movie productions? (Two of them had bad backlinks because of a recent move, but that's been fixed). Daniel Case (talk) 09:33, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Before you say it could be done with text, consider also that The Devil Wears Prada is a movie about fashion, a very visual art form. It helps to have pictures for readers, especially those not familiar with what a particular designer's clothes look like to be able to visualize what that would look like from mere text (which is most of them). I might be willing to agree with you that having more than one picture of Meryl Streep in costume is too much (I'd prefer, then, to keep the one of her with Patricia Field). I've trimmed a lot of the fair use images from this article recently with the intention of taking it to FAC; I don't see why I should have to get rid of all of them, especially given the subject. Daniel Case (talk) 09:56, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The two Meryl Streep pictures don't focus on her costuming, they focus on her working with the director and the costume designer. Having a picture of that doesn't give much greater understanding than just text. I may have been a bit hasty to tag the Emily Blunt shot along with them. Part of the fair use rules is minimalism, one image rather than two if one satisfactory image is available. Now I haven't seen the movie (everyone keeps telling me to, will get to it eventually), but surely there's a scene where Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt's characters are together in the same frame and wearing those costumes? Melesse (talk) 19:28, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
it isn't often we have stills of people from either side of the camera working together in a movie and, I think, it's one thing to read it in the accompanying text but another to actually see it I still don't really see how a picture gives any better understanding than text. And if free images are available, you have to use them instead, even if they're not as nice. Be careful with stuff from Flickr though, some people on there lie and steal. Melesse (talk) 03:45, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Beg to differ![edit]

Hi, FYI via an effective rv...

I see no sense to break up some category that is large because it's accurately describing something REALLY large... with resorting to artifical and likely deceptive artificial subdivisions outside normal categorization schemas.

Other than that when editing categories, note that commoncats replaces both commons cat (and several others of similar names and function) AND catmore.

 1. plus can informationally link upto two other articles AND two other categories using parameters 2A=, 3A=, 2C=, or 3C=.
 2. If the article pagename doesn't match the category's, {} or 1A= can be specified.
 3. If the Article name is fine, but the commons category name is slightly different, * still defaults to PAGENAME like Catmore and one can specify the commons category using {} or 1C=name.

Best regards // FrankB 17:23, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just because it's a big thing in real life doesn't mean the category has to be so damn big and indiscriminate. It's getting hard to find things in that mess.

I broke up Category:Orange County, New York and Category:Ulster County, New York when they started getting to the same size, along topical lines that mirror those used for state-level cats. As it is, all the separate communities, incorporated or not, could easily be grouped into a "Communities" subcategory like I made for the other two counties. I have separated RHP categories for Orange and Ulster because Category:Registered Historic Places in New York is getting too big, even with all the NYC listings in a separate category. (And one could and should easily be created for Westchester. I just don't do that many Westchester-themed articles, so it lacks urgency). See also Category:Nassau County, New York, similarly subdivided by Noroton.

What that category really needs is some sensible subcategorization ... it looks like nobody gave it much thought (why on earth would "Burials at Gate of Heaven Cemetery" need to be at the next level under the county?) or, more likely, different users at different times just added things as they thought necessary. Daniel Case (talk) 17:55, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks... chaulk it up to differences in philosophy. I'm tending these days to bigger more consistent categories and damn the length. Made a VPP or category talk post on that as a reply to someone earlier in the month asking about why our categories were so different than the German wikipedia, but damn if I can find it... shrug. DYK update and archiving[edit]

Hi, Daniel. Thanks for all your hard work. But I've noticed that you archive the new set of hooks just promoted to the front page, but, as it is stated here, the previous set of hooks should be copied to the archive, not the new one. The reason for this is that revisions are quite often made to the hooks after update and it is best to archive the final version. Thanks. --BorgQueen (talk) 07:24, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Balmy Alley Mission SF2.jpg[edit]

Daniel, can you please explain your thinking about this being a non-free image? The murals in the Mission are public art Balmy Alley. No one commissioned them, no one owns them, and they have no commercial value. Taking a picture of a mural in Balmy Alley is like taking a picture of a Hopi sandstone hieroglyphic. (Also, please respond here so we can keep the conversation in one place). --Paul (talk) 20:44, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems from looking at the bottom left-hand corner that there's a copyright notice on the mural, and a rather recent one at that. Images of copyrighted public art, including murals, are inherently derivative works as the tag I left on the image says (it's still in Precita Eyes, where I could write a rationale for it). Daniel Case (talk) 20:48, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, see this at the Precita Eyes website:

Q: "What is copyright protection?"

A: Federal law protects original works such as murals, paintings, books, music, sculptures, movies, etc. Copyright law gives the artist exclusive rights to: make copies, distribute copies, make derivative works (taking a picture of a mural and then selling it), publicly perform the work, and publicly display the work. Visual artists also receive a separate bundle of rights - the right to get credit for their mural and to determine in what context the mural will appear. As a result, the artist and only the artist, may give you permission to use a reproduction of a mural in your film or publication. Doing so without permission is not only a violation of the law, it is disrespectful to the muralists who work for months creating San Francisco's murals.

Q: "What is the difference between the Golden Gate Bridge and a Mural?" A: A mural is a piece of fine art, for which Congress has granted federal copyright protection. Congress did so to encourage artists to contribute their talent to our culture. By law, artists are entitled to compensation for reproductions of their work. Photos of older architectural structures, like the Golden Gate Bridge, are not protected by copyright law, recently however, even architectural designs have been protected by Congress.

Q: "When does copyright protection begin?" A: The copyright protection in a mural exists from the moment the artist paints the mural; it is then protected by copyright law.

Q: "How may someone other than the artist use the artist's work?" A: In order to use the artist's work, you must get the artist's permission.

Remember: Just because a mural can be seen by the public does not mean everyone can use it in any way that they want.

Example: When someone has a flower garden in the front yard, others are not free to pick the flowers, even though the flowers are visible and easily accessible to the public. Similarly, just because a car is parked on the street, it is not public property. Neither are murals.

Q: "May tourists take photos of the murals without permission?"

A: Yes, as long as no reproduction for profit is intended. If it is purely for private use, a tourist may take a photo of the mural without permission.

(Emphasis mine)

Public art does not automatically mean public domain art (See also panorama freedom). It's pretty clear from the FAQ that the Precita Eyes people know copyright law well, and so do we. The terms above preclude our use of it as a free image, since it must be free for commercial reuse and they do not grant that right. If some of the muralists want to license their work under free licenses, they can and then we can use the pictures. But not until (You can use externalimage in the meantime). Daniel Case (talk) 20:57, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is also this:

Example: If a newspaper art critic writes a critique of a mural, then the newspaper could publish a photo of the critiqued mural. Art criticism would be considered fair use. Freelance travel writers who intend to sell articles with mural photos must get permission and pay a license fee.

Given that you have reduced the resolution of the image, the example that Precita Eyes gives above, and the fact that the image in the San Francisco article is meant to illustrate generic murals in The Mission neighborhood, it seems clear to me that the use falls under fair use.--Paul (talk) 03:39, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but ... Wikipedia's policies are stricter than fair use under US law so that we may promote free content. This means that content we publish must wherever possible be free for commercial reuse. The Precita murals are specifically not. Also, the question is, does its use in the San Francisco and Mission District articles comply with FUC #8? Do we really need to have a picture of a single, specific, identifiable mural to make that point about the alley clear to the reader? (It certainly isn't "generic" ... I doubt the muralist would have put a copyright notice on it if they thought it was generic. Perhaps you meant in the sui generis sense?

My guess is that a picture like the one on the main Balmy Alley page, in which we see many of the murals from an oblique angle and get a sense of their context, would possibly be uploadable as a free image since it would comply with our limited panorama freedom here in the US, or would definitely be more defensible as fair use since it would go a lot longer to show the alley as a whole and how the murals are laid out.

We don't seem to have one like that on Commons (in fact, many of the alley pictures there will have to be deleted as unfree images), but there's this one on Flickr under a CC-BY license that we might be able to use. And this one. Or, if you're in SF, would it be possible to go there and take one? Daniel Case (talk) 05:13, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

NRHP category suggestion[edit]

Hey! Since you're creating categories like a fiend, how 'bout Category:Archaeological sites on the National Register of Historic Places? Or Category:Archeological sites on the National Register of Historic Places, depending on how one thinks it should best be spelled? Anyways, keep up the good work, doncha know. :) --Ebyabe (talk) 18:19, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think there are categories like Category:Archaeological sites in Alabama for each state. I suspect that most of these are nrhps, but I don't really know. This should be investigated before creating new categories, IMO.--Appraiser (talk) 18:32, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Return of problematic editor[edit]

Greetings, DC. Would you please take a look at 69.136.96.119 (talk · contribs)'s activity over the last eleven days — since his yearlong vandalism block expired? S/he's been inserting POV and OR, removing valid content, tags, and templates, edit warring and generally making messes for others to clean up. Edit summaries are scarce but the few that exist spuriously claim this editor's edits are aimed at "restoring NPOV". As you can see from the user's talk page, there've been numerous (unheeded) warnings and requests to edit coöperatively. It appears this editor simply waited for his block clock to wind down and immediately returned to some of the problematic behaviour that earned the block in the first place. Can you suggest what might be done? Thanks. —Scheinwerfermann (talk) 00:12, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

¡Aye, caramba! I had my suspicions about Kennedy & Co. (talk · contribs), but having just got back from a part of the world that's a 14-hour plane ride away, I hadn't the brainpower to look into it. Glad you caught that, thanks. It's this sort of thing that makes me think I might like to try for adminship. Not sure how an RfA would go for me; I think I have the edit count for it, and I can coherently explain my reasons and positions, and I am ready and willing to talk honestly about my imperfections and missteps. I donno, whatchya think? Your advice and comments would be much appreciated. —Scheinwerfermann (talk) 15:59, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User now circumventing block?[edit]

Hi again. H'mmm...we see this, and then this edit appears in the middle of a fairly large batch of sequential and bizarre edits to my talk page. It seems s/he realised after making the comment that oops, it might not look so good to appear to be deliberately using a different account to circumvent a block. Whatchya think? —Scheinwerfermann (talk) 23:01, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User now requesting unblock[edit]

this looks a lot like hot, steamy ask-the-other-parent action to me, whaddya think? (And, any thoughts on my admin muse above?) —Scheinwerfermann (talk) 00:18, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK problem editor[edit]

I have asked that the Mesodermochelys article be removed from candidates for DYK.[3] I also think the editor should be banned for some time from DYK until she reconsiders her actions, due to the nature of her edits, having already been accused of plagiarizing, and now purposefully reverting substantive edits to make the edit count for DYK to obtain her count award, and doing this while using personal attacks in edit summaries. See the DYK link for links to further details. I posted this on a couple of user pages, but it should be discussed at DYK or AN/I.[4] --Blechnic (talk) 04:42, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think a general plan of action should be discussed at DYK, but asking her to not be allowed to continue, even if it is impossible to do this, is a community issue in general. I could be wrong about this. --Blechnic (talk) 05:04, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Try to remember[edit]

Do you remember any hooks you have suggested for articles you neither created or nominated that you placed on the Next Update for DYK. I don't necessarily mean recently; I mean ever. It would help.--Bedford Pray 15:24, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have a case at ArbCom, where people are making a big deal out of a hook I suggested (but not create or nominated the article) being placed by me on the DYK Next Update. I wanted to show that there was precedence for this, but it would be like finding a needle in a haystack to show this. I don't want you in trouble; far from it. I just wanted to show what I did was not without precedent.--Bedford Pray 15:30, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't see where you placed it on Template:Did you know/Next update‎. If you can think of another example, let me know ASAP. Thanks.--Bedford Pray 16:04, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Admin potential[edit]

Howdy, DC. You write, inter alia: Let me look over your contribution history and see if you would be a worthy candidate. Is there anything in there that you would probably have to explain? (Or another way of putting it: what's your most embarassing moment as a Wikipedian.

My most embarassing moment as a Wikipedian actually extends over a ten-month period: In September 2007, I got caught up in a quarrel over details of an illustration of a fuel injector, and instead of keeping proper perspective about the relative importance of the topic at hand, I let my mouth run away with me. The other party in the quibble was very unhappy with my choice of language, and made it known in numerous forums and discussions not related to the original, but it wasn't until May of 2008 that I went back and declawed my text. I did so not because my feet were held to the fire or for any other expedient reason, but because I took another look at what I'd written and realised I'd been discourteous and gotten wound up way out of proportion to the details of an illustration of a fuel injector. I'd gotten distracted by the spurious goal of being "right" rather than keeping my focus on the improvement of the image in particular and the project in general.

During those ten months, I did a great deal of explaining how Wikipedia works (and doesn't work) to a lot of new editors, particularly IP-only editors whose enthusiasm for their pet topics outstripped their regard for WP's protocol and standards of information quality — many new editors regard the rules as a bureaucracy for its own sake, for the privileged few to exercise authoritarian control over what can be added and by whom. I found myself explaining tenets, philosophy and principles so often that I put together a participant's guide of sorts on my user page.

As is to be expected, these educational efforts of mine met with mixed results. But I feel the exercise was of great benefit to me in that it drove me to take a hard look at my own contributions and find areas for improvement. One of those is in adherence to it's not what I know, it's what I can document. This is a real toughie for anyone who's enthusiastic and knowledgeable about any given topic, and I'm no exception, but it is absolutely crucial to the quality of this encyclopædia we're building. Another aspect of my contributions I've worked to improve, as I say, is in keeping a civil tone and an appropriate perspective on whatever matter is at hand during discussions. This can get difficult when opinions are passionately held, but it, too, is critical to the success of the project. I think I've probably babbled at enough length here on your talk page, and will be interested to read your thoughts, should you feel like sharing them. —Scheinwerfermann (talk) 15:57, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please review the activity at Ford FE and at the Dodge Ram article. You will find complaints from many users, IP users and users who want to hide their IP's, that Scheinwerfermann's concept of it's not what I know, it's what I can document crosses the line towards abusive editing. I personally filed a vandalism complaint against him. Not being a Wiki-lawyer, it was dismissed out of hand for some scribble I didn't dot. Whatever. This guy's talk about seeing the light in May is just about when complaints about his 'style' were peaking. And then everything got 'archived' or buried under an onslaught of minor edit history.
I am biased, this is a biased opinion. Take it for what it's worth. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.107.58.130 (talk) 18:57, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Gerald Gonzalez[edit]

In regards to your comment about one of his alleged socks:

First, I do not feel inclined to reward such a pathetic outburst of begging. Second, the fact that you and Gerald Gonzales both concentrate on Filipino/a TV stars, and Philippine TV in general, marking almost all your edits as minor even when they aren't, suggests you're the same person.

Besides that, his writing style suggests that Cutie guyx22 is Gerald, as seen here:

"Unblock me please! I am not a Sock Puppet of Gonsales or anything here but Blakegripling ph blocked me without any reason Its really Unfair, Why this happened to me?! Please UNBLOCK me! I'm not a sockpuppet. Also Since I've been a Wikipedian, This User:Blakegripling ph really seems has an angry to me, I dont know why. So please teach Blakegripling to be discipline wikipedian and to be open minded on blocking wikipedians. I am not a sock puppet so i expect that i will be Unblock. Thankyou! He seems to have a habit of capitalizing some words when they aren't necessary; I saw his Friendster profile recently, and here's the proof:

As of now,I am a disciplined person and truely its me.I have a big conscience to the people who are in problem,Trials and Troubles.I am lovable to everybody,I'm really lovable I have a unique Heart.I lovw all the people and Idont want to have an enemy I want all friends just to make me happy at all the Times.

Mass overcategorization question[edit]

Hello Daniel- I found your name on Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion#Current_discussions and thought you might be able to advise me. I just noticed that an editor has been mass-creating unnecessary categories and over-categorizing articles with them. I know how to bring up individual categories for deletion discussion, but I'm not sure what you do when someone has unilaterally mass-produced them. He has made many new categories recently with the naming convention Religious organizations established in the <decade> for many decades. He has categorized dozens of abbey articles with them, it seems. I am sure we do not need a category for each decade of abbey construction. In addition, the word organization is inappropriate in any case, as many abbeys can belong to one "religious organization". You will see on the editor's talk page some indication that he has been considered by other editors to be overzealous in his categorization endeavors. A search hereon the word abbey will give you an idea of how many articles this activity affects. Thanks in advance for any advice on how to proceed. -Eric talk 20:59, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Funny you should ask because I have been meaning for some time to bring up the whole slew under Category:American university and college presidents as "performer by performance" (College administrators will have many positions in a career; no single one of them should be defining as to merit a Wikipedia category. Miami International University? I mean, really ...). I think you have to go through the process for the first one, then when you add the tag to the subsequent ones it has to link to the original CfD. It explains how to do this somewhere on the page. Daniel Case (talk) 21:37, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's there. Look under II on the CFD instruction template for groups of categories. If you want help with this, I'll do what I can. (I can see decade categories for the last two or three centuries, where better records are available, but for the Middle Ages? Wouldn't centuries be better?) Thanks for uploading Image:3500 Club patch.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Hi there, how are you? Quick question -- I started working on what I thought was a historic house museum and it turns out it's on the National Register of Historic Places. I realised when I tried to work with the bare infobox that I wasn't sure exactly what needed doing, or where to get some of the basic information so I figured I'd toss it on your radar. Don't think it's going to be much more than a stub, it seems itty bitty but it was fun to do. TravellingCari 17:56, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No worries on being busy, I just tossed it on your radar because I had no idea on some parts of it. Learning about the infobox generator helped a lot too because I'd left most of it blank. I think if it gets to a DYK, at least on my end, it's going to be a 5x expansion type of DYK because I won't have time this weekend either. Thanks for the other NR link with the sourcing. Re: Rockland, I lived in South Nyack but Sloatsburg wouldn't have been a problem. I've moved now but really do need to take my camera when I go back to my Mom's in the next couple of weeks. Just an idea[edit]

I noticed this picture on the DYK nom page and I was wondering if you still had the original pic on your camera because if you had a version that doesn't have the artifacting, I think that pic could be a featured picture. Just wondered because it's an excellent photo. Thingg 01:57, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What I meant when I asked that is do you have a form of this picture that isn't in the jpg format or a way to get one? I think the compression may be what's causing the articfacting but I'm not sure. I'm not too incredibly familiar with the FPC process, so I'm not sure what would have to be done (if anything) to improve the pic. If it's not too much trouble, I'd would like to have the original pic so I can take a shot at removing the artifacting. Thanks. Thingg 02:21, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'll see what I can do... Thingg 02:42, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I was able to improve it quite a bit, but I'm not sure if it's good enough. I uploaded it to Image:Image-St Andrew's Episcopal Church, Brewster, NY test.png. (yeah I know, laugh at me for the extra "image"....) Wat do you think? Thingg 16:02, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I like this picture but I've had similar experiences with the FPC crowd. I think they will dislike the fuzzy tree leaves near the bottom-left of the photo, and the red doors "bleeding" into the hinges slightly. Please don't misinterpret my comments - it's an awesome picture, but you may want to work on those areas a little more before nominating it. Protection?[edit]

I don't know where you're getting the idea that I want it protected from, because that's not the case. Why would I want a page protected that hasn't had any problems? It needs fixing, and protection is not the answer. Infact, it's disruptive, and that's the opposite of what the article needs. It looks like you're assuming bad faith. It's not my version, because both versions are "his". I'm just looking out for the article, and am making the changes that are necessary. --Pwnage8 (talk) 15:03, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking is used to prevent disruption, not to punish the editor(s). I don't think it was so out of hand that the page had to be protected. I have seen way worse. Must've been a slow day or something.. but it's only for 3 days, and I don't care that much. --Pwnage8 (talk) 18:02, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't link to the warning, but my post, as I didn't want to retype it in the edit summary. I flat out said I was going to revert one more time, and then let him decide what to do. No malicious behaviour on my part at all. Never has been. I just want to make that clear. And I didn't know I had an attitude. I don't want to come off as hostile (the typed word can sometimes be interpreted that way) because that's not the case at all. What I meant about three days is that it's not a big deal like it's two weeks or something. I just want that article better, as you do. It's had huge chunks taken out of it lately, with nothing to replace what was lost, and I'm concearned about that. --Pwnage8 (talk) 18:27, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My name is random, neutral, and not prohibited under Wikipedia's username policy. I take it YOU were rubbed the wrong way with my name, which is further indicated by your constant assumption of bad faith, and the fact that you'd rather see it changed. Let it go. I've been editing for a year and a half, and will not change it. If someone takes the time to cut articles down, they also have the time to add to them. You can delete whole articles with notable subject matter just because the sources aren't reliable, without even looking for more sources. It's called deletionism. I'm concearned that this is happening to the article. --Pwnage8 (talk) 18:49, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you take my assumption of assuming bad faith as assuming bad faith, then that's the only way I could've violated it. I didn't say deletionism is blockable, nor did I imply. Why do you keep bringing up blocks? And it does look like I'll have to rebuild the article myself, but I hope not, because I have other things to do as well. But that's just the way the cookie crumbles. --Pwnage8 (talk) 19:37, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I do see there's a big DYK backlog but as I'm starting to get just a bit worried about my DYK proposal (at the bottom of August 4), I thought I'd translate for you the two quotes I used for the hook. [5]: "The cathedral's plan is inspired by that of 'Saint Sophia' in Constantinople (today Istanbul), built by Emperor Justinian..." and [6]: "...the architectural style is inspired by late Renaissance forms, greatly resembling the famous Roman church of 'Trinita del Monte'". Usernames[edit]

I would like us all to be singing from the same hymn book here. You spend a lot of time at WP:UAA - more than I do, I think. You often warn editors with suspect, or indeed very suspect names, which other admins might have username-blocked. A question; when you post a warning, how long do you think the editor should be given to answer before further action is decided on? Should it depend on whether they have edited since your warning? I am thinking particularly not about offensive names, but of names including suffixes such as "bot" or "admin", which may be good faith names. Or, of course, may not. --Anthony.bradbury"talk" 20:06, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, that's fine. I am one who reviews the "holding pen", but did not want to tread too hard on your toes by removing one which you had flagged in what you might have called a premature way. --Anthony.bradbury"talk" 20:21, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of RHPs in Dutchess and Columbia counties[edit]

Hi -- I am up to the "D's" in NYS county lists of RHPs, converting to table format. I think it usually is a good thing to do now. For example it encouraged me to contact friends in Cortland County to ask them to add pics into the new table now.

I wonder if you could take a look at the Dutchess and the Columbia county ones, in particular. They are only partway developed, but i did indicate NHLs and add some pics. For Dutchess, Poughkeepsie is the largest town and could be split out, but despite 235 entries the county-wide list is just 82kb, not too terribly large in my view (with more space to be yielded by merging in duplication below, more space to be lost by adding pics and descriptions). If you want Poughkeepsie or others split out, or if you don't like the table version at all, let me know.

Also, as you know Hudson River Heritage Historic District spans both of those 2 counties, but I wasn't thinking and/or knowledgeable enough to select a representative pic from the 2 counties to use in their list-tables; i am afraid i may have posted a Dutchess pic in the Columbia county's list-table. doncram (talk) 16:25, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, i've opted to split out List of RHPs in Poughkeepsie and List of RHPs in Rhinebeck, out of List of RHPs in Dutchess, leaving about 106 in the latter with current filesize 37k, which is fine in my view. Have added pics from many articles...these are all three becoming really nice photo galleries of your work. :) Done for now. Feel free to browse and fix up further. doncram (talk) 19:04, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Further, i checked the "Map of all coordinates" display for each and have commented out incorrect NRIS coords for 2 in Poughkeepsie. The google maps otherwise look really neat to me. With your eye you may be able to spot others that should be commented out. I tend to assume a bad coord is all bad, rather than assume that it is just any one digit that is wrong, by the way. I put in a currently-rather-lengthy draft standard footnote about NRIS coords, using a template, into these articles, by the way. Later, doncram (talk) 19:43, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Your edits to the 3 list-articles help. Currently there appear to be 41 rows in Rhinebeck, 91 rows in Poughkeepsie, and 106 rows in the rest of Dutchess County, which i kind of moronically totalled to assert there are 238 RHPs in the county (incorrect because there are duplications) in the Dutchess article. About splitting out Hyde Park, you could do that to make a nice list-article about it if you want. It is only about 21 or so entries. I would have split it out already, deferring to your apparent preference for doing so, but you complicated it by saying one West Park or other entry should also be included in it. That would have made defining a title for it, and describing it in the Dutchess County article, more complicated. And i see no need for article-size reasons to split it out, but you are welcome to split it out for other reasons. Anyhow, I am glad to see these all taking shape. I am up to the H's now in the List of RHPs in NY counties, plus having addressed scattered other counties, in setting up tables for each one.
Also, I am curious to learn what kind of inquiry you sent to the NPS about naming conventions, and what response you got, though i don't promise to roll over to some pronouncement that might not serve wikipedia list-titling needs. I do think it somewhat unfortunate that the naming issue devolved into "voting" too quickly, rather than doing more research and brainstorming. I appreciate that Motorrad-67(?) bowed out after having his say based on his industry experience; i actually think that was mature for him to figure out that was appropriate for him as a relative newbie in wikipedia or otherwise. doncram (talk) 01:14, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MTA Pictures[edit]

Greetings, first off I have to commend you on the excellent pictures you took of the Patterson, Pawling App Trail and HV Wingdale station, really nice job. If you haven't already taken pics, i think i may go up to Dover, TM, and wassaic this weekend to snap some warm weather shots of them, that aren't blurry. Next month i plan on venturing to the Port Jervis line and Pascack Valley line for some pictures.--English836 (talk) 03:17, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was actually at Wassaic a couple of weekends ago, but I'd be interested in seeing if you can find a way to shoot the station in a way that makes it clear which station it is (i.e., we can see a legible sign for the station and a train), and gets a feel for its context (the way it's got all those hills around it and it really feels like you're out in the middle of the boondocks). Those are my personal criteria for train station photos ... I like to get two out of three, usually sacrificing the train if I don't have time to wait around. At Wassaic I had come up by train so I couldn't drive around and find the right spot, so I got the other two.
I live close to many of the Port Jervis line stations, so I've taken photos at every station from Suffern on. If you want to add something, go ahead (They're rehabilitating the Tuxedo station; that might be interesting). Pascack Valley I have an idea to shoot, but I've not gotten down there. new listings insertions into NYS RHP lists[edit]

Thanks for updating the several NYS RHP lists, which I think are all on my watchlist for now. I like how you did it with Chenango County better, adding into the table right away with all the info from the new listings announcement (though i am not sure if you recorded the refnum in the description column, also seems to be helpful to do). I converted your Albany County addition that way, as i was able to find the new listing page, recording the refnum too. Perhaps on the others you didn't do the table rows because you didn't want to do all the laborious renumbering? In my view it's fine to just insert a new row between 30 and 31 and just give it number 30.5. Anyhow, i guess i don't mind looking up and adding the other new ones into the tables, too, while it's still clear where those new ones came from. Thanks. doncram (talk) 22:46, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Updated the NYS RHP lists for all the new listings of 8/29, and checked back to 8/8 previous update date recorded. Whew. Gives me incentive to eliminate those old lists below the new tables in each of the counties, but there's still a lot of work in that, too. doncram (talk) 00:06, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. Glad you like to have the local additions. You've done a lot of developing of some of the county lists. One of the sentences in your article seems to be incomplete at the end because it's missing a dependent clause. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:19, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm the creator of this article and I was wondering if you would mind pulling some strings so it gets re-added. I understand why you removed if from 'articles created on Aug 30th', but the only reason it had tags on it was because one editor took a dislike to it. He nominated it for deletion, 5 editors opposed him, and then he put tags on it to spoil it. It would be a shame for his petty behaviour to spoil someone else's hard work. See the article's talk page to see what I mean. Thanks in advance:) Malick78 (talk) 10:19, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

 • Thanks for the input, but I'm puzzled by one thing: "this sort of focuses on a negative aspect of living people." Surely if the people are imprisoned for such a heinous crime, then there's not to much good to say about them? Or have I misunderstood you? Malick78 (talk) 13:00, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Calling all active WP:NOVELS members[edit]

WikiProject Novels Roll Call

WikiProject Novels is currently holding a roll call, which we hope to have annually. Your username is listed on the members list, but we are unsure as to which editors are still active within the project. If you still consider yourself an active WP:Novels editor, please add your name back to the Active Members list. Also feel free to join any of our task forces and take a look at the project's Job Centre to get involved!

Next month we will begin the coordinator election selection process. We hope to have more involvement and input this time around! More news will be forthcoming. Thanks, everyone! María (habla conmigo) 15:01, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Advice on UAA issue requested[edit]

Daniel. I have been doing some UAA work lately and I try to follow the lead from more experienced admins in that arena. Today I had an exchange with User talk:ICadmin discussing his username. His answer is discouraging and as I want to be fair to the guy, I'm at a loss as to how to proceed from here. I did mention to him that he just admitted to a COI issue and also notified him about our POV policy. Is this enough to do a soft username block and request he changes it? Then we might/will not know if/when he violates COI. Can you offer any advice here? Thanks. -- Alexf42 00:48, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:Sinolinkconsulting[edit]

User:Sinolinkconsulting was blocked for a promotional username, and is now proposing to change it to Scarlett77. As they are having trouble using the unblock template I have posted the request for them here as a procedural matter only. I am not particuarly endorsing an unblock, just helping them with the template.

I am raising this here as you declined the previous unblock request. In my armchair opinion the proposed new username addresses the "promotional" issue but the editor still seems to miss the obvious COI and ad-spam problem in attempting to create an article about their own company. If they do get unblocked and recreate the article I'll give it a once-over in a day or so to see if it is notable and if not send it to AfD tos ettle it once and for all. Euryalus (talk) 06:41, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, and thanks for your response. Just helping them with the template as they seemed to be a bit confused. Hersfold has declined the unblock as the editor hasn't shown they understand the COI or spam problems, which seems like a fair outcome. Euryalus (talk) 21:54, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hi Daniel,

A question regarding today's block of User:Threeafterthree and your unblock request decline here. While I agree with your first reason, of course, that an ABC news blog is a RS and he erred in deleting it from Talk:Sarah Palin, your second reason gives me some pause because the deletion in question was from a BLP Talk page. If a contentious or potentially damaging claim about a living person is unsourced, WP:BLP does say it "should be removed immediately". If I understood you correctly, removal in such a case depends on the editor's intent: could you elaborate on that? JGHowes talk - 19:24, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Myami99 issue for vamdalism on nami tamaki page[edit]

Mr. Daniel,

I am writing to you today in regards to the user Myami 99; this user has continued to vandalise the page entry for Nami Tamaki. Myself and user TJRC (who "moderate" the page frequently) have been removing Myami99's work off Tamaki's page. I see that this user has had blocks temporarily placed. What needs to be done to block the isp or get rid of the account entirely. Now so you know i know for a fact the information being placed there by Myami99 is false; i keep in close contact with Ms. Tamaki on a regular basis as she has requested to be kept informed of what happens to her page here on wikipedia.

To make a long story short, are there any other betteroptions that would take a lot of stress off me and TJRC? AnthonyWalters (talk) 23:35, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice identification, with documentation, that NRHP Silliman Memorial Presbyterian Church was demolished in 1998, which i saw in your edit of List of Registered Historic Places in Albany County, New York. I added it to the growing list at wp:NRIS info issues. You don't mind if i create the stub article for it, do you? retrospective diagnosis DYK (sept 8)[edit]

The comment on the DYK, requesting it be moved to the talk page, was made by an editor attempting to derail the DYK, largely I suspect, because their edits to the article were mostly undone. If you don't think it was a good DYK, then fine, but please don't remove it because of that editor's comments. Colin°Talk 15:00, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. Yes, controversial DYK shouldn't go on the Main Page so you did right. Just your edit summary implied you were doing it because of the comment, which wasn't helpful. This was my first participation in a DYK and I found it confusing. The first reviewer had issues with the original hook. So I offered an alternative. Then another reviewer said the original hook was too long. I wondered why the original was still being reviewed so struck it and make it clear which alternative to use. Is there a convention here? Do you only use strike-out for abandoned DYKs? Should I have just edited the original hook (which would have made the comments below incorrect)? Colin°Talk 17:33, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Asgardian's block[edit]

I have several issues with it atm.

Yes, there have been times where he's likely been deserving.

But I'm not sure that this was one of those times.

And further, I'm concerned with the appearance that someone directly involved in an article editing and discussion did the initial block.

I'm very much leaning towards unblocking, but I'd like to hear your thoughts first. - jc37 05:08, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you know the situation better, and I admit I don't know the extent of Nightscream's involvement as an editor since it was hard to tell, then you could unblock. It's your call. Daniel Case (talk) 05:10, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For better or for worse, yes, I've pretty much been the "neutral mediator" (as it were) for quite some time.
As for this situation, looking at the page history, and especially at Talk:Ultimates#Finale_and_Future_material, really makes me think it may have been inappropriate for Nightscream to be the blocking admin in this case.
I've asked User:Hiding to review the initial block. If he (and/or you) concurs, then I think Nightscream likely deserves a warning concerning tool usage in disputes.
And Asgardian actually described his edit in this case (whether the edit was appropriate or not, is a whole other matter), so he doesn't appear to have gone greatly awry of his arbcom sanctions in the specific edit which he was blocked for.
And he was actually discussing on the talk page (for awhile anyway).
All of these are positive steps.
However, he's still doing large mass edits in a single edit (and has been now for awhile, I note in his edit history), which he's supposed to try to avoid.
For now, would you consider reducing his block to a 48 hour block? (Though with a clear and stiff warning on his talk page, making it clear that he's risking being indefinitely blocked.) - jc37 05:23, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you.
And I've also left a note with User:Emperor, to see if he would be willing to help mentor Asgardian (again). - jc37 05:41, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. For the record, The Ultimates is not the article in which Asgardian's involvement led to his block, but rather, Ultron is. I was not involved in the editing of that article until I intervened to restore the material that Asgardian deleted. I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but I just thought I'd clarify that, in case it was relevant. Nightscream (talk) 06:15, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just so you know, Asgardian again removed the material in question during his rewrite of the Ultron article. I restored it, though in a more brief form, and tried to incorporate it more smoothly into the passage. I thought I'd let you know before/rather than confronting him myself, but if he keeps this up, deleting material that does not conform to his aesthetic whims, without even trying to do what I did himself, or solicit discussion from others, then the problems with him are going to continue. Nightscream (talk) 07:04, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel, Asgardian has returned to his previous behavior deleting out-universe reference to book titles, rather than discuss the issue, despite the fact that he has ignored attempts to discuss the issue. Please advise. Nightscream (talk) 16:26, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The first thing I'd say here is that it is time for Nightscream to get some perspective. I have already stated openly that these consistent essays that appear in response to any of my comments (see my Talk page) smack of obsession and that he needs to take a step back. The following of my edits around Wikipedia also indicates this. This "running and telling behaviour" is also a tad immature and has already alienated one user: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Tbrittreid#top

In short it is not appropriate behaviour for a supposed administrator.

Tiger Shark? If he'd bothered to ask instead of accusing, he could have been told that I had a loss of session data and was going to add still more, but now the overall issue is going to be discussed (at my instigation) on the Galactus Talk page. I don't agree with his block (emotive) nor yours (some assumptions), but there's your reason. Asgardian (talk) 03:46, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The post by me here was in response to an edit by you, not a "response". You removed a reference to a book title, despite the fact that a discussion on that issue is ongoing. That is not appropriate. The fact that you used self-serving or deceptive language in the Edit Summary (which I'm surmising is what you meant by a "comment") may also illustrate a continuation of these habits of yours, but was not, in and of itself, the basis of my comment to Daniel.
In order to even begin showing that my conduct is not a legitimate part of my Wiki duties, you would have to refute one of two statements: 1. It is inappropriate to continue edits that are part of an ongoing discussion. 2. You yourself have engaged in this since your last block lifted. If you cannot do this, then you have no basis for this assertion, and thus "Smack of obsession" is simply another fallacious personal comment in violation of WP:CIVIL, as is “essay”, since monitoring an editor who has been blocked multiple times for constantly violating WP:CONS and WP:CIVIL is perfectly reasonable, and a placing a small message on this Talk Page is hardly an “essay”, with slightly larger ones like this one justified by the range of the falsehoods and fallacies that require rebuttal.
As for User:Tbrittreid, his “irritation” has nothing to do with my monitoring of your edits. He became “irritated” because after he accused the admins who blocked you of “hypocrisy” because he himself was previously blocked by other admins under different standards, I responded by pointing out that one cannot accuse one person of hypocrisy for exhibiting different principles from a different person, and he didn’t like this. Your statement, therefore, that my monitoring of your edits is what irritated him is false, as Daniel can see by reading my exchanges with him.
As for “asking”, I am not required to ask you ad infinitum to follow WP policy. You have been given more than enough benefit of the doubt and leeway regarding your policy violations and incivility towards other editors, with more than enough attempts by me to talk to you over these matters, with little receptivity on your part. On the categorization of Grey Towers National Historic Site[edit]

While I cannot dispute that it may also be an NHS type of NRHP location, according to the text of the article it was declared a NHL in 1963. According to the National Historic Site#United States article:

There are also about 79,000+ National Register of Historic Places sites, which usually are privately owned, of which about 2400 have further been designated as National Historic Landmark sites.

and acording to the National Historic Landmark article:

Out of more than 80,000 U.S.-listed historic places, however, only about 2,430 are NHLs.

Hence I would think that it would be more noteworthy to belong to the smaller more selective group (Landmarks) than the larger group (Sites). Having said that the nrhp type was not the primary reason I made the change. Rather in the category Category:National Historic Sites of the United States you'll note that Grey Towers National Historic Site is the only article listed, apart from the ones on Carribean islands that do not yet have their own subcategories, that is listed in the United States category and not solely in a state named subcategory (the article is correctly listed in Category:National Historic Sites in Pennsylvania). One could argue that this is due to a bug in the Template:Infobox nrhp template that is used in the article. Note the special conditions for nrhp sites in the State of New York that are not in place for other states, such as Pennsylvania. According to WP:SUBCAT

Subcategories are often created in order to break down the members of a category into smaller sets which are easier to browse. This means that articles belonging to such a subcategory should not be placed in the parent category also. For example, Category:Bridges is broken down by country, so Angers Bridge appears in Category:Bridges in France, but not in the parent Category:Bridges.

. The categorization of the article and the appropriateness of the NHL type instead of the NHS type were the reasons I made that edit. 164.55.254.106 (talk) 17:09, 23 September 2008 (UTC) [reply]

DYK[edit]

Following on from this discussion, I offer you this possible solution: Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Possible new nomination process. Thanks for listening. GDallimore (Talk) 08:04, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I responded at User talk:SandyGeorgia#DYK; since I'm not a DYK participant, I'm not sure if my feedback on the process will be helpful, but the concern in that case was not the process (or Daniel Case's removal of that DYK), rather ongoing issues with one editor on the Medicine and Equine Projects. One editor derailed a DYK with original research; perhaps the process could have been more user friendly, but I'm unsure if that was the real problem. I'm not sure if moving that discussion to the talk page would have prevented it from happening in this case, as the issue goes beyond DYK. I'm unclear how much of that could have been avoided by improving the process, but I suspect that in this case, it would have happened anyway, as that editor's idiosyncratic views have arisen in other areas. (Always meant to get back here, Daniel Case, to let you know that your removal of the DYK wasn't the concern; other than that, unless this can be an example for how to improve DYK, I'm unsure it's even a DYK issue.) Just in case you didn't see it there, and also because we're now far beyond your 24 hours....[edit]

So comical. I suppose I could attain to godhood, er, administratorship if I didn't have one job for my family and one to pay the dole for people who don't have one at all. I attempted to go through proper channels, but all the utopian rules of wiki make it impossible for someone who doesn't simply wiki while others buy their food for them. Clearly, I did provide more than one source, and just as clearly the biases of the wiki gods overruled them without so much as interaction, initially.

I wasn't quite aware just how inbred wiki is, until this afternoon when I was speaking to someone who is not in academia. He's just a blue-colar, albeit educated, man. When I laughingly told him what had transpired, I hardly got the first part out when he blurted, "Why on earth were you on wikipedia?" So obvious is your left tilt to even him, it was simply taken as a given.

Again, this has served as a greater lesson for me. I'll be sure to make of wiki an every-semester example for my students (as I did today in class, and will to the hundreds of others I speak to every week), and require that no sourcing is from wiki. It just isn't in the interest of objective education. Take a cursory look at "Realist2"'s user page, and at the description of, say, Daily Kos. It speaks candidly and clearly about this matter as well as wiki itself.

I was a little shy of WP:200, but yeah, WP:100 was still pretty good! As for that picture of NY 28, if you find the time to upload it, it would be great to have. It can wait, so no need to rush for it.
I was looking through your contributions, and I see that you've been busy moving articles per a WikiProject consensus. Need some help with it? If so, let me know on my talk page, and I'll be happy to help out. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 15:29, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe AWB moves pages. At least moving pages isn't a difficult task. reference abbreviations[edit]

"not so swift" is a bit of an extreme: abbreviations are simply not used outside scholarly writing. Because Wikipedia tries to avoid needless jargon as much as possible (and there is little as needless as Latinate reference abbreviations), it is just sensible editing. Not to mention that id./ibid./supra have a much better reason to be recommended against: they break far, far too easily should new references be added (what happens if a fact from a different souce is added between two "supra" refs?), or even should the references be moved about. Circeus (talk) 20:10, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Asgardian's continued page blanking, et al.[edit]

Hi, Daniel. I'm sorry to trouble you with this, but the issues concerning User talk:Asgardian's content blanking and behavior continue. Although most of his edits are solid, he still deletes valid material without citing a valid rationale, often using Edit Summaries that are at times euphemistic, and according to J Greb, possibly deceptive. In another instance, he removed material that was clearly badly written, and not formatted to WP standards, but referred to this as "vandalism". I tried to explain to him that bad writing is not vandalism, that referring to it as such could be seen as a violation of WP:Newbie and WP:AGF, and that there are descriptions of what is not vandalism. If he heeded this, he did not indicate it by responding to me.

Of late, the problem is particularly focused on the Black Bolt and Ultron articles. Asgardian implies that his edits are derived from some guideline/policy/prior discussion, but when I attempt to discuss it with him, as User:Emperor requested of me, he usually ignores me. When I issue warnings to him to cease content blanking without engaging in a discussion, he again dismisses this as "silly threats". I explained, for example, why given material on the aforementioned pages does not constitute "speculation" or fail WP:CRYSTAL, and in response, he simply repeats that assertion that it does, without acknowledging the specifics of my counterargument. I made this counterargument three times, once on his Talk Page, and twice on the Black Bolt Talk Page, and he simply reiterates his position, instead of presenting the reasoning/evidence that supports it and refutes my position. I asked him repeatedly for clarification, and he ignores me, but continues editing and reverting the passage while the discussion is ongoing, and makes personal comments about me, claiming that I am "emotional".

He has also been warned by three other administrators: Emperor, Jc37, and J Greb. While there is a discussion being attempted on the BB page, his continued refusal to cease this behavior or participate in anything other than a cursory manner does not seem to trouble others. Jc37 in particular, who claims to be a neutral observer who is mentoring him, has been speaking with me on my Talk Page, and has engaged in comments that do not seem constructive. He/she tells me to try talking to Asgardian and ask him for clarification. I repeatedly point out that I have already been doing so, and that Asgardian ignores me. JC says the Edit History of the BB page indicates that Asgardian has been participating, thereby indicating that JC did not actually read the thread himself/herself. JC claims that Asgardian does not have to talk to me, that removing such content is not disruptive, and therefore, not a blockable offense, even though this is exactly what Asgardian was blocked for the last time, and it is what he's been warned about of late. JC said that Asgardian was blocked for continuing to edit during an ongoing discussion, but I do not see a record of this anywhere, as he is still editing. JC also made comments in the final passage of his/her last post to me that appeared to be decidedly condescending, and quite insulting. This, combined with the somewhat contradictory nature of statements he/she made about whether Asgardian is being disruptive, cause me to wonder about JC's stated objectivity. Asgardian seems to act as if he can do whatever we wants, ignore whatever policies he wants, and ignore whatever administrators he wants by just dismissing them as "emotional" and making "silly threats".

Daniel, I do not discount the possibility that purely in terms of content, he might be right. He correctly pointed out on the Tiger Shark article that comic series volume numbers are only included in reference to them beginning with volume 2 and up, and I conceded that he was right, because he was. Conversely, I corrected him that one particular series had a second volume, and he conceded that point to me. That's how it should go. But this exchange was the exception, and the ultimate version that should be used in a passage or article is only part of the issue. The more troubling part is that he refuses to following policy in terms of oversight, open discussion/consensus, and civility. I did as Emperor requested, but it's not working, and all JC can do is suggest to me what I've already been doing.

I considered going to the Administrative Noticeboard/Incidents, but I don't know if that's just for problems with admins, or users as well. We can ask for mediation, but before I take such action, I figured I'd tell you about it, since some had problems with my last block of Asgardian, because while the block itself was valid, they felt that I was involved. I tried taking this issue to Emperor and JC for this reason, but it's not helping, so I thought I'd bring it to your attention. Can you look over the relevant Talk Pages? The matter occurs on User talk: Asgardian's (in multiple sections), Emperor's, Ultron, Black Bolt, and mine. I know it's a lot to slog through, but it illustrates the behavior that we're dealing with here. The fact that I have had past conflicts and have blocked him does not mean that I am not neutral, as it is simply a reflection of his continuing behavior. Despite this, I can easily recuse myself from this, except that the other admins won't do anything, and Asgardian refuses to engage me in discussion. Do you feel that if this continues, a block of him by me would be wrong, even if I were transparent about its rationale? Your advice would be appreciated. Nightscream (talk) 00:51, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be happy to endorse your WP:3PO involvement, if you are interested.
I think I and my comments are being somewhat mischaracterised above, but I have little problem with believing that that is perhaps how Nightscream is perceiving them. Perhaps your thoughts will bring some additional light (and less heat) to the situation.
Note, there are several previous discussions, including an RfC, a mediation attempt, and Arbcomm. Also, User:Hiding has been involved with dealing with disputes that others have had with Asgardian longer than I have (and who is who I typically go to when looking for a 3PO concerning him).
Anyway, good luck with all the text (there's quite a bit : ) - jc37 22:09, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Daniel. Asgardian has been continuing his behavior, reverting and deleting large swaths of material without discussion or compromise, even when attempts are made to do so with him. He continues to refer to material he does not like as "fancruft", and writes other potentially (albeit indirectly) uncivil Edit Summaries, even though I pointed out how that word is both not accurate, given its criteria, and potentially uncivil. User:Emperor now agrees with me that he needs to be blocked again, and asked me to ask an uninvolved admin to do so. Since he was blocked for three days last time, I think a week is in order this time, but I'll leave that to your judgment. Please advise. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 00:29, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the note - no I haven't changed my opinion, I'm afraid. I did agree to mentor Asgardian by helping out in disputes and pointing out the relevant guidelines and precedents. However, this seemed to actually involve helping other editors who were in danger of being "steam-rollered" and with persistence we made some progress over Hank Pym. I have been giving Nightscream advice on how to proceed on a couple of articles where he was having disputes with Asgardian who wasn't responding to attempts to discuss the issues and I laid out some reasonably steps which were rapidly removed by Asgardian again. Nightscream (and I and other editors) have spent a lot of time on this and I don't feel we have made any progress but refusing to discuss an issue, then reverting an edit by people who have discussed it flies in the face of WP:CONSENSUS and a raft of things that are expected from Wikipedians to help oil the wheels (bringing into play other issues like WP:OWN. It is a blunt tool but perhaps a block will help drive home the importance of the issue.
Also if you have any other suggestions for how to progress after it has expired then I am open to them, although this situation has dragged on for years and we have been through all sorts of procedures. Things have got better and yet we still keep coming back to this. (Emperor (talk) 03:35, 17 October 2008 (UTC))[reply]
Just saw this.
For whatever it's worth,
While: I might have suggested that the block be for other reasons, (I'm not sure I see what you seem to see in the diffs - I was going to ask for clarification, but don't worry about it); and also at this stage, I'm wondering if we're nearing the line between preventative vs. punitive blocking; I do support this action.
In going throug his edit history, there are just too many recent questionable edits (such as the ones you noted), which, to me, really looks like he's attempting to game the system in regards to his restrictions.
That while in the light that he really does seem to have been "getting better".
(Though I'll freely admit that I, at times, may WP:AGF more than perhaps the evidence indicates.)
As an aside, I should probably note that in the past, blocks didn't seem to be much effective. We may need to be prepared for the possibility of the need for greater sanction. - jc37 05:04, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel, Asgardian is upset with his block, which he feels is unjustified, and with your not discussing the matter. Can you chime in on his Talk Page here? Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 14:59, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, please discuss it with him. The history of edit disputes involving Asgardian are far too complicated for him to get blocked without greater explanation and elaboration. Someone reading that you're not discussing things (whether that's a fair assertion or wholly unfair) could get the impression that you're being hypocritical considering that one of the accusations against Asgardian which apparently led to this block is that he's not discussing things enough. At least once in the past, a block against Asgardian got overturned because the admin wouldn't discuss it more. Doczilla STOMP! 06:49, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't going to ask for further clarification (note above), but they're probably right in that some clear explanation from you regarding the reasons for the block, with some explained, supportive diffs, would likely be helpful. - jc37 08:38, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I posted a fuller explanation, with linked diffs, on his talk page. Daniel Case (talk) 12:03, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried several times to sort out his talk page. I'm going to have to read it "by diff" when I have more time later, it seems.

Regarding this, did you click the link to purge the cache of the Main Page, after you updated? (You can find the link on DYK template.) --BorgQueen (talk) 17:19, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, refreshing your browser purges the cache of your browser, and clicking the link purges the cache of the wikipedia server. So if you didn't click the link after the update, the Main Page would still show the one before for a while, no matter how many times you refreshed your own browser - which is why clicking the link is included in the update instruction. --BorgQueen (talk) 02:25, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have unblocked this "bot" account. Please in the future, maybe discuss with the good-faith user who created the bot account before blocking it. The account was created at 2:01, and you blocked the account at 2:24. 23 minutes, did you expect a WP:RBA to run in that time, did you feel the edits that the bot made to its own user space were somehow disruptive, did you not think that maybe she was getting her bot account ready for the future, did you think maybe she was a first-time bot owner? In the future, please try to talk before block, especially if the account is obviously not disruptive. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 03:15, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly, the course tone in my post was more due to the fact that after helping this user, she got blocked, which you and I know isn't a big deal, but to a fairly new user, it sucks. I was also troubled by the fact that obviously this bot, as explained on its user page, below the Bot template, clearly stated it would not be performing any bot actions and would only edit user space. If you do know more about the WP:Bot policy then I, why not educate instead of punish? In any case, I do apologize for any offense taken in my post. It was not my intention.
Obviously I am not in BAG, nor do I claim to be. And honestly, would you rather someone made test edits for a bot on their main account? I do think my advice was very sound, and that one BAG member stating something really doesn't make me feel confident. In any case, even if she was blatantly breaking WP:BOT (which I still don't see), there was obvious intent to improve the encyclopedia. All I ask, is that in the future, if there seems to be an inkling of intent to do good (especially if the user in question was communicating with an admin about!) then maybe just commenting or educating the user would be better method than the sour taste of a block. Again, I apologize for my lack of good faith, and yes the "trigger-happy" comment was about the UAA history :) « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 03:43, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

UAA Concern[edit]

Hi, I've seen you around UAA and wondered if I could bring your attention to something I've noticed. It seems like there an awful lot of reports recently of usernames with the word "bambi" in them. Is this a blatant violation? Not really. But it seems like the number of those reports has increased dramatically. I might be completely paranoid, but if those names are associated with the Disney Vandal, could someone be creating accounts for future vandalism sprees? I hope I'm just jumping at shadows, but your input would be appreciated. Cheers! TNX-Man 13:06, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your deletion of this from loading coil. Not only is Oliver Heaviside widely regarded as a genius, the source (Brittain, p37) describes him as brilliant, the word you deleted. Its not "peacock phrases" to state something that everyone believes is true. SpinningSpark 22:33, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(crossposted) No, I did not copy it, I applied the epithet simply as something well known. It is actually quite by accident that the footnote happens to be pointing to a page which also uses it. The footnote was put in to support a rather more controversial claim regarding Pupin. Let's just agree to leave it out of the article. SpinningSpark 09:34, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

edit summaries[edit]

I'm not opposing the renamings going on, but i noticed Juliancotton was doing incorrect renamings. I informed him of his mistake and i commented also about his edit summaries, so to avoid confusion i feel i need to comment about the edit summaries to you too. It's just that in your edit summaries it is a bit chafing to assert that it is a wp:NRHP consensus. It comes across as argumentative to me, because there was/is not a unanimous consensus; i didn't see a proper final summary/conclusion coda in the discussion. I don't know, maybe some followup in the wt:NRHP discussion, or in the edit summaries describing it as "according to reported near-consensus at wt:NRHP" or something milder would be better. Not terribly important, but some nod to those who were not on board could be diplomatic. I wouldn't have said anything, but the edit summaries in Juliancotton's context were a bit egregious. doncram (talk) 16:23, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: I'm a PC[edit]

Hey. Some pretty unpleasant things to had to say about my motives there, Dan. As well, i think you missed the point that it wasn't just about the irony, but that the commercials all feature those users who are known Mac users, or maybe the point that Mac-icons were removed from scenes where the folk claiming "I'm a PC" were digitally scrubbed as well as the scrubbing of the press images. Criticism emerged for that, and it was notable.
And by the way, I use both platforms, but I wrote the article not because Apple is too stupid to get out the way of its own ego, or that MS is so large that they literally don't know how their product is being sold. I wrote it because after MS was caught, it tried to erase the very fact that it made a mistake. That in itself isn't notable (though slimy). That notable, citable folk caught them at it is. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 03:44, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

new NHL for First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston[edit]

Okay, great news. There is a sandbox article about First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston, pre-prepared at wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/NHLsandbox7.

It has the nomination document included and it has a historic pic already. It would be great to get your newer pics, and make a nice article certainly for prompt DYK nomination. I'd also like to do a wikinews article, would you be into helping with that too?

Let's talk about the name of the article and/or other issues in the corresponding Talk page. I won't move it into mainspace right this moment. If you want to move it there, and start the DYK clock ticking and so on, that is okay by me. I just would prefer that we develop this already-started-version, not start a brand new article. doncram (talk) 23:22, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I bet it is indeed hard to photograph. What a tall steeple! Apparent in the old HABS pic in the sandbox version. I wonder if you took pics from the same angles as in the HABS pic set. doncram (talk) 23:56, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. Post Office disambiguation[edit]

Hi -- Thanks for relinking 14 NYS post offices within the U.S. Post Office disambiguation page. It's unfinished, under construction, and I had not in fact lost the links that your edit summary implied.... they were all down in a section at the bottom holding all the previous page's bluelinks: U.S. Post Office#Old list, editing down to just the bluelink ones, yet to be merged. Your edit saves some steps for me though, so thanks.

By the way, i intend to further edit those 14 NYS post office links, to show their actual article names, per wp:MOSDAB guidelines. In general, I think NRHP list-articles should show NRHP names for sites, and I just created redirects for all of the NRIS names like "US Post Office-Beacon", but disambig pages are not NRHP pages. So I hope you don't mind my changing the ones you just edited, from "U.S. Post Office (Beacon, New York)|US Post Office-Beacon" to "U.S. Post Office (Beacon, New York)", etc. doncram (talk) 04:35, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

westrim block[edit]

I looked over your recent edits after Nuke4Tots informed me of your recent edit warring. Accordingly, I have imposed a 24-hour block on your account plus the 17 hours that remained on the block I lifted on it last month.

Since you have remained civil during this, I decided not to give you a templated notice. But the fact is that you can't use other Wikipedia articles as sources. Period. It doesn't matter how long they've survived ... remember that the infamous Seigenthaler edits were in that article for months. To not only insist on this but reinstate it several times when removed on the rationale that it's been vetted in those articles is rather egregious edit warring. I have to block you again. Daniel Case (talk) 01:53, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the courtesy of not putting up the official notice but the block still smarts. Did you read both discussions an the talk page, and the one on the talk page of the 3rd opinion editor? Because a few hours (with no intervening conversation) before he asked you to block me, I had just told the editor This flag once was red that if nukes4tots continued to refuse to AGF and stop accusing me of trying to violate consensus that I would go to wikiquette alerts with the problem.
Also, the edit war was on one topic, not two, as he claimed, and the edit war is mutual, so I feel singled out when I get blocked and Koalorka, who was using the edit summary to yell at me and accuse me of vandalism, is not. I try to follow the order of dispute resolution, but I'm learning here that it's perfectly fine to skip that and go right to requesting blocks, which will be granted without asking the blocked editor for an explanation first. That doesn't seem right at all.
"Deep breath, moving away from anger."
Yes, I do remember reading about Seigenthaler, but its entry on those lists had survived several edits and the removal of various other weapons. I had also found several forums with comments on its use and pictures of Mexican military with it, although, being forums, they could not be used as sources. I tried to navigate some weapons sites, but got nowhere or to yet more forums.
Regardless, I explicitly said that I was not using the Wikipedia articles themselves as a source, but the sources on those articles as the source. There were several external links and sources (although a couple have been removed since this began several weeks ago) that appeared to have the info, but I couldn't navigate them to find the specific mentions of the P90 due to the language barrier. I invited Koalorka repeatedly to check with the editors of those two articles for their perspective but was ignored, as were my other questions.
Looking back, I can see how my edit summaries and talk page comments could be interpreted to read as though I was using the articles themselves as references, but I assure that was not my intent, and until these two discussions are resolved to the satisfaction of an outside editor, I pledge not to edit the article itself, only the talk page and other, unrelated, articles. But to continue the discussions, (again, only on the talk page) I need to be unblocked. Or here: if I edit the article AT ALL for the next week or so, feel free to ban me and my other account (Westrim2) for as long as you deem proper. But please, take off the block. Westrim (talk) 17:46, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just realized that at the same time Nukes was posting his message to you he also left a message in the section above, which was my copy of my conversation with the 3rd opinion editor. That makes it clear to me that he had seen that I intended to report his behavior and decided to head me off. I hereby request a block of Nukes4Tots for his malicious behavior. Westrim (talk) 01:53, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if you got my response to your email but if you didn't, I'd rather say it here. We can discuss this at AN/I after the block expires if you want. Since policy is clear on not using our own articles as sources (it hasn't occurred to you that you might be able to put the footnotes from those articles next to the entries, and if you feel you need to be assured about them we have plenty of Spanish-reading editors who would gladly verify them for you), and you continued to reinsert the edits with the same reasoning, I feel they were on solid ground reverting edits clearly against policy and thus they weren't edit-warring. Daniel Case (talk) 18:09, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the delay, connectivity trouble (The sooner I get a new router, the better). No, I didn't get your email, not sure why. I was hoping to get the block overturned rather than merely expired, as that looks and sound better, but oh well.
I've clearly stated both here and on the P90 talk page that I wasn't using wiki articles as references, so I don't know what I can do to convince you of that when you don't respond to what I said. Koalorka was the one who had a problem with the entries, so I was trying to encourage him to check with the editors, rather than simply dismissing the entries and me. As I've said, my reasoning was misinterpreted as being solely based on the articles which is mostly my fault for not being clear.
I do feel that Koalorka was edit warring, as exemplified by the edit summary here 11: regardless of right or wrong I don't see how an edit summary like that could not be considered edit warring (as Nukes4tots only reverted it once, I don't view him as a participant in this disagreement). Both editors have been extremely unwilling to court different viewpoints, as shown by their responses both in the two current disagreements, and two several weeks ago that are undoubtedly affecting attitudes now, linked to here 12 and here 13. I do hope that you will consider these links in your next response. Westrim (talk) 14:41, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Elements of Style cover.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Elements of Style cover.jpg.

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:16, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just out of curiosity, how specific does a topic ban have to be? Would it be possible to offer him a reduced block in exchange from a topic ban from the CD-i games, or animation topics, since that seems to bring out the worst in him? Or do they have to be more specific than that. I agree with you that he's headed for a community ban, and thought that maybe making him contribute to other areas for a change might help.
